Owner: SQ Ageeb Partnership - Text by Sonja Smaldone
Quite as exotic as his name, meaning “What makes it different”, this young stallion is nothing short of stunning! His breeders from Al Saqran Horse Stud may have chosen this name to refer to the vibration of a free spirit, of a leader, someone who is not easily impressed by others but likes to impress and has the ability to unlock extraordinary beauty and virtues both in the barns and in the ring. A very short head, well-built muzzle, expressive eyes, and small, short, tipped ears are just a few amazing characteristics of this young stallion. But to be successful, you need to have a royal pedigree that serves

as a guarantee of what a horse may become in the future. Ageeb’s pedigree whose corners and crevices are just filled with super sires and aristocrat dams. He is no one else than a son of the living legend Fa El Rasheem and not anymore available to the public and out of CS Amay, one of the most exquisite Royal Colours’ daughters in Europe. FA El Rasheem needs no introduction to the world industry as he is just one of the most prolific reproducers of the 21st century. And his offspring are multi-awarded

champions horses throughout the globe. Through FA El Rasheem, SQ Ageeb is a grandson to the US breeding phenomenon Fa El Shawan (2005), therefore, a great-grandson to the legendary sire Marwan Al Shaqab (2000) (Gazal Al Shaqab x Little Liza Fame out of Katahza). His dam, CS Amay (2008) (Royal Colours x CS Opportunity) gifted SQ Ageeb with the prized strai-
ght Egyptian blood of Royal Colours, True Colours and Thee Desperado. His grand-dam CS Opportunity (2004) (Laman HVP x CS Nairobi out of PH Obsession) brings in additional straight Egyptian blood, but also precious Polish, Russian and Crabbet bloodlines that are easy to detect when looking further back at his ancestors. SQ Ageeb’s pedigree possesses countless layers

of beauty, type, and quality bestowed upon him by every member of this illustrious lineage. As a Yearling, SQ Ageeb was named Bronze Champion Yearling Colt at the very strong B Int. Show in Bergamo in 2018. His first babies born in 2021 just made a great impact on European breeding and there have come more from wonderful mares this year. Just to mention a few: the filly Iyairah El Aziz (2021) (out of Iman by Ajman Moniscione), the colt Pharaon El Aziz (2021) (out of Psyntia OS by Psytadel), the filly SFA Adelina (2021) (out of TX Adele) bred and owned by Scrivo Angelo, Italy.
In 2022, Ageeb has sired about 20 exceptional foals already, all born and bred in Europe, for example, the filly Aleeza (out of TF Malaga by TF Romeo), the filly Arianna El Aziz (out of Angela E by QR Marc) and the colt Portofino El Aziz (out of Psyntia by Psytadel). In addition, he has been successfully used also in Austria, where the first foals-crop is expected with much trepidation. SQ Ageeb is blossoming, heightening in quality with each passing year and this is no hidden truth to many illustrious breeders as one of them beliving in him was Antonia Bautista and Philip Looyens from Shiodome

Australia, has now access to his royal pedigree. SQ Ageeb is on the best way to leave his undeniable mark in the Arabian Horse world - stay tuned to follow his journey!

town of Ottaviano, nearby Naples, on 10-11 June, the well-known Italian Arabian horse breeder Donato Prisco organized the long-awaited “Vesuvio Trophy”, a morphology competition with a strong focus on the breed. The breeding farm lies at the foot of the Vesuvius volcano, which provides one of the most striking landscapes of the Neapolitan countryside. Reasonably enough, two different shows fell under the umbrella of the Vesuvio Trophy, the C- International Show and the Straight Egyptian Event, both Ecaho-affiliated shows governed by the EAHSC rules, Blue Book 2023. As the event officially kicked AHM | 32

