Corrections/Clarifications
It has been a whirlwind couple of weeks. First a fabulous event in Abu Dhabi and then a great weekend in Texas to wrap up the 2015 racing year in the U.S. Each event was courtesy of the generous sponsorship of the Sheik Mansoor Festival and DIAR/Shadwell respectively. Credit goes to both of these organizations for each having a vision to promote and expand the sport of Arabian racing worldwide. We in the U.S. are very grateful as without these sponsorships racing here would likely be in dire straits.
When So Big Is Better won the Delaware Park Arabian Classic (G1) we thought, at age 11, he was the oldest racehorse of any breed to win a graded stakes...much less a grade 1. Well, that is true...to a point. Eleven is the oldest age for a grade 1 winner of any breed, but So Big Is Better wasn't the first horse to do it. It was, in fact, Mr Full Service. Remember him? Foaled in 1992, Mr Full Service (Sam Tiki x BW Ali Catt, by ZT Ali Baba) was owned by Bill and Cathy Waldron and trained by Bill as well.
Personally speaking, this was my first trip to the Middle East. I found it to be quite an extravagant experience. It is certainly a different world with unique customs, climate and topography but regardless of where you go in the world there is one thing we can agree on and that is the love of the Arabian horse.
Mr Full Service raced for 9 years to a record of 73(20-1615)7-19, $342,597. He was named Darley Champion Older Horse in 1998.

Desert sunsets are truly spectacular and I was fortunate to witness two of them. The horses are incredibly beautiful and well cared for. The race track was first class and the racing there top notch. It was also great to see the "international family" again. The DIAR stakes at Lone Star Park a mere week later brought people together much like the Arabian Cup Championships did a decade ago. It was great to have a night of Arabian racing once again in this country. All four races were very competitive and exciting to watch.
Over the next few years he continued to race sparingly and in 2003, at age 11, Mr Full Service won the Arabian Cup Championship Sprint (G1) at Delaware Park. Thus he was the oldest graded stakes winner of any breed. So Big Is Better tied with him in 2015. I guess we'll have to wait and see if So Big Is Better tries to set the record at age 12. Our apologies to Bill and Cathy Waldron and to Mr Full Service himself, for overlooking this great accomplishment.
The open house at Mandolynn Hill Farm the next day was relaxed and fun. It also gave me the outstanding opportunity to meet and talk with Mr. , Chairman of Shadwell, and Richard Lancaster, Shadwell's racing manager. Personally, it was my first trip to Texas in several years and it was fun to visit with the "national family". Events such as these are great at bringing us together to celebrate the Arabian. Also found in the pages of this issue are a letter to the editor from Todd Moak and Mike E.'s column which are both about the HARC program and some of the feelings surrounding it. Please keep in mind that the opinions are theirs alone. However, the magazine presents them in an effort to engage in constructive dialogue. We are never all going to agree, but in the end I do believe we are all interested in the same thing - successful Arabian racing.

Letter to the Editor... From Todd Moak HARC – Who Goes There? We like the catchy title and think many will appreciate a humorous twist on our approach to a serious subject. That subject is the formation of HARC, an organization of which many of you are aware, the acronym for Heritage Arabian Racing Club. We first became aware of HARC when we read two announcements (authors not noted) printed in the May 2015 issue of the Arabian Finish Line. The first announcement under the title “News You Should Know” is a statement that the AJC (Arabian Jockey Club) is “excited to be a part of the Heritage Arabian Racing Club (HARC).” We feel that the AJC’s support of an organization that excludes a stallion accepted by its country’s registry is offensive. The AJC is supporting an organization that, without any factual basis, rejects the progeny of the leading Arabian race sire for 10 years in the USA. It should be noted that the AJC receives funding from AHA, yet chooses to support an organization that excludes the AHA’s documented Arabian purebred, Burning Sand. (Editor's note: Since that press release was originally printed, the AJC has clarified its position with HARC. In November's "Just Talkin", Evie Sweeney stated that HARC has no connection with the AJC. And although the AJC is not involved in the administration or development of the program, they will be disseminating information about the program as part of their role of providing education and racing data for Arabian racing.") This introduction by the AJC is followed by a press release from HARC, stating how it came to exist and its purpose: “to support and promote racing for those who wish to preserve the purebred Arabian of traditional type and bloodlines and to ensure the long-term future of Arab horse characteristics, in the broadest terms, with the hallmarks of beauty, athletic ability, soundness and versatility.” The press release goes on to state that “It is recognized that recently, enormous strides have been made in Arabian racing through the concentrated use of certain highly selected and at times controversial bloodlines. The result has been a significantly improved racehorse that bears little resemblance to the original purebred, either in looks or in racing style and speed.”
We include these rather lengthy quotes for a few reasons. The vagueness of the statements is self-evident. However, they are also self-contradictory. Some of the issues – especially beauty – are subjective. What one might assume by using the term beauty is Arabian “type” – large eyes and nostrils, dished face, finer bones, etc. These traits or not “original.” They were achieved by select breeding; and breeding to achieve type, according to many veterinarians’ opinions, does not promote soundness. The use of the phrase “..at times controversial bloodlines” is extremely vague. To begin to comment on this, we would like to point out that controversies are many times started, not by any legitimate question, evidence or finding, but just by the fact that opinions differ and rumors fly! The founding members of HARC define a “HARC eligible” horse as any horse who is registered in a WAHO studbook but does not contain the blood in any generation of 6 named stallions. One of these stallions is Burning Sand. We will address specifically the issues regarding Burning Sand, as we do not have sufficient knowledge of the other 5 stallions to address with specificity the issues regarding their exclusion. Burning Sand is almost surely the most investigated Arabian race horse in the history of Arabian Racing in the USA. No evidence of impurity was ever established. He was registered by the same requirements of the AHR or AHA as was any other registered Arabian horse of his era. His registration and race record, while unduly stripped have long since been reinstated. To exclude Burning Sand from any program promoting “purity of the breed” is unjust. We recognize that in competitive sports, some will have an adversarial attitude. Like fans of teams in some sports – the attitude that their team is “good” and others are the enemy is fairly common. This attitude is part of how the word “fan”, short for fanatic, was derived. However, there are rules and standards which govern participation and qualification of participants in any sport. The established requirements of regulatory organizations, not the opinions of some of the participants, should be the standards for participation or exclusion.

