Great monsoon time. My garden turned green within 3 days time… this is the tropical way! Be a bit careful if you live in the countryside as our creepy crawlies tend to leave their hideaways due to the rain. Sitting at the Banyan Golf club late afternoon, you can sometimes see the water festival pour down over the distant hills which host the Pranburi dam and Kaeng Krachan Lake. Anyway, it is sad reading negative news every day. Thailand is being exposed as unsafe by such media and it is hurting our tourist industry. I received an Email from a former Formula 1 racing driver telling me that he will postpone his visit to Thailand because his travel insurance rejects to cover him. Let’s hope this kind of news with forums is stopped somehow, we don’t need it. We need visitors to Thailand! Good news : Friendly associates of APPROACH from Bangkok are working hard on getting the Jazz, Rhythm & Blues etc. festivals to Hua Hin, to Thailand in general. We will update you on this endeavour.

TRAVEL IN THAILAND

Mae Hong Son Mountain Province

N

orth-west Thailand is home to one of the most spectacular sealed road loops in the world: the Mae Hong Son. It’s especially wellknown amongst motorcycle tourers as it features over 4000 bends, taking you up and over mountains, through forests and across bridges for its entire 660km length. By the loops end you’ll have climbed the equivalent of Mt Everest one-and-a-half times – perhaps that’s why it’s lesser-known amongst cyclists! Mae Hong Son is also a remote market town on the Myanmar border, revealing Buddhist temples framed by mountains, underground rivers filled with sacred fish. Mae Hong Son’s nickname is “the

city of three mists”. It is hemmed in by the high mountain ranges of the Shan Hills and is the most mountainous 10

province in Thailand, occupying 13,814 square kilometres (5,334 sq mi). The province is often covered with mist. Mae Hong Son town was originally established in the early 19th century as an elephant training camp as ordered by the then King of Chiang Mai.

stretched into neighbouring Myanmar. You will be seeing and experiencing more than you ever would, sitting passively on a train or a bus.

If you plan on a two days of leisurely driving, you may start out early from Chiang Mai heading North and turning West onto Route 1095, which would take you all the way to Mae Hong Son. Aside from the motorbikes, which keep on buzzing by on both sides of the car without warning, the trip should be quite peaceful. Continuing west, you will go through quiet villages, ascending gradually into pine forests, passing slender waterfalls that gush down the mountainside at each bend in the road. Every once in a while, the forest opens up to views that

which would enable you to drive with the windows open and without airconditioning.

At the tail end of the monsoon season and the beginning of sunny, cooler weather, you can catch a cool breeze

There are plenty of stores and stands on-route. Salted and sweetened dried mango and tamarind, coconut yogurt, and a Thai version of Rice Krispies Treats—round, crunchy rice cakes, decorated with drippings of caramelized palm sugar - any regional Thai delicacy you can think off is available along the roadsides. Pai, just over the halfway point on your journey. A small village made for walking, it’s located on the banks of a river of the same name. Pai’s proximity to trekking routes and hilltribe villages attracts the same global

TRAVEL IN THAILAND mix of adventurous travellers that first popularized Chiang Mai. The nascent tourism industry has spawned signs advertising MONKEY MAGIC CAFE and DRINK. COUCH. REGGAE. The town is still off the standard tourist route, but Pai has been “discovered” enough to have lodgings with hot showers and restaurants where you can eat decently—and safely. A bungalow type guest housing at RimPai Cottage, is conveniently located where the town’s main road dead-ends into the Pai River. A porch overlooks the river is made up for threadbare furnishings and dim lighting. Make sure you fall asleep under a mosquito netting. There is a Coffee shop, a tiny café owned by two Thai artists who moved there from Bangkok To the west, peaks rise out of the mist as if in a traditional Chinese landscape painting - and receded into the distance. The town of Mae Lana isn’t much more than a cluster of neat wooden houses with gardens, plus a small school and a temple. Mae Lana has caves, and from the town it is no more than a 20-minute walk into the jungle. For a small fee, you can arrange a guide.

Getting there: Though Mae Hong Son had lengthened its tiny runway to accommodate small jets and acquired a couple of nice hotels, its pleasures were still decidedly local and authentic. You may reach Mae Hong Son by early evening and enjoy a meal of local Kow Soi Curry Chicken and kanom krok ( Thai coconut Pudding) as a dessert. Driving back to Chiang Mai you may choose to take a different loop where most of the scenery is similar to before. Chiang Mai is 531 miles north of Bangkok; there are daily shuttle flights between the cities. The 217-mile route from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son is well-maintained and easy to drive; the trip took two days. Affordable rental cars are readily available.

