Editor in Chief Gerard Mosselman Office Manager Pimwee P. (Kob) I sincerely hope and am sure that the atrocities going on in Hua Hin and other towns hit by the recent disasters have come to an end. Anywhere you look today, the solution to problems and dislike seem to be drastic physical measures, and whether it is revenge or warnings, usually someone gets hurt may it be intentionally or not. You may be at the wrong place at the wrong time. However as the show must go on, my deepest respect for friends at the Hyatt who did not cancel a beautiful classical concert because of the happenings under the Motto: “not giving in to terror”. As peace once again returned to our towns, there is so much that speaks in favour of Thailand with its beautiful beaches, reasonable prices and great climate, tourists will not cease to spend their holidays here. What is very incomprehensible however is that we pay more than 2,000 Baht a month for a platinum TV membership, but no Olympic games shown on any channel. There have been some astonishing results with reporters commenting on a flashing Bolt that he did not have the speed in his last 200m finals, but won the dash. Having been in light athletics myself, with your opponents behind you, you adjust automatically. The closer they get, the faster you go! With Tennis, nationally and internationally now seriously mounting at True Arena, there is a lot of very good Tennis to watch during the next months. Check APPROACH Magazine Facebook for updates.

MUSIC

In Memoriam -

Elvis Presley 35 years ago on the 16th of August, Elvis Presley, also know as “The King of Rock-n-Roll” passed away. Elvis Presley changed the way this country and the world viewed music and ushered in a new age of music and celebrity stardom with his decades of hit songs, entertaining live shows, hit movies and the public’s fascination with his life. Elvis Aaron Presley was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, as a twin. His brother was stillborn. When he was 13 years old, he and his family relocated to Memphis, Tennessee. His music career began there in 1954, when he recorded a song with producer Sam Phillips at Sun Records. Accompanied by guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black, Presley was an early populariser of rockabilly, an up-tempo, backbeat-driven fusion of country music and rhythm and blues. RCA Victor acquired his contract in a deal arranged by Colonel Tom Parker, who managed the singer for more than two decades. Presley's first RCA single, "Heartbreak Hotel", was released in January 1956 and became a number-one hit in the United States.. Regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, he is often referred to as "the King of Rock and Roll", or simply, "the King". Presley is one of the most celebrated and influential musicians of the 20th century. Commercially successful in many genres, including pop, blues and gospel, he is the best-selling solo artist in the history of recorded music with estimated record sales of around 600 million units worldwide. He won three Grammys, also receiving the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at age 36, and has been inducted into multiple music halls of fame. Presley was known for a life of luxury and excess, as exemplified by his estate at Graceland. He owned a number of expensive cars, including three pink Cadillacs. The cultural range of his music has expanded to the point where it includes not only the hits of the day, but also patriotic recitals, pure country gospel, and really dirty blues. ... Elvis has emerged as a great artist, a great rocker, a great purveyor of schlock, a great heart throb, , a great symbol,a great nice person, and, yes, a great American. 12

It is not all Tennis and Fitness at True Arena aria, the clubhouse restaurant on the ground floor facing centre court, offers a selection of international, Italian, Thai and Asian cuisines in a sporty casual yet fine dining atmosphere.

M

The primo piatto, Grilled Marinated Vegetable Salad, a fresh lettuce salad with grilled vegetables consisting of zucchinis, eggplant, beetroot and bell peppers covered with Parmesan shavings.

It is perfect place to relax after a tennis match or a workout to enjoy healthy food full of minerals and energy spending vitamins.

The second course, Baked Black Cod filet, pan-fried black codfish with grilled vegetables and a passion fruit based sweet sour sauce on the side. Low fat and still nutritious but definitely delicious fruity.

Freshly off the Tennis court, showered and ready for dinner, Khun Narong Chai “Jeaw” F & B / Restaurant Manager “The Long One” welcomed us at Maria restaurant for our review.

