HUA HIN & BEYOND

Kui Buri National Park

Reforestation Event The Blúport Hua Hin Resort Mall organized a Reforestation Event, on September the 6th , in honour of His Majesty King Bhumipol´s 70th year of Reign. The event was initiated and led by Bluport´s management, Khun Kritsana Impuch and Khun Pasu Liptapanlop & Team, inviting local media to join in for a day at the park.

E

stablished in 1999 Kui Buri National Park is located in the Tenasserim Hills in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. The forests consists of dry- and moist evergreen forests with trees such as Dipterocarpus tuberculatus, Hopea odorata, Terminalia Chebula and different species of Palms.

However, deforestation and hunting has ruined parts of this wonderful sanctuary and mammal life. The Blúport Hua Hin Resort Mall took the initiative to step in and draw public attention to a reforestation plan, starting in Kui Buri as an example to the population and visitors of Thailand to save our forests and wildlife. The national park is home to one of biggest population of Bisons, also called Gaur, in entire Thailand with estimated around 100 individuals and around 320 Elephants and probably the best spot in entire Thailand to easily see few species thanks to the easily accessible open areas. Wild mammals such as Bisons, Elephants, Golden Jackals, Leopards, Deer, Bantengs and Langurs are common in the national park. Some of the common birds that can be found in Kui Buri are the Crested Fireback, Indian roller, Asian Openbill. We were taken to the Park in a Bluport Minivan and after an introductory ceremony at which the Prachuab deputy governor spoke, we mounted open pick-ups to the higher located plains overlooking an unbelievable beautiful valley and grazing grounds for the Elephants and Bisons. The main objective of the event was to plant seeds in order to create more forest, especially in the areas where deforestation had taken its toll. When forests are cleared, they emit CO2 back into the atmosphere and put humanity on a dangerous collision course with the worst of climate change. Deforestation accounts for about 11% of global greenhouse gas emissions caused by humans — comparable to the emissions from

HUA HIN & BEYOND all of the cars and trucks on Earth combined. As a result, animal species are in danger of extinction, tree species lose important seed dispersal, and local people lose an important supply of protein. Armed with catapults, all of us shot seed into a grazing valley where the Elephants and Bisons would trample the seeds into the ground and soon with a little help of the monsoon rain, trees will start to grow. The trip was very successful and APPROACH will keep promoting re-naturalization efforts of Thai nature and wildlife.

Kuri Buri has a campsite with a visitor centre and basic facilities. Tents are available for rent at the visitor centre from 270B a night including accessories. There is one 3 bed room bungalow with 2 toilets for 1800 Baht per night. Your own tent is allowed for 30 Baht per night. The entrance fees are 200 THB (children 100 Baht and 30 Baht for cars. Hua Hin Sam Phan Nam Floating Market

Swiss Sheep Farm - Especially for kids

Most of the places you will see on the Hua Hin tourist brochures are at least 1-3 hours away from the city, such as caves and floating markets. However, just a few minutes before Cha Am, coming from Bangkok, there is a water park called Santorini and opposite to it, the Swiss Sheep Farm. It is as the name suggests a European-style farm with horses, sheep, mules, windmills and a beautiful backdrop. There are open fields, small wooden bridges, train rides and fun games like darts and target shootings etc. The Swiss Sheep Farm is on Petchkasem road (highway #4) at kilometre 201, on the left side of the road when coming from Bangkok, just before the PTT gas station and 500 meters before the fork to Cha-am and Hua Hin on the left (straight being the bypass to Pranburi). Open every day from 10am to 7pm. Admission fee 50 baht for adults, 30 baht for children.