Where to stay en route : Chiang Mai : The Imperial Mae Ping Hotel - 1600 Baht - doubles. Pornping Tower Hotel – 850 Baht - Doubles.

Mae Hon Son: Muang Pai Resort – 700 Baht - Doubles Teak A-frame cottages – 450 Baht - In the foothills about four miles north of Pai. Rim-Pai Cottage – 1,100 Baht - Basic accommodations with hot showers along the Pai River. Tara Mae Hong Son Hotel – 1,200 Baht - This 104-room hotel overlooks a lush garden and a small stream.

Where to eat in Mae Hong Son : Aroon Restaurant - A down-home favourite for northern Thai cuisine, just across from the old city moat. All About Coffee -The house-baked cakes and pastries at this café are perfect for breakfast. Bai Fern Restaurant - Fresh Thai salads and Chinese noodle dishes. July 2016 APPROACH

CARABAO

arabao band was firstly originated in Philippines by students named Mr. Yuanyong Opakul (Aed) and Kirati Promsaka Na Sakon Nakhon (Khiao) who first knew each other during their Academic Degree Course in Mapua University, Philippines where they had jointly formed a musical band name “Carabao”. The word “Carabao”- means buffalo - the Tagalog word used to call native buffalo of Philippines. Buffalo was the symbol of fighting, hard working and patience. In addition, buffalo was represented as labor as it was believed that labor was the world creator. Based on those reasons, Yuenyong Opakul had therefore used the word “Carabao” and buffalo head as symbol of his Carabao Band since 1977 onwards. After graduation, Kirati Promsakha Na Sakhon Nakhon had worked as machine price appraiser with a Filipino company for 6 years while Yuenyong Opakul returned Thailand to start his architectural work at the National Housing Estate Authority of Thailand and, at the same time, played music in the nighttime. Mr. Yuenyong Opakul then had resigned from his permanent work to devote all his times on music and persuaded his intimate friend, Kirita Promsakha Na Sakon Nakhon who was working with a Filipino company branch in Thailand to resign and jointly with him to build perfect Carabao band. The first album of Carabao was launched in 1981 named “Khee Mao”, having Aed and Khiao as the major leaders of the band. The name of songs in this album was influenced from Philippines, such as, “Lung Khee Mao”. The best song to introduce Carabao band was “Mon Phleng Carabao”. The first

12

APPROACH July 2016

song composed by Aed was “Thuek Kwai Thui” which was the song of one nominated person whose story was continuously narrated in all albums until it was regarded as the longest ballad song.

In 1984, Carabao was classed as the top range popular band with their historical fifth album named “Made In Thailand” because the contents of the songs was well responsive to Thai baht devaluation of the government in such age and the government’s policy to promote peoples to use Thai products. Made in Thailand album had arrogantly earned more than 5 million pcs. sold and Carabao was on tour concert both within the country and abroad. Moreover, in Made in Thailand Album, there was important and great change of the band members when Base player of President band – Anupong Prathompattama (Od) had finished his tour concert in USA and returned to join with Carabao while Pairat Permchalad (Rat) former Base player had resigned from the band.

HUA HIN CULINARY

S

unday brunch at the Hyatt Regency is a treat to the whole family on Sundays between 11:30 and 15:00. The brunch is at the McFarland House which is a restored two-storey 19th century pavilion that has been transformed into an airy beachfront bar and casual dining area. The classic timbers reaffirm its historic past that is now designed as an all-day dining venue overlooking the beach and capturing sea breezes to create a cool atmosphere. We chose to be seated on the upper floor of McFarland house with a panoramic view of the Gulf of Siam whilst indulging in a brunch treat. The food buffet has an assortment of continental food and snacks with a Thai streak here and there. Make no mistake, there was plenty of food to choose from and starting up carefully is recommended as you may not have room for the main courses. Delicious salads crowned the starters and cheese assortments, together with a great pastry selection made it difficult to fit in some of the attractive desserts. However, a coconut burger challenged our taste buds and we did not regret it. A free flow of selected house wines and a bottle of sparkling wine made us forget any plans we had for dinner.