Arabian Racing Will Miss... Virgule Al Maury, owned by Betty Jo and Paul Richards of Glencoe, Oklahoma, was sadly laid to rest and buried in his favorite pasture on their farm, Lone Chimney Ranch. Virgule Al Maury was an elite purebred Arabian Stallion imported from France, by Kesberoy and out of Valse Du Cassou by Baroud III. He was 26.
and they are grateful to have foals on the way for 2016 and to have secured frozen semen to carry on his legacy. Virgule Al Maury as a young racehorse with Jaci Wickham aboard.
His race record of 16(6-2-5)0-4 in England and U.A.E. was far surpassed by his ability as sire. Virgule Al Maury was the U.S. leading sire by earnings in 2004 and 2005, and remains today as the all-time leading Purebred Arabian French Sire in the U.S. He finished 2015 as the U.S.’s second leading broodmare sire. His most famous grandson running today is Paddys Day, by Burning Sand and out of the Virgule Al Maury daughter AK Loretta. Virgule Al Maury, a big chestnut stallion, was bred by Monsieur Alain Benarrous and born in 1989. He was originally owned by Godolphin Racing and then later by Darley Stud Management during his most prolific career at stud in the U.S.. Under the direction of Denise Gault of Racestreet Management Inc., he sired 248 foals from 1997 through 2008. Acquired by Betty Jo and Paul Richards in 2010, Virgule Al Maury lived out his final golden years well loved and enjoying life at Lone Chimney Ranch in Oklahoma. The Richards were successful in continuing his breeding career, best Arabian racehorses in the world. Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, Nivour De Cardonne won 6 of his 16 starts and was placed 7 times, in the UK and the UAE. He became the first Kahayla Classic winner for Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum in 2000. Shadwell Director Richard Lancaster said: “Nivour De Cardonne was an outstanding racehorse for Sheikh Hamdan. He had a special place in our memories as Sheikh Hamdan’s first Kahayla Classic winner. He proved a very good sire in the USA and we thank Cre Run Farm and Mandolynn Hill Farm for looking after him so well.” Upon his retirement, Nivour De Cardonne was imported to the US and stood at stud at Cre Run Farm in Virginia, where during his years there he sired multiple stakes winners and Champions including Our Machine, Dixies Valentine, A Ladys Man And Our Princess, among many others. Shadwell is sad to announce the death of one of its Arabian stallions, NIVOUR DE CARDONNE. The son of Manganate was bred in France from an outstanding family that has produced among the very

Last month I wrote about the Heritage Arabian Racing Club and promised to do a follow up column with commentary and historic reference about HARC and the somewhat related issue of Arabian breed purity. I will start out with the historic reference which takes the form of excerpts from two columns I wrote in early 1993. At the time we were dealing with what some referred to as "ringers" as well as the introduction of (what I think was) the first imported French runner, *Calin Du Louve. That French horse was the number two money earner in 1992, behind Victorias Secrett and ahead of horses like Oh By Gosh, Monarch AH and TC Tomtyr. He caused quite a stir back then and heated discussion about breed purity. Almost 23 years later, that discussion continues. From Arabian Finish Line (Jan/Feb, Mar/April, 1993) I have never been accused of breeding or running a "ringer". Unfortunately, I've never been lucky enough to have a horse that ran fast enough. The fact is that for the past decade I've been trying to breed Arabians that look like Thoroughbreds. Since a Thoroughbred can run a mile ten seconds faster than the prettiest Arabian show horse, I figured that's what a runner ought to look like. If successful, I'll win lots of races, earn lots of purses, and have a lot of people question the ancestry of my horses. Questions about parentage are not new to Arabian racing. Several years ago both Freds Revenge and Raf Oak had their papers pulled for not being the horses they were supposed to be. Both horses, after literally running away from their competitors, were the target of protest and complaint. The Arabian Horse Registry of America (AHR) conducted an investigation and determined that Freds Revenge and Raf Oak were not the product of their sire and dam. Their registrations were revoked and these speedsters were forced into early retirement. They left, however, with their pensions intact and several second place finishers feeling mighty upset and more than a little cheated. Calin De Louve and Tinkerbell are currently the subject of much speculation and rumor. When I asked the Registry about how complaints were handled, they responded "We do not run out and begin an investigation just because
someone complains. Rumors, hearsay, and the fact that a horse might look like a Thoroughbred or run a fast time is not enough to take action. People have to realize that Arabian race horses are being bred and trained better than ever before and that there are going to be some outstanding individuals." The Registry told me that at this time they do not believe that DNA testing is a viable means to test parentage, but they are examining it. If in fact DNA testing were found to be viable, it raises a whole slew of other questions about how to use it. If horses now accepted as purebred Arabians were found to be part Thoroughbred, what would be the consequence? If, let's say, *Orzel or Kontiki or Samtyr were found to be part Thoroughbred, would all their progeny's registrations be revoked? Who draws the line and where? An eighth? A sixteenth? A thirty-second? Because of the complex legal, political, practical and administrative concerns the Registry must consider, we shouldn't hold our breath waiting for an answer, There has been a lot of backside talk lately about the acceptance of French horses as "purebred Arabians". I have been told by some that are familiar with the situation that there is good reason to suspect that certain Arabian stallions accepted by the French Registry may not be purebred. I was told a story (which is all that it is - a story). It happened many years ago in a foreign land. There was a certain stallion that was small and pretty like an Arabian, except he was a very fast Thoroughbred. He was bred to several Arabian mares, their get were registered as purebreds, they came to America and outran everyone. The person who told me this believes it is true. But even that person agrees that there may be no was to prove its validity. Perhaps DNA testing is the answer. But, I think we ought to find out if it works first. Perhaps we can write strict conditions in our stakes races or rely on heavy handicaps to address the situation. I understand that owners and trainers are lobbying racing officials to add conditions to stake races to protect the purebreds. Unfortunately, I don't know who the purebreds are. Perhaps we can do all these things and hope it doesn't end up penalizing fast horses, good trainers

