Editor's Notes

By Stephanie J. Corum

As I write this the entries for the President of the UAE Cup S. (Gr. 1) have just been published. This is the fourth major race in as many weeks. I commend the owners and trainers for stepping up and filling each race with full, high quality fields. Several horses have run weekly and so far so good. Knock on wood that all the horses come home safely on Saturday and we will have pulled it off. The races so far have been outstanding. Long, duelling stretch drives between rivals meeting more than once. The race Saturday at Churchill Downs could determine Horse of the Year and that's how it should be. I went to the Buzz Brauininger Arabian Distaff H. (Gr. 1), missed the Delaware Park Arabian Classic H. (Gr. 1) and most recently was at Los Alamitos for the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Arabian Cup Diamond Jewel (Gr. 2). There's been something at these races that we've been missing and that has been fun. The races have had good crowds who sat together and enjoyed each other's company. This kind of fun has had us looking forward to the next event and that's a good thing! It's been quite a few years since I've seen this kind of enthusiasm. It is due to the generosity of numerous sponsors and the hard work and dedication of many individuals. This is very, very good news for the Arabian racing industry. Momentum has been building through this year, and it has carried into fall. It's up to all of us to continue that enthusiasm. I can promise you that Arabian Finish Line will.

Evie Sweeney live streamed on Facebook all evening at Los Alamitos - bringing the event to those who couldn't be there in person. We had a fun conversation in the paddock prior to the big race. Social media coverage like this allows us to easily bring Arabian racing to more people.

UPDATE Reflecting on the First Year of HARC Races by Evie Sweeney We are nearing the end of our first year for HARC races and racing forums in the USA. Like any first-year venture, we were excited about getting things going quickly, and as usual with these new initiatives, things do not progress as we quickly as we think they should. For example, two of the five states that we’d hoped could host a race offering the HARC added money were cancelled: Michigan and Delaware. Michigan’s Arabian racing scene is unfortunately struggling with inadequate horse numbers, and was unable to fill a race. Therefore, no HARC added money could be offered. And though Delaware had plenty of races to offer, it didn’t have any HARC-eligible horses running. However, juxtaposed to this picture is Dartyn Kriss SWA, the pure Polish mare who ran in two of the other HARC races, and walked away with $5520 in HARC money this year. She was the only HARC horse to run in the HARC race in Colorado, then shipped to California’s HARC race at Pleasanton in June and picked up another piece of the pie. Certainly, Dartyn Kriss’ owner/breeder, Dr. Jim Wetzel, was just fine knowing he was taking home the majority of the earnings! Then, take Robert Irlando, owner of the HARC-nominated Zells Bells (SW Zell x Bonita Lorena, by Wiking), who demonstrated that HARC horses can be competitive at all levels after Zells Bells dueled valiantly with the Burning Sand colt, Raineing Sand, only to lose by a nose… but also beating two other Burning Sand progeny in the race by over 7 lengths! Irlando walked away not only with his share of the purse, but also with a HARC check for $1240 as the owner. Jane Teutsch received $1240 from HARC as the breeder. Texas will offer the last HARC race of 2017 on November 26 at Retama Park. And what is happening with the $8,000 from the two cancelled races? It’s going directly into the pot for 2017… on top of the $25,000… making the race payouts next year even higher. If there is only one HARC horse in a race, it will get the whole pot all over again. And that will be one happy owner! So, start thinking about your HARC horses for next year. We will continue to offer HARC Arabian Racing Forums to the Arabian show horse community as well, investing and cultivating new interest from this group of people who are already passionate about breeding and owning Arabian horses. A big thank you to two groups of people who helped with this effort: My forum co-hosts (Pamela Burton and Denise Gault) and our Partnership Managers (Stephanie Corum, Ken and Valerie Danyluk, Denise Gault, Amanda Roxborough, Claudia Spears, and Joe and Susan Willis). This group will continue cultivating, mentoring and welcoming newcomers to the sport. Thanks also to the following organizations and individuals for donating raffle items at each of the forums: Arabian Jockey Club for sponsoring a VIP Day at the Races; Arabian Racing Cup for sponsoring a VIP trip to the 2017 Darley Awards; Lynn Bennett for donating a free breeding to the HARC stallion, Favoritt; and Om El Arab for donating a bottle of their signature estate Cabernet Sauvignon. After a year of doing these seminars, it has become apparent to me that this process of cultivating new owners to Arabian racing will be a 3- to 5- year endeavor. This first year was dedicated to overcoming stigmas, raising awareness, and educating a handful of influential leaders in the Arabian show community. Next year, those handful of owners will have their first full year of experience in Arabian racing and become ambassadors of the sport to their peers. It is important for us to educate people about the racing opportunities right now for introducing new bloodlines to be tested on the track. With the downturn in breeding beginning in the mid 2000’s and the increase of exportation of racing horses as well as proven broodmares and young prospects from the USA, it is an ideal time to jump in with new bloodlines as the pipeline begins to fill up again. The odds of winning money are the best they have been in decades. Following that, we’ll start to 10 • Arabian Finish Line • October 2016

