Editor in Chief Gerard Mosselman Regardless of the main mourning period slackened on November 14th, Hotels and Event companies showed further respect by sticking to the 100 days. Internationally there is news with the handing over of the US presidency to Mr. Trump. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt as barking dogs hardly bite and we are all in for a bit of change as the world is indulged in a lot of atrocities and terrorism.

Office Manager Pimwee P. (Kob) Graphic Office Thaiso Media ™

Surely tourist number have not fallen in Thailand and the authorities show increased movement in comparison to last year. However is the purchasing power of our eastern neighbours any comparison to western tourists? I doubt it. Hotel occupancies have dropped in comparison to the same period last year. So where are all those tourist staying? Mind you, total tourism is composed of foreign visitors and Thai weekenders. The Bluport Mall is amazingly large and according to some shop owners, well visited, not only during weekends. Sadly there is no Homepro similar warehouse. Annoying is the fact that some restaurants add 10% service tax and 7% VAT to their published prices which increases the cost of their food by 17%. Sizzler and Burger King do not. Food courts are superb as my favourite Duck meat is available ! Our deep appreciation goes out to our advertisers and loyal readers. We hope to be able to serve you in 2017 as well. APPROACH wishes its readers happy festive days, whatever your believe may be. Peace on earth among mankind is more important than economic growth.

MUSIC

HIS MAJESTY & His Music

King Bhumibol Adulyadej

An accomplished musician and composer

I

t has been said that King Bhumibol Adulyajej’s genius and passion for artistic pursuits can be traced back to his father, H.R.H. Prince Mahidol of Songkla. In matters of music, His Majesty had shown a natural aptitude for it since his early childhood. During his stay in Lausanne as the royal younger brother, he took up various musical instruments and studied music with great dedication. In the early stages of his music education, the King rehearsed and learned by notation and concentrated on classical music exclusively for about two years. In so doing, he opted for the wind instruments, particularly the saxophone and clarinet. Afterwards, he switched over to playing jazz music which gave him more freedom at improvising, as befitting his preference for fast, exciting jazz beats. His Majesty began to compose songs in earnest when he turned 18 years old, and the person who both encouraged him and became his inspiration was none other than his royal brother King Ananda Mahidol. In April 1946, King Bhumibol Adulyadej composed his first-ever song, a blues, under the title of “Candlelight Blues.” But he had yet to go public with it, feeling that he still needed to polish the tune for better effect. As a result, the first royal song released to the Thai public was “Love at Sundown”. A man of energy and initiative, His Majesty King Bhumibol always found time and opportunities to make music and shared his musical passion with all concerned. His Majesty composed more than 48 songs, ranging from blues, jazz and popular dance tunes to patriotic anthems and New Year celebrations Internationally, His Majesty’s compositions have been featured by world-class orchestras at concerts on various important occasions, such as the Madrid Classical Orchestra of Spain, NHK Band of Japan, and Broadway theaters in the United States. During his 1960 state visit to the United States of America, His Majesty encountered many an opportunities to stamp his musical virtuosity diplomatically. In New York, he had great fun on the saxophone when he jammed with Benny Goodman on the clarinet, a renowned jazz king and band leader. Among his best known compositions: Candlelight Blues ( Saeng Thian) – Love at Sundown (Yam Yen) – Falling Rain ( Sai Fon) - Near Dawn (Klai Rung) – Sweet Words ( Kham Wan) among many others.

Bubbly Seaside Brunch at Putahracsa Having heard many positive remarks about the Bubbly Brunch at the Putahracsa, we decided to join the Sunday Brunch. It was a very pleasant surprise as the setting, to start off with, is right at the ocean front. Especially in the “cooler months, the fresh ocean breeze adds to brunching comfort. It definitely was an exotic Sunday Brunch experience. The brunch buffet offered a variety of Seafood, Oysters, Alaskan King Crabs, Prawns, Sushis and Foie Gras among many different western and Thai dishes. Upon arrival Caviar Canapes and a free flow of wine or Thai appetizers were served with your meal. Plenty of pastry from their own bakery and lovely live music made the whole atmosphere very relaxed. Our compliments to Chef Karsten Seyfert and his team, F&B Manager Nuch Peeraphap and Pastry Chef Alexandre Fonnteneau. This brunch experience was one of the best we have experienced in greater Hua Hin!

Bubbly Brunch is priced at 1,699 Baht net/person, every Sunday between 12.00 and 15.00 hrs. It is recommendable to book in advance as the restaurant was fully booked out. 14

HAT YAI

& KOH LIPE

A

bout an 8 hour drive from Hua Hin, Hat Yai is located in the extreme southern part of Thailand, just about 45 minutes by car away from the Malaysian border. Hat Yai is full of hotels, markets, food stalls, shopping malls, and nightlife, so it’s a terrific place to stay the night before you travel onwards to get to Koh Lipe or other southern destinations. It has become a modern, rapidly growing commercial city by virtue of its position on the major road south to Malaysia and on the junction of the eastern and western branches of the Bangkok-Singapore railroad. It also has an international airport. Hat Yai is a centre of the rubber industry and the site of the governmental Rubber Research Centre. 16

APPROACH December 2016

TRAVEL IN THAILAND There are many things to do around Hat Yai which are worthwhile doing whilst you are there.

