Wallace Elementary

Generation Next

Wallace Elementary transformed an outdoor area into a schoolwide project known as “Generation Next.” In partnership with the House of Raeford FLOCK, this “Bright Spot’’ has embraced Duplin County’s STEAMA initiative. Through our partnership, Wallace Elementary students will be given opportunities to discover career pathways in agriculture and promote social and emotional well being for students and sta . A few of the main activities include: utilizing an outdoor learning commons for continuous integration of STEAMA education, career development, growing crops in raised garden beds, and raising chickens.

“Through the hard work and support from the House of Raeford FLOCK, Wallace Elementary STEAMA committee, and the Duplin County Agribusiness Academy Coordinator Mrs. Ti any Cassell, this courtyard has become something spectacular. It has enough space to contain a garden for raising crops by grade level (which are growing beautifully at this very moment). There are two outdoor classrooms for teaching on beautiful days. Finally, my personal favorite, this area can be a relaxing area for sta to either conduct their PLC’s or just relax in the sun on one of the swinging benches. This is truly a space where greatness “GROWS.” -Michael Sherrill

The teachers make my school special. I feel safe and comfortable talking, learning, and having fun with them. Sports and the coaches also make my school special because I love basketball and football and the coaches push you to do your very best. Reading and Math are my favorite subjects. The teachers are always helpful in making sure I understand. Math is more challenging for me, but Mrs. McCelland encourages me to meet the challenges presented to me. I would like to go to UNC to play football or basketball and pursue a degree in engineering. Kobe Bryant is my role model because he was proud of being di erent and always worked hard to accomplish his dreams.

My school is special for a lot of reasons. I think the courtyard is special because it’s a place we can all go and have fun. I also enjoy Battle of the Books.

Math and Science are my favorite subjects because those are the subjects that I need for my future job. I want to go to NC State to become a vet and I want to go to UNCW to get my Business degree.

My role model is God because He created me and this earth and He is amazing.

I have always loved working with children and grew up watching my mom teach and inspire students. I knew that one day, I too would help students to learn and grow. I love teaching at Wallace Elementary! I love the teachers I work with and the students I teach. The atmosphere at my school is inviting and encouraging. I don’t ever feel like I’m going to “work”. For me, going to school each day is a pleasure.

My philosophy of education is that all students can and will succeed. I believe that students all learn in di erent ways, but as the teacher, it is my job to nd those ways to help my students become successful. I graduated from UNCW with degrees in Elementary Education and Special Education. I also have my Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an Emphasis in Reading. I have been teaching for 17 years.

One of my favorite parts of the school year is being able to coach the Battle of the Books team. I love goal setting and reading with my team. Watching them get excited about their books and learning is so inspiring.

I also like to enhance my students’ learning by bringing them to our MakerSpace station and collaborating with our Media Specialist to provide enriching and engaging lessons.

In addition to watching my students grow, I also have the opportunity to help our beginning teachers grow. I am a Co-Site Coordinator for Beginning Teachers at our school. This role has been very rewarding, as I have had the opportunity to help many new teachers as they begin their careers.
