If you were asked to name the most influential stallion in U.S. Arabian racing who would you say? Burning Sand? Wiking? A strong case could be made for either of those. But my vote goes to Kontiki. Yes, Kontiki. Why? Because he sired only 23 purebred foals before his early demise and yet they have had such an impact on Arabian racing that his name still shows prominently in the pedigrees of racehorses today - more than 40 years after his death. To remind us of his legacy, new Finish Line writer Tobi Lopez Taylor refreshes our memory on this great stallion. Sadly, Arabian racing lost two more of its staunchest supporters. Just months after being inducted into the AJC's Tent of Honor, Jerry Partin passed away. And not long afterwards, Worth Wollpert, who owned Wydmas Splash with his wife Sandy and was a constant presence at Delaware Park, also passed. I would like to offer my personal condolences to the family and friends of both of these gentlemen. They will be missed. Arabian Finish Line was well represented at ADIHEX in Abu Dhabi for the first time. Corliss Hazard held down the fort for me when I was unable to attend at the last minute. Thank you Corliss! Magazines are also in every Markel goodie bag at Sport Horse Nationals going on in North Carolina as I write this. We strive to have the magazine continues to expand its market and reach. Hi, my name is Katherine Clark and I am a graduate of University of Kentucky. I studied Equine Science and Management and minored in Agricultural Economics while in col-

lege. I have been around horses since I was seven years old, went to 4-H horse camp for eight years, have owned five horses in my life and currently own three. During college, I took an internship with The Kentucky Horse Council training animal control officers how to rehabilitate abused and hurt horses and livestock. I then took on an internship with Hagyard Equine Medical Institute as a veterinary technician's assistant. After that internship ended, I was hired on as the McGee Medicine's weekend receptionist where I worked for a year. Then, only a short few months later started working at Hagyard Pharmacy where I worked for a year and a half. I have also worked the Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton sales for Mulholland Farm, Paramount Sales, and Spendthrift Farm. I moved back to Northern Kentucky in May 2015 and currently work for Arabian Finish Line. This is my first time working outside of the Thoroughbred industry and starting something new in the Arabian industry, but I am beyond excited to learn more about it and get further involved in it. Hi, I'm Vanessa Moreau-Sipiere, and I was born with love for Arabians running through my veins. Being the daughter of Eric and Randi Moreau-Sipiere meant I was around Arabians even before the day I was born. I graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with my Bachelor’s Degree. I majored in Visual Communication (aka Graphic Design) with a French Minor. I have also been a professional photographer throughout the DFW metroplex for the past 8 years. I have photographed over 200 weddings, but I have been known to have my camera with me whenever I go to the races or anywhere our horses happen to be. I am very active with helping around my parents’ farm whether it involves foaling out a mare or delivering a horse to their new home halfway around the world. I am very excited to become a part of Finish Line magazine. I grew up looking through it every month and I look forward to the progress that is to come!

Arabian Racing Will Miss...

in to the Arabian Jockey Club Racing Tent of Honor in May of this year for his extraordinary and significant contributions to the Arabian breed. He is survived by a daughter, Debi Russell of Weston; a son, Dale Partin of Vancouver, Wash.; two sisters, Donna Key of Athena, and Lavern Grigsby of Ceres, Calif.; a brother, Charles Partin of Modesto, Calif.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-greatgrandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jerry was preceded in death by a son, Randy Partin.

Jerry E. Partin of Walla Walla passed away at age 88 on Sept. 2, 2015 at Park Manor Rehabilitation Center with his family at his side. Inurnment will be in the MiltonFreewater Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Auction Horses Rescue, 18034 Ventura Blvd. No. 291, Encino, CA 91316, or through the funeral home. Jerry was born March 27, 1927, in Antlers, OK, the son of Lowell and Ruby Wilmon Partin. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He moved to MiltonFreewater in 1969. Jerry started Cascade Drywall with his best friend, Wayne Norton. He retired from drywall and started doing what he loved best, working with racing horses, but he always had his tools ready to help someone when they were in need. Jerry trained Arabian race horses and rode endurance races for more than 40 years and was very successful in both, wining major stakes races and finishing in the top five in the nation, twice in endurance riding. Mr. Partin started racing Arabians in 1984 and retired in 2011 at the age of 84. He began his racing career with the help of Lynn and Mark Ashby and Chuck Lindsey, a longtime horse trainer from Walla Walla. Over the years, Jerry won many races as an owner/trainer. He left behind a giant community that will miss him dearly. One of the longest time participants and most influential people in Arabian racing, Jerry was inducted