CHINA INTERNATIONAL ARABIAN HORSE FESTIVAL 2023
August 27th -30th - Shenyang – China WRITTEN BY SONIA SMALDONE
Arabian Horse Magazine’s first-ever show tour to China for the International Arabian Horse Festival 2023 - took the team to a far-off destination, which was wholly new to us. We learned that Power, Beauty, and Freedom symbolize the horse in Chinese culture. China has a marvellous horse culture of 5,000 years. Today, nearly 6 million horses are estimated to live in the country, covering an area of 9,600,000 square kilometres. Having the world’s second-largest economy and a population of over 1.4 blion, China has more than 1,000 equestrian clubs, stud farms and racetracks across the country, with over 10 million authentic horse lovers. Due to this, the horse industry in China has won worldwide support, attracting
attention from all over the globe, and has enjoyed rapid development. Over more than ten decades, generally acclaimed as an excellent breed, the Arabian horse has made lasting impressions on Chinese horse owners. As per statistics, there are more than 2000 Arabian Horses in China in our day, primarily imported horses mainly from America and Europe. An international Arabian Horse Festival 2023 was scheduled this year to include specimens ranging from Weanlings to Seniors. The show, orchestrated by the China International AH Festival Organization, was held in Shenyang, northeast China, at the famous Shengjing International Equestrian Club.

A FEW CONCLUDING REMARKS ON CIAHF 2023
Besides the Arabian horse show, the festival program included various events such as festivities, conferences, and excursions to local tourist attractions. The festival was a tremendous opportunity to celebrate the beauty and magnificence of purebred Arabian horses in a unique atmosphere, providing a platform for breeders and owners to meet and show their horses, share knowledge, and cooperate in this field. The support and involvement from the United Arab Emirates, represented by the Emirates Arabian Horse Society (EAHS), in organizing the China International Arabian Horse Festival 2023 was critical and crucial. Earlier in June 2023, Sheikh Zayed bin Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, Vice Chairman of the Emirates Arabian Horse Society (EAHS), and Mohammed Al Harbi, Director-General of the EAHS, had received a delegation from the Chinese Arabian Horse Association. During the meeting,
AHM | 58
the Chinese delegation could learn about the UAE’s leading experience in Arabian horse care and offering high-quality services to owners, breeders and exhibitors. They also learnt about the various local and international events and competitions hosted by the UAE under the guidance and support of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of the Presidential Court, who is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the EAHS. Through the UAE’s extensive experience in Arabian horse breeding and management, China can strengthen and improve the breeding and show industry through international competitions, auctions, forums, and exhibitions dedicated exclusively to Arabian horses. There is always room for international cooperation. There fore, it is always a good idea to provide incentives and support to those who, locally and globally, are committed to the preservation and promotion of the Arabian horse.

