What is Christian Rap? Christian rap, also commonly referred to as Christian hip hop, gospel rap, holy hip hop, among other labels, is a sub-genre that has been around since hip hop began, but has more recently gained more mainstream attention. Seen by some as a corny form of hip hop, mainly of today’s rappers that focus on Christian themes prefer to be seen as rappers who are Christian rather than Christian rappers. It’s a subtle distinction, but I think the intention is to stay true to the edgy, in your face style of hip hop, while simultaneously exploring themes inspired by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. So what exactly is Christian rap? Let’s get into it…

King Jehoshaphat Minister/CHH artist/Motivational speaker This man of God has ministered on the same platform with many of the greats, at the Presidential Center where there were 15,000 in the audience, and has received many awards, such as Best Gospel Rap Artist in CT, Most Inspirational Artist in CT, and an award from the McDonald’s Gospel Fest. However, none of that moves him. He is a great father to his three children. He has a heart of compassion for the lost and the inner city youth, and he is not afraid to reach out and give back to those in need. King Jehoshaphat believes that he has been given this gift from God to encourage brothers and sisters of the faith and win souls for the Lord. His only desire is for God to be glorified in the name of Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit through the message of salvation.

Definition: As with the exploration of other rap genres, we first explore the definition of the words. The word Christian is defined as “of, relating to, or derived from Jesus Christ or His teachings.” Based on this definition, we can say that Christian rap is rap music that is inspired by the life of Jesus Christ and His teachings from the Gospel. AllMusic.com defines Christian rap as “hip hop with religious and inspirations themes.” Wikipedia.org states that Christian hip hop is “is hip hop music characterized by a Christian worldview, with the general purposes of evangelization (Christian mission work), edifying some members of the church and/or simply entertaining.” The history of hip hop has always had a heavy Christian influence. Being a culture and musical genre that emerged from a predominantly urban, African-American community, it has always been vastly intertwined with various religious inspirations, including Christianity. With that said, not every Christian rapper chooses to focus on explicitly Christian themes in their lyrics. According to Wikipedia.org, one of the first explicitly Christian songs was a track titled “Jesus Christ (The Gospel Beat)” by rapper MC Sweet, released in 1982. Additionally, the first album which was entirely focused on Christian themes “Bible Break” by artist Stephen Wiley, released in 1986. Since then, Christian themes and lyrics have found there way into just a bout every rap style, including west coast, east coast, gangsta rap, pop rap, chopped and screwed, etc, making Christian rap very versatile. According to Wikipedia.org, “Christian rap has almost exclusively come out Protestant traditions in the United States, although there is a small Catholic Rap scene that has recently emerged, and there are also small Christian rap scenes in the UK, Australia, Brazil, Canada and many other countries where Christians reside and hip hop music is popular.”