Born in Cleveland, OH and raised in Chardon, OH, he resided for the past 17 years at Fox Hill Farms in Glen Mills. Worth was the founder and CEO of Diamond Tech Inc. for 40 years retiring in 2006. He was an active member of Del Vets where he served on the scholarship committee, also serving on the board of directors for Geauga Savings Bank in Cleveland, OH. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, owning his own race horses and golfing where he was a former member of the Concord Country Club. He graduated from Chardon High School and Cornell University where he received his BA degree. A fighter pilot and instructor, Worth served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War and later the National Guard in Mansfield OH. He is preceded in death by his parents, Worth G. and Phyliss Beeman Wollpert, 1st wife, Ann Wollpert and son, Worth Colin Wollpert. Beloved husband and father, Worth is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sandra Cox Wollpert, 3 children, Kimberlee (Jim) Beam, Worth Douglas (Dana) Wollpert and Shaunna L. Wollpert, 2 sisters, Kay Leggett and Ethel Richards, and 4 much loved grandchildren. Funeral Services and Interment will be private at a later date.

It was sometime in the mid 90's, a good period for U.S. Arabian racing, and many owners were selling horses to the Middle East (at decent and sometimes indecent prices). Much like today, in order to sell to a foreign buyer your horse had to be very, very fast or you had to have an influential contact. If you were lucky enough to be in tight with a connected trainer or bloodstock agent, your chances of making a sale were greatly enhanced. I had some good horses (not very, very fast), and although I was friendly with many trainers and agents, I was not in tight enough to get a whole lot of attention. Living on a dirt road on the top of a mountain in rural Arkansas didn't generate the same foot traffic as a fancy Ocala or California farm. We didn't have a majestic stone gate entrance, although we had plenty of rocks (arranged free-form). Like any other breeder, I was always promoting and looking to make a sale. I was at Los Alamitos for a big race and was pitching my prospects to an agent. "Where is Arkansas?" they asked. "Well, it just past Texas" I replied. "It's a beautiful place with mountains, rivers and forests." "Forests?" they quizzed. "Do you have wild animals, do they hunt there?" "Sure do" I answered. The agent then went on to tell me that one of their very important clients was a big hunter and if I had any wild game he could shoot, they might consider stopping by to check out our horses. "Yeah, we have all kind of wild critters" I told them (not explaining that they were mainly possums, raccoons and squirrels).

A while later I was back in Arkansas and I got a call from a foreign embassy official wishing to make arrangements for Sheikh (with a very long name) to come to Arkansas to hunt and look at horses. "Where is Arkansas?" he asked. "We will require several rooms at a five star hotel, with a suite for the Sheikh. He is currently staying in the penthouse at the Beverly. We will also want you to arrange for three limousines." "Three?" I asked. "Yes," they replied. "One for the Sheikh and his personal attendant, one for his chef, agent and staff, and one for his luggage." This was going to be a challenge. There wasn't a five star hotel in all of Arkansas, much less a decent motel anywhere within sixty miles. A limousine would not make it down my road without losing an oil pan. Without hesitation I assured them I could take care of those matters and would get back with them with details. I called the agent and explained the situation. We decided that we needed to characterize this trip as an "adventure". The Sheikh had recently been bear hunting in the remote Kodiak Islands of Alaska. We would try to provide a similar experience (minus the helicopter, grizzlies and glacier ice). I ended up arranging for three four wheel drive SUVs and rented several rustic cabins along the Buffalo River. We really didn't have any "guides" in the area, but I talked one of my local friends (who I will affectionately describe as a "hillbilly") to take this important Sheikh deer hunting. We would hunt on the first day and look at horses the next morning. The group would fly into Little Rock and make a two hour trip to Marshall. I would meet them at eight PM at the Piggly Wiggly parking lot and then take them to the cabins. This was before cell phones (at least here in Arkansas) and about nine o'clock I began to get worried. Finally, a few nervous hours later, the three SUVs pulled into town. "Was the flight delayed?" I asked the agent. "No," they replied pointing to one of the SUVs, "the Sheikh saw a WalMart along the way and stopped for supplies". I looked in the SUV and found the back seat and cargo area jammed packed with tents, lanterns sleeping bags and just about every type of camping gear imaginable. The agent told me