see a trickling in of new people to the sport that will gain momentum year by year. For this year, I have refocused my expectations after several experiences (i.e. racing forums) to formulate a supported opinion about our path ahead. And I am thrilled to report that the tipping point is happening; people are talking; curiosity is stirring. I am approached at every single Arabian show function I attend with questions. In fact, the Executive Director of the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show won’t stop bugging me about bringing back Arabian racing at Turf Paradise in Phoenix, and tapping into the thriving Arabian breeding community in Scottsdale – the most concentrated area for Arabian horses in the world, and a mecca for affluent Arabian horse owners. We are looking for a sponsor to support the continuation of the racing forums next year so we can continue building on our momentum, and will provide any announcements when they become available. Meanwhile, HARC has shown the United States that it is here to stay, and will continue to incentivize those HARC-bred horses. We have nominated dozens of HARC runners, stallions and broodmares. We have signed up individual members. We have partnered with Arabian Origins Marketing… an e-marketing company that services over 40,000 members of the world’s Arabian horse community. And we have educated and planted seeds in the minds of thousands of Arabian horse enthusiasts on the sport of Arabian racing. The moral of the story? HARC is here to stay. HARC will continue to motivate heritage-line breeders. HARC will uncover gems of race horses and racing lines. HARC will expand our racing gene pool. HARC will bring in new people to Arabian racing in the United States. So start thinking about your HARC horses for next year. It’s a win-win for all involved.

I

just got notice from Go Daddy, our web hosting company, that it was time to renew our service contract and domain name for Magic Springs Farm. We have to thank our old partner, Morris Woods, for thinking of the catchy name for our web site, www.bigredstud.com. No, not a porn site, it was centered around our recently deceased stallion, KA Czubuthan, our breeding program and horses. That was over fifteen years ago. It is now badly outdated. Back in the early eighties there was no such thing as web sites and our stallion, the *Orzel son, Brusally Orzelost (sire of Czubuthan), was promoted in Dr. Sam's twelve page monthly newspaper, The Arabian Racing News (of which I still have copies). We were actively involved with Arabian racing for many years. They were good years. Maybe not from an earnings per start or Darley Award perspective, but good despite the many hardships and disappointments that all horse owners experience. More than winning races or receiving awards, one of the things I miss most is being on the backside as dawn was breaking. Cleaning a stall or hanging a horse on the walker. Going trackside with (my mentors) Bob Knight or Billy Lewis to watch the horses work. To breath the sweet perfume of horse sweat and manure. To take a break when the training track closed to go to the cafe and shoot the breeze with trainers, jockeys and owners. Those were good days. Here on the farm we often had as many as thirty horses. Breeding, training, watching the young ones race in the pastures. How many nights we stayed awake with our pregnant mares and despite knowing better and having years of experience, did not believe that the new-born foal would stand and suck unless we helped it. Vicki, Lyndon and I, along with a slew of horse loving high school kids had a genuine horse operation going. Of course, I had a real job in order to pay for it. In 2007 Arabian racing was in steep decline. Horses, own-

