Thank you for your loyalty throughout 2016. We will continue to contribute lifestyle stories and extend contents throughout 2017. We will continue amazing you. No flashback of 2016, I leave this to other media as there is little positive to chat about. International atrocities, political battles of personal insult on the largest stage. These people call themselves leaders of the world? What a unfortunate joke. At APPROACH we want to keep reporting about the positive things in our lives, our health, our kids, exciting new products, financial and legal tips…you name it. All in one cover. Unfortunately there were no major events in December and January as the passing of our beloved King is respected. As his son takes over, the crowning will be a major glamorous event to report about.

The

NEW KING of THAILAND

His Royal Majesty, Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn is the King of Thailand. As the tenth monarch of the Chakri Dynasty, he is also styled as Rama X. At the age of 64, Vajiralongkorn is the oldest Thai monarch to ascend to the throne. He is the only son of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit. In 1972, at the age of 20, he was made crown prince by his father. fter his father’s death on 13 October 2016, he was expected to succeed to the throne of Thailand but asked for time to mourn before taking the throne. He accepted the throne on the night of 1 December 2016 but will not be crowned formally until after the cremation of his father.

A

Rattanakosin Era gave the child his first name at birth, “Vajiralongkorn Borommachakkrayadisonsantatiwong Thewetthamrongsuboriban Aphikhunuprakanmahittaladunladet Phumiphonnaretwarangkun Kittisirisombunsawangkhawat Borommakhattiyaratchakuman.

The government retroactively declared his reign to have begun on 13 October 2016, upon his father’s passing.

His Majesty began his education in 1956 when he entered kindergarten at the Chitralada School in Dusit Palace. After completing Mathayom 1 (through grade seven), he was sent to study at public schools in the United Kingdom. First at King’s Mead School, Seaford, Sussex, and then at Millfield School, Somerset, where he completed his secondary education in July 1970. In August 1970, he attended a five-week military training course at The King’s School, in Sydney, Australia.

His Majesty Maha Vajiralongkorn was born on 28 July 1952 in the Ambara Villa of the Dusit Palace in Bangkok. When the crown prince was one year old, Somdet Phra Sangkharat Chao Krommaluang Wachirayanwong, the 13th supreme patriarch of the 8

In 1972, the prince enrolled at the Royal Military College, Duntroon in Canberra, Australia. His education at Duntroon was divided into two parts: military training by the Australian Army and a bachelor’s degree course under the auspices of the University of New South Wales. He was graduated in 1976 as a newly commissioned lieutenant with a liberal arts degree.

Also interested in agricultural development, His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn accepted the “Mobile Agricultural Clinic Project” under his patronage. The project provides prompt services to farmers in order to enhance efficiency in farm production and solve farmers’ problems. It comprises experts in various agricultural fields who can advise farmers on plants, livestock, fisheries, and land development. He also offers suggestions on the tackling of agricultural problems, in addition to the application of agricultural technology to increase productivity and the improvement in the quality of agricultural production. In 2015, he made two high-profile public appearances in Thailand, leading thousands of people in mass bicycling events not only in Bangkok, but also nationwide to honoured the birthday of his parents, Queen Sirikit and King Bhumibol, also known as Bike for Mom and Bike for Dad.

In 1982 he completed a second bachelor’s degree in law with second-class honours at Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University. After completing his studies, the Crown Prince served as a career officer in the Royal Thai Army. He served as a staff officer in the Directorate of Army Intelligence, attended the Command and General Staff College in 1977 and trained for periods with the US, British, and Australian armed services, studying unconventional warfare and advanced navigation. He is a qualified fixedwing and helicopter pilot. In 1978 he became head of the King’s Own Bodyguard Battalion. Later that year he interrupted his military career to be ordained for a season as a Buddhist monk, as is customary for all Thai Buddhist men.

