I

t seems that this year Prachuab Khiri Khan is getting more rain than last year and other areas are having a serious drought. Let’s hope it turns to the best. What I don’t understand however is that when it rains in BKK where now over a quarter of million households are suffering from empty taps, streets are flooded when it rains. Traffic is blocked and in some sections you can only see the roof of the cars. I have been following Thai Visa closely but do not participate as have no confidence in the hacking experts. A guy send a friend of mine a bad email which was then tracked down to a proxy server in the USA, which does not mean it came from there. No IP number etc. A super hacker, evidently can trace it further down and CSI on True Visions can pin point it if you can wait until next season´s series. On soi 112 I never understood why you had to take a more than 2km detour before you could make a U turn . There is practically no way to come out of Thailand Resort and going towards the ByPass Highway without first heading 1.5 km towards Petchhkasem Road before making a U turn. The rumour has it that Peter Suay is again moving to Chiang Mai, only to return to Hua Hin after home sick symptoms and missing his pork chops at Zab Wer on 112. Low season or not, we shall overcome and focus of positive things to come like the Chinese tourist visitors, Koreans, Japanese and hopefully increasing number from Europe. Come and visit amazing Thailand and our sleepy town on the Gulf of Siam!

I just made a review at the only Batik shop and factory in greater Hua Hin. It was a fascinating experience. By the way I ended up having dinner at Sakura Sushi on Soi 94, a delightfull experience as well as I was set out to have an Australian steak but changed my mind….. actually for the better. Read more about the Batik Shop & Sakura Sushi further on, on page 10 and 53.

VANA NAVA Hua Hin Water Park presented

EXCLUSIVE FOOD MEDIA FAMILIARIZATION TRIP Featuring Thailand´s famous Iron Chef Chumpol Jangprai

Chef Chumpol Jangprai was literally born in the kitchen of his family’s renowned Thai restaurant “Sa Nguan See” since 1955 till today, on Bangkok’s 59/1 Wireless Road.

Seabass with a herb crust and extravagant creamy Safran sauce and a pyramid of black glutinous rice. Some of us, including myself crowned this plate as the best. The actual main course was king size Sea Prawn sided with Korat Wagyu beef filet served with potato wedges. Needless to praise this course as the succulent Thai Waygyu is in any way comparable with foreign imports. I would grade the presented Thai Wagyu as an A with a grade 3 point marbling.

Growing up in the restaurant, he started working full time in their kitchen at an age of 13 years. Chef Chumpol has been invited by The Proud Group and Vana Nava showcase a spectacular spread of authentic and traditional Thai delicacies at the Tree Top Lounge of the Vana Nava Water Hua Hin Park. Chef Chumpol prepared a line -up of exciting treats and exclusive mouth-watering dishes accompanied by sugary mocktails for the “Foodies” media of Bangkok and exclusive invitations for Hua Hin Today and APPROACH Magazine Hua Hin We were all very excited at this opportunity int meeting Chef Chumpol as you seldom meet a famous chef cooking food in front of you. Chef Chumpol explained all the dishes and the ingredients before cooking and serving the separate courses. As a starter, a spicy Croquette with a Tom Yam Gung filling really had it in it. Almost “Dutchy”, creamy and crusty on the outside. The Croquette was accompanied by a Melon Squash, just in case it was too spicy for me. This Mocktail was served and sponsored by the Monin Company. A Spaghetti Vongole with green pepper was served as a second starter. An itsy bitsy too spicy for me but nevertheless still delicious. The following cheesy seafood and curried flavoured Pizza was interesting. A crusty dough with tasty fresh tomato sauce, plenty of seafood served with a mango Caipirinha, missing the Pirinha… well, it was supposed to be a Mocktail anyway.

I had mine medium rare, it was juicy and could practically be cut with a fork. It was really Great tasting. The Sea Prawn and the veggies rounded this excellent serving off together with a passion fruit mojito mocktail. As a dessert, a combination of fresh durian and banana durian pastry pudding was bravely put on the tables. Once you got the taste of it, it was truly likable, sweet but still smelly for some of us. Summa Sumarum, a great display of A1 cooking by a great Chef in a great Water Jungle Park. A fantastic lunch in best company of Chef Chumpol, Vana Nava´s perfect table service, our lovely host Khun Gift of the Proud Real Estate Company, Monin Beverage Innovation and the entire Vana Nava F&B Team.

HUA HIN & BEYOND

Photograpy By Jack Piyapong Tel: 086 038 3293 Saranya-Studio

The Hua Hin Batik Shop has been in Hua Hin for more than 20 years.

Being one of the old arts of Asia and Africa, I wanted to have a closer view of this ancient art.