The main course, Pan Roasted Duck Breast, was a composition of oven grilled duck breast with sautéed vegetables on lettuce leafs with Dutch Croquette balls and a beet root-red wine sauce to go with the duck. The duck breast was medium well done roasted and full of flavour. A Pinotage from the Western South African cape blended perfectly with the roasted duck.

Chef Nattawut “Aon” had prepared a variety of dishes, starting off with afresh yoghurt shake inhibited with beetroot juice, lime and honey and ginger. Energy and freshness spending. The starter, Chunky Tomato – Beetroot Soup, an athletic soup based on beetroot and tomato chunks, made into a soup smoothie. An unusual taste but on its own pretty savoury and fresh.

The dessert was an interesting Ginger Crème Brulé with the ginger giving it a special taste, making it less sweet and “never had before”. Summing it up, Maria Restaurant definitely serves healthy, well tasting food, as Chef Aon, who had joined me at the table explained that it is his target to serve food for athletes but also for healthy fine dining. APPROACH highly recommends Maria, not only after fitness and Tennis but for a night out with your loved ones. There is a menu for all tastes….and by the way, the breakfasts are great! Whilst we were there, we went up to the 5th floor, known as Hawk Eye Rooftop Bar offering beautiful panoramic views of Hua Hin with plenty of space available for elegant events and gatherings under the stars and a dip in the infinity rooftop pool.

TRAVEL IN THAILAND

A Home in Thailand

Away from Home Thailand, known for its tropical beaches, opulent royal palaces, ancient ruins and ornate temples displaying figures of Buddha, a revered symbol and of course, Thai cuisine. Thailand offers a mix of everything from vibrant cosmopolitan cities to quiet waterside towns. In Bangkok, the capital, an ultramodern cityscape rises next to quiet canal and riverside communities. Thailand has turned into a popular destination for expats in search of a change of scenery, new cultural experiences, a lower cost of living, a home away from home not only during retirement.

KRABI TOWN Krabi features a number of cosy cafes and inexpensive restaurants, one of Thailand’s best cities if you’re looking for a peaceful living. Krabi is a small town on the west coast of southern Thailand, situated along the banks of the Krabi River where it empties into Phang Nga Bay on the Gulf of Siam. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the area’s natural beauty as a result of its plentiful natural attractions including, white sandy beaches, crystal clear water, extensive coral reefs, numerous caves and waterfalls, and over 130 islands, including Koh Lanta and the jewels of the Andaman coast. Beach life is never too far away, with Ao Nang, a seaside strip of guesthouses, hotels, bars, restaurants, and Noppharat Thara, whose quiet, shady beach is part of the national park that includes the Phi Phi Islands.

CHIANG MAI Thailand’s “Rose of the North” is a cultural and natural wonderland with ethnic diversity, a multitude of attractions and welcoming hospitality. Chiang Mai is a natural setting for everything from white-water rafting and kayaking, to mountain biking and jungle trekking. 22

APPROACH September 2016

The city of Chiang Mai, considered the cultural heart of northern Thailand. Chiang Mai sits among the country’s highest mountains, the Doi Inthanon 2,565 m (8,415 ft). The old city of Chiang Mai is a showcase of the north’s fascinating indigenous cultural identity that includes diverse dialects, a delectable cuisine, distinctive architecture, traditional values, lively festivals, numerous handicrafts workshops and classical dances. There are 3 large shopping malls. The presence of numerous hill tribes that feature a wealth of unique cultures enhances Chiang Mai’s distinctive diversity. When you feel like a city fix, Chiang Mai offers museums, nightlife, international restaurants, shopping, and more than 300 Buddhist temples.

