Below is a summary of a visit to the new mill in April 2012 by Will Leschen on behalf of SARNISSA - this should be read in conjunction with the video shot on the same day and now freely available on the main SARNISSA website video page and also on YouTube. The Israeli company Raanan Fish Feed opened their new purpose-built 1500 sq m feed mill at Prampram near Tema in November 2011. They have now constructed an analytical laboratory facility on site where all feed ingredients, raw materials and final product can be quickly and efficiently analysed. The new mill is now beginning to supply Ghana’s growing commercial aquaculture sector and is especially well located to supply the expanding tilapia cage and associated hatchery production sectors based on or close to the Volta lake, which is Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest man-made water body. By March 2012 the Feed mill was employing 45 staff (including 40% female) who are primarily local Ghanaian but also including some expatriates from South Africa Israel and Belgium. It is now producing a range of feeds for both tilapia and Catfish, beginning with fine Super Starter feeds at 58% protein through a range of on-growing extruded floating pellets for growers ranging from 30 -40% protein 2, 3, 4, 6 mm.

Some ingredients and raw materials are sourced in country including fish meal, whilst the vitamin and premixes are imported from Israel. Presently (by Sept 2012) the mill is producing 500MT of feed per month to meet in-country demand and West African export, primarily from 1 X 8 hour shifts with a production run of 20 MT of an extruded pellet being made on the day of my visit. The plant has the current capacity to produce up to 64 MT per day using one US-made extruder with conditioner which is capable of producing 4MT feed per hour. In the future the factory has the capacity to buy in and install another extruder which can double production to over 800MT per month. In terms of markets, feed from the mill is primarily being sold in Ghana and Nigeria. However, since it’s opening in November, the mill has also supplied feed to neighbouring Cote D’Ivoire, Togo, Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone. Raanan has set up two retail outlets in nearby Tema and Ashaiman and also sells its feed to six other independent commercial dealers located throughout southern Ghana. As demand and supply increase, Raanan are aiming to keep their feed at the same price throughout Ghana, whilst a number of companies and individual fish farmers are coming to the mill at Prampram to collect up to 1MT (50 X 20kg bags) at a time with their own or hired transport. For the future, Raanan are planning to open a farm-based

By June 2012 a new laboratory facility has been completed at the Prampram site, enabling regular daily testing and monitoring of ingredients and feeds to ensure quality control. The new laboratory, a 250 000 US$ investment, offers a guarantee to West African fish farmers that feed quality is being monitored. The lab is an important tool for the quality control of the final product and also for the incoming raw materials. Raanan Fish Feed WA is also ISO certified and meets the best international standards of production. The analyses carried out on the production line give accurate results on:

R&D Centre (associated with a commercial cage fish farm on the Volta lake) where feed batches and different feed formulations will be tested on farm under commercial conditions and resultant protocols produced. Six cages will experiment and approve feed protocols, protein content, new raw material and formulations balanced by the Raanan nutritionist. Also Raanan is creating an Aquaculture Training Centre outside Kumasi. The Raanan Training Centre aims to teach to the backyard and small farmer the basics of fish farming and show how to improve their profitability, technical level and production. Raanan as a company endeavours to give technical assistance and to organize workshops to share technical information, ensuring that customers will use their feed efficiently and thereby increase their production.

According to a recent research the aquaculture industry has the highest increasing speed in the world feed industry. Its booming development brings aquatic feed to people’s attention as it plays the significant role in aquatic animals healthy growth. Among the various types of aquaculture feed, it is the extruded feed that win most popularity due to its obvious advantages such as advanced extruding process, palatable flavour, easy digestion and wide application to aquatic animals. The innovative extruded feed processing technology will largely reduce fishermen cost on aquatic animal feeding which accounts for 80% of their cost, thus it can bring them greater profit by way of less investment. We will introduce extruded aquatic feed processing in details.

1.3 Because of the appearance, aquatic feeds can be divided into powdered feed and granular feed; and based on the different processing technologies, granular feed can be classified into extruded aquatic feed and pressed aquatic feed. 1.3.1 Among aquatic feed classification, the powdered feed and granule feed are commonly used in fishery and granule feed is more popular because of its higher dissolve-loss ratio. Although powdered feed is beneficial to food taking and digestion for some animals, it dissolves easily so that brings contamination to water and trouble in cleaning. Thus granule feed is the ideal choice.