I

t all started with the daughter of the famous Khun Tak who at one time published the Hot Line newspaper. I knew Khun Tak personally and he was an outstanding personality in Hua Hin. Khun Aaw and her partner Khun Pom created a small shop and made batik cloths, later shirts and dresses in the old style and art of batik. They did well and saw that the time was coming to move and make a bigger shop.

So 15 years ago they moved to Petschkasem road practically opposite the Intercontinental Hotel and now next to Mike Tailor & Co. Khun Aaw being the designer took me into their “factory and explained the whole Batik process to me. As I had no clue what I was about to see, I was astonished at this artistic artwork. One look inside this wonderful shop gives you a clear idea of the work of this talented lady. Batik is a traditional art-form which involves using wax and dye to create beautiful and intricate patterns on cloth. The methods of traditional batik date back to Egypt, China, India, Indonesia and Japan. Historically, the island of Java in Indonesia is the centre of batik. Indonesian craftsman were taken to Europe by the Dutch in order to teach Dutch craftsmen how to colour these beautiful fabrics. The overall pattern is drawn on using a canting or traditional hand tool. It consists of a small copper container with a curved spout. This is mounted onto a piece of bamboo for convenience. 10

APPROACH August 2015

With this tool you are able to skilfully draw intricate images onto a cloth. The wax used in traditional batik is beeswax but paraffin wax works just as well. The fabric onto which you are drawing is normally white cotton or silk that is stretched onto a frame. The concept behind the art form is that the water-based dye will be absorbed by the cloth while the area with the smooth wax will not.

HUA HIN & BEYOND Once you’ve stretched your piece of fabric it’s time to design the image. Batik is a layered process, meaning that you first add wax to the parts which you want to have in the chosen original colour. Then you add on some die with a paintbrush. Once that dries you add wax to the parts that you want to remain the colour you just used. Then you repeat the process with another colour. You keep doing this until the entire fabric is covered with wax. When you reach this phase, all you have to do is scrape off all the wax and you’re left with a beautiful image. Men shirts in all thinkable colours , ladies blouses, skirts and dresses, saris, table cloth, bed & pillow covers, it is all there in the highest quality. They will also make any design you bring in, like your favourite pictures or in my case my VW Beetle. I will definitely draw up a nice design with Khun Aaaw and order a shirt. I would like to encourage residents and tourists to visit this heritage shop and admire the handcraft as it is one of the oldest arts of traditionally covering cotton and silk cloth with artisan images and colours. It was one of those experiences that you

miss if you don’t know about them, but they are present in our everyday life. Her Royal Majesty Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya is a frequent customer at the Batik Shop when she visits Hua Hin. We are lucky that there are still people that practice arts like these, away from modern cloth printing machines and photo images transfers on synthetics. Batik can only be produced on pure cotton, linen and silk.

Her concert appearances include countries such as Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia, Armenia, France and USA, to name a few. Dr. Thomas Lanners has appeared as a solo and collaborative pianist and clinician throughout the U.S. and abroad, presenting his New York solo debut in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in 2004. His performances have been broadcast nationally and internationally on programs such as American Public Media’s Performance Today and RTÉ Radio 1’s Sunday Miscellany in Ireland, among many others. He currently serves as Professor of Piano at Oklahoma State University. Prof. Hristo Kazakov was born 1974 in Sofia, Bulgaria. He had his first piano lessons at the age of four. He studied at the “Ljubomir Pipkov” Musical School graduating in 1992 with distinction. He was awarded the third prize at the National Chamber Music competition “Johannes Brahms“. seminars and teaching assignments on contemporary classical music. After earning his Master’s Degree from the National Music Academy, he got a scholarship to the Music Academy in Fontainebleau. In France, Hristo Kazakov participated in master classes with musicians like Philippe Entremont and Philippe Bianconi with special interest in the music of French impressionism. TRAVEL IN THAILAND

Isaan Province

Thailand is Asia’s primary travel destination and offers a host of places to visit. As soon as you leave the capital and bound westward or northward, you enter a total different and exciting countryside. We chose to present the Isaan province, the largest and nature wise most beautiful. Despite the influx of visitors, Thailand’s cultural integrity remains largely undamaged – a country that has been able to absorb Western influences while maintaining its own rich heritage. Around forty percent of Thais earn their living from farming, based around the staple rice, which forms the foundation of the country’s unique and famously sophisticated cuisine. For travellers and Thais alike, the northeast is Thailand’s forgotten backyard with its heritage cities, ruins and temples. Isaan as it’s called, offers a glimpse of the Thailand of old: rice fields run to the horizon, water buffalo wading in muddy ponds, silk weavers work looms under their homes and pedal-rickshaw drivers pull passengers down city streets. If you have a penchant for authentic experiences, it will surely be satisfied here. Bordered by Laos and Cambodia on three sides, Isaan includes a third of the country’s land area and is home to nearly a third of its population. As you’d expect, the landscape is mostly flat, but 14

APPROACH August 2015

there are plenty of lively festivals and ancient temples to make a visit worth the effort. Important archaeological sites such as the Angkorian temple ruins and pleasingly unsophisticated Wats, pepper the region amongst scenery untouched by modern progress. Colourful festivals and traditional handicrafts such as distinctive hand-woven silks are inherent to Isaan’s culture.