that they dropped over a grand in the sporting goods department before going on to buy groceries for a week. I guessed the Sheikh must have been a boy scout. It was pretty late when we finally made it to the cabins. As I was helping unload all of the stuff that they had brought, the Indian chef was busy preparing a late supper for the group. I had an armful gear in my hands walking into the cabin when the chef came up to me with some sort of special roll that he had prepared. I opened my mouth to take a taste, expecting exotic and foreign gourmet delight. I took a big bite and the chef, with a big smile on his face, exclaimed in broken English "TWINKIE". I introduced my "guide" to the Sheikh with the very long name. More precisely, I introduced him to his personal assistant who then translated to the Sheikh in his native language. I found this procedure a bit odd, because I knew that the Sheikh understood and spoke English. It was somewhat humorous later on when we were showing our horses. The Sheikh would whisper to his assistant and the assistant would ask me a question, such as "How old is that colt?" I answered "He turned three in March". The assistant would then whisper the answer to his boss. That is how we communicated.

the front seat snoring on his shoulder. The next morning, with Big Chief fully rested, we paraded our horses past the group and went through the somewhat odd communication system. "Yes", I would tell the assistant loudly, "that filly is out of a *Wiking daughter" and he would whisper it to the person we now knew as Ole Big Chief. In the end we sold a few horses, which was good. Perhaps more significant, and what I remember most, was the meeting of two diverse cultures; ultra rich and important visitors from a foreign land encountering poor hillbillies from rural Arkansas. It was indeed an adventure. We've come a long way in the last twenty years. Racing has become truly international and folks from many diverse cultures interact, associate and compete on a regular basis. Although I am not as involved as I used to be, I do occasionally get out and meet new people. Whether from the United States or from a foreign land, I still get the same question. "Where's Arkansas?"

We made plans for my "guide" to pick up the Sheikh before daylight the next morning and take him hunting. Back then we hunted with dogs and my friend said he would put the Sheikh on a deer stand, then drive across the hollow and turn out his dogs. He assured me his prize hounds (Running Lemon Walkers for those who have an interest) would jump a deer and run it right past the Sheikh, giving him a clear shot. It was a sure thing. I now fast forward to late morning the next day. My hillbilly friend comes driving up to the farm in his beat up old pickup truck. Next to him, asleep, snoring loudly and with his head on my friends shoulder is the Sheikh. "How did it go I asked?" "Oh it went pretty good, I guess. I could not remember this guy's long name so I've been calling him Ole Big Chief. Now Big Chief is a pretty big boy, almost wide as he is tall. When I took him to the deer stand, I took a look at that long skinny ladder and realized that we would have to go to Plan B because he wasn't going to make it up that tree. So I sat Big Chief on a big rock and told him just to sit there until he heard the dogs coming and then keep a sharp out eye for the deer they were chasing. It went just like I thought it would, but I never heard a shot. When I got back around, I found Ole Big Chief on the rock taking a little nap. I gotta go find my dogs. I guess I'll just let Big Chief sleep awhile longer and take him back to the cabins after I get my dogs." What a sight to behold, my hillbilly friend riding off in a beat up truck with Big Chief filling up

When Your Horse Needs Groceries - Feeding for Weight Gain In the September issue, I wrote about how you can use a body condition scoring system to determine whether your horse needs more or less groceries. So, how do you go about feeding your horse for either weight gain or weight loss? In general, from a feeding perspective, if you want to put weight on your horse, caloric intake must exceed caloric expenditure and the reverse is true if you wish to take weight off the horse. This article will focus on the feeding consideration for a horse in need of increased body condition and weight gain. A thin horse requires energy in the diet to ensure proper function of body processes and to build up fat stores. Weight gain in the horse is attributable to increases in fat and protein deposition. When caloric intake is less than caloric expenditure, the horse will continue to lose weight. When a horse does not have enough calories in his diet, he will utilize his fat stores until they are virtually depleted and if caloric intake remains low, he will begin to break down his own muscle tissue in an effort to maintain his most basic physiological needs. There are basically two nutrients that can supply the needed energy to increase the caloric content in the diet. These are carbohydrates and fat. In a horse’s diet, carbohydrates provide energy but the source and the type of digestion dictates the amount of energy ultimately available to the horse. Carbohydrates can be divided into two general categories, structural and nonstructural carbohydrates. Fiber components, cellulose and hemicellulose, known as structural carbohydrates, are digested by microorganisms primarily in the large intestine. Structural carbohydrates are important to gut health in the horse. Starches and sugars are nonstructural carbohydrates that are digested by enzymes and absorbed in the small intestine.