ers and races were on a downhill trajectory. Being an astute businessman, I thought the time was right to increase our breeding program and prepare for the revival of racing and anticipated demand for horses. I had been assured that Texas was going to approve slots and in a couple of years there would be all the $12,000 maiden races an owner could fill. Billy Lewis agreed and sent us a couple of other young horses on some kind of partnership deal that we would figure out later. We were ready! As you are aware, that Texas slot deal is still in the works. We were trying to catch a falling knife (trying to predict the bottom of the market) and never had the benefit of a "dead cat bounce" (a financial term derived from the idea that even a dead cat will bounce if it falls from a great height, meaning a temporary recovery in market prices will occur after a substantial fall.) What we did end up with was a whole bunch of endurance prospects, the selling of which is a story unto itself, that I will write at a later date. Somewhere about that time I did some financial planning and realized that just about all of our retirement funds had been invested in our horses and that our expectations for profitability were just a teeny-weeny unrealistic. I had started a new company, which was beginning to take up an enormous amount of my time. Being an astute businessman, I thought that perhaps the potential rate of return associated with this business might be greater than Arabian racing. Luckily this time I was correct, and our discretionary spending shifted away from horses and into a 401K. So that answers the question as to why we are not active in Arabian racing any longer. And to question as to why don't we get back into the game now that it has become an international phenomenon with awesome potential; well, that could be a long answer and perhaps fill a whole new column. In short, we now have six wonderful grandchildren that command our love and attention. Spectacularly, we have recently discovered this wonderful new thing called "vacation" that we never knew existed. It's when you go somewhere for no particular reason, eat and drink a lot, and do fun things. Who knew?

12 • Arabian Finish Line • October 2016

Beyond those substitute activities, which have displaced our racing passion and horse-related insanity, there is a more melancholy emotion attached to where we are now. It is sort of a "been there, done that, time to move on feeling. The Daryl Awards are not exactly red carpet material and most folks wouldn't get the inside jokes. Billy Lewis has gone to that big poker game in the sky. Rumor has it that Bob Knight silently retreated into the dark interior of Texas. The Big Red Stud, once the center of our horse world, lies peacefully at the bottom of his pasture. Getting back in the game just wouldn't be the same. So although we don't have any horses to sell or stallions to promote, I will still renew our outdated web site. I will reread the KA Czubuthan story, "Beating The Odds", for the hundredth time and browse the photos of our sale prospects who all now have new homes. I will remember fondly those days. We have not abandoned Arabian racing. Vicki and I still have many wonderful friends in the racing community, whose exploits we follow on Facebook and in this magazine. We look forward to seeing them at our occasional excursions to the races or Arabian events. Here on the farm, we have two beautiful, but beyond breeding age, KA Czubuthan daughters (pictured left to right MW Lady Z and MW Miss Zuby) that grace our pasture along with a few other retirees and riding horses. We also have our very last Czubuthan that we are just now breaking out. He's a very nice gelding... I guess he's HARC eligible... Moves real strong, but smooth...Heck... He might even be a prospect. These are still very good days.

Follow Joe on Twitter at @DRFNevills Every Labor Day weekend, I make a brief sojourn back to my hometown in Central Michigan and make a detour on my way back toward Kentucky to visit the races at the Van Wert County Fair in Van Wert, Ohio. I’ve written about the Van Wert County Fair races frequently over the years, but if you’re new to the party, it is a single-day Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse meet in rural northwestern Ohio that throws back to the days before you needed fancy things like a jumbotron or an inside rail to run some horses around a circle in front of an appreciative crowd. It’s like clockwork. I’ve missed more Kentucky Derbies than Van Wert County Fairs since I started going to the Ohio races in 2011. It’s become a milepost of the year for me, and gives me an opportunity to reflect on the happenings that have taken place in my life since my last visit to the humble oval 364 days earlier. During my most recent trip to Van Wert, I sat in the weathered wooden grandstand between races and pondered just what exactly it was about this place that elicits this response out of me. Why are the Van Wert County Fair races so important to my life that I take the long way home just so I can be a bystander for a handful of horse races that are so low on the totem pole they don’t even get counted by Equibase? Part of it is my desire to document the undocumented. As far as I know, there are no official video replays of the races, and the media coverage is sparse and local. If you don’t catch it as it’s happening, it’s lost to the ether forever. It feels good to be a resource for sharing something that most of the world – racing or otherwise – would

never get to see otherwise. Part of it is my fear of losing another cherished racing venue. Van Wert seems to be in a much better spot than it was five years ago, but lower-level racing is a rapidly disappearing way of life, and the wounds are still fresh from the closures of Great Lakes Downs and Mount Pleasant Meadows. It’s hard to have a history when they keep tearing down your monuments. I’ve come to treat the places I like as though they are a gravely sick friend – I take the time to cherish and document every moment I can with them while also fortifying my defenses because it could all be taken away at any moment, and with it, a little bit of safety of familiarity. If and when it’s gone, these things don’t tend to come back. At the time though, I was feeling too good about where I was to consider the grim realities of why I like the things I do. That’s when the light bulb flickered on. The reason the Van Wert County Fair is so important to the mosaic of my life is that it’s one of my racing happy places. Many longtime fans and participants in racing have at least one of these – a place where a muddied and bustling sport can still be enjoyed in a pure form. A place you look forward to reaching as soon as you get in the car at the beginning of the day and leave planning the next time you’ll be there. The horse racing industry knows as many ways to drag a person down as it has ways to get into Continued page 22

