Marco Den Ouden has been in the hospitality industry since the age of 12. From kitchen, room management, and revenue management, to becoming General Manager at the age of 23 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, he has seen it all. He has launched 50 restaurants over the years and worked at leading resorts in various destinations before moving to this island where he heads the Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain Resort and Spa.

Food plays an important role in his life. A proud owner of over 1500 cookbooks, his passion for food is evident in the restaurants that now decorate the gorgeous grounds of the resort. We sat down with him to uncover some of his experiences heading the luxury five-star resort, his love for food, and more.

In your opinion, what makes a restaurant special?

There are a lot of factors that make restaurants special. The most important ones are that they offer something unique with a personal touch. A passionate chef who believes in cooking with love and values his ingredients creates something of a masterpiece which only after tasting, does he put on the table.

What are your thoughts on Bahrain’s F&B sector?

We’re very fortunate to have great products and a world of ingredients available to us in Bahrain which creates an opportunity to produce great food here. Culturally speaking, the people in Bahrain are equally passionate and interested in food and beverages - whether it’s cooking at home or dining out. From a business perspective, it’s an advantage because when people care about the food, it’s easier to explain our food to them, no matter where they’ve originated.

Bahrain, on the one side, has a strong history of food and hospitality. On the other hand, there are a lot of new cultures and cuisines creating a diversity of flavours.

In the context of operating a resort, it’s all about creating little booklets of experiences by introducing these varieties of flavours and cuisines to our offerings. It’s important that when people visit the resort, they go to different restaurants that provide unique experiences to them.

What are your favourite dishes served at the resort’s many restaurants?

Since I’ve been very involved in the restaurant concepts and in the tastings,

it’s difficult to pick my favourites from the lot. For instance, if you love Italian food, the diversity of the cuisine itself is massive and so we like Sicily as an example which inspires our restaurant, Due Mari. Sicily has had four periods of dominance. What’s unique about Sicilians is that they hold onto their traditional recipes. If you drive to different villages, you will find completely different menus. However, their relationship with food is what inspires Due Mari. It is interesting to note that authentic Sicilian food has an Arabic influence to it. It’s perhaps the only restaurant in Bahrain serving the cuisine and it seems to be suiting the people here very well too.

How do you ensure your restaurants always meet the highest standards of quality and guest experiences?

I take myself out of the equation, look at the space, and try to understand what our guests are experiencing at different spots of the resort. If it’s a transitional area, are people feeling too rushed out of there? If so, how can the space be rendered more comfortable? We have also used colour schemes in line with the ocean and the landscape.

We apply the same principles to the restaurants. For instance, Zahrat Al Fayrouz has a slightly darker setting, making it an ideal dinner spot. On the other hand, Due Mari which is closer to the sea and has a lot more light coming into the restaurant, the vibe is brighter and starkly different from Zahrat. Ultimately, it’s about creating good concepts that allow guests to want to spend more time eating and enjoying themselves at each of the restaurants.

What are your favourite places to eat in Bahrain?

Clay is one of my favourite spots to eat. They have a great playlist, a good team, and an energy that makes you enjoy your time at the restaurant. They serve authentic food prepared by talented chefs. I also quite enjoy Chong Chan Ting in Adliya which serves delicious Chinese food. You would find items that are typically served only in China which makes it a unique concept here from authenticity to freshness of food. n

The majestic resort sits along the west coast of the island with views of the endless sea, meandering water channels, restaurants catering to different tastes, and a great range of amenities that make for a memorable weekend getaway.

A few kilometres away from Zallaq’s Bilaj Al Jazayer and the Bahrain International Circuit, the resort introduces you to quintessential Bahraini depictions - from the three pearls at the entrance and the Gahwa served at the lobby to the artworks that symbolise Bahrain’s culture and people. Not to mention, the views of the open sea from different locations at the resort, including every one of its 196 rooms.

We began the relaxing staycation quite literally, at the relaxation hub of the resort - Talise Spa. A luxurious, award-winning rejuvenation centre, Talise Spa, with its calming aroma filling the air, spoils you with an array of signature treatments. Easily spend half of your day at Talise with a session at one of their 13

treatment rooms, designed for singles and couples, a femaleonly hammam facility and separate gyms for men and women. The facility also has a beauty salon and a temperature-controlled swimming pool. Your ultimate self-care routine is accomplished at one destination!

