B.F. GRADY ELEMENTARY 8th grade
Career and Technical Education The Career and Technical Education Department gives students various opportunities to experience real-world and hands-on learning. This was certainly the case for a group of 8th grade students who took on a school-wide project under the leadership of Mr. Daniel Maldonado. The project consisted of two classes who were challenged to create different designs for a new school hoodie. A winning design was to be selected for students and staff to purchase. Ultimately, both designs were used to give buyers an option. The purpose of the project was to give students the opportunity to work as a team. Students had to learn how to work together despite the challenges they may have faced working in a group setting. Mr. Maldonado wanted the students to experience creating, marketing and selling a product from start to finish. It also allowed the students to raise money so they could take a field trip. “We feel like it was a very good experience for all the 8th graders who were in CTE because we got to do a handson full group project. We have never been able to do a large hands-on project. We had full control and the teacher was just there to monitor.” - 8th grade studentsAlondra Montes & Angelee Morales.

Spending time with friends and learning new things are what I like about school. My two favorite subjects are Science and Social Studies. I enjoy learning everything about the subject of Science and I like learning about the past and how we can learn from the mistakes that happened then. My homeroom teacher, Mr. Houston, makes our school special. His class is fun and he is very helpful. In the future, I would like to become a Fashion Stylist. I really enjoy learning about new styles and putting outfits together. I hope to attend James Sprunt Community College. My mom is my role model! She has experienced some hard things in her life, but she has kept on going and never gave up.

I like reading and learning about Science. I also like learning about Social Studies. Richard, my friend who moved, made my school special. My teachers and friends also make my school special. I have not thought about which college to go to yet; however, I would like to become a Paleontologist. A paleontologist would be a good future profession for me because I like learning about the past and about dinosaurs. I like to help people pick out books from the library and I think a librarian would also be a good future profession for me. I like to learn new stuff every day and I love going to school because it is fun. Being rewarded for reading my AR books is something I really like. My role model is my dad because he works very hard. He works to get the things we need and he is very brave.

My favorite thing about school is my teacher, Mrs. Quinn. She likes to do fun activities. I like that we get to learn new things that we haven’t learned before in each grade. My favorite subject is Math because my brother helps teach me at home. Actually, my brother, Alexander Ortiz, is my role model because he is a good person and good at soccer. When I grow up, I want to be a soccer player at UNC-Chapel Hill. I want to be a firefighter too.

My personal motto for education is to support teachers so that they can reach their full potential as educators and their students can be successful.
All the nice people make my school special because they make me happy. What I like most about school is that I get to learn and get to play hide-and-go seek tag with my friends. My favorite subject is Reading, because I get to learn about books and I love the pictures. I enjoy reading the titles of books so I can know what books to read. When I grow up, I want to be a teacher because I get to teach kids and help them learn. My teacher Mrs. King is my role model. I like it when she gives us ice cream and during centers she calls us to her table so we can learn. I love it when she does that!

I have been in education for 32 years. I started as a high school Science teacher and have been in my current role for 8 years. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from UNC-Pembroke and a Master’s Degree in Library Science from East Carolina University. In high school, my biology teacher was my favorite teacher and my favorite subject. She did such a great job in her role and inspired me to be a teacher. Duplin County Schools overall and especially BFG are special to me because we still hold onto strong morals and values that you don’t necessarily see everywhere else. We are very family oriented and take great care of our students and staff. Bright Spots in my role as Digital Learning and Media Coordinator are the Battle of the Books program and our Makerspace. I am passionate about our Battle of the Books program at BFG. I want students to have access to quality literature that inspires them to be lifelong readers. The Makerspace gives me the opportunity to work with teachers side-by-side in a collaborative way. It gives students a voice regarding their projects and gives them ownership of what they are working on.

BEULAVILLE ELEMENTARY The teachers, administrative staff, and students make our school special. I like my school because there is consistent knowledge on a day to day basis. My favorite subject is Science because I can learn how plants and trees grow. This also helps in my future plans which are to go to the University of Mt. Olive to pursue a degree in Agricultural Business. The hardworking farmers that grow our food to feed the world are my role models.

We put the flag up, take it down, and fold it every single day. Students on the team have learned responsibility, respect, and the importance of good listening and keeping their grades up. One team member shares, “Each morning when I say the Pledge of Allegiance, I not only remember ALL who have sacrificed their lives for my freedom, I also pray for those who are in harm’s way to retain the freedoms of our great nation.”

Lots of things and people make my school special. All of the teachers are very helpful and nice and teach us great stuff. My school gives us great information about African-Americans. My school gives shout-outs to students and makes us feel special. I also love our lunch staff and cleaning staff. My favorite subjects are Science and Reading. Science teaches you many different things about the world. When I grow up, I would love to go to a New York City college and become a model. Serena Williams is my role model because she worked hard and she didn’t let anyone get in her way.