Fiber is the major component of grass and hay. The microorganisms within the large intestine (cecum and large colon) breakdown the fiber into a physiologically useable form called volatile fatty acids. These volatile fatty acids pass into the bloodstream and are transported to sites that need energy or for energy storage. Most of the cellulose and hemicellulose are digested by the intestinal microorganisms; these are considered digestible fiber components. The plant material also contains an indigestible noncarbohydrate fiber component called lignin. Lignin functions to give structural support to the plant stem and will increase as the plant matures. As the lignin component of the plant increases, the digestibility of the plant decreases, therefore, there will be less energy available for the horse to utilize. This is one component of plant quality. For example, a young plant harvested prior to maturity will have less lignin than a plant allowed to mature (production a seed head for grasses such as Orchardgrass or production of a flower for legumes such as alfalfa) and so the immature plant will be higher in digestible carbohydrates, thus the more immature the plant, the higher the plant quality. Fresh green spring pastures are going to higher in digestible fiber compared to sun-parched summer pastures. The digestibility of a pasture is usually higher than hay because the curing process of haymaking results in digestible fiber losses. When comparing the energy content of legume (i.e. alfalfa) and grass hays, legume hays are going to be higher in digestible energy compared to grass hays of similar quality. Maximizing forage quality should be the first adjustment when trying to put weight on a thin horse. When high quality forage is unavailable or if hay intake is difficult, the horse’s diet can be supplemented with

alternative high digestible fiber sources. The most common are beet pulp, soy hulls, alfalfa cubes or pellets. Beet pulp is approximately 80% digestible fibers (compared to hay which is approximately 50%). Soy hulls are a by-product of soybean production and are the skin of the beans that are knocked off before the oil is extracted. Soy hulls are slightly lower in digestibility than beet pulp. If a commercially designed feed has beet pulp or soy hulls as one of their primary ingredients, this feed is a good source of highly digestible fiber. The horse’s diet can also be supplemented using alfalfa cubes or pellets. Both are made with high quality alfalfa thus providing energy to the horse. Alfalfa cubes are often combined with Timothy grass hay in order to lower the calcium and protein content of the cube. Caution is needed if feeding only pellets. In order for the horse to maintain proper digestive health, he has to consume some long-stem plant product so some hay should always be available. The minimal amount of forage the horse needs to consume in order maintain proper digestive tract health is 1% of its body weight. Therefore, a 1000 pound (450 kg) horse needs to consume at least 10 pounds (4.5 kg) of forage per day just for maintenance of a reasonable microbial population. If using hay to increase body weight, the horse will need to be consuming 2% of its body weight in forage and then add 25% above that level. Thus, a 1000 pound horse should be consuming 25 pounds of forage per day for gradual weight gain. If the horse cannot gain weight on forage alone, the addition of some soluble carbohydrates (starch) in the form of grains is traditionally used. Obtaining energy from starch is more efficient than obtaining it from fiber because it is a simple enzymatic process. The end result is to feed fewer pounds of grain than hay to supply the equivalent amount of energy to the horse. Even though grains are an excellent source of starch, they can be hazardous to the digestive tract if fed in excess. The starch molecules are broken down by enzymes and the simple sugars are absorbed into the bloodstream. The sugars are then either utilized or stored. Any starch that passes into the large intestine will be fermented. This is undesirable because the energy produced by this method is less than the amount produced by enzymatic means and excessive starch fermentation decreases the pH of the cecum and large colon which decreases the efficiency of the microorganisms to digest fiber and produce energy. Because not all grains, thus starch molecules, are digested equally, the form of the grain that you feed is important. Oat starch is easily digestible however corn and barley starch is not easily digested. If the corn or barley grain is heated, for instance, it changes the starch mole-