HUA HIN The oldest and most traditional Thai holiday resort combines the attractions of a modern travel destination with the charm and fascination of a still active fishing port. And while most other Thai holiday destinations cater mainly to foreign tourists, Hua Hin is a holiday resort for both foreigners and Thais. Besides its great 5 mile (8 kilometer) long beach Hua Hin provides accommodation options of all levels, great restaurants of all cuisines and price levels, and last but not least the highest density of world class golf courses anywhere in Thailand. In the 1920 when Rama VI (King Vajiravudh) and Rama VII (King

TRAVEL IN THAILAND found here: modern shopping malls, a large number of entertainment venues for every taste, numerous art museums – both contemporary and classic art, a huge variety of restaurants, and state of the art public transport through a sky train and connecting subway! CHIANG RAI

Prajadhipok) built summer residences here to escape Bangkok’s stifling climate. Rama VII’s endorsement of Hua Hin and the construction of the southern railway made the town the place to be for Thai nobility who built their own summer residences beside the sea.

With Thailand being one of the cheapest countries on Earth, Chiang Rai would be one of the cheapest cities. Chiang Rai is located about 100 miles from Chiang Mai, in Thailand’s northernmost province, and is surrounded by mountains, rice fields, forests, rivers and beautiful waterfalls. Although expats should expect a rural lifestyle, Chiang Rai does offer the basic amenities –

peaceful days spent on white-sand beaches and action-packed nights in any of the area’s nightclubs. Phuket is known for its food, and you can enjoy some of the best Thai-style seafood in the country, as well as a variety of international restaurants, including Indian, Italian and sushi. Rayong is an up-and-coming expat destination. Located along Thailand’s Eastern Gulf Coast. It boasts some of the most peaceful beach living in the country. Though rural, an easy 2.5 hour drive gets you to Bangkok. Because of Rayong’s natural beauty – and its proximity to the country’s largest city – new condo developments and hotels have begun to pop up along the coast to serve resident tourists and expats alike.

Today, Hua Hin is very internationally developed with multiple residential real estate developments, prestigious villas compounds and high rise condominiums by Thai and foreign development companies.

BANGKOK Bangkok is the city of choice if you’re looking for a cosmopolitan living & retirement. With a population of more than 9 million, it is one of the largest cities in the world and home to temples and palaces, canals an exciting nightlife and ample shopping. It’s the contradictions that give the City of Angels its rich, multifaceted personality. Anything you want in a big city can be

including restaurants, a hospital and a shopping mall. The climate in Chiang Rai is the coolest in the country. It has very inexpensive houses, condos and apartments, good food and friendly people.

PHUKET AND RAYONG Phuket, for example – Thailand’s largest island – offers the best of both worlds:

THE BOTTOM LINE

Thailand’s natural beauty, endless beaches, and lower cost of living make it a prime retirement destination. Thriving communities of expats can be found throughout Thailand, and retirees can choose from vibrant, cosmopolitan cities like Bangkok, or quiet riverside towns, such as Krabi. Albeit, mountainous regions such as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are attractive nature embedded cities whereas Hua Hin and Rayong offer sandy beaches and small city life closer to Bangkok. The cost of living Index of Thailand is 41.98 ( Cost of living index is a relative indicator of consumer goods price, including groceries, restaurants, transportation and utilities) Thailand is estimated to be 67% less expensive than New York and 38% less expensive than Germany and 46% less than Sweden.

FRANCAIS

THAI NATURE

The

Little Grebe Tachybaptus ruficollis

By Dr. George F. Grossniklaus

The Little Grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis) is a species in the family of grebes. This widespread species in Eurasia and Africa is in Europe the smallest member of this family. Grebe are found in Europe quite often. However, they are often overlooked because of their inconspicuous plumage and their particular very secretive lifestyle during the breeding season.