Hua Hin Sam Phan Nam Floating Market covers an area of over 100 rai (16 hectares). The market’s architectural features take their inspiration from several historical sites in Hua Hin that were either built or renovated during the reign of King Rama VI (1910-1925), including the Mrigadayavan Palace and Hua Hin Railway Station. At Sam Phan Nam Floating Market, you will find about 200 different shops selling local food, hand made products and souvenirs. Stroll through the heart of the floating market on foot or by boat, or even a take a pedalo on the water. You can go around the floating market on a miniature railway. Location: On Soi Hua Hin 112 about 4.5 kilometres from Petschkasen road. Sign will indicate where to turn left. Daily from 10:00 am. – 11:00 pm

Hua Hin Night Bazaar, Hua Hin

In the evening, Hua Hin Night Bazaar fills the street with clothing, crafts, music, movies, cosmetics, food, and anything else you can think of for low prices. Counterfeit brands mix with hand-crafted goods, so don’t be surprised to see fake Chanel handbags for sale. In fact, many travellers visit this attraction solely for the knock-offs. Don’t forget to bargain, as many vendors hike up a price as soon as they see a tourist. If you get hungry, try one of the seafood restaurants along the way or opt for inexpensive street food instead. Plan to see Hua Hin Night Bazaar and other attractions that appeal to you using our Hua Hin vacation route planner. October 2016 APPROACH

Budget Accommodation - Between 250 to 500 Baht per night. The latter price includes air-conditioning.

in Thailand to list here. Thailand is jam-packed with great backpacking highlights, many of which you can find on your own, with no help of the guidebook. You just have to really dig to find them! Bangkok - The hustle and bustle of the most vibrant city in Asia will force you to love it or hate it. Bangkok is the perfect first step (or plunge) into the world of Southeast Asia.

Food - There are still amazing deals to be had while backpacking through Thailand. You can usually find tasty Pad Thai, Massaman curry or spring rolls to fill your stomach for just over 35 Baht. A cold beer will most likely be part of your budget while backpacking Thailand. There are ways to save some serious baht for those on a shoestring budget. You can buy big beers at 7/11 stores for around 55 THB. Must-See Places in Thailand - There are far too many “must-see” places 18

APPROACH October 2016

Go on a cycle tour, visit Chinatown, check out famous temples, explore the

Chatuchak Market…and so much more. If you decide to travel to the North West of Thailand, Chiang Mai is your target: This ancient walled city has plenty to offer backpackers. Cheap accommodation, Local markets, delicious restaurants and lots to keep you busy. Trips into the hills of Thailand with the highest peak, the Doi Inthanon (2,565 m – 8,415 ft) about 1 hour drive from Chiang Mai. Tour agencies that can arrange visits to the Thai Lanna and Burmese Long Neck Tribes. Trips to the Mae Sa Waterfall and driving the Mae Hon Song Loop are popular excursions in the area. Plenty of nature, plenty hills. Thailand’s hippy hangout Pai. A beautiful little village set on the Pai River in the Mae Hong Song province. You can arrange jungle treks and river trips here as well as visits to the stunning Pai Canyon, Santichon (Chinese village) and tours to the infamous Bridge Over The River Kwai.

TRAVEL IN THAILAND Travelling South of Bangkok, the towns of Cha Am & Hua Hin are sleepy tourist destinations with sandy beaches and budget hostels. See event there in our special section Around Town The Islands: Along the Gulf Coast going South Krabi - is only accessible by boat so it retains an island-like vibe. Railay is breathtaking. Huge limestone cliffs jut out of shimmering turquoise waters. Here you can do some rock climbing, jungle treks, hikes or just float in the warm sea and look up at the massive, jagged Goliaths that soar above the white sand coves. These shores include some of Thailand’s most beautiful beaches. Koh Phangan - If you want to experience one of Thailand’s most dazzling specs in the sea, then you should come to Koh Phangan outside of the optimal lunar cycle.

On the East Gulf Coast Koh Chang and Koh Kood - Koh Samet - Stunning places which are deserted outside of peak seasons. Long white sand beaches fringe their shores, with a wide variety of accommodation. Everything from cheap huts to stunning resorts.

