Remembering Thailand’s beloved KING BHUMIBOL & the many development projects His Majesty initiated.

K

ing Bhumibol, also known as Rama IX of the Chakri Dynasty, served 70 years as the constitutional monarch of the Southeast Asian nation. Tirelessly striving to maintain the monarchy’s influence amid a dozen coups, periods of military rule, and the killing of protesters, King Bhumibol’s influence on the nation was undeniable. King Bhumibol often referred to as the “People’s King”. His legacy will persevere in a country with long-standing traditions of patriotism and loyalty to the royal family. His projects brought electricity and rural development to remote villages and countless farms. King Bhumibol treated all Thai people the same. He was the centre of Thais. Few monarchs in history have earned the absolute adoration of their subjects to the same extent. King Bhumibol was also portrayed as the “Development King”. He dedicated much of his reign to royal projects that developed infrastructure at the forefront of providing food and basic necessities for his people, by his people to improve the quality of Thai people’s lives. There are different national Royal project which are divided into several categories. The Royal Development Projects are the private projects of Their Majesties the King and Queen, such as the crop

substitution project and the preservation of watershed areas in the North. The objectives of the crop substitution project are to stop opium cultivation, deforestation, and the slash and burn cultivation methods used by the hilltribes. His Majesty has given advice and assistance to hilltribes on how to plant cool climate fruits and flowers, which yield a better income. The Projects Under Royal Patronage are projects on which His Majesty gives advice and guidelines to the private sector, which then implements them using their own funds, technical and human resources. These projects include the Thai Encyclopaedia Project for Youth, the Dictionary Project, and the Din Daeng Cooperative Village Development Project. The Royal-Initiated Projects are projects which His Majesty initiated, and gave advice to government agencies concerning necessary studies and implementation. Last but not least there are the projects initiated according to His Majesty’s wishes, where the King had hands on. He conducted, studied, developed and experimented personally.

All these projects concerned Agriculture, Water Resources, Public Health, Welfare, and Environment among many others. A brilliant Self-Sufficient theory is developed in which the country finds a way to pull out of the economic crisis that erupted in 1997. A “New Theory about farming was suggested by His Majesty which divided farmland into four portions, namely 30 percent for a water source, 30 percent for a rice field, 30 percent for mixed crops such as fruit trees and vegetables and 10 percent for residence, animal farms and rice barns. It was uncomplicated, easily implemented, and did not involve costly technology. It was tried and tested, and produced satisfactory results. Farmers who have followed this theory have become self-sufficient and self-reliant. The Sufficiency Economy Philosophy has been officially adopted for use in some countries like Afghanistan, where in 2003, Thailand actively joined the UN’s program for rehabilitation of the country. Thailand was involved in plans to promote the development of Afghanistan in a sustainable manner. November 2016 APPROACH

surrounding villages. His Majesty the King graciously conferred the name Mae Ngat Somboon Chon Dam on January 16th, 1986 and performed the inauguration ceremony of the dam on February 22nd, 1986. Later, in 2005, The Khun Dan Prakan Chon Dam was completed. It is 93m high, 2720m long and an incredible 5.5 million cubic meters of concrete. It has a storage capacity of 224 million cubic meters of water. It is the biggest dam in Thailand. It is also the largest and longest roller compacted concrete (RCC) dam in the world. The lives of Nakhon Nayok’s people have improved considerably with the completion of the dam. Tourism and agriculture revenues are up and local land values have jumped sharply as investors look to cash in on the booming tourist industry Over the years the ORDPB and the RDSCs have hosted numerous foreign researchers, scientists, diplomats and other dignitaries that included delegations from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Chile, Germany, Israel, Laos, Lesotho and Indonesia as well as diplomats based in Thailand. In 1988, he established the Chaipattana Foundation to fund and help in accelerating rural development projects that are beneficial to the people and the country as a whole. On June 14th, 1988, The Chaipattana Foundation was officially registered as a juristic entity. The King proclaimed: “The Chaipattana Foundation is a non-governmental organisation. All committee members have freedom to consider and initiate work activities. The King is the Honorary President of the Foundation. We are public-spirited developers joining to contribute to national and social development. Our joy comes when such progress is realized. That is truly ‘Chaipattana’ or the Victory of Development.” The Foundation invests in projects that will yield long-term results and help the people to help themselves. With his true concern for rural people, His majesty has spent most of his time visiting people in remote areas while giving the local authorities and villagers valuable advices on the sustainable development of natural resources, particularly water and forest resources. His Majesty has initiated thousands of development projects, which include the construction of dams such as the Mae Ngat Dam and irrigation systems. The Mae Ngat Dam for example was constructed by the Royal Irrigation Department in 1977. and has a total storage capacity of 325 million cubic meters. A powerhouse was constructed later with two 4.5 kW generators, which provides approximately 29 million kWh of energy to 10