In their capacity of Ringmaster and Collecting Ringmaster, respectively, Dr Gian Paolo Teobaldelli and Mr Gian Carlo Soresini from Italy. The show got comments both in English by Mr Erik Blaak from The Netherlands and in Italian by Miss Giorgia Arrigoni from Italy. Arabian Essence from Italy provided the results. Twists and climaxes of the show were caught by the lenses of two highly gifted
Italian female photographers, Mrs Paola Petix and Mrs Sunita Sassudelli. he videos Michel Reboulaz makes go around the world, and despite his young age, he is one of the most talented video makers today. Coming from Italy, Michel obtains a degree in Construction Engineering to follow in his paternal footsteps. However, when the whole shebang in his professional course appears to follow a predetermined trajectory, he got introduced in the Arabian Horse sector and he created his own name...As all this has begun, Michel tells us the whole story in this delightful interview.
Who is Michel Reboulaz, exactly?
I was born in 1989 in a small town in the mountains of the north-west of Italy, where I grew up until 19 years old when I moved to Turin to start my university studies in construction engineering to get a degree that would enable me to work in the same field of competitions of my father. It is hard to say I was a full-time student as I would spend considerable time on extracurricular activities like organizing events for university students and sometimes shooting and editing videos for fun. At that time, I never considered videography a career option, proAHM | 114
bably because my place could not offer me enough opportunities or maybe because the engineering career looked more promising for a stable future. After my master’s and specialized degrees, I continued to work and get hands-on experience organizing events. In the meantime, my then-girlfriend, Francesca Aragno, was starting the idea of the Show coverage with the creation of Arabian Insider. As she knew of my passion for video editing and my expertise in promoting events, Francesca asked me to join her for the Show coverage of Paris 2016. That was my first time in the business and one of the first contact
AHM | 115
AHM | 116
with horses. I was immediately fascinated by these events and intrigued by the ideas we had in mind for the future. So, we built the official business entity. From that moment, we never stopped travelling and shooting at events and farms around the globe. Lastly, at the beginning of 2021, we separated the roads and I began my solo journey. I am very proud of my accomplishments in these years as I have many farms and trainers located mainly in Europe, America and the Middle East I work with regularly. I spend most of the year travelling alone or in the company of the guys working in the team, Andrea, Paolo, Joel and Nate, with whom, after all these years of sharing experiences and hard work, we are good friends and great collaborators. Can you describe your creative process when making videos? I believe creating a video is an expression of Art, and like all the other forms of Art as painting or acting, it has to give a message. Every video has a different goal or purpose. A videographer has to convey feelings to the viewers through his stylistic choices. I am not metaphorically saying this but in the most practical way. It might be a wedding video, a promo for a new car or a promotional video for an Arabian horse. Each has to be built from the ground, starting with the right music that fits and enhances the mood, followed by studying a structure that keeps the viewers attracted and leaves them with the desired feeling by the end of it. That is what I try to get in every production I make. I strive to give it a personality, not just a sequence of clips with a music track in the background. Speaking about, for instance, a promotional video for a horse, I first check all the footage and, depending on many aspects, like the place and the weather conditions of the shooting, the energy of the horse and his main qualities, I go to find the sound and visual
elements that will craft his very personalized video. In your opinion, what are the most critical elements of a good video? I think a good video is a video that can emotionally touch you The style can also be quite simple, but it has to tell a story or convey a message. In particular, I aim to capture all the moments in the most natural way when
people are experiencing situations of happiness, stress, and excitement. With a mix of the appropriate soundtrack and the original audio, the viewers, in particular the client, will be able to live again the feeling of that moment.
AHM | 117
How do you come up with ideas for new video projects? Sometimes, the ideas come from inputs of everyday life. It could be a song or a video with a particular style. So, the team members and I save it and keep it in mind for the first project that fits that mood. For example, sometimes, it can have a positive result to transform and adapt external concepts to our horse world, trying to diversify the productions. Usually, before the events, we de-
AHM | 118
velop ideas and soundtracks for every client to have guidelines on what we should get during the shooting, or the projects might be directly created emphasizing a great moment that happened. What are some of the challenges you face when creating videos? The greatest challenge always comes from shooting with living animals and depending on their performance. Sometimes, we
AHM | 119
can wake up before sunrise to join the perfect location with the ideal light, but then the horse is not in his best mood, so nothing happens. It’s natural and understandable, but that’s why, through the years, I have understood that the simpler, the better. The more we try to add around the horse, the more we risk not having his better performance. What do you enjoy most and the least about your job? I honestly, totally love my job as a videographer. It has now been more than eight years that I have worked almost full time, most of the year not stopping even at the AHM | 120
weekends, but despite this, I still wake up in the morning intrigued by the daily projects to follow. The more a video takes shape, the more I get excited to keep editing until I have it ready, sometimes also if I’m in front of the computer for ten or more hours. I also love the possibility of travelling around the world and discovering the lifestyles of different places and people. There is, however, a flip side to both of these points because sometimes the amount of work requires me to endure marathons of
AHM | 121
days or weeks sitting at my PC and months far away from home. Can you tell us about any projects you worked on that were particularly demanding or rewarding? My most demanding and rewarding moments are the big shows like Paris, Katara, US Nationals, Scottsdale, Menton, etc. We usually follow 20-30 horses at these events and produce 10-20 show videos for different farms. Days at the shows are crazy busy, and nights are filled with little sleep. In the second round, we have to produce all the videos after the show has ended. For instance, in situations like US Nationals or Scottsdale, the contenders’ videos, open houses
AHM | 122
AHM | 123
in farms, promotional videos for the Show, all of them they can take us over a month to complete. But again, if we flip the coin, on the other side, we have the immense personal reward of succeeding in following and producing, at our best, each project and having all the clients satisfied and spending a nice word on our work. How do you stay motivated and inspired? Most of the year, my rhythm of work is insane, and the number of hours spent at the
AHM | 124
computer each day may exceed 10, sometimes even 15 hours. In those moments, what keeps me going is this genuine passion for video editing. Most of the time, it is like it used to be in the past playing games. I want to keep going until I can, because I’m actually having fun. Once the video is ready, I watch it again a few more times, then again after sending it to the client and then again in the next few days. I find it bizarrely satisfying to see the finished product after spending days imagining it and creating it. As a cherry on
AHM | 125
AHM | 126
top of this, receiving appreciation from the clients for my work makes me feel wholly fulfilled. Especially when I know I have created something unique for them to keep as an everlasting memory for themselves and those they care about. Money is important. It’s a nice boost. But it’s not always the strongest motivation. Also, if there is no economic compensation because I’m working on a video that is a gift for making something nice for a friend or a special occasion, I feel the same usual motivation that pushes me to do my best. What has been the evolution of your video maker career over the years? Which commitments do you have at the moment? The first and most important point has been learning how to shoot and show the Arabian horses at their best angles. It took me not less than 5-6 years to understand what we were discussing. The reason for producing videos in this business is to promote the horses and show them in an even better light, so every clip must be chosen between the many good ones to have a video combining the best ones. Besides that, I want every production to become increasingly elaborate and cinematic, trying to improve the level step by step. As a result, the hours of editing for every video are constantly increasing. Because of this, I feel the direction is to have fewer productions but with a more articulated storyline and style. How can potential clients reach out to you? What’s your promise to them? I am open to working with new clients if they are looking for engaging projects. My strong point (and probably my curse) is that I take every project deeply to heart, so it doesn’t matter whether or not you are an old or new client, well-known or “small” name, I will always work with the same passion and refine it personally to give to the client something that I’m proud of.
Where do you see yourself, say, in ten years? What are your hopes and dreams for the future? I will find it hard to maintain my current work pace or travel habits in ten years. I see myself having a family and dedicating a considerable amount of my time to it. So rather than long periods of travelling and large numbers of small projects, I might focus on a few ones for clients who want to work on innovative productions. I think the incredible places the horse lovers own around the globe are and will keep being very generous sets for always more exciting movies. In the coming years, I also see myself trying to create various new personal projects in new areas not concerning the horses. Without a doubt, I remain committed to improving and nourishing my passion for video production!