TRAVEL IN THAILAND

Isaan is devided into several regions Northern Isaan - The great Mekong Valley, the national parks of Loei, Ban Chiang, Nong Khai, Wat Phra That Phanom. Central Isaan - Also known as the Chi River Basin. Southern Isaan - Centred around bustling Nakhon Ratchasima, the Mun River Basin is home to Khao Yai National Park and the beautiful Khmer architecture of Phanom Rung and Phimai. Isaan’s prime destinations are its Khmer ruins and Khao Yai National Park. There are regular festivals that draw huge crowds and are great fun to attend. In May, Yasothon is the focus for the bawdy rocket festival. Beginning of July sees the equally raucous rainmaking festival of Phi Ta Kon in Dan Sai near Loei. - In July, Ubon Ratchathani hosts the extravagant candle festival In October, strange, pink fireballs float out of the Mekong near Nong Khai; while the flamboyant, though inevitably touristy, “elephant round-up” is staged in Surin in November. Spend even just a little time in this colossal corner of the country and you’ll discover as many differences as similarities to the rest of Thailand. The language, food and culture are more Lao than Thai, with hearty helpings of Khmer and Vietnamese thrown into the mix. It is a fascinating home to some of Thailand’s best historic sites, national parks and festivals. Although English is rarely spoken, the fantastic attractions and daily interactions will end up being highlights of your entire trip.

to the average earnings in Isaan, tourists are wealthy and can probably afford a few extra baht for a tuk tuk or a rickshaw ride. Worrying about the weather ? North east Thailand is monsoonal, cool in the dry months of December and January, getting hot and humid in February, March and April, the very wet and tropical during May, June, July and August. Temperatures during the dry can be mid to high 20’s c. during the day and as low as 10 c. or 12 c. over night. For much of the rest of the year expect low to mid 30’s c. and high humidity .However aren´t we here to escape the cold long winters in Europe or the States? There are several ways to go to Isaan from Bangkok or elsewhere in Thailand By plane : The cities of Khon Kaen, Nakhon Phanom, Sakon Nakhon, Ubon Ratchathani and Udon Thani can be reached by plane from Bangkok. Minibus service (tickets available in the arrivals hall - 200 Baht) will bring you straight to your hotel if you ask the driver. By bus: Frequent bus services go everywhere in Isaan, make sure you pick the right one or you may end up in Vietnam or Laos. By train: Regular train services connect Bangkok with Ubon Ratchathani and Nong Khai Get around: Depending on where you’re coming from and where you want to get to, buses, minibuses, songthaews, motorbikes, and bicycles are all good ways to get around. And walk! Bon Voyage!

We learned a lot about the local residents by staying at one of the family-run guesthouses and homestays in the southern part of the region where hospitality is written in uppercase and bold. Hoewever keep a small tip in mind; Many Isaan people are poor and the temptation to overcharge tourists is common as the perception is that ‘falang’ are wealthy. Compared

SKAL INTERNATIONAL THAILAND AGAINST PHUKET’S DOLPHINARIUM The Nemo Dolphinarium in Phuket

Skal International Phuket & Southern Thailand’s executive committee and all of the SKAL members across Thailand protest against the opening of a dolphinarium in Phuket and call on all SKAL and non-Skal members from any industries to join our protest against this project. SKAL International Phuket & Southern Thailand strongly believes that seeing dolphins in captivity can be mis-educational, with educational messages taking second place to entertainment in circus-style performances and up-close encounters, where visitors’ desire for interaction appears to override any educational benefit but more for commercial purposes. “Dolphins are highly intelligent, free-ranging carnivores who suffer greatly from the effects of confinement and as a result suffer from stress, breeding problems and premature death as well as behavioural problems that can result in aggression between themselves and towards humans.” “The concept of opening a dolphinarium in Phuket received much criticism, by island residents and by world-famous environmentalists groups such as Sea Shepherd. In an open letter to the “Phuket Tourism Board” (presumably the Tourism Authority of Thailand) and the Fisheries Department, Sea Shepherd asserted that some of the dolphins bound for the Nemo dolphinarium are coming from Ukraine, but were originally captured off the Japanese fishing village of Taiji, site of an infamous annual slaughter of dolphins at the Cove” Extract from The Phuket News: “An official from the Department of Fisheries who did not want to be named told The Phuket News, “We received notification from a company named Phuket Aqua about the dolphinarium in June 2014. “They told us the building was completed late last year. However, after inspecting it our committee did not pass for it approval and changes were needed. ” Read the complete article at: www.thephuketnews.com For a staggering six months of every year - September 1st until March - a group of dolphin hunters herd wild dolphins from the ocean’s open waters into a hidden shallow bay, now infamously known around the world as the Cove. The hunters capture entire families or pods, of various species of dolphins at a time in order to satisfy the international demand for captive dolphins in the entertainment industry. Those taken captive are sent to aquariums and marine parks worldwide. The remaining dolphins are killed by a hunting technique known as “pithing,” which leaves the still conscious dolphins paralyzed and often drowning in the blood of their own family members.