These two events have promoted unity and good health among the Thai people of all sectors. In additions, it has bolstered his image, promoting himself as a dutiful son, and crucially, that he has the strong backing of the armed forces, who joined him at the event, and that he could be a “man of the people”, like his father.

His Majesty holds the ranks of General in the Royal Thai Army, Admiral in the Royal Thai Navy and Air Chief Marshal in the Royal Thai Air Force. He is qualified to pilot the Northrop F-5, F-16, and the Boeing 737-400. Intermittently, he engaged in actions for counter-insurgency purposes in the North and Northeast areas of Thailand. His military role in recent years has become increasingly ceremonial. As his father grew older, the Prince took a more prominent part in royal ceremonial and public appearances. GEMS of

THAILAND

The Tourism Authority of Thailand promoted the 12 Hidden Gems of Thailand. 1. PROVINCE of CHANTABURI

T

hese tourism destinations include the cities and provinces of Lampang, Petchabun, Nan, Buriram, Loei, Samut Songkhram, Ratchaburi, Trat, Chanthaburi, Trang, Chumphon, and Nakhon Sri Thammaratand.

Chanthaburi is in the east of Thailand, on the border with Battambang and Pailin of Cambodia and on the shore of the Gulf of Thailand. Neighbouring provinces are Trat in the east and Rayong, Chonburi, Chachoengsao, and Sa Kaeo to the west and north.

Chanthaburi means: The Lady Chan who wears a pan on her head.

Beyond the French colonial influences of the town an evening stroll along heritage streets and an overnight at

a quiet beach resort. Chanthaburi is a convenient stepping stone to beach resorts on Chang, Kut and Mak islands, Trat town, and western Cambodia. After the Paknam crisis in 1893, French colonial troops occupied Chanthaburi, returning it in 1905 when Thailand gave up ownership of the western part of Cambodia. A significant minority of Chanthaburi citizens are native Vietnamese, who came there in three waves: first in the 19th century during anti-Catholic persecutions in Cochin China; a second wave in the 1920s to 1940s fleeing from French Indochina; and a third wave after the communist victory in Vietnam in 1975. The town of Chanthaburi has been the seat of a Bishop of Chanthaburi since 1944. While the southern part of the province is on the shore of the Gulf of Thailand and thus is mostly coastal alluvial plains, the hinterlands of the province are quite mountainous. The Chanthaburi mountain range in the north has the highest elevation of the province, the 1,556 m high Soi Dao Nua Peak. The main river of the province is the Chanthaburi River.

16

APPROACH January 2017

In the Town of Chanthaburi there are several temples, churches and shrines to visit. Culturally eclectic Chanthaburi in eastern Thailand has long been home to large Chinese, Khmer and Vietnamese communities and was also influenced by the Shan from Burma as well as the French, who ruled the area from 1893 to 1905. This mixed heritage is evident in both the food and architecture that line the city’s narrow streets, but an exploration of its temples, churches and shrines is perhaps the most fascinating way to get a sense for the diversity of Chanthaburi.

Songthaew taxi ride to the southeast of the town takes you to one of Thailand’s most popular national parks (at least among Thais): Namtok Phlio. The park was named after a waterfall that roars over sheer cliffs, but don’t forget to purchase long string beans to feed the fish that burst from a crystal clear water stream here. If Chanthaburi’s beaches were comparable to the stretches of white sand and emerald water of nearby Ko Samet, Ko Chang or Ko Maak, the province would unquestionably be a marquee tourism hotspot. Its coast does boast expansive beaches as far as the eye can see, some of which