J
onas Salzmann has been judging international competitions for a few years, applying his knowledge of the Arabian breed and considerable practical experience to his evaluations at the shows. After several years of working for Bait Al Arab, Kuwait State Stud as stable manager, we are interviewing Jonas this time as a judge for the Winter edition 2023 - and getting a taste of his involvement in judging – it was sheer pleasure for us on the AHM team.
Who is Jonas Salzmann, exactly? Please, Jonas, introduce yourself eloquently to our international community. My name is Jonas Salzmann. I am from Germany, from a town called Göttingen, in Lower Saxony. For the past ten years, I have been living in Kuwait. Where does your passion for Arabian horses spring from? Were your parents also passionate about Arabian horses? I am fortunate to come from a family of horse enthusiasts. Since my early childhood, I have always been fascinated by animals and horses. I have spent all my free time taking riding lessons or being around my family’s horses. My family has always been passionate about horses and horse riding. Last but not least, my cousin started breeding Arabian horses and introduced me to the breed.
Tell us about your early steps in this industry. When did you start working as a manager for Bait Al Arab in Kuwait? What are your responsibilities today? Having spent most of my time around Arabian horses as a child and in my teenage years, it was clear to me that after finishing my education and graduation, I would want to work with horses. Working for different farms and stables taught me more about horse breeding, conditioning, and training. I gained experience working for some farms in both Europe and the Middle East. In 2013, I started to work for Bait Al Arab – Kuwait State Stud as a stable manager, primarily ensuring proper care of the horses, including feeding, grooming, training, breeding and other duties. Bait Al Arab – Kuwait State Stud is managed by Sheikha Sarah Fahad Al Sabah, the General Manager of Bait Al Arab and Assistant Undersecretary of the Amiri Diwan. The breeding program is based on Straight Egyptian Arabians. What made you want to become a show judge for Arabian horses at some point? If someone is primarily a good breeder, do you think that person will also be a good judge? Since the Arabian horse has been a passion for my entire life, I think becoming a judge was an important step to contribute to its future. As jud-