agerstroemia is a member of the Lythraceae family, which are also known as the loosestrife family. A genus of around 50 species of deciduous and evergreen trees or shrubs. Young twigs are usually square. The simple leaves are opposite depending on the type, or alternate, stalked or sessile. The leaf margins are smooth. The stipules are usually small. The terminal inflorescences are grapey or cymose (Cymose Inflorescence; the terminal bud becomes a flower; and since no further elongation can occur, theoretically the growth of the inflorescence is predetermined) The hermaphrodite, sixfold flowers are mostly radial symmetric, only the stamens are acyclic. The flower cup is funnel-shaped. A double perianth is constructed. ( The perianth (sometimes called perigonium or perigon) is the non-reproductive part of the flower, and structure that forms an envelope surrounding the sexual organs, consisting of the calyx (sepals) and the corolla (petals ) Normally, six overgrown sepals are present. There are usually many (50 to 100), rare six to twelve, acyclic arranged fertile stamens present. 28

Three to six carpels are fused to an upper ovary; with a stylus, with a capitate stigma. Purple or carmine fragrant flowers with crimped petals, grow in panicles up to 9cm long, and appear from summer to autumn amongst dark green leaves which emerge bronze before changing to yellow and orange in autumn. The peeling, mottled, smooth, gray-brown bark is most attractive, being a prominent feature as it peels off each year.

THAI NATURE

Pollination is done by insects (Entomophilie). There are formed capsule fruits containing winged seeds. In their respective climates, both subtropical and tropical species are common in domestic and commercial landscapes. The timber of some species has been used to manufacture bridges, furniture, and railway sleepers, but in Vietnam’s Cat Tien National Park, the dominant stands of Lagerstroemia in secondary forest are thought to have survived (after episodes of logging) due to the low quality of wood. Lagerstroemia species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidptera (moth and butterfly) species including Endoclita malabaricus.

Gagnepain (native to Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand) It is used as an ornamental plant in the Mediterranean region and can also be used as a container plant. These flowering trees are beautifully colored and are often planted both privately and commercially. The common crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica) from China was introduced circa 1790 to Charleston, South Carolina in the United States by the French botanist Andre Michaux. In the wild, the species is most often found as a multistemmed large shrub, but 200 years of cultivation have resulted in a huge number of cultivars of widely varying characteristics. Today, crape myrtle varieties can fill every landscape need, from tidy street trees to dense barrier hedges to fast-growing dwarf types of less than two feet, which can go from seed to bloom in a season (allowing gardeners in places where the plant is not winter-hardy to still enjoy the intense colours of the frilly flowers).

Systematics The genus Lagerstroemia was set up in 1759 by Carl Linnaeus. He named the genus after his friend, Swede Magnus LagerstrĂśm (1691-1769), which was director of the Swedish East India Company and supplied Linnaeus with plant material.

Utilization The leaves of Lagerstroemia parviflora are fed on by the Antheraea paphia moth which produces the tassar silk (Tussah), a form of wild silk of commercial importance in India.

Several species and varieties, mainly because of their blossoms, are cultured as ornamental plants. Especially from the Chinese Lagerstoemia (Lagerstroemia indica) many forms have been bred.

Distribution The species of the genus are native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Australia. Heading north, the distribution area reaches up to Japan. About 50 species are recorded, out of which 15 species (eight endemic) in China. In addition to the species cultivated in China, the following have also been recorded as cultivated: Lagerstroemia siamica August 2015 APPROACH

FINANCIAL

G

reece owes European countries and international bodies €340 billion borrowed over the past five years.

• To afford the debt repayments, Greece made huge cuts leaving many impoverished. • In February, a fed-up population elected the left-wing Syriza party. • As Greece lagged on repayments, they were told to make more cuts, or lose aid. Syriza refused • The big problem now is Greek banks are running out of money. If they do, Greece will have to start printing its own currency – the drachma - and drop out of the euro.