Thoughts on Our Racehorses’ Gene Pool It may seem to those of you who are regular monthly readers of this column that I am placing you on genetic overload with the past couple of articles and you are wishing that I would please retire from these genetic articles…maybe when I retire to an old folks genome!!! Anyway… When we think about what we desire in a racehorse the characteristics such as speed, stamina, soundness, constitution and character come to mind. The desire to improve the definitive traits that create a phenomenal racehorse have caused the interbreeding of closely related individuals. We must keep in mind that inbreeding is the only tool that we can use to manipulate the genetic puzzle to obtain substantial improvement in the racing ability of our horses…provided it is done in a carefully planned and deliberately well thought our manner. I have mentioned the term inbreeding. So what is inbreeding and why do we use it in the racehorse world? By definition, inbreeding is the mating of relatives with the purpose of fixing certain traits or influencing certain ancestors upon the offspring. The Thoroughbred, for example, has been intensely inbred and has been closely inbred from time to time over the past 300 years. Even more inbred were the imported oriental horses at the time (Arab and Barb) where the Arabs practiced inbreeding of their favorite horses as well as inbreeding due to the geographic isolation in that desert region. So, all of this inbreeding must have some drawbacks. Well, if you follow the famous British naturalist of the 18th century, Charles R. Darwin, there are a few generalities to consider when dealing with inbreeding. Firstly, close inbreeding can cause a loss of vigor, fertility and mature body size. Secondly, the negative effects of inbreeding do not become evident immediately but the positive effects so. And thirdly, the big advantage of inbreeding in order to maintain and

enhance desirable characteristics is well established and therefore far outweighs the deleterious effects. Let’s take a look at some of these points in terms of our racehorses. Loss of Vigor Vigor or heterosis is the increase in characteristics such as size, growth rate, fertility, etc. over those of the parents. Vigor is created by mating two different purebred lines that have certain desirable traits. Thus the first generation offspring generally show the desired traits of both parents but in greater measure. There are two school of thoughts on this point. One is that only in those strains that were not vigorous to begin with has vigor been lost. In other words, if the breeding stock selected was not very vigorous and those ancestors being inbred to also were not very vigorous, then the inbred foals will not be very vigorous. If you follow this line of thinking then, inbreeding to vigorous strains only, loss of vigor does not occur because of inbreeding. Oh boy…my brain is hurting. The other school of thought is that continued inbreeding for certain prototypes will continually cause a decline in the diversity of the gene pool from which the current breeding population is drawn. We know that the racehorse world is producing more fragile horses. Although larger at a younger age and more muscular, their bone structures have suffered and appear to be getting lighter and frailer…sounds like a recipe for disaster given that the lower parts of a horse's legs have no muscle but are composed of a network of bones, tendons and ligaments...thus loss of vigor. Loss of Fertility The physical and structural results of inbreeding become apparent if the foal inherits the racing ability of the ancestor to whom he or she is inbred. If the two parents are strong and robust with good constitutions and are known to produce healthy foals, their inbred foals will also be strong and

Championship Fight in the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Arabian Cup S. (G2) - Diamond Jewel Reprinted with permission from Pamela Burton, www.horsereporter.com.

Sand Victor photos courtesy of Los Alamitos Publicity.

In a nail-biting battle to the finish line, Sand Victor under Hugo Herrera delivered another shock to hot favorite Paddys Day to win the $48,700 Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Arabian Cup Diamond Jewel (G2) on Saturday, September 17 at Los Alamitos, California. Bred and owned by Betty and Joseph Gillis, the Terri Eatontrained Sand Victor proved that his win over Paddys Day in the second leg of the Sheikh Zayed Cup Triple Crown race in Pleasanton was no fluke, though the margin of victory had reduced from two lengths in that 6-furlong race to a neck in Saturday’s contest over a mile. Sand Victor, however, still fell short of winning the $150,000 bonus as Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup Triple Crown Champion, and that honor went to Paddys Day for the second consecutive year. Paddys Day won the first leg in Houston to earn 8 points, and with 7 points each in the second and third legs finished with 22 points. Sand Victor did not take part in the first leg and with 8 points each for winning the second and third legs, finished with 16 points. The nine-horse race soon became a two-horse battle after Twice Rich, ridden by apprentice jockey Rosie Higgins, the wife of Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux who was also present, set the pace. Paddy's Day, ridden by Richard Mullen, had a lot more to do while Sand Victor was swiftly driven to the lead with about two furlongs left.

