Abhaa Arabians of Kuwait, owned and loved by Mr. Ahmad Abdulaziz Al Babtain, is one of the premier modern-day breeding programs in the world today. In a short space of time, he has built up a collection of stunning horses that all carry the Abhaa Arabians name with pride. Whether they are shown in Kuwait or in Europe, they make both their stud’s and their owner’s name proud. I like to refer to Mr. Ahmad Abdulaziz Al Babtain’s collection as a garden consisting of unique, extravagant and one of a kind flowers. Each is special in their own right, but together they form a picture that is absolutely breath taking. A picture that leaves you in awe, where unfiltered, authentic beauty is evident and where each flower uncontrollably blossoms and flourishes where they are placed. Some of the whimsical flowers that call Abhaa Arabians home include international champions Basma Del Palazzotto, D Kaheel, AB Muhra, Fuerte, Priscilla OS, AB Faridah, Asinaat SA and Dalal Zamani just to name a few. No matter the shade or the composition, each of the phenomenal flowers have been blossoming in the show ring and their scents as well as their beauty are known far and wide. A new flower finds herself a part of this garden; she is an enigmatic and whimsical flower. She is snow white and she is as graceful as she is powerful. She is loved and adored by millions and is held in high esteem around the world. She is a flower that effortlessly earns a twenty in a show arena and is draped in championship honours on every occasion. This flower’s name is Baviera HVP (Marwan Al Shaqab x HB Bessolea). Baviera HVP was bred by Nelson de Oliviera Prata Pinto Moreira, Brazil, is currently owned by Aria Prestige Holdings LLC and is on lease to Mr. Ahmad Abdulaziz Al Babtain of Abhaa Arabians, Kuwait. Whether you have seen her in the show ring, at a presentation, in her stable or in a video/photo, Baviera HVP is considered a vision of perfection. Her parents have blessed her with the very best – from her sire she inherited style, a near perfect body and a captivating presence, while her dam has blessed her with authentic type, commanding attitude, powerful movement and of course, her snow-white exterior. Whether she is standing out in a field of red poppies with the melodious sound of the saxophone playing in the background or whether she is giving it her all in a show arena with hundreds of people chanting her name, Baviera HVP makes it clear that she is the one in charge and that all eyes should be on her. This type of perfection doesn’t happen just by chance, it is due to the union of superior genetics and sheer greatness. The cross that brought Baviera HVP to life has been giving rise to superstars from the very beginning; it is tried and tested and has never failed us yet. Baviera HVP is sired by the one and only, the living legend, a stallion many consider a living, breathing form of perfection – Marwan Al Shaqab (Gazal Al Shaqab x Little Liza Fame). Marwan Al Shaqab has reigned supreme as a global leading sire and an undisputed king of the ring for almost two decades now. What Marwan Al Shaqab has achieved in both the show ring and the breeding barn in his lifetime will be very hard to repeat; and to be one of his premier daughters, instantly puts you in a class that is above the rest. Marwan Al Shaqab is sired by another living legend and sire extraordinaiAHM | 3

re, Salon du Cheval World Champion Stallion and United States Reserve Champion Stallion, Gazal Al Shaqab (Anaza El Farid x Kajora). Gazal Al Shaqab is sired by the Straight Egyptian, Anaza El Farid, who himself is a U.S. Egyptian Event Champion Stallion, and he is out of the Polish beauty, Kajora, a United States National Champion Mare. Both Anaza El Farid and Kajora adorn this pedigree with the blood of United States National Champions Ruminaja Ali and Kaborr as well as the aristocracy of broodmatrons Bint Deena and Ellora. Marwan Al Shaqab’s dam, Little Liza Fame’s (Fame VF x Katazha) pedigree is laced with greatness. Her sire, Fame VF, was a United States National Champion Stallion and together with his sire, Bey Shah, they phenotypically and AHM | 4

genotypically changed the entire Arabian industry. It is Marwan Al Shaqab that blessed Baviera HVP with that enthralling, serpent-like neck, refined muzzle and a stand up that is so close to perfection, that she can’t help but score twenties wherever she may find herself. Baviera HVP’s dam, HB Bessolea (Besson Carol x Credit To Society) was one of the most captivating and an uber successful broodmares that HB Arabians ever bred. HB Bessolea had a beautiful head that was adorned with huge, soul rattling eyes and overall, she was the definition of a breeder’s dream. Her sire, Besson Carol (Parys El Jamaal x Classic Krystall) was an exceptional stallion and an even better producer. He brings with him the blood of United States Reserve National Champions Parys El Jamaal and Gdansk

as well as the immortals, Ali Jamaal and Aladdinn. HB Bessolea’s dam, Credit To Society (Enchanter Magic FHP x JA High Society) adds so much greatness to this pedigree. HB Bessolea was shown multiple times and she went on to earn Regional Champion and Scottsdale Top Ten honours, but what she achieved in the show ring is nothing compared to the dynasty she gave life to in the breeding barn. The cross between Marwan Al Shaqab and HB Bessolea is praised among breeders, trainers, handlers and judges in the industry; one could say that theirs was a match made in heaven. Together they gave rise to a superior family of siblings that dominated every show arena they stepped their hooves in. Three times Mediterranean and Arab Countries Arabian Horse Championships Champion Stallion, two ti-

mes Salon du Cheval World Champion and two times All Nations Cup Champion Stallion are just a few of the titles on the outrageously long list held by Baanderos. Baanderos is one of the most highly decorated show stallions in the world today and he is by far, the most successful horse to come from this majestic cross. A full brother, Baahir El Marwan, was named Scottsdale Champion Senior Stallion, Scottsdale Supreme Champion Horse and United States National Champion Senior Stallion all in the same year. A daughter from this cross by the name of Bessolina El Marwan is currently the reigning Scottsdale International Gold Champion Senior Mare. This list could go on forever, but what I will continue with is the success that Baviera HVP has garnered. AHM | 5

Just like her superstar siblings, Baviera HVP gained stardom very early in life and it was evident that she was going to be considered a queen of the ring. Whenever she enters an arena,

you can’t help but stop dead in your tracks and stare at this heavenly angel. You feel her powerful trot vibrate on your chest, your heart beats faster and your eyes are fixed. With her snort and blow attitude, charismatic movement and her overall drop-dead gorgeous appearance, Baviera HVP has found herself in the winner’s circle on every occasion. The Brazilian Nationals is one of the highlights in the Arabian Horse show calendar; breeders, trainers and judges flock to Sao Paulo to see the new horses being shown – the horses they see on videos and photos on social media and just need to get a glimpse of the real thing. It was at the 2016 Brazilian Nationals that Baviera HVP made her name known. She looked every so graceful as she entered the ring and the photos and videos taken at the show all went viral. She was the new talk of the town, a new sensation. Baviera HVP was named Champion Junior Mare at the show and it was only the first of many to come. Baviera HVP returned to the Brazilian Nationals in 2017 and all eyes were on her. She knew that she could effortlessly be a twice consecutive National Champion but there were a few doubts in the air. She cleared those doubts and put herself on the map when she was crowned 2017 Brazilian National Champion Senior Mare. She wore those orange roses with pride, and it was the perfect adornment to her jaw-dropping stand up. This win put her on the radar, she was now in demand. It was Jeff Sloan at Aria

Arabians who made the purchase and was the lucky owner of this rare jewel. He knew that she had so much to offer to his program and the potential she had to dominate in the United States and she certainly did not disappoint. Baviera HVP blossomed in the United States from the word go. With her main man, Andrew Sellman at her side, they took on all the major shows in the U.S. in 2018. They started in Scottsdale, where Baviera HVP was named 2018 Scottsdale Open Reserve Champion Senior Mare. After that, they set their eyes on the title of Gold Champion Senior Mare at the Las Vegas Breeders World Cup. Baviera HVP once again brought her A-game to the show, she was awarded three twenties and on championship day, she came out victorious. She was crowned 2018 Las Vegas World Cup Gold Champion Senior Mare. The last step in the United States tour was at the coveted United States Nationals, they could taste the victory, and everyone was imagining those tri-colour roses draped across her shoulders. At the end of the day, Baviera HVP and Andrew Sellman ran their victory lap with pride after being named 2018 Unanimous United Stated National Champion Senior Mare. Ahmad Abdulaziz Al Babtain of Abhaa Arabians is a connoisseur when it comes to all things perfect and when he saw Baviera HVP, he knew that he had to have her under his banner. The grace, beauty, femininity and authenticity that she possessed are characteristics common among his herd of mares and fillies and

he knew that she would be a perfect fit as well as the perfect candidate to campaign throughout Europe. Once the lease

was signed, she made her way to Italy where she would reside and be trained and shown by professional horseman and lover of the Arabian horse, Paolo Capecci. Baviera HVP made her European debut on the sun kissed sands in the French Riviera at the Mediterranean and Arab Countries Arabian Horse Championships. Paolo showed her to perfection; Baviera HVP floated through those gates and the crowds went wild. This superstar was shown in all her glory and the results proved it. She was awarded five twenties and the first place in the Four – Six Year Old Mare Class with a score of 92.88. With her tail over her back and her head held high, she fought for her place amongst the toughest competition on championship day. She was named Silver Champion Senior Mare and both her supporters and the teams at Abhaa Arabians and Capecci Training Centre were elated.

What Baviera HVP achieved in Menton is just a small taste of what awaits. With Paolo Capecci at her side and the full support and love of the Abhaa Arabians, Capecci Training Centre, Sahara Scottsdale and Aria Arabians teams behind her, Baviera HVP is bound to blossom on European soil. She is in full bloom and is ready to take centre stage at the prestigious All Nations Cup and the crown jewel, the Salon du Cheval World Championships in Paris this year. Not only will she dazzle crowds and judges, but she will extend her international fan base and take her name and the Abhaa Arabians name to the very next level. Watch out world, Baviera HVP is in full bloom and you all are going to know about it. Abhaa Arabians has also leased another extraordinary horse by the name of Sultan Al Zobara. Sultan Al Zobara was bred by Abdullah Al Misnad of Qatar and the team at Abhaa Arabians

are absolutely excited to have him in their garden this year. For the very first time, Sultan Al Zobara is available to the public. Mr. Gianpaolo Gubbiotti also known as Woody is currently handling all the promotion regarding Sultan Al Zobara and we have already seen the success they have achieved. Sultan Al Zobara was shown under the Abhaa Arabians name for the first time at the Mediterranean and Arab Countries Arabian Horse Championships. Just like he did with Baviera HVP, Paolo Capecci showed Sultan Al Zobara with everything he had; they both gave their all and even though they were placed second in their class, Sultan Al Zobara was awarded the Bronze Champion Senior Stallion at the show. Sultan Al Zobara is currently standing at Capecci Training AHM | 8

Center in Italy and Paolo Capecci and his wife Susy Gruschler couldn’t be happier; they are excited to represent such an esteemed and illustrious horse and for the possibilities that Sultan Al Zobara brings with him. They know that Sultan Al Zobara is capable of much more and they are ready to take on the next challenge. The royal king, Sultan Al Zobara might not have started his new chapter in the ways we had hoped for, but we can be sure that he will be coming back with a bang. So get ready Arabian industry, the crowds will soon start gathering, be sure to make way, a royal story is about to unfold at the 2019 All Nations Cup in Aachen.