Chang Puak Camp for example is an elephant show with two main elephants performing magic tricks and acrobatics. In the show, children are asked to participate in the performances, adding fun and excitement. Nowadays, tourists have come to visit Chang Puak Camp more frequently and especially on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In the near future, a shooting lawn will be constructed. Also, there are plans to develop the trekking route and open up the daily elephant shows creating more fun experience for visitors.

The Khlong Hae Floating Market, where vendors pack their wares onto small boats and jostle with each other for the attention of buyers alongside canals. There is a large number of vendors selling a big variety of local Thai food and snacks. The market also has a campaign for the environment as the sellers use bamboo tubes, coconut shells and clay pots instead of using plastic bags or foam boxes. The market is quite different from the Amphawa Floating Market as the vendors wear a hijab because most of local people are muslims.

The Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Natural History Museum is divided into 2 zones which are the exhibition zone where permanent and temporary exhibitions are displayed and reference collection zones where development of the universe, the earth, its plant and animal life, together with their biology and ecology are collected in order to research, educate and promote interest and knowledge. It

exhibits everything from mammals to pollen, plus rocks and minerals. These collections are considered to be among the largest collections in Thailand and certain sub-collections are unique. Among these are the butterfly collection and aquatic fauna collections. The Butterfly collection contains more than 800 species of approximately 1000 species known in Thailand, and includes rare, endangered, and extinct species. There are plenty of hotel choices in Hat Yai. We stayed at the New Season Square Hotel for THB 1.800 a night with ABF. A very nice experience with friendly staff and very clean rooms. The Hotel is centrally located in town, close to the, main shopping area. If you are going to Koh Lipe from Hat Yai, the mini-bus station has moved outside of the city centre. Transfer to Pak Bara is about 180 baht, however,

the driver waits until the bus is full which could delay your departure. Ferries and speedboats leave daily (certain periods) from Pak Bara to Koh Lipe and they depart from 10:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. A one-way trip will cost you 650 Thai baht and a roundtrip will cost you 1,200. You can buy your tickets in Pak Bara. Be very careful if you decide to purchase your speedboat or ferry ticket to Koh Lipe from the Hat Yai mini-bus station, as they are notorious for selling you false tickets and providing incorrect information. Wait to buy your boat or ferry tickets until you get to Pak Bara just to be safe.

Koh Lipe, in the Andaman sea, is famous for its white sandy beaches and turquoise blue waters, The speedboat crossing costs THB 650 for adults and 500 for kids 3 – 10 years old and the crossing takes 1 ½ hours. Cont..

Ko Lipe is surrounded by uninhabited islands of the Butong Archipelago. The island is home to about 500 Chao Ley, or Sea Gypsies, who were given a grant to half of the island and live in small villages, predominantly around the Far East side of the island near Sunrise Beach. The name “Ko Lipe” means “Paper Island” in the local Chao Ley language. All of Ko Lipe can be covered on foot, although its size at first can be a little deceiving. There are no cars on the island. Long-tail boats will take you from any point on the island to any other point on the island for 50 baht. Small concrete roads link the various beaches. The calm, clear water makes the Ko Lipe area ideal for snorkelling, with 25% of the world’s tropical fish species found in the area. There are large varieties of fish around the coral just 20 m off all of the beaches. Ko Lipe is surrounded by over 30 islands and hundreds of reefs all within easy reach of the island. the reefs and the islands surrounding Ko Lipe are in very good condition. Nowhere else on the Southeast Asian peninsula will you find so many excellent snorkel sites so easily reached. If you fancy diving for a shipwreck adventure, the Yong Hua Shipwreck is a must! In 1996, a fish-factory ship anchored near the western end of Ko Lipe caught fire and sank in about 40 m of water.. The shipwreck has become a very interesting place to dive. The top of the wreck is at about 26 m sitting on its keel that is at 40 m. We rented a kayak from various spots on the beach and spend the day or two seeing the island and reef. Make sure your head is covered as the sun plays it´s merciless game. We choose to stay at the Castaway Resort on Sunrise Beach, paid THB 9,600 for 3 nights including breakfast. Lodging is in spacious air-conditioned wooden bungalows with large chill out decks overlooking the beach. There are way more expensive resorts and way cheaper ones as well…all

the way to guest lodges for THB 600 a night (Adang Sea Eco Lodge). There are nice Cafés and Restaurants on Koh Lipe….such as the Flour Power Bakery on Sunset Beach, next to the Sabye Divers. Their banana cakes and western breakfast is real nice. Jack’s Jungle, inland between Sunset and Sunrise beaches (inland). A really lovely spot when you want to get off the beach and eat surrounded by nice cool, green jungle. The Thai food is fantastic (especially the coconut soups) and you can order mild to Thaistyle spicy. The banana-lime pancakes are especially great. Pancake Lady at the island centre). The best pancakes in Thailand. Choose from fillings like coconut, banana, and chocolate. Delicious smoothies sold in plastic cups. This is one of the Thai nature experiences which excludes city life, motor vehicles and hectivity. A very relaxing holiday full of adventure and crystal clear waters, close to nature.