ges, we must act responsibly towards the breed. New breeders and horse owners need to learn from the decisions made by judges and given points. This is why it is crucial to have judges who know what to look for when assessing a horse, pointing out both its strengths and weaknesses. Having experience as a breeder, horse owner, and rider is a huge advantage when becoming a judge. You must have that hands-on experience and general knowledge about horses.
functional correctness in contemporary Arabian horses? The Arabian horse originated as a war horse for the Bedouins. As a horse engaged in battles, it had to be strong and tough with excellent conformation to stay sound. Besides the type and elegance, which are the main points that differentiate the Arabian horse from any other breed, we shouldn’t forget that functionality and good conformation are as crucial and need to be considered when making breeding decisions.
What specific preparation did you get to become a judge? I became a National judge in 2017. Before that, I attended several lectures and seminars about horse evaluation and conformation. I learned a lot by listening and learning from experienced judges and breeders, talking about different horses and their strong and weak points. In 2022, I passed my final exams and became an ECAHO B judge.
What particular skills are necessary to become an accountable judge in front of the public? I believe that general experience, knowledge, integrity, honesty and professionalism are the most essential skills a judge should have.
Jonas, what sets Arabian horses apart from other breeds, in your opinion? How do you tackle the concepts of beauty and

Which system of judging at shows do you prefer? Why? I have judged both the points system and the comparative system. I cannot say I have a preferred judging system. Judges use all the methods to rank the horses in their classes and find the best horses. In my opinion, all judging

On a personal level, one of the highlights for me was judging the All Nations Cup in Aachen in 2023. This is a show that I had already watched with my family as a child. It was an honour and a great memory to judge this show. What do you think the future holds for the Arabian breed? I am confident that the Arabian horse breed can have a bright future as a horse for many different disciplines. Whether it is the show, pleasure riding, endurance or many other sports, the Arabian is the perfect partner for it. Several initiatives are needed to promote the Arabian breed for these disciplines and to ensure its future as a versatile breed. Jonas, do you do anything outside the Arabian horse industry? Most of my time is spent around horses. Besides

P
erfumes have been a major cultural component of the Arab world throughout history. Their purpose was originally to serve the Gods in the Mediterranean basin and the Middle East, and fumigations were used to communicate with the gods by the ascension of praise and prayers to honour them. Today, many Middle Eastern peoples have stopped this ancient tradition. They consider perfumes as divine gifts for human pleasure, while fumigations are often used to chase away evil spirits during prayer recitations. Many people cultivate this way of life in their homes where sweet smells fill the rooms; perfume burners are placed in furniture, and sprinklers are installed, thus encouraging this way of life. Whenever guests arrive at the doorstep, welcome them with the best scent. It’s a warm gesture. Fragrances often emanate from the most personal or private parts of each house, mainly the bedroom for exalting the romantic relationship, scents from the culture of the home often revealing the tastes of the loved one, just as many secrets of the master of alcoves towards the lover. The scent, accompanied by oils and balms, is active in a ritual of seduction stimulating desire, certain essences renowned for their aphrodisiac virtues. Many know the virtues of Musk used in the preparations of love potions. This very odorous product scents the bodies and contributes to the voluptuousness of romantic relationships, an erotic charge attributed to scents and perfumes. The aroma of cooking preparations, with the most exquisite perfumes, is extraordinarily abundant in oriental countries. The oriental cuisine is known for being very olfactory and tasty, incorporating strong spices with aromatic herbs in savoury and sweet dishes. The rose has been praised and sung by the most renowned Arab poets since the 8th century as the symbol