END OF THE YEAR EDITORIAL NOVEMBER 2019 The end of the year is always a time for reflection on both the past and the future. It does not seem so long ago that we wrote our first editorial of Arabian Horse Magazine but it has been almost nine years. When the Magazine switched to the English language five years ago, information and business relations were not as ‘international’ as it is today and the new AHM Team took on the responsibility in hope and in high expectation. Over the years, we have noticed that the Magazine community in Europe, in the Middle East as well as in the United States and South American regions —- breeders, owners, judges, handlers, trainers, veterinarians, equine artists and everyone else involved with the Arabian Horse --- rally round and has enabled Arabian Horse Magazine to gain the exposure of this day. More important has been the support from those people who took out subscriptions; famous breeding programs and Arabian horses’ owners around the world that advertise with us on a regular basis, and all Sponsors of the various morphology competitions we are recurrently asked to cooperate with. While expressing our gratitude to everyone, we do not hesitate to say that such support needs to continue if the Magazine is to thrive. Since 2014 the Magazine has developed in a number of ways. The elegant format and high quality printing of material is the most obvious improvement and the contents have been extended to include regular features on horses and their owners, cultural and artistic works among other things. In addition, Arabian Horse Magazine, has become more than just the printed page, as the website has enabled us to do many other things. As well as reflecting the printed edition, the website has other content and now readers can subscribe to a digital version of the Magazine, which is proving popular. We are providing more opportunities for people to participate in Arabian Horse Magazine. For example, through our short-story competitions we are reaching out to established

clients. Although only in its 5th year, our contribution to beauty competitions has been a great success and champion horses are announced in each issue. As well as all that, the Magazine has become more than the sum of its parts. One pleasant discovery we have made is how much a part of the Magazine is of the book breeding community throughout the world with lots of people feeling a sense of ownership in it. From its foundation by Gianluca Martino, Arabian Horse Magazine has been central to the industry, to show and the selling scene, but today it is also the nexus where writers, businessmen, event organizers and readers of Arabian Horses books can connect in a unique way. We are an echo chamber reflecting all aspects of the Arabian Horse enabling communication throughout the entire segment. We provide not only an independent voice giving an honest assessment of today’s industry trend but also information and support to all those concerned with Arabian Horses in whatever capacity. In this sense, Arabian Horse Magazine has grown beyond its origins. We want to thank every single reader. Thanks to those who read about us every day on their tablets. Thanks to those who follow us on the web and via social networks. Thanks to those who are proud of ‘caring’ for the Arabian horse. In conclusion, according to tradition, we on the AHM Team Gianluca Martino, Noemie Zeller, Nazario Bizzoco, Debora Martino, Sonja Smaldone, all outside collaborators, journalists and photographers – would like to extend our best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year 2020 to all our readers (and you are so many!). We do thank you for your great support and constant participation. We feel honored to take on that responsibility and feel that the longevity of the Magazine should be celebrated in style with the beautiful Paris issue 2019. We have a number of new events and activities planned and will be announcing these in the New Year. We hope also to extend the range of our activities beginning next year, not just in what we offer our readers but also in being more of a presence by working with and participating in Arabian Horses Shows around the globe.

e have all heard the famous idiom, “a feather in your cap.” Many use it when they accomplish something great or achieve a new height of success. According to multiple sources, this idiom has been around since the 1700s and is believed to have derived from the general custom of a warrior adding a new feather to their head-gear for every enemy slain, or in other cases from the custom of establishing the success of a hunter as being the first to bag a game bird. This phrase is also used to describe an honour of which you can be proud of. When Angelo Scipioni first laid eyes on SA Faez Simbad, he knew that he would earn him a feather in the Scipioni Arabians’ cap. SA Faez Simbad (Ajman Moniscione x Altam Nur Simbad HEC) is an extraordinary, young stallion that taken Europe by storm. He is bred, proudly owned and loved by Angelo Scipioni of Scipioni Arabians in Italy. SA Faez Simbad oozes type, his perfectly tipped ears and large nostrils all add to a picture perfect head, his neck like a snake and his body correct. He moves with power and might floating across the paddock or the show ring. SA Faez Simbad is phenotypic masterpiece with multiple fe-

athers in his cap. The amount of success he has achieved in the breeding barns and show rings have been resounding. With foals garnering titles left right and centre, SA Faez Simbad is adding a new feather to his cap almost daily. In order to appreciate this success, one first needs to appreciate the legacy that brought forth SA Faez Simbad. A glorious combination of Spanish, Russian, Polish and Crabbet blood are found in SA Faez Simbad’s pedigree and it is these prized genetics that have played such a pivotal role in making him the stallion he is today. He is sired by the uber-exotic, champion-producing stallion, Ajman Moniscione (WH Justice x Anthea Moniscione). While it is important to note that Ajman Moniscione was named Reserve Champion at the European Championships and All Nations Cup, his greatest accolades in life are found in the countless number of premier offspring he has around the world.

ported by Scipioni Arabians from Brazil to Italy a few years ago. She was chosen for her unique pedigree, captivating beauty and correctness, all of which gave her the potential to become a fantastic broodmare. Her pedigree is predominantly Russian and Crabbet and it is the athleticism that these lines are revered for that she has been blessed with. United States National Champion Marsianin, Brazilian Reserve National Champion Cobrah and Broodmare sire extraordinaire RSD Dark Victory are all found in Altam Nur Simbad’s pedigree and have in turn lent their greatness to SA Faez Simbad. It is however, the whopping seven crosses to the legendary stallion Bask, that truly makes Altam Nur Simbad stand out and such a vital asset to SA Faez Simbad. With such great and impactful blood coursing through his veins, SA Faez Simbad was bound to become a legend in all realms of his life. Just

International champions Alma Al Tiglio, Elle Flamenca, Kanz Albidayer and Noft Al Nayfat have all added to the greatness of Ajman Moniscione, and so has SA Faez Simbad. It is quite evident that SA Faez Simbad inherited his father’s jaw dropping good looks and charismatic attitude, but he has also been one of his father’s most successful sons to date. A double cross to the Russian powerhouse Padron and a sire line that includes the leading sire father-son duo, Padrons Psyche and Magnum Psyche, puts SA Faez Simbad in a class of his own. And what sets him further apart is his dam’s uncommon yet highly relevant pedigree. SA Faez Simbad’s dam, Altam Nur Simbad HEC (Mars Simbad HEC x Altam Numa Alysh), was im-

like his ancestors before him, SA Faez Simbad has found himself earning multiple twenties and draped in gold in multiple show rings. At the 2017 Milan International Show with Giacomo Capacci at the lead, SA Faez Simbad won his class and was named Unanimous Gold Champion Senior Stallion. Later that same year at the prestigious Italian National Show, SA Faez Simbad earned himself five twenties of which one was awarded for Body &Topline; he was later crowned 2017 Italian National Gold Champion Stallion, a feather he so proudly wears in his cap. Another, or should I say, the multiple other feathers that SA Faez Simbad has in his cap are his amazing, award-winning foals. SA Faez Simbad has made many of his breeder’s

Italy was SA Faez Simbad. I was very happy with the outcome and I think that the cross worked very well. When he started maturing, I was patiently waiting for him to become a stallion to be able to give him the opportunity to breed my mares. As soon as he was of breeding age, I selected a few mares from different bloodlines and one year later the first babies born. They were looking so beautiful and I was incredible happy,” says owner Angelo Scipioni. Having blessed each and every one of his foals with his stunning type, exotic beauty and enthralling presence, SA Faez Simbad has effortlessly propelled them into the winner’s circle and in turn propelled

Michaelangelo Regalis (x Nashira By Chawy NA) himself into the realm of legendary sires. Two of SA Faez Simbad’s most successful foals to

date (full siblings to be exact) were born at Regalis Arabian Horse Stud in Italy. Nemesis Regalis (x Nashira By Chawy NA) is one of the most exotic fillies to be alive today. She is owned by Hanaya Stud and has a slew of titles, some of which include: Gold Champion Yearling Filly at the Italian Nationals and Gold Champion Junior Filly at the Elran Cup and Wels International Shows. Michaelangelo Regalis (x Nashira By Chawy NA) is a phenomenal young colt who has been setting the 2019 show scene on fire. In this year alone, he has been named Gold Champion Junior Colt at the Chantilly AHO Breeders Championships, Italian Nationals and the

The fouryear-old stallion, SA Zayd (x SA Zein) was named Gold Champion Stallion at the Montefalco Breeders Championships while the two-year-old filly, SA Janira (x SA Falco (x SA Morgana) SA Princesa Pin), was named Gold AHM | 78

SA Falco (x SA Morgana), a beautiful bay colt owned by Vela Lyan, was named Gold Champion Junior Colt at the Forli International and Galician International Shows. With such a phenomenal repertoire behind his name, one can only expect so much more from the glorious, young legend known as SA Faez Simbad. Not only has he surpassed the expectations of his owner and many breeders, but he has given the world an inkling as to what he can do if given the opportunity. SA Faez Simbad is poised and ready to add many more feathers in his already full cap, feathers from breeding establishments and show rings around the world. A GOOD WINE TAKES TIME BY NAKASHEN VALAITHAM

It was while sipping a delectable glass of wine at Oenotri, an Italian restaurant in the picturesque Napa Valley of California, that long-time breeder and lover of the Arabian horse, Philip Del Pozzo, realised what he was going to name his superstar colt at home. He knew that this colt was special from the very beginning; he was everything he had dreamed of and his name needed to say that loud and clear. With glass in hand, his colt’s potential in mind and a passion burning in his heart, Philip made the decision to name his young star, Enotri EEA.