Congratulations to the Executive Chef Christoph Trocker from Austria and his team and highlighting Pastry Chef Somboon “Boon” Sararat. The duo Maria & Chris performed live popular music and ballads throughout our lazy Sunday. We knew them from the Figs restaurant and late night lobby. Very relaxing with the beautiful soprano voice of Maria and the splendid guitar virtuosity of Chris. Sunday Brunch is every Sunday from 11:30 AM - 03:00 PM and is 1,950 Baht net per person inclusive of a free flow selected of house wines, beers and soft drinks or 1,800 Baht net per person, including a bottle of sparkling wine per two persons, home-made lemonade and iced tea.

THAI NATURE

The

Jungle Crow

Corvus Macrorhynchos

By Dr. George F. Grossniklaus

The jungle crow (Corvus macrorhynchos) is a type, may also be a group of closely related species, in the genus of crows and ravens (Corvus) which is distributed in large parts of eastern Asia.

T

he body length varies between 45-59 cm, with males slightly larger than females and slightly larger animals in the north and in the higher mountain altitude than animals in the south and in the lowlands.

The black beak is long, the upper mandible markedly curved forward, especially in males. It closes in the contour to the face to a noticeable level. The iris is dark brown, the legs stained black. The wings are relatively wide, shorter and wider than the sympatric (Sympatry (from Greek syn “together”, patris “Fatherland”) is called in biology a form of geographical distribution, in which the distribution areas of the members of two populations, subspecies or species, overlap so closely with related populations in the same geographical area , so that they meet and possibly may also intersect.), widespread genuine Ravens. The tail usually is rectangular shaped, somewhat wedge-shaped in animals from the Himalayas; this can only be seen with spread tail feathers, in flight.

Vocalizations

They reach a weight of about 450 to about 1000 grams. The plumage acts monochrome glossy black, depending on the regions slightly different with violet, blue or green hues, which goes back to the structural colors. This coloration is absent in young animals. On closer inspection, not clear visible on the terrains, is the base of their neck feathers, which are white or gray. 32

APPROACH July 2016

The sounds of the jungle crow is similar to those of the house crow. They are generally deeper and more resonant than those of their relatives. Usually they are a loud “kaaakaaa-kaaa” , but the crow expresses many more calls, e.g. those which are described as “kau kau” and those which can be confused with the drums by woodpeckers. The range of the Corvus macrorhynchos extends in the north to the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin and the adjacent

THAI NATURE East Siberia and eastern China, Japan, the Himalayas (Afghanistan and northern Pakistan) regions, almost all of Southeast Asia to Java, Sumatra and Timor in the south. Even Sri Lanka and the Andaman Islands are inhabited. In the West, the range extends along the coast to Pakistan, earlier occasion to the Iranian Gulf Coast. The species reaches in the Himalayas over 5,000 meters above sea level. The jungle grows habitats are forests, parks, gardens and urban areas with scattered trees.

Nuitrition The birds are extremely variable when it comes to ingestion. On their menue are small animals, alive or dead, as well as vegetable foods, which they find on the ground or in trees.

in March or April. The eggs are incubated 17 to 19 days until the young birds hatch. Only females incubate, but both sexes are involved in the food supply and the defence of the territory. The young birds fledge after 35 days. The nest of the crows are parasitized from cuckoos species, Indian Koel (Eudynamys scolopaceus). The birds stay and form large groups (up to thousands of animals) at berth. Great flocks are especially at dusk gathering on the main dormitories. These dormitories are equally haunted throughout the year and are used mainly by non-breeders.

In urban areas of Japan they are perceived as a plague because they tear open garbage bags and looking there for food. They are more specialized in cities and towns areas, as carrion crows . In India, they are less common in settlements than the similar house crow (Corvus splendens) and likely to be found in rural areas or small villages, with loosely tree population.

Courtship, nest building and parental care Large-billed crows form solid pairs and nest individually. Foraging animals often form small teams, in India jointly with glossy crows. The animals join and form outside the breeding season often large swarms which are resting together. In the breeding season the pairs defend their territories, not only against fellows, but also against other crows species like the carrion crow (Corvus corone)

In a study of calls, from Jungle crows in the Indian Himalayas, Jochen Martens and colleagues could distinguish two clearly separate groups. One in the higher elevations and to the north and east, they called it japonensist, and a more south and in the lowlands spread, called by them levaillanti. These forms are used by many authors. Both groups are also morphologically distinguishable easiest on the colour of the spring base of the neck feathers; the white in the north / east region, the grey in the south / west region. The nominate form is, in the view of Ernst Mayr, only spread on the Malay Peninsula to Timor, so according to Dickinson and colleagues the name for the north-spread animals, should not be used.