In the final furlong, Sand Victor and Paddys Day battled stride for stride but the grey held on to win by a neck from the bay favorite. While Sand Victor’s connections walked away with a major slice of the $48,700 on offer for Saturday’s race, owner-trainer Scott Powell will receive the $150,000 bonus for the Triple Crown Champion’s title win by Paddy's Day. Sand Victor’s trainer Terri Eaton said, “He is a very nice horse and today he showed a lot of guts and heart.” Mr. Boutros Boutros, Emirates’ Divisional Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications, Marketing & Brand, Representatives of the UAE Embassy in US, Ms. Lara Sawaya, Executive Director of HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival, Chairperson of the International Federation of Horse Racing Academies (IFHRA), Chairperson of Ladies & Apprentice Racing Committees in the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities (IFAHR), Hall of Famer and America’s top female jockey Julie Krone and Michelle Morgan, Chief Steward of the Arabian Racing Cup, were among others who gave away the trophies to the winning connections.

18 • Arabian Finish Line • October 2016

Boutros Boutros hailed the success of the HH Sheikh Mansoor Festival in promoting both purebred Arabian racing as well as the culture and heritage of the UAE all over the globe. Ms. Lara Sawaya announced that Saturday’s winner Sand Victor and Paddys Day along with Desert Honour are likely to be the trio of horses that will be invited from the US to take a shot at the Euros 1.2 million Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Crown Jewel (Group 1), the world’s richest race for Purebred Arabian horses that will be run on November 13, 2016 in Abu Dhabi. “With such stars like Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux, another Hall of Famer and the first female jockey to win a Triple Crown race and a Breeder’s Cup race – Julie Krone, and a large crowd in attendance, today’s final leg of the Tri-

ple Crown went down to the wire. It was such a great finish and Abu Dhabi and the purebred Arabian fraternity will be looking forward to watching these great horses compete against the world’s best in the richest race for Arabians,” said Ms. Sawaya. “After this we just have one more race in the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup, the Festival’s premier race series and that will be held in Toulouse next month,” Ms. Sawaya said. Hall of Fame Jockey to be Ambassador for HH Sheikh Mansoor Festival Reprinted with permission from Pamela Burton, www. horsereporter.com. The first female jockey to win the a USA Triple Crown race and a Breeder’s Cup race – Julie Krone - has been tapped as an Ambassador for the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival. Ms. Lara Sawaya, Executive Director of HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival, Chairperson of the International Federation of Horse Racing Academies (IFHRA), Chairperson of Ladies & Apprentice Racing Committees in the International Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities (IFAHR), made the announcement at the prize distribution ceremony of the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Arabian Cup Diamond Jewel, a Grade II race run on Saturday, September 17 2016, at Los Alamitos, California. “I am honored to be named as one of the Ambassadors of the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival,” said the 53-year-old retired American jockey, who has amassed a whopping 3,704 winners. “It is a tremendous honor for me,” she said after attending the final leg of the three-race Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Triple Crown. Commenting on the race in which 9 purebred Arabians contested the Grade II event over a mile, Krone said, “This

Sheikh Mansoor Festival race is so beautiful and exciting. It was nice to see so much speed and the horses battling so hard to the finish. The two horses (Sand Victor and Paddys Day) fighting so hard and putting everything into it, a very exciting race.” In 1993, Krone won the Belmont Stakes on Colonial Affair to become the first female jockey to win a Triple Crown race and then in 2000 was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Krone also became the first female jockey to win a Breeders’ Cup race in 2003 on Halfbridled. She has also been honored by induction into the National Women’s Hall of Fame and the Cowgirl Hall of Fame. Ms. Sawaya said: “We are really proud to have Julie Krone as one of our Ambassadors. The Festival thanks her for accepting to be our Ambassador.” “She will be a huge boost to the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival which is the brain-child of HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs. The Festival’s logo is ‘One World, 6 Continents’ and Krone will be part of the Festival’s finale from November 7 to 14 in Abu Dhabi, the city which is now the second home of jockeys in the world,” Ms. Sawaya said. Making Claims cont. into the business. When you find that place that makes you feel the most like yourself, helps you remember why you devoted a chunk of your life to horses trying to outrun each other, and serves as your inspiration to carry on when it feels like flipping burgers would have been a sounder life decision, you’ve got to keep that place in your life, both physically and in your mind.

