WALLACE ELEMENTARY Generation Next

8th grade

Wallace Elementary transformed an outdoor area into a schoolwide project known as “Generation Next.” In partnership with the House of Raeford FLOCK, this “Bright Spot’’ has embraced Duplin County’s STEAMA initiative. Through our partnership, Wallace Elementary students will be given opportunities to discover career pathways in agriculture and promote social and emotional well being for students and staff. A few of the main activities include: utilizing an outdoor learning commons for continuous integration of STEAMA education, career development, growing crops in raised garden beds, and raising chickens. “Through the hard work and support from the House of Raeford FLOCK, Wallace Elementary STEAMA committee, and the Duplin County Agribusiness Academy Coordinator Mrs. Tiffany Cassell, this courtyard has become something spectacular. It has enough space to contain a garden for raising crops by grade level (which are growing beautifully at this very moment). There are two outdoor classrooms for teaching on beautiful days. Finally, my personal favorite, this area can be a relaxing area for staff to either conduct their PLC’s or just relax in the sun on one of the swinging benches. This is truly a space where greatness “GROWS.” -Michael Sherrill STEAMA Committee Facilitator Wallace Elementary

The teachers make my school special. I feel safe and comfortable talking, learning, and having fun with them. Sports and the coaches also make my school special because I love basketball and football and the coaches push you to do your very best. Reading and Math are my favorite subjects. The teachers are always helpful in making sure I understand. Math is more challenging for me, but Mrs. McCelland encourages me to meet the challenges presented to me. I would like to go to UNC to play football or basketball and pursue a degree in engineering. Kobe Bryant is my role model because he was proud of being different and always worked hard to accomplish his dreams.

My school is special for a lot of reasons. I think the courtyard is special because it’s a place we can all go and have fun. I also enjoy Battle of the Books. Math and Science are my favorite subjects because those are the subjects that I need for my future job. I want to go to NC State to become a vet and I want to go to UNCW to get my Business degree. My role model is God because He created me and this earth and He is amazing.