The nest is built high in trees on branches. Here, peripherical trees are preferred in forests, but also accepted are scattered trees, standing in settlements. Nesting materials are grasses, wool, rags, vegetable fibre and similar materials. The nest is applied in a crotch of the tree and has the shape of a shallow cup. Both sexes participating in the nest construction. The nest contains four to five, rarely up to seven eggs. The eggs are round to slightly oval. The base colour is a pale blue-green and the eggs are reddish-brown, pale sepia and gray mottled, speckled and striped. They have a size of 2.7 cm to 3.7 cm. The breeding season is normally in spring, depending on the region from February to May, but usually July 2016 APPROACH

PROFESSIONAL FUND MANAGEMENT Do you need it?

By Jerry Mcmenamin

ver the many years I have been involved in Offshore investing there have been many changes.

From all my experience in this market my belief is now that the most important ingredient of any

When I first came to Thailand 20 years ago I worked for a company in Bangkok called “Collingwood” who were later sold to the South African insurance company Old Mutual International.

investment is the fund manager who will continue to do his work irrespective of where the investment is based. When I sold these companies products investors expected me to have the investment expertise to grow their portfolio. Even though I had a grounding in portfolio management I must admit that my expertise was not in that area which I have stated already I now believe to be the most important.

Old Mutual then withdrew their products from the Thai market and left many investors to be serviced from abroad. Most brokers then turned to Royal Skandia who appeared to have the full range of products to suit the international investor. They traded successfully in Thailand for over a decade until they were bought by guess who? Old Mutual International. So you probably know what happened next. Old Mutual withdrew again from the Thai market. I won’t make the assertion that they have abandoned their Thai investors again as they continue to service existing customers from Hong Kong and the IOM. Some investors may feel a little unsettled by this especially those investors long abandoned by their original brokers.

Like all brokers in Thailand none of us were regulated by any financial authority, so unless the individual involved had high integrity they were likely to place their investors’ money into the funds that paid the most to the broker not the investor. I’m not saying that this happened a lot but I know that it happened. The galling thing for the average well intentioned broker was that these so-called International white as snow companies supposedly had done their due diligence on the funds that went bad but when the sugar hit the fan they abrogated all responsibility and let the investor take 100 percent of the hit.

How can you get out of this mess? If you would like me to recommend a fully regulated chartered broker who would never put you in this mess let me know. Thailandexpatfinance@yahoo.com 34

THAI LEGAL

DRUG POSSESSION in

Thailand

K

nown for its tropical scenery and laid back hospitality, most tourists wouldn’t think to research ‘drug laws in Thailand’ before they depart on their fantasy getaway. We see pictures of full moon parties on the southern islands and hear stories of mushroom shake trips in the northern hills, but quite infrequently do we hear about drug related arrests of tourists. Sure enough, these stories don’t make the ideal postcard images to send home to mom, but they do happen and visitors to Thailand should be aware of the steep penalties associated with drug use and possession in the ‘Land of Smiles.’ Under the narcotics act of Thailand, illegal drugs are defined and classified as either narcotic or psychotropic substances. These substances may be natural or synthetic varieties that alter or impair the psychological or physical state of the person who consumes the drug. Narcotics are specifically defined as substances that affect a person in such a significant manner that they require continual increase of dosage, experience withdrawal symptoms when deprived of the substance, and cause deterioration of health. The highly touristed southern islands are known for their full-moon parties. Thousands of young, buff bodies flock to these beaches during the full-moon (and now also on the half-moon and quarter-moon as well) to cover themselves in glow paint, dance to house music, and consume alcohol and drugs in excess. As you can imagine, no one goes into this experience expecting tragedy, but it does happen. Undercover police selling drugs to eager tourists, those already under the influence being taken advantage of physically, monetarily, and worse. Technically, For Schedule 1 and 2 Substances imprisonment of anywhere from 1-20 years and a fine of 20,000-400,000

baht may be applied. Steeper penalties are for intended or attempted importation or exportation sale. For Schedule 3 and 4 Substances imprisonment of 1-5 years and fines ranging from 20,000-100,000 baht may be applied.

Regarding narcotic substances, for Category 1, Substances (dangerous narcotics such as heroine,) 3 years-lifetime imprisonment is possible dependent on intent and fines of 20,000-1 million baht may be demanded. For Category 2 (ordinary narcotics such as morphine, cocaine, codeine, medicinal opium) substances the offender can face six months-10 years imprisonment and fines of 10,000-5 million baht. When it comes to drug laws in Thailand, ignorance is not bliss. If you are looking for an escape from reality on your upcoming trip to Thailand, fine, escape in the sanctity of a beach hut while sipping coconut water and enjoying a non take-out Pad Thai.