Appearance Little Grebe gain a length 25 to 29 cm. The wingspan is about 40 to 45 cm. The Little Grebe can be 130-235 g in weight. The males are average slightly larger than females and have slightly stronger beaks. The shape of the little grebe is very variable. In a quietly floating position, the feathers are mainly at the rear erected something so that the body seems swollen. Then the neck is hardly visible. Distressed grebe stretch the neck long. The back is then flat on the water, and may even disappear under the water. In the air, little grebe leaves his outstretched neck far under the body axis, the legs are tightened. Little Grebe fly up very easily. The flight is fast and they usually fly at low altitude over the water surface. In breeding plumage, the body top of the nominate form is

black brown. The top of the head and the rear neck are black and dark brown. The top of the head often has a slight greenish tinge, reins and chin are black. The throat, cheeks, neck sides and the lower neck are reddish brown. The body sides are dark brown with bright dotting. The body bottom is glossy white with an admixture blackish tones. The lower wings are white, the flight feathers are dark brown with a high proportion of white, so that on the wings, a white mirror is visible. The tail feathers are brown. The beak is black with a white tip, the beak angles are bright greenish yellow. The iris is reddish brown, the running and the feet are grey-green. The plumage colour on the flanks and on the body bottom varies depending on the subspecies. Several subspecies have yellowish brown edges and a silvery white belly. In other parts of the body, these are also feathery black. Eye colour also varies. In the Asian subspecies the colour is yellow in the European and African subspecies contrast reddish brown to bright red. Adult Little Grebe moult from August to October into the winter dress, the change may extend in some individuals until

THAI NATURE November and even December. In full moult, first the head starts continue with the neck. The flight feathers are all changed at once. In normal plumage, little grebe are coloured very inconspicuous. The plumage coloration is overall lighter, the colours are washed-out. In Asian subspecies, the red-brown colour on the sides of the head, stay also in all variation of plumage. The populations in Indonesia, New Guinea and neighbouring islands as well as in Malaysia do not change the plumage, but carry their breeding plumage all year.

Appearance of nestlings and fledglings Newly hatched nestlings are in the neck and back neck blackish brown. The forehead is covered with whitish-silvery hair-like dunes. The nestlings show over the eye a narrow beige to orange stripe. The chin is white and has a brown mottling on. The striped pattern on the face is not quite as intense as in the great crested grebe or the red-necked grebe.

Nutrition Little Grebes are excellent swimmers and divers, and track, especially also fish. Otherwise, they live mainly on insects. They are pecked from the water surface or found in the upper layers. But it also picks from plants or catch flying insects. More than other grebes they also eat mollusks. In addition, they eat amphibian larvae and fish fry.

Voice During the breeding season the little grebe often reveals its presence by its striking long trill. Both sexes have the same calls. Often both partners call even in a duet. The call of aggressive excited little grebe is shrill and falls at the end of the phrase in its pitch significantly. The alarm call is a sharp, metallic pit.

Breeding The actual courtship, which always takes place on the water, is especially recognizable by continuous trills of both partners as well as by rapid contrary swimming, parallel swimming and diving, in which leaves them often demonstratively clapboard with their feet, water. There are mutual loud translucent tracking, food presentation, ritualized nest building, presentation of plant material and parallel flying.

Brood

Distribution The distribution area reaches from Western and Central Europe via West Asia and India to China and Japan as well as Southeast Asia to New Guinea. It also includes large parts of Africa and Madagascar. The distribution area covers, estimated by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources), total 36.7 million square kilometers. In this vast area, however, nowhere it is excessively frequent.

Habitat The Little Grebe settles during breeding periods, preferably to smaller standing waters or slow flowing streams or rivers. Of particular importance is a distinct sedimentation zone and a well-trained underwater and floating leaf vegetation and a large density of water invertebrates. They shun usually waters, which contain large predatory fish. Outside the breeding season they use very different habitats. They are then also on the coasts, to be found on large lakes and ponds, on fast-flowing rivers and streams.

