Last year I started this piece off celebrating the start of the school year and the decade. It’s pretty hard to fathom just how much has changed in the year since then. The Government has had to make a number of tough calls in the face of COVID-19, and as a result Hawke’s Bay has too. But what remains true is we have one of the best schooling systems in the world, and parents have stepped up over the past year to help their kids continue to get the best out of it. This time last year we never anticipated the impact the COVID-19 pandemic would have across the globe. But what I have been most proud of, is seeing whole schools, principals, teachers, students and parents – and their communities – adapt to learning differently.
Senior students in particular face a lot of uncertainty. I want to personally reassure them that whatever they choose to do, whether it’s moving into higher education or training, starting an apprenticeship, pursuing an art or sport or moving into work, there is an end to this uncertainty in sight. Our young people continue to amaze me. It is an honour to recognise their strengths and talents and adaptability each year through the Hawke’s Bay Leaders in their Schools publication. I wish each and every one of you well in whatever you choose your future to be, and those students returning to school the very best for the school year ahead. Warm regards Chris Hipkins, Minister of Education

Aim to excel - Whaia te itii kahurangi k At HNHS we acknowledge the trend in leadership away from the authoritative model to one which recognises that all students have developing leadership qualities. We also believe that leadership is an ongoing and developing process. Our concern with the authoritative model is that it often casts shadows over other students who may also have aspirations in this area.
Instead of a small group of autonomous prefects, a number of student committees are responsible for various initiatives which contribute to the life of the school. Formal leadership positions are distributed amongst year 13 House and Committee leaders, while all Year 13 students have the opportunity to be part of these committees as well as being part of the mentoring programme for our junior students.
As such, we encourage all of our students to develop the confidence to Greg Fenton lead by working hard, showing initiative and supporting others. Principal

TE AUTE COLLEGE Kia mataara, e tu- i runga i te whakapono, whakatangata kia kaha kia meatia a- koutou mea katoa i runga i te aroha.
Te Aute College established in 1854 is a state integrated, Ma-ori Anglican boarding school for young men located in Pukehou, Central Hawke’s Bay. The college moto Whakatangata kia kaha – Quit ye like men be strong is taken from the above opening passage, 1 Corinthians 16:13 in the bible. Te Aute College enrolls boarders and day students from Year 9 through to 13 and is a specialised school committed to producing the finest young men in Aotearoa, under the mantle and our special character status of kaupapa Ma-ori, tikanga Ma-ori and Christianity. Any young man who enters the portal of Te Aute College instantly becomes part of this legacy where the amorangi (leading mantra) is Ma-oritanga. Te Aute College is also a specialist school that is set upon the prestigious mantle and whenua (land) bequested by Nga-i Te Whatuia-piti, the local hapu-. Our College is steeped in history dating back to 1854. It is 166 years old and one of the oldest schools in Aotearoa and I am very proud to be the student leader of this great College. My connection with this school began when my father was a student in the 1980s and it was always his intention to send his two sons to Te Aute College. It was my dream to attend Te Aute College and follow in my father’s footsteps, so in 2017 I began my journey alongside my brother who was Deputy Head Boy. Te Aute College means so much more to me than just a school. As an example, the strong brotherhood that we form over the years which is a result of living and sharing together with our brothers. Te Aute students have the privilege of a large whānau network and so can travel anywhere around the world and Te Aute whānau will be there to host. The bond, the friendships and the memories will be embedded in my mind forever. This great school has
Taraia Butler Co-Deputy Head Boy / Ngarimu VC Whare Te Whānau-ā-Āpanui, Whakatohea, Ngāti Ruanui, Ngāi Tai given me so much and taught me life’s lessons. Being a leader means setting the right path forward and creating a strong foundation for our new students. Teaching and supporting the boys to learn and practice Teautetanga is fundamental, so that when it comes time for them to lead the school, they are ready. As said in our College Haka “mate atu he toa, ara mai rā he toa” One leader falls, another shall rise to take his place

Leadership opportunities are offered at each Year level within the school. Each year students from each year level form Leadership Groups, which organise and run various events for their year level. The opportunity to show and grow leadership skills and work with others is an important step in developing our young leaders of the future.