MATELAS EN LATEX NATURELS By Florent Ducret

L

THAI NATURE

The

Wing Plant Tree Dipterocarpaceae

By Dr. George F. Grossniklaus

The wing plants (Dipterocarpaceae) are a family in the order of the Malvales (Malvales). Fossil finds have existed at least since the Tertiary (Tertiary is the former term for the geologic period from 66 million to 2.58 million years ago). It must be assumed that at least in the north of India extensive fields have already been covered with trees from this family in the Eocene (The Eocene Epoch, lasting from 56 to 34 million years ago, is a major division of the geological timescale).

Description They are usually evergreen trees, some species loose part of their leaves during the dry season. Some species are very resinous. There are small trees, but some species are the largest trees in the Asian lowland rainforests. Typical for most species is their high straight, (at least to 10 m height) unbranched trunk. Often the bark is cracked. The alternating, stemmed leaves are simple, full-rimmed and leathery. The hermaphroditic, radial symmetrical flowers are fivefold; They are mostly large. For each flower there are five calyx and petals, mostly 15 (5 to 110) stamens and two to three adorned (synkarpe) fruit leaves. The fruit node is superficial, each fruit node contains two to four seed plants. It consists of solitary cones with woody pericarp (nuts). The sepals remain intact, and often two to five grow during maturity. The fruits are enveloped by the usually two to five enlarged sepals, they are the typical long wings (name of the whole family!). The trees form the typical board roots, as found in many tropical trees. Some species form the top floor of the rainforests, the lower part of the stems rarely have branches, at their tip they usually form only a sparse crown. Pollination is usually carried out by insects. 30

APPROACH December 2016

Usage Kinds of this family of trees dominate the original Asian rainforests. They form hardwood (also known as Keruing). These species are the main reason for the overexploitation in the Indo-Malay jungles. For example, their wood accounts for

THAI NATURE 85% of the Indonesian timber trade. One tries to re-establish these kinds again. Use of the often abundantly produced resin (in Borneo it is called “damar”). It is used, for example, for dyeing in batik and as a binder for water-soluble paints. Damma resin from the South Asian species Vateria indica supplies raw material for binders in lacquers and varnishes, embedding agents for microscopic specimens and for plasters. Gurjana balm and gyjun balsam oil are obtained from the wing tree species (Dipterocarpus), other names for the products are: Gardian or Gardschan balsam, East Indian Kopaivabalsam. A cavity is formed in the trunk of the tree, and a fire is lit. As a result, the leakage of gurjunbalsam is stimulated. It is a raw material for perfume.

northern SouthAmerica to Malaysia. The greatest diversity of Dipterocarpaceae occurs in Borneo. Some species are now endangered as a result of overcutting, extensive illegal logging and habitat conversion. They providevaluable woods, aromatic essential oils, balsam, resins and are a source for plywood.

Ecology Mast years are a phenomenon that occurs in species of this family, but also in other tree families. Trees of the same kind bloom at the same time and produce fruits for a few months. This has far-reaching consequences for the ecosystem, as at this time the pollinating insects are growing rapidly, which in turn form the source of food for other animals. The fruiteaters also multiply. In the following years, no or very few fruits are produced. The advantage for the plants is that, although the fruit-eaters are satisfied, the high number of seeds and seedlings remain, which ensure the survival of the species. It is known that this phenomenon is triggered by the ENSO events (El Niño / Southern Oscillation). By cutting the old fruit trees, this part of the ecosystem is no longer intact.

A recent genetic study found that the Asian dipterocarps share a common ancestor with the Sarcolaenaceae, a tree family endemic to Madagascar. This suggests that ancestor of the Dipterocarps originated in the southern supercontinent of Gondwana (Gondwana, also Gondwanaland or rare Gondwania. and that the common ancestor of the Asian dipterocarps and the Sarcolaenaceae was found in the IndiaMadagascar-Seychelles land mass millions of years ago, and were carried northward by India, which later collided with Asia and allowed the dipterocarps to spread across Southeast

For example, in low altitudes between 0 and about 750 meters, the lowland dipterocarpace mixed forests are the most diverse and ecologically most complex forests of Brunei, 13 to 24% of the trees are Dipterocarpace species.