Sandwich and Super Sandwich Royal Rainmaking In an effort to stimulate rain in the country’s worst-hit areas, King Bhumibol Adulyadej personally supervised a special Royal Rainmaking Center, expanding a unique cloud-seeding technique he patented in 2002 that could save the country millions of dollars in damage. The King began testing the process for which he holds the patent three decades ago. Hua Hin is the original base where these techniques were first used. The centre’s target area was Kaeng Krachan Reservoir. The cloud-seeding sandwich technique involves the use of chemicals, such as sodium chloride or silver iodine, which are released into hot air clouds to stimulate rainfall. The super sandwich technique targeting both hot and cold air clouds at different altitudes.

His Majesty and Music - His Majesty created much joy with musical compositions, performances & broadcasts throughout his long reign. His Majesty composed more than 48 songs, ranging from blues, jazz and popular dance tunes to patriotic anthems and New Year celebrations. He showed a natural aptitude for music from early childhood and in his early teens he took up music with his elder brother King Rama VIII, while both were studying in Lausanne, Switzerland. The brothers enjoyed playing music together, forming a trio with their music teacher. His Majesty’s first musical instrument was a second-hand saxophone, and although he studied classical music on piano for several years, he showed an affinity for wind instruments, especially saxophones, trumpet and clarinet. Love At Sundown (Yam Yen) was written in 1946 and still popular today. Besides the saxophone, The King could play the guitar as well and in the 19 50´s, he formed a band called Wong Lai Kram (Vintage Band). Over the years, many of His Majesty’s songs and tunes have been performed by orchestras and musical ensembles on Broadway, in Europe and Japan. But perhaps his greatest legacy is the musical dialogue he kept with his subjects over his long reign. Music was one of His Majesty’s great passions and he viewed it as an important part of life.

King Bhumibol The Photographer - At age 8, Bhumibol Adulyadej got his first camera, a coronet midget – a tiny box camera that weighed only 71g. This light gadget sparked his lifelong passion for photography for the next eight decades. The Monarch was seldom seen without a camera hanging around his neck – at ceremonies, events and even after emerging from the hospital in a wheelchair. A camera was always among his essential travel items, along with a self-made map and a pencil with eraser – especially when he toured projects in rural Thailand. It aided him in capturing the country’s development. The King has taken photographs which have been useful for the development of the country such as appropriate locations for dams, reservoirs and dykes; photographs of villages and their surroundings and transportation routes. King Bhumobol was a skilled painter and a sailing champion, and an avid athlete. He participated in the 4th South East Asian Peninsula Games (now SEA Games) in 1967, winning a gold medal in the OK dinghy class in the sailing competition. One of his closest friends was King Baudouin of Belgium, with whom he maintained a long and intimate correspondence. His Majesty King Bhumibol is survived by Queen Sirikit, Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn and three daughters, Princesses Ubolratana, Sirindhorn and Chulabhorn.

MUSIC

BOB DYLAN The

Greatest Living Poet Bob Dylan wins Nobel literature prize Bob Dylan is one of the most influential singersongwriters of the 20th century whose career began with songs that chronicled social issues like war and civil rights. For almost 50 years, Bob Dylan has remained, along with James Brown, the most influential American musician rock & roll has ever produced. Inscrutable and unpredictable, Dylan has been both deified and denounced for his shifts of interest, while whole schools of musicians took up his ideas. His lyrics were the first in rock to be seriously regarded as literature and became so well known that politicians from Jimmy Carter to Vaclav Havel have cited them as an influence. By personalizing folk songs, Dylan reinvented the singersongwriter genre; by performing his allusive, poetic songs in his nasal, spontaneous vocal style with an electric band, he enlarged pop’s range and vocabulary while creating a widely imitated sound. By recording with Nashville veterans, he helped give rise to Seventies country-rock. In the 1980s and 1990s, although he often seemed to flounder, he still had the ability to challenge, influence, and surprise listeners, something he did more reliably in the late 1990s and 2000s, when he recorded some of the greatest music of his career. Born May 24th, 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota, Robert Allen Zimmerman’s family moved to Hibbing when he was six. After taking up guitar and harmonica, he formed the Golden Chords while a high school freshman. He enrolled at the arts college of the University of Minnesota in 1959; during his three semesters there, he began performing solo at coffeehouses as Bob Dylan; he legally changed his name in August 1962. The legendary singer-songwriter has received Grammy, Academy and Golden Globe awards, as well as the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Nobel Prize for Literature. 14