What many don’t know is that a small part of Southern Italy was once referred to as Oenotria and it was a territory rich in vineyards and very famous for the extravagant and well-made wines that were made by the area’s inhabitants. And why this is relevant is because Enotri EEA has been growing and maturing like the perfect bottle of wine. Not only has he increased in quality (and value of course), but he has heightened in beauty and the world now has his name on their lips. And they ask but one question: When is the big reveal? Before the above-mentioned question is answered, let’s

AHM | 99

delve back into where Entori EEA stems from and how he came to life. Entori EEA was bred by Philip Del Pozzo and Brent Stone of Enzo Worldwide and Albert Sorocca of Equus Arabians. Both Enzo Worldwide and Equus Arabians are world-renowned, top-tier breeding establishments that have left their marks in the industry, and what solidifies their partnership in Entori EEA is a long-time friendship that was founded on the love of the Arabian breed. Enotri EEA was born in 2013 and the Enotri EEA Partnership was founded. From the time he stepped foot on this earth, all

three partners knew that they had been blessed with something very special Everything that Enotri EEA (Shanghai EA x Enjoi E) is today is all thanks to the wonderful amalgamation of Spanish, Polish, Russian and straight Egyptian blood found in his star-studded pedigree. Enotri EEA’s pedigree is influenced by yesteryear legends and today’s show ring superstars, and together they have given him genotypic and phenotypic profiles that are second to none. Enotri EEA is sired by the reigning Mediterranean and Arab Countries Arabian Horse Championship Gold Champion Stallion, Shanghai EA (WH Justice x Salymah EA). The exotic, snow-white

Shanghai EA has been winning hearts and titles around the globe and some of his other titles include All Nations Cup Gold Champion Stallion, Abu Dhabi International Gold Champion Stallion, Dubai International Gold Champion Stallion and Salon du Cheval Silver World Champion Colt, to name a few. Shanghai EA has given Enotri EEA his award winning, sculpture-inspiring, 20-scoring (and the list of adjectives can go on) type that can be seen from miles away. Along with the immense type, Enotri EEA has inherited bucket loads of charisma and tonnes of attitude, the kind that stops you dead in your tracks, leaves your jaw hanging to the ground and the hairs on the back of your neck standing up. Shanghai EA is sired by a stallion aptly dubbed “The Champion Maker” and we all know his name, WH Justice (Magnum Psyche x Vona Sher-Renea). WH Justice’ harem of champions spans the entire globe and his show ring career has been nothing less than amazing. All Nations Cup Gold Champion Stallion and Las Vegas Arabian Breeders World Cup Silver Champion Stallion are just two magnanimous achievements that WH Justice has achieved. WH Justice brings with him the blood of the living legend and Leading Sire of Champions around the world, Magnum Psyche (Padrons Psyche x A Fancy Miracle) as well as the international icon, El Shaklan (Shaker El Masri x Estopa). Shanghai EA’s dam, Salymah EA (Khidar x Libanon Azadika), has been one of Philip Del Pozzo’s favourites horses ever since he laid eyes on her when she was weanling. With regular visits to Albert’s beautiful farm in Spain, Philip watched Salymah EA mature into the alabaster angel she is today and when Shanghai EA was born, Philip knew that through her son, he was going to incorporate the blood of his favourite mare in his breeding program. Salymah EA is sired by Salon Du Cheval World Champion Stallion and sire of significance, Khidar (Ansata Sinan x Elizja) and through her pedigree, we find four crosses to the iconic century-mare, Estopa and with WH Justice adding one more cross to Estopa, Enotri EEA has been blessed with a staggering total of five crosses to one of the greatest mares that has ever graced the face of Arabian breed. If that wasn’t enough, Salymah EA’s tail female line which traces back to Baraka, which is the same tail female line of breed icons Saskia RJ, FM Gloriaa, Bess Fa’izah and Athenaa. Enotri EEA’s dam, Enjoi E (Enzo x Oso Padova), was a stunning chestnut mare that in her prime, was a Regional Champion in the U.S. She was sired by the late but forever great United States National Champion Stallion and Las Vegas Breeders World Cup Champion Stallion, Enzo (Padrons Psyche x RD Bey Shahmpane). Enzo was the heart and soul of Enzo Worldwide and Enotri EEA is living proof that his legacy will live on forever. Enzo brings a second cross to Padrons Psyche (Padron x Kilika) to this pedigree. This crimson stallion is another Leading Sire of Champions around the globe and a favourite to breeders, enthusiasts and judges across the globe. And of course, through Enzo’s dam, RD Bey Shahmpane (Bey Shah x Bey Shahdar), we find not one, but two crosses to the United States

AHM | 103

Reserve Champion Stallion and a horse considered to have changed the face of the breed, Bey Shah. Enjoi E’s dam, Oso Padova (Gwizd x Premiaa), was a fabulous Polish mare with all the characteristics the Polish horses are loved and adored for. Her pedigree is influenced by some of the greatest Polish horses that ever lived, some of which include, Swedish National Champion and sire of two-times World Champion Piruet, Probat, United States Triple Crown Champion Strike, Janow Podlaski Chief Sire and sire of ten Polish National Champions Bandos and United States National Champion Aladdinn, to name just a few. What’s interesting about Enjoi E is that before she was sold, both Philip and Brent decided to take one last embryo from her. The resulting foal was Enotri EEA

AHM | 104

and he was Enjoi E’s last foal as she passed on soon after she was sold. I suppose this next sentence is bittersweet, but one could say that Enjoi E left her best for last and we are all truly grateful to her for that. For a wine to get a good rating from the strictest sommeliers and international critics, it needs to be made with the finest ingredients in the world. Grapes grown in the perfect environment and picked just at the right time are essential to bringing us that perfect complimentary sip with our meals. And we all know that a good wine takes time not only to be made, but to mature into a rich dark red with a flavour profile second to none; time to mature and ferment is required. In the same way, Enotri EEA has been blessed with some of the best blood and genetics in our industry and this

has been recognized by the world. While everyone knew that Enotri EEA was special, they knew that the world wanted to see him in a show ring. The partnership decided to send him to Michael Byatt Arabians in preparation for the 2016 Scottsdale International Show. Michael Byatt showed Enotri EEA to perfection and in a matter of minutes, they built up a fanbase and garnered interest from breeders near and far. Enotri EEA was named Scottsdale International Reserve Champion Three Year Old Colt and he received the second highest score in his entire division. It was after this unveiling that international interest soon began to stream in. While Sheikh Hamad Bin Ali Al Thani, manager of Al Shaqab Stud and Al Rayyan Stud in Qatar, was visiting Michael Byatt Arabians, he hap-

pened to see Enotri EEA and he inquired on leasing the stallion for Al Shaqab. He believed that Enotri EEA possessed something unique and that he would complement the ultra-gorgeous Marwan Al Shaqab, Gazal Al Shaqab and many other offspring at the stud. Enotri EEA made his way to Qatar for the 2018/19 breeding season and while at the stud, he bred a total of 42 mares and Al Shaqab indeed pleased with the results. It is very important to mention that Enotri EEA was the first stallion, bred in the United States, to have been leased by the stud and to share stalls with the other seven World Champion stallions that call Al Shaqab home. This is probably one of the highest honours a stallion can earn in his lifetime, and to earn that as a three year old is usually unheard of. Even though they

have not been revealed yet, some of the stunning foals at Al Shaqab include Falak Al Shaqab (ex JJ Farabella), Shomileh Al Shaqab (ex JJ Domyla), Anhar Al Shaqab (ex Adhaba Al Shaqab) and Kays Al Shaqab (ex Hayam Al Shaqab). Joe and Kim Orr of Rose City Arabians fell head over heels when they saw Enotri EEA as a colt and they knew that they had to become a part of the Enotri EEA Partnership. “When we first saw Enotri EEA at Enzo Worldwide he was only three years old. Kim and I got the chills and immediately asked if we could be a part of his journey! We called Michael Byatt and Michael told us to jump on as fast as we could because Enotri EEA will be a very important sire!” – Joe Orr The founding partners were excited to have new members on board and Joe and Kim were ecstatic to start breeding with Enotri EEA. It was Joe and Kim that bred the second Enotri EEA foal and from the day she born, they knew that Enotri EEA had the potential to

ENOTRI EEA

join the league of the legendary sires found in his pedigree. His second foal was a gloriously pretty filly that was named Stella Rosa RC. She is a mesmerizing filly that like her sire, captivates you from the moment you lay eyes on her. She is out of Estella Di Enzo (Enzo x Star Chance SA) and she made her debut at the 2018 Scottsdale International Show where she earned herself a Top Ten. What’s wonderful about this filly is that her pedigree boasts two crosses to the famed Enzo; it is line breeding we haven’t really seen in our industry and it brings a fresh perspective to what we are used to seeing. “Enotri’s foals are gorgeous, typey, with stretch and great bodies! We are grateful that Philip and Brent and Albert of Equus Arabians welcomed us as partners.” Joe Orr. While I mentioned his second foal, his very first foal was born at Enzo Worldwide and she is a stunner. Her dam, Monica PGA (Monogramm x Extra Special), is one of the foundation mares at Enzo Worldwide. Her

son, Edisson, was the youngest stallion to ever be named Scottsdale International Gold Champion Stallion and was already leased by Fontanella Magic Arabians in Italy and is currently on lease to Danubius Arabians in Romania. Enotri EEA and Monica PGA have brought a new star to life and Philip Del Pozzo believes that her time is coming soon. After Enotri EEa’s lease at Al Shaqab, it was time for him to return home to Enzo Worldwide. However, before returning home, Enrico Mearelli of Elegantica Training Centre enquired whether or not he could stand at stud at his training centre to be available to breeders in Europe. Enrico adds: “On a visit to Enzo Worldwide in the U.S.A., I saw a few of Enotri EEA’s first foals and I was very impressed by them.” The Enotri EEA Partnership knew that it was time for Enotri EEA to make his mark in the world and having him stand at Elegantica Training Centre would be the first step in doing just that. It was agreed upon and from Qatar, Enotri EEA made his way to the beautiful country of Italy. “Once we knew Enotri EEA would come to stand at our training centre here in Italy, I got very excited. Enotri EEA finally arrived and I was so impressed by him; he is just such an amazing horse. I am sure he will make his mark on our breeding history.” – Enrico Mearelli. From the United States of America to Qatar and now to Italy, Enotri EEA is truly shaping up to be a global ambassador, not just for himself but for the Arabian breed as a whole. And now, at the young age of six, Enotri EEA is ready to take centre stage once again. Like a good bottle of Domaine Leroy Richebourg Grand Cru Pinor Noir, Enotri EEA has matured into an alabaster beauty; poised and ready to be the number one wherever he may find himself. He has dried out and his type has increased substantially; he is now almost snow white and the beauty, nobility and character that come with the transition from colt to stallion is highly evident. Like a good wine, Enotri EEA has taken his time to mature and he is now ready to be campaigned around Europe with Enrico Mearelli at the lead. So, going back to the opening question: When is the big reveal? Well the answer is simple. All good wines take time and the Enotri EEA bottle is almost ready to be opened. Be ready, make sure your glass is empty, cause once it is opened, it will flow like a fountain and you will be intoxicated with everything that is Enotri EEA.