Phones are also cheap in Thailand and handy to have. Pick up a SIM card for a few bucks. Phone calls are also very cheap. You can use a cell phone to book rooms. The best time to visit Thailand is generally during the cooler, dryer months from November to around MidFebruary. During the summer months from June to August, the temperatures get pretty high – over 35 C. But then again….Tasty food, stunning beaches, great diving and snorkelling, smiling locals and stunning temples. Pack your bags and head to Thailand. It’ll probably be a place you return to a dozen times. Oh, and don’t forget your sunscreen! However don’t travel without Peptol Bismol for upset stomachs and Tylenol for hangover headaches.

and…. Don’t leave home without travel insurance. There are good roads connecting all of the best beaches so renting a motorbike and touring the island is easy. it’s possibly the coolest place in the country. Koh Tao - What an incredible island. Koh Tao (meaning “Turtle Island”) is Thailand’s scuba diving mecca. The diving here is world-class, but it’s the vibe that really makes Koh Tao what it is. Funky beach bars, tasty restaurants, street stalls, sandy (but mostly unswimmable) beaches, movie nights and great diving and snorkelling. Koh Phi Phi - These islands are stunning. If you want to see a beautiful beach, snorkel some nice reefs and see the place where the movie “The Beach” was filmed, then Koh Phi Phi is worth a visit. Keep in mind that prices here are jacked up in comparison to the rest of Thailand.

Moving around: By far the best way to get around in Thailand is on a motorbike or moped. They can be rented just about everywhere for as little as $3 and they will give you a lot of freedom that buses and Tuk-Tuks lack. If you’ve never ridden one before, don’t worry, it’s like riding a bike. Just take a spin around the block a couple of times to get used to it and you’ll be fine. Despite a constant increase in pricing, Thailand is still a very cheap place to visit. There’s a lot to do and almost everything can fall inside of a backpacker’s budget. No matter what kind of traveller you are, there’s something for everyone in Thailand and there’s a little bit of everyone to share it with. You can still find a little piece of paradise all to yourself in Thailand Internet is everywhere in Thailand. October 2016 APPROACH

LE STRESS CHEZ LES ENFANTS By Florent Ducret

THAI NATURE

The

Betel palm Areca catechu

By Dr. George F. Grossniklaus

The Areca ( ), betel palm, also called Katechupalm or Arekapalm, is a species of the palm family (Arecaceae). Together with about 60 other species of the genus Areca, it is widespread in the IndoMalayan region.

Characteristics A catechu forms slender, single-stemmed Fiederpalms, which can grow up to 25 m high. The leaflets reach thereby lengths of up to 2 m. Both the male and the female flowers are in cylindrical panicles with about 150-200 oval drupes. These red fruits are called betel nuts or areca nuts, they are about the size of a hen's egg, about 7 cm, and enclosed with fibrous pulp a 3-10 g, brown seeds. The Areca is an ancient cultivated plant that is found throughout Southeast Asia from Malaysia to the islands of the Solomon, northeast to Taiwan and the Philippines, south to northern Australia. In Thailand, the remains of 26

APPROACH October 2016

betel nuts were found, which are dating back to over 7500 years. The plant is also cultivated in tropical rainforests in East Africa and Madagascar.

Utilization Mainly the active compounds of the plant are alkaloids, the content amounts from 0.3-0.6%. The main alkaloid are arecoline (Arecoline is a nicotinic acid -based alkaloid found in the areca nut, the fruit of the areca palm. It is an odourless oily liquid), followed by arecaidine, Arecolidin, Guvacolin and guvacine. If the nuts are chewed, a partial hydrolysis takes place, from arecoline to arecaidine.