TRAVEL IN THAILAND Thailand to explore thanks to its many inlets, bays, peninsulas, viewpoints and fishing villages. Perhaps Chanthaburi’s relatively light tourism numbers are due to it lacking any one single all-star attraction that screams “if you miss it you’ll never forgive yourself!” Yet it’s the mosaic of culture, history, food, mountains, waterfalls and beaches that places Chanthaburi among our favourite Thai destinations. Wander through the old streets and temples, be dampened by the mist of a waterfall, lose yourself on an off-the-map peninsula and bite into the most pungent durian in Thailand. Hotels in Chanthaburi are plenty and prices vary from THB 450 at a simple guesthouse to 4 star hotels up to THB 7500 at the Bamboo Garden House, a coastal property on the beach. Chanthaburi’s many cultural influences are reflected in its food, making this one of the most enjoyable spots in Thailand for Asian food lovers. The area is also home to some outstanding seafood, which is a must particularly if hitting the beach towns of Laem Singh and Chao Lao. A must for food lovers is a casual stroll through the old town’s Sukhapiban Road, where modest shops dish out cheap and memorable eats.

With coulourful history and a distinct mix of cultures, Chanthaburi is among the country’s most precious undervisited gems. It’s also the literal home to some of Thailand’s most precious gems — The city is the centre of Thailand’s lucrative precious stone trade. With its glittering jewels, French-influenced architecture, artsy riverside atmosphere, dazzling temples and churches, and a delicious mix of local food, a stroll through the Chanthaboon Old Town is a must for culture-oriented travellers.

are worthy of a nice long lounge, but generally the water is on the murky side. The beaches are still lovely by more down-to-earth standards; they’re just nothing to write home about if you’ve been to the islands. Even so, the Chantaburi coast is one of the most rewarding seaside areas in

Chanthaburi also features some good prepared food markets. While the small Chalerm Jan day market that sets up near Wat Kate Na Boonyaram is the place to go for Thai sweets, Nam Phu market near the fountain in the centre of town offers everything from durian jam to locally made grass mats. Courtesy of Thailand Tourist Authority

With waterfalls, a coastline full of surprises, fabulous regional food and a dreamy old riverfront district influenced by the Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese and French, Chanthaburi offers a wealth of good stuff in one accessible package. A manageable motorbike or

Chinese New Year

THE

YEAR ROOSTER OF THE

C

hinese New Year, known in modern Chinese as the “Spring Festival”, is an important Chinese festival celebrated at the turn of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. Celebrations traditionally run from the evening preceding the first day, to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first calendar month. The first day of the New Year falls on the new moon between 21 January and 20 February. In 2017, the first day of the Chinese New Year is on Saturday, 28 January.

Chinese New Year in Thailand - Chinatown - Bangkok In Thailand, it’s no surprise that the best place to go to witness the county’s Chinese New Year celebrations is Chinatown in Bangkok, which can be found around the bustling ‘Yaowarat’ Road in the Old City area. Every year, the road grinds to a halt for two or three days around new year, welcoming colorful street parades, including dragon dancers, lively music, noisy firecrackers and plenty of exotic street food vendors selling tasty treats to both locals and foreign visitors. Unlike in China where three days are set aside for a public holiday, offices, businesses and banks in Thailand operate as normal – although it’s usual for Thai-Chinese workers to book a day or two off work so they can join in the fun!

in tradition red decorations, and the waft of incense in the air is even more powerful than usual. The Chinese New Year tradition is to light up one of the incense sticks, kneel in front of one of the deities, and make a wish for good fortune for the coming New Year. 2017 is also the year of the Rooster - The main features of the Rooster: The brightest sun sign, Rooster songs heralds the dawn, but also embodies the hero, the guardian and protector of life. You can see his picture on the roofs of many houses. As a Rooster, you are always on guard, look down on the people, and carefully look into the horizon. At night, you are overclocking the ghosts - Army Forces of Darkness. The Rooster is the embodiment of youth, strength, hope and purity.