Recent history In the 1990s Greece consistently ran significant budget deficits while using the Drachma. As a result of this economic mismanagement it joined the Euro in 2001, rather than 1999 like many other EU nations. Shortly after joining the single currency, Greece enjoyed a period of growth (2001-2007). However, economist and analysts have retrospectively labelled this boom as “unsustainable,” pointing out that Greece (very broadly speaking) profited off the cheap loans available from the EU. Like many other countries in the EU Greece was seriously affected with the financial crash of 2008, and was unable to climb out of the hole as it had in the past by printing more currency (thus boosting the economy) as the Euro was controlled by the European Central Bank (ECB). Unemployment spiralled to 28 per cent. In 2010, the Troika (ECB, the International Monetary Fund and the European Commission) started handing Greece loans in exchange for spending cuts and tax hikes. This did not go down well in Greece although the economy did pick up. A second later bailout brought the total amount given to Greece roughly £169 billion. 32

APPROACH August 2015

Explaining The Greek Financial Crisis Following the election of Mr Tsipras’s party Syrizia, the Greek government has been engaged in torturous talks with EU leaders over a number of issues, including: pensions, labour market reforms, the civil service and the budget surplus. But what about the Greek elite? Are there any wealthy Greeks that could have helped out? While there are only two Greek billionaires on Forbes’ billionaires list this year, there several Greek millionaire families that have made fortune in the shipping, metal and finance industries.

Just to name a few. Most have abandoned any help as they feel not responsible for the economic mismanagement and corruption of the country´s economy. Most of their cash fortune is safely deposited on tax free havens such as the Bermudas and Antilles, out of reach of any government move or sudden “tax resolution”.

MONEY AFFAIRS

Keep it Simple By Jerry McMenamin

I

have met people with substantial financial assets who are really ignorant of what their investment portfolios contain and what risk their investments entail. There is really no excuse for this unless you have too much money and can’t be bothered to spend time understanding the risks and potential return of your holdings.

Investing is really simple. Every investment falls into one of three categories; secure, balanced or speculative. So the next time you are presented with an investment opportunity ask yourself into which of these categories does it fall? If you get an e-mail from Nigeria promising you millions of dollars in return for your bank account details you know this is a high risk no-go investment. An equity fund in India which has averaged 40% each year over the past few years is also a speculative fund but has potential do the same again.

expect from their investments the chances are they will tell you they want very high returns with little or no risk. If I tell them at outset that this is an impossible dream they are less likely to be disappointed when their speculative investment falls, or their conservative one underperforms. For every 1 or 2 per cent gain above deposit rates there is a corresponding rise in risk. And most important of all and the first question any sensible investor should ask is what sort of consumer protection do I get. If you hold the safest asset in the world ant the company holding it goes bankrupt where do I stand? Please take professional advice and sleep well. It’s that simple. thailandexpatfinance@yahoo.com

A balanced investment is less likely to fluctuate wildly up and down. A good example is Corporate Bonds. These are debt instruments issued by blue chip companies which pay a return higher than bank interest rates. The higher the return above bank base rates the higher the risk. A secure investment is generally regarded as a no risk one. Bank accounts, especially when guaranteed by the Government and all types of deposit investments fall into this category. Property which you have owned for a long time in a first world country, may also fall in here. The key to contented investing is to match your individual risk profile with what is available. If you ask most p e o p l e what they

THAI LEGAL

BEHAVING IN THAILAND Tips

Thailand is an amazing country to visit - it can also be a nightmare if you fall on the wrong side of the law - imprisonment, and other worse situations that can really ruin your holiday, not to mention your life. Travellers should not have a tendency to do things they normally wouldn’t do at home. This sometimes can involve breaking a Thai law and most likely get you into a lot of unwanted trouble. Defacing images of the King or The Royal Family This is a very important Thai law for tourists - don’t defile any image of the Thai King. You can be arrested and sent to jail. This includes defacing Thai money - whatever you do, don’t step on any Baht - it’s against the law, and you could be arrested. This could be a very difficult thing to explain when you return home. Do not make any negative comments about the King or the Royal Family. This may lead to “Lesse Majeste” which is punishable with a jail sentence up to 6 years.

Alcohol Consumption The drinking age in Thailand is 20. It is in the interest of bar owners to enforce this as establishments do occasionally get raided for underage drinkers and patrons under the influence of illegal substances. This doesn’t mean you can’t buy alcohol if you are underage. Many people do, but we heavily advise you against it - again, it can result in jail if the police catches you. Drinking alcohol is illegal in the following locations in Thailand. Don’t drink in: Temples or places of worship – Pharmacies - Public offices - Education institutions - Petrol stations – Hospitals and Public parks.

Overstaying your visa & possible consequences If you overstay your visa you can actually be detained at the immigration detention centre. If however you make it to the airport, you simply pay your overstay fine and off you go. Rather be safe than sorry, so make sure your visa in in order. Your visa can be extended for a week for a small fee if you report to the local immigration office before it is expired.

