We're heading into fall and the twilight of the 2015 racing season. I'm getting ready to leave for Abu Dhabi for the richest Arabian race in the world and then a quick trip to Texas for the DIAR Stakes, four stakes in one night at Lone Star Park. There haven't been this many Arabian races on one card since all six Arabian Cup Championship races went off at Los Alamitos. As you'll see in Joe Nevill's column, the inaugural Triple Jewel series could be considered a success. Mike Economopoulos talks about the HARC getting started. And then on the other hand, Delaware Park, for many years our signature track, despite boasting overnight purses the level of stakes races struggled throughout the season. Michigan supporters had to tolerate Hazel Park shutting down early. It's a tale of two situations. One the one hand, Arabian racing is flourishing, particularly on the international scale. Yet in this country it isn't so clear cut. There is one thing I, as owner/publisher/editor of this magazine can tell you. As long as there is an Arabian race in the United States; as long as there is at least one person breeding for an Arabian racehorse, Arabian Finish Line will continue to bring you the news and events of our sport. Those working on every issue each month are dedicated to continuing. The magazine and the brand are growing, so we will continue and hopefully help Arabian racing increase in the United States.
One major action by the Board was approval of recommendations from the RMTC’s scientific advisory committee to add four new medications to the current list of 26 Controlled Therapeutic Substances (CTS). The RMTC voted to add these four medications at the urging of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP). The medications are: • • • •
Ranitidine – an anti-ulcer medication; Cimetidine – an anti-ulcer medication; Cetirizine – an anti-histamine; and Guaifenesin – an expectorant.
The Kentucky Equine Drug Research Council, working in conjunction with the UC Davis Kenneth L. Maddy Equine Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, performed the research necessary to support inclusion of these medications on the CTS List. The RMTC will now present these four medications to the Association of Racing Commissioners International (RCI) and advocate for their inclusion in the RCI model rules.

News to Know continued Commenting on the status of the Program, RMTC Chairman Alex Waldrop said, “The RMTC staff is working cooperatively with multiple industry organizations to achieve full implementation of the National Uniform Medication Program. Eleven states have now adopted the Program in its entirety and almost every other major racing jurisdiction is now in the process of approving some or all of the Program. While there remains much work to be done, the RMTC Board is encouraged by the fact that a steadily increasing number of states are embracing these all-important reforms.” In other business, the RMTC Board granted Interim Accreditation status to the Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (TVMDL) at Texas A&M University, which provides testing for the Texas Racing Commission. To achieve this status – the seventh laboratory to do so – TVMDL was required to submit an extensive application, pass a rigorous site inspection and successfully complete one round of the External Quality Assurance Program. “I am extremely proud that the drug testing section of the TVMDL has been granted Interim Accreditation by the RMTC,” said Dr. Glenn Blodgett, president of the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA). “Texas lies in the heart of quarter horse racing, and the AQHA is very proud to add another RMTC-accredited lab. Along with the AQHA, I would like to personally congratulate the Texas lab for this accomplishment.” The RMTC also unveiled its new website at the meeting. The website is designed to make it easier to find information about the National Uniform Medication Program, including the research projects of the RMTC that support the Program, as well as current information regarding RMTC’s additional efforts to strengthen the health and safety of horses and the integrity of racing. The website is now available to the public at rmtcnet.com. The RMTC consists of 23 racing industry stakeholders and organizations that represent Thoroughbred, Standardbred, American Quarter Horse and Arabian racing. The organization works to develop and promote uniform rules, policies and testing standards at the national level; coordinate research and educational programs that seek to ensure the integrity of racing and the health and welfare of racehorses and participants; and protect the interests of the racing public. Over the next two columns I'll be writing about a sensitive subject. I hope to do so in a balanced manner and my intention is not to poke a hornet’s nest or to make people mad at me. In my research of this topic, I received a number of strong and diverse opinions from those associated with breeding and running Arabian Race Horses. In this first part, I will report the basic facts I have gathered about the Heritage Arabian Racing Club (HARC). In the second part I will add some commentary and historic reference about HARC and the somewhat related issue of Arabian breed purity. In the May 2015 issue of the Arabian Finish Line, I read with great interest a press release submitted by the Arabian Jockey Club (AJC) about the formation of the HARC. The AJC said it was excited to be part of HARC, a new worldwide racing association, and stood ready to assist HARC in any way possible. The AJC's introduction of HARC was followed by a press release issued by HARC itself, describing its purpose and goals. You may wish to go back to the May issue and read it for yourself, but I will summarize what I believe is the essence. In February of this year, Arabian Race Horse folks from eleven countries met in Abu Dhabi at the invitation of His Highness Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who I will refer to as Sheikh Sultan (unlike the local hunting guide in my story last month who renamed the Sheikh he was guiding "Big Chief"). Sheikh Sultan is the patron and inspiration of HARC. The purpose of the club was stated as a means to support and promote racing for those who wish to preserve the purebred Arabian of initial type and bloodlines and to ensure the long term future of Arab horse characteristics. A few of the other key points mentioned in that news release included (and I paraphrase): • The use of highly selective and at time controversial bloodlines has resulted in a significantly improved Arabian racehorse that bears little resemblance to the original purebred, either in looks or in racing style and speed. • HARC wishes to protect and preserve traditional