Like all grebes also the Little Grebe nest usually at the waterfront. The nest is usually a set-coated in shallow water heap from plant parts. In deeper water, the nest is occasionally an anchored floating nest at shore plants. On construction of the nest, both parents birds are involved. For nesting they use dead water plants of the species, which are often on the relevant waters. The nest has a diameter of 20 to 30 cm, usually it extends 3.5 to 4.5 centimeters above the water level. The nest hollow has a diameter of approximate 4 centimeters. The nest has usually four to six eggs. The eggs are white immediately after oviposition, the color changes later to brownish. Both adult birds are involved in the breeding. When parents leave the nest during the breeding session, the eggs are covered with nesting material. The chicks hatch after an incubation period of 20 to 21 days. They are fed by both parents birds. The young birds are independent at an age of 30 to 40 days. However, they remain generally near their parents. Fledging is at ages of 44-48 days.

HOME & GARDEN

POLY RATTAN

GARDEN FURNITURE

Synthetic rattan (or Poly rattan) was invented in Germany in the 1990’s, and is like natural rattan, a material derived from the so-called Rotan tree (a vine like plant), often used to produce wicker items such as baskets, trays and patio furniture. Synthetic rattan is simply long strips of plastic, generally made from polyethylene fiber resin, and comes in many colours and textures. The material is highly durable, resistant to the sun’s UV rays and completely water proof. Wicker (said to derive from the Scandinavian word “vika” which means “to bend”) is a method of weaving using rattan or bamboo. Wicker furniture was hugely popular in Europe and USA in the 19th century, and furniture producers are now using synthetic rattan, often on a frame of aluminium, to create light weight and maintenance-free modern wicker furniture. Synthetic rattan furniture has long been popular in the west, and is growing in popularity in Thailand as well, replacing more traditional hard wood and natural wicker furniture. There are nowadays many suppliers of synthetic rattan furniture in Thailand, and many different price levels. The general rule is that you get what you pay for. If it is very cheap it is most definitely not a high quality product. Good quality synthetic rattan furniture is normally more expensive than natural wicker furniture, but less expensive than hard wood furniture. Important when buying synthetic rattan furniture is to make sure that the frame is made of aluminium and not steel, which will quickly rust, and that the synthetic rattan wicker is not too soft and “rubbery”, which is a sign of low quality. Also make sure that the furniture comes with at least 1 years guarantee against discolouring and breakages. Pictures & Text Courtesy of The Cabinet Interior Design Co. Ltd. – Hua Hin 34

MONEY AFFAIRS

Credit Card

DEBT

Do almost anything legal to clear credit card debt. If there is anything worse than an unfaithful, unreliable and untrustworthy spouse then it has to be credit card debt If you are serious about it here are some dramatic ways you can clear it.

GET A LOAN FROM FAMILY OR FRIENDS This is fraught with danger, the obvious pitfall being that any dispute about repayments could lead to a severing of relations. However, if you can get over the embarrassment of asking for help, the big advantage is that loans from a family member or a friend are often interest free. There will be less chance of any resentment if some interest is paid.

By Jerry Mcmenamin

interest and penalty charges, try and get a personal loan from your bank or credit union to pay off the card debt. Rates vary round the world but for sure they will be a lot cheaper than the punitive credit cards.

SELL YOUR SECOND CAR If you are lucky enough to have a second car or a buy-to-let property or a holiday home then it might be wise to sell these items if you are heavily in debt. Selling off any spare goods, golf clubs, DVD’s TV’s, even expensive paintings and furniture will help. Granted, you will be selling at distressed prices but if you are really serious about eliminating your card debt you will dispose of everything you do not need for day-to-day living.

USE YOUR SAVINGS TO CLEAR DEBTS Many people have debts and savings at the same time. However, it makes no sense to have Stg10,000 sitting in a bank account earning at most 1.5pc if you are struggling with credit card debt where the interest rate is probably at least 21pc.

Most important of all - Cut up your credit card Another way of showing your good faith is to offer some collateral. For example, you could hand over a valuable watch (as long as it’s not from Soi Bintabat) until the loan is repaid as a way of showing that this is a fair and formal deal.