Van Wert is my oasis when the crush of Triple Crown season or a marathon auction becomes nearly unbearable. It is my carrot on a string to push through a busy August schedule because this single day of racing will be absolutely worth it. As schedules grow busier, a single day in your happy place can mean a lot. For a long time, this title belonged to Mount Pleasant Meadows. In some ways, it still does. I’m far from the only one who still goes in to check the property from time to time. Nowadays, the visits are usually blighted with a feeling of grief as I watch the area look less and less like the place where my grandpa brought me to my first races, and where I sharpened my abilities to eventually work for the likes of the Daily Racing Form and Arabian Finish Line. A big part of my life rests on that land, and now it is gone. On paper, that sounds like it would be the opposite of a happy place.

But no bulldozer can take away the memories and memorabilia I have amassed from the track over the past two decades. The grandstand still has the same smell it did when the horses were still there - equal parts mustiness, leather baking in the sun, dirt, grass, and fresh air - and sitting on the aluminum bleachers with a light breeze rolling in from the cornfields to the north can jog the memory pretty quickly. Am I a ghost haunting a place no longer meant for me? Sure. But it’s how I stay in touch with the ghosts coming around that tight final turn and the ones cheering them on. That feeling, the memory of that feeling and keeping it alive, is a happy place. Work hard to find the Van Wert in front of you or the Mount Pleasant Meadows in your memories. We all need a place for our minds to wander when they get lost. 22 • Arabian Finish Line • October 2016

A Classic for Paddys Day Off since July 16, Paddys Day was still the heavy favorite in the grade 1, $50,000 Delaware Park Arabian Classic H. He faced a formidable field including Santa Anita winner Thess Is Awesome and the filly RB Madymoiselle, who won the Delaware Park Arabian Derby (G2), only 7 days prior.

Photo copyright Hoofprints Inc.

At the start, Paddys Day broke well from the outside and moved towards the rail. Thess Is Awesome drifted way out but then sprinted to the lead and came over towards the inside. Paddys Day stalked in behind him, but moved along the rail into the lead after a half-mile. RB Madymoiselle followed along the rail and moved past Thess Is Awesome into second. She tried to go with the leader, but he was simply too much horse. Jockey Ricardo Chappe kept Paddys Day safely in front and won by 5 lengths over RB Madymoiselle and Thess Is Awesome with F Sixteen fourth. The 1 1/4 miles was completed in 2:16.74.

Owned by Quarter Moon Ranch and trained by Scott Powell, the reigning Horse of the Year is undefeated at Delaware in 2016 and has 4 wins in 7 starts for the year with earnings over $114,000. He is a 5-year-old bay by Burning Sand out of AK Loretta by Virgule Al Maury, bred by Jane Teutsch. He has 15 wins and 5 seconds from 22 lifetime starts in the U.S. and has amassed over $255,000 in total earnings. And with this grade 1 victory he stamps himself as a candidate for winning his second Horse of the Year title. Equi-Tech Continued.

robust. The negative effects of inbreeding become evident only if inbreeding is used without care and without judicious selection of breeding stock…And those are keys word there…judicious selection. Over the past five decades or so, with the formation of syndications, over-booking of fashionable stallions and shuttling between the Northern and Southern hemispheres, we are creating more negative effects of breeding. Additionally, continuous inbreeding provide opportunity for those recessive traits to begin to show, hence, many undesirable problems such as congenital abnormalities (defects on structure or function that is present at birth) or polygenic defects (some physical trait that occurs from the accumulation of problem genes in the selected breeding stock). Benefits of Inbreeding The benefits of inbreeding far outweigh any possible deleterious effects…according to Darwin. We know that most of the undesirable effects can be eliminated by careful selection of the breeding stock. If you wish to breed sound horses, you must have a sound mare that comes from a sound family and is by a sound broodmare sire. She then should be mated to a sound stallion who is from a sound sire line. In addition, the stallion or the mare to whom you are inbreeding to also must have been a sound animal and produced sound animals in their produce….Now that just sounds so very simple. Ok…let’s bring this on home. The general gene pool is always going to be in a natural state of flux and adaptation. Breeding trends change and as a whole we are now selecting more for either speed and less for stamina and that selection is very different than it was say fifty years ago, let alone two hundred year ago. When we start surveying our racehorse breeds, we see that we have a situation that is going on that is making our breeding world smaller when it comes to genetic diversity. We are inbreeding and linebreeding (form of inbreeding; mating two distantly related relatives) to breed horses and this is causing our genetic base to shrink. Inbreeding and linebreeding do that because they concentrate the genes of the common ancestor or ancestors and this give us less variety of genes. By losing our genetic diversity, we will eventually lose the ability to improve our horses. It is prudent that our breeders understand that there is a problem…sometimes it is hard for us to admit it but we may have inbred enough now where we are evolving into some things and some diversifications that we don’t like. We can regain our hybrid vigor by outcrossing (within a breed) or crossbreeding (breed on breed) our horses…but that is a story for another article. 24 • Arabian Finish Line • October 2016