Thailand Drug Laws It doesn’t get more obvious than the following statement taken from the Customs Department of the Kingdom of Thailand Website: “Violators of laws related to illicit drugs, e.g., having and holding for use, or being a producer, seller, or transporter are subject to the death sentence.” The police doesn’t give a damn if you say you didn’t inhale, you will be in serious trouble if caught. Thai prisons are not like their comfortable Norwegian counterparts. You won’t be having a good time inside. Don’t be stupid in Thailand: Don’t buy, use or transport drugs in any manner during your stay in Thailand. 34

APPROACH August 2015

This one for the road : The Underwear Law Who are we to judge, but technically it is illegal to leave your house in Thailand if you are not wearing underwear. Although we haven’t had any stories of Nomads being arrested for this offence, do like your good Mother said and always leave the house wearing a fresh pair of undies.

Heartburn Symptoms of Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is such a common problem you’d think it would be simple to spot and treat. Chest pain Chest pain, which occurs because stomach acid is splashing into the esophagus (Food pipe/ throat), is a classic acid reflux symptom. But the pain can last longer and be more intense than expected. Many people mistake heartburn for a heart attack. You can never ignore chest pain, especially if it gets worse when you exercise or exert yourself. If you’re having consisting chest pain, check with your doctor to make sure you’re not having a heart attack.

Pain worsens at rest The acid that is supposed to stay in your stomach is more likely to escape into your throat when you lie down or bend over, causing heartburn. 38

APPROACH August 2015

“If you’re sitting up straight, gravity helps keep food in the stomach,” “If you lose the gravity, you’re more prone to reflux.” That’s why people with chronic heartburn raise the head of their bed, and why they shouldn’t eat big meals right before bedtime.

Post-meal pain Pain that sets in right after a meal—especially a big meal— often means the stomach is overloaded and its contents have nowhere to go but up. But you may be able to prevent this without taking medication. Do not eat big, fatty meals and watch your intake of alcohol and tobacco!

HEATH & WELLNESS

Bitter taste Sometimes acid escaping from your stomach can make its way into the back of your throat, leaving an icky, bitter taste in your mouth. In really extreme cases, this can cause choking. If you wake up choking at night, you should see a doctor. Usually acid-suppressing medications like proton pump inhibitors, H2 blockers and antacids are recommended. You might think you’re in the early stages of a cold when your voice starts cracking, but hoarseness can be another heartburn symptom. If stomach acid is seeping into your throat it can irritate your vocal cords. Pay attention to when your voice sounds more husky than usual. If it’s after you’ve eaten, you may have reflux.

Touble swallowing Over time, the continuous cycle of damage and healing after acid reflux causes scarring. This, in turn, causes swelling in the lower-throat tissue, resulting in a narrowing of the throat and difficulty swallowing. But don’t assume that taking medication means you can eat whatever you want, whenever you want. Numerous indiscretions—overloading on fatty or fried foods, say— can trigger breakthrough symptoms. So downing a huge meal, eating late at night or hitting the sack shortly after a meal can be detrimental to your condition.

Nausea

Although it sounds counterintuitive, you need some acid. Stomach acid plays a key role in sanitizing the digestive tract and in killing off the bacteria that produce nitrosamines a chemical compound that has been associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer. So a little stomach acid is good; too much, however, can be painful.

Nausea is associated with so many things that it can be hard to attribute it to reflux. In some people, the only manifestation they have of reflux is nausea. If you have nausea and can’t figure out why, one of the things to think about is reflux.” And if the nausea tends to come on right after meals, that’s even more of an indication that it might be acid reflux. If so, a regular antacid treatment such as an over-the-counter acidcountering medicine could cut down on your discomfort. August 2015 APPROACH

The Stella Lux - Sun powered family car by Dutch University Students

Dutch students have developed a new family car that is not only powered by the sun, but generates more energy than it uses. Stella Lux seats up to four people and is designed to be efficient, intelligent and comfortable. It will compete in the World Solar Challenge in Australia later this year. TOYOTA VIGO

new vehicle from the ground-up, featuring an updated ladder-frame platform, new design, premium interior, and a new range of engines. The new ‘GD’ diesel engine family packs a 2.4-liter fourcylinder mill delivering 150 hp/343 Nm of torque, and a more powerful 2.8-liter diesel engine in two power states: 177 hp/420 Nm and 177 hp/450 Nm of torque. The sole petrol offering is the 2.7-liter four-cylinder VVT-i petrol engine delivering 122 hp and 245 Nm of torque.