INTERVIEWED BY SONJA SMALDONE

Judging Arabian horses’ conformation takes practice, but anyone who has spent time around these beautiful creatures can learn to do it. Judges usually look for a combination of balance, structure, muscling, gait, and breed-specific features. For the 2019 Paris issue, I had the chance to interview Mr. Hassan Abdulla Al Mannai from Qatar. He was pleased to walk me through the main aspects of his professional experience in judging Arabian horses. Hello, Mr. Hassan. Just to set the scene with our readers, give us some background to you, to your family and education please. I am currently living in my home country in Qatar with my family. I am blessed to have two young boys. I completed my high school in Qatar and, in 2008, I started my higher eduction in the UK. Between 2009 to 2017, I successfully achieved my BSc in Business Management and MBA in Business Administration at two University locations in the UK, I have also studied many other courses to build my skills and knowledge including Project Management, Human Resource Management and Credit Risk. When did you start getting interested in the purebred Arabian horse? My first contact with the Arabian horse was at the young age of 3 years old, as a child I enjoyed horse riding with my father and family. Then, as I kept going horseback riding into my early adulthood my interest in the Arabian horse continued as did my passion for them. In 2014 I founded Al Reeh Stud to breed high quality Arabians. When did you become a judge? What specific preparation did you get? In 2017 I successfully became the representative for Qatar as a National Show Judge for National and International competitions covering Qatar, Denmark, Italy, Russia, Iran and Poland. My preparation was many years of research and studying, I attended shows worldwide to gain experience and knowledge as well as networking with professionals and well experienced judges to achieve a better understanding.

Judging Arabian Horse Show in Qatar

What do you feel has been your most rewarding experience as a judge? Being able to work in an industry I enjoy and makes me happy, being able to share my knowledge is also very rewarding. What horse or horses have you judged that have left the greatest impression on you? As a judge, I wouldn’t know which horse I would be judging next in the show ring, so in general I have had many horses that have made an impression on me. However, I’ve never loved horses more than the horses I have bred myself as I consider them very special.

AHM | 139

What are, in your opinion, the strengths of the breed and how do you tackle the concepts of ‘beauty’ and ‘functional correctness’? From a personal perspective, the horses should be correct which means a strong body, strong legs to be more functional. However, ‘type’ is always important for the Arabian horse, so the challenge is to breed a high type horse with a correct conformation. Which particular skills are necessary to become an accountable judge? Dedication and passion, knowing the breed is a benefit and basic horse handling skills are required. Equine professionals should have a basic knowledge of equine anatomy and what a well-conformed horse should look like. You also need to be confident enough to give a correct scoring without any hesitation or indecisiveness.

AHM | 140

At least in Europe their have been many complaints about trainers abusing horses. Some of them have also been punished for drugging a horse or for cosmetic alterations on necks, in addition to eye tattooing. Do you feel these are isolated incidents or do you feel they may be more widespread? I strongly feel this is a widespread issue that must be recognised and tackled for the welfare of the horses. ECAHO should always take a very strict decision and action in any of these cases, assisting in decipher these issues.

Do you think that the Arabian World has been a bit in a downtrend lately? We have seen decreasing participation at Class “A shows, decreased breedings, decreased transfers and record low prices for sales. Many blame the decline on politics and the cost of showing. What are your feelings? In my opinion there is no downtrend as such, however a little decrease in participants for the higher shows due to an

increase in more participants in the smaller shows in order to qualify. We cannot deny a decrease in the sales of the Arabian horse and we noticed this in many auctions held recently. I think the decrease came from the increase of supply in the Arabian breed, one of the reasons for example is using embryo transfer.

As I am passionate about the Arabian horse breed and now an ECAHO member, I would like to bring more interest in the Arabian horse and to attract more observers into the Arabian horse industry as well as encourage more shows worldwide. I wish to make positive changes that benefit the welfare of the Arabian horse breed.

Do you feel with the politics and the high cost of showing in rated shows, that many Arabian owners should consider Open Shows? Do you see this as a viable alternative to promoting the versatility of the breed? I wouldn’t suggest that politics would be the correct word to use while we have an organisation called ECAHO, ensuring there are policies and procedures being followed. However, maybe, considering a Liberty Class in some shows could reduce the cost of showing and trainers.

Do you feel like leaving a message to the readers of this interview or to those who are willing to get to know you better? Let’s work together to improve the welfare of the Arabian horse breed without any personal interest and introduce these amazing Arabian horses to everyone around the world.

If you were empowered to effect change in the Arabian World, how would you go about it?

AHM | 144

Mr. Hassan, thank you very much. It was an honor to interview you. May the Arabian horse cast a spell on us and keep us together forever and ever.

T

owards the end of September 2019 Arabian Horse Magazine flew off to the imperial city of Aachen to participate in the ‘All Nations Cup’, for sure one of the most glamorous Arabian Horse shows in Europe. We could not imagine Aachen without the All Nations Cup as a regularly established event. Our wonderful Arabian horses, the luxurious structure of the Albert-Vahle-Halle, the impeccable organization of Mr. Wolfgang Eberhardt from VZAP (the German Association of the Arabian Horse) make this beautiful venue possible year after year. The judges officiating at the 37th edition All Nations Cup included: Mrs. Marianne Tengstedt (Denmark); Dr. Gianmarco Aragno (Italy); Mr. Klaus G. Beste (Kuwait); Mr. Lucas Gozdzialski (Poland); Mr. William Oppen (Argentina); Mr. George Zbyszewski (United States) and Dr. Marek Trela (Poland). The Disciplinary Committee was composed by: Mr. Line Brunsgaard (Denmark); Dr. Laura Mascagna (Italy); Dr. Helmut Feigl (Germany); Mr. Peter Hegemann (Germany) and Dr. Thomas Stohler (Switzerland). In his role of Ringmaster: Mr. Mohammed Hamad from Egypt. The music was excellently mixed by Mr. Lars Grootswagers from The Netherlands playing all along with the horses’ performance. The streaming and the scoring were managed by Mr. Michael Steurs from Belgium. Outstanding speaker: Mr. Eric Blaak from The Netherlands. Photographers from all over the world turned up at the beautiful structure of the Albert-Vahle-Halle, sneaking into the crowds of people to reach the arena where they positioned themselves to take pictures all along the show. For this edition, they were: Mrs. Lisa Abraham (United States); Mrs. Paola Drera (Italy); Mrs. Lore Beckers (Germany) and Mrs. Melanie Groger (Germany). The first day in Aachen started with the German Nationals that were the first step of the halter show competitions that took place during those days. On the 2nd day of this unique event we had the pleasure to see top-quality Yearling & Junior Fillies and Colts classes. The All Nations Cup 2019 ended up on Sunday with the Six Championships that showed us top-class horses and amazing performances. he first much-awaited edition of the European Championship was held on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th of October 2019 at ‘Sporting Club Paradise Horse and Pony’ in the picturesque historical borough of Sommacampagna, in the province of Verona, Italy. The Italian National Association of the Arabian Horse (Anica) took the reins of the organization and succeeded in passing another event of morphology with flying colours. An almost unanimous appreciation also came from Ecaho, its main representative President Jaroslav Lacina from the Czech Republic, and Mr. Nils Ismer from Germany as Chairman of the Show Commission. Anica was almost completely represented as there came President Eng. Marco Pittaluga who did the honours; General Secretary

Domenico Ciceroni; Vice President Ivo Ludi; Show Counsellor Claudio Mazza, and Counsellors Francesco Santoro and Valter Murino. The beauty competition registered as many as 120 purebred Arabian horses coming from all over Europe, implementing for the first time the new Echao rule that the show must only be entered by purebred Arabian horses, born and bred in the Old Continent, and owned by European breeders; reason for which the level of contenders proved to be incredibly outstanding. Members of the judging panel were: Mr. Hamza Ahmed (Egypt); Mr. Ismer Mark (Deutschland); Mr. Rota Pierluigi (Italy); Mrs. Schibler Renata (Switzerland); Mrs. Stojanowska Anna (Poland) and Mr. Al Husseini Sufian Taha (Palestine).

CONCLUSION:

Besides Anica and Ecaho’s main representatives, the Show was attended by world famous opera singer Cecilia Gasdia who gave a breath-taking performance to celebrate the winning horses and owners in the preliminary categories. Today Cecilia is Superintendent of the ‘Arena of Verona Foundation’ and blessed the event with some of her most famous songs. Statues of Pharaohs and Sphinxes scattered all around the competition field created a mesmerizing atmosphere and crowned another piece of rare beauty, a Bronze sculpture depicting Romeo and Juliet by master Nicola Beber that was placed in the middle of the ring.

Mayor Eng. Fabrizio Bertolaso also turned up at the Final Championships; with him, some representatives of the Corps of Carabinieri who manned the premises of the Equestrian Centre and watched over the safety of both men and horses for two days. Even Mayor took part in the Award Ceremony of the winners flanked by Anica and Ecaho’s main representatives. Eng. Fabrizio Bertolaso was keen to congratulate Anica on an impeccable organization of the show as well as the owners of the beautiful Equestrian Centre. Mayor also formulated strong intentions to commit the Municipality to future Arabian Horses’ beauty competitions.

Interviewed by Sonja Smaldone Successful photographers often become idols of new generations. It’s always interesting to see them in life, to take a glance behind the scenes, and hear their unique stories on how they got into photography. That’s the aim of the interview with Emma Emerelle, a young but very promising Arabian horses photographer. Hi Emma. Please introduce yourself to us. Who are you? Where are you and your family from? My official name is Emma van Veldhuisen and I am 24 years old. I was born and raised in the Netherlands, where I am still living this day. I am a true cat lady and very much adore my cats, but also my two horses. I always get questions where I got the name Emerelle from. It is a character of a fairy-tale book I liked when I was younger. Now, it has even more meaning than when I first picked the name for my photography. Because I have developed more into fairy-tale style photography. How did you first get into photography? My mom had a camera when I was younger and I always enjoyed using it to photograph my own horses, or friends from my stable. I never really did anything serious with it, but I always had this big love for photos. Then about two years ago, I finally bought my own horse trailer and this gave me the opportunity to model for other photographers with my horses. I did so many in a summertime long, that I got a lot of interest back into photographing. I decided to buy my own good gear and from there I started practising on a more serious basis. What is your favorite brand of Camera and why? I have only ever photographed with a Canon camera. So that is my favourite brand, but I don’t really know why… This was the brand my mother used and felt familiar with. I never looked into other brands really. My lens is a Tamron, which was easier to buy when I just started. It works good for me, but I will probably buy the Canon lens some day in the future. How would you describe your photography style? I have been photographing for a year now and through the last few months I noticed that my photos became more and more into a fairy-tale kind of vibe. I would like to call my style: dreamy, warm and loving. My expertise is catching the connection between a horse and his human and this in the most natural way possible, without any tack or braids. To do so, I use a special photo halter I can edit out in Photoshop. My models often wear nice long dresses which fits perfectly in the fairy-tale look! To give my photos this warm vibe, I always try to shoot during sunset or sunrise, to catch the golden hour. You will barely find any blue or green colours in my photos.