The California Contingent The $15,000 Uptown Farm Arabian S. featured RB Madymoiselle, hot off her win in the Delaware Park Arabian Derby (G2) and narrow second to Paddys Day in the Delaware Park Arabian Classic H. (G1). But this race was at 7 furlongs over the shortened Los Alamitos oval and that favored speedy California horses like Dream Pearl and Hesster. It was Dream Pearl who took the lead for good shortly after the opening quarter mile. RB Madymoiselle, who was at the back of the pack reserved off the rail, made her bid on the outside. In an exciting stretch dual, Dream Pearl held on gamely for a head victory under jockey Hugo Herrara in a time of 1:32.38. Hesster made her bid along the rail, but flattened out to finish third, over 13 lengths ahead of Throughleap and the rest of the field.

Owned by the partnership of Burt, Call, Eaton and Soltau, Dream Pearl has now won seven of 11 career starts and three of five in 2016. Terri Eaton saddled the 5-year-old mare by Burning Sand out of Triumphs Pearl, by Seyvilla Triumph, who earned $7,500 in this race to take her career earnings to $46,440. -Stephanie Ruff Corum

Ten-year-old Ayers has been a staple on the California Fair circuit for many years. The handsome chestnut showed why during the running of the Ferndale Arabian S. over 7 furlongs. Zells Bells held the lead through much of the race, but jockey Matt Garcia shook up Ayers and he closed readily along the rail. Throughleap took the lead briefly, but Ayers continued to rally and gutted out a 1-length victory over the mare Throughleap. Raineing Sand was third in front of tired pacesetter Zells Bells. The final time was 1:38.97. Bred in Florida by Bill Waldron, Ayers is by Burning Sand out of the great producer BW Ali Catt by ZT Ali Baba. He has 2 wins from 7 starts this year. In 8 years of racing, he has 68 starts and 23 wins with over $200,000 in earnings for the owner/trainer team of Warren and Helen Shelley. -Stephanie Ruff Corum Photo courtesy of Vasser Photography. 25 • Arabian Finish Line • October 2016

Arabians Shine at the Gold Coast Article: Mr Michael Rollston – Photo Credits: Ms Nadine Frampton The sun was shining and the turf was flying when the southern raider, Reid River R-Mani (pictured left), and the magnificent stallion, Djehlbi (pictured below), emerged winners in the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival’s Wathba Stud Farm Cup races as the globetrotting series made its debut at the Gold Coast Turf Club in Australia on Saturday. The Festival staged two races in its Wathba Stud Farm Cup series and Reid River R-Mani (pictured left) won the first of the two races under Benjamin Jewitt while Djehlbi (pictured below) under Isabella Teh won the second. The first race was run over 1200 meters and spectators were treated to a beautiful ride by jockey Benjamin Jewitt who sat patiently on Reid River R-Mani before driving the Anthony Mountney-trained gelding to a well earned 3.5-length win for owner Cassie Saunders. The up and coming Aloha Natalis, a horse owned, trained and ridden by Jill Colwell, ran second and the well-tried Keisha, ridden by Isabella Teh and owned and trained by Jay Randle, ran into third place. The winning time was 1:25.67. Reputations were on the line in the second race when Isabelle Teh and Djehlbi took to the track. The pair had won the Festival’s Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup at Sportingbet Park in January 2015, and on Saturday the two were back to winning ways in the second Wathba Stud Farm Cup race. Run over 1400 metres, Teh unleashed Djehlbi at the half way mark and demolished the eight-horse field with a trademark win by 12.5 lengths from Justice For All MI ridden by Benjamin Jewitt. Aloha Desert Jewel, ridden by Jill Colwell, finished third. Djehlbi’s win was a family affair with jockey Isabella Teh being the daughter of owner/trainer Michelle Amos and his strapper was Gary Amos, Michelle’s husband. Djehlbi finished in a time of 1:36.97.

