David Unaipon COMMEMORATED ON THE $50 NOTE

DAVID UNAIPON was an exceptional Australian, an Aboriginal man of the Ngarrindjeri people, a preacher, inventor, author and spokesman on Aboriginal affairs. He is featured on the Australian $50 note in commemoration of his work. He gained a reputation, of being ‘Australia’s Leonardo De Vinci’ for his promotion of scientific ideas. He was born at the Point McLeay Mission (now Raukkan) on the banks of Lake Alexandrina, the fourth of nine children of James and Nymbulda Ngunaitponi, of the Ngarrindjeri people. His father was a preacher. David was schooled at Point McLeay Mission School and described as bright, intelligent and well-mannered. Unaipon left school at 13 to work as a servant for C.B. Young in Adelaide where Young encouraged the young David Unaipon’s interest in literature, philosophy, science and music. In 1890, he returned to Point McLeay where he was apprenticed to a bootmaker and appointed as the church organist. After working variously as a storeman and book keeper, in January 1902 he married Katherine Carter, a Tangane woman. He was employed for years by the Aborigines’ Friends’ Association and travelled widely preaching and seeking support for the Mission until he retired in 1959. He continued working on his inventions. David Unaipon is famous for his inventions, in particular an improved mechanical sheep shearing hand tool. Although his idea revolutionised sheep shearing, he received no financial reward. He applied for patents for as many as nineteen inventions including a centrifugal motor, a multi-radial wheel and a mechanical propulsion device. Unaipon worked on a perpetual motion machine for years. Unfortunately, he was unable to get financial support to develop his ideas. He conceptualised the helicopter 22 years before it became a reality noting it had the same principal to rise as the boomerang. Unaipon’s contribution to Australian society assisted

DAVID UNAIPON (BORN DAVID NGUNAITPONI) (28 SEPTEMBER 1872 – 7 FEBRUARY 1967)

Aboriginal advancement and broke many Indigenous Australian stereotypes. He was an influential man, but was often refused accommodation because of his race. Unaipon’s stance on Aboriginal issues put him into conflict at times with other Aboriginal leaders. He publicly criticised the League’s “Day of Mourning” held on the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet. He feared protests would harm Australia’s reputation overseas and create negative public opinion on Aboriginal people. Unaipon returned to his birthplace in his old age, where he worked on inventions and attempted to reveal the secret of perpetual motion. He was awarded a Coronation Medal in 1953 celebrating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. David Unaipon died at the age of 94. A man of great intelligence and vision, he was well before his time and his achievements truly speak for themselves.

The Littlest Bushranger Birdman of the Coorong Travellers hear strange tales, but perhaps none so strange as the Birdman of the Coorong. When police first heard reports of a diminutive figure riding on an ostrich with gold jewellery glistening on his bare chest, they thought the teller had been at the tavern, or been out in the sun too long. But other reports soon followed and when a decomposed body was discovered with a wound on his forehead, the matter was deadly serious. Police soon found that horses were no match for a sprightly ostrich bounding up the sandhills, especially when they were being fired upon. They discovered that this person was John Francis Peggotty. He was born a tiny baby and not expected to live, but he did. He only grew to the size of a child and had a history of climbing down chimneys of rich Londoners and stealing their jewellery. He was jailed for a time. Now he was holding up unwary travellers along the Coorong. Peggotty could have been mistaken for a bejewelled child, except for his thick black beard. Ostriches had

been released after the fashion market for ostrich feathers had failed and he had been to South Africa and seen the big birds ridden. Peggotty continued his career of crime, leaving in his wake unhappy travellers and more murders. One day, he made the mistake of accosting Carmichael, a tough Coorong fisherman who was returning from fishing. He had a rifle and a horse tethered on the shore. When the would be victim challenged him, the bejewelled bushranger concluded retreat was the better part of valor and took off on his stead with Carmichael on horseback in hot pursuit. At the sandhills, as the ostrich sailed away, Carmichael aimed and fired, wounding Peggotty. The ostrich strode on until a further shot felled it at the top of the high sandhill. Carmichael climbed the soft sandhill, to find the dead ostrich and a trail of blood leading to scrub. He felt disinclined to follow the armed wounded bushranger and departed to report the matter. It is believed Peggoty’s bones lie in the Coorong sandhills still, along with a vast jewellery fortune.