Other than Yaowarat Road, head to Leng Noei Temple on Charoen Krung Street, which is one of the best places in Thailand to experience the festivities. This Chinese temple is popular all year round with both Chinese, Thais and tourists, but it is on New Year’s Day when it’s at its most vibrant, with worshippers coming to pay their respects to the deities above, as well as tourists coming to take photos and soak up the culture. The temple is decked out 20

You are reasonable and can almost always find someone who is both talented and is able to feed your future family. You treat family life wise and humorous. Remplacer sa consommation de soda

Par Florent Ducret

I

THAI NATURE

The

Coppersmith Barbet Megalaima haemacephala

By Dr. George F. Grossniklaus

The barbet birds are a group of animals with 82 species in 13 genera originally considered in the Woodpecker family. The origin of the name lies in the beak phillippi, stiff bristles. The family described by Charles Lucien Bonaparte in 1838 is today a paraphyletic taxon, since it would form a monophyllum only with the inclusion of the toucans (Ramphastidae). They were therefore divided into four families, African beards (Lybiidae), American beardies (Capitonidae), Asian beardies (Megalaimidae) and toucan beakbirds (Semnornithidae). Barbet birds could become 9 cm (African dwarf bearded birds) up to 32 centimeters long (green bearded birds). Most species have no sex dimorphism. Many of the species have a colorful plumage. Barbet birds have an arsenal of very loud shouts. They usually consist of a phrase which is often repeated.

26

The call is a loud rather metallic tuk‌tuk‌tuk (or tunk), reminiscent of a copper sheet being beaten, giving the bird its name. Repeated monotonously for long periods, starting with a subdued tuk and building up to an even volume and tempo, the latter varying from 108 to 121 per minute and can continue with as many as 204 notes. They are silent and do not call in winter. The beak remains shut during each call - a patch of bare skin on both sides of the throat inflates and collapses with each tuk like a rubber bulb and the head is bobbed.

THAI NATURE The Asian beardies (Megalaimidae) live with a variety of 26 species in the forests of Asia. The birds are 15 to 33 inches long. Their plumage is green, with a kind of brownish and has contrasting, coloured spots on the head and chest. They feed on fruits, insects and plunder the nests of smaller birds. Asian barbet birds are monogamous. They lay two to four eggs. Both parents are involved in rearing, often still supported by young birds from previous broods.

In most cases, barbet birds are found in the foliage of the trees; despite their colorful plumage, they are well camouflaged there. Barbet birds feed on insects and fruits. They are usually found only at fertile feed sources such as large, fruit-bearing trees in large quantities, otherwise they live single or in pairs. Some species of barbet birds breed only in a tightly limited season, others throughout the year. Like all the woodpeckers, barbet birds are cave breeders. The caves, which are chopped with a strong beak in rotten wood, are distinguished by a long passage into a large nesting chamber. These caves are often used as sleeping areas outside the breeding period. Occasionally, the old caves of other woodpeckers are occupied by bearded birds. Courtship involves singing, puffing of the throat, bobbing of the head, flicking of the tail, ritual feeding and allopreening. They breed through much of the year with local variation. The breeding season is mainly February to April in India and December to September in Sri Lanka. Both sexes excavate the nest on the underside of a narrow horizontal branch. They may also roost inside the nest holes. Three or four eggs are laid and like in many hole nesting birds the incubation period is not well known but has been estimated to be about 2 weeks. Both sexes incubate. Often two broods are raised in quick succession.

The Barbet feeds preferably on banyan, peepul, and other wild figs, various drupes and berries, and the occasional insect, caught in aerial sallies. Petals of flowers may also be included in their diet. They eat nearly 1.5 to nearly 3 times their body weight in berries each day Adult birds are sometimes taken by predatory species. In urban areas, there are records of collisions with structures including white walls. Pesticide poisoning has also been noted.

The females lay about two to five white eggs with longitudinal grooves in the breeding cavity, which is padded with mulm or wood chips. The eggs are incubated alternately by both parent animals, but at night the male only breeds exceptionally. The naked and blind chicks in the hatch have strong seat-weals on their heels. After four or five weeks, they leave the breeding-cave with a much less colorful feather dress, which later becomes dyed. January 2017 APPROACH

MONEY AFFAIRS

INVESTING

REVOLUTION By Jerry Mcmenamin

I

got an email from a reader last week asking if she should use a “wrap” to hold her investments as her adviser had recommended this.