LIGHTNING STRIKES IN THE PRESIDENT OF THE UAE CUP (UK ARABIAN DERBY) Courtesy of Arabian Racing Organisation (ARO)

In a dramatic end to The President of the UAE Cup (UK Arabian Derby) Group 1 PA at Doncaster this afternoon, Lightning Bolt got up by a head to beat favourite Tayf in a photo finish for the £80,000 race. Karin Van Den Bos’s homebred made a last-minute surge under strong driving from Adrie De Vries to catch Tayf who began to idle once he struck the front. This left Khataab to fill the frame behind Tayf, confirming the form of the French equivalent. “He’s a nice horse and he kept giving me everything., commented De Vries after the race. “When Olivier passed me, I thought he had won as he passed me so easily, but of course Arabians, they never want to be in front for too long and I saw his horse trying to stop. So I gave my horse a reminder and he kept going; it was a nice surprise to win.” Van Den Bos was delighted with her colt’s performance saying, “I know I can count on Adrie, he’s a great rider. He saw an opportunity and he took it. So now I know Lightning Bolt can fight back. That will be it for this season as he is only four years old and he needs more time.” 26• Arabian Finish Line • October 2016

u.n:told stories of horse life

By Steve Heath

Marcus and Moonie No, not a children’s cartoon, but a seasoned horse racing journalist and a dual-purpose (Flat and Jumps) racehorse. A hack on a hack, as it were. A year ago, Daily Mail racing correspondent Marcus Townend, 52, had only ever sat on a pony, the first steps taken on a journey that would lead all the way to Royal Windsor racecourse and a five and a half furlong dash to raise money for charity. The charity in question being HEROS (Homing Ex-Racehorses Organisation Scheme), dedicated to re-training and re-homing ex-racehorses, and is based a few miles away from Moonie’s own stable. Progressing from ponies, the British Racing School in Newmarket gave him his first experience of the thoroughbred, after which he began riding out on a regular basis for Berkshire trainer, Geoffrey Deacon. Beginning, as Townend describes in his own column: "a learning curve so steep that I have, quite literally, fallen off at times." Moon Trip, know to his many friends as Moonie, was bred in the purple and started life as part of HH Sheikh Mohammed’s Darley operation. Regularly piloted by some of racing’s leading names including Silvestre De Sousa and Derby-winning jockeys like Keiren Fallon and Mickael Barzalona, he didn’t make the grade. Making his way to Compton (Berkshire!), he has been competing over hurdles with an occasional return to the flat. He has proved a safe conveyance for amateurs and novice jockeys alike and was the ideal partner for Townend’s racecourse debut. Royal Windsor racecourse is popular with the crowds, who can arrive via a boat on the Thames if they wish. For novice jockeys the prospect of departing via the Thames is also present, should the brakes fail when pulling up. The organisers had thoughtfully moved the finish line back to allow more time to stop, no doubt to everyone’s relief, not least the resident swans. Following a course walk with his fellow competitors, during which he was given pointers by his trainer and John Reid (Derby winning jockey turned coach), it became clear that Townend was one of the least experience riders. In addition, Moonie was going to find the trip on the short side. His minimum distance was a mile and a half. He would be just warming up, when the others were pulling up. Undaunted, having lost the best part of 36 lb and a regular at the gym and on Deacon’s equicizer, Townend endured the early evening programme of races. The charity race was last, scheduled for 7:50 pm and the light was beginning to fade as they made their way to the start. Getting to post intact, when the flag dropped it all happened so quickly that Townend can barely recall it, however, the behind-the-scenes insight into a sport that he has followed for years will clearly live long in the memory. Though finishing last, he dutifully returned to the press room to file his copy for the Sunday feature to be run on his experience, ending his column with the following: ‘"And, above all, I appreciate the work of those who labour behind the scenes every day, often having to handle tricky, difficult mounts as routine daily occupation. Was it worth it? Hell, yes. Would I do it again? Possibly. Probably..." So far, Townend has raised over $18,000 and has since been made a patron of the charity. www.heroscharity.org - Text and photos by Debbie Burt 36 • Arabian Finish Line • October 2016