AHM | 206

When you travel, what do you take with you? I love to do little equine photo trips with friends who are also equine photographers. We always bring our gear, laptop, special photo halters and some nice dresses. What is your favorite subject to photograph? My favorite subject is of course a beautiful Arabian horse, with his person. I love to shoot the connection between human and horse. But action shots are also really nice. Who do you inherit your artistic ability from? Is anyone else in your family artistic? I come from a very artistic family. My mom is an artist with glass, which she sells successfully on art markets and my dad is a good drawer. My sister is also a good drawer, but she also paints and sews. My brother is a professional welder and very good with wood, he makes all types of furniture. Myself have always been very creative, started at a young age, crafting loads of things. I did sell drawings for a while and my other business is making jewellery out of horse hair. How do you educate yourself to take better pictures? I think I’ve learned the most by looking at other photographers, who inspire me. And also, just doing and trying

AHM | 207

many things. A lot of photos turn out to be a failure in the end, but I always learn from this. And of course, still learning a lot now. I found a very good friend through equine photography and she also helps me often when I get stuck in photo-shop. What is one cool fact you can tell us about yourself? A cool fact about myself… Hard to think of one! A cool fact about my photos is that I always say: My photos must look like you are looking to them through sunglasses. What was your career path? How did you get from being an aspiring photographer to actually doing it full time, for a living and traveling the world? I started my business of making horse jewelry when I was 18 years old, so I already had an easy agenda on when I wanted to do things. This gave me a lot of time and ease to play with my photography interest. When I started photography a year ago, it was meant to be a hobby. I did many photoshoots for free and started organizing photomeetings. This is a concept where I invite a few nice models and other photographers on a really beautiful place, to take portfolio shots. I did this all for free, but it brought me a lot of friends, a good time and of course beautiful pictures! Because of this, my portfolio became more and more special and people were really interested in booking me. Before I knew it, my agenda was full with photoshoot bookings! The photo-meetings are turning more and more into photo trips to other countries. I absolutely love to combine traveling and equine photographing! Do you have any upcoming exhibitions or collaborations? I have never done an exhibition before. But I do have a few ideas in my head what else I could do with my photos. I hope I can work these ideas out in the near future! I often work together with other equine photographers, who all turned into good friends. We are currently planning a photo trip to Austria, for next spring. What are your hopes and dreams or future goals, where do you see yourself in the next 10 years? I do have a few things on my bucket list according to my photography! I would be ecstatic with a cover photo on an equine magazine. And I very much hope some big Dutch Magazines will ask me some day. There are a few people in the Netherlands who I would love to photograph… But mostly of all, my dream would come through, if I get booked and flown over to other countries, preferably outside of Europe. But let’s start easy and having a goal to get a European booking! Thank you so much Emma. On behalf of the entire AHM team, I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

lthough the true origins of Falconry are still unknown, everyone agrees that it must be recognized as one of the oldest hunting methods as well as an activity that is still relevant today. No doubt the term falconry stems from the use of hawks, which are the fastest birds in the world. It is a name that applies to flight hunting as it was originally adopted in the vast desert regions of central Asian countries by nomadic populations and hunters with the mastery of the use of raptors such as: Falco cherrug, Falco rusticolus, Falco biarnicus, Falco peregrinus, This activity would later develop in the European countries following the taming of the Arabian horse, a crucial companion of the man, but also in the Middle East due to the many caravans that would cross those countries. The use of prey birds was strictly related to getting food easily, and it was practised by men wanting to free themselves from harvesting. Such an unsophisticated hunting activity quickly developed among populations operating into the nature world, often living in topographies and climates of territories hosting animal species suitable for hunting. In the history books, one must have seen the drapery of Bayeux dating back to the 10th century representing an astonishing scene of falconry: William the Conqueror with a hawk in his hand receives Harold, which proves the importance of the practice at the time. During the Crusades, High Dignitary Knights in Europe discovered an ancestral practice of this

extraordinary hunting activity. In this continuity, the Holy King Louis IX ordered, in 1248, his portrait with a hawk in his hand. Another no less famous King, Charles V, gave special attention to the writing of the Book of ‘Roy Modus’, a historical Bible on Falconry that has long been an important reference book. Falconry was considered as an emblem of nobility in many European Royal Courts, it attracted the attention of several monarchs who would rival different specimens of birds of prey, particularly the hawks as they would represent the form of inaccessible beauty. It was in the Flanders, precisely in the small village of Arendonk, from the 10th to the 18th century, where one could buy the most beautiful birds for European courses. In Belgium, the Falconry Club of Loo was very dynamic; until 1853 it was placed under the eminent protection of King William III of the Netherlands. From most ancient times to the present day, falconry has always been and it must remain an Art, a sum of all knowledge, an essential element for any artistic expression with a tradition possessing its own codes and its own techniques for hunting. In the modern era, from the 18th to the 19th century, the appearance and the use of the rifle, which allowed for faster hunting, did eclipse the practise of falconry for a while, yet, it would never completely disappear. In the framework of different practices and uses of falconry, high flying kept being practised in two ways: top- flight or visual flight, both performed on rather

AHM | 217

flat areas, with clear sky and the use of the gyrfalcon, also known as Falco Rusticolus. It should be noted that top-flight still remains the most sophisticated performance in flight-hunting insofar as it requires a very focused action on the part of the falconer, this sort of hunting being especially oriented towards the feathered game like the partridge, the pheasant without forgetting the waterfowl. As far as low-flight is concerned, it can be practiced either in the undergrowth or in the plain, which allows hawks to hunt game animals or even rabbits, deer or small boars, but also small feathered animals, placed on the falconer’s point, the bird of prey waits for its moment, when the falconer frees it to stalk its prey in the space over it, the bird will be on its favourite ground. As opposed to collective imagination, at no time in history has falconry been the exclusive preserve of Middle Eastern

countries, it was largely practiced also in Europe in countries where hawks managed to adapt to indoor or rugged terrains, just as much as in desert regions. All countries where falconry has long been a traditional practise have always been aware of their task of protecting and taking this discipline to the next step in an ever-changing world. So, in 1969 two organizations were set up: The Fund of Intervention for the Raptors (FIR) and the International Falconry Association (IAF) later, in 1976, it was held the first World Falconry Conference in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, which managed to gather nearly eighty countries, was myself able to follow the debates. Falconry is part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and it must be considered as an Art, all falconers, each with their own cultural background, have a developed sense of ethics about their specialty and great respect for birds. We must bear in mind that anyone wishing to get the title of ‘Falconer’ will have to go through years of apprenticeship, France always remains the cradle of European falconry with its own language that stays unique in the world for its great diversity. The title of Master Falconer is a rarity to obtain. French falconer Bernard Bailly is one of those who made it as his knowledge is impressive, but, like all scholars, he quite often remains locked in his own Art. It is necessary to know how to

communicate and transmit signals as he himself would profit from it. In the modern era some valuable progress has been made in falconry, this can be seen in the quality of bird feed, in the use of telemetry that enormously reduces the loss of a bird, as well as in a more accurate veterinary care; yet, it is rather sad to note that some professionals in veterinary medicine are still behind in this specific sector, they are more like practitioners for common animals. Very beautiful and well-equipped facilities for veterinary care have been installed at great costs in today’s Gulf countries, contrary to what happens in Europe where the means are not the same. It is no secret that in the United Arab Emirates local lobbies have long been involved in this activity and its traditions are no longer the preserve of Bedouin tribes, but they are subject to the influence of wealthy local dignitaries.

countries hold Moroccan falconers’ great knowledge in high esteem as they are maintaining a high tradition related to men and to their faithful purebred Arabian Asil horses. At a cultural level, hawks have always captivated artists over the centuries, and have inspired them in their sculptures as well as in their paintings. Among those artists, we shall mention: Philippe de Champaigne, Giotto, Pisanello, Gozzoli, Holbein, Oudry, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Henri Rousseau, Eugene Fromentin, Utamaro and many others whose works are exhibited at the most famous museums in the world. The passion for falconry is a ‘wealth’ to be treasured by all those people who love the Divine that shines through these Masters of the Wind.

For instance, bustard hunting with the hawks takes now place in off-roads cars that have replaced the horses who once offered a view of rare beauty. The origins of hawk hunting cannot be ascribed to the countries of the Middle East. As a matter of fact, in the Kingdom of Morocco, more precisely in El Jadida in the province of Doukkala where falconry is ageless, the Ouled Frej Lekouassem Tribe brings together the most valuable scholars of falconry that can be found across the world. They continue to live close to their birds, which bear the respectful name of ‘at-tayr al hur’, that is, free bird. Although in their advanced age, these protagonists have the concern to transmit their history along with this cultural heritage, set deep inside of themselves. Each year, the finesse of their Art is disclosed to the amateurs at the Grand Moussem Moulay Abdallah where such a universal heritage is presented in its true dimension, but, it is also proposed in falconry initiation workshops, most Gulf

ometimes the choice of doing a satisfying and remunerative job may look like a dream, a challenge or a commitment that in some cases can be risky, have a lucky star or be fortunate enough.

The case of 50 years-old Bernard Bailly, born in the historical and cultural Region of Berry, France, in a happy family, did reflect his future orientation at the end of the school period that was necessary to build himself intellectually. His story began at the age of 12 when, already captivated by the animal world, he posed for a photo in the company of a seated horse, his dog and a falcon in his hand. From there the design of a career began to loom. Provided with reasonable skills in horseback riding, one day on a horse ride, Bailly collected from the ground a buzzard that had fallen from the nest, he kept the bird with him because he wanted to breed it, he was also going to train it by doing appropriate readings so to avoid too many mistakes that any beginner like him at the time could make when trying to do it right. Driven by curiosity, young Bernard Bailly went in search of technical and practical information among falconers who practiced in the hexagon. Later, a more serious involvement in understanding what was happening in the birds of prey industry led him to take into account a job in relation to his ideas. At the age of 15, with the support of his parents, he bought his first falcon in Germany. As the bird of prey had already been trained by that time, Bailly was then able to practice flight-hunting inside the entire family property, yet, this did not prevent him from completing his classic studies well be-

fore accomplishing his compulsory military service at the time. Since he did not like to stay idle, Bailly settled down as an agricultural operator and built a rabbit farm, an activity that he chose not by chance, but to keep himself close to the horse, and be able to learn more and more about the Art of falconry that he had previously discovered. In order to understand more rapidly his personal journey, as he was going through all the basic steps required, Bailly decided to improve his ability to detain raptors, given that this kind of activity was codified by the administration. His professional career in the area of birds of prey was further consolidated by the following jobs he got in Provins, at the Zoo de la Flèche, and that one at the Zoo d’AmnĂŠville where he set up an entire bird show by himself. Currently working at the National Domain of Chambord, Bernard Bailly shows the public all his knowledge on falconry, we must not ignore that his possession of the title of Master Falconer is of huge importance for the Domain. His deepest desire is now to join in the Arts belonging to mankind, horseback riding and falconry as they all represent values of an ancestral heritage. However, it will be necessary for him to pass his knowledge and recommendations onto selected pupils with no restraints, which is something quite hard when one is a renowned Master, but, with the passing of time, this becomes an obligation to take action and give back what one has once received from the others.