THAI NATURE

Usage Immature betel nuts are fine chopped and chewed in Asia. Usually, these are rolled in coated slaked lime leaves, which do not originate from the betel palm, but from betel pepper (Piper betle), which then is called betel (also: sirih). Because of the bitter taste often spices such as peppermint, licorice or chewing tobacco are added. The slaked lime causes the arecoline located in the nuts to hydrolyze in arecaidine and methanol, but also attacks the gums. Meaning the conversion of the alkaloid in the free base is the lighter absorbability. The active ingredients are absorbed directly after chewing in the mouth and pass rapidly the blood-brain barrier, which is effective against fatigue. The betel chewing has been practiced for centuries, current estimates project in East Africa and Asia of more than 450 million people. By alkalizing to Phlobatannine, the color of the saliva are formed red. Therefore, in Asia this took place to coloring the lips.

Seeds of the betel palm germinate under warm and humid conditions within a few weeks. The seedlings are occasionally offered in flower shops. The leaves of young betel palms also bear no direct sunlight. From cleaned and pressed leaves of the palm, dimensionally stable items such as disposable tableware are formed.

Symptomatology Consuming betel nuts leads firstly to salivate and wellbeing. Secondly, it restricts the appetite. The effect is similar to that of alcohol. Other typical symptoms include nausea, profuse sweating and a burning sensation in the mouth and throat. In a high dose the nuts lead to bradycardia (Bradycardia is a slow heart rate, defined as a heart rate of under 60 beats per minute (BPM), shivering, vomiting, confusion, cramps and diarrhea. Death from respiratory or cardiac arrest can result.

Pharmacology The active ingredients of the plant are neurotoxic, have a stimulating effect and are toxic. The arecoline contained acts parasympathomimetisch and activates muscarinic acetylcholine receptor. It acts similar to pilocarpine. The

effect is an increased secretory gland activity, therefore increased salivation. In addition, a weak narcotic effect of arecaidine. This is due to the reduced GABA (GammaAminobutyric acid also called GABA for short, is the chief inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system) uptake inhibitory in neurons, which is initiated by the substance. Moreover arecaidine has stimulating and sedative properties. The alkaloids contained, possibly eugenol, are mutagenic and can lead to cancer in the oral cavity and esophagus.

Sales in Taiwan In Taiwan betel nut beauties can be found on every street corner and sell betel nuts. As the competition is very high, the selling girls are often scantily clad to increase sales especially in the male clientele. The points of sale are countrywide usually marked with green fluorescent lights. Taiwan's health authorities aims to reduce consumption. Regular chewing, causes besides yellow teeth and bad breath also oral cancer, in Taiwan in 2011 the fifth deadliest cancer cause. The diagnosis of oral cancer in Taiwan is received per annum by around 6000 people.

Betel measurment in India In Pondicherry (Puducherry, till 2006 officially Pondicherry, is a city in South Indias East coast, with ca 900,000 inhibitants) a piece measurment was applied; 1 Adoucu = 48 leaves Betel. October 2016 APPROACH

MONEY AFFAIRS

Have you too been left in the lurch?

I

’ve been contacted a lot recently by investors looking for guidance on what to do because they can no longer get in touch with their financial adviser. Normally, I’ll tell investors to make sure their cash is where it’s supposed to be in these circumstances, however the situation is slightly different here.

It seems that many of the investment firms that used to operate in Thailand have decided to stop offering this service to British ex-pats living here. This means that the financial advisers who used to sell their products have nothing to sell and it appears a lot of them have now gone elsewhere or are doing something else. Dubai is the new location of choice for many of these old advisers and I say that’s probably a good thing for ex-pats living in Thailand. The problem is that although the products sold by these advisers were actually OK, the underlying investments that were recommended were not. Most investments were unsuitable for retail investors as these were classified as UCIS funds – “unregulated collective investment schemes” for professional or sophisticated investors only. I was reading just yesterday that anyone who had invested in an Isle of Man based “Recycling Fund” looks to have lost everything as the liquidators don’t expect to recover anything for shareholders. I know of some pensioners who put their savings into this fund on the “advice” of their adviser. There is a common theme that runs through all of these recommendations; unregulated funds promoted by unregulated advisers who were paid very high commissions to sell them. Is it any wonder that reputable firms like Friends Provident, Skandia and Old Mutual want nothing more to do with advisers in Thailand.