bloodlines, while giving the breeders of those horses an opportunity to participate in racing and in doing so broaden the base of Arabian racing world worldwide. • HARC is using the success of the Pyramid Society (a group which promotes straight Egyptian horses with a very strict set of lineage criteria) as a model, to offer support and incentives to breeders and race horse owners with HARC approved horses. I was intrigued by this news release and began my research. Although I sent out inquires to many individuals associated with racing, I received surprisingly few responses. The bulk of the information I initially gathered was from the HARC Facebook page, and that was in the form of an interview published in June with one of the members of the HARC steering committee, Ms. Deirdre Hyde. That interview was printed in German and it was only though Google Translator that I was able to read it. I will stipulate that some of the interview may not have been translated properly, that Ms. Hyde may not have been speaking strictly on behalf of the HARC organization (and expressing personal opinions, not official positions), and perhaps more importantly, like any new and evolving organization (especially with folks spread out over eleven countries) I perceive that they are still finding their footing and establishing the specifics of their message and means of operations. Essentially, Ms. Hyde expanded on the press release mentioned above. She explained that the economic incentives for breeding faster horses had become a big money activity due to the large flow of funds from the Middle East and that "commercial growers" (that's how Google translated it) were only interested in the most successful and verkaufstrachtigsten (independently translated as "most prone to sale") bloodlines, regardless of their type and purity. She stated that although purses and prize money are growing on an international scale, they are ending up in the pockets of fewer and fewer people. From a breeder’s perspective, small "all-Arab" owners that were once the backbone of the sport have been displaced. Her observations are ironically similar to the viewpoints expressed by the Democratic presidential candidates that I watched in the Democratic debate last night; that there is expanding income inequal-

ity where those at the very top of the economic spectrum are successful, but leave out the other 90%. I want to be clear that despite Ms. Hyde's references to purity, she recognizes WAHO's definition that "A pure-bred Arabian horse is one which appears in any pure-bred Arabian Stud Book or Register listed by WAHO as acceptable.” The goals of HARC are not to redefine "purebred Arabians", but to help create races, incentives and encouragement for those who breed and race the traditional type of Arabian horses. More than just creating marketing opportunities and competitive racing opportunities for HARC horses, the Club is concerned that the original type Arabian is in danger of disappearing. Part of their mission is to save the overall diversity of the breed and maintain a healthy gene pool. So what defines a HARC-eligible horse? According to the unanimous decision of the founding members, the definition of a HARC horse is any horse who is registered in a WAHO recognized studbook but does not contain the blood in any generation of six named stallions. They are: Amer, Baroud III, Burning Sand, Dragon, St. Laurent, and Tiwaiq. Going back to the original press release referenced above, the founding members found these horses to be significantly improved Arabian racehorses that bear little resemblance to the original purebred, either in looks or in racing style and speed. Although HARC members cite that some of these bloodlines are questionable, they also state that there is no concrete proof of their heritage. There is much more in the interview with Ms. Hyde, but I want to move on to more recent information about HARC and some of the mechanics of the program. There is no single implementation plan for all of the member counties involved. Some countries have HARC-only races scheduled, while others have different incentive and premium programs in place. Currently the funding for HARC races and the soon-to-be established web site is through the generous donations made by Sheikh Sultan. Here in the US, Evie Tubbs Sweeney is the newly named HARC Voting Member and coordinator. She told me that HARC has no connection with the AJC. And although the AJC is not involved in the administration or development of the program, they will be disseminating information about the program as part of their role of providing education and racing data for Arabian racing. Ms. Sweeney hopes the program will help grow racing here in America by encouraging existing Arabian race owners of HARC horses to not give up and leave the sport, while attracting new owners, particularly those who are already involved with Arabian show horses. She told me that the HARC added-money program does not, in any way, limit the opportunity of any bloodline
to race in America and is simply a breeders incentive program to keep the breeding pool diverse and growing, for the long-term sake of the sport's health and growth. The US Club was officially recognized by HARC on September 15 and will start disseminating funds in 2016. Working with state racing associations, HARC races will be held in five states: Delaware, Michigan, Colorado, Texas and California. There will be one race at each location with $4,000.00 in added money for each race. The payout will be as follows: • $1000 to the breeder AND owner of the first place HARC-eligible horse • $600 to the breeder AND owner of the second place HARC-eligible horse • $400 to the breeder AND owner of the third place HARC-eligible horse. According to this formula, the entire $4,000 will be paid out, and the money will go to the highest placed HARC horses, regardless of their finish behind non-HARC horses. So that's the facts as I know them. I am going to save most of my comments, and the comments I've received from others, for the next issue. Between now and then, I would be happy to hear from anyone who wants to respond to me directly and I'm sure the Finish Line would welcome any Letters to the Editor. If you have any interest, check out the HARC Facebook page and if you can read German, you might find Deirdra Hyde's interview informative. Interestingly, the vast majority of the 362 followers of HARC's Facebook page are not from the US and this may very well be of greater concern to other HARC member countries than to those here in the US. Perhaps what has happened here in the US (the huge decline in the backyard breeder and decline in ownership), has motivated others to take action in their homeland before it's too late. I recently read a post on Facebook by a prominent international agent that said, "Arabian racing has not changed much from years ago; the same pedigrees basically are winning and most American breeders need to be more competitive on the international racing level.Having said that, it's not easy to compete against the Middle East owners who bought most of the best mares in France, although the best stallions are now available for the American breeders." To give some perspective, when this person refers to racing not changing much from years ago, this was once a hot topic of discussion. I devoted two columns to it in January and February of 1993-over 22 years ago. "Closing the barn door after the horse has bolted" may be an ironically accurate idiom.