Distribution They have a predominantly paleo trophic spread, more rarely occur in the Neo tropic. They have a focus on biodiversity in the Indo-Malayan region. Dipterocarpaceae are a family of 16 genera and approximately 695 known species of mainly tropical lowland rainforest trees. Many are large forest emergent species, typically reaching heights of 40–70 m, some even over 80 m, with the tallest known living specimen (Shorea faguetiana) 88.3 m tall. The species of this family are of major importance in the timber trade. Their distribution is pantropical, from

Asia and Malaysia. The first dipterocarp pollen has been found in Myanmar (which at that time was part of the Indian plate) and it dates from the upper Oligocene (The Oligocene is a geologic epoch of the Paleogene Period and extends from about 33.9 million to 23 million years before the present (33.9±0.1 to 23.03±0.05 Ma or Myr = million years ago). The sample appears to slowly increase in terms of diversity and abundance across the region into the mid-Miocene (The Miocene is the first geological epoch of the Neogene Period and extends from about 23.03 to 53.32 million years ago, Ma) Chemical traces of dipterocarp resins have been found dating back to the Eocene of India. Mike Drenic

VINYL WOODEN FLOORING Mike is an ex-chef, now happily residing in Hua Hin, along with his lovely wife Meow and their 2 daughters, Amy and Nan. Vinyl Wooden Flooring is a specialist local company offering a wide range of Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT). Mike’s had 16 successful years at Mars Incorporated, where he managed the countries of Croatia, Bosnia and Hezegovina.

Jerry - “At 62, isn’t it time to slow

down and start taking it easy?” Mike smiles and replies with a short curt “No”

Jerry - “So where did the name come

from?”

Mike - “Its all about search engine results. People usually look for a specific product range rather than a brand”. Jerry - “And the logo?” Mike - “That’s the work of James, a good and talented friend and signifies the textured grain of natural wood” Jerry - “So where can LVT be used” Mike - “It meant for indoor use and can be applied to almost any location, however we would recommend a click interlocking system in bathrooms or kitchens” Jerry - “Compared to traditional floor coverings, what are the benefits” Mike - “First of all, the companies pricing structure is extremely competitive, when compared to the full installation cost of ceramic, laminate, engineered or solid wooden floorings, It’s a simple to install, low maintenance

product and can be used in the smallest of rooms, all the way through to high class locations such a large reception areas and private residences. When used along with our extensive range of skirting, edgings and thresholds, the end result will be stunning”.

Jerry - “What are some of the areas people need to seriously consider when thinking of either new or replacement flooring” Mike - “Floors is Thailand are faced with 3 serious issues. The 1st being dampness caused by poor plumbing or drainage, the 2nd being the quality of the sub-floor and the 3rd is termite infestation. LVT is Vinyl. It’s a plastic that many people of my generation, fell in love with during the pre- CD/ DVD era, when our favourite vinyl records spun on a turntable and we listened, through the clicks, scratches and needle jumps, to such greats as The Beatles, The Stones and Led Zeppelin. Vinyl is used in hundreds of every day products from window frames, water pipes and conduit, to intravenous bags, mouthpieces and ear-plugs. It’s become a part of our lives and we couldn’t live without it. It’s water proof, non-hazardous and termites won’t ever develop a taste for vinyl.

Jerry - “What’s meant by “thickness” and “wear layer”. Mike - “LVT is made in thicknesses of 1.5mm-7mm with wear layers of 0.1mm-0.7mm. We never recommend a thickness of less than 3mm, unless the floor is as flat as a glass table-top. A 0.1mm – 0.2mm wear layer could easily scratch and therefore our standard application is 3mm / 0.3mm. Where the client intends to use LVT in heavy traffic areas, such as lounges and reception areas, we suggest a 0.5mm to 0.7mm wear layer. It’s far better to invest in a thicker wear layer than a thick plank with a thin wear layer. Jerry - “Tell me about the “click System” Mike “We believe that the Unlin “Uniclic” system is one of the best around. It offers a fast, adhesive-free installation that can be taken up if subsequently required. Uniclic starts from 4mm / 0.3mm and above and where the client wishes a 5mm LVT tile, we insert a fibreglass layer for added structural stability, with the added benefit of soundproofing. All products carry a generous warranty period, as well as being manufactured to EU and USA accreditation standards.

Jerry - “So what’s the secret to 1st class installation?’

Jerry - “So how does the client find out more”

Mike - “It’s all about floor preparation. If it’s free from dampness, undulations, cracks and dust, the floor has more chance of being perfect. Get the preparation wrong and the floor is heading for future problems. There are great self-levelling compounds and adhesives available in Thailand which can help ensure a perfect finish.

Mike - “Just give the company a call or send us an email, after which Meow and Pa will handle the rest. The company offers free samples, inspections, surveys and quotations, without obligation. With a wide selection of products, we’re sure we can transform any ordinary location into a stunningly attractive room.”

MONEY AFFAIRS

Be Aware of the Legal Scams L

egal watchdog the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) UK is warning savers about the growing danger of investment scams which boost their credibility by operating under the cover of law firms.

By Jerry Mcmenamin

Sports agent Mel Goldberg, of Mel Goldberg Law, was struck off the solicitors roll for a range of breaches.