of beauty and spirituality, widely cultivated in the Moroccan valleys passing through Damascus and the valleys of the Sultanate of Oman. This flower dear to the hearts of Orientals does not exclude being accompanied by other emblematic flowers such as Orange blossom, Saffron and Jasmine. Do not forget that the profession of the perfumer is highly appreciated throughout Arab society. This artisan is mainly installed near a mosque and the centre of the city. In his shop, all kinds of products are available, either for cosmetic or medicinal virtues, a variety of spices, aromatic herbs, precious tree resins harvested in autumn after summer where the bark is the thinnest mouthful of sap, ambergris (sperm whale secretion) collected in the region of Yemen and Oman, myrrh (Commiphora Myrrha), without neglecting the floral waters, famous perfume compositions - Nadd, Ramikk, Andghâliyya.

This year’s program was packed with horse events and shows, allowing viewers to experience first-hand a taste of the “Arabian Dream”. With its international appeal and magnitude, Verona Fieracavalli provided the perfect backdrop for this morphology event. Participants and spectators came in droves far and wide, creating a diverse and vibrant atmosphere. People from different cultures and backgrounds gathered to celebrate stunning Arabian horses and immersed AHM | 212
themselves in the enchanting equestrian world. Arabian Dream 2023 was meticulously planned by Arabian Horse Magazine and its team, led by Gianluca Martino, from the state-of-the-art facilities, arena setup, and professional booths to the organization of the competitions. The event also included various activities and painting exhibitions related to the breed, offering us the valuable opportunity to learn about the history of Arabian horses, interact with breeders and
owners, and witness breath-taking performances by skilled handlers. It was an unforgettable experience for everyone involved, participants and spectators alike. Therefore, we on the Arabian Horse Magazine team would like to thank all the extraordinary people joining in the Arabian Dream 2023 at the 125th Fieracavalli Verona: the judges, the breeders, the owners, the handlers, DCs, ring-masters, the talented photographers, the wonderful sponsors, especially H.E. Sheikha Fatima Al Nahyan of Al Shiraa Ara-
bians who beautifully donated the prize-money for the Futurity Foals Championship, and Mrs Antonia Bautista as the manager of the event. Furthermore, we want to thank Abhaa Arabians for contributing the prize money for the medals assigned at the Arabitalia competition and the thousands of friends and hardworking ones behind the scenes. We know that you are indeed so many. Thank you so much. We couldn’t have done this without your help! AHM | 213

Zimbabwe is a small landlocked country immediately north of South Africa, well known for its natural flora and wildlife. With a warm sub-equatorial climate, it is not surprising that agriculture and tourism are the country’s primary economic sources. The horse community is small in Zimbabwe, with horses used predominantly in sporting disciplines such as dressage, show jumping, cross country, and polo. The Arabian horse industry in Zimbabwe is even smaller and only recently beginning to pick up traction. The Arab Horse Society of Zimbabwe, the governing Arabian Studbook Organization in the country, was established in 1980, with W.A.H.O. status obtained in 1996 at the Conference in Abu Dhabi. Between 2002 and 2023, the Arab Horse Society of Zimbabwe has been utterly dormant due to economic turmoil and years of inflation throughout the state. Over these decades, many breeders immigrated, disbanded their local breeding programs, and took their horses with them, leaving the breeders’ community almost wiped out. About an hour’s drive southeast of Zimbabwe’s capital city of Harare in the farming district of Marondera, nestled in a valley and surrounded by beautiful natural balancing rock formations, lies one of only