Initially the province was called “Phe-cha-buth” as “Phuenchapura”, which means the city that has plenty of crops. The reason for being given its name is because the province is very fertile and full of natural resources.

It was once the centre of contact between the Dvaravati Kingdom in the central plain basin and the Khmer Kingdom in the Northeast. A twincity, there were over one hundred ancient sites all built with bricks and laterite, most of them have since crumbled. There are also remains of several ponds spread out all over the area. Most of the ancient relics recovered are parts of architectural nature such as elaborate lintels, plastered designs and sema stone and human skeletons still are adorned with ornamental pieces. ETIREMENTS AU

BUREAU

5. Relâcher progressivement puis changer de côté

THAI NATURE

The

CITY PIGEON Columba Livia - Domestica

By Dr. George F. Grossniklaus

The City pigeon or Street Dove is a bird of the family of the doves (Columbidae doves and pigeons). They derived from feral house and homing pigeons, which were bred from the rock pigeon (Columba livia). From feral and semi-wild city pigeons, writings are reported already in the antiquity. Today they are widespread throughout the world.

T

he city pigeon has a body length of 31-34 cm. It is smaller than the wood pigeon and has a shorter tail. The plumage is very variable. Their shape is similar to that of the rock pigeon, often, also some of the numerous plumage variations look very much like the rock pigeon. Otherwise also white grey patterned, uniformly dark grey or dark brown, red-grey or dark color variations occur. The iris is red or brown. The voices expressed by both sexes is very variable and sounds roughly like “gúrr” or “guu-ru-gu.” The male serves with a deep, “gang-grrru-guruú-u”, which is sometimes uniformly arranged. In the first part of this motif, it bows , at last it straightens up again. At the nest, a long call is expressed in repetition, such as “ruhh”. The emergency call is a short, monosyllabic stressed “hu”. Other sounds are used to communicate among themselves. Loud or quiet clack sounds are generated with the goiter. By shaking, the feathers rubbing together and produce a sounds like a rustling noise. During the courtship flight the wings are slapped several times quickly, what is also the marking for the territory. The nestlings beg with light shades of “piep” during feeding. The cities all over the world are the habitat of city pigeons. But city pigeons occur also outside of cities, especially in areas altered by humans.

30

APPROACH November 2016

Their natural diet consists of various young plant sprouts, seeds of culture and wild plants, but also of snails, worms and insects. Stones are used for digestion of food in the stomach. To find forage they fly up to 20 km wide. City pigeons live today mainly in city centres, where there is an abundance of food by pigeon feeder. In the periphery of the cities, where more support power is required, the population density of the city pigeons decreases continuously. The overpopulation of city pigeons in the city centres by an oversupply of food, leads to contamination of buildings, monuments and parks. Also, it favours the appearance of

THAI NATURE various parasites and pathogens that can spread to humans. Females can mate at the age of five months. The first brood is already possible at the age of six months. The majority of city pigeons breeds in the second calendar year. Most of the time the The breeding pairs reside year-round in the breeding area. Males occupy a nest area that can contain several nesting sites and is kept mostly for life. He lures the female calling to the roost on ledges, inside caves, holes in cliffs or similar locations on buildings, sometimes in confined spaces, which are accessed through windows and the like. Partners usually live in lifelong monogamy. The nest is built by both sexes, and the male brings the nest material, and usually consists of a thin layer of twigs, roots, stems, springs, paper and plastic pieces, more rarely also from wire or similar. In large parts of the territory, the street pigeon is a major prey of peregrine falcons, of the owls, the sparrow hawk, the marten, as well as cats. City pigeons are pests in the animal welfare act, if they occur at high population densities, and can cause various problems. Pigeons can cary bacterial diseases (salmonellosis, Ornithosis, tuberculosis, cocci - and coli infections), Mycosis (aspergillosis, thrush) or suffer from viral diseases - pigeon pox, pigeon herpes, Paramyxovirusinfektion, ND, Circovirusinfektion, leukemia, Adenovirusinfektion. It is to be noted that most of these diseases and parasites are not specific to doves, but occur also in other birds such as songbirds, raptors, and poultry. Some of the carried diseases and parasites are not contagious for humans. The dry and crumbled to dust droppings of the pigeons are the most common source of contagion for people. Contamination with tuberculosis of the poultry is less difficult than a human tuberculosis or bovine tuberculosis, however, can be dangerous for severely immunocompromised persons. In many cities, huge efforts are undertaken to bird control operated to keep the number of pigeons low and and building pigeon-free.