It says the huge losses it has come across have led to people losing at least £100 million in cons that offer big returns to people putting their money into schemes involving the likes of rare earth minerals, carbon credits, agricultural rights, leases on hotel rooms, holiday homes not yet built, films or precious gems. The investments frequently turn out to be bogus but lure savers in by appearing more legitimate as they use regulated law firms as middlemen. This is often highlighted in promotional materials to make the projects seem trustworthy and safe. Its current caseload totals losses of over £100 million. These cons aren’t new and were a particular issue around 20 years ago until a crackdown. But the SRA has now seen reports double in the last 18 months. Among recent prosecutions are Mandeep Dhariwal, of Lawcomm Solicitors, who was fined £40,000 and ordered to pay costs of £20,000 after acting for six different companies offering investments in graphene, diamonds, oil contracts and films. Nearly £9.5m passed through the client account in relation to these investments.

This included being involved in a suspected investment scam where he took millions of pounds from investors looking to make money from water purification technology and paid it to other people without the investors’ knowledge. As well as being struck off, he was ordered to pay £40,000 costs. The solicitors involved will have the right to appeal these decisions within 21 days of the SDT publishing its judgments. The SRA has now published advice for the public and warnings for solicitors. “Fraudsters continually change products to one that they claim is the latest opportunity to make high profits. People are often told that their money is covered by the law firm’s insurance. Solicitors must have insurance, but if the solicitor is helping a scam, the insurance company may refuse to pay out,” says the SRA. “Disciplinary action continues to be taken against anyone in the profession found to have helped.

If the proposed scheme is in something unusual, ask yourself why. Unusual assets are often very high risk. Thailandexpatfinance@yahoo.com 36

THAI LEGAL

DEPENDENT

VISA

D

ependent Visa Family members of foreigners who are in Thailand on long-stay visas may qualify for nonimmigrant O- type visas. A dependent visa is applicable to the foreigner’s immediate family, including spouse, minor children and parents.

The foreigner must have the following in order to be eligible for such a visa: 1. A non-Immigrant B-type visa with a work permit. 2. A dependent visa can also be applicable if the foreigner holds a retirement visa, if the spouse of the visa holder is younger than 50 years of age. 3. Proof of the applicant’s relationship to the non-immigrant visa holder is required, such as a marriage certificate if the dependent is a spouse. 4. A birth certificate would satisfy this requirement if the dependent is a child.

It is important to note that the Thai immigration requires that the document is certified as genuine by the applicant’s embassy in Thailand. If the applicant is not already in Thailand they may apply for a dependent visa at a Thai embassy or consulate in their home country, provided they have all the required documents. They can then enter the country on a visa that is valid for 90 days and later apply to convert this to a dependent visa at the Immigration Bureau. If the applicant has already entered Thailand on another type of visa, this can be converted to a non- immigrant type O dependent visa in country, assuming the candidate meets all qualifications. The period of validity of the dependent visa is linked to that of the main visa holder’s length of stay. In the case of a married couple, for instance, if the husband has a one-year visa and work permit, the wife’s visa will also be valid for that same period. Juslaws Immigration lawyers have significant experience with immigration regulations and the procedures involved with securing dependent visas. Their Professionals will ensure that the process proceeds smoothly and that all government requirements are satisfied.

SLOWING

DOWN The IMF has slashed global growth forecasts four times in the last year. Trade growth, another key indicator, is weak. Trade growth is below economic growth rates, suggesting further falls in activity. It may also signal a slowdown in cross-border financing of trade and a shift towards autarky or closed economies as the benefits of globalization diminish. More than half of Americans are at risk of being of unable to cover essential living expenses during retirement, according to a recent study. U.S. growth, at around 2% annual, remains subpar. America’s improvement has been driven by a lower dollar, growth in emerging markets, and a revitalized energy sector that is now reversing. Europe and Japan are more desperate. Europe’s tentative recovery was driven by negative short-term rates, massive QE, and a weaker euro EURUSD, -0.1119% The Continent may have a deteriorating outlook, with economists hunting for decimal points of improvement with microscopes. German exports to emerging markets are slowing. The Volkswagen emissions scandal has cast a shadow over European technical prowess. European debt problems remain unresolved. In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in Paris, the French government announced that it will not abide by deficit and debt limits. Italy refuses to bring public finances under control, despite a worsening debt-to-GDP ratio.

Greece is likely to be in spotlight, with a relapse probable. Portugal’s new government, an uneasy coalition between foes, has sworn allegiance to the EU and the euro but is seeking major concessions. With the highest total debt-toGDP in the EU, a Portuguese debt restructuring, explicit or de facto, is not unimaginable. Spain’s public finances remain poor and unemployment unsustainably high. Europe’s refugee crisis may boost economic activity, but is expensive, at around 10,000 euro per refugee per year initially, further pressuring weak finances. Serious opposition to immigration and free movement of people required by the Schengen treaty has emerged. With China contributing around one-third to half of global growth annually, a deceleration in Chinese demand hurts the 40 or so countries that count China as their biggest export customer.

Curing

SUNBURN Naturally

It is important to avoid spending too much time under the sun with no protection. Make sure that you wear long sleeve and use an adapted (organic) sunscreen cream.