cule and makes it more easily digested. The danger in feeding too much starch occurs because some horses are more sensitive to starch overload. If too much grain passes into the large intestine, a cascade of problems ensues. The by-product of starch fermentation is lactic acid. As the pH of the environment decreases, the microorganisms begin to die off and produce endotoxins. These endotoxins pass into the bloodstream and can induce laminitis (inflammation of the lamina of the foot). Traditionally, fat was added to horse’s diets to improve coat shine. However, fat has proven to be an excellent and safe (compared to grain) energy source. Because fat is a concentrated source of energy, it can be used to successfully put weight on a thin horse. Horses can consume either animal fats or vegetable oils. Animal fats are less palatable and only 75% digestible compared to vegetable oils which are 95% digestible. Many horses consuming animal fats have been shown to “go off feed” when higher fat levels are fed. Common sources of vegetable oils are corn oil, rice bran, linseed, soybean oil, and coconut oil. Rice bran is an excellent source because it is a combination of rice oil and highly digestible fiber. Although horses have no problem digesting fat, it must be gradually introduced into the horse’s diet. Horses can tolerate upwards of 15% of fat within their total diet. The advantage of using fat in the diet to increase body weight is that it helps avoid the chance of starch overload. Fat works best when it is in combination with grain and /or highly digestible fibers such as beet pulp or soy hulls. Many commercially produced high quality feeds contain upwards of 10% fat in their feed formulations. Achieving ideal body condition and body weight is possible by first providing high-quality forage and then adding a high calorie concentrate. Weight gain in a thin horse will happen gradually, so if you are patient you will see your horse bloom.

Can we take a minute to talk about So Big Is Better? We’re in the midst of a year with a Thoroughbred Triple Crown winner, a Hall of Fame-bound mare who could face him in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, a legion of militant, misguided fans trying to tell a neophyte owner what to do with his flashy chestnut champion, and Rachel Alexandra’s offspring lighting up Saratoga. The out-and-out coolest story going on between the rails, however, might stem from the Arabian world. So Big Is Better was the best racing Arabian in the country when he won the President of the U.A.E. Cup S. (G1) at Santa Anita in 2013, but instead of a triumphant return to the winner’s circle, he came back to the grandstand inside an equine ambulance with what appeared to be a careerending injury. After a year in the breeding shed, the 11-year-old son of Burning Sand lodged a comeback bid in the deep end, starting in the Grade 1 HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup at Sam Houston in March. It didn’t go well. He never connected with the field and was eased to the wire 50 ¾ behind winner Burning Fleet. To the outside observer, it was admittedly uncomfortable to watch. So Big Is Better lost by double digit margins in his first four starts back, but one of those was a second in

allowance company. He continued to show himself well in allowance company, but couldn’t seem to find that spark at the same level that won him his first Grade 1 at age nine two years earlier. It was then little surprise that So Big Is Better gave odds of 7-1 when he left the gate for the Grade 1 Delaware Park Arabian Classic H. on September 12. A wide-rallying trip got the horse to the front in the stretch, and away from the rest by three furlongs at the wire. If you’re going to find your spark, there are worse places than the richest Arabian race in North America. The lesson here? Owner/trainer Mark Powell knows what the heck he’s doing. So Big Is Better is a historic horse on several levels. His story, his longevity, and his stunning looks are all benchmarks for the racing breed for generations. With that being said, I decided to put a few aspects of So Big Is Better’s career into several levels of historical context. What this horse has accomplished over his life is truly remarkable. - A child born the same year as So Big Is Better is probably getting settled into the first semester of class in his or her sixth grade year. - One born the year So Big Is Better started running ought to be passing 14 • Arabian Finish Line • October 2015

notes in a third grade classroom. - One of the best 3-year-old Thoroughbred crops in recent memory hit their sophomore years at the same time as So Big Is Better, including Hall of Famer Curlin, Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, Belmont Stakes-winning filly Rags to Riches, and the hard-trying Hard Spun, to name a few. This group has already settled in as some of the breed’s most prominent sires, except for Rags to Riches, who is still trying to find her legs as a broodmare. - So Big Is Better has raced 64 times, and covered 476.96 furlongs in the process. That equals out to 59.62 miles – more than two marathons, or roughly the distance between Delaware Park and Parx Racing. - His average earnings per year over his eight seasons of racing is $48,869, which was roughly the median household income for a family in South Dakota in 2013. - So Big Is Better has crisscrossed the country, racing at 18 different tracks. If you punch each stop the horse has made into Google Maps, it comes out to roughly 48,226 miles on the road. Of course, that is taking the route suggested by the program and assumes he went straight from one track to the next. Adding in trips to the farm for layup and his stud career, it’s probably closer to 50,000. - So Big is Better was two years old