The brood almost always consists of two eggs, sometimes one, seldom three. The eggs are spindle-shaped, shiny oval, white and light. They are 34-42 mm long and 26 to 31 millimeters wide. They will be laid at a timeframe of 48 hours and incubated for 17 to 18 days by both partners, starting from the first egg. After hatching the baby birds are initially fed by both partners with coiter milk. Under optimal conditions, also city pigeons can reach an age of more than 10 years. November 2016 APPROACH

BEDROOM

Design & Mattresses

W

e spend about a third of our life asleep, at least according to the statistics.

Soft colors are relaxing, so your room’s light source will feel less harsh and more like a sunset if it is softer.

Sometimes your bedroom decorating simply needs a change of atmosphere to make it more comfortable. A quick paint job maybe? It’s important that your bedroom still feels like home!

Mattress firmness, contrary to popular belief, doesn’t have to be hard to be good for you.

Get the television, the computer, and the treadmill out of the room. It can remind you of work, daily chores, or other to-do lists when this area should be associated with sleep and if you have a messy room, organize the room as best you can and remove all disorder and confusion.

How firm it is comes down to personal preference, as long as it does a good job of supporting your body. Medicalsounding terms, such as ‘orthopedic’ and ‘posturepedic’, don’t necessarily mean a mattress is better for you. There are no restrictions on the term ‘orthopedic mattress’, so any mattress can use that description.

Pocket sprung, latex, open coil, continuous coil... not sure which type of mattress is best for you? There are four main mattress types to choose from. Pocket sprung mattresses: In pocket sprung mattresses, the springs are sewn into individual fabric pockets. Pocket sprung mattresses are the most popular type of mattress. Pocket sprung mattresses don’t mould to your shape in the same way that memory foam mattresses do, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they offer less support. They also tend not to be as warm as memory foam mattresses, which could be an important consideration if you tend to find yourself too warm at night. Latex is a less common type of mattress which features a core made up of layers of springy latex. These mattresses tend to be more expensive, but manufacturers claim that they are more resilient and able to better keep their shape. They can be expensive, but there are some fantastic memory foam mattresses for reasonable prices.

came back last week after three weeks’ vacation in Ireland. My previous home before Thailand was right on the Irish border between the Republic and Great Britain a scene of many battles and much bitterness. Today the place has changed beyond recognition and it has returned to the beautiful land of my childhood. (And the weather was good) I am lucky enough to have an offshore bank where I keep savings in Sterling to finance vacations, e-bay purchases airline tickets etc.etc. To keep any more money other than running expenses and small savings in a bank account does not make economic sense as most investors realise. I have of course a Thai bank to finance my day to day living here in Thailand. All of these banks supply ATM cards and credit cards although SCB refused me a credit card saying I was too old. It made me salivate thinking of the lawsuit I would have back home if the bank said that. No such problem with Krungsri who happily gave me a credit card but I did not receive the pin number until I returned here-happy days. Over the past few years I had saved sterling in my offshore account and the average rate of exchange was around 50 baht per pound sterling. So a withdrawal of 500 from a sterling bank account was the equivalent of 25,000 baht over my savings time frame. The same 500 sterling withdrawal from my Thai bank account by ATM while on holiday was equivalent to 21,650 Thai Baht.

By Jerry Mcmenamin

So for me using my offshore sterling account was costing me an additional 6,600 baht per 1,000 GBP all because of the weakness of Sterling due to Brexit. For me this is small lesson in currency diversification. Most sterling investors I know are loath to diversify into Euros or US dollars never mind third world currencies Let’s say you are like myself a longtime Thai resident and your expenditure is mostly in Thailand. You have a managed portfolio and it has done well this year invested in British sterling denominated companies and the returns have shown a 6 percent gain. Unfortunately the currency has lost 10 per cent so you finish up with a 4 percent loss overall. The idea of currency diversification in a portfolio is not to make a profit but to eliminate currency risk.