Trypanosoma evansi Infection in Horses: An Emerging Disease It affects all African countries, Arabian Peninsula, Pakistan, Iran, Afghanistan, India, China, Mongolia, Russia, Nepal, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines and Indonesia. Nowadays, it also is distributed in Western countries, Latin America, Central America to Mexico and Argentina to Panama Spain. To what am I referring? A pathogenic mammalian parasite that produces the disease known trypanosomiasis (pronounced tri-pan-e-se-mῙ-e-ses) - otherwise known as Mal das Caderas (Latin America) or surra (Asia, Africa and Europe) in horses. More specifically, Trypanosoma evansi (T. evansi) is a blood and tissue protozoan (single-celled organism that is able to propel itself through its environment) that is transmitted through the blood-sucking insects. The insect takes up the parasite and passes it on to the new host with its next blood meal. The parasite can then reproduce in the blood or extracellular fluids of the mammalian host. T. evansi is considered a very cunning parasite in that it is able to evade the host immune response by altering the antigenic composition of its surface protein; thus the host’s immune system does not mount an attack (toxic metabolites or lysis) against the parasite and it can cause immunosuppression of its host animal. The parasite mainly affects
members of camelidae (camel, llama, alpaca) which act as a carrier and reservoir of the parasite. Initially, the parasite developed in camels in North Africa; however due to the biting insects acting as mechanical vectors (carries the parasite from one host to another), animals housed with or next to the camels will become infected such as equidae (horse, donkey, ass, mule). T. evansi has a wide host range and covers a variety of domestic and wild animals including cattle, sheep, goats, dogs, pigs, elephants, deer, foxes, tigers and jackals. Wild animals such as large rodents and raccoons may act as reservoirs of T. evansi, in that they are considered healthy carriers of the parasite, thus they are able to transmit the parasite via blood-sucking insects. Horses are considered highly susceptible to the disease while mules, donkeys, and asses show a lower susceptibility. The classical clinical signs of trypanosomiasis in horses is characterized by anemia (low red blood cell count) mainly due to the destruction of the red blood cells, edema (fluid swelling) of the limbs and other areas (testicles, sheath, abdomen, udder), anorexia, dehydration, lethargy, fluctuating fever, loss of appetite and weight, incoordination, followed by paralysis of the hind limbs. Pregnant mares will abort their fetuses. There is variable intensity of these signs, from totally unapparent to

lethal. The signs are usually divided into three stages of the disease: subacute, acute, and chronic. In the chronic stage, horses usually exhibit chronic wasting associated with incoordination and limb paralysis; the horses in this chronic stage have been described as “living skeletons.” As the parasite travels to the brain, the horse will exhibit neurological signs due to inflammation and death of brain tissue. The incubation period is 1 to 4 weeks and sometimes up to 8 weeks, after which signs will appear. The disease can lead to death within 2 to 8 weeks unless treated with trypanocidal drugs. Trypanosomiasis caused by T. evansi can be clinically confused with other equine neurologic diseases, such as equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) in its chronic stages. Where T. evansi is suspected, it is important to rule out other causes of equine neurologic disease. Most available diagnostic methods include the parasitological, serological, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The parasitological test is fast. It involves taking a fresh blood sample, staining the blood smear and observing the T. evansi parasite. This method however lacks specificity and sensitivity if there are low numbers of the parasite in the bloodstream. Serology employs the use of a card agglutination test kit known as CATT/T. evansi. This has
been a method used for disease surveillance in several countries. This test detects trypanosome-specific antibodies in the blood, plasma, or serum of the animal. Polymerase chain reaction technology amplifies a few copies of a piece of DNA, thus generating thousands to millions of copies of a particular DNA sequence. PCR testing on blood samples is a specific and sensitive method; however, it is not 100% reliable if T. evansi is only present in the tissues. Because of T. evansi’s ability to elicit immunosuppressive effects on its host, the parasite can develop a rapid resistance to the trypanocidal drugs. This parasite also has the ability to modulate its own antigen (antigenic variation) thus undermining the ability of the animal to mount an immune response to the parasite and therefore a vaccine resulting in vaccination failure. In addition, this parasite has an apparent unlimited range of animals it can use as very efficient reservoirs, thus it can spread virtually undetected. Clearly this understated parasite is one we health professionals (animal and human) should be paying very close attention to as a quickly emerging disease.