My favorite thing about school is centers. Legos is my favorite. I also like doing homework because I am learning. Reading is my favorite subject because we read fun stories. I like bear books, especially Brown Bear, Brown Bear. I also like to play outside on the slide with my friends. I want to be a police officer when I grow up. My mom is my role model because she takes care of me and spends time with me.
Jocelyn Yanez-Arizmendi My mom is my role model because she takes care of me and spends time with me.
Candice Jarman This is my tenth year teaching. I have a Masters of Elementary Education, with a concentration in Teacher Leadership. I am certified to teach Special Education K-12, Regular Education K-6, and Gifted Education K-12. I feel this gives me an advantage of reaching all students no matter their strengths or weaknesses. I did not always want to be in education. However, once volunteering in public schools, I decided education was the profession for me. After having children of my own, I now know that this was God’s purpose all along. I want to be an advocate for my students and help those who may not have the confidence to help themselves. Duplin County Schools is special to me, not only because it’s where I am from, but also because it is a family. The students and staff know that we have one another’s back and have the best interest of the students at heart. This year, I have been able to lead the middle school Fellowship of Christian Athletes club. Even though this was a push outside of my comfort zone, I have thoroughly enjoyed watching students grow in their faith. I am adamant that this is their club and I am just here to facilitate and help them get where they want to be. It has been awesome to be involved with middle school students leading and sharing their own experiences with their faith. My philosophy of teaching is simple. Relationships Matter. A child will not learn or put forth effort if they do not think the teacher cares. It is my passion to make sure students know at the end of the day, I will be there for them academically and emotionally. After 10 years in the profession, I can truly say I love my career. Not every day is easy, but knowing I am advocating and making a difference in our future makes it all worth it.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a student-led club that meets weekly for prayer, devotions and games. Our club cleans the highway in front of our school four times a year and hosts Prayer at the Flag and Bring Your Bible to School Day. Our FCA gives students a safe place to pray and study. Cleaning the highway is a fun activity that promotes leadership and assisting in your community. “I love seeing all my friends pray. I like learning about Jesus and doing trivia.” – Kyleigh Turner- 5th grade
I think that what makes my school special are the students, teachers, and staff. They all contribute to making the school feel like a community. What I like about school is that it allows me to have fun while learning academic and life skills. Reading and Science are my favorite subjects. Reading has exposed me to many types of writing and has aided my own writing. Science is simply fascinating, and 8th grade Science is particularly enjoyable. Currently, I do not have set plans for the future, but that is the beauty of it, because I can continue learning and eventually make those decisions. I would probably say my mom is my role model. I think the way she built her life, starting with little, shaped my views on what a strong, hard working person is.

Britani Becher I have been teaching for 15 years. All of my years have been spent here in Duplin County! I have taught grades, 1, 4, 5, and served as a literacy coach. I am currently teaching 5th grade and have taught this grade for 7 years. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in 2007 and my Master’s Degree in 2012, both from East Carolina University. I am currently pursuing my National Board Certification. I chose education as a profession my senior year of high school. I was involved in a Peer Tutoring program at Chinquapin Elementary school. I formed very close relationships with the students I tutored and knew in my heart that my purpose was to work with children. On my last day of my assignment, one of my students was in tears as I left. I took a photo with this student and it still stands in my classroom. I look at this photo daily and remember why I began! My school is very special because of the sense of family we have. Not only does the staff work together better than anywhere I have seen, the community jumps in to assist anytime they are called upon. Chinquapin staff and families support one another, but most importantly, they love one another. Leading our Beta club this year has been both a challenge and a blessing. Our school is filled with hardworking, kind, and smart students. Because of this, we have a large Beta club, with over 80 members this year. Over 50 of these students came to school at 7am during the week and several hours each weekend leading up to our state convention in February. At this convention our students earned 15-top 5 awards, including 1st place in Songfest, Academics, and Visual Arts. I also feel that my garden is a Bright Spot. Each year I write grants geared towards agriculture. My students love planting vegetables, watering, and harvesting the crops we grow throughout the year. With these grants we have also raised butterflies, created a worm garden, created weather stations and practiced aquaponics. I love integrating agriculture into our everyday studies and showing my students how they can harvest and grow their own food. These opportunities have allowed my students to experience many of the components of STEAMA each day!

This month-long celebration afforded students and staff the opportunity to learn about the contributions and achievements of African-Americans. “It was a great opportunity for us to showcase our talents,” says student participant Ty’Marcus Newton.
I am currently in the Gateway Program. I don’t have just one thing that makes school special for me. School is more like my second home. The way everyone is there for each other is lovely. I am a big family person. I like having teachers that will be there for you when you need them. Everybody has each other’s backs if they feel like it’s the right thing to do. I honestly don’t have a favorite subject. The Center of Opportunity is the first school that I like. My role model is my best friend and partner in life. I look up to him because he shows me that there is nothing I can’t do in life. He always pushes me to do my best, and he helps me the most.