Stay away from drugs!

FINANCIAL

Cost of Living across the Globe The GDP (purchasing power parity) compares the gross domestic product (GDP) or value of all final goods and services produced within a nation in a given year. The per capita income, also known as income per person, is the mean income of the people in an economic unit such as a country or city. It is calculated by taking a measure of all sources of income in the aggregate (such as GDP or Gross national income) and dividing it by the total population. Below you will find a cost comparison between Hua Hin and a randomly chosen selection of cities around the world. The numbers may vary and would need to be updated regularly as they are influenced by weather, politics , economics and availabilities. The updates are per May 2016. ITEMS IN THB

HEALTH & WELLNESS

Ingredients in Our

Food While many of us like to think of America as fairly progressive, when it comes to some things they are be a bit behind the ball. Much of their food supply in the US is grown using genetically modified seeds, doused with a host of dangerous chemicals and then processed with ingredients that may cause damage to the body.

I

found in foods like potato chips and cereals

f you care about your health, reading labels is a must, especially when you think about the ingredients allowed in American foods that are banned in other regions of the world!

Synthetic hormones, Recombinant Bovine, is used to increase milk production in cows by about 10 percent.

Europe is a lot stricter when it comes to genetically grown foods and chemical ingredients.

Dairy farmers inject the animals with these genetically engineered hormones resulting in the cows often becoming lame, infertile and to suffer from inflamed and infected udders. The humans that consume the milk from these cows are exposed to a number of risks, including breast, colon and prostate cancer. Monsanto, American Cyanamid, Eli Lilly, and Upjohn, developed these products.

Europe banned MSG from restaurants whilst the US report waves it off as a harmless food taste enhancer. It is not banned in Thai and Chinese foods. The reason behind it may be more to do with politics and money than anything else! Butylated Hydroxyanisole is a preservative, which you can find in potato chips, lard, butter, cereal, instant mashed potatoes, preserved meat, beer, baked goods, dry beverage and dessert mixes, chewing gum, and other foods to prevent rancidity in oils and extend shelf life.

Oh, also: in rubber, petroleum products, and, of course, wax food packaging. It has been shown to increase the risk of cancer in animal tests and are banned from foods in countries throughout Europe as well as Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. These synthetic additives are typically

APPROACH July 2016

Using these synthetic hormones is banned in the European Union, Canada, and other countries due to the risks to animals as well as humans. Potassium Bromate is a bread additive found in foods like bread rolls, wraps, bagel chips and bread crumbs. It is used to help strengthen the dough which reduces the time required for baking, resulting in lower costs. It is produced using the same toxic chemical found in bromine, an additive linked to kidney and nervous system disorders, hearing loss, digestive problems, and even birth defects and schizophrenia. The agent has been

HEALTH & WELLNESS banned in the EU, Canada, Peru, Nigeria, Brazil, South Korea and China but not in the US. Azodicarbonamide The principal use of azodicarbonamide is in the production of foamed plastics as a blowing agent. However, As a food additive, azodicarbonamide is used as a flour bleaching agent and a dough conditioner. It reacts with moist flour as an oxidizing agent. This substance is found in breads, frozen dinners, boxed pasta mixes and a wide range of packaged baked goods. It is often used to enhance the texture of soft white breads like hamburger buns found at

fast food joints such as Burger King and McDonald’s. The chemical has been linked to allergies and asthma and is primarily used in foam plastics such as the material found in the soles of a sneaker. It is banned in the UK and many other European countries as well as Australia. In Singapore, adding this toxic chemical to food could get you 15 years in prison and a hefty halfmillion dollar fine.

body can lead to thyroid problems like hypothyroidism as well as cancer or autoimmune disease. The main ingredient in BVO is bromine, which is well-known to be corrosive and toxic as mentioned previously. BVO is prohibited in over 100 countries.