We’ve got the first edition of the Triple Jewel series in the books, and by just about any account imaginable, the right horse won. Paddys Day was the only horse in the three-race series to hit the board in all three editions, never finishing worse than second. In fact, he was a neck’s length away from winning two of the three legs. If a Thoroughbred were to finish with the same record in a comparable series, they’d be setting the type for his or her Eclipse Award. Keeping a horse in the kind of condition to succeed in stakes competition at three different distances and three very different venues over the course of six months is a truly impressive accomplishment. Congratulations to trainer Scott Powell and jockey Kelsi Purcell on a fine campaign. Now, let’s take a look at the Triple Jewel series by the numbers and identify the positives and the areas that might benefit from some further examination. For those of you unfamiliar with the series, it covered three divisions of the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup run in the U.S.: The Amethyst at Sam Houston in March, the Emerald at Pleasanton in July, and the Diamond at Los Alamitos in September. A $150,000 bonus was on the line for the horse that competed in all three legs and earned the most points at the end, with the winner of each race
earning eight points, the runner-up seven points, third place six points, and all others five points. Eighteen individual horses competed in the Triple Jewel’s three races, accounting for 30 total entries. Only four competed in all three legs, making them eligible for the bonus. Below were their final scores, followed by their placings in each race. 1. Paddys Day – 22 points (2-1-2) 2. So Big Is Better – 18 points (11-5-1) 3. Sand Victor – 17 points (7-2-4) 4. Es Mi Cielo – 15 points (8-4-7) Three additional runners competed in two of the three legs, while Burning Fleet, winner of the Amethyst, has not raced since that effort. So, what did I like? - The best horse won. There is no debating that Paddys Day was the most successful and consistent runner in the series, and that’s what a highpoint challenge is all about. Even better, he won a race. He didn’t have to win one to take home the grand prize, but it certainly adds a level of legitimacy to the event that the winner was, in fact, a winner. There will eventually be a Triple Jewel winner who takes the pot without winning a race if the series is around long enough, and it will be kind of a downer, but for now, everything shook out as it should. - Participation was high. averaged 10-horse fields, and the smallest one had nine in the gate. Five of the 11 that ran in the first leg came back for the second leg, and everyone else was out of contention for the bonus from there on out, so it’s hard to tell how much of an influence it had in that department, or if the draw of three separate graded stakes with nice purses was enough to fill the entry box. Either way, it’s better than seeing four-horse fields slug it out in its first year of existence. - So Big Is Better won a race. This doesn’t have much to do with the series itself, but you’ve gotta love the old man and how far he came in six months, from the worst defeat of his career in the Amethyst to winning the Diamond. And what are some things that might be considered for future editions? - Perhaps a runner-up award. As mentioned earlier, only four horses were still eligible for the bonus at the end of the challenge. I realize a lot can happen to a group of horses from March to September, and we’re not starting with a base of 20 horses like the Kentucky Derby. In fact, four horses accounts for 36 percent of the initial 11-horse field at Sam Houston. Perhaps a small award for running in all three legs of the event and finishing second or third by points would help the attrition rate a bit, though. A series like this is built on recurring characters and rematches. If horse-
men are further incentivized to come back, they just might. - Adjust the points system for horses that finish off the board. This year’s outcome was pretty justifiable top-tobottom, but having the fourth-place finisher earn as many points as the last-place finisher seems like it could come into play somewhere down the road. I wouldn’t seek drastic changes here, because I like giving participation points as an incentive to run in each race and still be competitive toward the end prize. One solid effort and you’re in the hunt, just like the runners-up were this year. Making a small change though, like awarding five points to finishers 4-6 and four points to all other finishers, might add a little more urgency to the proceedings without completely dooming a horse for one bad run. If the money somehow came about for runner-up payouts, this would be especially pertinent. - I don’t know how to fix this, but my worries about the series’ western leanings and their effect on the demographic were largely manifested. The vast majority of the runners in the series’ final two legs were California-based, and the Delaware Park contingent didn’t get much representation (everyone’s in the same place at Sam Houston before splitting off for the summer, so I don’t count the first leg in that observation).