The Cooro

THE COORONG is a protected wetland area with a chain of lagoons sheltered by sweeping sand dunes from the sea, stretching for 130 kms. It’s located at the end of the River Murray, where the river meets the Southern Ocean (near the Murray Mouth) and stretches to Kingston in the South-East. Its natural beauty, abundant wildlife and unspoilt coastline make it one of South Australia’s most visited destinations. The area’s wetlands provide habitat for many local bird species as well as for migratory wading birds – many flying in from as far away as Alaska. It’s a Ramsar-listed wetland of international importance. The area, including Lakes Albert and Alexandrina, is recognised under the Ramsar Convention meanining the area has international significance with attention and rules to ensure its conservation. The name ‘Coorong’ comes from the Ngarrindjeri name ‘Kurangk’ meaning long, narrow neck. The

ong A National Treasure lower River Murray, including the Coorong and Lakes Albert and Alexandrina, were once one of the most densely populated areas in Australia prior to European settlement. There was abundant food – fish, shellfish and game. A number of middens with ancient shells remain. The Ngarrindjeri people are the Traditional Owners, who have lived in the area for thousands of years. The Coorong remains an intrinsic part of their culture, spirituality and identity. The Coorong was established as a National Park in 1966, more than 50 years ago. It was recognised for its ecological importance. There’s lots to do in the park, such as camping on the edge of the wild ocean, kayaking in the lagoons, exploring the sand dunes, 4W Driving, birdwatching and fishing – or simply relaxing. Enjoy your holiday on the Coorong. Get your National Parks Passes via Page 15

The park provides habitat for nationally threatened species like the orange-bellied parrot, freckled duck, Murray hardyhead and southern bell frog. Emus and other wildlife live here.

THE ECOSYSTEM OF THE COORONG IS SLOWLY MENDING

The Coorong has shown positive signs of recovery following the devastating impacts of the Millennium Drought, and years of basin-wide over water allocation, but more work is needed to restore it back to full health. But it’s not all doom and gloom. The introduction of environmental water has increased fish species like the lamprey and congolli, and some aquatic plants are also bouncing back.

THE COORONG is also an important breeding ground for pelicans. Thousands of them call the Coorong home, thanks to the area’s abundance and diversity of fish. Mr Percival exists, but there’s more than one. The book Storm Boy written by Colin Thiele and published in 1964 was about a boy’s relationship with a pelican called Mr Percival. The story raised the profile of the Coorong after the Storm Boy movie in 1977, which was filmed in and around the area. A new Storm Boy remake was released in 2019.

Kingston KINGSTON South East is a progressive coastal town on the shores of Lacepede Bay, about 240 kilometres southeast of Adelaide. It is the business centre of the surrounding countryside. The Big Lobster on the main road gives a clue to the fishing industry here which has been and is the mainstay of the town. Tourism is popular especially in the summer months. The beach is big wide safe swimming beach. There are wineries close by and farming continues as it has for many years. The sea can be treacherous for shipping with submerged rock outcrops and numerous shipwrecks caused the lighthouse at Cape Jaffa to be built where it stood guard for just over 100 years. Kingston has a number of substantial buildings and the jetty once had ships visiting bringing goods and