Olestra - Olestra is found in fat-free potato chips. This fat substitute was developed by Procter & Gamble as a way to create a “lighter” chip that is “better for you,” but it is said to cause a significant depletion of fat-soluble vitamins and carotenoids, which robs the body of vital micronutrients. Olestra’s side effects also include oily anal leakage. This disastrous ingredient has been banned in many countries, including the United Kingdom and Canada.

coal tar, something that is used to protect the shine of industrial floors and is used in head lice shampoos to kill the annoying insects. They are often found in processed foods like macaroni and cheese, colourful kids’ cereals, sports drinks and cheese-flavoured chips or crackers. These dyes have been linked to growth abnormalities, allergies, vital organ damage, hyperactivity in children, and a host of other health issues. Arsenic - Arsenic can be found in poultry as the FDA permits it in chicken feed to increase growth and improve efficiency in feeding the birds. It also causes them to appear pinker as it affects the blood vessels, which also gives them a more “fresh” appearance. It is classified by the EPA as a human carcinogen, and the EU has outlawed its use since 1999! This list should give you another reason to pay close attention to food labels— and, keep in mind, just because the FDA in the US says it’s okay, doesn’t mean you should consume it. Most of the above is banned in Europe as being unhealthy and a health hazard.

Artificial Colors - Artificial dyes like red 40, yellow 5 and yellow 6 have been banned in many other countries, but their use in the US has increased five times since 1995. Food colouring used to come from natural sources, and in Europe, food manufacturers use things like saffron and turmeric to create more vivid colours in their products. Most artificial colours are made from

Brominated Vegetable Oil - is used primarily to help emulsify citrusflavoured soft drinks, preventing them from separating during distribution. BVO, can be found in sports drinks and citrus-flavoured sodas like Mountain Dew. It acts as an emulsifier to prevent the flavour from separating and floating to the surface of the beverage. rturo Navarro is the PBI Tennis Director at True Arena Hua Hin. One of his main goals is to promote the sport to children. He has created a variety of tennis programs for children including afterschool programs, summers camps and private lessons. Afterschool programs are a great way to start learning tennis, improve athletic skills and have fun with friends. Children can play once or twice a week in the normal program, but we could also personalized a group and make more times a week. Summer Camps are a great opportunity for children to learn tennis, have fun and make friends. We are offering 3 sessions: June 27-1 July; July 4-8 and July 11-15. Children will be separated with others of similar age and ability. They will learn some fundamentals of the game as well as coordination skills that will help them become better athletes. Arturo has more than 10 years’ experience working with children of all ages. He starting coaching children in 2004 at UCLA Summer camps in USA and since then loved helping children improving their games. Private lessons are a very effective way to learn fundamentals, techniques and strategy. This is the quickest way to get to the next level. 44

Nutrition Facts for Kids Not only exercise but also healthy food and drinks are important. Fresh fruit is a better choice than juice While whole fruit contains some natural sugars that make it taste sweet, it also has lots of vitamins, minerals and fibre, which makes it more filling and nutritious than a glass of fruit juice. One small glass of juice provides a child’s recommended daily amount of vitamin C. Unfortunately, many children regularly drink large amounts of juice and this can contribute to them putting on excess weight as most commercially sold fruit juices contain preservatives and sugar.

Eating fruit and vegetables every day helps children and teenagers grow and develop, boosts their vitality and can reduce the risk of many chronic diseases - such as heart disease, high blood pressure, some forms of cancer and being overweight or obese. Drinking water is the best way to quench kids thirst. Even better, it doesn’t come with all the sugar and energy (kilojoules) found in fruit juice drinks, soft drinks, sports drinks and flavoured mineral waters. Drinking pure water instead of sweetened drinks also prevents dental problems! July 2016 APPROACH

MOTORING

The

SUPERCAR Experience

There are multiple ways to measure sports cart excellence. Although speed is a true modern sensation, there is comfort, safety, road holding and quality. Although Porsche is undoubtedly the absolute quality sports car, undiscussed, it is not the fastest in a straight line. But then again we don’t run on straight lines all the time.

Here is the editor´s choice of the top 7 Supercars, regardless of top speed.

Porsche 918 Spyder 220+ mph - 350 kmh - Hybrid

Although the GT-9 - R Porsche is faster (265 mph - 425 kmh) , the Spyder is powered by a naturallyaspirated 4.6 litre V8 engine, developing 608 horsepower (453 kW), with two electric motors delivering an additional 279 horsepower (208 kW) for a combined output of 887 horsepower (661 kW). A top speed of around 340 km/h (210 mph) and 0 60 mph in 2.5 seconds.

Price in the USA $ 485,000 – THB 31 Mio.