The field sizes were great in the Triple Jewel races, and I’ve read plenty about how Delaware Park horses need to stick around to support their program, so maybe this is only a problem in my own head. They have the best purse structure in the country and shipping cross-country up to three times would be expensive and taxing, so they don’t have to go anywhere if they don’t need to. I get that. The same goes for folks west of the Mississippi. I don’t think arbitrarily putting a leg of the series at Delaware Park would magically solve the issue. It would only get harder to win, and shipping costs could make it prohibitive for some. We’d be left with three disjointed races filled with locals and maybe a few crossover horses with the money and resources to make a go of it. That’s no fun. However, if this event is going to take off and be a cornerstone series for the racing Arabian breed, it needs the participation of its best horses. Some of those horses are in California, some of those horses are in Delaware or elsewhere. This will require some effort to find the right balance, but the long-term payoff could be worth it. Just for fun, below are the full standings for the inaugural Triple Jewel series, including the horses that were disqualified from the final prize for not running in all three races. The four that were eligible for the bonus are in bold.

www.equinecreativemedia.com Four enticing days in Paris begin with one of the few Arabian racehorse sales in the world. Two juvenile events follow, then a four-year-old fillies’ contest, which only serves to whet the appetite for the main course – the World Cup, a feast of Group 1 Purebred Arabian action, all run over 2000m (a mile and a quarter). Saint-Cloud, recently spared from the threat of development, was as beautiful as always, and the first of the Group 1’s, the Qatar Total Arabian Trophy des Poulains confirmed that HH Sheikh Hamdan had found a new star in Muraaqib (FR). A striking son of Munjiz (FR), out of the homebred Tashreefat (GB), he had impressed when winning at Deauville in August on his first attempt at this trip, showing a clean pair of heels to his rivals which included Mabrooka (FR), who had beaten him over a mile at Chantilly in June. Settled in mid-division, regular pilot Francois Xavier Bertras made his move at the 500m mark and Murraqib appeared to be travelling well within himself. However he was not handed an easy victory as in Deauville. Coming wide down the centre of the track was RB Burn (US), and the two colts accelerated clear of their rivals with 200m to go. Muraaqib had to show his mettle and RB Burn went down by a neck, with Alsaker (FR) six lengths back in third. This form was later confirmed in the Qatar Total Arabian Trophy des Pouliches, when Mabrooka, also coming from off the pace, scored by a length and three quarters. HH Sheikh Mansoor’s Mahabb (FR) filly showed a considerable turn of foot to make up many lengths in the home straight and won going away from Worood (FR). Naziq (FR) in the same ownership and by the same sire, filled the third spot, also six lengths behind the second.
The next day at Longchamp, having been third (with Alsaker) and second (with Worood), the Royal Cavalry of Oman finally clinched Group 1 success that weekend with Sylvine Al Maury (FR), who also provided a further triumph for her sire Munjiz in the Qatar Total Arabian Trophy des Juments. A runner-up in the fillies’ contest at Saint-Cloud last year for her owner-breeder Rene Koch, she has progressed in the Cavalry’s distinctive colours with a half length second to Mister Ginoux (FR) in the French Derby Group 1 PA and two subsequent Group 3 PA wins at La Teste over the summer. Jean-Bernard Eqyeum had her tracking her pace-setting stablemate Bellone Du Croate (FR). They took it up with 400m to run for a smooth two and a half length victory over Gidwa (GB). A daughter of Amer, she filled the same spot as her half sister Djainka Des Forges (FR) did in 2013. A length back in third was Bint Jakkarta (QA), in company with another Munjiz filly Yathrib, they were a good ten lengths clear of the remainder. As befits a prize fund of €1 million Euros, not only was there a full field of 20 runners for Sunday's Qatar Arabian World Cup, but they were of the highest order. Last year’s winner Djainka Des Forges was bidding to emulate the fabulous French Thoroughbred Arc winner Treve – with back to back wins - however with drying ground at Longchamp all week, underfoot conditions were not in her favour. For the same stable was Gazwan (GB), an impressive four year old winner of the Shadwell Dubai International, his trainer Julian Smart felt that though he was entitled to line up, this would probably not be his year. Sir Bani Yas (FR) also had plenty at stake, he had won the

first leg of the newly established Doha Triple Crown at Goodwood and if successful here and then in the HH Emir’s Sword in Qatar next February, he would be in line for the $1 million dollar bonus. Al Mourtajez (FR) had put in a disappointing effort when a never nearer fifth in the Prix Dragon (World Cup trial) over course and distance the previous month. However as a winner of four Group 1’s and three Group 3 contests, he was still a force to be reckoned with. Also for Thomas Fourcy and Al Shaqab was Al Mouwaffak (FR). He had struggled since winning the Group 2 Sheikh Zayed Cup (Prix Carthage) in April, but came back to something like his best when runner up to Al Mourtajez at Deauville in August. Of the other fillies, Prada T (NL) had impressed when winning the Group 1 Coupe de Europe over course and distance in May and had been runner-up to Sir Bani Yas at Goodwood. Samima (FR) had won the Prix Dragon trial ahead of a number of these including Loraa (FR), who had won the four year old fillies Trophy here last October, a Group 2 in June and had also been runner-up to Djainka Des Forges at Newbury. In a matter of strides Julien Auge and Al Mourtajez stamped their authority on the eighth running of this contest; sent to the front from the off, they were never headed. The son of Dahess showed all his customary verve that had been lacking in the Prix Dragon and was not found wanting when Auge asked him to quicken turning into the home straight. It was all over with 400m remaining. At 300m it looked like a repeat of the HH Emir’s Sword victory as Djainka Des Forges stayed on; however, she would have to concede the number two spot to Gazwan, who was closing on the outside. She then lost third to Sir Bani Yas, but it was a game effort on unsuitable ground for the filly. Al Mourtajez’s electrifying performance secured a fivelength win in the fastest time in the race’s history. His jockey Julien Auge confirmed, "He has an unusual acceleration for a Purebred Arabian. Last time, he was a shadow of himself...He did not go forward. Sometimes, it happens..." Trainer Thomas Fourcy was relieved. “The last time I did not understand. Maybe I did not give the right orders, I do not know, I did not have a valid explanation. Today, he really proved himself. I knew my horse was good, I trembled all week. I am young and I still have things to learn ... He is exceptional and I won my Arc!"