Greatness Births Greatness: The Impact of a Mentor by Eturuvie Erebor A mentor is an experienced and trusted adviser, a counsellor or a guide and a requirement for anyone seeking greatness. If you really want to be great you must deliberately seek out a man or woman who is already where you want to be and bring yourself into a mentor / mentee relationship with them, giving them permission to guide you into the same place of success that they already occupy. This is one path to greatness that many overlook out of ignorance but, for those who understand how it works, it has delivers numerous rewards. A group of four hundred men joined themselves to David at the time he was running away from Saul. The Bible referred to them as men who were worthless, in debt and discontent; in other words they were failures or nonentities, if you like. However, as David began to mentor them in no time they were transformed, and a few chapters later, the Bible referred to the same men thus, "These be the mighty men that David had." They moved from worthless men to mighty men because of the presence of a mentor (who was himself a mighty man) in their lives. As I studied the accomplishments of these mighty men of David, I realised that like their mentor, David, these men also killed giants, as a matter of fact on a certain day in the battlefield, a giant, Ishbi-benob, would have killed David but for the swift intervention of the mighty men. They became fierce warriors, and a force to be reckoned with, men who initially were nobodies. Another example of the impact of a mentor on a life is the story of Joshua. As the children of Israel journeyed from Egypt towards the land of Canaan, Joshua brought himself into proximity with Moses and from that point Moses mentored him. Everywhere Moses went, Joshua was present and eventually the years of mentoring paid off because at the demise of Moses, Joshua became the natural choice for his replacement and he was able to take over as leader and succeed because he had learnt how to lead the children of Israel through years of being mentored by Moses. Simon Peter was mentored by Jesus for a space of three and a half years so when Jesus died Peter naturally took over as the head of the apostles and early church and what seemed like fruitless years of mentorship with his master soon began to pay off as he did greater things than Jesus had done. For instance, Peter did not have to lay hands on sick people for them to be healed as Jesus had done; as he walked past in the streets, his shadow fell on them and they were healed. His first message brought salvation to three thousand souls. These feats were not recorded in the ministry of Jesus but Peter accomplished them because he was mentored by Jesus. Finally, there is Elisha who came into proximity with Elijah for the purpose of being mentored. He also was made great through mentorship. At the translation of Elijah, Elisha received a double portion of Elijah's spirit so that in his life time, he doubled the miracles of Elijah. Like Peter and Joshua, Elisha stepped into his mentor's shoes instantly and by reason of years of mentorship the shoes were a perfect fit. As he crossed the Jordan alone on his return journey following his master's departure he was able to use the mantle Elijah left behind and command the river to part exuding the same ease and confidence displayed by Elijah earlier on. The sons of the prophets who watched him from afar knew without any doubt that he was in Elijah's stead and they bowed themselves to the ground before him. The lives of the aforementioned Bible characters reveal the impact of a mentor on the destiny of any individual. They all became great men because they were mentored by great men. It is interesting to note that Peter, Joshua and Elisha not only became great men but, they stepped into the shoes of their great mentors and did greater things. If you desire to be great, seek out a great man or woman to mentor you. You will eventually become like your mentor because greatness births greatness. 5

by Steve Countryman Romans 8:37-39 37” In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” To some Christians picturing themselves as more than conquers becomes a difficult task. In a world where entitlements and victim mentalities are the norm those with opposing views are made fun of and bullied. It’s hard to remember that… Ephesians 6:12 “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this [present] darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) places.” For we are to love the sinner but HATE their sin not justify it! Too often those who bully us in the supernatural get away with it unscathed! We blame the person instead of the demonic influence behind the attacks. A harsh word, a partial truth, a lie, something said during a argument or a hasty response sticks with us as we play it over and over again in our mind.

So, I decided to start Remote Like Me. 2. We met at the DNG Retreat in Las Palmas, yay! What made you join the retreat? This decision was way out of the norm for me. I always rolled my eyes at other programs that focus on working and travelling together, but when I saw that there was a DNG retreat, I was immediately interested. I’ve been a part of the DNG community for a while now and I really trust you (Jenny), the members, and its mission. I was drawn to the fact that it was in such a great location and I was dying to step foot in Spain. The affordable price really made it a nobrainer.

Dear Educator The Academy of Music Theater has opened their doors once again on October 11th and 12th, 2017, for a field trip for students in grades K-12 (college students are also encouraged) to attend the production of “From the Boat to Obama & Beyond.” We hope that all will be able to come and experience American history in a whole new innovative and theatrical way. Students will watch as forcibly displaced Africans evolve into African Americans through skits, poetry, songs and dance. The production celebrates the achievements of African Americans throughout the world and entertainingly educates a diverse generation about the contributions of African Americans in the United States and abroad. What is “From the Boat to Obama?” The production is a shining example of musical ethnic theater, complete with amazing dance numbers, period wardrobe, eminently remarkable songs, plus touching poetry, oracle presentations, etc. The Musical highlights notable, historic moments in the African-American experience. The play brings to life the richness of Africa's cultures transplanted in other countries and America. The production captures enslavement and removal of Africans from their native home land via the Atlantic passage. From there the audience is taken on a journey over the gulfs of time from the 18th century to the modern day world as we know it. This production moves in a historical wave. Starting from the burning of the Black Wall Street, slaves shipped to Spain and Jamaica, reconstruction, inventions and creations, the Sixteen Street Church experience, and ending with the accomplishments of President Barack Obama. The objective of “From the Boat to Obama” is to help all students increase their comprehension of history, diversity, and appreciation of and respect of all cultural differences. We believe in the power of art to transform lives of young people. We believe the benefits of the musical and theatrical arts disciplines can provide: diversity awareness, promote self-esteem, positive cultural appreciation, and expose students to the educational benefits of the integrated arts. Our mission is to bridge the educational gap for children who are not adequately exposed to the arts in conjunction with teaching expressive dance, which enables our youth to develop their creativity, awareness and self-esteem through knowledge and accomplishments in the performing arts.