“For the Paris issue 2019, I had the chance to interview Phillip and Kelle Saucier from Texas. They got married few months ago and have just come back from their honey-moon. Kelle has grown up around horses, her first horse was a flea bitten Arabian, CP Mentor. He was her first horse and her first best friend. Less we knew about her husband Phil so it was quite interesting to dig into the past of this fortunate man and find out what’s like to share his life with an accomplished horsewoman like Kelle…” Hello Kelle, Hello Phillip. When did you first meet?

We met on April 28th 2017 at a country music festival called Stagecoach in California. I was there on a girls’ trip, not wanting any kind of relationship and he was there with his boys, not wanting any relationship, but yet he took my hand that night and never let it go. He also told me that night, that his name, Phillip, means “Lover of horses.”

Phillip, when and how did you ask Kelle to marry you? Kelle had been talking about wanting a place to call home since I met her, so earlier this year I surprised her with a new house and got down on one knee at the same time. It’s a much longer story but I think she was really surprised.

Kelle, what was your first reaction?

He really fooled me, he and the agent made me believe the house sold to someone else. Then a few weeks later told me the house might be available again and asked if I wanted to go see it one more time. While walking around, Phil surprised me and told me it was actually our house and he already bought it. Then he got down on one knee with a ring. I almost fell over! What a dream.

What are in your opinion the key elements for a good and long-term relationship today?

Communication and respect are key. But also you have to fully except each other and who you are. We both are a little bit of wild, free spirits and I think from day one we have let each other be who we are. Tyler Rich as a great song called “Leave Her Wild” and I think that is really fitting for us.

Kelle, please we would like to know everything about your life and involvement with horses. Where does this passion for horses come from? What role has it played in building your life? Do you own purebred Arabians yourself? What is your relationship with your horses?

My passion for horses is something I was born with. There is no other way to put it. I thank my parents greatly for always having horses as part of my life because I don’t know who I would be without them. They are literally not just a part of my life, they are a part of my soul. Everything I am, who I am, I have learned from horses. Phil had to learn right away that they were not some phase or hobby in my life. They are everything in my life. When I am having a bad day, if I feel sick, or if I’m stressed out, all I have to do is go see my horses and life is instantly better. How lucky Am I that my biggest vice in life, my biggest addiction, is something that makes me feel so happy! It may not be the cheapest thing in the world, but it’s ok because I don’t shop for nice clothes or purses or shoes. All my money goes to my horses. I have had Arabians or half Arabians all my life. Right now, I currently have a big black Half Arabian that looks like Black Beauty, and I have a Friesian.

Phillip, to what extent has Kelle’s passion for Arabian horses influenced your life?

I knew nothing about horses when I met Kelle. Soon after I realized how many people have horses. It seems like everywhere I go now, horses get brought up. Before Kelle, I never knew anyone with horses. She has really opened my eyes to a whole new world. I know I’ll never be as “horse crazy” as Kelle is, I’m not sure anyone will be, but I definitely have a whole new appreciation for them. Kelle has helped me learn a lot. I now can spot an Arabian instantly and can see the differences between them and other horses. I love Arabians, they are so beautiful and really have a ton of personality. I love our Friesian too. I ride him because he puts up with me. I know we will have horses always and I know I will learn a lot more over the years. Kelle tells me I need to show, we will see about that.

Guys, describe an average day with your horses.

When we go to the barn as a Family, we normally bring the dogs. Phil throws the ball around for the dogs while I work the horses. He helps me with bath time and treats. Some days we will both ride, but there aren’t many trails around so the rides are pretty short.

AHM | 227

AHM | 228

Kelle, do you still participate in beauty competitions?

I only did one ages ago when I was 18… The only competitions for me are the horse shows!

Are you planning to have any children? Will you educate them to love and respect horses?

We sure are, actually expecting our first in May of 2020. I will absolutely raise them to respect and be kind to all animals. I hope they love horses but I won’t push it on them. Horses will always be my thing and I would love to share that with my child, but it’s ok if they find their own thing too.

How do you see yourselves in ten years?

In ten years, I’d love to be living on a ranch with my family. I dream of having my horses in my back yard along with a ton of other animals. I’d be so happy just taking care of them and my family all day every day.

“Always be yourself. Unless you can be a unicorn, then always be a unicorn”. Kelle, I found this quote on your Facebook timeline. Can you elaborate on this a bit more? Hahaha, I don’t have a great answer for this other than I think

of someone who is a “unicorn” as being a person who is that all around amazing soul that you hear about but don’t believe actually exists. So if you can be a unicorn to someone, then you have accomplished making them believe in the unbelievable. Unicorns do exist :)

Phillip, will you please leave one last message for our readers? I had always wondered why my parents would name me something that meant “Lover of horses”. It didn’t make any sense to me until I met Kelle, then it all made since. We were meant to be. I never thought I’d be a “Horse Husband” but I feel like the luckiest man on earth. Kelle is the kindest, most compassionate, loving human I have ever known and if horses have anything to do with that, then everyone should get a horse.

Thank you so much guys for your contribution. It was great to have you both with us today. On behalf of the entire Arabian Horse Magazine team, I would like to thank you for the precious time you have dedicated to us and we wish you all the best and good luck in your future life together with your amazing horses!

Interviewed by Sonja Smaldone

To sculptor Carol Fensholt Nierenberg, a beautiful and proud horse is nature’s most exquisite form. It was just such equines that captured Carol’s imagination as a child –– the books ‘King of the Wind’ and ‘The Black Stallion’ were her favourites; her favourite sculpture, Barye’s ‘Cheval Turc;’ her favourite paintings were of Bedouin war steeds by Gericault, Schreyer and Vernet. She has always been fascinated by the horse’s expressive power –– the equine as incarnation of primal energy and passion. Today, Carol and her husband, Stuart M. Nierenberg, formerly an attorney in private practice in Manhattan, reside in Carefree, Arizona, on 20 acres they call Silver Box Southwest, also home to her dream horses and site of her studio. Hello Mrs. Carol. First and foremost, we’d like to thank you very much for gladly welcoming this interview. Just to set the scene with our readers, will you please give me some background to you and to your family? I was born into a family that was neither horsey nor visual-artsy –– so who knows where I come from? Johann Strauss is a distant ancestor, and my mother and aunt had great musical talent –– piano, voice and violin. I myself cannot carry a tune, but perhaps art is art no matter the form, and runs in families… Can you talk a little about your formative years as an artist? Have you been trained, and if so from what Institutions? Or are you self-taught? I always smile when I hear artists saying they are self-taught –– to me, it seems improbable that one can learn much from someone who knows nothing. My own teachers have been many. First and foremost is the horse itself –– all my life, I have closely studied its form, motion and moods. Then there are the great books on equine sculpting and anatomy –– by Ellenberger, Goldfinger, Lanteri, Muybridge, Stubbs –– and masterworks by great equine artists I revere: Barye, Bugatti, Bernini, de Dreux, Gericault, Schreyer, Vernet. Finally, I have taken a number of workshops at the Scottsdale Artists’ School and studied in the studios of other sculptors; these have been essential in terms of learning to build armatures (the internal frame supporting the clay), and the tools, techniques and best clays for the purpose. When and why did you start sculpting horses? What does the horse really represent to you? I started drawing horses at age two, before I even really knew in my head what they were. It came from my heart –– from a passion for horses that seems to be inborn in many people –– who knows why? My first sculpture medium was an Ivory Soap bar, when I was age five. To me, the horse is elemental. It is the most like fire of any living thing. It draws me like a flame. What’s the story behind the creation of Silver Box Studios? The “Silver Box” is that special place in our hearts where our most precious memories reside –– ever ready to be savored anew, and where they will live as long as we do. Our home is Silver Box Southwest –– a lovely site for Stu, my husband, and me, and for friends and family, to experience memorable Silver Box moments. Silver Box Studios is an extension of that –– a way to capture, in bronze, beauty seen and felt. AHM | 230

AHM | 231

AHM | 232

Which are the main principles of your artistry? Why did you choose sculpting instead of painting or photographing to immortalize your horses? I didn’t choose sculpting –– it chose me. I love the challenge of creating an “image” in 360 degrees –– or, more precisely, infinite degrees –– as opposed to painting’s or photography’s just one view. My first principle is: Inside out! Capture the inner fire of the animal, not just its form. “Form only” is surface only. It has no life. Is what evolves from the chunks of clay always what you planned or expected? Never! Are your children what you expected? I do start with a vision, and what I create always seems to fall within the parameters of my distinctive style –– just as your children bear the genetic signature of you, their parent. But as Kahlil Gibran famously said, “Your children are not your children … They come through you but not from you. And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.” So it is with my sculptures. Which famous Arabian horses have you portrayed in your works in bronze so far? Can you name few of them please? They include the immortal Khadraj NA, whom we sadly lost recently –– his bronze was a commission by Larry Jerome on the occasion of Khadraj’s 25th birthday celebration; Major Mac V as a memorial to Sheila Varian; Om El Excella and her million-dollar filly Om El Erodite in honor of Sigi Siller; the multi-National Champion Ghazala El Jamal, now owned by Rose City Arabians; and others beloved by their owners but not so famous. Do you also make Trophies for show competitions? Yes, I have created trophies for the Arabian Breeders World Cup, the Scottsdale Arabian Show, the Kuwait Nationals and Egyptian Event, and the IntArah Dream Embryo Auction Jackpot Championship. Carol, another interesting part of your job is focused on jewelry creations. What kind of material do you use to make them? What’s your source of inspiration to create them? Tell us more about it, please. Jewelry is a new direction for me. I am using sterling silver, semi-precious colored

stones, 18-karat gold and diamonds. It started because I wanted to wear my own work. I call my line “Silver Box Studios Wearable Sculptures,” because they are, in fact, my sculptures –– miniaturized. My husband Stu loves them because the pieces can be carried in his pocket –– unlike heavy bronzes, which require real muscle, and sometimes a forklift, to move around. How has your work evolved since you first began your own label? How is it now received

internationally? I strive to grow in some way with each piece. I find the work has the same international appeal as the Arabian horse. What are you fascinated by at the moment, and how does it fit into your work? What most fascinates me is the difference between one horse and another. When you look at your horses in a field, what is it –– other than colour and markings, of course –– that enables you to tell one from another? Let’s say they’re all bay, no markings. Who’s who? Somehow, you know –– and you know by numerous tiny anatomical differences that are not always consciously registered. But they add up –– to a unique individual. Even expression is a function of minute anatomical variation. Bringing these differences into awareness is critical to a sculptor, especially when trying to model a specific individual. What is the toughest part of your job? And the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started this business? The toughest part for me is the monetary cost of bronze production –– and that’s after I have invested scores or even hundreds of hours of my time in the clay model. Bronze casting is an eight- to twelve-week undertaking involving multiple time-consuming steps by many different specialized artisans. It’s a 5,000-year-old process that, except for a few electric tools and new materials, hasn’t changed since the Bronze Age. Therefore, it is very expensive –– hundreds of dollars for a small, simple piece, and thousands for something complex. Unlike a painting, which costs a few dollars in materials to make, it’s not something I can create without a large financial investment on my part –– and, once cast, on the part of my clients. Unfortunately, then, the hard lesson is that bronze is an art form that relatively few can readily afford. So, for that matter, is fine jewellery. I myself wouldn’t be able to do it, if not for my savings from a previous career in publishing. And without Stu’s support. Have you ever exhibited your artistic production in public or private galleries? If so, whereabouts exactly?