when Pioneerof the Nile, a Grade 1 winner and eventual sire of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, was born. - The oldest Thoroughbreds to win graded stakes in North America are Musketier, who won the Canadian Grade 3 Singspiel Stakes in 2012 and Calidoscopio winner of the Brooklyn H. (G2) at Belmont Park, both at age 10. A few horses, including the mighty John Henry, are tied for the oldest to win a Grade 1 at nine years old. - His greatest margin of victory was 10 lengths during a 2011 allowance race at Pleasanton. His greatest margin of

defeat came in his comeback start in 2015. - So Big Is Better won 28 races at distances from 4 ½ furlongs to 1 ¼ miles, with an average winning distance of roughly 7.21 furlongs. - Twenty-eight different jockeys have ridden the horse in at least one race, enough to fill the Kentucky Derby gate with eight left to cheer them on. Fittingly, the horse’s first jockey, Robert Paz, was aboard once again for his Delaware Park Arabian Classic score.

By Beth Minnich Chair, Research Advisory Panel, Arabian Horse Foundation Humans have forged a unique bond with the horse and an important part of that relationship includes the desire to provide the best possible veterinary care for these magnificent animals. An organization that has been quietly going about supporting equine health research is the Arabian Horse Foundation (also known as the Arabian Horse Association Charity.) The Foundation is the charitable arm of the Arabian Horse Association and the Foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mission is to provide funding support for equine health research, youth, education, and rescue & rehoming. The Foundation has a Board of Directors separate from the Arabian Horse Association and is financially supported solely through donations from the Arabian horse community. The research arm of the Foundation is committed to supporting equine

research directed at improving the health of the Arabian horse, especially projects focused on issues of particular concern to the Arabian breed. Since 2008, when the Foundation became involved in funding equine health research, over $65,000 has been distributed to a variety of projects, including collaborations with some of the top veterinary research programs in the world, such as UC Davis, Cornell University, the University of Florida, and the Morris Animal Foundation.

The Foundation has also donated to the rebuilding fund at the Equine Reproduction Laboratory at Colorado State University, which was destroyed by fire in 2011.

Although the Foundation has had limited funds available, through these dedicated efforts the Foundation has been successful in not only supporting, but also moving forward, important research in genetic conditions affecting the Arabian horse; including the development of genetic tests for the neurologic disorders Cerebellar Abiotrophy and Lavender Foal Syn-

Equine Metabolic Syndrome in the Arabian Horse This project was initiated in 2010 by Dr. Samantha Brooks, previously at Cornell University and now located at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) is a metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance, obesity and/or regional fat deposits, and often the development of laminitis. As horse owners are very aware, laminitis can be debilitating and even life threatening. The Arabian breed has been shown to be at moderate risk for EMS and as a historical contributor to the development of many other breeds, the Arabian was ideally suited for this project. The goal of this investigation is to discover molecular biomarkers and pathways associated with obesity and insulin resistance in the horse. This study has the potential to assist owners in more readily identifying horses at greater risk of EMS – allowing for improved management of these individuals, especially in regard to feeding and exercise programs. In addition, given the influence the Arabian has had on other breeds, the project also has the potential to provide important information for the health management of horses in general. Preliminary results include genetic mapping and discovery of a specific genetic area (locus) conferring risk for laminitis in the Arabian horse. This genetic marker is very promising as a functional hypothesis for the development of EMS and subsequent laminitis. Future work for this project involves: 1) validating this allele with additional sampling, in order to confirm the findings and meet the stringent requirements for publication and application of the work, and 2) to also develop definitive diagnostic criteria for EMS, hyperinsulinemia and sub-acute laminitis for clinical use and discrete categorization of individuals used in genetic mapping.