and honest breeders. In preparation for this column, I again talked (actually I did much more listening) to many within the industry with strong and diverse opinions about this subject. Strong and diverse are perhaps understatements. Having been a bit out of touch with racing for the last several years I was not aware that this remained such a hot button topic with many passionate advocates on all sides of the issue. Whether for the good of the breed or for concern about getting the wrong people mad (and the economic consequence of such), most of those I talked to did not want to "rock the boat". That being said, I believe the boat is rocking. In the last 20 years Arabian racing has become truly international, and this a truly international conundrum. I want to address three separate, but related issues: Ringers, Breed Purity, and HARC. I do not represent myself as being extremely knowledgeable about these subjects. Even after hours of conversations, pages of e-mails, and many hours on the internet (and of course if it is on the internet, it must be true), I have only cursory insight into the situation. To keep my word count down, I will not preface all my statements with "It is my understanding" or "I've been told", but most of what follows is an understanding of what I've been told. Ringer (ˈriNGər); "an athlete or horse fraudulently substituted for another in a competition or event". I think that with all the money and prestige involved with Arabian racing, it would be naive to think that "midnight breeding" or other types of fraud have not occurred within the breed. Just a year ago, the (US) Arabian Horse Association cancelled the registrations of the 2011 National and Reserve National Champion Half Arabian cutting horses. After a three year investigation, they were deemed to be quarter horses. As with Freds Revenge and Raf Oak, the horses had "no Arabian parent as indicated in their registration applications and subsequent Certificates of Registration". Dealing with "ringers" is relatively straight forward. But what if a parent or close ancestor is dead and parentage cannot be verified, or the "ringer" was introduced many generations back, or a country's registry is just not very diligent or inclined to conduct what would be an exhaustive and controversial investigation (not even taking into account the expensive lawsuits that would follow). I suspect that potential litigation played some part in AHR's decision making so long ago. Since 1974 The World Arabian Horse Organization (WAHO) has adopted this policy: "A pure-bred Arabian horse is one which appears in any pure-bred Arabian Stud Book or Register listed by WAHO as acceptable.” Prior to that, there
was much debate, as described on their web site, "some of the brightest minds in the Arabian horse world of the time wrestled with this all-important question, one that over the years has had many different answers in different countries, but never an internationally acceptable solution". WAHO accepted original members and the horses registered at face value, but now are being a bit more selective in allowing new members to join. At last count there were about 60 countries that have been accepted by WAHO. Interestingly, because the U.S. refused to accept horses of suspected impure blood that were already registered in a WAHO-accepted registry, the Arabian Horse Registry of America lost its membership in WAHO. Due to the economic and financial pressure of not being able easily access the international market, the AHA relented and joined WAHO in 2007. The International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing (IFAHR) was formed in 2009 for the “purpose of cooperation between all national and international Arab Horse Racing Associations throughout the world." On the IFAHR web site I found some additional information about their creation (the following was excerpted) "Everything was fine, Arabian racing was slowly getting bigger everywhere in Europe and Middle East, until difficulties occurred. A few horses had been registered by WAHO in a way that would make parentage verification by blood typing impossible. And now, these horses were participating in racing. People started complaining..... Since WAHO and ECAHO were not concerned with racing, they just could not understand our problems. The more we would complain and the more enemies we would make. After this situation lasted for some time, I finally realize that we had to create an international racing organization that could take its own decisions independently." On another web site I read an interview with an IFAHR Board member. He said, "...rumors about the bloodlines of at least three stallions are everywhere.... My personal opinion, however, is that it was impossible during the old days to trace the origins of any Arabian horse to establish its impurity or otherwise. Therefore, any arguments will remain mere allegations unless they are documented". That essentially was the same response I got from the AHR in 1993. I've been told that IFAHR is working on an agreement between its member countries that will stipulate the number of generations that each country can or will verify as being "pure". I don't know exactly what that will accomplish, but I don't think that they wish to rock the boat. Some countries can stipulate up to five or more generations, while others only two or three. The last I heard they were still try-

ing to decide where a generation started (with the horse or with its parents). It will be slow going. With today's technology, it is well within reason to believe that DNA testing could provide much information about a horse's "purity". We then come full circle to the question as to what to do with that information and where to draw a line (if one could be drawn). If you talk to someone associated with the Asil Club or Al Khamsa, they will tell you that less than 5% of the world's registered Arabians are truly pure and trace directly back to the nomadic Bedouin tribes of the Arabian Peninsula. If you search the internet for "Arabian Purity", you will find all kinds of conflicting evidence and accusations that the authors claim are accurate and true. Going back over 100 years no group is exempt; the French, the Russians, the Polish and the Crabbet horses are all subject to questions about their purity. And it's not just claims that some of these horses are not genuine Asil, there are the allegations that some of these horses are not genuine at all; frauds or "pseudo-Arabians" with a Thoroughbred in their ancestry. It may be impossible to accuse or defend a horse that died a century ago, but what about the horses that are running and breeding today? Amer, Tiwaiq and Burning Sand all came up as being questionable in the conversations I had the and in the things I read. The Heritage Arabian Breeders Club (HARC), without making any claim of being impure, have eliminated these three stallions, along with three more, as being ineligible to be part of their club and not participate in their bonus programs. In 2000, a group trying to resolve the AHR/WAHO conflict proposed that registered horses (not containing suspect bloodlines) be further identified as "Original Arabian" and that "OA" appear on their pedigree and in their databases. They went on to suggest that the Arabian Jockey Club (AJC) could use this "OA" designation for creating their own rules for selecting (or excluding) Arabian horses eligible for their competitions. This proposal was not passed. Twenty years ago, many American breeders wanted to exclude fast foreign horses from their stakes races because of concerns about purity and/or ringers. Today the UAE has certain bans in place for the racing of get by Tiwaiq and Amer. Some of these bloodlines are also excluded from invitation races. When you throw a party, you can choose the guest list. I make no accusations about these horses, I have no facts; but it would ingenuous to say that this is not an issue. Lastly, I want to comment on HARC and their desire to create races, incentives and encouragement for those who breed and race the traditional type of Arabian horses. Deir-
dre Hyde's interview has been translated into English and is now on the Heritage Arabian Breeders Club's Facebook page. Some have taken exception to the exclusion of the six stallions from their club based on their non-traditional speed and body type and believe that it is arbitrary and unfounded in fact. There is a letter to the editor in this issue which poses some valid questions about those judgments'. In my conversations with HARC supporters, however, I was impressed by their genuine desire to preserve traditional bloodlines and type (acknowledging that I'm not quite sure what traditional is) . Unlike some of the more radical viewpoints that I found on line, most HARC supporters did not look at this as solely a purity issue. There seem to be a genuine concern about protecting the gene pool, especially in emerging Arabian race horse countries where indigenous bloodlines are still the norm. Perhaps if HARC came along 20 years ago (or if the AHR approved the "OA" designation"), we might still have a few back yard breeders left here in America. Of course, we would then have arguments over *Orzel, Kontiki and Samtyr and their progeny. I believe that a privately funded organization like HARC can do whatever they wish. If their program helps expand Arabian breeding and racing , then God bless them. My impression is that HARC, in its early stages, has many proponents. In this magazine, there are those advertising HARC eligible horses and stallions at stud. I do not think they pose a threat to non-HARC horses. If you look through the pedigrees of horses running today, there are only a handful of HARC eligible horses even running. Perhaps that might change, but here in the U.S. and in the major racing countries, it's a long shot. A noble attempt, but a long shot. I wish them luck. It appears that the more things change, the more things stay the same. I do not expect to be writing this column 20 years from now, but I give full permission to some future columnist with the courage to write another follow up to this story and the one from 1993. I would guess that by then some new stallions will be producing race horses that will cut another few seconds off our current times. Whether they be a product of superb breeding decisions, genetic anomalies, or outright fraud, there will be claims and accusations just as difficult to prove.