The beaches start here loading wool. Originally there was a lighthouse at the end of the jetty. Part of the jetty was destroyed in a storm, but there’s plenty of jetty left to fish or tale a stroll. It’s a laid back friendly town with numerous services including a hospital, and a fine green golf course. The caravan park is set on the foreshore and there are RV parks both ends of the town. It’s a favourite place to retire and a good base to stay for visitors. Coorong National Park is nearby. The Cape Jaffa Lighthouse Cape Jaffa Lighthouse has a remarkable story. It was erected under water on the Margaret Brock Reef. The King brothers, both engineers erected the lighthouse 8 kms out to sea on the reef. It took nearly three years as construction was only possible for 4 months of the year at low tide in good weather when the reef was only knee deep under water. Thirteen legs of the platform were attached and the lighthouse was finally completed. The light shone brightly for 100 years, warning of treacherous reefs keeping ships safe. This was in response to ships being lost along the coast. In the 1800s Kingston was a thriving port; ships were the road trains of today. In 1852 the Margaret Brock barque was sailing from Adelaide to Melbourne with cargo, passengers and crew when she came to a shuddering halt in darkness, having collided with the rocky reef. Captain McMeckan tried to back the ship off, but to no avail, then crew and passengers threw cargo overboard, lightening the load. By daylight it was seen the ship was rapidly taking on water and they abandoned ship. The weather was deteriorating. Through pounding surf, crowded long boats carried people to shore. There wasn’t enough room and seven volunteers remained. The 20

captain and a few crew returned to the ship and rescued them in appalling conditions – the rolling ship collapsed shorty after. This heroic effort saved all lives. The survivors then walked 300 kms back to Adelaide. More disasters occurred. A lighthouse was commissioned in Birmingham, England to build a grouphole lighthouse which would screw into the rocks. It was built, then dismantled and shipped to Australia. Cape Jaffa Lighthouse shone its first light in January, 1872. At the time, the Overland Telegraph Line was being completed between Adelaide and Darwin, connecting Australia with the world, just ten years after the first epic crossing of Australia. It was 14 years before the statue of Liberty was built. Two keepers and their families shared the eight rooms of the lighthouse, with a third keeper based on shore. Each keeper worked for half a night at the helm. Hourly, he turned the crank 88 times keeping the light tower revolving. The huge light has 1,728 prisms and shone for over 40 kms. The light worked like a grandfather clock with a set of weights weighing some 66 kilos, which took 4 minutes to wind to the top and keepers wound every hour to keep the light burning. Each keeper worked two weeks on, then one week on shore. They signalled with

CAPE JAFFA LIGHTHOUSE flags to boats by day and by morse code to contact the shore and boats at night. The children must have been well behaved, doing schoolwork and playing in confined space. After warning ships of the danger for 100 years, the lighthouse was decommissioned in 1972. The replacement beacon flashed automatically 12 times a minute and the future of the old lighthouse was in jeopardy. Rumours abounded. Many fishermen used this tower as a beacon to guide them to their craypots and thought it an old friend. Local farmer Robert Mock set up camp on the platform, equipped with tent, tucker, camera and phone. He called local media stating his refusal to come down. After lobbying by the National Trust and others, a bill was passed in parliament and the old lighthouse was safe. The lighthouse was gifted to the National Trust. Local farmer John Barnett supplied a block of land and the enormous feat of dismantling the structure and ferrying the pieces ashore by helicopter and boats took place. The lighthouse was re-erected and furnished with original furnishing and interpretive displays. Up the narrow spiral staircase, visitors can glimpse what life was like as a lighthouse family. It’s an experience not to be missed!