In the US and the UK the concept of Fund Supermarkets is well developed and many retail investors would use these as way to invest.

to Jupiter and get the same lower cost fund, however the minimum investment to go direct is £5m! In terms of our understanding, we know that 1) platforms or WRAPs will charge us a fee although 2) the cost of investment funds will be lower. You can appoint a professional money manager to run the investments on your behalf, or set up the portfolio to re-balance’ itself every quarter to avoid higher risk from portfolio drift. By logging on to the platform you can keep track of your investments and move everything into cash at the click of a button instead of phoning twelve different firms. What I like most is the ability to see what’s going on in the section of my account that’s run by my investment manager, as well as being able to research funds on the platform that I might buy for my self-managed section. What’s also particularly good is the range of funds available and the way this keeps growing. It seems that if one investment manager identifies a “good” fund, it gets added to the platform and then it’s available to all, although I’m reassured by the fact I can only access regulated funds too – no unregulated rubbish.

Dealing directly with retail clients investing ten or twenty thousand pounds is expensive and the charges you pay to Jupiter, Henderson and the likes reflect this. The Jupiter Merlin fund range for example charges about 2.54% pa. The present situation is that retail investors can access low cost institutional share classes through a platform or wrap, as it’s much less expensive for a fund manager to deal with the platform as one client who in turn might have twenty thousand individual clients. The retail investor can go direct 30

APPROACH January 2017

In different jurisdictions, these WRAPs allow access to different types of investment accounts, for example ISAs and SIPPs in the UK. This ability to have all my investments in one place as well as the cost savings and extensive fund range alongside the fact I can log on day or night, whatever the time zone means I’m a big fan of WRAPs, Platforms or Fund Supermarkets, whatever you call them!

THAI LEGAL

ACCOUNTING IN

THAILAND Accounting looks at the heart of each and every business. Financial Statements serve as a crucial source of information for business owners, managers, directors, business partners, investors, creditors and the Revenue Department for calculating the income tax. A modern regulatory framework for accounting is important for foreign investors.

The following business entities have to keep accounts according to the Thai Accounting Act • Registered partnerships registered under Thai law • Limited Companies registered under Thai law • Public Limited Companies registered under Thai law • Juristic Persons registered under a foreign law if carrying on business in Thailand • Joint Ventures under the Thai Revenue Code • Natural Persons or Unregistered Partnerships engaging in any kind of business in Thailand as prescribed.

Business entities must have a qualified bookkeeper who keeps accounts which must show results of the operations, financial status or changes in financial status in accordance with the facts and accounting standards. Particulars must be entered in Thai language or accompanied by a translation into Thai language.

A business must prepare and submit financial statements to the Accounts Office within five months from the day the accounts are closed. Additionally, a tax return must be filed together with a balance sheet, operating account and profit and loss account, revenue and expense account on gross revenue within 150 days from the last day of the accounting period. These financial statements are the basis for the calculation of the Corporate Income Tax according to Section 65 of the Revenue Code. When speaking about accountants in Thailand these can be either simple book keepers or auditors. Accountants in Thailand must hold a bachelor’s degree in accountancy. Auditors must hold a license as Certified Public Accountants. Both types of accountants, book keepers and auditors, must be members in the FAP. Juristic Persons who offer accounting and auditing services must be registered with the FAP as well. Juristic Persons must even provide a collateral for malpractice liability. The FAP also issues the Thai Accounting Standards which are closely based on the International Accounting Standards. The ASEAN member states are currently in the process of mutually recognizing and liberalizing the accounting professions in the wake of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). Juslaws & Consult of Bangkok is a competent partner for all questions regarding accounting in Thailand and the whole ASEAN region. We can also effectively communicate with company headquarters and mother companies abroad as our international team speaks their language when it comes to accounting question.