As a growing organization, we envision achieving the following programming objectives as we develop new, diverse theatrical projects: • • • •

• •

Build self-confidence; teach children how to focus while maintaining self-control and discipline. Clarify the misconceptions pertaining to the arts due to lack of exposure and information. Create positive and meaningful relationships within the community. Present non-traditional theater that showcases the vibrant diversity of the Greater Hartford community. Encourage family involvement and new audience participation by providing Quality Theater that is culturally diverse. Assist schools in meeting statutory obligation to teach about diverse culture and historical experiences.

The cast of From The Boat To Obama & Beyond is returning October 11th and 12th, 2017, to the Academy of Music with a new theme: “PAYING IT FORWARD”.

This year we are asking students and teachers to get involved with their community by supplying the needs of those less fortunate. Those that are in need of a pair of socks or a t-shirt but cannot afford it. We believe by having students share their hearts with children in their age group, they become a part of making the world a better place and show others we are capable of giving, helping and learning outside of the classroom and the home.

Please email us or call 860-888-6597 for your seats. Again, the only cost of a seat is an item from the list. If a student cannot provide an item, that will not stop them from attending. Please share this information with fellow educators and indicate which day your school will attend: Wednesday the 11th or Thursday the 12th at 10:00am Please see the list below: Socks, t-shirts, pencils, paper, crayon, note book, pens, rulers, calculators

For more information, please call 860-888-6597 between 11:00am and 4:00pm or send an email to transforminganew@gmail.com. Ask how you may obtain seats for your school by giving back to those in your community that are in need.

The items should be placed in a box with the school name and address, principal’s name, teacher’s name.

Thank you,

Your items with go to shelters that house parents with children. Once your box is received, you will receive a thank you letter from the location it was delivered to.

Reflecting upon Friendship By Shell Vera

Jesus had high requirements for those in His inner circle. He asked them to support His mission, leave all behind to be where He needed them to be at the drop of a call, asked them to pray for Him, challenged them to step out of their comfort zones, and commanded they go to the ends of the Earth to share His mission. In fact, through their friendship and time together, His mission became their mission. Throughout the Bible, we see various level of friendship, from soul ties between Jonathan and David to the love and adoration between Mary and Jesus. We see Christ and Peter and hear about Jesus' love for John. We see God and Abraham, Ruth and Naomi, Elijah and Elisha. Each of these friendships shows us a different element of friendship necessary for walking this Christian life with God. Lately, I've been challenged in my own idea of what friendship looks like and have been seeking out His guidance on where I should spend my time. I don't want to waste the time given to me on mundane relationships but instead want friendships that matter and make a difference. Friends that challenge me and help me rise as I am doing the same for them. These friends may not be the ones I have always had. They may not be people I know well yet. But I know I want to seek His will and ensure I am surrounded by folks where there is a true giving and receiving. I sometime see posts on FaceBook and hear feedback from folks that show there are a lot of people out there who spend more time wanting to be included in others' lives than understanding who their circle should be. Next time you find yourself thinking on why someone isn't spending more time with you, instead of getting mad at them or making posts / comments or sending texts to others and questioning the person's loyalties, try asking yourself this: • Have I proven myself to be selflessly committed to the person or have I only done things for which my desires and needs could be addressed? • Have I lifted this person up and spoken life into them, showing my support of their mission and ensuring they know I believe in them? • Have I shown that I am following the Lord's leading in our friendship or have I spent more time pushing my own agenda? When you understand the call on your life and the responsibility it comprises, you NEED to protect it. Part of the protection is ensuring you are surrounded by people going where you are going, who are staying prayed up and offering up true worship and praise, and who you know will support your ministry. And while some support can be shown from afar, take note that Jesus ministers with touch and proximity. He could have sent out a word to heal ANY and ALL of those people AND us, but He instead choose a personal touch. If you truly are a friend, support your friends' missions and ministries. Show up. Make sacrifices. And most of all, stop with the backbiting and trying to make yourself a victim because they choose time with someone else over you. It's time to step up. If you want more friends, study what friendship looks like and be one to others. If you want to have a circle of friends, ask God to show you what is needed and how you can become part of a circle of friends or create your own. But don't ask for someone else's life... instead ask Him to lead people to you who are walking on your path, who are focused on similar missions and ministries, who are equally yoked with you. There is so much more to this walk than thinking "we are both Christian"... equally yoked goes into the depths where you can be afraid to go deep and understand someone's call and be willing to support it beyond what's comfortable and beyond judgment. It means you need to offer up each possible friend to God and ask Him to lead you on the level of interaction and the depths you will go to with that individual. I am on a mission this year to have fewer surface level relationships and more friendships that focus on lifting each other up, supporting one another's ministries, and being there to pray for and encourage one another. I'm all set with superficial friendships in which you know my name and yet do not know how to lift me up when you see that I am struggling. And I pray you won't be satisfied with this in your own life. Be purposeful about where you invest your time and who you allow into your circle. Some people aren't ready for what true relationship looks like, don't allow them in to bring you down. If you take this challenge it may mean some people will need to exit your life. Let them. Help them leave. It will open room for those who are supposed to be in your life to enter in. Don't throw your pearl before swine, rather invest time wisely and be purposeful about where your time and resources go.