So what do you do if you have an investment with one of these companies and possible some unregulated investments. You might have bought this through an offshore pension plan such as a QROPS. Remember the product will often be fine and safe – it’s only the investment that needs attention. You need to find a professional Regulated fund manager to look after your money within the policy although there is probably very little you can do about unregulated investments that have gone bust. If a regulated adviser had sold you these you would receive compensation. So for now – if you have one of these plans – contact me and I will put you in touch with a UK Regulated firm that can help. And for the future, do not ever buy any unregulated investment, especially from an unregulated adviser.

THAI LEGAL

Getting Divorced in Thailand If your divorce or dissolution is amicable and your finances are straightforward, you should be able to sort everything out relatively quickly and cheaply. You still need to go through the legal process so you are legally divorced or have dissolved your civil partnership, but you may not need to use a solicitor all the way through. There are 2 types of divorces in Thailand. These are Contested Divorces which tend to be very costly and then there are Uncontested Divorces which are much cheaper and are normally called Administrative Divorces. Speak to a Divorce Lawyer in Thailand before signing any agreements with regards to your divorce in Thailand.

An uncontested divorce is the administrative form of divorce in Thailand. A mutual agreement to end the marital consortium is enough. The couple must be physically present when applying for an uncontested divorce. It is conducted at the local register. Contested divorce is judicial or court divorce. One party

wants to end involve the courts to end his/her marriage if any of the grounds provided under Thai law is attendant. If there are disagreements on child custody and marital property sharing which the parties cannot settle by themselves, the court's intervention is necessary. Thai's usually end their marriage through an uncontested divorce. They favour this option because it averts further conflict between husband and wife, as well as their families. As much as they can, Thai couples will settle issues on the sharing of child custody and marital property privately.

Foreigner & Thai divorce - Almost always, the Thai spouse

will suggest an uncontested divorce if the marriage registration took place in Thailand. Foreigners must take extra care before proceeding to have an uncontested divorce. If your marriage is

registered through your Embassy, your home country may not recognize a Thai divorce.

Divorce between 2 Foreigners - Foreigners who want to

divorce in Thailand must seek the advice of a lawyer so they may be guided if and how they can proceed to divorce. Your Thailand divorce lawyer must be able to advise you whether your home country will recognize a divorce that you will receive in Thailand. Some countries may not recognize a foreign divorce in Thailand. Again: Always consult a Thai lawyer and your Embassy before taking final steps, especially when it comes to child custody and purchased property.

NEW

EUROPE Are we slowly recovering economically?

T

he remarkable growth achieved over the past quarter century means that lower growth on this huge base still means a big output, taking into consideration that economic powerhouse China´s growth has influenced total growth despite Eurozone problems and US slower recovery and still luring world economy problems. Chinese GDP per capita remains low despite the impressive progress that has been made over the past two decades. And, if the relevant metric is how the current generation fares relative to previous generations, growth pretty much remains a requirement. Anyone who has kept up with economic developments since the start of the year knows that the global economy has hit another pothole on the road to recovery. A week ago Eurozone data were released showing considerably more weakness than expected. The outlook for China has suddenly become clouded. The Russian economy is following oil prices downward. And Brazil is mired in recession. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble has vigorously defended the need for structural reform and the avoidance of further spending and deficits to spur European economic growth. The minister also tamped down concerns about German economic health. “We don’t have a recession in Germany, we have a weakening of growth,”