CHEVROLET TRAILBLAZER

Stella Lux was developed by Solar Team Eindhoven (STE), a group of 21 students from different faculties of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). The students each put their studies on hold for a year and a half in order to work on the project, the aim of which is to create “the car of the future.” Stella Lux generates electricity via 5.8 sq m (62.4 sq ft) of solar cells and has an additional battery capacity of 15 kWh. A full charge provides a range of over 1,000 km (621 mi) in the Dutch climate or 1,100 km (684 mi) in the Australian climate, and the car has a top speed of 125 km/h (78 mph). Stella Lux will take part in the Cruiser Class of the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in Australia this October. The challenge itself is a 3,000 km (1,864 mi)-long race from Darwin to Adelaide, with the Cruiser Class involving an additional focus on comfort, practicality and “realizability”.

Chevrolet Trailblazer In February, 2015 General Motors announced that it will bring the Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV to India this year. Ford is gearing up to usher in the next-generation Endeavour here by the end of 2015. Toyota is expected to debut the 2016 Fortuner SUV at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo. These enthusiastic plans despite the mixed sentiments in the industry allows us to comprehend just how important SUVs are - not only for buyers, but also for manufacturers.

It has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, London since 1877. It is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the others being the Australian Open, the French Open and the US Open. Wimbledon is the only major still played on grass, the fastest type of tennis court which support a fast server. The tournament takes place over two weeks in late June and early July. Wimbledon traditions include a strict dress code for competitors and the eating of strawberries and cream by the spectators, and Royal patronage. The inaugural 1877 Wimbledon Championship opened on 9 July 1877. The Gentlemen’s Singles was the only event held and was won by Spencer Gore, an old Harrovian rackets player, from a field of 22. About 200 spectators paid one shilling each to watch the final.

This year´s tournament was exciting with a slightly changed, more aggressive, faster tennis. With a lot of youngsters, especially from our eastern regions, competition to the established top 10 was tremendous which proved itself in the defeat of several to players by new comers who had little to lose.

FOOD REVIEW

Sakura Sushi Hua Hin

T

he owner Khun Wat, initially had no intention to start a Japanese restaurant, but a two year educative job in a leading Chicago Japanese restaurant together with his wife twisted his mind upon his return to Hua Hin. With Soi 94 rapidly growing into a culinary street with a choice of international cuisine, it did not take Khun Wat long to decide, build and open his Sakura Sushi Restaurant. The first stage was a humble 4 x 8 meters unit about 7 years ago. The cooking was done by himself and his wife and two waitresses. Sooner than expected, he was driven to enlarge Sakura to its present double size. Once you enter the Sakura restaurant you are greeted by their friendly hospitality. That big smile from the waitresses irrevocably sit you down on own-designed “moon wood” furniture. Not being the greatest fan or expert on earth of Japanese food I was pleasently surprised, and with the friendly intervention of Khun Wat himself, a menu was put together. As an entrée, a shrimp cocktail was served smartly covered with a home-made cocktail sauce resting on a darker sauce of which the composition would not be disclosed by Khun Wat. It was delicious. Khun Wat makes his own sauces early ever morning, without any other kitchen staff present, as the formulas will remain his secret.

Authentic Japanese Food in Soi 94 This month I was invited to make a food review at Sakura Sushi on Soi 94. As a second serving a slightly seared tuna filet embedded in a different sauce with a total different taste as the first dark sauce. A small bowl of a creamy Wasabi and other spices was the dip for the tuna. Again, very classy tasting and attractively served. Now it was time for the Sumo, a large Sushi family delicacy filled with shrimp, cheese, vegetables and other again undisclosed but great tasting ingredients. My accompanying table lady, Selina, chose a Salmon Teriyaki filet with one of Khun Wat’s special sauce which was fantastic and cooked to perfection. A selection of Sushi was shared among us in between main servings. I was really taken by this authentic meal. The food was prepared freshly, served with a smile and tasted deliciously as if prepared for the Japanese Emperor. It would take several pages more to describe the variety of original Japanese food served at the Sakura Sushi . The prices are very reasonable indeed, taking into consideration that the quality is superb. APPROACH can highly and warmly recommend Sakura Sushi.

Beat The Heat with Hot Beauty Tips 3 Cosmetic Tips for Hot Days With rising temperatures this year, pare down your makeup routines to the essentials: mascara, concealer and tinted lip balm. A full face of makeup just doesn’t hold up when it’s hot and sticky outside. During the summer months, you can’t go wrong with wearing little-to-no makeup, but it does get tricky when choosing formulas and products that can withstand heat, humidity and even sweat. Here are a couple of tips for the hot days:

Invest in waterproof makeup - Makeup has come a long way since the liners, lipsticks and mascaras from the ‘80s. Thanks to cosmetics companies like Stila, Kevyn Aucoin and Bobbi Brown, consumers have access to a wider range of products that truly stay put where you put them, without clogging your pores. Avoid Powders - Powder will clump and avoid your pores from breathing. Your skin is extra hydrated in the summer

and you will naturally sweat more, so that’s why creams are hands-down the best option. Unlike matte powders, which sink into the fine lines and creases of your face, cream-based eyeshadow, blush and foundation glide on smoothly and help to create dewy, naturally flushed or bronzed effects.