The Differences between Healthy Families and Dysfunctional Families Part One

by Stephanie Reck

God created families to love, nurture, protect and support each other. Healthy families are essential for belonging and acceptance. However, not all families are healthy and some families would be considered dysfunctional. There are certain characteristics that healthy and dysfunctional families possess. Traits of a health family: •Enjoy spending time together. Spending time together is not dreaded, but in fact is pleasurable. •Communication is open, honest and frequent, you never have to guess why someone is upset or does not like something. It is difficult to have healthy relationships with others when people don’t say what they really mean. Being upfront and honest is a main ingredient for a healthy family relationship. •Love is not withdrawn if you think or behave differently. •They respect each other. No one forces the other to conform or to be like someone else. Healthy families also respect each other’s time and space. •Everyone knows their given roles. Moms are moms, not the daughter playing the role of “mom.” •There are clear boundaries. Healthy families don’t assume your “on-board,” without asking you first and then not respecting your decision. •Trust permeates through healthy families. Promises are kept. Reliability and dependability are paramount in healthy families. •They don’t get easily offended, mainly because there is frequent, open and honest communication where grace abounds. No question is inappropriate and no opinion is disrespected. •They support each other through the triumphs and trials of life. •United through their relationship with God. Healthy families pray for one another, encourage each other with scriptures, and encourage each other in their walk with God. •Encourage, edify and build-up each other. To sum up the traits of a healthy family you should have: pleasure in being together, open and honest communication, clear boundaries, mutual respect, trust, support, encouragement, and unity through relationship with God.

The Differences between Healthy Families and Dysfunctional Families Part 2

by Stephanie Reck Toxic people: • Use others for their benefit; regardless of the impact on others. • Lie easily and frequently to get what they want. • Blame others and rarely take responsibly for their actions. • Drain your time, energy and resources-you can never do enough to help them. • Pit family members against each other. • Are only interested in being a part of something if there is a benefit to them. • Can be needy and manipulative. • Don’t seem to learn from their mistakes. Drama, chaos and confusion follow them. Being part of a healthy family is one of the greatest blessings that we can have, but belonging to a dysfunctional family can be damaging to your mind, body, and spirit.

For a FREE Consultation or for More Information, Call: 860 840 - 2630.

You may need to implement and evaluate some needed changes if you are part of a dysfunctional family. Chances are you have been dealing with your dysfunctional family most of your life unless you married into one, and some changes are needed so you can regain your sanity. Basically, you’re taking back your life.