Juvenile Idiopathic Epilepsy in the Arabian Horse This project, initiated in 2013 by Dr. Samantha Brooks at the University of Florida in Gainesville, seeks to identify the genetic cause of Juvenile Idiopathic Epilepsy (JIE) in the Arabian horse and ultimately develop a diagnostic test to assist owners and breeders in identifying carrier breeding stock. The preliminary data from this project shows some exciting results and this project is entering into a validation phase, as the Brooks’ group has identified a candidate genetic marker that requires further investigation. As such, samples from horses who have been diagnosed with JIE (either active cases or in the past) are greatly needed, as well as unaffected relatives of these horses to serve as controls. The seizures exhibited by foals with JIE generally begin with muscle stiffness all over the body and the foal might fall over. After the stiffening ceases, rapid muscle contractions then begin all over 18 • Arabian Finish Line • October 2015

the body. The seizures can last from only a few seconds up to about 5 minutes. During this time the horse may lose consciousness, and could possibly injure itself while either falling over or thrashing on the ground. Once the episode has ended, the foal usually exhibits some temporary post-seizure signs including blindness, lethargic behavior, and disorientation. Once the horse has outgrown the seizures it can usually go on to live a normal healthy life. Anti-seizure medications have been effective in reducing frequency and severity of the seizures and are helpful in decreasing risk of injury during an episode. While JIE is thought to be a genetic disorder, no extensive work has been done to identify the exact genetic mode of inheritance or the proposed relationship with Lavender Foal Syndrome. The Effect of Hoof Trimming on the Medio-Lateral and Dorso-Palmar Load Distribution in Arabian Horses This is a newly funded project with Dr. Babak Faramarzi at Western University. This project is an innovative study that examines hoof imbalance, which is a leading cause of foot lameness. Many musculoskeletal injuries originate from hoof imbalances and asymmetrical force distribution across the joints, bones and related ligaments, and tendons are associated with the incidence of catastrophic injuries. This project is built upon a previously funded Foundation research project in which hoof strike data was gathered from a group of Arabian horses as they walked on a pressure plate, once before and once after hoof trimming. Data from this project will be analyzed through a software upgrade, which will work with the existing information, to examine biomechanical variables including vertical force, contact area and peak contact pressure at the medial, lateral, toe and heel regions of the fore-hooves. Data from before and after trimming will be compared using statistical analyses. The results of the study will provide objective

data on load distribution at different regions of the hoof in response to regular trimming. The results will provide valuable information on medio-lateral and toe-heel balance in Arabian horses and will create a benchmark for future studies, including a possible study of the effects of different trimming / shoeing practices currently used in Arabian horses. Once Kontiki’s foals from his 1972 and 1973 crops hit the track, it was clear that he was indeed a sire of top racing stock. Tiki Sahiber Ku was three times U.S. National Champion Racehorse. Tiki Tessar was also named National Champion Racehorse and inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame. Other race winners by Kontiki included Bint Karita Ku, Ibn Kontiki, Jikis Ellice, Tikis Bint Samia, Tikis Lilly Ku, and Tikis Starlit. Two of Kontiki’s daughters, Jikis Ellice and Kyla Tiki, also were Hall of Fame inductees. Nineteen of Kontiki’s foals (15 mares and 4 stallions) produced offspring. In short order, it was clear that his grandget had inherited his winning ways and that his legacy was assured. Among Kontiki’s best-known grandget are By Golly+/, Racehorse of the Year and Hall of Fame inductee; Flaming Rod, 3-Year-Old Colt of the Year; Flaming Tron Ku, two-time Darley Older Horse of the Year and Hall of Fame inductee; Flying Tessie+, Race Mare of the Year and Hall of Fame inductee; Samcherie, Darley Older Mare of the Year and Hall of Fame inductee; Sam Tiki+, Darley Champion 3-Year-Old Colt and Hall of Fame inductee; and Shawna Dew+, Race Mare of the Year and Hall of Fame inductee. The influence of Kontiki—who was himself inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1995, the first year the honor was

In February 1968, when Kontiki’s racing career was barely underway, and he had only two foals on the ground, his breeder, Lloyd Rosenvold, made a prescient statement: “Someone has suggested that Kontiki is to Arabian racing what Man O’ War was to Thoroughbred racing. It has also been suggested that like the Godolphin Arabian, who was one of the great progenitors of the Thoroughbred breed, Kontiki will be the founder of a great racing dynasty. Is this suggestion extravagant? I hardly think so, for as of now, prospects look good. Time will be the great arbiter.” Fortunately, Dr. Rosenvold, who died in 2003, lived long enough to see that dynasty come to fruition.