Don´t wear thick facial creams - “Never use a thick cream in the summer as this will make your makeup slide right off your face. Use something lighter and make sure to let it absorb before applying your makeup for the day.

School Bullying Part II

Being bullied by a teacher?

WHEN THE TEACHER IS THE BULLY

T

he majority of teachers your child will encounter are good at what they do. In fact, many teachers go beyond the call of duty and are very altruistic. However, there are teachers who do not handle their responsibilities well and some teachers even bully their students. Instead of using proper discipline procedures or effective classroom management techniques, they use their power as a teacher to condemn, manipulate or ridicule students. When the bullying is physical, most parents don’t hesitate to report incidents, but when the bullying is emotional or verbal they often aren’t sure how to proceed. One concern is that teachers will retaliate and make things worse for their child. While this is a valid concern, it’s never a good idea to ignore the situation. Here are some ideas for addressing bullying by a teacher. Be sure to document all bullying incidents. Keep a record of everything that happens including dates, times, witnesses, actions and consequences. For instance, if the teacher berates your child in front of the class be sure to write it down including the date, the approximate time, what was said and which students were present. If other students participate in the bullying as a result of the teacher’s actions be sure to include that information too. If there is any physical bullying, cyberbullying or harassment based on race or disability, report this to your local police immediately. Depending on the area where you live, these forms of bullying are often crimes. 58

APPROACH August 2015

Reassure and support your child. Be sure to keep an open dialogue with your child about school and what is taking place. Remember your first priority is that you get help for your child. Don’t hesitate to connect with a counsellor and be sure to have your child evaluated by a paediatrician who can check for signs of depression, anxiety issues and sleep problems. Make sure you keep a close watch for signs of bullying and remember that kids often don’t report bullying behaviour. Take steps to build your child’s self-esteem. Help your child to see his strengths. Also encourage him to focus on things other than the bullying like favourite activities or

KIDS & EDUCATION if you take a cooperative approach when discussing the situation. Try to keep an open mind and listen to the teacher’s perspective. Avoid screaming, accusing, blaming and threatening to sue.

new hobbies. Don’t spend too much time talking about the bullying. Doing so keeps your child focused on the negative thing in their life. Instead, help him move beyond it and see that there are other things in life to be happy about. This will help build resilience. Talk with your child before taking steps to resolve the issue. It’s never a good idea to have a meeting with a teacher or principal without telling your child. You run the risk of embarrassing your child if he finds out about the situation after the fact. Additionally, your child will need to be prepared emotionally if the meeting does not go well and the teacher retaliates.

Follow the chain of command. Remember, the closer someone is to the problem, the more likely he will be able to take swift, effective action. If you go straight to the top, you will most likely be asked whom you have talked to about the situation and what have you done to remedy the situation. You want to be sure you have exhausted all possibilities for resolving this issue at the lower levels before moving higher. Additionally, if you have documentation from your interactions at lower levels, it will be hard to ignore what you have to say when you do get to the top.

Be sure to express your concerns but allow others to engage in the conversation. For instance, if your child seems to be afraid in class, mention this. Then ask the teacher what she thinks may be going on. This allows the teacher to talk about what she sees. Additionally, it’s less likely she will get defensive if you are open to hearing her perspective. Take your complaint higher if the situation doesn’t improve or the bullying is severe in nature. Sometimes teachers will rationalize their behaviour, blame the student or refuse to admit any wrongdoing. Other times the bullying is much too severe to risk speaking with a teacher directly. If this is the case, ask to meet with the principal in person. Be sure to share your documentation. You also could request a classroom transfer at this point. Not all principals will honour such requests, but some do. Continue to go up the chain of command if you don’t get results. Unfortunately, some principals will let teachers who bully go unchallenged or deny that bullying is taking place. If this is the case, it’s time to file a formal complaint with superintendent or the school board, demanding a response. Be sure to keep good records of all your communications including e-mails, letters and documentation of telephone calls. Don’t let the bullying drag on indefinitely. If the principal, superintendent or school board drags their feet in responding to you, then it may be time to get legal counsel. In the meantime, you also may want to investigate other options for your child like a transfer to another school, private school, home schooling or online programs. Leaving your child in a bullying situation can have dire consequences. Be sure you make every effort to either end the bullying or remove your child from the situation. Don’t assume the bullying will end without intervention.

Consider requesting a meeting with the teacher. Depending on the severity and frequency of the bullying, it may be wise to go directly to the person doing the bullying first. Many times a teacher meeting will resolve the problem