FINANCIAL

TOUGH

TIMES

for

EUROPEAN

BANKS M

ore than eight years after the collapse of the global financial system, Europe’s banks are still struggling and things may get worse. The latest threat to euro zone banks comes from Italy, where Monte dei Paschi, the world’s oldest bank, is running out of cash. On Wednesday, the bank disclosed that unless it gets fresh capital, it will be insolvent within four months. Previously, it was saying it had enough cash to last 11 months.

There’s little indication that the economic pressures straining EU ties will ease any time soon. Despite moves by European central bankers to boost growth by slashing interest rates, much of Europe outside Germany, France and the United Kingdom remains stuck with little or no economic growth. Sluggish economic growth has cut into the demand for new loans, which has hammered European bank profits. Ultra-low interest rates have prompted many companies to borrow in the credit markets by issuing bonds, further cutting into loan demand. Weak profits, in turn, have further hampered efforts by Europe’s bankers to rebuild the capital they need to write off bad debts. Now, as the U.S. Federal Reserve embarks on a new policy of gradually raising interest rates, European bankers will continue to struggle with the low profit margins generated by low rates. 34

HEALTH & WELLNESS

EXERCISING to stay

HEALTHY New to exercise?

Here is how to get started!

Exercising helps you to: Strengthen your muscles - Improve your fitness - Lose weight if you need to - Increase your self-confidence.

How much exercise should I do and how often? Aim to do 30 minutes sessions of exercise five times a week. It’s also recommended that you spend 30 minutes a day on our feet - walking, climbing stairs, etc. If you have joint pain, start gently and gradually increase the length of time you’re exercising. Doing 5–10 minutes of exercise each day is important to keep your joints moving and your muscles strong. Try this a couple of times a day and build it into your daily routine.

How will I know if I’ve overdone it? If an hour after you have finished exercising, you’re still aching or feel sorer than when you started, you may have overdone it. You should feel as if your muscles have done some work and have stretched a little after exercise, but you should not be exhausted or in more discomfort. Most people take a while to learn how much exercise they can do. Have a rest the following day and start again the day after, but halve the amount of exercise. Then gradually increase it by a few minutes each day.

What sort of exercise is important? Aim for a combination of Stretching exercises, Strengthening exercises, Fitness exercises. It’s important to keep your joints moving and your muscles strong. If arthritis is causing pain, you may not want to move. But this can increase stiffness and in the long term your muscles will weaken, making movement even more difficult!

Exercise is important because it can help you to: Ease stiffness - Improve your fitness - Improve joint movement - Strengthen muscles and keep your heart healthy Exercise also has positive mental effects. Often you will feel much better and more self-confident when you’ve done some exercise. This can affect the way you cope with a condition. It’s never too late to start keeping yourself fit. Your body is designed to move and not doing so can harm the tissues in and around your joints. Many people are afraid to exercise because they believe that it damages their joints. But keeping active will help to keep your joints supple and reduce pain. 38

APPROACH January 2017

HEALTH & WELLNESS If you’re worried about starting a new exercise, your doctor can give you a check-up to make sure you’ll benefit from more activity. To stay motivated, it’s important to set realistic goals (it’s normal for these goals to change as your condition changes) and do exercise that you enjoy…do it regularly. You don’t need to join a gym or buy special equipment to exercise. The simplest exercises are often the best.

Try to do three main types of exercises:

Stretching exercises help ease aches Strengthening exercises help our Fitness exercises help us to keep our and pains and get the best movement from your joints.

muscles to support our joints.

hearts healthy. This type of exercise can be as simple as walking a bit further or faster than normal.

Stretching exercises, Strengthening exercises and Fitness exercises Always start with a low number of repetitions and build up gradually. It’s normal for your muscles to feel a bit sore after exercise, especially if you’re not used to it, but you should stop if you have sudden or severe pain in your muscles or joints. Seek medical advice if the pain persists after you have finished exercising.