1. Aquatic feed processing technology - brief introduction

Aquatic Feed Introduction and Classification Aquatic feed refers to all kinds of aquatic animal feed in seawater and fresh water. The classifications are as follows: 1.1 According to the buoyancy in water, aquatic feed is categorized into sinking feed, floating feed, and slow sinking feed. 1.2 Due to different feeding objects, aquatic feed is classified into fish feed, shrimp feed, frog feed, etc.

Manufacturing aquatic feeds is a little more complex than that of common feed. There are mainly two technologies used in aquatic feed processing: pelletizing and extrusion technology. the whole aquatic feed production process, they have the similar working flowchart, which are grinding and blending, feed producing, drying and cooling. Here is the complete processing flowchart. Grinding means to crush grains like corn, wheat and soybean into powder. Feed hammer mills achieve this process. Feed grinding is beneficial for the mixing operation and can improve the raw materials nutritional utilization. Generally, the smaller, the better. Blending is the process of mixing proportioned raw materials tighter to obtain a homogeneous mixture. Additives or micro ingredients are added at this step to increase its stickiness and nutrition. During this blending process, feed screw belt blender or double shaft feed mixer is the most commonly used equipment.

2.1.1 Wet extrusion and dry extrusion We have two types of extrusion methods: wet extrusion and dry extrusion. The exact difference between them is whether there is steam preconditioning in feed processing stage. Wet type extrusion processing needs a boiler to offer steam for the conditioner so as to ripen the raw material in advance. The output of wet aquatic feed is higher than the dry type feed in the case of same power consumption. Dry extruders are used in processing low moisture, highly expanded starch products and dry feed pellets are stable for relatively long periods & convenient for storage. We manufacture extrusion feed machines which can produce both wet and dry aquatic feed.

Feed forming stage. Uniformly blended feed materials are fed into conditioner and pressed on a die with fixed size holes. While extruded feed forming process is in fact the interaction of heat, water and pressure that makes raw material coagulated because of the sudden change of temperature. Heat and water both exist in vapour form to soften protein and starch and bond them together. (4) Drying and cooling. Both extruded feed and pelleted feed should go through drying and cooling stages. Feed particles discharged from pellet machine or extruding machines are fragile and humid which are not convenient to convey and store. Drying and cooling can lower down the excrescent moisture and increase their strength. If coating is needed, coat feed particles after drying stage because high temperature can help feed absorb animal oil and fat. After cooling, preserve feed particles in dry and ventilated room for use. 2.1 Aquatic feed extrusion technology The extrusion process of aquatic feed is essentially a cooking process during which the starch-containing components are decomposed and the proteins are denatured. Raw materials are strongly impacted by the high speed rotating shaft and fully cooked by the heating system where the temperature in extruder can reach up to 120-170°C. Finally, when the material is extruded through extrusion die, the pressure is released to normal state suddenly and the pellets are expanded into puffed form. In addition, the density and length of extruded pellets can be adjusted according to customers’ requirements. Extruded feed has various forms: floating feed to sinking feed.

2.2 Extruded feed merits *Increasing the feed utilization rate. Most aquatic animals have a relatively simple digestive system which is such a key point when choosing feed for them. Extrusion technology can improve starch gelatinization degree, and thus makes the extruded feed fragrant and palatable, so the feed taking rate is increasing. At the same time, the protein in vegetable protein feed can be degenerated after heating, while this change will make the protein molecular grow larger and increase the contact with enzyme in animal body and is good to aquatic animal digestion and absorption, which turns out that the nutritional ingredients digestion rate is increased by 10%-35%. *Good to the environment. Extrusion feed is stable in water. The extrusion technology makes starch inside feed materials gelatinization and protein unionization which produces sticky aquatic feed and their stability can reach more than 12 hours (36