Hennessey Venom GT 270 mph – 435 kmh

This combination of a Lotus Elise chassis and 1,244hp 7.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, and you have the fastest production car in the world. Depending on your definition of “fastest” and “production car,” that is.Hennessey recorded a 270.4-mph run at the Kennedy Space Center last year, but only in one direction. To be considered legitimate, record attempts usually require one run in each direction. An average is then taken to account for wind conditions. 0 - 62 mph within 2.8 seconds only and accelerate from zero to 200 mph in 14.51 seconds.

Yours for $1.2 Mio – THB 43.2 Mio

Bugatti Veyron Super Sport 260 mph - 416 kmh When Volkswagen purchased the Bugatti

brand, it had one goal: build the fastest production car in the world. The original Veyron achieved that goal, and with a price tag of $1.7 Mio – THB 61.5 Mio, and a quadturbocharged W16 engine producing 1,000 hp, it also boasted the most superlatives of any production car.

50

APPROACH July 2016

McLaren F1

MOTORING

241 mph - 391 kmh

The F1 is more than just a former world’s-fastest car. With its carbonfiber body, gold-lined engine bay, 6.1-liter BMW M V12, and center driver’s seat, it just might be the coolest car ever made. The F1 blasts to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds. Zero to 200 mph takes 28.0 seconds.

Price: $ 815,000 – THB 29 Mio

Aston Martin One-77

The One-77 is the most extreme road-going Aston ever, and the fastest. It may share a front-engined layout with “regular” Astons, but the One-77 is a completely different animal. Only 77 examples were made, and each sports a 7.30-liter V12 producing 750 hp. Like the chassis, it’s based on an engine used in lesser Aston production models, but it’s both lighter and more ferocious. Aside from its performance and jaw-dropping good looks, the most remarkable thing about the One-77 may be that Aston was able to create a Hypercar without making many compromises. The vehicle has a top speed of 220 mph and can easily accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

COOLEST GADGETS

HOUSEHOLD & GARDEN GADGETS

The Aozora Blue Sky Coffee Press

The Aozora Blue Sky Coffee Press is conveniently small, and can add to your collection of brewing gadgets without breaking the bank or taking up much space. It weighs less than 40 grams, stands about 16.5cm tall, and is made of polypropylene, silicone, and stainless steel components. The idea is to put your grounds into the mesh basket, screw on the top, and leave it in your hot cup of water until the desired strength is achieved. Price: Around 750 Baht at Amazon.uk

The Flour Shaking Rolling Pin Making bread doesn’t have to be a sticky situation

While this isn’t a cheap kitchen tool, it’s a real time saver for those who really like to make sticky dough recipes. There’s also a ruler to make sure you’re not rolling anything out too thick or too thin! Thankfully this is dishwasher safe, and it can hold up to 3 cups of flour at a time. Just make sure you’ve dried this out fully before using it, or you’ll have a new sticky situation to deal with. This is made of ceramic, and is hollow with a rubber stopper at the end of the pin to let you put in or take out flour. On the opposing side is a shaker to let a dusting of flour escape from the rolling pin onto your mat or dough so you don’t have to take five minutes to get more. Price: 700 Baht at Amazon.uk

Weed Killing Steamer

The Weed Killing Steamer happens to be a lawn and garden steamer which will be able to help control common weeds using nothing else but ordinary tap water as opposed to harmful chemicals or backbreaking labor with a lawn mower. All that you need is to squeeze the steamer’s trigger, where it will then unleash a weed-wilting blast of super-heated 300º F steam. It takes all of just 5 to 10 seconds of treatment, and unwanted vegetation will immediately discolor and shrivel, before dying in 24-48 hours. Controlled field tests show that 100% of dandelions, crabgrass, and cudweed plants treated by the steamer were completely killed or severely damaged with a single application.

The Hurom Masticating Slow Juicer

This bad boy can process fruits, veggies, leafy greens, and even nuts if you put them in with some liquid. It’ll use 150 watts, and says that it is “practically silent” which I find very difficult to believe. Since this machine doesn’t mess around, the $261 (9,500 Baht) price tag seems about right as you will not only get more juice, but cleaning is as easy as pouring in water and running the machine since there’s a mechanism to sweep debris off of the grate.

Centara World Masters GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

2016 T

he Centara World Masters Golf Championship in Hua Hin was back with its 3rd edition. Joining in Hua Hin Thailand there were more than 500 golfers from more than 20 countries who share the love of the game and their thirst for fun.