See how the lighthouse keepers and their families lived out at sea – fascinating displays of rooms the way they were and shipwreck items. Open 1- 3pm School Holidays or by Appointment: Phone 0427 854 175 Marine Parade, Kingston Email: kingstonsenationaltrustsa@gmail.com

Chinese Gold Seekers Disembark in Robe When Gold was discovered in New South Wales and then the fabulously rich finds in Victoria in 1851, men left their jobs all over the world and rushed to the goldfields to make their fortunes. The first ships bringing Chinese gold seekers to Victoria arrived in 1853 and they made their way to the goldfields from Melbourne or Geelong. There were soon 33,000 Chinese on the Goldfields mainly working the alluvial gold fields, often reworking abandoned diggings. This meant other miners starting a new one, could not return to their old mine if the new one was unsuccessful, a reason the Chinese were unpopular. The Victorian government, alarmed at the huge influx of Chinese, proclaimed a limit of 1 passenger per 10 tons of cargo, and a polltax of £10 on every Chinese immigrant to land at Victorian ports. It was a huge cost on top of the Chinese already large expenses. Consequently passegers were landed at Sydney or Adelaide and left to find their own way. Some chartered ships to Robe, the closest seaport to Victoria. Thus the small village of Robe became the port of choice. By 1857, Robe was a thriving port having exported more than

£1 million of wool. In wool season, drays pulled by bullocks and horses lined the main street all the way from Lake Fellmongery waiting to unload. Into this mix, the first ship Land o’ Cakes arrived directly to Robe with 264 Chinese passengers. This was followed by 3 more ships, and more after that, bringing 14,675 Chinese gold seekers during the year. The Chinese wore native costumes with their hair tied into pigtails down their backs. A camp accommodating 3,000 people sprang up. They set off to the goldfields in groups at a half trott carrying their goods balanced each end of a long pole. Some hired carts and guides. It would have been interesting to see the activity with ships bringing goldseekers and wool being exported. There were several shipwrecks too. Guichen Bay Harbourmaster worked hard to clear the port and later wrote: “I often worked night and day to get these ships out of the harbour and was as pleased to see the fore top sails in the offing as the Captains themselves.”. Southern Ocean Shipwreck Geltwood (1876-76)

Location: G eltwood Reef, about 12km southeast of Rivoli Bay (-37.643917°S 140.196017°E) Vessel type: iron-hulled barque

Admella (1857-59)

Location: Carpenters Rocks (-37.876463°S 140.351373°E) Vessel type: iron-hulled screw steamer Admella was built by Laurence Hill & Co. in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1857. She was a fast ship with sail as well as steam and serviced Adelaide, Melbourne and Launceston, hence her name Ad me la. She was thought a safe ship with three air tight compartments riveted into the hold. Admella left Port Adelaide before dawn on 5th August 1859 for Melbourne. During the night there was a gentle roll and then the heavy swell lifted the ship onto the rocky reef at Carpenters Rocks. Then she fell over with masts horizontal and broke into three at the rivets of the “safety” devices. Sailors and passengers scrambled onto the stable part of the ship. Some were washed away. Lifeboats were lost and the rockets were too wet to fire. Next day they could see they were only a mile off shore, instead of out at sea. Several volunteers lost their lives swimming to shore to raise the alarm. A raft was built and two friends reached the shore and trekked 20 kms to MacDonnell lighthouse. Survivors lashed themselves to rigging, their strength sapped by the cold, lack of food, water and shelter. Some slipped quietly into the boiling sea to watery graves. Others went mad by drinking sea water. Fires were lit on the shore to give survivors hope. Rescue attempts were made but mountainous seas drove rescuers back. It was not until the eighth day that rescue eventuated. The sea had abated a little and the lifeboat from the shore rescued 3 people. Ships Lady Bird and Ant had arrived with lifeboat and whaleboat. The remaining 19 survivors were taken off by the Portland lifeboat and taken to Portland to be looked after by the hotels. Eighty nine men, women and children had died. The sea claimed the rest of Admella, the pride of the Coast. 32

Geltwood was built in 1876 in Harrington, Scotland. The barque was on the final leg of its maiden voyage from Liverpool. The voyage was expected to take 90 days and was due to arrive in Melbourne on 22 June 1876. The wreck event did not become known until 5 July and it is supposed that the vessel wrecked on 14 June when there was a severe storm and distress signals were seen and heard in the region. Geltwood had struck a reef about 1.8km offshore. None of the 31 persons on board survived. The only four bodies recovered are buried in the old Millicent cemetery. The wreck was controversial for the looting of cargo that occurred in the aftermath.