Paddys Day and RB Frynch Broad Win Big in Texas By Cory Kwok (@SwaggyCDawg) Paddys Day Prevails In Texas Arabian Derby (Saturday 8/29/2015) -- Paddys Day, behind for most of the race, spotted a considerable gap near the backstretch to Es Mi Cielo (Burning Sand Heaven Kan Wait, by Virgule Al Maury) before steadily climbing back into contention. He overcame a wide trip into the homestretch to kick clear of his brave, game rival inside the final sixteenths. Under solid urging by jockey Kelsi Purcell he managed a two-length triumph in the Grade III $20,000 Texas Arabian Derby at Retama Park. ES Mi Cielo was second and RB Moose third, followed by Southerland and TA My Virgule.

Paddys Day completed the 1 1/16 mile trip in track record time of 1:55.70. This was nearly a second (.89 to be exact) better than the prior record holder Tour De France (Bengali D'Albret - Rein Danse, by Wiking), who clocked in at 1:56.59 back on September 28, 2006 in another running of the Texas Arabian Derby. F Sixteen and Jewell AA Wow the Crowd at Delaware Park By Stephanie J. Corum

Delaware Park Arabian Derby (G2) When the boys arrived in the paddock for the Delaware Park Arabian Derby (G2) on August 22, there was one that stood out from the crowd. A big, strong 4-year-old colt appropriately named F Sixteen. He looked every part a racehorse even though he was only making his third lifetime start. After having won his first two starts by a combined total of 11 lengths, F Sixteen, trained by Randy Nunley, was instilled as the heavy favorite in the 1 ¼ mile grade 2 race. There was some bumping and jostling involving numerous horses at the start. When they settled down, Front Rowe and Fearsome (who happens to be a 4-year-old full brother to F Sixteen through embryo transfer) raced on the lead while F Sixteen galloped

easily at the back of the pack. He was 4-wide going into the turn, but ate up the ground with a huge stride and easily took over the lead. Easter Man, who was well placed early, was no match for F Sixteen as he ran by. Under Carol Cedeno, F Sixteen extended his lead to 18 at the wire, finishing the race in 2:18.58. Delaware Park Arabian Juvenile Fillies Championship (G3) It’s no secret there’s a shortage of Arabian racehorses, and nowhere is that more evident than in the 3-yearold division (foals of 2012). The scratch of Sand Dove left only four to go postward in the 1 mile 70 yard contest for 3-year-old fillies. Madgicall, owned by Cre Run Enterprises, raced along the rail and showed the way for the first 6 furlongs. Jewell AA stalked the leader under patient handling from jockey Ricardo Chiappe, moved to the lead with a 2-wide move at the top of the stretch, and then drew clear as she was kept to task. RB Big N Rich, making her first lifetime start for owner Rosebrook Farms, was well placed early on and closed steadily to finish second best. Madgicall tired for third followed by Lady Haha who showed little. The final time was 1:56.50. ince 1986 the very best Arabian horses have competed at Delaware Park. Cre Run has been proud to support this meet with racing many wonderful Arabian horses over the years. It is sad to say but Arabian racing at Delaware Park is at a critical point in its existence. This meet barely survived in 2015 with fewer than 60 horses running. If this meet is not supported in 2016 with more than 60 horses, then we will lose the only truly, and we mean truly, professional race meet in the United States.

It has always been our hope that in time, Texas would rise to equal Delaware Park. Because of this Cre Run has supported from its inception many Texas Stakes races, knowing had we not traveled to Texas, the race would have been lost. Because of the recent disputes between the Texas Legislature and the Texas Racing Commission, it leaves little positive hope and support for Texas horsemen. If the Texas tracks are not allowed to run on Jan 1st 2016 and if Delaware Park does not get positive commitment from horsemen, then Arabian racing as we know it in the United States will not exist. Cre Run will continue to support Delaware Park as long as there is a meet. We hope that when you think about choosing where you will be running your Arabians in 2016, you give considerable thought to the overall success of Arabian racing in this country.