This is Germ Warfare: The Ins and Outs of Cleaning & Disinfecting Your Horse Barn Every farm management program involves implementation of a horse health and welfare plan aimed at disease prevention. The main components of any plan include properly timed vaccinations, strategic deworming, optimum nutrition, and appropriate exercise. By including the practice of cleaning and disinfecting your barn on a regular basis, you will supply the best possible health care program for your equine. Ok, so you think this is going to be a short article because you can just clean a horse barn with the same cleaners that you use to clean your house, right? Not really. Most horse barns are constructed of and contain organic porous materials. Walls and ceilings constructed of raw wood or unsealed concrete block and floors of dirt, sand, clay, limestone, asphalt or concrete. This variety provides a multitude of pathogens with the capacity to hide within the cracks, crevices, and pores of these materials. It is not only important to select the correct chemicals designed to clean and disinfect the barn, those chemicals must also be safe to use in a horse facility. Cleaning and disinfecting are two entirely different procedures. A disinfectant cannot work effectively unless the area you want to disinfect is cleaned first. Organic materials such as soil, plant debris (straw or hay), milk, blood, pus, and manure inactivate some disinfectants or protect microorganisms from the disinfectant’s active ingredients. Chlorine-based disinfectants are especially problematic in this regard. The active ingredient in bleach, chlorine, is relatively quickly inactivated by organic debris such as manure or milk, at the concentrations used for disinfecting cleaned surfaces. This is why cleaning to first remove organic debris and dirt is so
important. How do we clean? The cleaning procedure may involve two steps - a dry cleaning followed by a wet cleaning. The process of dry cleaning removes the organic material (bedding and manure) before the wet cleaning occurs. With dry cleaning, the dirt, debris, and organic matter which might neutralize the disinfectant must be removed first. The facility must be thoroughly swept and/or vacuumed out from floor to ceiling. The sills, walls, and floors (asphalt or concrete) may have to be hand-scraped to remove any caked-on manure, food or debris. Scrape, scrub, and clean any permanently attached equipment such as waterers and feeders. Anything not securely attached should be removed and taken outside for cleaning and disinfecting. Wet cleaning involves the use of water and soap or detergent. Soap and detergents are good cleansing agents as they help penetrate and break up stubborn materials. Detergents also help disrupt the lipid envelope of some viruses, enabling the virus to be killed by the disinfectant. Wet cleaning involves four steps: soak, wash, rinse, and dry. Spray down the area (starting at the ceiling and working down to the floor) using a hose with a spray nozzle or a pressure washer. The soap or detergent can be added to the sprayer. Hot water (at least 200°F) is best but cold water will also work. Allow soaking time (10 – 20 minutes) to loosen the dried on debris. Now comes the part where you can build up those muscles by applying a lot of ‘elbow grease’ and scrub hard. Pay close attention to corners, cracks, crevices, and drains. After you have scrubbed off all debris and stains, then a thorough rinsing of the area with clean water removes any detergent and lingering organic debris. Let the area dry thoroughly. If the area has not completely dried, the excess moisture

inches below the surface. Let the floor dry completely and then add clean bedding. In cases where you may have had a stall with heavy pathogenic contamination, you may have to remove up to a foot of the top soil and then follow the same procedure.
Now it is time to disinfect the area with chemical agents that kill pathogens on contact. There are some basic principles to keep in mind with disinfection. First, ‘hard’ water (high levels of calcium and magnesium in the water) can neutralize the activity of some disinfectants. Check to make sure the disinfectant is labeled effective in hard water. For example, the label might read “effective in 400 ppm water hardness”. Thus, if your water has a hardness of 550 ppm and you use a disinfectant that is only effective up to 400 ppm…you have just wasted your time and money. Second, some disinfectants may only be active for a few days after mixing. Failure to make a fresh solution of disinfectant after it has been prepared for longer than a few days may result in using a product that is no longer effective. Next, disinfectants can vary in their activity against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. Therefore, you must know that the disinfectant you plan on using can kill the pathogens that are most common in horse barns. Lastly, check the expiration date on your disinfectant. Using an expired disinfectant will not insure its effectiveness.
So which disinfectant is best? The most commonly used disinfectants fall into the following classes (see Table 1). The major equine pathogens that are needed to be killed are listed in Table 2. Because we know that these pathogens are located in organic matter, we must use a disinfectant that is able to work in the presence of organic matter. Phenolic compounds will kill the equine pathogens in the presence of organic matter and does not lose its effectiveness in the presence of hard water. Effective phenolics must also have greater than 20% active ingredients. Two phenolics disinfectants that can be used in
For the disinfecting process, you should wear protective clothing, including long sleeves, long pants, gloves, eye protection and face mask. Carefully read the label instructions for the disinfectant and dilute it into a sprayer; label this sprayer and use it for this purpose. All disinfectants work best at temperatures above 65°F (not to exceed 115°F). Start at the top and spray the walls followed by ledges, sills, doors, windows and finally the floor. Allow the disinfectant to dry completely and do not rinse it off. Porous floors (dirt, sand, clay) are the most difficult to disinfect. Remove about a 2 inches layer off the top and soak the floor with enough disinfectant to reach 2 to 3