GET A BANK LOAN If you are heavily indebted and still maintain a life, even for a few months every year in the West, it is possible to have the interest and penalty charges frozen on your card. Credit card companies don't admit this, but if you are heavily in arrears they will agree to freeze the interest and penalties. Once you get the credit card company to stop applying the

Any person receiving foreign currencies from abroad is required to sell such foreign currencies to an authorized financial institution or to deposit them in a foreign currency account with an authorized financial institution within 360 days from receipt, except foreigners temporarily staying in Thailand for not more than three months, foreign embassies, and international organizations. In other words: Any person who brings or takes an aggregate amount of foreign currency exceeding $20,000 or its equivalent out of or into Thailand shall declare such amount of foreign currency to a Customs Officer. Failure to declare upon bringing currency that exceeds the amount restricted by law or its equivalent out of or into Thailand or making any false declaration to a Customs Officer is a criminal offence. Wiring money from an overseas bank account to your Thai bank account (or vice versa) usually takes one to three days, though sometimes it can take more than a week, depending upon the

banks and the system used. It can also be pretty expensive, with fees on both ends. One of the cheapest ways to transfer money from a foreign bank is to send an international cashier’s cheque or money order which you prepare at a bank. Such a cheque should be sent by a registered international courier, e.g., FedEx or DHL or UPS. Transferring money outside Thailand requires an invoice from the remote receiver, and you should bring as much documentation as you can. Currently, it is said that you can take out Local currency: up to 50,000.- Baht per person or 100,000.- Baht per family holding one passport. Foreign currencies: unlimited. However, amounts of foreign currency exceeding $20,000.- (or equivalent) must be declared to a Customs Officer upon departure by all travellers. (This may be out of date. Check for the latest.) To convert Thai baht into cash during times of questionable government policies and currency speculation has required you show your plane ticket as a reason for converting Thai baht into foreign currency. However, most of the time there is no problem in central Bangkok if it’s not a large amount of money to be converted.

EXPANDING T

he Eurozone economy is still expanding, despite the supposed shock of the UK's recent Brexit vote, a survey suggests. The Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) says Eurozone activity in August was at its highest for seven months on August 23, 2016

Sterling has fallen significantly since the vote, driven by uncertainty about Britain's economic outlook and its future relationship with the rest of the EU. The drop has been accentuated by the cut in interest rates and the Bank of England's economic stimulus measures.

German private sector growth slowed in August, but remained robust overall, its PMI showed, suggesting Europe's biggest economy is set to keep on expanding in the summer months after it grew more than expected in the second quarter

Against the dollar, the pound is now worth about $1.30. A year ago it was worth $1.57 - a fall of 17%. Against the euro, it is now worth about â‚Ź1.15. A year ago it was worth â‚Ź1.35 - a fall of 14%

Surprisingly strong growth in France supported stable Eurozone private business activity during August but factories could face a tougher September as new order growth stumbled. As such, it is widely seen as a good indicator of business activity. It was pointed out to the economy of the Eurozone expanding by 0.3% in the third quarter of this year. That would chime with a recent forecast by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that the Eurozone economy will grow by about 1.6% this year! Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, Retail sales in July were up 5.9% on the same month last year helped by warmer weather and a weaker pound. UK industrial output grew at the fastest rate for 17 years in the April-to-June quarter, up 2.1% compared with the first quarter of the year. The ONS said "very few" respondents had been affected by the uncertainty from the referendum. 40

APPROACH September 2016

One beneficiary of cheaper sterling has been the UK's own tourism sector, as a weaker pound makes Britain a cheaper destination for overseas tourists. The travel analytics firm ForwardKeys says flight bookings to the UK rose 7.1% after the vote.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