The entry was open to all male and female golfers over the age of 35 with an official handicap. All golfers played a 72 hole single Stableford event, while “A” grade golfers are eligible to compete for the best stroke / gross. 56

APPROACH July 2016

Stableford is a scoring system used in the sport of golf. Rather than counting the total number of strokes taken, as in stroke play, it involves scoring points based on the number of strokes taken at each hole. Over US $30,000 in prizes and lucky draws were given away at the gala presentation dinner.

Banyan Golf Club, designed by Pirapon Namatra, has beautiful views of the Gulf of Thailand from the hills just south of town. The teak clubhouse has a fully stocked pro shop and changing facilities and a restaurant offering international cuisine, overlooks the 9th and 18th greens. The club’s signature hole is the par 3, 15, with a dramatic sea

Much more than just a golf tournament, there were lively social and entertainment events every night. International acts highlighted the welcome and farewell celebrations. Thailand’s biggest 19th hole moves each night to stunning rooftop, beach, and poolside settings. A decadent farewell dinner caps off the fun filled week. The tournament was held at the Banyan Golf Club , The Black Mountain Golf Club and the Sea Pines Golf Course.

The Black Mountain Golf Club’s clubhouse and international cuisine, is an ultra-modern example of pure luxury and convenience that will make the choosiest golfer prune with excitement at the end of each round, no matter how well or badly they played. The aim of Black Mountain was to create a golf course that looks as natural as possible and maintains many of the features of the site. The most important features are the natural creeks that run throughout the course and the natural rocks that have been used as design features on many of the holes. As many of the original trees as possible have been

a test for the top golfers in the world but also very playable and enjoyable to the average golfer. The Sea Pine Golf Course is the newest course in Hua Hin. Located about 9km south of Hua Hin on the Suan Son Pradiphat Military Camp, this course and the camp were built to provide recreation facilities for the Thai Army. The beach is long and clean and there are bungalows for rent. The course is also open to the public. Located on the beach, this course offers great challenges on the six holes along the beach. Divided by the railway line, small hills on the west side of the tracks provide some relief from the winds. The sea views from the course are quite remarkable and the clubhouse takes advantage of this and also serves up good Thai food.

Muhammad Ali A tribute to The

Greatest

Muhammad Ali has passed away at the age of 74

The former world heavyweight boxing champion died in a hospital in Phoenix in the US state of Arizona. Ali (former name: Cassius Clay) is widely regarded as one of the most significant and celebrated sports figures of the 20th century. From early in his career, he was known as an inspiring, controversial and polarizing figure both inside and outside the ring.

“I float like a butterfly, and sting like a bee” was his most famous phrase.

Ali had a respiratory illness, a condition complicated by Parkinson’s disease. Historic matches were “Rumble in the Jungle” and “Thrilla in Manila” which will go down boxing history. Muhammad wanted young people of every background to see his life as proof that adversity can make you stronger. It cannot rob you of the power to dream, and to reach your dreams.” At Ali´s funeral, there were rousing tributes paid to the boxing legend at a memorial service in his home city of Louisville. Ex-President Clinton and Actor Will Smith were the main speakers at the ceremony. Former boxing Champ Lennox and Mike Tyson were among the pallbearers. 13,000 guests attended the service and most the town residents were lined up as the procession drove through the town.

A short list of Ali´s boxing career: 1960 – Ali Won light heavyweight gold at the Rome Olympics as Cassius Clay. 1964 – Ali beat Sonny Liston in the seventh round to win his first world title 1964 – 1967 World Heavyweight Champion 1974 – 1978 World Heavyweight Champion 1978 – 1979 World Heavyweight Champion 1981 – retired, having won 56 of his 61 fights Muhammad Ali quotes: “I am a man who never sold out his people. But if that is too much, then just a good boxer. I won’t even mind if you don’t mention how pretty I was.” “What’s hurting me - the name Islam is involved, and Muslim is involved and causing trouble and starting hate and violence. Islam is not a killer religion, Islam means peace. I couldn’t just sit home and watch people label Muslims as the reason for this problem.” - Ali describes his distress in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the US.

“I was never too bright at school. I said I was ‘The Greatest’. I never said I was ‘The Smartest’.” - Ali almost sounds modest about his achievements at school.

“It’s hard to be humble when you are the greatest” –“A man of character, faith, dignity and professionalism”

- Wladimir Klitschko, one of the greatest heavyweight boxing champions of all time.

Muhammad Ali was crowned “Sportsman of the Century” by Sports Illustrated and “Sports Personality of the Century” by the BBC.

“No sportsman has touched more lives” 58