34

APPROACH October 2016

Strong export sales saved the Eurozone from stagnation in the second quarter of the year as investment slowed and domestic consumers held back on spending. Figures showed exports from the 19-member currency bloc increased 1.1%, after stagnating in the first quarter. But this surge in sales abroad was offset by flat investment, reduced stockpiles of goods, stalled government spending and only marginally higher consumer spending that restricted the overall growth rate to 0.3%. Many of the countries now performing poorly were doing very well – above the European average – before the euro was introduced. Their decline did not result from some sudden change in their labour laws, or from an epidemic of laziness in the crisis countries. What changed was the currency arrangement. The euro is more to blame than the policies and structures of individual countries. The euro was flawed at birth. This system cannot and will not work in the long run: democratic politics ensures its failure. Only by changing the Eurozone’s rules and institutions can the euro be made to work. A return to growth in France and a solid pace of expansion in Germany have helped the Eurozone shrug off the UK’s vote to quit the EU.

The

POWER

Of The

SENSES & AROMATHERAPY

The human senses are incredibly powerful and greatly affect thought, mood and many other brain functions and work together to help support our perception of our surroundings. Undoubtedly, one of the most powerful senses is the sense of smell. Concentrated essences of various flowers, fruits, herbs and plants have been used for centuries around the world but tend to be forgotten in modern time; they are replaced by petrochemicals medicines, cosmetics, perfumes, and detergents… very cheap to produce but with consequences on our body and environment yet to be fully understood. Yet, for the last few years, aromatherapy and essential oils gained in popularity in Europe and America, because they are efficient, easy and fun to use, and much cheaper than medicines and cosmetics.

Here are the 6 top essential oils that you should always keep with you in Thailand. Tea Tree Probably the most famous essential oil. It represents the main export of Australia, with over 500 tons produced in 2014. The antimicrobial action of tea tree is well known. It is widely used by cosmetic companies to cure dermatologic conditions like dandruff, acne, herpes, eczema and athlete’s foot. Tea tree essential oil is also antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-viral. It treats infections such as ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) conditions, bronchitis, sore throat and provides a physical boost in case of fatigue. It enhances the immune system and lowers fever. Tea tree essential oil is really a must-have oil. Very soft and useful, it treats skin and respiratory problems and is great for disinfection.

Lavender Lavender Oil is acclaimed for its relaxing properties. It appeases heart bit, regulates nervous system and provides restorative sleep. But it is capable of much more. It is very effective in the treatment of burns and scalds. It prevents scaring and promotes healing by stimulating the cells of a wound to regenerate more quickly. It calms muscular spams and cramps when used in massages on the affected areas. For centuries lavender has been used as an insect repellent. It keeps away mites, dusts mites and bed mites. And it brings a relaxing floral fragrance in your mattress, cushions and wardrobes. Lavender essential oil is truly a versatile oil. It helps for skincare, including sunburns, sport massage, relaxation and insect repellent.

Lemongrass Lemongrass is widely used in Thai gardens and homes to repeal mosquitoes. Lemongrass essential oil keeps this benefits and had a few more. Anti-poisonous, one drop of lemongrass essential oil on an insect bite will appease the itching feeling. Used in massage, it appease join pains (arthritis, rheumatism, gout…). It also helps to drain the lymphatic system. Therefore it is advised in case of orange skin or cellulite. You can also put a few drops in your shampoo (or a natural beauty oil such as argan) to make your hair shinning. Lemongrass essential oil is so far the best answer against mosquitoes and mosquito bites. It wears off quickly, so do not hesitate to spray it regularly.

Ravintsara Native from the island of Madagascar, Ravintsara essential oil is used for a large spectrum of purposes. The name Ravintsara means the good leafs in Malagasy. Local people use it for a long list of purposes. It is an exceptional microbicide. It reduces the infectivity of microbes such as viruses and bacteria. It can be used in case of bronchitis, flu, herpes, and hepatitis. When added to a massage oil, it relieves respiratory system, calms coughs and blocked nose. It is also a neurotonic that stimulates body and mind. Less known than tea tree essential oil and lavender essential oil, ravintsara essential oil is very helpful in case of infections and respiratory difficulties. Do not hesitate to put a few drops in a carrier oil and massage your body with it.