THAI LEGAL

JUSTICE SYSTEM in Thailand

M

odern Thai law dates back to the reign of King Rama V (1868-1910). Prince Rapee Pattanasak, is considered to be the father of the modern Thai legal system.

The legal system in Thailand has been described as a civil law system with common law influences. According to the Library of Congress: A large part of the modern legal system is made up of criminal, civil, and commercial codes adopted from the British and other European legal systems. Some “borrowed” from India, Japan, China, and the US.

original jurisdiction in cases involving the removal or revocation of the right to vote of members of the National Assembly. Persons Holding Political Positions cases brought by, or against, members of the National Counter Corruption Commission. Will be handled by The Supreme Court of Justice.

THE COURTS OF JUSTICE Courts of Justice adjudicate all cases except where otherwise specified in the Constitution or other laws. There are three levels of Courts of Justice: Courts of First Instance, Courts of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Justice. Judges in the Courts of Justice are appointed and removed by the King with the approval of the Judicial Commission of the Courts of Justice.

THE COURTS OF FIRST INSTANCE Covering both criminal and civil cases with limited jurisdiction, the Courts operate with a single judge and deal with small matters and petty cases and are characterized by speedy trials and oral or summarized judgments. The First Instance Courts in the Kingdom are the Bangkok Courts & 96 Provincial Courts.

THE COURTS OF APPEAL The Courts of Appeal consist of the Court of Appeal and nine regional Courts of Appeal. They have jurisdiction to hear and adjudicate appeals from judgments and orders of the Courts of First Instance, and can hear appeals on both questions of law and fact. The judgment of the Courts of Appeal in most cases is final. A quorum of three judges generally hears each appeal.

THE SUPREME COURT OF JUSTICE The Supreme Court of Justice has jurisdiction to hear and adjudicate appeals from the Courts of Appeal and from the specialized courts of the Courts of First Instance. The Supreme Court can hear appeals on questions of law and, in certain cases, on questions of fact. The Supreme Court of Justice has 36

There are no jury trials in Thailand. A single judge decides trials for misdemeanors; two or more judges were required for more serious cases. Regulations outlined in the Criminal Code require public prosecutors to rely exclusively on the recommendations of the police when determining whether to bring a case forward for criminal prosecution. The accused are often forced to wear orange prison uniforms and shackles around their ankles during their trials. In some cases they are kept behind bars in the courtroom in cage-like holding cells. Civil Courts have the power to try and adjudicate civil cases and other cases that are not in the jurisdiction of other courts of justice. It is left to the court’s discretion whether to admit the cases for trial and adjudication or to transfer them to other courts of justice that have jurisdiction. Criminal Courts have the power to try and adjudicate all criminal cases in Bangkok Metropolis. Military Court tries and adjudicates cases involving persons within its jurisdiction, as prescribed by the Act for the Organization of the Military Court.

FINANCIAL

EUROPEAN MARKETS 2016 E

uropean markets have started 2016 poorly. The concerns that were already mounting in the second half of 2015 have actually worsened. American politics seem a worry but European politics are also getting worse. Economic data has not been too bad, but it also has not pointed to an acceleration of growth, which might normally have been the case given the scale of monetary stimulus measures. Indeed, the increasing trend towards negative interest rates opens up a Pandora’s Box of scary scenarios, especially for banks. In the world of company results, recent reports have been satisfactory – a word that is deliberately meant to imply “good enough for now”. A case could be made that everything is ticking along, provided you have patience. That, sadly, is where it all starts to go a bit wrong. Very few investors have enough patience any more, especially among fast-moving exchange-traded funds (ETFs), commodity trading advisors (CTAs) and high-frequency trading (HFTs). Furthermore, if quantitative easing (QE) is no longer working, or can’t do enough, what will? In fact, there may be more that central banks can do, and the better – admittedly still not great – fiscal position of governments may mean that we could see further moderate stimulus efforts.

But it all boils down to a lack of progress in Europe. The region is forecasted to grow at about 1.5% in 2016, while the US is also dull, China is slowing and Emerging Markets are slower. It is what we have all been warned to expect for some time: a world of persistently low growth. So what is happening? Evidence suggests that we are seeing a process of acclimatisation for markets – bonds and equities. This also explains the violent rotation between sectors (look at UK mining companies, or oil stocks). Eventually we will, probably, settle into this new reality of subdued growth. Is that a terrible scenario? Not necessarily. It is possible to find growth in a low growth world. This can be driven by companies, individuals or governments looking to improve efficiency and out-source certain areas of their operations. Another obvious source of growth is demographics – healthcare and the need for individuals to save for their own retirement.

