Curriculum Innovation
The Curriculum Innovation Department’s role is to support Duplin County Schools’ vision to become an exemplary school system where all students and staff excel in a globally competitive society. Under its large umbrella are PreK-13 Curriculum, Academically or Intellectually Gifted, Beginning Teacher Support, Career and Technical Education, Digital Learning and Media, Exceptional Children’s Program, Federal Programs, Global and Cultural Arts, Health and Physical Education, JROTC, Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, Professional Development, Social-Emotional Learning, and Student Support Services. District curriculum leaders and school-based STEAMA Curriculum Facilitators provide support through the provision of research-based resources, instructional best practices, and innovative lesson design to ensure academic and social-emotional growth in all content areas for all learners.
Perhaps the most foundational element to success in any curriculum area is Reading proficiency. To this end, Duplin County Schools has embraced The Science of Reading. This is an evidence-based reading instruction methodology that will help us learn the latest science behind how children learn to read, the kind of systematic and explicit instruction that works best for students, how to diagnose what is happening when children struggle to read, and how to immediately and intentionally intervene. Our ultimate goal is for all students to read on grade level by the end of third grade; a pivotal time when students begin to transition from learning to read to reading to learn and comprehend more complex content.
In January 2022, the Curriculum Innovation Department, with the help of its Digital Learning and Media Specialists, launched the Duplin Reads to Succeed campaign, focusing on literacy support at school and at home. A website has been developed that provides literacy activities for each grade level, pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. Families and communities can access these activities at home, download, print, and work directly with their children. The website also showcases literacy events happening across our schools to create excitement and foster a love of reading in students. The website is located under the Literacy tab on the top navigation tool bar at www. duplinschools.net.