Matt Harwin at the Namibian Arabian Championships in 2022 three Arabian stud farms in the country to date, Harwin Arabians. Established by mother Bridget and her son Matt Harwin, the stud started as most small-scale Arabian studs do in this region by breeding Arabian derivative horses first and then graduating to purebreds. The first stallion, Mount-SharShar Shikari (Mount SharShar Silver x Syferpan Irish Rose), was rescued at the dispersal of a fellow local stud farm. Mount-SharShar Shikari was a snow-white old English/ Crabbet bred stallion of the classic English type, bred by the Venter family in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. He was well known in Zimbabwe as a sire of champion children’s riding ponies who outshone in show jumping and dressage. His most successful offspring was Starwood Shandy Briar, a palomino part-bred Arabian mare that outperformed in children’s A-grade show-jumping and once qualified for the Youth Olympics. Upon Mount-SharShar Shikari’s acquisition, he was promptly bred to an Anglo-Arabian mare that was

also purchased from Starwood Valley Arabians, Starwood KY, who was sired by the Zimbabwean National Champion stallion, Minhab KY Maktub (Kyala x Hammad Jasmeyn). The result of this combination was a beautiful, grey filly, Sandylands Shara Bint Shikari, which marked the beginning of Harwin Arabians. Shortly afterwards, the imported straight Russian stallion, TR Veritas (Nariadni x Muscalean), bred by Taylor Ranch Arabians in Utah, USA, joined our stud. TR Veritas is a direct result of combining the blood of the two classic, well-known Russian stallions, Nariadni (Nabeg x Nariadnaia) and Muscat (Salon x Malpia). He is also the only living son of Nariadni in the entire African conti-
nent. He quickly settled into his home and shortly became my equine soulmate. We spent many days training in the dressage arena or enjoying one another’s company in the paddock. At this point on time, purebred Arabian mares were almost impossible to come by in the country. Regarding myself, I had just graduated from high school with plans to immigrate to England to study at the Agricultural College of Writtle in Chelmsford, Essex, where I then graduated with an honours degree in Equine Science. Due to my absence, all breeding on the farm came to a complete standstill. After graduating, I worked in one of the leading Equine Insurance firms in London before deciding to move back home

to Zimbabwe in 2021.The first purebred mare, an exotic Bey Shah granddaughter, FS Tallulah (Simply Red x Tai Bey Brittney), was imported from South Africa and joined our stud in 2021. I have always had a long-standing fascination with horses produced from classic ‘Americana’ Arabian breeding as Ruminaja Ali, Bey Shah, Bask, and Versace, all of which appear in this lovely mare’s pedigree. FS Tallulah was immediately bred to TR Veritas. The result is the beautifully conformed chestnut filly, MH Viviana, who was the 2023 recipient of the WAHO Trophy for Zimbabwe. MH Viviana has all the best characteristics of her sire and her dam, obtaining her sire’s good solid, all-around conformation, size and movement and her dam’s exotic head. What more could you ask for in a new breeder’s first purebred foal? At the time, I encountered the issue of not having a registration facility to enrol future purebred foals into. So, I set out to resurrect the then-sleeping Society and recruit members. As a result, the