Arqana Purebred Arabian Sale Saint-Cloud Arqana’s sale was heralded as an outstanding renewal, with the top lot Mont D’Or (FR) (by Mahaab) selling for €210,000 ($238,528). From the Haras De Mandore, he is a full brother to this year’s Dubai Kahayla Classic winner Manark (FR) and was knocked down to Jean-Pierre Deroubaix’s FBA agency. However it was Munjiz’s produce that dominated the two-year old section, with Ehwaz (FR) from Haras de Mandore, fetching €170,000. Khalifa Bin Hamad Al Attiyah outbid Alban de Mieulle, saying that the colt will go into training with Thomas Fourcy. Nicolas de Watrigant of Mandore International Agency secured July Du Falgas (FR) from Haras de Thouars for €150,000. She was a half-sister to Kandar Du Falgas (FR), the winner of three Group 1PA races. Melk (FR), a colt out of Florihala (FR), herself a full sister to the Gr.1 P.A. scorer Dorfa (FR) and another from the Haras de Mandore draft, went for €150,000 to Gérard Larrieu’s Chantilly Bloodstock Agency. Consigned by Ecurie Yann Creff on behalf of Robert Litt, Suleyman, a colt out of the Gr.1 P.A. performer Salma Thabeth, reached a final bid of €125,000 to trainer SandrineValérie Tarrou. The sale recorded a turnover of €2,457,000 ($2,790,783) the second-highest ever figure for this event, which showed a rise of 27% on last year’s figures. The average price was €35,100 ($39,868) showing an increase of 16%, whilst the clearance rate was in excess of 82%. Nine lots sold in excess of €70,000 ($79,509) against four in 2014. Eric Hoyeau, President of ARQANA, commented on the day: “The Pure-bred Arabian Sale is the only session dedicated to this category of horses and now firmly established in the horsemen’s agenda. It really takes the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe underway, which thanks to the support of QREC features the best competitions in the world for Pure-bred Arabians. We are delighted to contribute to this momentum and thrilled to have seen such a vibrant market, both for young stock and horses in training. As for the endurance section, which was only initiated last year, it has already found its audience.”

The Pride of Poland Summer Sale By Login Blachut The 2015 Pride of Poland Auction, selling Polish elite horses, took place on Sunday August 16. The following day, the Summer Sale took place, where one could buy highclass horses with interesting pedigrees at not-so-exorbitant prices as traditionally sold on the Sunday. For the last 45 years, Janow Sales have been the measuring stick for Arabian horse prices around the world. Year after year, Poland, thanks to a broad base of historically outstanding mares, presents to aficionados from the world over Arab horses of excellence. Top star sellers make up a large portion of a given year’s sales. Janow Auction started in 1970. The first auction to pass the $1 million mark was in 1977, coinciding with the celebration of the 160th year anniversary of the Janow Podlaski Stud. The star sale of that year was grey Carawella, sold to the US for $153,000. This year, with fair weather presiding over the four days, visitors swarmed to see the events. For the first time ever, there were customers from China and, more importantly, there was a record number of buyers. During the National Show, tables in the VIP sector were crammed so closely together it was difficult to circulate! The 2015 catalogue featured 28 lots for the Pride of Poland Sale and 31 lots for the Summer Sale. Both auctions presented mares that had not only excelled at National and International Halter Championships but had mostly successfully competed on the racetrack and had good breeding careers. and Michalow, belonging to the State Agricultural Property Agency, bred the majority of the 59 lots. Our private breeders presented only 12 mares. Numbers speak for themselves: both auctions proved to be a resounding success. Not only due to the thundering music, but also due to the excitement and clapping of onlookers and fervent bidding and exchange of comments among the Arabian horse fraternity from all corners of the world that were buying Polish mares like hotcakes. Only 4 lots did not reach their reserve prices and left the ring unsold: But they too found buyers in the following days. As to the total sales turnover for 2015, it was but € 5 thousand short of the € 4 million mark. The Summer Sale brought € 603,000, so all in all the sales made € 4,598 500. In comparison, last year’s sales amounted to € 2.7 million. Generally speaking, the price levels of this year’s auctions were very high and the top sellers set exorbitant records that probably will not be matched for some years to come. The number 1 Lot, Pepita (Ekstern x Pepesza/Eukaliptus), a 9-year-old flea-bitten beauty, bred and owned by Janow Stud, opened the auction. She had a decent race career of 7 starts (1 win and 6 placed), a successful breeding career (mother of 5) and an extraordinary show record (Polish National Champion and Best in Show, European Silver Champion, All Nations Cup Silver Champion and World Top Ten of 2014). After ardent