equine facilities are Tek-Trol® (Bio-Tek Industries) and 1-Stroke Environ® (STERIS Corp.). With potentially harmful pathogens ever lurking in our horse’s environment, a yearly barn cleaning and disinfecting is recommended as part of a normal preventative program for any equine facility.

Although most of the racing community probably didn’t know it, October 31 was the end of an era. Not just because Thoroughbred racing’s first Triple Crown winner in 37 years, American Pharoah, ended his career on the track with a Breeders’ Cup Classic win, but because it marked the last day of work for Louisville CourierJournal turfwriter Jennie Rees. Rees has served as an inspiration to many other people who write about racing, as a 34-year veteran at the C-J and a longtime holdout in a world where the traditional, shoe leather turfwriter is disappearing fast. She was added to the National Museum of Racing’s Joe Hirsch Media Roll of
Honor in 2014, at which time she was the five-time winner of the Red Smith Award for her Kentucky Derby coverage, and won two Eclipse Awards for her work, alongside numerous other recognitions. Although she’s extremely modest about the fact, Rees is also responsible for helping to break the glass ceiling in the profession for many of the excellent female racing writers who have come along since. Rees is quick to point out that she isn’t going away—she is one of several Gannett Co. employees taking a buyout, and plans to work in some sort of public relations capacity, perhaps as a horsemen’s advocate (she is married to trainer Pat Dupuy). Her disappearance does leave just one full-time racing writer at a mainstream daily paper—Alicia Wincze-Hughes at the Lexington Herald-Leader—which has led a few pundits to wonder if her

departure marks a death knell for the profession of turfwriting. It’s certainly true that the way national publications treat horse racing has changed over the past few decades. I was sifting through some vintage copies of The New Yorker at a rare book shop not too long ago and was surprised to learn that at one point the magazine had a regular column devoted to horse racing (and it was not limited to Thoroughbreds, either). Whenever I’m digging into a historical feature for my day job, I’m both impressed and delighted to see how substantial the Keeneland Library’s clippings files are for a person or horse from 30 or 40 years ago—sometimes overflowing with snippets not just from The Blood-Horse or Daily Racing Form, but from major dailies or mainstream magazines. Rees told Thoroughbred Daily News that she doesn’t believe her transition out of turfwriting should signal an end to the profession, and I agree with her. I think instead her departure is one more sign that the business of writing about horses is changing, just as the business of writing news is changing. According to a Pew Research Center project released in 2013, 50 percent of the public now cites the internet as their pri-
mary news source, and that proportion jumps to 71 percent amongst 18 to 29-year-olds. Turfwriting has been no exception to this trend, as the Thoroughbred Times went out of business in 2012, and the average copy of the Blood-Horse is now almost thin enough to shave with. But meanwhile, web and social media presence for established publications like the Blood-Horse and for newer publications like The Paulick Report are going strong. There is still young blood choosing the profession, as evidenced not just by twentysomethings like me and Joe working fulltime but also by the internship programs at the BloodHorse and the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters, which hosted college students this year. There’s a kind of reverence among the turfwriting crowd for the days when the reporters knew every board in every barn on the backstretch as well as the trainers did, and reported the outcome of allowance races to a public who cared. I understand that, but I also understand that the days of the cigar-chomping, cocked Fedora reporter are
gone. We may write according to SEO instead of column inches, but I think the next generation of racing writers are no less capable than our forbearers of sweating out a deadline with a thesaurus in an effort to capture the poetry of a horse in motion. In a world more driven than ever by data and an insistence on transparency, I also believe we are just as brave in our efforts to dig in to uncomfortable stories and ask tough questions when they need to be asked. We may not be Joe Hirsch, but we haven’t forgotten about him. And, as long as readers like you keep flipping through magazines like this one in print or online, turfwriting will go on. I’m betting my future on it. Joe had to take this month off from his usual column (even a claimer gets a layoff every now and again). DIAR Sponsored Stakes at Lone Star Park a Great Success
Text and photos by Pamela Burton, www.horsereporter.com Dubai International Arabian Races (DIAR) is expanding its Arabian racing support around the world, and on November 13, 2015 DIAR sponsored four Arabian stakes while enjoying Texas hospitality at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas. This new series of races is being held in the US for the first time and Shadwell was the major sponsor on this occasion. DIAR and Shadwell share the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum. In these races, prize money was awarded to tenth place with 60% to the owner of the winner, 20% second, 10% third, 6% fourth, 4% fifth, and places 6 through 10 $750 each.
Easter Man started the evening by winning the DIAR Texas Lone Star Futurity for 3-year-old colts and geldings. He took home 60% of the $20,000 prize money in the 6 Furlong (1200m) contest. Easter Man (Burning Sand x Angel Proof, by NF Proof) with Ivan Arellano up, settled well on the inside then made his bid at the top of the stretch giving Uptown Dannys Boy a run in that could not be stopped. RB Madjyk Man finished third followed by Jess Is On Fire and RB Goliath. The winning time was a quick 1:18:15. Easter Man is trained by Jerenesto Torrez and owned by Betty and Joe Gillis. The fifth race on the card featured the $30,000 Dubai International Arabian Races Texas Open Arabian S. for 3-year-olds and up.