Geranium It seems that geranium essential oil will cure anything. Used as beauty treatment it reduces wrinkles, erases age spots and improves skin tone. Used in diffusion, its nice, soft and floral fragrance keeps mosquitoes away. It also relaxes, in case of trauma and anxiety. This oil is a great hormonal regulator. It appeases during menstruation, and can soften painful period. Geranium essential oil has many applications and its antiseptic and astringent properties contribute to its general usefulness.

Peppermint Peppermint has been used by many ancient cultures including the Egyptians, Chinese and American Indians, no doubt because of its extremely useful health-promoting properties. It is an excellent digestive, it helps the respiratory system and circulation it is an antiinflammatory, and an anti-septic. These qualities make it a good oil in the treatment of indigestion, flatulence, bad breath, flue, catarrh, varicose veins, headaches and migraine, skin irritations, rheumatism, toothache and fatigue. It even keeps mice, fleas and ants away! Peppermint essential oil is excellent in case of digestive difficulties. One drop of peppermint essential oil with 50cl of water.

Helmet

Extravaganza EDUCATE OR LEGISLATE THAT IS THE QUESTION By Anita Hollis of Insight English

On September the 14th, a “Helmet Extravaganza” was held at the Marriott Resort & Spa in Hua Hin. The aim of the Corporate Social Responsibility event was to support and generate awareness of motorbike-safety for Children by promoting the necessity to wear helmets whilst riding a motorbike with their parents or friends. The CSR event was meant to generate awareness among the Hua Hin media and locals to start wearing helmets and provide safety for their children by donating more than 1,000 helmets to students and schools within Hua Hin, Prachuab Khiri Khan Province, and provide fun activities at the same time by painting the donated helmets in each hotel.

The statistics are frightening. There are 1.3 Million motorcycles on the road. Only 7 out of every 100 children wear a helmet at all, and over 2,600 children lose their lives in accidents every year. Over 72,000 are physically or mentally handicapped for life, all because they are not wearing such an essential item.

So what should be done or can be done to improve this trend? One thing is for sure if nothing is done many more lives will be needlessly lost.

Should we be educating the children alone? It is very difficult as a parent to instil this concept into your sibling if you as a parent don’t wear a helmet in the first place. If fact, and this is true, when asked why they are wearing a helmet the most popular answer was “So I will not be fined by the police” and not “so that I don’t fracture my scull if I have an accident”. At the local school, there was something rather satisfying in watching over 200 children aged 6 to 12 decorate pristine white motorcycle helmets, especially as when they had finished they hopped on the motorcycle that picked them up from school wearing them. 42

APPROACH October 2016

A little ironic don’t you think! To be fair this is an Asia wide problem and does not only apply to Thailand. Would it be better to legislate that it is mandatory for everyone on a motorcycle to wear a helmet?

Clearly it would, but how difficult would it be to enforce. Currently I believe the law states that at least one person must be wearing a helmet, so what happens in an accident? The concrete road does not unfortunately decide whose head it will make contact with and then only pick the one wearing the helmet! The majority of accidents happen within 6 minutes from home. Educating children begins at home but must be supported by schools and local authorities. Speaking to the GM of one of the leading hotels in Hua Hin this week, he told me that his staff cannot bring their motorcycles onto the premises if they are not wearing helmets. Maybe Head teachers should adopt the same principle and not allow parents to enter or leave the school grounds unless their child is wearing a helmet. Parents may then begin to get the message.

KIDS & EDUCATION

Maybe the Police should have an amnesty for one month, no fines but you must buy a helmet! In one month’s time if you are not wearing it you will not only be fined but your motorcycle would be impounded for a period, an inconvenience that may begin to educate the user. However, what about children who don’t make their own decisions but follow the example of their parents. Surely legislation should state that all children aged 12 or under must without exemption wear a helmet, whenever they are on a motorcycle on a public road, and that the parents will be fined if this is not enforced.