bidding between stud farms from Saudi Arabia and Qatar, a buyer from Switzerland paid € 1.4 million and took the champion home in foal to Pogrom. It is the highest price ever achieved for an Arabian horse. The previous one was set in 2008 by World Champion mare Kwestura purchased for €1.125 million by Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi from Ajman Stud. The second best price, € 625,000, was achieved by Michalow Stud bred and owned 11 year old, grey Pistoria (Gazal Al Shaqab x Palmira/Monogramm). The All-Arabian International Horse Racing Day, held once a year for a number of decades, was staged this season on August 24. A nice sunny Sunday afternoon with a light breeze and a fast track attracted large crowds of spectators, punters and international aficionados of Arabian racehorse flesh. They all wanted to admire the 78 contenders taking part in 10 races, 4 of which were stakes with some of the highest purses in our racing calendar. The top attraction of the day was international race number 8, namely, the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan – Europe Cup Gr3 PA. Since 2010 it has been part of the Global Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Flat Racing Festival and the third leg of the Triple Crown along with races held at Duindigt, Holland and in Berlin, Germany. The horse with the highest number of points from the three races, apart from the purse, obtains a bonus of € 30 000 for its owner. The race is for 4-year-olds and up Pure Arabians entered in the WAHO Stud Books at a distance of 2600m. For the Europe Cup there were 9 contenders that went to the starting gate. A fast pace from the start was dictated by the 4 year-old Etorio (Ontario HF x Elegantka z Izby/Mocny) who pulled slowly ahead from the group. Second came Szakur (Akbars x Sulima z Regula/Etar), closely followed by Ameretto. On the bend home Etorio ran out of gas and Ameretto boldly took the lead to slowly pull ahead on the last straight. year-old French-bred Ussam de Carrere (Njewman x Assada El Baraka/Mad Oua) that tried to catch the leader, but in vain. Third came Alladyn that managed to dominate Westin and Szakur. Ameretto’s victory by 6 lengths in this race was not a surprise though the time of 3.00.2 was far from its track record. This outstanding racer is by world-renowned race champion sire Amer and out of Win Taouy by Drug. She is the dam of such racers as Djet Taouy (by Dahess), Nekhen Taouy (by Djebbel) and Ramiz Al Aziz (by Akbar). Dr. Daverio and Mannuela Daverio-Sharferberg were delighted with their home-bred performer from their Haras de Bellevue in Grilly, France. Amerreto is in training in Germany with G. Richter. It was his fifth start and fifth win on the Sluzewiec racetrack, always wonderfully led to victory by his Italian jockey M. Manueddo. He is the only racer that won this Europe Cup Gr 3 PA stake four times in a row (2012-2015). He, too, is the only horse that won the Triple Crown for the third consecutive year. Ameretto will start his stud duties as of the 2016 season. Also much awaited was the international AL Khalediah Poland Cup Gr1 for four year olds and up at a distance of a mile. It is the second consecutive year that Saudi Arabian AKF Polska has sponsored this race. This year there was only a small field of 5 racers that went to the post. Muzahim went for the lead setting a brisk pace and slowly pulled away from his contenders. At the top of the straight home he dominated the field by several lengths. It was then that from the rear the four-year-old, grey Mufis started his finish. He gamely fought off Wasliew and Aziz and quickly approached the now slowing Muzahim. But under the expert hand of A. Karadanov the latter managed a one-length victory in 1:49. Five-year-old Muzahim (Nougatin x Malmazja/Wermut) that won post to post was bred by A. Mroczek and is owned and trained by J. Glowacki at the Mala Wies training centre near Warsaw. Mufid (Akbars x Mukata Fata/K A Czubuthan) placed second in this year’s Derby and showed class in this race when pitted against older horses, coming only 2 lengths behind the winner to the joy of his breeder and owner J. Ryszkowski. Mufid is trained by K. Zieminaski. Third was Wasilew, 2¾ lengths behind. He is a seven-year-

lead setting a crisp pace. He unfortunately ran out of steam on the bend home and was easily overtaken by three racers that started their finish, Mogadiusz, V.I.P. Kossack and PourVous Kossack that fought tooth and nail. But the race was won with ease by lightly galloping Tefkir who took the lead in the last furlong of the straight. Time of the race 2:19.1. Tefkir was led to victory by T. Lukasek and is trained by M. Lojek for the owner Z. Gorski. Tefkir (Njewman x Djeurelle/ Karbella) was bred in France by E.A.R.L. de Beguerie. Second, 3¼ lengths behind came V.I.P. Kossack (Marwan x Vydumka/Madiar) followed by one length by chestnut filly PourVous Kossack (Marwan x Pengali Kossack/Bengali d’Albert). Both horses were bred in Holland at the Kossack Stud. PourVous Kossack was recently transferred to race in France.