Dr. Kea is special. I admire the way he remains calm and has patience with all of the students under his care. I want to be a future game developer, which requires a background in coding. Math helps build my knowledge in that career. My inspiration for being a game developer is CoryxKenshin because he’s an African American YouTuber, who has made a living through gaming. DUPLIN EARLY COLLEGE HIGH Interest Expo
11th grade
The Interest Expo is a year-long project designed to provide an opportunity for students to practice real world skills and pursue and learn more about a topic they are interested in. Students developed a proposal and budget during the Fall semester. In the Spring, students “built” their vision. The project culminated in student presentations summarizing the process and showcasing what they learned and what they created. This project allowed students to explore a career or hobby they may not have otherwise had the support, time, or money to research. Supplies were secured by the school to ensure all students had the materials needed to fully participate. Every staff member at DECHS worked and conferenced with students to help them develop and refine their project ideas. “I think the Interest Expo was a great creative outlet for our students. Unfortunately, we don’t have any art or major CTE courses, so this was a way for students to create or design something of their own choosing, while also connecting it to STEAMA.” -Taylor Morrison, DECHS staff member.

DECHS is diverse, inclusive, and supportive of all students. The communication between the staff and students is consistent, and students can easily reach out to any member of staff for support and advice. DECHS provides a stable environment that enables students to concentrate on their projects, assignments, and lectures. It is less chaotic at DECHS, due to the smaller class sizes which allows the formation of many genuine relationships. Math and Science are my favorite subjects because I’m interested and I do well in both subjects. I plan on completing college and medical school in order to become a doctor. I hope to attend UNC-Chapel Hill, NC State, or ECU. My role models are my fellow peers and family members because all of them are honorable, trustworthy, and strong. To conclude, DECHS is a school “ WHERE EXCELLENCE IS THE NORM.’’
This school is special in many ways. One would be the opportunities that it could give you in the future. Also, the overall school is full of different cultures and we all accept each other. I like how this school is very invested in learning each and every one’s name and getting to know everyone personally. I think currently my favorite subject is Biology. Mrs. Kane has made the class fun and a learning experience. My future plans consist of becoming a traveling Registered Nurse being able to help others everywhere. I do not know what college I want to attend yet. My role model is my family. My mother has always said you will learn from others. It’s your mistake if you fall right behind them. So my family has set a standard and it’s my opportunity to surpass it.

What makes my school special is the diversity of people and learning about and accepting each other. At our school it is not only teachers but our own peers who become our biggest motivators and push us to be better and to see each other succeed. My favorite subject is anything that consists of science. I love lab experiences due to what you can discover from the activities. My plans for the future are to graduate from DECHS with an Associate’s Degree in Science, leading to attending UNCW for my Bachelor’s degree in Biology and then continuing my studies at either UNC Chapel Hill or NYU for Orthodontics. My role models are two people instead of just one and those are my parents. My parents are the ones who have taught me to value my education. My parents have made me understand what life is about and how to find that little ray of happiness in difficult situations. What I am today and what I will become in the future involves the support and affection of my parents.
Students of all beliefs, races, sexes, genders, and dreams come together and that is what makes DECHS special to me. It is a place where I can strive and have a purpose; somewhere I can achieve and excel in the most amazing ways. My favorite subjects are History and English, no doubt. I love them so much because of the study of cultures. We get to see old literature and civilizations rise and fall. I want to attend an Ivy League University where I will get my Master’s degree in Creative Writing and Journalism. Then I will probably try to get a job at the New York Times or a large newspaper company where I’d get enough attention to publish a book. My role model is the version I see of myself when I live up to my potential. I yearn to be that person and that is what motivates me daily. Life never goes to plan, but I am so excited to experience my future. Every turn, every day is spontaneous, but I can live my dreams, and it starts here.

EAST DUPLIN HIGH Journalism
12th grade
East Duplin’s Honors Journalism and yearbook program involves 16 dedicated yearbook staff members from grades 1012 and 2 advisers, Katy Hunter and Dena Jenkins, who devote themselves to the chaos and creativity required to organize our yearbook, the Panther’s Paw. Students must apply to be accepted to the program, and once selected, they collaborate to create the yearbook, study the basics of journalism, copywriting, photography, explore the fundamentals of running a business, and they even dabble in video production as they work to promote the book and highlight different events throughout the year. The goal of our yearbook staff is to include every student as many times as possible within our 200 page publication. We spend a great deal of time discussing how the yearbook becomes a history book and a treasure for students twenty, thirty, forty years down the road. Through student-led interviews, student surveys, and the commitment of photographers to photograph as many sporting, club, and school events as possible, ED’s journalism program manages to bring life, enthusiasm, and school spirit to our student body while documenting our school year. Co-Editors Riley Tate and Gaby Herrera, Photography Editor Milleny Ramirez, and Business Editor Emma Whaley came together and determined that after a crazy, COVID- filled junior year that they wanted this year’s book to focus on capturing the whole school experience and celebrate us all being back together on campus. This year’s theme is CapturED, and they have successfully captured every moment, every student, and every event of their senior year in this year’s book!