hours-the longest stable time), in this case, the nutrition ingredients dissolve or lose amount is decreasing a lot. Data suggests that adopting extruded feed can save you 5%-10% aquatic feed amount compared to powdered feed and pelleted feed. Extrude feed stability reduces water contamination in this way. * Reducing sickness. There are harmful microorganisms in raw feed material such as Aerobic raw material, Neutrophilic bacteria, escherichia coli and salmonella, etc. especially in animal feed materials. While extrusion process creates high temperature, high moisture content and high pressure and can kill most of the harmful organisms. It is revealed that extrusion process can kill escherichia coli from 10000 to less than 10 per gram. The salmonella can be killed completely when temperature is above 85°c. *Convenient to feed. The floating feed can stay at water surface for a long period of time so that there is no need to settle special stands for feeding but feed them at a certain stand. Fish will emerge from water when eating and we can directly watch and adjust feeding amount in time; fish growing and healthy condition can be attended, too. Therefore, extrusion food feeding is a scientific way to raise aquatic animals-saving time & cost and increasing productivity. * Wide application. Extrusion feed has three types which are floating feed, slow sinking feed and sinking feed. About 80% aquatic animal such as shrimp, salmon, tuna and so on like sinking feed; while catfish, tilapia, eel and most other young fish prefer floating fish feed. What’s more, extrusion feed can satisfy some special requirements like low moisture content feed and high fibre feed which can be produced easily during extrusion. Thus extrusion feed seems a cost-effective choice for fishermen. No matter how many types of aquatic animal feed in the market, how to choose the better type is exact what we concerns. It is reasonable that you should take into consideration of aquatic feed processing technology, feed nutrition content, aquatic animals, and cost and profit, etc. Maybe extruded aquatic feed is a nice choice for your aquaculture sound development, it totally depends on you!

Due to the continuous development of aquaculture industry and the application of feed pellet the intensive aquaculture mode is widely adopted around the world. In order to improve feed utilization rate and better the water environment, aquatics breeders improve the feed pellet quality by optimizing the feed formula and choosing the optimal feed equipments. Actually improving the processing technology especially the pelletizing technology can also improve feed pellet quality, feed utilization rate and economic effect. Main Factors Affecting Feed Pelletizing Technology Aquatic animals live in water area and the whole feed intakes are finished in water so the aquatic feed pellets should have good stability in water which is the big difference from the livestock feed pellets. Some breeders think improving the feed pellet hardness can increase the stability in water so they increase the ring die compression ratio of the feed pellet mills (1). But irrelevantly increasing the ring die compression ratio will increase the feed process difficulty and reduce the feed pellet quality. The correct solution is to improve the conditioning process so that the feed ingredients can be fully gelatinized before pelletization, the feed adhesion is radically improved and the problem of aquatic feed pellet stability is solved. When mentioned the quality of aquatic feed pellet most breeders pay attention to the feed pellet hardness. It is wrong to equal the feed pellet hardness to the feed pellet quality. Solving the problems of stability in water and feed pellet hardness to ensure the feed pellet diameter and length is the premise to produce high quality aquatic feed pellets. Modulation of feed ingredients is the critical control point of aquatic feed pellet quality. The stable production efficiency is also necessary for the feed pellet quality. So in order to produce high quality aquatic feed pellet the factors of raw material quality, steam control, feed conditioning, the choices of ring dies and compressing roller should be considered.

I. Raw Material The aquatic feed pellets (2) have higher requirements on adhesiveness which is conductive to the feed pellet waterproof so the raw materials should contain more fat, protein and starch which have good bonding and lubrication, less crude fibre, mineral substances and sugar. The feed ingredients such as corn, wheat, fishmeal, soybean meal, peanut meal etc should account for the majority of feed formula and the vitamins, rapeseed meal, cotton meal, mono-calcium phosphate etc should be accordingly reduced. II. Steam Control The aquatic feed pellets have waterproof requirements so the gelatinization degree of modulated feed ingredients needs to be accordingly improved. When the particle size is small the steam can easily penetrate the pellet and produce good adhesiveness. The crude fibres should be finely grinded so that they can absorb much steam during modulation, achieve better gelatinizing effect