This was the first 2015 win for the five-year-old, which delighted owners Alan Kirshner and Deborah Mihaloff of Cre-Run Farm. Sand Victor finished second and RB Brilliant third. Chndakasexpress, Sand On Fire, Hesster, and Ayers completed the field. The winning time was 1:56:86. Thess Is Awesome is trained by Lynn Ashby and bred and owned by Cre Run Enterprises LLC. Delaware Park-based Jewell AA took the lead home to win the www. shadwellarabian.co.uk Texas Lone Star Futurity. The 6 furlong (1200m) race carried prize money of $20,000. racing across the world. This new initiative from the Dubai International Arabian Races aims to develop the sport in countries where it is its infancy as well as continuing to support events in areas such as the UK and France where it is better established. Texas was the last DIAR stop of the 2015 series. The 2016 DIAR race programme is still under review, but following the success of this initial visit, it is likely that the US will secure a place in the fixture list going forward.

Corum I had the good fortune to sit down and speak with both Mr. Mirza Al Sayegh, Chairman of Shadwell Estate Company Limited (UK), and Mr. Richard Lancaster, Stud Director for Shadwell. I asked them about their trip to Texas and the success (and future) of the DIAR sponsorships. Mr. Al Sayegh said of the races at Lone Star, "I’m very, very happy with the outcome, and the four winners that captured our races - they came out of strength and turn of foot." He appreciated the hospitality for which Texas is noted, and the knowledge of the horsemen and women at the event. "The mayor was very, very nice. I appreciate his presence and his support and we extended an invitation to him to come to Dubai. Really I was touched by the kindness, hospitality and sense of humor of the people. All of them know about the races. Yesterday’s gathering (at the race track) showed us that everyone we met has something to do with the horses and that makes our life easier."

I spoke to him yesterday and explained to him about the about the races and he said ‘okay, think about next year.’ We are coming next year. It’s a done deal." Mr. Al Sayegh went on to add, "These kinds of events help forge relationships not only between governments but between people. Between the UAE and the United States there are many, many areas of cooperation and friendly relationships and if we can do something to help please let us know.” That is good news indeed for Arabian racing in the United States.

Richard Lancaster, Stud Manager at Shadwell Estate Company Limited (UK), sees both the Arabian and thoroughbred sides of the racing industry. Combine that with his travels throughout the world and he is afforded a comprehensive perspective on Arabian racing with which few people can relate. It was my complete pleasure to talk Arabians (and I admit a little bit of thoroughbreds) with him during his visit to Texas. Mr. Lancaster echoed Mr. Al Saegh's comments when I asked him about the races and his time spent in Texas. "It’s been fantastic," he said referring to their trip. "It’s wonderful to come to a new place and to see the enthusiasm for the Arabian racing that we saw last night. We had good, competitive fields with some of the top horses of their generations from here in America. Bringing everyone together from East to West like we did last night was a good indication of the enthusiasm that is here." This was the first time Mr. Lancaster had been to Lone Star Race Park. “We walked out on the dirt, and the track was very good. We were very impressed with the facilities. Scott (Wells, General Manager at Lone Star) made us very welcome. It was also great to have the mayor of Grand Prairie there." Of course we talked about the future of Arabian racing and the DIAR sponsorships. "The whole concept has been driven by Sheikh Hamdan (HH Shiekh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai) and he is very keen that we’re out there trying to promote Arabian racing throughout the world. He loves Arabian horses, and he has a great love of the culture that the Arabians bring
from his part of the world. That is why we are trying to help wherever we can to create enthusiasm and to encourage breeders." Mr. Lancaster admits it’s an uphill struggle. "A lot of the older owners and breeders are falling to the side, and they aren’t being replaced. The market is a little bit distorted because you have some very wealthy individuals prepared to pay. If you are fortunate enough to have a horse with the breeding they want you are good." He also feels that Arabian racing is crying out for professionalism. "If it wants to be accepted as a sport it needs to be more professional. People can still enjoy themselves but we need integrity. I see both sides of it. The thoroughbred people still look at us and say 'What are these horses? What are they doing?'" He does feel that "enough has been seen to give very positive vibes about how things are going here (in the U.S.) and the willingness to work together to improve the Arabian scene for everyone." At the end, when I asked Mr. Lancaster if he had anything he'd like to add, he challenged the Arabian enthusiasts by saying: " We appreciate how hard people are working over here on our account. I think all our hearts over here are in the same place. I think a strong voice needs to be found to just try and get everyone to see where we’ve got to go. We’ve got to become more professional, and there has to be strong leadership from people with a depth of knowledge." This is certainly is no small feat, but something tells me that if anyone can do it, it's someone (or a group of someones) here in the U.S.

Racing and Training Conference Ladies and Apprentice Series Finals The Jewel Crown Text and photos by Debbie Burt www.equinecreativemedia.com. This year’s Racing and Training Conference brought together 600 racing professionals from around the globe to share their knowledge and ideas about the sport under the banner of the HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan Festival. After a welcome press conference at the Eastern Mangroves Hotel, the three days of discussions took place at the UAE National Archive Conference Hall, which was broadcast live to the world by YAS TV. The five sessions and two workshops covered Jockey Training and Safety, Jockeys as High Performance Athletes, Dieting and Weight Control, Media Training and also Breeding of Arabian racehorses. The importance of fitness in relation to accidents and the ability to recover from falls was discussed, as was the need to perceive jockeys as ‘Athletes’ on a par with other sporting disciplines. It was agreed that ambition and dedication were the vital ingredients for success at the highest level in the sport. The team from John Moores Liverpool University gave an overview of the results of their two years of study into weight control. Interestingly their studies showed female jockeys were, on the whole, more healthy than their male counterparts. They also stressed that whilst eating the correct foods was important, structured daily high intensity exercise was also necessary to maintain both weight and fitness. This was later revisited in the workshops led by Lara Sawaya and Derek Thompson. The Media panel concluded with an opportunity for some of the younger jockeys to experience interview technique as Derek Thompson questioned them live on TV. This was clearly a worthwhile experience for them. The final session on Breeding highlighted different country’s attitudes to embryo transfer and if it was recorded on
a horses’ passport. Meanwhile the majority of the 120 jockeys were invited to take part in three workshops with tutors from the racing schools present, focussing on technique and fitness (using a variety of racing simulators), plus a lecture on motivation. This proved a welcome addition to the conference programme and made excellent use of the assembled tutors. The racing was, of course, the highlight of the week, with the inaugural running of the €1.2 million Gr1 PA Jewel Crown supported by the Ladies and Apprentice World Championship Series Finals. A substantial crowd was assembled at the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club to witness the events which were also broadcast worldwide on YAS TV. The HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Apprentice Jockey World Championship (IFAHR) Final was held over 1 mile and 3 furlongs, with the starting gate positioned in the home straight which was all the more exciting for the crowds. The 12 Apprentice Jockeys who had been successful in the worldwide series represented Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, Ireland, Italy, Morocco, Puerto Rico, Russia and Turkey. Takaamul and Turkey’s Ismail Koyuncu were the first to show and remained prominent with Merzal for France’s Isis Magnin, Burj Khalifa for Belgium’s Zoe Vande Velde and Aakif with Andrea Fele from Italy. These four were clear entering the back straight. By the home turn only Merzal had held his position, and he had been joined by Hanoof and Ommar Lakjal of Morocco and Namrood under Russia’s Emil Kunakbaev. However, they swung wide leaving a gap up the rail. This was expertly exploited by Australian Ben Thompson who urged AK Adour, the lowest rated of the field, up the inner of Merzal to victory, ahead of Haanoof who took second, with those three clear of the remainder.