Comforting recipe: Aloe vera can be applied on local treatments as well. Fresh (avoid aloe vera gels) it contains vitamin and acid that provide fast and adequate solution in case of sunburns.

Although even if you are careful you can always get sunburns. To cure them, avoid as much as possible chemically made lotion and after sun. They might have active agents that will do more harms than good.

Here are some easy to prepare recipes to follow in case of burns: These recipes relieve the pain and the feeling of being hot like the sun. But it is also important to regenerates the skin. Here again, Mother Nature can help.

Aromatic recipe: Put 10 drops of lavender essential oil in a carrier oil like argan or jojoba. These carrier oils strengthen skin cells and enhance healing. Moreover lavender essential oil is well-known for its healing properties and it capacity to regenerate skin cells. Culinary recipe: White vinegar (or cider vinegar). Vinegar pH balance the skin pH that has been damaged by the sun and provide an immediate feeling of freshness. Appeasing recipe:

Wet some baking soda with fresh water, and apply compress of this blend on your skin for 10 minutes. It will appease your skin and provide a refreshing feeling.

APPROACH December 2016

Nothing is better than rose musk oil (known also under the name rose hip oil). This oil, extracted from rose flowers, has amazing regenerating properties. It erases black spot on the skin and reinforce cellular connection in the epidermis. Therefore it brings back it elasticity to the skin. Mixed with geranium essential oil it is a real boost for your skin. You can also try carrot oil. It is also a very precious oil, rich in Vitamin A that appeases the skin and regenerates skin tissues damaged by the sun. It also helps to get a nice skin tone faster and avoid the red marks of sunburns. These treatments have fast action, with no risk of side effects. Many people advice, in case of burns, to apply toothpaste. This is a very wrong idea. The fluorine contained in toothpaste can give a feeling of coolness but it will ultimately give more damage to the wounds.

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Sugar is the

ENEMY Sugar is the biggest enemy that we have in our diet. It is the most insidious liar. It tricks our tongue, taste buds and mind. It is called the “love drug” and addictive it can be. Hate to rain on your sugar parade, but we all need reminding that it is a “thief” as it robs us silently of our health. • Sugar can suppress your immune system and impair your defences against infectious disease and cancer. • Sugar feeds cancer cells and has been connected with the development of cancer of the breast, ovaries, prostate, rectum, pancreas, biliary tract, lung, gallbladder and stomach. • Sugar can cause premature aging in general. • Sugar can cause atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. • Sugar can increase kidney size and produce pathological changes in the kidney such as the formation of kidney stones. • Sugar can increase your risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Sugar has always been an integral part of the Thai diet. There is plentiful Sugar in every Thai dish, MSG and fish sauce. But what’s dangerous is how much of it we consume today in packaged foods and drinks. Sugar sweetened beverages essentially expands the list beyond the Coca Cola to include packaged fruit juices, probiotic yogurt drinks, energy and sports drinks containing sugar and worse of all Aspartames and other artificial sweeteners once praised as healthy sugar substitute. So, no more sugar in your tea but have a Marie biscuit to go with it. Marie biscuits are a healthy choice because it’s not as sweet as a regular biscuit. 46

APPROACH December 2016

There you go, the sweetness is the problem. So no more sugary fruits like: Mango, Jackfruit, Lychees, etc. Doesn’t matter if they are local, doesn’t matter if they contain natural fruit sugar, fructose. The American Diabetic Association can recommend Mango to diabetics but in the land of its origin, it is banned by the doctors and dietitians. Thailand now consumes three times more sugar than it used to just in 1970s, and that’s not because it’s eating more sugar. But because it’s drinking more soft drinks, packaged juices and eating sugared cereals. It is distributing brownies, cupcakes and frozen yogurts. In order to function properly, the brain depends on a steady supply of chemicals like glucose and insulin. When glucose (another name for sugar) enters the body, insulin opens cell doors to allow it into the cells. However, when your brain experiences continuous sugar spikes (from your breakfast of Lucky Charms to your post-dinner ice cream sandwich), insulin becomes more immune to its effects and therefore less effective. This in turn leads to depression and anxiety.

KIDS & EDUCATION

TOOLS FOR LEARNING SUCCESS

Training Kids to enhance their Cognitive Potential for total development! Educators have always been concerned with intelligence, but have never had a theory of intelligence to guide them. Instead, education has been guided by theories of learning and methods of teaching. That is why the Structure Of Intellect and its application to education is important to the development of understanding and improving the educational process. It can truly reform education by changing the way we instruct and assess to match the goal of educating all students to their full potential. The Structure of Intellect is a theory of human intelligence that was developed from 1945 to 1965 by Dr. J. P. Guilford and his colleagues at the University of Southern California. The SOI is the application of the Structure of Intellect theory to various learning situations. It has been in continuous use and development from 1965 to the present. SOI applies the Structure of Intellect to learning - general education, reading instruction, remedial education, gifted education, training and retraining, and career counselling. SOI is applicable to all of these diverse areas because it identifies how human intelligence and its development (or lack of development) are related to demands of learning. This is described in the SOI Model for Learning.