2021-2022
East Duplin is special because of the willingness of everyone, the teachers, the students, administrators, and our school janitors. Everyone is willing to help the next person in line and guide each other to the next step. What I personally like most about school is being able to participate in extracurricular activities and building new relationships with other students who are also involved in extracurriculars, while also learning from them. My favorite subject is English because I love to read and analyze stories. In the future, I would like to go to UNC Chapel Hill and get my Bachelor’s in Nursing to become a Travel RN, and while working I would like to be furthering my education to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. My role model is Ruth from the Bible. Ruth was hardworking, fearless, and virtuous, but she never thought twice about helping others. I aspire to hold the same values and treat others the same way.

Our school is unique because of the exceptional students, parents, and faculty who work tirelessly to make it happen every day. The staff’s enthusiasm, love, and dedication to teaching and assisting students is exceptional. I like being able to get a good education from teachers who make learning enjoyable, and I also like going to Mr. Hatcher’s and Mrs. Hunter’s classes. Civics and World History are two of my favorite classes because they educate me on how to be a better citizen in today’s society and avoid repeating the mistakes of earlier generations. My ambition is to obtain a Master’s in Business Administration from NC A&T University. My goal is to learn how to flip residential and commercial property. My parents are my role models because they invest time into teaching me right from wrong. They also provide for my basic needs and keep God in everything that they do.
In my perspective, the people and many after-school activities such as clubs and sports make our school unique. East Duplin is a school where we are very interested in sports and activities, and there are so many wonderful individuals to meet while participating in a particular activity or group. What I like most about East Duplin is that it is a highly open school with a lot of concern for the students and teachers. Math and Science are my favorite courses since they are so sophisticated and challenge you to be better and work harder. After East Duplin, I intend to attend college, specifically Appalachian State University, to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Forensic Science and a track scholarship. My mother and brother serve as role models for me. They’ve both played significant roles in my life, molding me into the person I am today, and I can’t thank them enough for their unwavering support and love.
Teaching was always my dream job. Initially my goal was to teach elementary school, until I had a teacher in high school who really sparked a passion for history.

have been in education for a total of 19 years -- 16 years as a Social Studies teacher and 3 years as an Assistant Principal. I received my BA in History with teacher licensure in 2002 and my MEd in Secondary Education in 2005, both from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. I also have my National Board Teacher Certification. Teaching was always my dream job. Initially my goal was to teach elementary school, until I had a teacher in high school who really sparked a passion for history. The family atmosphere of East Duplin and Duplin County Schools is special to me. This is home and the support our community provides to one another is unmatched! Having the opportunity to support our students and staff through the transitions of the last two school years, with remote learning and the return to face to face has been one of the most rewarding opportunities outside of my classroom experience. I strongly believe that relationships are the most powerful curriculum tool available and one that I strive to exemplify each and every day!

JAMES KENAN HIGH Career and College Fair
12th grade
A team of individuals, composed of an Assistant Principal, a Career Development Coordinator, a College Advisor, a Media Coordinator, Counselors, a Guidance Assistant and a STEAMA Coordinator, worked together to provide our students with a STEAMA Career and College fair on February 18, 2022. Over 50 participants that included all branches of the military, community colleges, universities, local businesses, organizations and individual entrepreneurs were a part of the event, aimed at raising our students’ awareness of post-secondary opportunities. We are so proud of our students and the level at which they were engaged with the participants. Without prompting, nearly every guest was complimentary of our students as well as the organization of the event. They seemed to be extremely impressed with the questions the students were asking. In an effort to prepare our students for the event, they all participated in an advisory lesson that was focused on how to get the most out of the fair. “I had great conversations with many JK students that were well prepared and they asked very thoughtful and intelligent questions.” Fayetteville Tech Admissions Rep. “It was a pleasure to visit James Kenan! You put on a fantastic event! I think every student was able to get something out of the fair.” - Lenoir CC Admissions Rep.