REAL RISKS

BENEFITS OF

EVERYDAY PLEASURES “No pleasure is worth giving up for the sake of living two more years in a retirement home some of us may say! How do you compare the dangers of eating a burger with that of sitting watching TV or enjoying a few glasses of wine? We shouldn’t be tempted to think that a virtue can offset a vice: no matter how much fruit you eat, a 20-a-day smoking habit will still send you to an early grave. But it does at least help put some of our lifestyle choices in perspective. Despite the recent health scares around the modern lifestyle, comparing your lifespan with that of your grandparents shows us just how lucky we are to live in the 21st Century. We live about 13 years longer than our grandparents born in 1910!

However : »» Smoking about 20 cigarettes a day reduces your lifespan by at least 7 years. Each cigarette that you smoke costs you 15 minutes of your life. »» 2 – 3 cups of coffee buys you an extra year of life – 10 minutes extra lifespan per cup »» Working out – exercising for 20 minutes a day gives you 1 extra hour of life – so you buy 1 and get 3. »» Being a male comes at a cost as men live on average 4 years less than women!

Getting tired of what is good or bad for you take a look at this: Food danger zones aren’t so self-evident. You know candy bars aren’t doing you any favours, and you can’t eat butter by the spoonful. But there are plenty of other products that seem entirely harmless - in fact, most are marketed as healthy, or at least as less-bad-for-you alternatives to other foods. That means they must be okay— The truth is more unfortunate: US federal guidelines leave it up to the food manufacturers to decide if a food is safe and “safe” doesn’t mean “good for you.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

APPROACH magazine identified 7“seemingly innocent” foods that should be placed on your personal “Try to avoid”: Microwave Popcorn Popcorn can be healthy: When air-popped, this snack has filling fiber and whole-grains we love, but the microwaveable varieties are an entirely different beast. Many major brands line their bags with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), the same stuff found in teflon pots and pans; some studies have linked it to infertility, weight gain, and impaired learning! Butter-flavored popcorn is almost always laced with diacetyl (DA), a chemical that has been found to break down the layer of cells that protects one of our most vital organs: the brain. Now that’s some scary stuff!

Colorful Candy Yes, all sugar can turn your charming little toddler into a home destructo unit. But not all candies are created equal. While chocolate bars may be doing your child no favours, some candies may be causing real harm. The artificial colours Yellow No. 5 and Yellow No. 6 promote Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) in children. In Norway and Sweden they have banned the use of these artificial colours. Nestle stepped up to the plate and announced that by the end of 2015, the company will have phased out the use of all artificial dyes. Good news, the sugar remains.

Jelly and Jam with Added Sugars – It deprives Your Body of Nutrients Oh, come on! The nice lady at the green farmer’s market swore these were all-natural, and made from raspberries grown right in her own garden! Ok, we believe her, but the nice farmer lady then took her raspberries and added in, a heaping cup of sugar and another significant ingredient, pectin, a natural fruit fiber that makes the spread nice and sticky. What’s so bad about a natural fiber? Well, just as it causes jelly to stick to your fingers, pectin also sticks to health-boosting antioxidants like beta-carotene, lycopene and lutein, carrying them out of your system before your body can benefit from them.

Diet Sodas - It is Linked to Obesity What do synthetic estrogen, flame retardants and rocket fuel all have in common? They can all be found in a can of your favorite diet soda. BPA, the synthetic estrogen, is used to soften the plastic that lines the can; colas contain caramel coloring shown to cause cancer in humans; and citrus-flavored sodas contain BVO, a flame retardant used in rocket fuel that may reduce fertility and negatively affect thyroid hormones. Nearly all popular diet sodas contain aspartame, an artificial sweetener that raises glucose levels, overloading the liver and causing the excess to convert into fat. While Coca-Cola and PepsiCo have agreed to phase BVO out of their sodas, it’s still actively used in sodas from Dr. Pepper/Seven Up Inc. Even so, all these drinks contain aspartame, and that’s just not something we can get behind. If you’re sick of plain H20, opt for unsweetened tea or coffee instead.