Molahen El Alhan and Sandee Martin was the clear leader in the early stages from Da’Areen and France’s Justine Mercer and RB So Rich and Omani Azhar Al Wardi. Tracking them were RB Smokin Rich and Moroccan Bouchra Marmoul in company with Delishess and Britain’s Ann Stokell. Molahen El Alhan extended his lead, but turning in to the home straight the gap had diminished to four lengths and the gelding looked vulnerable to challengers. Switzerland’s Astrid Wullschleger sent stablemate, Najm Alemarat to the front in the last 300m to score by a length and a quarter from the fast finishing Haizoom and Rebecca Smith of Great Britain. Molahen Al Alhan kept on a further length behind in third.

This was a fine ride by Thompson who had secured his place in the final when winning the first race of the series at the Kentucky Horse Park in May on Sam Vasquez’s Es Mi Cielo. That had been the young Apprentice’s first ride abroad and his first ever ride on an Arabian racehorse. Speaking after the final Thompson said, “The trainer warned me I would have to work quite hard and push the horse and it proved the case, but I was prepared. It is great to even be here on such an occasion. To win is just fantastic.”
This lead up to the feature event, the World’s Richest Arabian Horserace – the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown Gr1 PA. The international invitational contest had attracted some of the top names in Arabian racing worldwide and the 16 runner field had a further six reserves, so sought after was the prize. Heading the field on ratings was this year’s Dubai Kahayla Classic winner Manark for HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum. So Big Is Better was closest to him on ratings,

just ahead of Paddy’s Day and Thakif. Having won the Kahayla Classic from the front, Dane O’Neill employed similar tactics on Manark, blazing a trail ahead of So Big Is Better, Kalino and Thakif. Kalino soon joined him by halfway and the field was fairly strung out by the strong pace. Manark cried enough by the home bend, where there was drama for So Big Is Better when his saddle slipped and Travis Wales did well to keep the partnership intact to the line. Kalino however, was travelling sweetly for Olivier Peslier and was two lengths clear of Sahabba and Thakif with a furlong to go. The line could not come too soon for him though as Sahabba was gaining ground. A photo finish was called showing Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani ‘s Kalino had prevailed by the shortest of heads in what was a suitably thrilling finish. Trainer Alban de Mieulle commented, “In the Qatar Arabian World Cup at Longchamp, both times he was unplaced - so I think he doesn’t like the track, though we knew he had some ability. The drop back to a mile, and I think he prefers soft ground, which helped him win today. We have also added a shadow roll to the cheekpieces to make him concentrate in front and I said to Olivier ‘If you
can go, go, don’t wait for the other one’. Four American horses competed in the Jewel Crown (Gr1 PA) - Paddy's Day, RB Frynch Broad, RB Rich and So Big Is Better. As was stated in Debbie Burt's piece, So Big Is Better was in a prominent position for the race to the wire, but his saddle slipped (as seen in the photo above), which left him with no chance. Jockey Travis Wales did an excellent job to stay on and bring the nearly white stallion home safely. RB Frynch Broad and RB Rich both ran in the middle of the pack. This year's contender for Darley Horse of the Year, Paddy's Day, decided, as horses sometimes do, that he did not like the track and chose not to run. He finished last. It was very disappointing for everyone connected with Team Paddy's Day, but fortunately there was nothing physically wrong with the horse. He just picked a most inopportune time to have a bad day. Despite these disappointments, there was certainly a very bright spot for the Americans. The winner, Kalino, was bred, raised and sold in the United States. He is by Kaolino who stands at Mandolynn Hill Farm in Texas. Bred by Trackside Farm, Kalino was foaled in Florida and is out of the Virgule Al Maury daughter Virlaxy. As a yearling, Denise Gault of Race Street Management brokered the sale of the chestnut colt to French interests and the colt was exported. Royal Richess Takes Star-Studded Crystal Cup Allowance Race By Corliss Hazard