and get through the ring dies. Thus aquatic feed pellets have higher requirements on grinding fineness. Aquatic feed pellet quality is primarily established in the conditioner not in the pellet ring die. The conditioning effect determines the feed pellet quality. During conditioning period the raw materials are softened and gelatinized, protein is touched with water to produce adhesiveness, the powder content is reduced, working life of ring dies is extended and the nutrients loss caused by friction heat is reduced. All the methods to improve the conditioning effect are revolved around the four factors of steam, conditioning temperature, moisture and time. The steam quality affects the modulation. Steam has tree types: superheated steam, saturated steam and wet steam. The feed modulation only needs the saturated steam which has high heat capacity than the superheated vapour. At the critical point of steam and water the condensation of saturated steam is instantaneous while the superheated vapour needs a cooling process. During the pelletizing period the residence time of feed ingredients in conditioner is less than 3 minutes. If using the superheated vapour the steam cannot be fully cooled and the materials cannot absorb sufficient heat and moisture. III. Feed Conditioning Feed conditioning is a short-time high-temperature process. When the conditioning temperature is high the starch of the feed ingredients can be fully gelatinized and the waterproof is greatly improved. The lower the conditioning temperature the worse the stability of aquatic feed pellet. So the conditioning temperature directly affects the pelletizing property of aquatic feed pellets and the feed pellet quality. According to the growth characteristics of aquatic animals the conditioning temperature of fish feed pellet is controlled above 85 °c, the crab feed pellet and shrimps feed pellet are controlled between 80°c and 90°c. Actually the conditioning time we often said refers to the residence time of feed ingredients in conditioner. The conditioning time of fish feed pellet is controlled between 30 seconds and 40 seconds, the shrimp feed pellet is about 180 seconds. Only the steam and feed ingredients mix and contact can the steam produces heat and moisture through condensation so it is the best that contact time of feed ingredients equals to the residence time. The effect of conditioning moisture should be valued. When feed ingredients absorb steam they absorb the heat and moisture released by condensed steam at the same time. The water content of feed ingredients before modulation should be controlled between 15% and 16.5% otherwise it is difficult to pelletize. Condensing 1% of high quality steam can make the feed ingredients temperature elevate by 15°c and 16.5°c. If the feed ingredients temperature is 30°c, the temperature can be achieved 75°c and 79.5°c after absorbing 3% of steam and the temperature can be reached 90°c and 96°c after absorbing 4% of steam. And supplying conditioning moisture by steam can lubricate materials and reduce energy consumption. The steam additive amount should be restricted. The lower or higher conditioning temperature makes pellet structure loose, increase pellet breakage ratio and pulverulent ratio and loose nutrition content. The conditioning requirements should be adjusted based on the different feed ingredients. The insulating layer is to prevent heat loss which influences the heat absorption of feed ingredients. So the thinking that insulating layer is not necessary in hot districts is wrong. The steam level and feeding amount should be balanced so as to prevent blocking pellet mills.

IV. Ring Die Aperture Ratio In the case of determined aperture and compression ratio the ring dies with more holes can improve the pellet mill performance. Melting process is primarily established in the ring die capacity. And the flux in melting time directly affects the ring die capacity. When the ring dies have less holes, increasing the ring die holes can increase the total volume of ring die bell-mouth within pressure area and the flux in melting time then improve the pellet mill performance. However the too high aperture ratio will affect the length of bell-mouth, reduce the flux in melting time. And such ring dies will cause the slipping and ring dies damage, reduce the pellet mill performance. The higher aperture ratio causes the phenomenon of difficult feed discharging. In fact the best solution is to improve the gelatinization, malacia and lubricity of feed ingredients and adopt the ring dies with appropriate aperture ratio. The pelletizing process of aquatic feed pellets needs the conditioning cylinder have homogeneous feeding, the feed pellet mill runs stably and the feed pellet size is same. The compression ratio of ring dies for fish feed pellet should be about 15, for crab feed pellet is between 18 and 20, for shrimps feed pellet is between 18 and 22. V. Ring Die & Compressing Roller The ring dies for aquatic feed pellet production widely adopt the stainless steel. The crude fibres in aquatic feed pellets can be softened and gelatinized after high-temperature modulation so the stainless steel ring dies with relatively lower quenching hardness can achieve better effect. Compared with other ring dies the stainless steel ones are tighter and more wearable, and have higher surface smoothness so they can suitably improve the hourly output, make the feed pellet surface more soft and ensure the variable coefficient of feed pellet diameter is smaller during the ring die lifespan.