Konig Willem II (1840-57)

Location: Guichen Bay, Robe, exact location unknown (-37.140344°S 139.7947°E) Vessel type: wooden ship Konig Willem II was built in Kinderdijk, Netherlands, in 1840. After arriving in Guichen Bay, and disembarking its 397 Chinese immigrants, a heavy south-easterly gale caused the vessel to drag its anchor throughout the night and into the next morning. At noon on 30 June 1857, the vessel’s captain made sail, intentionally beaching the vessel on Long Beach to the northeast of Robe. Heavy seas broke over the vessel and it was totally wrecked. Sixteen crew members perished while getting ashore in the stormy conditions.

Margaret Brock (1848-52)

Location: Margaret Brock Reef, 6.5km west of Cape Jaffa (-36.948679°S 139.59581°E) Vessel type: wooden barque Margaret Brock was built in Hobart in 1848. On 20 November 1852, the barque left Port Adelaide with cargo and passengers, bound for Melbourne. At 2am on 23 November, the vessel struck an unknown reef about 6.5km west of Cape Jaffa. Attempts to get the ship off were unsuccessful, and the passengers and crew went ashore in the ship’s long boat, and the vessel subsequently broke up on the reef, later named Margaret Brock Reef.

Cape Martin Lighthouse Walk

A short walk through the dunes from town passes the lighthouse and overlooks the boatyard and Penguin Island. The island is a sanctuary and home to fairy penguins and sea birds. Cape Martin Lighthouse was established in 1960.

Old Wool & Grain Store

Originally a shipping warehouse, the museum has many interesting displays of the early days of the area, including the house at the top. Whaling was the first industry in the area. There was a whaling station at Whalers Point, Rivoli Bay North. Small boats set out when a whale was sighted and were harpooned. Dead whales were towed back to the shore station for processing.

SALMON HOLE, BEACHPORT

Beachport Jetty

Work on the original jetty began in early 1878 with a contract for a British firm to build it. It was to be 4,000 feet long with a “T” at the end of 122 feet. However the Government was unhappy with progress and revoked the contract and undertook completion. The jetty was finally finished in 1882, after the Mount Gambier to Beachport Railway was built. The structure of the jetty was never quite satisfactory and a few years later the end “T” section and part of the jetty were removed leaving 2536 feet (772 metres) remaining. It is the second longest jetty in the state. More to Explore www.exploringaustralia.com.au

Staying Safe in your 4WD • •

STAY ON THE MARKED TRACKS ON THE MAPS PROVIDED. For ANY sand driving (including tracks), reduce tyre pressures to 15-20psi. The beaches are very soft, tides and seas can be very high. It is recommended that you obtain a Tide Time Chart, Make sure you have appropriate recovery gear.IMPORTANT: when driving on dirt roads or bitumen with reduced tyre pressures, keep your speed below 60km – this will reduce the risk of potential blowouts due to overheating the tyre sidewalls (bulge). Throughout the year, EXTREME care should be taken on ALL beaches due to soft sand - these can be avoided by following the inland track - IF IN DOUBT, WALK THE BEACH. Charges may be incurred if assistance is requested due to bogging on beaches - if possible, travel with at least one other vehicle If you have UHF radio use channel 10 within the park – use the scan function just in case! Phone coverage is often poor so you need to climb to the nearest high point to phone for help. Engage 4 X 4 once you leave the main road and use low range as appropriate The park has single lane tracks in most areas – oncoming vehicles may be encountered. Use caution on crests and blind corners. A RED flag on a pole is highly recommended 40 kph speed limits apply to ALL areas within the park ALL vehicles must be registered (including motor cycles AND quad bikes). Fines apply for non-compliance (for off track offenders and unregistered vehicles)