Fortified Kids’ Cereal - The Vitamins Are Fake, but the Sugar Is Real Most kids’ cereals are fortified, primarily with sugar. The vitamins and minerals touted on the box? They’re sprayed on at the end, and most of them wash off in the milk (drink the milk, kids!). And all those bright colors? They come from such wholesome, natural ingredients as Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) or BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole), ingredients that are banned in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and much of Europe because they are thought to be carcinogenic. Check the label, and ban anything with these chemicals from your child’s breakfast.

Coffee Creamer - Will Raise your Cholesterol Coffee creamer and Sunblock have more in common that you would think. As it turns out, they both contain titanium dioxide, an ultraviolet radiation blocker that doubles as a whitening agent. packed with trans-fats, often hiding under the guise of its lesser-known name: hydrogenated oil, which not only raises cholesterol but has been shown to diminish memory in adults under 45 years old. The additive has been proven to cause liver and tissue damage in humans. Coffee creamer is one ingredient you should steer clear of. Eat This Instead: Plain ol’ cow’s milk or unsweetened, organic soy milk

Processed Meats - It Bloats Your Belly—and Your Diabetes Risk Many brands of bacon, sausage, hot dogs and deli meats contain nitrates, a preservative that interferes with the body’s natural ability to process sugar, which increases the risk for diabetes. It can also increase up your odds of thyroid and colon cancer. If that wasn’t bad enough, most processed meats are also loaded with sodium, a known contributor to hypertension that can make you bloat and set you up to develop heart disease. ducate The Kids actively seeks out opportunities to educate the poorest children, those that without help would have no hope. We believe that ALL children are entitled to an education, which can free them from poverty. We know that with your help we can do more. Eighteen years ago whilst on vacation in Kenya, Maureen and her husband made a decision to visit a deprived area called Utange that would literally change not only their lives but the lives of their entire family and close friends! Hearing about POVERTY and HUNGER is totally different than seeing it first hand and needless to say they were incredibly moved by the families they met who were living with little HOPE for the future, in mud huts that often got washed away in the Rainy Season‌

KIDS & EDUCATION EDUCATE THE KIDS was born (initially The Samson Chivatsi African Children’s Appeal) and since 1998 Maureen has worked passionately on a purely VOLUNTARY basis bringing about a complete TRANSFORMATION to the lives, aspirations and individual potential across 6 Villages. The core of Maureen’s work has been securing land and building a primary school which she named Jolaurabi after her three grandchildren. The school now provides EDUCATION for 600 SPONSORED children annually who without this would not ever have been able to receive any formal education. Maureen has also secured sponsorship currently for a further 100 secondary pupils. However, despite being an exceptional achievement in its own right, it is what Maureen has done through sheer hard work and inexhaustible drive to create, support and embed this education, which is even more exceptional. The Charity’s success in providing for the needs of these children and their community in a robust and sustainable way gives

them a unique opportunity to make a better life for themselves. Maureen has developed a deep understanding and connection with the needs of this Community and her initial goal was to build a school and to ensure the children were able to focus on learning and not on their hunger, she established a feeding programeach child received a cup of porridge every morning. Kenyan vaccination officers recently praised the school for having the healthiest children in any of the schools they had visited. Motivating many hundreds of supporters who continually fundraise on a voluntary basis has been a key to the charities success, and Maureen and educate the kids recognise that a little help from many can achieve a great deal. Many of these volunteers have visited the school to offer practical

help with building work and develop a personal link with the community, all of course at their own expense. In the final year of primary the children sit a government set exam to see if they qualify for secondary school. At present we have around 100 children sponsored in secondary school. This costs about THB 850 per month.

Editors note: The prices quoted below were supplied by the car dealers and are for standard version with stick shift gearboxes. All vehicles are able to run on E20 Gasohol. Some are equipped for E85 gasohol. However, E20 will make the engine consume about 10% more fuel than 91 petrol. E85 turns your vehicle into a guzzler with a consume increase of approx. 30%. E85 is known to have a 25-30% higher calorific value than the more conventional counterparts. However, motorists using E20 and E85 will still spend significantly less money on fuel compared with pure gasoline for a filling, while contributing to a cleaner environment and a more sustainable future.