Swimming - Water supports your joints, which makes it easier to move them. In the water, all your muscles and joints are in motion.

Walking is a simple, cheap and very effective way to exercise. Putting weight through your legs when you walk helps keep your bones as strong as possible. Gradually increasing the distance, or walking uphill more often.

Yoga has also been shown to help some people with arthritis. Get advice from your physiotherapist before you start. Cycling is very good for strengthening your knees and for general fitness. However if you get a lot of knee pain you may have to take it very gently to start off with. Stop if your pain gets worse after cycling. Don’t overdo distance wise at it could be a burden for your heart.

Jogging can jar your joints and increase pain, so it may not be the best way for you to keep fit if you have joint pain. Discuss your exercise programme with a gym instructor or physiotherapist. Consult the Internet about exercises : www.whyiexercise.com. There are many websites with useful information and recommendations for exercises. Always consult a physician if you have any doubt about your physical abilities or if pains develop whilst exercising. January 2017 APPROACH

KIDS & EDUCATION

Positive Things We Should Be Saying to Our Kids Encouraging words can have a truly lasting effect on kids years and years after you’ve said them. Use phrases that will make them feel good about themselves inside and out, things that will stick with them. As a parent, saying the wrong thing out of anger or frustration can ultimately cause serious damage to your child’s selfesteem or self-worth. On the flip side, being too positive or calling them perfect can make your child believe he or she is better than everyone else or hold themselves to an impossible standard just to not disappoint.

While some mistake will definitely be made along the way, there are a few key phrases to avoid:

“You did great, why can’t you do that all the time?” When a compliment is immediately followed by a ‘but’, it places the focus on the negative instead of the positive. All the positive reinforcement, self-esteem boost, and motivation gained from the compliment are lost as soon as ‘but’ is uttered.

“You really make me mad !” The number one job of a parent is to stay calm no matter what happens. Aside from the fact that we usually say things we later regret when we’re angry or frustrated, staying calm also models for our children how we want them to behave. This is especially true for parents of kids who tend to get easily upset.

“Come on, it´s not a big deal” Even if something isn’t a big deal to you, it can be a big deal to your child. Telling them that it isn’t, invalidates and shames them for their emotions. Not only are they then upset about the original issue, but they’re ashamed or embarrassed about how upset they are on top of that. These comments never ever help anyone – children or adults – actually feel better or calm down.

“Calm down” If they would, they could! You can never get through to a child when they’re throwing a tantrum. Instead, the best thing to do is remain calm yourself, don’t take the bait, and be patient while validating their feelings

“Hurry up and get ready” This phrase is typical in most households but it doesn’t usually get anything done faster, except for making children feel more stressed. 42

APPROACH January 2017

KIDS & EDUCATION

“Why do I have to tell you this every day again? If you have to endlessly repeat yourself ,then you need to rethink your communication strategy. Nagging never works; kids have very selective listening and they’ll tune you right out. Instead, try asking open-ended questions to get to the root of what’s going on

“I told you so” Bragging about what we know is never helpful to children. They get to learn from their own mistakes just like we did.

“Great Job!” An absolute overused phrase, said even when a child does a mediocre job, that it has lost its meaning and makes a child become dependent on a parent’s affirmation! Being present and really observing a child will do much more to build a child’s self-esteem than repeating an empty phrase like ‘great job’ over and over again.

Last but not least: You might think that by putting on a happy face when you’re anything but happy is protecting your child. But kids can see right through that mask and it scares them. Hiding your negative emotions and faking positive ones not only makes you feel worse inside but it also hurts your relationship with your child. You don’t have to tell them everything that’s wrong but acknowledging your own feelings shows them its okay for them to feel the same way.