What is intelligence? Intelligence is the ability to behave appropriately under unpredictable conditions. At present, intelligence is a diffuse concept and there are multitudes of theories that attempt to explain it. Some involve a general intelligence, some involve situational factors, and some involve both. None of them satisfactorily deals with the scope of intelligence To be labeled as being ‘‘intelligent’’ imparts positive feelings, encourages self-esteem and a sense of worth. Yet, what is intelligent and smart? This has been the focus of theories, definitions and philosophies dating as far back as Plato (428 BC); yet most presumably, dating prior to this historical figure, might be due to the fact that humankind is himself Intelligent. One way to seek understanding of intelligence is simply to define what it is. Operational intelligence is measurable. Real intelligence is one that inquires the true nature of the thing being defined. As with the plethora of definitions of intelligence, there are numerous theories of intelligence. From examining how smart one is to how to measure one’s smartness, how to measure how one is smart, theories have come and gone and some have endured to be pondered and proven over time. Analytical Intelligence - is what we generally think of as academic ability. It enables us to solve problems and to acquire new knowledge. Problem - solving skill include

50

APPROACH December 2016

encoding information, combining and comparing pieces of information and generating a solution. Creative Intelligence - is defined by the abilities to cope with novel situations and to profit from experience. The ability to quickly relate novel situations to familiar situations (that is, to perceive similarities and differences) fosters adaptation. Moreover, as a result of experience, we also become able to solve problems more rapidly. Practical Intelligence - or ‘‘street smarts’’,enable people to adapt to the demands of their environment. For example, keeping a job by adapting one’s behaviour to the employer’s requirements is adaptive. But if the employer is making unreasonable demands, reshaping the environment (by changing the employer´s attitudes) or selecting an alternate environment (by finding a more suitable job) is also adaptive.

KIDS & EDUCATION The diagnostic assessments and training tools allow them to assess and train up to 27 cognitive skills covering aspects of processing speed, memory, evaluation and reasoning, problem-solving and creativity.

At ThinkersBox, children learn how to: »» »» »» »» »» »»

Have good focus and attention Grasp and process information faster Be careful and observant Have good reasoning and judgement Retain and remember information Form connections between ideas and more

Giving children these key abilities will not only make them a more engaged and confident learner in their school years but also build a strong foundation for their future success. Taking a long-term perspective towards children’s success they look beyond the scores for this week’s spelling test or this year’s exams and extend that vision to each child’s ability to truly be able to problem-solve, come up with solutions, analyse different situations, grasp and make sense of their environment. It is time to look beyond grades.

Cognitive Intelligence is a general mental capability that, among other things, involves the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend complex ideas, learn quickly and learn from experience. It is not merely book learning, a narrow academic skill, or test-taking smarts. Until a clear-cut definition of intelligence can be given, theories will continue not to be able to explain it. The likelihood of such a definition occurring is virtually zero, as there will always be alternatives given, and so theories of intelligence are bound to be self-defeating.

Thinkersbox headquarters are in Singapore. There is a Thinkersbox in Hua Hin as well at the Bluport Mall. At ThinkersBox, they develop children for success in life. They are not talking about school subjects or grades. They are looking at providing every child with the right skills to succeed beyond the classroom! As our world continues to evolve, our kids will face new challenges. Textbook knowledge and grades will not be sufficient in a fastchanging and unpredictable environment. Beyond grades, parents need to provide their children with the capabilities to process, analyse, reason, judge and apply knowledge. We need to teach our kids to think.

SOI is a system of tests and training materials to develop intellectual learning abilities necessary for academic success. Train weak abilities and enhance strong ones. Thinkerbox specialises in Cognitive Development for children aged 5-12 years old. Thinkersbox focusses on building and improving key intellectual capabilities that will help each child to maximise their potential within and beyond the classroom. These key capabilities are called cognitive skills and they are fundamental brain processes that enable each of us to process, receive, retain, judge and analyse incoming and outgoing information.

MOTORING

TAXI’S of the

WORLD Gottlieb Dailmer in 1897 invented the first meter equipped taxicab known as Daimler Victoria and the world’s first motorized Taxi Company was started by Friedrich Greiner. I think we all agree that traditional taxis still have their charm. Besides being a convenient and reliable means of transportation, these automobiles licensed to transport passengers for a fare, usually make for great stories to tell back home. Just like sampling the cuisine of a place, traveling in a local cab will, most of the times, give you an insight into the culture of that particular place. And while some of them share many characteristics, not all are created equal. These

vehicles vary from country to country and even city to city, offering a broad spectrum of experiences to visitors. From New York’s iconic yellow cabs to the quirky tuk-tuks of Thailand, here are some the coolest and most interesting taxis around the world. New York City’s affair with taxis began in 1897, when Samuel’s Electric Carriage and Wagon Company, the first taxicab firm in town, made 12 electric hansom cabs available to citizens. The city’s first gasoline-powered taxis, however, were imported from France in 1907 and painted canary yellow in order to be visible from a distance. Nowadays, NYC has more cabs than regular cars.