AHM | 236

AHM | 237

AHM | 238

Yes, in California, Scottsdale, Tucson, North Carolina, Florida and elsewhere. What are your works in progress? Right now, I’m struggling with a new sculpture idea, and having trouble making it work. Stay tuned! What is the best advice you can give to your clients? And what’s your promise to them? Please be patient. You can’t rush a bronze –– not the maquette (clay model), and not the production process. But I promise it will be worth the wait. Besides being a full-time artist, you and your husband are also the owners of ‘Silver Box Southwest’ breeding site. Do you use your horses for mainly breeding or also for show purposes? We breed a little, show a little, and ride a lot. My heart horse is a black Arabian stallion, Sultan AS, with whom I fell madly in love on a wild galloping ride in the mountains of Tierra Sante/Arabian Soul in Mexico. Stu rides a palomino Lusitano stallion –– a big, beautiful baroque boy. Nothing on Earth is closer to heaven than a long, rollicking canter on our stallions, along the amazing hilly, windy, sandy trails of the spectacular Sonoran Desert, here in the sunny, dry American Southwest. What would you like to achieve before the end of year 2019? I would like to solve the conundrum of the new concept I am working hard to make work! Carol, would you like to leave a final message to our readers and to those who are now curious to get to know you better? It would be a delight to meet each of the readers of this article, a thrill to see their horses –– and an honor to create a beautiful bronze for them. Thank you so much Mrs. Carol! Thank you, Arabian Horse Magazine, for the privilege!

Joe & Kim Orr’s Rose City Arabians is a boutique breeding and show ranch, dedicated to international quality. They are very passionate about their fabulous mares, breeding, evolving and presenting the world’s finest Arabian horses to the most internationally accomplished breeders, trainers and enthusiasts. We on AHM Team had the pleasure to interview both. Hello Joe and Kim. Thank you very much for accepting our interview. Let’s start from the very beginning. Please, introduce yourselves to our readers. Who are you? Kim and I are friends, parents, grandparents, entrepreneurs and in love with all of life. When did you start taking an interest in the Arabian horse breed? In 1986. We enjoyed a ride to Scottsdale and U.S National championship with a Reigning champion. We then took a 20year sabbatical for business and upon retirement chose to chase our passion of the Arabian horse. What made you prefer the Arabian breed to all the other breeds? The Arabian is intelligent, a gentle family horses while offering the natural beauty and unique presence that only an Arabian offers. And how long have you been breeding it? On and off 35 years. When was Rose City Arabians created? In 2015. Which bloodlines are mostly bred at your Stud? We chose Padron Psyche, Enzo, Shanghai EA, Marwan Al Shaqab, Paris El Jamaal among others. What does the word ‘breeding’ mean to you? What specific qualities or skills do you need to become a good breeder? Breeding is a responsibility and commitment to the animal you are creating life for. Therefore, Kim and I literally traveled the world speaking and learning from the most successful breeders (no matter the size) on every continent. These relationships have turned into mentorships and lifelong friendships. We believe the most important skill you need AHM | 243

to be a successful breeder is to be a serious student. Kim and I chose to locate 3 of the top breeding mares in the world for foundation mares for a myriad of reasons: 1) We found that no matter how many mares a farm owned and bred, it was always only a consistent handful that created their National and World champions. After studying the commonalities, we were fortunate enough to be the 1st to be offered U.S and Australian National champion and International champion producing Ghazala El Jamaal!

Then Bob & Dixie North offered us their gorgeous and million dollar producing JFN Captive Love (Padron Psyche x JJ Pretty Moment). 2) Although these were large investments we were only wanting 3 and it seemed like the right move to immediately catapult Rose City into an international breeding ranch. 3) We simply did not want to put too many babies on the ground that did not have the best chances of being on the world stage. We are ultimately responsible for the quality of their life. What’s your relationship with your horses? Our horses are all family. Our friends and family enjoy them daily.

How much time do you spend with them? Every day that we are not traveling we are hands on every day and love it. Just like our dogs…

Who is the most important breeding stallion at Rose City Arabians at the moment? Enotri EEA (Shanghai EA x Enjoi E x Enzo) is a partnership stallion that was leased by Al Shaqab at the age of 3. The only American owned stallion ever leased by Al Shaqab so it was difficult to say no. We had not seen him in person for 3 years until 30 days ago in Italy when he completed his Al Shaqab commitment – we were shocked! Everything we ever wanted was standing before your very eyes. .Which of your mares do you think is the most important? That is like asking which of your kids are your favorites… If you could name one Arabian that comes the closest to your ideal, which one would that be today? Enotri EEA. How do you tackle the concepts of ‘beauty’ and ‘functional correctness’ in our modern day Arabians? Great question. We attempt to be highly researched mad scientists of sort. In the end it is all a wild gamble but researching the genotype with the phenotype and then actually traveling and laying eyes on the stallion up close and personal along with seeking out common lineage offspring (if possible) helps better the odds for sure. As I said before, we are students first and gamblers second… How would you advise a young person eager to undertake a breeder career? including temperament. Ask a ton of questions and find mentors – listen. Then Rock-N-Roll Do you also breed Purebred Arabians for show purposes? If so, where did this passion for morphology competitions arise from? Absolutely! The competitiveness is twofold:1) As breeders we want to give life to a creation that is awarded by the great judges of our industry. 2) It’s just plain awesome to win… What is it you’d like to still experiment at this stage of your breeding career in the Arabian horse industry? We only got back involved in 2015 after a 20year sabbatical so more travel, more mentors, more friends, more sharing and breeding a Scottsdale

H

ere we are at the fourth rendezvous with an overview on horse health and well-being. In this article, I would like to address one issue of particular concern for all owners and breeders of show horses of any breed: the transport of their animals. And, once again, I would like to speak about it from the ‘horse point of view with a particular eye to his needs, giving priority to the protection of his well-being as well as to his health as a direct consequence. I also hope to be able to give you some more food for thought, and maybe some suggestions that may come to you as a surprise.

This is the reason why the need to transport horses has considerably increased, compared to when it was once the man who needed to be transported. Unfortunately, as we all can see, horses do not like it at all. For a horse, transport, with any type of vehicle, is quite exhausting: it involves a great deal of physical energy and not just psychological stress, two factors that may cause serious metabolic alterations that occasionally may also lead to real pathologies. All the phases of transport are demanding: the separation from the group or the environment which the horse is accustomed to (let us re-

Since ancient times, the horse has always accompanied the man in his movements, whether they were for migratory, war, ceremonial or playful purposes. Indeed, the horse was the principal means of transportation for the man, the latter would benefit from his strength, agility and endurance as well as from his beauty. However, his use as a means of transport is almost disappeared following the machine age, whereas sports and recreational activities to which he is protagonist have increased more than proportionally.

member that the journey begins right from there), the loading phase, the journey itself, the unloading phase, the new lodgings.

SEPARATION FROM THE ENVIRONMENT: Horses should be kept in a quiet environment with enough room and access to water and food before transport, so that they are well rested at the loading phase. They must be supplied with water and hay at will in the hours before departure, while concentrated food must be gradually reduced. The

animals should be able to rest untied for not less than forty-eight hours in a suitable and quiet area before the journey, with enough space to turn around and lie down, and provided with an adequate amount of litter. When the horse has to be loaded on the vehicle, it is very important to do it quietly and slowly. Any abrupt movements due to haste may not be understood by the horse and may generate fear and rebelliousness in the following manoeuvres. Horses that have had regular and positive interactions with people will generally be less fearful and easier to handle. Another precaution is

thick block or by reducing tire pressure to lower the vehicle itself. Moreover, filling the gap below the ramp to minimize the rumbling noise can also be very helpful. Light is another important factor though quite often neglected: while at night a horse can see better than a man, strong contrasts of light turn to be a source of anxiety during the day; the space in front of him looks like a dark cave that may contain any sort of oddity inside: why should he enter it? Therefore, it can be of great help to illuminate the room inside of the vehicle, even if we can see it very well. It is good that the interior of the van and its floor be light in colour. Let us remember that a first negative loading experience can strongly compromise the following phases, making them an ordeal for both men and animals: spending time and patience to make it as easy as possible means saving lots of troubles in the future, and, above all, avoiding the horse an indelible trauma. THE JOURNEY: As the horse must stand upright during transport, traveling on a vehicle that is always shaking may translate into a massive muscle strain for him, as he is forced to continually correct the position of his head, neck and limbs to maintain the balance. As a matter of fact, inadequate suspension or a too high tire pressure along with a bumpy driving style, can negatively affect the horse wellbeing as these do amplify shocks and shakings due to unevenness in the road. Inside of either trailers or trucks, animals can be positioned in the direction of travel, in the opposite direction or diagonally to the direction of travel. There have been many clinical studies on that, and we have seen that the position with the back of a horse facing the direction of travel is best to mitigate speed change or change of direction, but also to minimize accumulation of lactic acid and muscle enzymes at the end of the journey. The horse should then always have his head free so he can lower it at will and can protect himself from mucus stagnation, which may cause transport pneumonias as a result.

to place them in easily accessible areas close to the loading area when possible. LOADING PHASE: This is one of the most stressful phases of transport. While it is obvious that the access ramp to and the floor of the vehicle should not be slippery, it is perhaps less obvious, especially for horses that walk on the ramp for the first time, to think of reducing the slope of the ramp by positioning the truck near a speed bump on the ground, by using a

There exist subjects who get very stressed when they travel alone unlike some others who, instead, suffer from being close to unknown animals: a problem that is hard to solve because the only solution would be to have animals who already know each other! The ventilation or, more precisely, the microclimate inside the vehicle is a crucial issue, it requires an adequate balance between all the components of breathable air as well as a correct temperature of the environment: in the relatively small space of a trailer or truck, very good airing it is necessary in order to restrict accumulation of ammonia and carbon dioxide, to keep an adequate degree of humidity in the environment and prevent excess warmth during the hot season. This is why natural ventilation can suffice for short journeys and inside AHM | 251

of not too large vehicles; on the contrary, forced ventilation becomes essential (also when the vehicle is stationary) for long journeys on high-sided vehicles. In optimal microclimate conditions, a horse will best travel with no blanket or protections: he is more at ease and less likely to cause himself bruises or injury. The impossibility for the horse to get food and water for prolonged periods is another issue that may lead to undesirable physical debility: let’s think about how stressful this can be for a great herbivorous grazer like the horse! Although animal handling regulation requires horses be watered at least every eight hours, access to water and food during the journey should be planned ahead with stops at four or five hour intervals and for thirty minutes at least. An inadequate supply of water at all stages of the transport process leads to dehydration, heat stress and fatigue, while the supply of good quality forage can help create a fluid reserve in the intestine. Stops are also necessary to water, feed and check on the animals, but they also allow them to rest. Being transported results into a highly stressful condition for animals of all species. In general, in the case of animals intended for human consumption, this is an event they are faced with only once in their lifetime (but that should not be mismanaged because of that). In the case of animal intended for sports activity or as pets this may be a frequent and regular need they must adapt to, they may get used to, but that may also become a major source of stress if managed with no adequate knowledge of the needs of every single individual, each with its own specific features of species, type, age, nature and temperament. The horse himself will provide us with relevant information on his well-being or discomfort. Just by observing him very carefully during the journey, either by close or through video cameras, we will be able to see if he has laboured breathing, chills, excessive sweating or lesions on the skin or limbs. This will allow us to assess how transport is actually going or what other action must be taken. You can evaluate his level of tiredness not by the duration of the journey, but by observing his posture and resting behaviour, because each subject has different adaptive and reactive abilities. All assessments that will allow us to improve the conditions on following journeys.