I love the outgoing spirit of my school. The school is always down for everything and anything. We have future influencers, doctors, space engineers, great athletes, and models! We have very open and supportive staff members. My favorite subject is Math. I enjoy working with numbers. My plans are to go to UNCW and major in premed with a minor in Asian studies. Then I would like to attend Stanford University School of Medicine and become an ER surgeon and volunteer for 5 years while traveling. My mother has taught me hard work, independence, and being kind. Jessica has always shown me that no matter what anyone says you’re the owner of your life! She’s a big influence on who I am. And Mrs. Lee, she is such an inspiration for me! She’s always on top of things with a great smile on her face! I wish to grow up and be like her, to inspire, help, and guide younger people how she has for me! She’s always stepping up and going the extra mile. The best thing about James Kenan has to be the supportive administration; they truly care about your success. The athletic teams also create a positive environment. I like how school exposes us to new information. Also, as class president, there are a multitude of opportunities to be successful, you just have to do the work. My favorite subject right now is English. I have rediscovered my enjoyment of reading. My English teacher, Olivia Hardison, makes the content interesting and challenges us in a unique way. I want to go to college, but I’m not sure what I want to major in; however, technology is an interest of mine. Schools I’ve thought about attending are Appalachian State and UNC. My role models include my late Grandfather Ronnie Bostic and my Uncles, Kyle and Daniel Bostic. They are successful and I’ll always look up to them.

One thing that makes James Kenan so special is our teachers. They are working super hard to make sure we all are getting everything we need and they are trying to make everything as comfortable as it can be with all of the covid changes. Something personally I love about school is playing sports. I’m so grateful for all the friends I have gained through sports. We all become like a big family. My favorite subject is probably English. I love to read and I’ve always done well in this subject. I just love all the things we learn in that class. My plan for the future is to go to ECU and become a kindergarten teacher. We need more teachers. My role model is my sister. She has shown me that you have to work for what you want and if you are not finding the success you want, work harder.

The students make James Kenan special. Each of my classes this school year has been a unique experience because of the different people that were there. I also like the school’s athletic program, especially because I enjoy cheering and attending the games. My favorite subject is Social Studies. Learning about the past can help people to understand what is happening in the present and how it affects the future. After I graduate high school, I want to attend an HBCU and pursue a career in either teaching or law. My role model is my mother. My mother is a full time mom, wife, and business owner. She has inspired me to stand up for what I believe and fight for what I want to achieve.

Twan A. Fields When I retired from the military, I knew I wanted to work with young adults. When I found out about the JROTC program, I figured I could work with young adults and show them what the military has done for me and my family, if they choose that route. I also believe there is a need for more people that are willing to teach our youth leadership, respect, loyalty and the benefits of working hard. The Army instilled those qualities in me and I want to instill those same qualities in our students. Although I spent 27 years in the military and many of those years were spent with young adults just entering the military, this is my first year teaching in a high school setting. The JK staff is so dedicated and hardworking. Everyone gets along well and enjoys working together. It’s more than a job to the people that work in our school. I love working with the staff here at James Kenan High School. Everyone has welcomed me with open arms from day one of school and everyone is so supportive. The students are great and I’ve enjoyed getting to know them and understand them. Being a teacher and being part of the military, you must learn to work with individuals from all walks of life. As a teacher, my hope is to instill in our students a respect for all people and the value of a good education.

KENANSVILLE ELEMENTARY Elementary Battle of the Books
Our school is special because other schools around the world have to wear uniforms. We can wear our own clothes! Besides that, what I like most about school are my teachers and friends. My favorite subject is Language Arts, but I also enjoy Math because it is challenging. I’m not sure what college I want to attend, but my career choice is to be a nail tech or a professional artist. I have a lot of role models but my favorite is Mrs. Linda Jarman because she is a strong and loving woman who inspires me and others.

Students are given a list of books and they compete against other students across the district on their knowledge of those books. This year, students had fifteen books to read. The competition took place on March 18, 2022. Congratulations to our young readers for winning Duplin County’s Elementary Battle of the Books. We are so proud of the hard work these students and coaches put forth. This team was dedicated to doing their best and it showed. A child who reads can do anything. Rachel Bostic Kenansville Elementary and Duplin County Schools both hold a special place in my heart. The reason is that they are the county and school that I attended when I was a child. These places aren’t just a workplace for me, they are a familiar atmosphere that makes it seem like a second home. I chose education as a profession because I wanted to make a difference in young lives that would one day shape our future. I received my degrees from James Sprunt Community College and the University of North Carolina Wilmington. I hold three Associate’s degrees in Arts, Science, and General Education. Lastly, I have a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education and a minor in Business. This is my first-year teaching. As a beginning teacher, I have had the privilege to be a part of and participate in an amazing BT program that has truly helped guide me throughout my first year. It’s a bright spot for me because not only am I working alongside mentors that were teachers when I was a KES student but also because I know without a doubt if I run into any issues or have any concerns, they are always right there to help and support me. My philosophy of teaching is that all students are capable of learning something new each day, no matter if it’s about a subject or a life lesson. Students have so much potential to learn and grow as long as we are there to support and encourage them, students can truly go far in life.