The cooperation of ring dies and compression roller influences the working life of ring dies and the pelletizing efficiency. 1. The compression roller should be selected according to the aperture diameter, flute profile and pellet mill characteristics so as to achieve the optimal precision ratio between ring dies and compression rollers. 2. In the case of stable running and not affecting the capacity the space between ring dies and

compression roller should be loose. 3. The feeding speed should be controlled; the length and position of feeding scraper should be adjusted so as to control the distribution of feed ingredients layers. 4.The ring dies and compression roller should be termly changed and avoid overuse. 5. The extrusion system of feed pellet mill should have good stability. The factors affecting the quality of aquatic feed pellet include feed pellet equipment (3), feed ingredients quality and processing technology. Only by improving the process technology especially the pelletizing process, choosing the feed ingredients according to the growth characters of aquatic animals and choosing the appropriate feed pellet equipment can the quality be improved.

POSITIONING FOR PROFIT “Positioning for Profit" is the theme of the Asian Pacific Aquaculture Conference and Trade Show scheduled from 10-13 December 2013 in Ho Chi Minh City. The conference emphasizes the need for the whole industry to take a more strategic approach to expansion. Simply producing product and getting locked into selling it as a commodity is not the path for industry expansion into the future. New approaches are needed in all areas of business from governance through to research, from harvesting through to marketing, and from education right through the value chain to the consumer. The Conference, which is hosted by the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), organized by the Asian Pacific Chapter of World Aquaculture Society (WAS-APC), supported by RIA2, and AIT and sponsored by Uni-President (Gold), Biomin (Silver) and a number of special session sponsors, will have some unique features. A highlight will be the first appearance in Vietnam of Emeritus Professor David Hughes from Imperial College, London (a marketing expert) who, besides being the opening keynote plenary, will also conduct a workshop on seafood marketing. Can you tell us about the history of Offshore Mariculture? Offshore Mariculture is an international two-day conference on the offshore fish framing business that is followed, on the third day with a technical visit to a fish farm. It aims to assist those farmers who are either growing their offshore fish farming businesses or who are looking to move their business offshore and, as such, explores the progress and prospects for offshore aquaculture in European and international waters. On the final day, conference attendees were give a first-hand look at the booming Turkish aquaculture industry, as they were hosted on a tour of fish processing facilities; a boat trip out to exposed farm sites for seabass, seabream and tuna; and a walk-through of marine fish hatchery facilities in the Izmir area. A Statement requesting that United Nations’ FAO conduct an assessment of the access and operational frameworks for open ocean mariculture in the High Seas, and make recommendations as to how to better encourage work towards mariculture in waters beyond any one nation’s EEZs, was also drafted at the Conference which the Turkish government offered to formally convey to FAO. 4. What’s new for this year’s event? As well as tracking the progress of species and technologies for farming in exposed sites, this year’s programme will also focus heavily on investment as without this the sector will not see the growth needed to ensure the levels of production needed to feed the world.

Indian Aquaculture Industry - Present Scenario and Future Prospects by Dr Ibne Ali, M.V.Sc, IVRI, Assistant Project Head, Pixie Consulting Solution Ltd

With the production of 6.4 million metric tons of fish India ranks third in fisheries and second in aquaculture. Revenues from fisheries contribute 1.07% of the total GDP, 5.3% of agricultural GDP and earn around USD 1.24 billion. This accounts for around 3% of the total exports of the country and nearly 20% of the agricultural exports. More than 50 different types of fish and shellfish products are exported to 75 countries around the world. This sector gives an employment to nearly 14 million people and per capita availability reached 9kg per annum which shows high growth potential. This untapped potential is need to be harness through proper planning and technology intervention. Growing population of India poses great challenges to the developmental authorities and government. Fulfillment of nutritional requirements of the people especially children is the prime need of the time. Protein and energy malnutrition is very common in India but now government has taken many bold initiatives to curb this menace. One of the best examples is National Protein Mission which promotes the farmers to keep animals and increase animal protein production. Fish is the best and cheapest source of animal protein which helps in fulfilling the demand of quality protein. Further,

traditional crop, dairy and poultry farmers want to diversify their farming by including aquaculture. Diversification and high value produce could add new dimensions to the sector. Proper post-harvest handling, reduction of losses and hygienic primary processing are important to realize full potentials of the sector. Simultaneously, effective marketing arrangements are to be made to ensure adequate returns to the fishers and the farmers as also make available good quality fish at affordable prices to the consumers. The future development of aquaculture depends on adoption of new and innovative production technologies, management and utilization of less utilized water resources and proper market tie-ups.