Earlier this week I saw a child aged no more than 5 standing on a motorcycle seat with his hands on an adults shoulders with an older child sat behind him, and not a helmet in sight. We must do better than this, in order to save more lives. We must all be responsible and start this education process, as any change in legislation will take much longer I fear, and may not be very popular. We will return in a month to see how many helmets that were decorated yesterday are being worn when the children arrive at school.

The Schools would like to thank Hua Hin Business Network, Orchid Palm Homes and Da Vinci International School for sponsoring the helmets, Insight English for donating the prizes, and Beautiful World for assisting with all the logistics. Great Cars of the Past

1928 - 1948

Greatness, is defined by a vehicle’s direct, significant contribution to automotive culture. It actually means that its legend changed how other cars are seen in its shadow. So it’s a deliberate list in favour of cars that enthusiasts love, but it also acknowledges those everyday cars that have shaped our lives. The 1930 until the 1050s were a very special decade for motoring in America and Europe. It was a time of massive improvements in terms of automotive engineering, quality of roads, and most of all, a huge leap forward in technology.

APPROACH has selected some of the most popular cars of the past. Of some of these cars there are only a handful remaining.

1939 Lincoln Continental Mark II Edsel Ford’s invention was the concept of the American “personal luxury” car with this 4800 cc.- V12 - 110 HP powered coupe, the Zephyr. It bridged the wide gap between Ford’s V-8 De Luxe line and the exclusive Lincoln K-series cars. A long hood, short deck and a tire on the rump set a new trend. The “Zephyr” was unique in this class having a V-12, while the LaSalle had a V8 engine, and the Chrysler and Packard has straight 8 engines. Presently, it is valued at approx. US$ 150.000 Only 4,076 of these most extravagant cars were built at a time when a custom coach-built body was a symbol of status and wealth. The V16 became the one of the most revered chassis. he Fleetwood was over 11 years in production. Powered by a V16 Engine,7400 cc at 165 HP. When Cadillac was the standard of the world, this was the car that set that standard. Price as Auctioned US$ 495.000

1930 Cadillac V16 Fleetwood

1948 Jaguar XK120 The Bugatti Veyron of its day. Long, low, sleek with a great big six 3442 cc. – 183 HP under its hood, the XK120 was the fastest car you could buy at the time, with an incredible top speed of 120 mph. US$ 120.000 on inquiry

46

APPROACH October 2016

1932 Ford V8 Model B & Model 18 The first performance car a working man could afford, with looks swiped straight from Duesenberg. This car has defined American automotive culture for nearly 80 years. The engine was a cast iron 3600 cc. V8 block with 65 HP. pushing it up to nearly 80 km/h.Market prices US$ 35.000.

MOTORING

1928 Mercedes Benz SSK The SSK was the last car designed for Mercedes-Benz by the engineer Ferdinand Porsche before he left to found his own company. Fitted with a supercharged single overhead camshaft 7000cc. straight-6 engine producing 300 HP. The SSK had a top speed of up to 190 km/h), making it the fastest car of its day. A 1929 model was auctioned in GB at US $ 7,7 Million1929 The Phantom II’s received coachwork from the most notable coachbuilders of the time. The interior is the most astonishing, outfitted with lavish appointments that spared no expense. The floor is made of faux Mink while the trim in the rear compartment is made up of German plated gold hardware and walnut wood. It was powered by a 7700 cc. block that could produce 120 horsepower and a maximum speed of 92 mph. Auction sales were up to US $ 350,000 for a well-kept model.

Rolls Royce Phantom II Continental

1938 Bugatti Type 57S Atlantic Still one of the most beautiful cars ever built and one of the most advanced for its time but also, the “most desirable classic automobile in the world”.