Becky Kerns My philosophy of teaching and education is that all students are unique and special. It is my job to help them become life-long learners who are well-rounded, critical thinkers. They should feel safe and loved. Students should be held to high expectations and encouraged to go above and beyond. I chose education as a profession because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of children. I received my Bachelor’s of Science degree in Music in 2000 from Mount Olive College. In that same year, I began teaching as a lateral entry music teacher. I completed my lateral entry courses for certification through East Carolina University. This school year is my 22nd year in the music classroom. My school is special because of the close knit community that loves and supports us. The students are probably what I love most about my job. Their excitement and enthusiasm are some of my favorite things. I must constantly be willing to learn, change, adapt, and grow. Much time is spent on reflection and how I could do something different or better to meet the needs of ALL of my students. I have been in charge of numerous musical programs at our school. Whether we are having a Christmas program or singing a few pieces for an EPIC meeting, my students never cease to amaze me. Their willingness to act, perform, sing, dance, play instruments, be creative, listen, and participate has been phenomenal. I am so very proud of each and every one of them and the growth that they have made in so many different ways. Educators should be the example for students. Actions speak louder than words.

NORTH DUPLIN JR. / SR. HIGH Light Up the Lawn

The Senior Beta Club sponsored Light Up the Lawn in November in recognition of Veterans Day. Club members sold 250 luminaries either in memory of fallen soldiers or in honor of retired or active service members. Luminaries acknowledged every branch of the military, several wars, and POWs. A ceremony was held for the lighting of the luminaries and all of the names were read aloud. All of the money raised was donated to the Veteran’s Home. Student Giselle Contreras-Gonzalez said the moving event was a great opportunity to honor veterans. Thank you to our students and community members who made this event such a success, but most of all thank you to those who fight for our freedoms.
The people at North Duplin are calm and there is not a lot of drama. I like the layout of the school with all the different buildings. My school is special to me because I live in this community and I graduated from North Duplin. These are kids I see walking around my neighborhood, working in local stores, and at my church. They are like my family and I love seeing them grow up and become leaders in our community. Our children’s overall health plays a role in them being successful in the classroom and my goal is to help them be the healthiest version of themself. We have a growing number of students in our schools that have chronic health conditions and I play a vital role in teaching them how to manage it so they can be successful in school and as an adult. I also feel it’s important that I help our staff focus on their health and learn how to make good choices. Our teachers work really hard and oftentimes don’t take the time to take care of themselves so we try to offer some wellness opportunities at school. In the past, I have done a “Biggest Loser Weight Loss Challenge” for our staff and everyone really enjoyed it. We have also partnered with a local pharmacy to provide flu shots and other vaccinations for our staff. We have had Vidant Duplin come out and do cholesterol and blood pressure screenings.

One of the club’s service projects this school year was collecting items for gift bags and delivering them to The Gardens of Rose Hill Rest Home for Christmas. The students also sang Christmas Carols and played fun trivia games with the residents who thoroughly enjoyed the visit! Another service project was a joint venture with the local chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and other community organizations to collect new and gently used picture books and dictionaries to give to students who are learning English as a second language. A group of members traveled to Greensboro in January to attend the North Carolina Junior Beta Convention and participated in various competitions with our club bringing home several Top 5 Awards in the State! As an example, Duplin County Schools has collaborated with East Carolina University to provide students and staff access to the Healthier Lives at School telehealth program. This program allows students to receive minor acute care medical visits, behavioral health counseling, and nutritional counseling while at school to prevent the loss of academic time. This program has proven to be extremely beneficial to our students over the last few years. I believe that there are so many opportunities in education to not only promote academic success but to promote the health and wellbeing of children as they grow.

WALLACE ELEMENTARY Generation Next

Wallace Elementary transformed an outdoor area into a schoolwide project known as “Generation Next.” In partnership with the House of Raeford FLOCK, this “Bright Spot’’ has embraced Duplin County’s STEAMA initiative. Through our partnership, Wallace Elementary students will be given opportunities to discover career pathways in agriculture and promote social and emotional well being for students and staff. A few of the main activities include: utilizing an outdoor learning commons for continuous integration of STEAMA education, career development, growing crops in raised garden beds, and raising chickens. “Through the hard work and support from the House of Raeford FLOCK, Wallace Elementary STEAMA committee, and the Duplin County Agribusiness Academy Coordinator Mrs. Tiffany Cassell, this courtyard has become something spectacular. It has enough space to contain a garden for raising crops by grade level (which are growing beautifully at this very moment). There are two outdoor classrooms for teaching on beautiful days. Finally, my personal favorite, this area can be a relaxing area for staff to either conduct their PLC’s or just relax in the sun on one of the swinging benches. This is truly a space where greatness “GROWS.” -Michael Sherrill STEAMA Committee Facilitator Wallace Elementary

I have been teaching for 17 years. One of my favorite parts of the school year is being able to coach the Battle of the Books team. I love goal setting and reading with my team. Watching them get excited about their books and learning is so inspiring. I also like to enhance my students’ learning by bringing them to our MakerSpace station and collaborating with our Media Specialist to provide enriching and engaging lessons. In addition to watching my students grow, I also have the opportunity to help our beginning teachers grow. I am a Co-Site Coordinator for Beginning Teachers at our school. This role has been very rewarding, as I have had the opportunity to help many new teachers as they begin their careers.