AHM | 252

UNLOADING PHASE: All the problems encountered at the loading stage will recur in this phase, but in reverse. Fortunately with less hassles, because the horse will descend more willingly than he did when loaded on the vehicle. Another kind of adjustment that is rarely thought of still involves light: the horse moves from a dimly lit or dark space to a much brighter one, a passage that can cause him disorientation or fear. For example, when unloading is carried out early in the morning, it would be better not to position the hatchback eastward so to reduce animals’ reluctance to move forward when they face the morning sun. Or, you should be using a screen or a big tent to mitigate blinding sunlight if you are in broad daylight. Horses will also be faced with some adaptation problems inherent to a new place, new food as well as new interactions with unknown

subjects. Sometimes, they must even adapt to new time zone or new temperatures, all factors that can go far beyond animals’ adaptive capacity and can reduce their appetite, cause them weight loss and dehydration with consequent decrease in performance, if not real pathologies. THE NEW LODGINGS: At the end of the journey, and well before any performance, the horse should be allowed to rest, settle down and feed himself in peace, besides drinking plenty of water, possibly with electrolytes. The ultimate goal of providing the right conditions before, during, and at the end of transport, ought to be to ensure the wellbeing of the horses that need to travel, so that they stay healthy and fit until they are unloaded at their destination. In the light of the above, and given that an animal in transit must re-

main a healthy animal, the best approach to have a horse face a stressful situation is to get him accustomed to it: let him know about a means of transport since he is still a foal, let him become familiar with the ramp at the loading and unloading stage; teach him to even climb up and come down the ramp on his own (self-loading), and make sure he spends some time on a vehicle that is first stationary, then with the engine running, and then in motion for short journeys. Of course, this is time and energy consuming. However, implementing correct loading and unloading operations will prevent the horse from traumatic journeys. And, most of all, you will be rewarded by having a calm, healthy animal who is able to give you the results you expect from him.

BETWEEN EUROPE AND THE WORLD ‘PROFESSIONALS IN QUESTION, QUESTIONS FROM PROFESSIONALS’ Text by William Richardot de Choisey - Translation by Sonja Smaldone Pictures: Private Collection

Through the more or less beneficial developments of the breeding activity, the purebred Arabian has been used by many public or private actors at various events whose history has been marked by phenomena accompanied by success or sometimes incidents to be put in parallel with questionable practices. While breeding purebred Arabians has long been kept away from financial interests, breeding competitions were first devised in Paris as a zoo-technical tool in support of my idea of letting people discover this breed and making it a global show later on, but some manifestations have been regularly diverted to the profit of other causes. In what continues to maintain stakes in a competition at an international level today is that the range of professionals who are involved in it are of all kinds. Whether expatriates or not, groomers’ preparatory work is hardly put in the spotlight as yet. Same thing can be said about handlers who have to collect victories for horses which are almost kept as detainees by highly demanding foreign owners. All result factors that today have a common effect towards an internationalization

that no longer sees the same growth. Provision of services which support a certain number of handlers now extend beyond all national borders, although professionals who are employed over a significant number of years tend to secure their highly visible ‘dominance’ over international careers. Just a few new ‘faces’ appear now and then and revive a professional activity that there as elsewhere is a necessity for its survival, no one is immortal. For instance, promising young handlers such as: Hourseau, Leengganers, Lemmens, Michelle Moreno, Lyall, Sebastian, Simon, Tolra and many others are stationed in the paddock and you can often see them managing horses with the grace of showing a horse on the warm-up lap. How many professionals actually make their students benefit from their talent or experience? Of course, professionals would not go for it as it may jeopardize their position and allow neophytes to take over their place and their earnings. Every so often, the ‘novice’ may find his way barred for acts improper. Since I have been constantly present on many fields of competitions in Europe as well as in the Middle East or even elsewhere, I have had the chance to observe a new quality of professionals whose presentations reminds me of young Michael Byatt’s early days back in the 70s who used to perform with elegance and discretion, and especially the awareness of showcasing a purebred Arabian horse. The rest of his career it is common knowledge. The recent appearance of an equally remarkable handler will be subject for discussion in an interview given below.

Here is the presentation of Malik Emanuel Morrison, young professional handler that I will not only consider for his obvious qualities, but for the way he uses them. He is a young man born in South London in 1994 who, after joining his parents in Norfolk, was fortunate enough to have been closed to horses having previously worked at jumping events near Darlington, practicing this sport with success as an amateur. His life in Darlington was later complemented by the discovery of the Arabian horse at Cullinghurst Stud led by a couple that gave him a great opportunity to use up both his energy and heart, and that would seriously influence the young fellow by setting his sights on a professional life around these horses. When you meet Malik, you will notice that his approach to horses is as fine as amazing, quite simply an overwhelming stimulus. In 2014 he first experienced a competition in Kuwait with Miles Buckley who owns a very good training center. This was a necessary start to understand this discipline which is very special. Back home, he noticed Psadisho ibn Esstashan by Esstashan & Psayada bint Psyche which was stationed at Cullinghurst Stud. Since his young but real experience, he has principally been looking for type and movement in any Arabian horse as these are two points of strengths which differentiate this breed from all the others. When it comes to bloodlines, these seem to be only relevant when making reference to a famous stallion which shows those two major aspects in his eyes. While looking forward to taking up the responsibility of running his own breeding station, young handler Malik and his aunt installed Arabians Imperial last year. Two of their foals participated in the Arabian Horse Week End in the Netherlands, with Duke Santonio (Santorini x Amaliaa) being crowned first in his class, winner of the best head award and also gold medal champion yearling colt. Moreover, Duchess Amalyaa (Aja Angelo x Amaliaa) made her first appearance at the Midland Festival where she was first in her class and winner of the gold champion yearling title. With the help of Miles Buckley, these two horses brought Malik immense satisfaction. Aziza Arabians offered him to show the filly Amaliaa (Magnificent Magic x Aziza) which allowed him to win other titles at competitions. He was especially pride when his aunt could purchase Amaliaa who would become the foundation mare of their herd. After having had the opportunity to show horses in several countries, his main desire is now to be able to test his experience in Latin Ameri-

ca and more precisely in Brazil. Malik thinks he can one day become a good judge since he has a very good eye for recognizing excellent movement in an Arabian horse which to him amounts to 75% of the beauty while the other 25% relates to the rest. He is intimately persuaded that he can see how a good and beautiful Arabian horse really is to be like though I think that a more consistent on-field experience will be advisable for him to make. Regarding his view on the skills required to be judging at beauty and movement competitions, these may vary but they should all be based on a thorough knowledge of the breed. Being a breeder or a trainer is always a plus. At competitions, he thinks that the balance between the criteria of type and movement depend on each person. His opinion is very much based on type and movement assessments which for him go always together. He also argues that if he had some power in any one of the organizations of competitions, he would be absolutely trying to put new judges next to certain current officials. When questioning his experience on fields of competition, he is humble enough to say that it is not the best, but when you see him in action with a horse, you can feel all his athletic strength and passion getting so palpable during moments of happiness that he lives by himself alone. His best recent memory remains his participation in a competition held in the Middle East in 2015. As for the atmosphere of today’s shows, Malik says that it depends on various circumstances. For example, the Scandinavian Open Show feels like quite a family run event if compared to Aachen where the atmosphere remains very peculiar, with the participation of too many well-known horses and very rich owners. With regard to the ongoing frequent attacks on judges and show organizers, for him this is a very sensitive issue to deal with. He argues that criticism is always being made to people making judgments on horses, but he also says that there is always some basis in reality. Asking him about the Arabian horse industry which has become increasingly difficult these days, Malik points out that this sector is a particular one in which each actor tries to achieve the maximum level. He thinks that European breeders still have a place in major competitions, though he is well aware that Middle Eastern countries have a lot of money but, for him, this is not generating quality. ‘Everywhere people exploit their own best skills’, he says, specifying that ‘money comes and goes whilst an appropriate knowledge does not’. This judgment has amazed me a lot at such a young age. Soliciting his point of view on the concerns of the European breeders with regard to the European Organization of competitions, which makes

its own Law, he thinks that those who act behind the scenes do not have a monopoly on the expertise and the knowledge needed to secure a constant success and the support of a demanding, expert public. According to him, those people have forgotten that it is not only the horses that are judged as the final appreciation remains up to amateurs in response to current professionals such like organizers, judges, coaches and handlers. A whole new generation of actors will come up with new ideas and requirements; they will have to comply with it. In his opinion, amateurs actively participate in the preservation of an inherited knowledge; they can find an abuse and dissociate themselves from that practice moving towards something else which is worth being observed. When managers act by upholding the rules, this is to be considered as an appropriate tribute to the standards that have been passed down by talented predecessors who have put everything in place and are often wrongly labelled as prehistoric. Asking about how he sees his future with Arabian horses, moved as he is by his great passion, Malik sees it brilliant, ‘Everyone is attracted to what he likes’. His family-run Arabians Imperial breeding farm is convinced that with the support of a good

staff and a reliable team, everything can be accomplished through constant work. It is quite unusual to cross the path of a person like Malik. Let’s all pray to God he stays away from ephemeral practices or pressure leading to compromise. Thanks to his singular personality he will for sure gain the support and recognition by ‘renowned breeders’ from the American and European continent who like him are today the only ones to have kept the love for the Arabian horse whatever his destination. Referring to future major breeding competitions, Malik hopes that a breeder or an owner from the Old continent, which is aware of his potential, will entrust him with a correct and healthy Arabian horse. In a career of this kind where one can come across numerous players with deceptive vocations, it is certain that Malik Emanuel Morrison has a real dimension to be able to win one day the major title of World Champion in Paris, for him a well-deserved award to be inscribed in the glory of a manifestation that needs new faces and a deep reform. Today, some of the players who hold the controls shall remember that ‘God made men all of one blood’. And this is an undeniable truth.