October 29, 2015 - Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie ~ Crystal & Co. sponsored the CRYSTAL CUP, boosting the allowance race purse to a $15,000 prize. The race attracted the Who's Who of Arabian mares, the field full of Grade 1 company. Royal Richess took home the prize of the Crystal Cup going wire to wire in this 1 1/8 mile challenge. She finished in a blazing 2:05 and change, with her stablemate OUR PRINCESS a close second. Third was DC WILLEYS SONG just a nose over MS DIXIE. Jockey Laura Carson rode the multi graded stakes-placed and now 5-time winning mare Royal Richess. Jockey Kirsten Swan, USA's Darley Champion Jockey of 2014 was aboard second place finisher, OUR PRINCESS, a multi graded stakes winner, Grade 1 winner and USA's Darley Champion 4 year old filly of 2014. Lynn Ashby, USA's Darley Champion Trainer of 2014, trained both first and second place finishers. Royal Richess, owned by Cre Run Enterprises and Ann Fostock, was bred by Alan Kirshner and Deb Mihaloff of Virginia. She is a 5-year-old bay mare by TH RICHIE, out of the Hall of Fame race mare, ROYAL ATHEENA. Second place OUR PRINCESS, owned by Cre Run Enterprises LLC and also bred by Alan Kirshner and Deb Mihaloff, is sired by Nivour De Cardonne and out of Monarchs Princess, by Monarch AH. DC WILLEYS SONG (by Doran SBFAR x Wibwilcca, by Wilkolak) ran third under jockey Travis Wales, who delayed his trip to Abu Dhabi long enough to ride in this race. She was bred by Claudia and Dan Spears, and is trained by Ken Danyluk. The grade 1, 7-time winning mare is owned by Jon and Krista Henningsgard. MS DIXIE was the heavy earner coming into the race. Her career now boasts lifetime earnings of $241,482. This 7-year-old mare has earned 18 wins and 3 Darley Awards. She raced in the name of Quarter Moon Ranch, trained by Scott Powell, and was ridden by Kelsi Purcell. Bred by Bill Waldron, MS DIXIE is sired by Burning Sand, and out of Dixie Darlene by Wiking.

Something is changing in Italy concerning races dedicated to the purebred Arabian. Two important announcements were welcomed during 2015. The first was that the Ministry of Agriculture allowed all the horses qualified under the rules of WAHO to race in Italy. The second came from Paris, early in October, when the IFAHR General Assembly unanimously accepted the application form submitted by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture. This means that Italy can now host international races beginning in 2016. It is a great opportunity for Italian breeders and owners in terms of business, and it already means that the doors are open to new sponsorships. One of the first consequences of these innovations was what happened in Milan on October 18, 2015. San Siro, the famous Italian racecourse, hosted a purebred Arabian race for the first time. It was a big event because the race was included in the race day of the Gran Premio del Jockey Club, a Group 1 for thoroughbreds. This Arabian race was sponsored by an important Saudi Arabian Stud: Al Khalediah Stables, which is represented in Milan by General Manager Sheikh Motlaq Bin Mishref. The Al Khalediah Cup was over 2,000 metres and open to 4-year-olds and upward. In a field of 14 runners, there were three foreign invaders: two from France and one from the Netherlands. Elisabeth Bernard saddled Lares de Pine, owned by Taleb Bin Dhaher Al Muhairi, and Ghandarfalkhalediah, owned by the sponsor itself. The “Lady Globtrotter” Karin Van Den Boss was represented by Ali-
baba del Sol, under the colors of Landgoed Waterland. The other 11 runners were Italian owned and bred horses led by the 7-year-olds Nasco, Fedayn and Monnalisa. The weather was rainy all the week before the race so the ground was heavy and the final 800 meters was a long trip for all the horses but Lares de Pine (a 10/1 shot), who flew over the turf to win easily by 3 1/2 lengths, defeating the clear favorite Ghandarfalkhalediah. Alibaba del Sol was third, one length behind and Fedayn fourth. Lares de Pine is a grey colt born in Italy in 2011 by Calin du Loup out of Komeira (by Ulumu), and Nicola Cecchetti is the breeder. Lares de Pine was ridden by the 2015 Italian leading jockey Luca Maniezzi who rode an Arabian horse for the first time in this race .. not so bad! Taleb Bin Dhaher Al Muhairi decided to keep his horse in training in Italy, moving him to the Stefano Meattini stable in Grosseto, Tuscany. Lares de Pine raced three weeks later in Pisa at the San Rossore Racecourse over a shorter distance (1.800 metres) with good ground under his feet. He won again even if the impression was that he likes a longer trip. Next year will be very important for Arabian horses in Italy because the Sheikh Mansoor Festival will organize the 2016 World Arabian Horse Racing Conference in Rome and, as usual, three important races will be run in Capannelle racecourse as the last act of the conference week.

Welcome to the Backside! I met Stephanie Corum a few months ago, and I was impressed that she was the publisher of Arabian Finish Line magazine and a horse person. After getting to know her, like everyone else, I wanted to put my two cents in with ideas for her magazine. Over drinks one night I told her about my favorite section in a boating magazine I subscribe to. It is called “Back at the Dock” and focuses on amusing stories about boating life. I opened my big mouth and said she should do something like that for Arabian Finish Line. Well the other night Stephanie called and asked if my article would be ready for the next edition of the magazine. I was fairly certain she had called the wrong person, so I asked what she was talking about. Stephanie said the article was my idea, and she was giving it to me to handle. Oh and it’s due next week. After cleaning up the milk I was drinking that subsequently came out my nose, I started thinking about what I should do. So, this section is “The Backside”, which (once you get to know me) you will find that the title is most appropriate. This will be an ever-evolving section of fun and entertaining stories about the family love of horses, human interest involving the horse life, etc., and all submitted by you the loving Arabian family of readers. I work in my real job about 50 plus hours a week and to be truthful I am a little lazy, ok a lot lazy. I beg everyone reading this to send me your funny stories; favorite moments of you or your family with horses and anything fun you think the Arabian family might enjoy reading about. Also please feel free to share photos of you and your horses and your kids or grandkids horse related art work. I will try to fit everyone’s submissions in at some point. ins like the Dubai International Arabian Texas Open Stakes that Thess Is Awesome recently enjoyed in Texas don’t just happen. When Cre Run decided to support the Texas Lone Star meet, it required our sending horses to Texas before the Delaware Park meet had ended. This is not an easy task for anyone’s stable and we thank Lynn and Mark Ashby and their fine staff for all of their hard work in making this happen. A special thanks goes to Kirsten Swan and Rose Amaro who stayed with the horses the entire time in Texas. We are proud that each of the 3 horses we sent to support this meet won a Stakes race while there. As we see our numbers shrink in the United States it is imperative that we all work together to help fill these races, no matter where they are. Stakes races are nice, but not all horses are Stakes quality and we have to remember this. It is important to support our foundation race meets with their overnight schedules because they are the backbone of our industry.