The betting public showed quite an interest in the Sabellina S. Gr2 at a distance of 2000m for 4-year-old and older mares. This race is treated as one of the last tests before the Oaks that takes place in September. Nine participants went to the gate. As expected it was the betting-publicfavoured grey Farha that went to the front setting a slow pace. Suddenly she improved and pulled away by a number of lengths. This strategy paid off and allowed her to win by a length over her key competitors. Gran and Wameria were too late in realizing their mistake. From behind, the Michalow-bred and -owned Emossa passed Wameria and came in second. Gran came in fourth. Four -year-old victorious Farha was bred by M. Stelmaszczak and is co-owned by her breeder and her trainer M. Wnorowski. Second by ¾ of a length, four year old Emossa is a DA Adios daughter out of Emissa by Ganges in training with E. Zahariev with W. Szymczuk in the irons. The big surprise was the arrival in third place, 6½ lengths behind, of Amer’s daughter Wameria, who many expected would squash all competition. Time of the race was 2:22. The most important international race for three year olds, with a distance of only 2000m, is the Bialka S. Gr1. This year, four strong racers were entered by top Polish trainer, A. Walicki (Poprow, Mogadiusz, PorVous Kossack, V.I.P. Kossack). The two last belong to Mr. K. Gozdzialski who after an absence of 8 years reinvested into racing buying young horses in Holland and France. The most popular among the betting crowd were V.I.P. Kossack, winner of both his starts, and the only filly, PourVous Kossack, that recently won a 1600m race in the record time, for a 3 year old, of 1:49.4. Many, too, bet on the bay colt Tefkir that showed great potential with two wins in two starts. At the start of the race it was the bay colt Poryw that took the
Another very interesting race was the HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Apprentice World Championship IFAHR. It is a great international incentive for young riders. In this case the ten riders came from four continents and 10 different countries. It was the rider from Canada, Brandon Duchaine, who easily won the mile long race in the time of 1:50.2 by 5 lengths on the seven year old stallion Kasir Al Khaleidiah. Second, was a lady rider from Great Britain, S. Killoran, on 6-year-old Siergo, a son of Gorec, beating M. Thackeray on Fuksus by a neck. It is fascinating to observe the major improvements and positive changes that the Middle East sponsors have made at all levels in Arabian horse racing. They have sure made a difference in Poland, which was evident during the All Arabian International Racing Day in Warsaw. The whole racing crowd is in debt to HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed, HH Sheikha Fatima Bint Mubarak and Al Khaleldiah Poland for supporting such world-class races and events. Meanwhile, PADDYS DAY demolished the field in the Probat Ferrara PASB colt & gelding division, winning the one-mile race by Fatime an astonishing 18 lengths. Final time was 1:48.62 with fractions of :27.04, :53.24 and 1:20.46 on a fast main track. Raced by Quarter Moon Ranch LLC and trained by Scott Powell, the four-year-old colt by BURNING SAND was four wide on the first turn, contested the pace on the outside, then shook clear near the quarter pole, was put to the whip turning for home to draw off widening the gap. Breaking from the outside and coming in slightly out the gate, Paddys Day traversed an overland route fivewide past the judges in the opening furlong before steadily sweeping over into the lead around the club*Mirzaz house turn. October 9, 2015 - Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie ~ Uptown Dannys Boy took charge in the stretch run and was much the best in the Wathba Stud Farm Cup allowance race for 3-year-olds and upward. The seven furlong challenge paying a purse of $12,000 is part of a purebred Arabian racing series under the umbrella of the Sheikh Mansoor Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival. Uptown Dannys Boy broke first from the start, then settled in third position stalking the pace set by My Vaz Is Hot. Going four wide in the turn, Uptown Dannys Boy gained the advantage and went clear by 2 1/2 lengths by the finish. My Vaz Is Hot was a convincing second, followed by Chndakasexpress, Hesster, and Dartyn Kriss SWA. Three horses were scratched from the race; Es Mi Cielo (Stewards), Ibn Moulin Rouge (Veterinarian) and Kafo (Veterinarian.) Finishing time for the 7 furlongs was 1.36.79. By Golly Its Hot finished fourth 9 1/4 lengths ahead of True Grit SA in fifth. The top five finishers in the race were all sired by Burning Sand. Twice Rich, prominent in the early stages, folded and finished a distant last. Djets Son bolted and ran into the outer rail near the backstretch chute and did not finish.