Here are a few tips you can begin to implement: Detach emotionally in love without any anger, bitterness or unforgiveness. Truly want and speak the best for them, but guard your heart from being pulled and swayed by their dysfunction that traps you like bait. Detach physically. Take a break from any phone call, texts, or visits. If you find your losing your peace and getting angry when you engage with them, it is time to back-off. Get real with yourself. Are your family relationships harming you or benefiting you? When and if you do reengage with your family, let it be on your terms with boundaries. Take care of you and the healthy 14 relationships that are in your life.

What is Family Bonding Time? Family bonding time is time the family spends together meaningfully. This is a designated time your family plans to interact with each other over a group of activities or a major, fun project. Family members learn how to listen and work together. Children learn how to behave in society by watching their parents interact with each other and with the world. Family bonding times are a great way to model expected behaviors inside the family circle and with others in the community. Modeling expected behaviors is also a great way for the parents in the family to learn how to communicate to each other as well.

Promising your personal time at least one day out of the week will help members in your family gain a sense of self worth. Children that have guardians that take the time with them, begin to assign value to their family time. Children that do not have a sense of family values are more likely to be influenced by friends that do not necessarily have their best interests at heart

As Christian women we’ve assumed the roles of daughter, mother, sister, wife, aunt, friends and co-worker. All of these roles require the wisdom of God and key skillsets to successfully fulfill. Keys to Becoming a Victorious Woman was birthed from my desire to see Christian women victorious in all areas of their life. While working as a Manager for many years I have always been in search of self -enrichment resources and conferences aimed at equipping me with the skills necessary to successfully fulfill my many roles. As with every other need in my life I have found the answers within the Word of God. From the Old Testament to the New Testament, God has used various women to provide us with master keys that when applied to our life will unlock doors of victory in every area. Keys to Becoming a Victorious Woman presents 26 biblical keys demonstrated by women within the bible that led them to monumental victories that left their mark in bible history. The 26 keys discussed in this book provides wisdom to women and girls of all ages and when applied today, will unlock doors to the their next level of victory spiritually, professionally and relationally. Keys to Becoming a Victorious Woman is laid out in such a way that it may be studied individually, in a group setting, book club or Women’s self enrichment workshops. Joy Comes in the Morning by ginny smith I have been praying that the Holy Spirit would guide me as I attempt to share with you how God helped me through the trials in my life, especially the death of my husband. On September 26, 1983, my husband took his own life after a along and painful illness. It was a very dark time in my life and I had to claim God's promise that he would never leave me nor forsake me. I began to think about Joseph who had been in exile for many years. His path had many thorns along the way, but the hard places had to be overcome so God's plans could be accomplished. His brothers rose against him to kill him,, and yet God used this for his good. Joseph was truly fruitful in the land of affliction. He was a fruitful bough whose branches ran over the wall. He walked in a valley, but later it was followed by a mountain and so it is with our lives. Our trials are not without purpose or meaning. The miracle is that God can bring joy where once there was sadness. We can come out of bondage into freedom, just as Joseph did. God will bring all of our testings to a successful conclusion. I found in my grieving that "weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning". In spite of the circumstance of my life, I could still have the joy of the Lord and I found that the joy of the Lord was my strength. God simply put his arms around me, lifted me up and gave me peace that only he could give. It is wonderful to know that we can have this joy in our hearts when we keep our eyes upon Jesus. gstahlma@hotmail.com I am a mother of 3 and have 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. I have written 4 books of inspirational poetry. The purpose of my books is to reach out to other broken people . These poems are a testimony of 17 God's grace and mercy in my own life.

In this book, the author discusses what she believes to be the greatest human enemy that has paralyzed and killed dreams: NEGATIVITY. We will be taking a closer look at this spirit and how to identify and eliminate it from trespassing and invading our lives. Negative thinking and speaking is a poison that destroys hopes and dreams. When the mind is consumed with negativity, there is a sense of defeat, despair, and discouragement. The enemy is the father of all lies; he wants you to see your situation as being hopeless. Once the enemy entraps his victim, he does everything in his power to keep them there giving birth to inefficiency and ineffectiveness, while life passes by. Your choices will determine your personal success: NO MORE NEGATIVITY!