Positive things to say to your child: You make me proud - You have great ideas - You don’t have to be perfect to be great - I know you did your best You were right - We can try your way - I love your creativity - I can’t wait to hear about it I love the way you tell stories - What you did was awesome - That was a really good choice - You look great I understand you - That was really brave - We all make mistakes - You are very good at that You can try again tomorrow - Nobody is perfect - I love how you did that - Good point - I love you

Marital Tension stresses children greatly It’s well-known that stress can make you and your whole family irritable. But it also can threaten your marriage. When irritation with work or an untidy house boil over into your interactions with your spouse, your marital relationship suffers and kids suffer along with it. They may express their anxiety or not. However they suffer psychologically.

Avoid stress and tensions within your relationship Women are more likely to transfer negative stress to their spouses and subsequently report more problems with their marriages. Depression and anxiety that may accompany stress can lead to decreased marital satisfaction and have a negative influence on the wellbeing and behaviour of your children. Couples need one-on-one time and not being replaced by “important” tasks Are you replacing the importance of your one-on-one time with your husband with other activities? While there are many important tasks that must be done, from feeding the children to changing laundry to the dryer to getting that big project done for work, nothing should take precedence over improving and preserving your marriage. Parenting is one of the most important responsibilities we will ever take upon us. In school we learn algebra, history, and English, but not how to raise happy and responsible children. We receive no parental guidance training or how to deal with stress of being parents. However, lack of parental guidance or even call it training is reflected in the condition of our children. They often sulk and glare at us. They fail to carry out the responsibilities we give them. They don’t do their homework. They argue and fight with one another.

Our children mean the world to us, but we don’t always remember to tell them so. Remind your children, at least once a day, just how important they are. Using frequent positive communication helps build a strong parent-child relationship and can actually make discipline more effective. January 2017 APPROACH

igital technology is moving us into an additional industrial revolution or may I say connecting consumer demands with the century electronic possibilities. In earlier days, we have moved from horse carriages to steam driven vehicles, diesel powered with the exploitation of crude oil, petrol engines, electric drives and contemporary state of the art hybrid, full electric and combinations thereof. Last but not least, petrol and diesel engines with hydrogen gas technology stretching the km/mile economy to its limits. Even though we have not by far reached the possibilities, real examples of “new” era products can be found in today’s vehicles equipped with state-of-the-art connection systems. We will be able to use our smart phones, laptops & tablets, not only to find our vehicles, but also programme them, diagnosing and plotting them, ultimately putting in destinations where you want it to take you. A Driverless car is around the corner. Conventional vehicles use gasoline or diesel to power an internal combustion engine. Hybrids also use an internal combustion engine—and can be fuelled like normal cars—but have an electric motor and battery, and can be partially or wholly powered by electricity.

By using both a conventional engine and electric motor, the best hybrids achieve significantly better fuel efficiency than their non-hybrid counterparts. They also pollute less and save drivers money through fuel savings. Hybrids that can’t be recharged from an outlet aren’t generally considered to be electric vehicles, as they rely exclusively on gasoline or diesel for energy. The King´s Cup Regatta in Phuket

The King´s Cup Regatta was held from December 3rd to 10th

W

ith the passing of HM the King, it has been a difficult time for the organising committee. However in respect of the King’s honourable sailing achievements ‘The show must go on” and everyone was glad it did, with all the pomp and ceremony fit for a King. Every aspect of sailing - strong, light and no wind, tested the sailor’s abilities, patience and boat construction throughout the week. I’m sure that’s how the King of Sailing would have liked it to be. As far as the future is concerned, we all hope the King’s Cup continues to remember the past King’s sailing achievements and the new King adds some touches of his own.

Regatta organizers, local and international sailors joined in 89 seconds of silence to mourn the passing of HM the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and honour HM King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkunat accession to the throne, at the Opening Ceremony. After that, it was all out on the water and ready to do what sailors do best. The race finals did not produce any thrills and spills, like the first two days but will be remembered for the contrasting spinnaker colours, clear blue sky and sparkling sea back drop, as the yachts circulated on a tight windward / leeward course. Expectations were high as many skippers wanted to make that one last leap for glory but in most cases the conditions prevented it from happening.