A

AGING with DIGNITY

little-known reality is that 70 percent of people over 65 will need long-term care at some point in their lives. If fighting off Father Time by deflating your cholesterol count, stress levels and reducing the ale and wine intake is tucked somewhere in the back of your mind, maybe you should keep it there. With a longer, healthier life as a goal, perhaps you should be turning more of your attention to making friends, waging war on your waistline, and extinguishing your cigarettes for good. In addition to inner body care, there are also products for the outer body which, with an adapted healthy lifestyle will definitely make you look fresher and younger as you age with dignity. Curiosity and creativity help transform older people into seemingly younger ones, even if their joints ache and even once their days of enjoying free access to the office copying machine are a distant memory. Individuals who are always learning something new about the world, maintaining a playful spirit, and finding younger friends as they lose older ones also are making the most of the aging process. Well things have changed dramatically in terms of understanding what causes cell ageing, many scientists even have said that some ingredients used in skincare can speed 44

APPROACH September 2016

up the ageing process indeed! People have a wide variety of wish lists for improving their health, but we all share one goal: Everyone wants to age well. Of course, aging is somewhat unfair, because a few lucky people will breeze easily through eight or nine decades without even trying - due to their good genes — while the rest of us have to put in some effort just to get that far. For example, the food you eat influences the production of harmful free radicals during metabolism. Although research on this subject is far from complete, damage from free radicals (called oxidative stress) is widely considered one of many factors that cause cells to age and malfunction in various ways.

HEALTH & WELLNESS Some health tips: Bake, don’t broil: Foods cooked with high heat develop toxic compounds called Advanced Glycation End products, or AGEs, that accelerate aging. AGEs are found in high quantities in processed foods such as American cheese, fast food and dark colas, because they are manufactured using high heat. Low-fat cheese, dried fruit, fruit juice and air-popped popcorn are healthier. Also, cook your food at lower temperatures: A fried egg has 10 times the AGEs of a scrambled egg, for example, and a steak has 10 times more AGEs than beef stew. Also: Less Fat , less Sugar, less Salt, drink more water.

Studies are piling up that show how harmful it is not to get enough sleep. People who are sleeping less than six hours a night are at risk for more cardiovascular events, more likely to develop diabetes, more likely to die sooner.

Stress less: Stress ages you. People who handle stress well do more of the things that non-stressed people do: eat well, sleep enough and, especially, exercise. Stress can make you feel less motivated to do promoting things in life like practice mindfulness meditation. While sitting at your desk you can push back against stress by regularly taking a few long, deep, slow breaths and by picturing yourself out in nature, paying close attention to how it would smell and feel. Have a hobby: Compared with people who did not Exercise: Moderate exercise helps neutralize free radicals, boost your immune system and even grow new brain cells. Looking at normal-weight individuals only, the data showed that walking 30 minutes a day, five days a week was associated with an increase in life span of more than seven years. You don’t gain by jogging as much as you gain by going from being a couch potato to just walking 10 minutes per day. That is a huge difference.

have hobbies, those who participated in a hobby had a significantly lower mortality and a lower likelihood of becoming bedridden during the period studied. Having a hobby was linked to a lower risk of hypertension in both males and females. Hobbies have linked to keeping your brain active and providing a social connection with others, which tends to make you happier — a factor linked to greater health and longevity.

KIDS & EDUCATION

Secondary Education in the

UNITED STATES S

econdary education in the United States refers to the last four years of statutory formal education (grade nine through grade twelve – “Freshman – Sophomore, Junior and Senior” ) either at high school or split between a final year of 'junior high school' and three in high school. Most also have "honors" classes for motivated and gifted students, where the quality of education is higher and much more is expected from the enrolled student. Successful completion of middle school or junior high school leads to entry into high school. Many states require that courses in the "core" areas of English, science, social

studies, and mathematics every year although others allow more choice after 10th grade. The majority of high schools require four English credits to graduate. Generally, three science courses are required. Biology, chemistry, and physics are usually offered. Courses such as 50

APPROACH September 2016

physical and life science serve as introductory alternatives to those classes. Other science studies include geology, anatomy, astronomy, health science, environmental science, and forensic science. High school mathematics courses typically include pre-algebra, algebra I, geometry, algebra II w/ trigonometry classes. Advanced study options can include precalculus, calculus, statistics, and discrete math generally with an opportunity to earn Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) accreditation. Usually, only three math credits are required

for graduation (although four is recommended). Graduation from high school leads to the awarding of the high school diploma. After this secondary education is considered complete and students may pursue tertiary level study.

