Perhaps the most foundational element to success in any curriculum area is Reading proficiency. To this end, Duplin County Schools has embraced The Science of Reading. This is an evidence-based reading instruction methodology that will help us learn the latest science behind how children learn to read, the kind of systematic and explicit instruction that works best for students, how to diagnose what is happening when children struggle to read, and how to immediately and intentionally intervene. Our ultimate goal is for all students to read on grade level by the end of third grade; a pivotal time when students begin to transition from learning to read to reading to learn and comprehend more complex content.

2021-2022

In January 2022, the Curriculum Innovation Department, with the help of its Digital Learning and Media Specialists, launched the Duplin Reads to Succeed campaign, focusing on literacy support at school and at home. A website has been developed that provides literacy activities for each grade level, pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. Families and communities can access these activities at home, download, print, and work directly with their children. The website also showcases literacy events happening across our schools to create excitement and foster a love of reading in students. The website is located under the Literacy tab on the top navigation tool bar at www. duplinschools.net.