WALLACE-ROSE HILL HIGH Beta Club
12th grade
After a couple of years of not being able to meet, our Beta Club has flourished this year under the leadership of Club Sponsors Mrs. Brittany Knowles, Mrs. Betty Raynor, and Ms. Shannon Gehen. President Iris Gonzales has worked diligently to involve the club in several service projects and to rejuvenate the club after a two-year hiatus. The group sponsored a drive to collect blankets to distribute to local nursing homes. They also visited nursing homes at Thanksgiving. One of the highlights of the club’s year was winning first place in Quiz Bowl at the State Beta Club Convention. We also had an individual member place fourth in Black and White Photography. This qualifies us to compete in these categories at the National Beta Club Convention this summer. As a whole, our school is so proud of the accomplishments of this group. Although we often make the news for our athletic prowess, this was an opportunity to showcase the intellectual talents of our students. Principal Jenkins stated, “Here at Wallace-Rose Hill, we are excited about the academic achievements of our students and are beyond excited about the opportunity for our Beta Club to compete nationally in Nashville, Tennessee this summer. GO DOGS!”

One of the things that makes WRH special is football, especially when we beat East Duplin. Another is Coach Motsinger! Coach Mot is my role model. He has taught me a lot about life and being a man. He has given me a father figure and someone to strive to be. Mrs. Davis is pretty cool too! My favorite class is 4th period when I have my internship. After high school, I’m going into the Air Force.

The students and staff are what make Wallace-Rose Hill so special to me. The staff here truly cares. Our teachers in the AG department, Mr. Stampe and Ms. Outlaw are always there to help and support students. They have truly been a huge part of my academic development. Throughout my high school years, I have become increasingly involved in FFA. This summer, I will have the chance to attend the Washington Leadership Conference on a full scholarship from NC FFA. After high school, I hope to attend NC State University and earn a degree in Agribusiness. I plan to go on to law school after and practice Ag Law. Agriculture and environmental policy is something I have become very passionate about. I hope I can use my career to help people and truly make a difference. My role model is my mother. I have never seen her not step up to help those in need. She truly has the biggest heart. I hope I am the type of person she is and make the impact on others that she has.

I never thought that all the worries of becoming a highschooler would dissipate immediately after I started interacting with teachers and classmates. I realize I’m lucky to be a Wallace-Rose Hill Bulldog. With the help of all my teachers, I’ll set the foundation of my future, who I want to become, and how I’ll achieve it. I’m not sure which university I’ll attend, but it has to offer pre-med to eventually become a psychiatrist. I don’t want to get ahead of myself; so, right now, I am enjoying art, photography, collecting action figures, and playing with my little brother Max. Hopefully, I am becoming a role model for him the same way my parents have been for me. They’ve taught me how important education is, to be respectful, and love God above all else.
The teachers make my school special, because they genuinely care for your well-being. When you are struggling, they help you. Also at WRH, I get opportunities to express myself with the different clubs I am able to join. My favorite subject is Science because it is hands-on. My plans for the future are to go to UNC-Chapel Hill for undergrad and then attend a medical school to become a neonatologist. My role model is Katherine Johnson. She figured out a path for spacecraft to orbit earth and land on the moon. NASA used her math to send astronauts back as well.
Janiah Warren My role model is Katherine Johnson. She figured out a path for spacecraft to orbit earth and land on the moon.
Brittany Knowles Duplin County has always been special to me; it’s where I grew up and where my own teachers made such a difference in my life and inspired me to follow in their footsteps. What you will find in our county and our school are teachers who care about kids, staff who are willing to go the extra mile, and parents and community members who support our schools. I graduated from WRH in 2001, and it is with great pride that I am now able to teach here. As they say, once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog! I have received three degrees from UNCW - Middle Grades Education/ELA (6-9), Curriculum, Instruction, and Supervision, and School Administration. I have been in education for 16 years. My philosophy as a teacher is to meet students where they are and engage them so they can take ownership for their own learning. Not only do I want to instill a love of learning, but I want to be a part of what shapes them, makes them who they are, and pushes them to give back to others. I think educating our young people is the key to making a community and world a better place. One of the brightest spots this year happened just recently when our Beta Club hosted a basketball tournament to raise money to attend the National Convention in Tennessee this summer. The event brought all of our students together; cheering on classmates, laughing with friends, smiling and having the best time. It seemed like “old times” for the first time in a long time!

