Last year I started this piece off celebrating the start of the school year and the decade. It’s pretty hard to fathom just how much has changed in the year since then.The Government has had to make a number of tough calls in the face of COVID-19, and as a result Hawke’s Bay has too. But what remains true is we have one of the best schooling systems in the world, and parents have stepped up over the past year to help their kids continue to get the best out of it. This time last year we never anticipated the impact the COVID-19 pandemic would have across the globe. But what I have been most proud of, is seeing whole schools, principals, teachers, students and parents – and their communities – adapt to learning differently.

Senior students in particular face a lot of uncertainty. I want to personally reassure them that whatever they choose to do, whether it’s moving into higher education or training, starting an apprenticeship, pursuing an art or sport or moving into work, there is an end to this uncertainty in sight. Our young people continue to amaze me. It is an honour to recognise their strengths and talents and adaptability each year through the Hawke’s Bay Leaders in their Schools publication. I wish each and every one of you well in whatever you choose your future to be, and those students returning to school the very best for the school year ahead. Cambridge IGCSE Student Achievers

Hastings Boys’ High School is proud of the growth in Merit and Excellence Endorsements in the NCEA examinations. The endorsement system offers students an incentive to work to the best of their ability and to be recognised for their achievements. Many of these students will go on to be future leaders of our school.

Hastings Boys’ High School offers the opportunity for gifted students to extend themselves through the IGCSE Cambridge programme. It gives students the chance to sit these internationally recognised examinations alongside over one million people from over one hundred different countries.

Aim to excel - Whaia te itii kahurangi k At HNHS we acknowledge the trend in leadership away from the authoritative model to one which recognises that all students have developing leadership qualities. We also believe that leadership is an ongoing and developing process. Our concern with the authoritative model is that it often casts shadows over other students who may also have aspirations in this area.

Instead of a small group of autonomous prefects, a number of student committees are responsible for various initiatives which contribute to the life of the school. Formal leadership positions are distributed amongst year 13 House and Committee leaders, while all Year 13 students have the opportunity to be part of these committees as well as being part of the mentoring programme for our junior students.