It is estimated that some 2 million or 2.9% of U.S. children are home educated. Home schooling is lawful in all 50 states, and although the U.S. Supreme Court has never ruled on home-schooling, it supported the rights of Amish parents to keep their children out of public schools for religious reasons. Teachers are certified in one of two areas for high school (and in some states, certification can be to teach grades 6-12). These certifications can overlap. In Missouri, for example, middle school certification covers grades 6–8, elementary school certification covers up to grade 5, and high school certification covers grades 9–12. This reflects the wide range of grade combinations of middle schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools. Alternatively, some states certify teachers in various curricular areas (such as math or history) to teach secondary education.

hen it comes to practical transport, SUV´s are the most spacious but not always the most practical as they are sometimes hard to park, if you find a space. The ride is a bit on the hard side and economics are not great. Ultimately their purchase prices are on the high side. Thai car purchasers hate hatchbacks, they want big cars with big boots, and they want pickup trucks most of all, however.... Compact cars, four door sedans and hatch backs are far more easily handled and cheaper whereas they use less petrol or diesel. Although Hybrids are on the horizon, they are importantly more expensive and battery life seems to be limited to 5 years which will force you to pay an important service fee to renew them.

The Citroen C1 is the smallest car in the French brand’s range, and it shares its platform and engines with the Toyota Aygo and Peugeot 108 ( a 1.2 l. petrol engine with impressive low emissions). It’s got plenty of French style, though, with large round headlights, the choice of three or five-door body styles, the option of a full-length canvas roof and plenty of personalisation options. Fuel economy of 4.4 l. /per 100km it is the most economical of the chosen cars.

Basic price in the UK is about 325,000 Baht without taxes. The price in Thailand will depend on import duties and taxes.

VW UP (Imported)

Low running costs are a top priority for up! Volkswagen has made sure the UP is very affordable to own. Like the Hyundai i10, Toyota Aygo and Skoda Citigo, this is a frugal car designed for the city. A 1.0-litre petrol engine producing 59 and 74bhp respectively and turbocharged version with 89bhp and can return a fuel economy of 4.6 l. /per100 Km.

You would need to import the VW UP from the UK where the basic model costs 405,000 Baht without local taxes.

Hyundai i10 Blue Drive

The Hyundai i10 isn’t quite a household name, but it has enough going for it to be seen as a serious rival to cars like theHonda Brio and Toyota Aygo. If short, urban journeys make up a lot of your daily driving routine, you could do a lot worse than one of these. The Hyundai i10 doesn’t fare quite as well on fuel economy as some of the other compacts. But 5.0l./per 100 km is quite an acceptable figure.

The price in Thailand (Imported from Korea) estimated at 450,000 Baht

OLYMPIA 1896 vs. 2016 Athens versus T

he Olympics in Rio de Janeiro have come to an end. Going back in history, the 1896 Olympics were regarded as a great success. The Games had the largest international participation of any sporting event to that date. The following Summer Olympics were already planned for other venues. The Olympics did not return to Greece until the 2004 Summer Olympics, 108 years later. Women participated for the first time at the 1900 Paris Games with the inclusion of women's events in lawn tennis and golf. Women's athletics and gymnastics debuted at the 1928 Olympics. In 2012, women's boxing was introduced, resulting in no remaining sports that do not include events for women. Now every national Olympic committee has sent women to the Olympic Games.

In 2016 The big winners in Rio de Janeiro were:

In 2020, Japan will host the Olympic games. Japan has been an Olympic land since the Summer Games of 1964, which were the first to be staged in Asia, if we include the Winter Games of 1972 in Sapporo and of 1998 in Nagano. 56