Thailand's top compact cars compared Nissan Almera - ฿ 429,000.-

Although the Almera is powered by a small 1.2-litre 3 cylinder engine like the Nissan March, it isn’t a small car at all. The Almera measures 4,425mm in length, 1,695mm in width and 1,500mm in height, while the wheelbase is 2,600mm (150mm longer than the March). These are dimensions that are comparable to subcompacts, in fact it is as wide as, and even longer than the Mazda2. The Nissan Almera is powered by a 1198cc. 3 cylinder engine producing 78 hp. The average highway mileage is approx. 23.2 km/l. at 100kmh. City Mileage 15.8 km/l. Top speed is 170 kmh. The rear luggage compartment can carry up to a 490l. load.

Mazda 2 - ฿ 529,000.-

Mazda 2 available in both the body styles; sedan and hatchback has given exterior detailing that clearly states a sense of forward momentum and adequate energy packed within. The basic structural layout of this car is based under the theme ‘’Design Cody Kondo” to give it a compact shape. The Mazda 2 is powered by a 1299cc. 4 cylinder engine producing 92 Hp. The average highway mileage is approx. 21 km/l. at 100kmh. Top speed is 170 kmh. The rear luggage compartment can carry up to a 450 l. load.

Toyota Yaris - ฿ 549,000.-

The Yaris does a solid job in most areas, but doesn’t really dazzle in any, either. That said, it’s well equipped, easy to drive and should be faultlessly reliable. If that’s what you want from your next supermini, the Yaris fits the bill. It is one of the safest cars in its class thanks to every model coming with driver, passenger, side, curtain and driver’s knee airbags to give a total of seven. The Toyota Yaris is powered by a 1197cc. 4 cylinder engine producing 84.5 hp. The average highway mileage is approx. 18.7 km/l. at 100kmh. City Mileage 15.2 km/l. Top speed is 140 kmh. The rear luggage compartment can carry up to a 230l. load. 48

Honda Brio - ฿ 436,500.-

The Honda Brio is available with a 5-speed Manual and a 5-speed automatic transmission The Brio’s easy to use nature also translates to a comfortable ride quality both up front and in the rear. The car isn’t as precise when it comes to handling but then it doesn’t wallow about like a sand barge either. That said, it still can and will out handle almost everything else in its category while managing to feel as stable as a rock even at well over triple digit speeds. In the city, this setup actually makes it a delight to drive on your daily commute to and fro from work. The Honda Brio is powered by a 1198cc. 4 cylinder engine producing 89 hp. The average highway mileage is approx. 16.1 km/l. at 100kmh. City Mileage 12.5 km/l. Top speed is 140 kmh. The rear luggage compartment can carry up to a 430l. load.

MG 3 - ฿ 479,000.-

The MG3 is a small five-door hatchback designed to compete with the likes of the Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris and Suzuki Swift. But unlike those cars, it majors on value for money. Despite this, it’s good fun to drive. That’s thanks almost entirely to its sharp steering the huge amount of grip it provides when cornering. It’s not perfect, though, because the suspension is firm enough to make even the keenest of drivers wince when driving along a bumpy road and its 1.5-litre engine lacks a bit of power. The MG 3 is powered by a 1198cc. 4 cylinder engine producing 106 hp. The average highway mileage is approx. 16.1 km/l. at 100kmh. City Mileage 12.5 km/l. Top speed is 140 kmh. The rear luggage compartment can carry up to a 285l. load.

Ford Fiesta - ฿ 554,000.-

If you’re after a small supermini, then you can’t really go wrong with the Ford Fiesta. It looks great, drives brilliantly and has a fantastic range of engines that brilliantly combine performance and fuel economy. It’s easy to see why more Fiestas have been sold in the UK than any other model in history. The Ford Fiesta is powered by a 1498cc. 4 cylinder engine producing 110 hp. The average highway mileage is approx. 15.6 km/l. at 100kmh. City Mileage 11.4 km/l. Top speed is 167 kmh. The rear luggage compartment can carry up to a 290l. load.

Suzuki Swift - ฿ 442,000.-

The Suzuki Swift is a fun small car that appeals on many levels. The low price, great handling and smart styling help to set it apart in the supermini market. Whether you want a car to just pop to the shops in or to take on a twisty B-road. This is a very compact car by class standards, so it’s a doddle to handle around town. Visibility is great, too, with what seems like a wall of glass wrapped around the car, making parking a piece of cake. The Suzuki Swift is powered by a 1242cc. 4 cylinder engine producing 89 hp. The average highway mileage is approx. 20.4 km/l. at 100kmh. City Mileage 14.9 km/l. Top speed is 159 kmh. The rear luggage compartment can carry up to a 211l. load.