Communities in Schools is an organization that helps bridge the gap between the community and the school. The organization increases educational engagement with students, families, teachers, school staff, and community members. There motto is “All in for kids – In Schools and Beyond”. They are also involved in Teen Court and will host a fashion show this year to promote businesses that provide support for the organization. Baby Steps is another program Communities in Schools offers to help young, school-aged mothers. At Warsaw Elementary, CIS focuses on support in the areas of attendance, social and emotional learning, and basic needs resources for our students. I have learned that we are resilient at Warsaw Elementary School! Math is my favorite subject because I understand it better. I enjoy learning new things. Mrs. Moore, the Assistant Principal, is a positive role model for me because she leads by good example. She wants what is best for us at my school. My favorite sport is basketball because it inspires me not to give up! Before my grandmother passed away she would always tell me to “Never give up” so basketball is an area where I can have fun and push myself to be better every game and practice.
My friend, Kyah Germain, makes school special for me. We have been friends since the 1st grade and she makes me happy. She understands me. Perhaps the most foundational element to success in any curriculum area is Reading proficiency. To this end, Duplin County Schools has embraced The Science of Reading. This is an evidence-based reading instruction methodology that will help us learn the latest science behind how children learn to read, the kind of systematic and explicit instruction that works best for students, how to diagnose what is happening when children struggle to read, and how to immediately and intentionally intervene. Our ultimate goal is for all students to read on grade level by the end of third grade; a pivotal time when students begin to transition from learning to read to reading to learn and comprehend more complex content.

A website has been developed that provides literacy activities for each grade level, pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. Families and communities can access these activities at home, download, print, and work directly with their children. Whether you are one of the 500 middle school or 700 high school athletes, a proud parent or family member, a proud alumnus, an elementary student playing in the endzone on a Friday night, or part of a rowdy student cheering section, athletics has the power to bring us all together. While some are just along for the ride, the greatest beneficiaries of athletics are the student-athletes themselves. In addition to improving their athletic prowess, recording wins and losses, and creating lasting memories, student-athletes are learning life skills such as hard work, time management, sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, and accountability. Moreover, student athletes tend to have better attendance, behavior, and grades. Perhaps because these are all requirements to participate, but also because of the invaluable mentorship of approximately 130 coaches that lead teams in our district each year and consistently remind their players that they are students first and athletes second.

")*+,+ In July 2018, Duplin County Schools launched its STEAMA initiative as a framework of innovation to ensure the integration of learning across all content areas and to allow every student to graduate with a pathway leading to a successful career. As a means to develop stronger connections to the county’s large agricultural community and leverage the creativity of its residents, STEAMA added the arts and agriculture to
an already successful STEM focus. Addressing local, state, and national business and industry needs through powerful partnerships, the STEAMA model contributes to a growing economy and a better-prepared workforce by engaging all students in pathways with purpose, increasing their chances of being connected to school and thus, graduating on-time ready for prosperous careers and college experiences. Four years into this model,
we can honestly and proudly say that STEAMA is no longer just an initiative. It is who we are and our teachers and students are thriving due to its relevance, rigor, personalization, and engagement. Our graduation rate is at an all-time high at 86.1%, approximately 1900 dual-enrollment college courses were taken by our students last year and 3100 CTE credentials were earned. We look forward to continuing to plow full STEAMA ahead!

should not be taken for granted. Minimum safety standards for school buses far exceed those of other passenger vehicles making school transportation the safest way for students to get to school. In environmental terms, school buses (that carry the equivalent amount of passengers as about 36 cars) keep a large number of cars off the road each day, resulting in lower emissions and less air

pollution. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, school transportation increases attendance and puts more students in their desks on time and ready to learn. For some students, it is their only way to get to school, thereby literally becoming their gateway and access to learning. Duplin County Schools has a fleet of 117 buses that travel 7705 miles per day and transport 5792 students.

School nurses manage all physical health requirements and needs of students. hygiene and nutrition. Through an innovative partnership with East Carolina University, they can also schedule virtual doctor’s appointments for students at the school site resulting in less missed instructional time. Throughout the duration of the pandemic, our nurses have worked in overdrive and overtime to keep the entire staff and student body safe through screening, testing, contact tracing and constantly collaborating with other health officials. As if we didn’t value them enough already, they brought new meaning to sacrifice and service with a steadfast smile.
./0)%*##/-&'-( School social workers connect school, community and family resources to remove barriers to student success. Barriers to academic success may be lack of school supplies, home support, hunger, homelessness, or poor attendance. Once a barrier is identified, school social workers work with the student, their family, and community organizations to problem-solve and alleviate or eliminate the obstacle. School social workers are also equipped to help students with social-emotional, mental health, and behavioral interventions. They are trained to conduct personal risk and threat assessments and provide a continuum of crisis management supports and if need be, refer students and families for further specialized support. During remote instruction, school social workers helped disconnected students stay on track through countless phone calls and virtual “home” visits.