Enjoy panoramic views of the ocean and Lake George. Whilst exploring the park you will see the middens – remains of shellfish left by the Boandik people many years ago. You will need a Pass from Nation Parks (available from Visitor Centres) and note that wood fires and solid fuel fires are prohibited. For More Information: Beachport Visitor Centre (08) 8735 8029

Southend SOUTHEND is a quiet cray fishing port and holiday village near Canunda National Park, 20 kms south of Beachport and 27 kms north of Millicent. The small settlement hosts one of the largest fleets of Rock Lobster fishing vessels on the Limestone Coast. The jetty is busy where the catch is unloaded and is a popular spot for fishing. There is a general store and a caravan park. It was the first seaport in the region when in 1845 Captain Underwood established a store and jetty at the southern end of Rivoli Bay to cater for settlers and passing ships. A year later the settlement was surveyed and named Grey town after Governor Grey. In 1971 it was renamed Southend. One of the anchors of the Geltwood ship is set as a memorial at the lookout on Cape Buffon drive. It honours the Geltwood and those who have perished at sea. On the 5th July 1876, the Geltwood, a three-masted hull barque, on its maiden voyage from England was tragically wrecked a mile offshore, 1.6 kms from Rivoli Bay. There were no survivors. Canunda National Park

The spectacular coastline of cliffs and long stretches of surf beaches feature in CANUNDA NATIONAL PARK. The park is some 40 kms in length sandwiched between the ocean and Lake Bonney. There’s a diversity of coastal habitats to enjoy bushwalking, observe the birdlife, surf the waves or snorkel. Try your luck off the rocks where varieties of fish or crayfish may be caught. Evidence of the Boandik Peoples can be seen along the coast.

Four-wheel driving is enjoyable along the full length of the park by following the marker posts through the sand dunes and along Geltwood Beach. Camping fees apply. Please book and pay for your camp site online or via the visitor centre before you go. illicent Visitor Information For more information: M Centre Ph (08) 8733 0904

Millicent

MILLICENT is a modern progressive town in the heart of the Limestone Coast. It’s the business centre of the district, about halfway between Adelaide and Melbourne. The town is well served with attractions, cafes, restaurants and shopping and is the ideal place to stay. Millicent has the advantage of having two main streets which run paralell in the town centre. For the second street, turn left, when heading north and turn right when heading south. Conservation parks, beaches and other attractions are a short drive away.

Ewens Ponds EWENS PONDS is one of Australia’s natural wonders where you can dive. Ewens Ponds is located 25kms south of Mount Gambier. The Ewens Ponds is one of the best and iconic freshwater dive sites within South Australia as underwater visibility is excellent, up to 80 metres (260 ft).

Ewens Ponds Conservation Park, Diving & Snorkelling, Mount Gambier

Apart from visiting this pond, you can also take a tour to the adjacent Ewens Ponds Conservation Park to see its scenic spots and an array of flora and fauna. Below the surface of the water, you can also see the cracks in the limestone and feel the filtered and cool 56

water currents coming through the caves beneath. The Ewens Ponds has three main ponds; the second pond is just 5 metres deep and has a beautiful view with the bubbling water through a silt-covered rugged bottom. The third pond is approximately eight metres deep with a shallow cave underneath. Each of the ponds can be dived throughout the year; however, summer is the best time to dive at Ewens. The Ewens Ponds boast a number of freshwater aquatic plants and animals so divers can get a breathtaking view of the small fish species that live just beneath the water. The minimum qualification for divers is open water. You can come to Ewens Ponds for free.