Arab Horse Society of Zimbabwe is once again an active WAHO member in good standing and has a ‘family-oriented’ small membership of just under 20 members. We recently opened our doors to the international Arabian fraternity when we hosted stud tours as part of the Zimbabwean Leg of the Southern African Arabian Horse Championships, which is a new tri-national halter and ridden initiative between the three Southern African WAHO registering nations of Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. In 2022, along with my mother, Bridget, we added two further broodmares to our program, one a 4th generation Zimbabwean bred black mare, Khwareno Ghala (Tehama Ali x Khwareno Rakhshanda), whose sire is a double Ruminaja Ali grandson, with both his sire, Ali El Din (Ruminaja Ali x Heritage Memory) and his dam, Alis Pride (Ruminaja Ali x Hjh Country Pride) being respectively the son and the daughter of the iconic stallion. Khwareno Ghala’s dam, Khwareno Rakhshanda (Marrakesh Ruaal x Valzani Carlita), was a successful local halter mare in the 1990s, winning numerous titles such as 1993 Gold Purebred Zimbabwean Arabian Yearling, 1993 Zimbabwean Reserve Champion Arabian and 1996 Zimbabwean Champion Purebred Arabian 3-year-old. A pioneering Zimbabwean breeder, Connie Hull, bred Khwareno Ghala at her Khware-
no Stud in Bulawayo, founded in 1960 with the first-ever imports of Zimbabwean Arabians. In September 2022, we attended the Namibian Open Arabian Horse Championships as honorary guests of the Namibian Arabian Society’s President, and there we saw and fell in love with the Polish mare, Czartana (Ganges x Czartawa), who was bred by Janow Podlaski and imported from Poland to Namibia. We knew we had to have her. So we purchased Czartana from our good friends, Dr Barbara Scholz and Dr Henning Du Toit of Charlottenburg Arabians and imported her into Mount Shar-Shikari (Mount-SharShar Silver x Syferpan Irish Rose) AHM | 230

Zimbabwe in December 2022. Czartana is an impressive solid all-around powerhouse of a mare with clean limbs, a sturdy body, good height, and great potential under saddle. She is the first-ever Polish-born Arabian to step foot on Zimbabwean soil and is being worked under saddle. She will make her show ring debut in Zimbabwe at our National Arabian Championships in April 2024. The mother and daughter duo Shania Shania (Tehama Na Sidaqa x Khwareno Ursula) and Shania Shelina (Tehama Ali x Shania Shania) joined our program in May 2023 on a lease basis from a former local breeder. Both have a combination of Egyptian, Old English, and Spanish bloodlines. Shania Shania is a paternal half-sister to the Zimbabwean-bred and born 2017 World Champion mare, Tehama Ballalina (Tehama Na Sidaqa x JJ Shai Majestic Queen).
AHM | 231
We have always wanted to incorporate Tehama Ballalina’s bloodline into our program in some shape or form - and since she was exported as a weanling filly in 2002, she left no progeny behind. The closest best thing was to add a sibling of hers. Shania Shania and Shania Shelina have produced lovely foals for other breeders, and we look forward to seeing what they will generate for us in our breeding program. Both will be bred to our stallion, TR Veritas, later this year. In April 2023, Tallulah, our foundation mare, passed away. Being the first purebred Arabian mare, I was devastated by the loss. A terrible loss for us to bounce back from due to the size of our stud and our program being relatively still young. In June 2023, we added a South African imported daughter of hers, FS Simone, sired by Jasper MC (WH Justice x Divina Pasion (by El Nabila B), bred by Francisca Strydom in Pretoria, South Africa. She is a highly typey, grey mare featuring the traits of her well-known grandsire’s family. She has a modern pedigree in which legendary superstars such as| 232 WH Justice, El Nabila B and Marwan Al AHM
Shaqab appear next to each other. She joins her sister, MH Viviana, sired by TR Veritas (Nariadni x Muscalean), to continue their mother’s line and legacy with us. FS Simone is presently in foal for February 2024! In Zimbabwe, importing semen, whether chilled or frozen to breed with, comes with its challenges, as we get taxed hefty amounts on it, and then you run the risk of your mare not taking it. A good breeding stallion and an appropriate selection of mares are of utmost importance here. We have selected our mares carefully to complement and breed well to our stallion, all from diverse bloodlines. But they should prove as worthwhile outcrosses to TR Veritas’ Russian breeding. So far, the decision is living up to its expectation! Our new foal crop for 2023/2024 is already everything we could hope for, with our first foal being born a few weeks ago, a striking dark bay colt by TR Veritas (Nariadni x Muscalean), out of Khwareno Ghala (Tehama Ali x Khwareno Rakhshanda).