AUSTRIA

USA The “Checker”, particularly the 1958–82 Checker A series sedans remain the most famous taxi cab vehicles in the United States. The vehicle is comparable to the London Taxi in its nationally renowned styling, which went largely unchanged throughout its use, and also for its iconic status

Vienna is famous for its horse-drawn taxicabs, called Fiakers. Usually operated by family-run companies, they date back to 1693 and are part of the city’s rich heritage. Although today these traditional horse-drawn carriages are mainly used for weddings and ceremonies, a fiaker ride makes for a memorable, authentic experience for the visitor to the elegant Austrian capital.

THAILAND

UK The origin of taxi can be traced back to 1605, when the first ever public hackney coach service for hire began operating in London. No wonder the city’s iconic black cabs are reputed to be among the world’s best taxis. 54

APPROACH December 2016

Taxis in Thailand come in various shapes and colours, but you can’t leave the country without experiencing the thrill of a tuk-tuk ride. Extremely popular in Bangkok and other Thai cities where traffic congestion is a serious problem, these exciting, three-wheeled vehicles, also called auto rickshaws, are a quick, fun way of getting around.

MOTORING

INDIA

PHILIPPINES Introduced in 1911, Mumbai’s legendary, non-airconditioned Fiat taxis painted in black and yellow are an integral part of the city’s charm and character.

VENICE ITALY With waterways instead of streets, it’s no surprise that people in Venice use gondolas and water taxis to get around the city. Locally known as taxi acquei or motoscafi, these speed boats are the fastest and priciest way to move around.

Locally known as tricycles (traysikel in Filipino), auto rickshaws in the Philippines come in various shapes and styles. The most common design is a motorbike with a right sidecar. Nevertheless, you can always find a wellequipped Toyota taxicab in Manila and other major cities throughout the country.

GERMANY With native engineer Friedrich Wilhelm Gustav Bruhn inventing the taximeter in 1891, it’s fair to say that Germany played an important role in the history of taxicabs. These days, most German cities, particularly Munich, stand out for their high-class, cream-colored taxis which include mainly Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz cars.

MEXICO & BRAZIL The taxicabs of Mexico and Brazil are a common form of transportation in most cities of the country. Taxicabs in Mexico and Brazil tend to have very low fares compared to that in more economically developed countries. There are more than 140,000 taxicabs alone in Mexico City making it one of the largest taxicab fleets in the world. VW Beetles, built in Mexico and Brazil were transformed to a 3 person taxi. COOLEST GADGETS

TOP 4 TABLETS 2016

The tablet market seems to be equally divided between Apple and Samsung according to the statistics. However other makes are slowly but surely offering alternative solutions. APPROACH chose the main 4 competitors on the market.

iPad Pro 9.7 - 23,500 Baht The best tablet you can buy right now is the iPad Pro 9.7 - the smaller screen with powerful innards is the best combination on the market. RAM: 3GB. Storage: 32GB/128GB/256GB. Rear Camera 12 MP – Front Camera 5 MP. Great speakers - Pencil and keyboard support - 256GB version While there are plenty of brilliant Android tablets around at the moment, the newest iPad offers a lot of the power of the larger iPad Pro, along with the Smart Keyboard and Pencil support, but brings it in a much more bag-and-palm friendly size. The four speakers are just brilliant too.

Google Pixel C - 20,500 Baht This is the best Android tablet. RAM: 3GB | Storage: 32GB/64GB | Battery: up to 10 hours | Rear camera: 8MP | Front camera: Fantastic screen - Premium design - Plenty of power - Heavy It has it all: a fantastic display, heaps of power and a premium design. Plus, for those willing to splash the cash, the keyboard is a great accessory. It’s not quite a laptop replacement, but for those in the market for a premium Android tablet. That’s especially great as you can now download Android 7 Nougat software.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 - 14,300 Baht A top notch iPad rival RAM: 3GB | Storage: 32GB/64GB | Battery: 4000mAh/5870mAh | Rear camera: 8MP | Front camera: 2.1MP - Thinner, lighter design - Rare expandable memory - Improved interface Older model - Battery life not great. This is the best tablet that Samsung has ever produced - it’s both reading and web surfing-friendly, has a sensational Super AMOLED screen, and you can pick it up in 8-inch and 9.7-inch variants. Almost impossibly thin, pumped full of power and with a slicker interface it gives the best iPads a real run for its money.

Microsoft Surface Pro 4 - 31,000 Baht The tablet that can replace your laptop RAM: 4GB/8GB/16GB | Storage: 128GB | Battery: up to 9 hours | Rear camera: 8MP | Front camera: 5MP - Larger, sharper screen - Vastly improved Type Cover - Built in kickstand. It does a fine job with the full blown version of Windows 10, an integrated kickstand and optional keyboard attachment. Great for for creative professionals, students and everyday folks alike, this is a top choice and the best Windows Laptop we’ve reviewed.