Adam Lindsay Gordon of Dingley Dell Cottage Adam Lindsay Gordon was an Australian poet and his horsemanship is legendary. Lines of his poetry have gone into folklore. He is known as the first of the Australian poets, however his books were not particularly successful in his lifetime. He is the only Australian to have his bust in Westminster Abbey. He won three famous steeplechase races in Melbourne in one day and jumped his horse onto a small ledge around the Blue Lake. A monument was later built there. Adam was born in 1833, the son of Captain Adam Durnford Gordon and Harriet Gordon, both descendants of the famous Gordon family. He was sent away to boarding school at age 7 and attended military college when a teenager. Having a sensitive nature like his mother, he had no interest in anything military. He had a love of horses and won steeplechase events. Adam was headstrong, had debts and considered “wild”. His father was at a loss to help the young Gordon into a career, so arranged for him to come to Australia. Gordon, aged 20 arrived in Adelaide in 1853. He joined the South Australian mounted police and was stationed at Mount Gambier and Penola where he developed his love of the Australian bush. Two years later Gordon resigned and took up horse-breaking. He associated with Revered Julian Tenison Woods, who lent him books and discussed poetry. Wealthy pastoralist John Riddoch was also a friend. Gordon represented the district in Parliament for a time, but had no love for politics and left 18 months later. His reputation as a rider over hurdles grew. He often won, but also had bad accidents. In October 1862, he married young Margaret Park and two years later bought a small acreage with a cottage he named Dingley Dell. Gordon had a number of articles and poems published. One of his most famous poems “The Wreck” is about the desperate gallop

“Life is mostly froth and bubble, Two things stand like stone, Kindness in another’s trouble, Courage in your own.”

to summons help after the Admella was shipwrecked. It has the rollicking rythem of the galloping horse. A pastoral venture in Western Australia failed because his flock ate poison weed and an unsuccessful business partnership in Ballarat, saw them move to Melbourne. Gordon was now almost blind and had constant pain from his old injuries. He suffered all his life from depression and when his only child Annie died, aged 10 months, it almost broke his heart. He had debts and limited prospects for income and was endeavouring to prove he was heir to Esselmont Estate in Scotland. His new book Bush Ballads and Galloping Rhymes was just published with a wonderful review from fellow poet Kendall, but he had no money to pay the publishers. Next morning he rose early, walked to the tea tree scrub by the beach and shot himself. He was not yet 37. He was buried in the Brighten Cemetery. After the funeral, as friends gathered at his house to celebrate his life, a telegram arrived. It said Gordon’s inheritance had been approved. He was to receive £34,000, a fortune. What cruel irony! A few days earlier would have made all the difference. And his wife would received nothing, as it was only for male members of the family. Margaret later remarried and had 7 children. Friends and admirers collected subscriptions for a statue to Gordon which was unveiled in Melbourne in 1931. Dingley Dell Cottage is situated at Port MacDonnell.

Nelson

Where the River Meets the Sea

The small township of Nelson is fortunate to be set on the Glenelg River with the ocean on its doorstep too. Its just 4 kms to the South Australian border with Port MacDonnall some 30 kms away, the City of Mount Gambier about 60 kms, and Portland 70 kms north west. Nelson is well served with a hotel, general store, motel / roadhouse, two caravan parks, holiday houses and a visitor information centre. The river flows through the town centre with scenic parks, jetties and boat ramps along the river banks. There are scenic cruises along the river and canoes for hire. The Glenelg River has carved a spectacular limestone gorge with cliffs rising on both sides of the river up to 50 metres high. It flows through the heart of the Lower Glenelg National Park with its tranquil beauty, prolific birdlife and gum trees harbouring koalas. Wallabies, kangaroos and other animals live there too. You can enjoy a tour of Princess Margaret Rose Cave, an underground wonderland, set in the natural bushland. There’s riverside camping, fishing (license required), canoeing and kayaking. Permits for camping available from Princess Margaret Rose Caves – call (08) 8738 4171. As the Glenelg River heads south of Nelson’s town centre, it flows into Oxbow Lake which has an outlet into the Southern Ocean. There are sandy beaches along the lake shore and at the river mouth for sheltered swimming. Swimming is not advised at the ocean beach due to dangerous undertows in the open sea.