After a nourishing hour at the spa, we checked out the infinity pool. Overlooking the sea, the infinity pool is set at an elevation and is the coldest of the five pools at the resort with temperatures of 22 degrees. You could gaze into the vast view of the sea along with a panoramic perspective of the entire resort. At lunchtime, we dined at the resort’s Sicilian restaurant, Due Mari. Alongside the canal (which offers a gorgeous view of the passing Abra Boats, transporting you to a Sicilian diner with a waterfront view), Due Mari is a charming dining venue with an intimate atmosphere and a very friendly staff.

Chef Lorenzo’s passion for his craft is evident the moment he begins to describe and match the many dishes on his menu to your liking. From the Arancini to the Risotto Primavera, the seafood salad and the delicious Ravioli - it was a feast of flavours.

A special shout-out to the Arancini, a popular Sicilian street food, which Chef Lorenzo creates with his home-style recipe. Street food always remains in your memories and this dish, created to perfection, did just that! Chef Lorenzo’s special recipe is a crispy ball of fried rice mixed with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese - and was the most irresistible plate of fine Italian food we’ve ever tried. We will most certainly be going back for the Arancini.

Apart from Due Mari, the resort has six other dining locations including the bar, 25 | 50; Majlis Al Fijri, where you can enjoy delectable pastries both local and international; Obab Al Bahar, which serves Arabic, Indian, Pan-Asian, and European cuisine; Al Sama, a watering hole specialising in Levantine and Mediterranean flavours; Osoul, the beachside dining venue and Zahrat Al Fayrouz, the Levantine restaurant that brings an array of delicious flavours from the region.

After a hearty lunch and the Sun descending in sight, it was time for our favourite part of the day - a hike up to the beach! The white sand met the clear blue water while reflecting the golden setting Sun. For adrenaline junkies, several beach activities are available - motorboats, kayaks, and paddle boards, to name a few.

The resort’s other offerings include a 36-seater private cinema, a Kids’ Club for the little ones to engage in interesting activities, and two ballrooms that each accommodate up to 160 people with spacious outdoor gardens to host events.

Our experience at the Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain was nothing short of relaxing and whether you reside in Bahrain or are travelling into the Kingdom, a stay at the gorgeous property is recommended. Who decided?

The winning restaurants for Bahrain’s Best Restaurants 2023 were decided by 74 experienced and distinguished judges best qualified to know what makes a restaurant great - leaders of Bahrain’s 5 and premium 4 Star hotels, and other hospitality experts (see pages 32 - 42 for list of all judges).

To our judges, we simply asked them to recommend their five favourite restaurants in Bahrain. We offered no suggestions, categories, price ranges, order of preference, or anything else. The only rule was judges could not recommend any restaurant connected to their own company. Voting was fully transparent - every judge can see the restaurants voted for by every other judge.

By following the above method, we ensure the awards are fair, unbiased, and authentic.

Of the restaurants voted for, we discovered 20 clear winners, and a further 18 restaurants considered worthy of special recommendation. We congratulate all the restaurants and the people behind them. Their hard work and dedication are truly appreciated and we hope they will continue to serve Bahrain's culinary scene with excellence for many years to come. n

A Few Observations

 Winning restaurants were decided by the leaders of Bahrain's 5 and premium 4 Star hotels, plus a number of other carefully selected food and hospitality experts.

 Judges were not allowed to vote for any restaurant connected to their own company.

 Voting among judges was fully transparent.

 Of the top 20 restaurants, 5 specialise in Japanese cuisine.

 After Japanese, the most popular cuisine among the top 20 is Italian (3 restaurants)

 Clay was the most-voted restaurant among the judges.

 4 of the 20 top restaurants - CUT by Wolfgang Puck, Masso, Mirai, and My Café were among the 12 winners of the previous Bahrain’s Best Restaurants Awards.

 The previous awards recognised 12 winners plus 28 highly recommended restaurants compared to 20 winners plus 18 highly recommended today. The reason for the difference in numbers is that results depend entirely on the judges' voting patterns.

To our judges, we simply asked them to vote for their five favourite restaurants in Bahrain. We offered no suggestions, categories, price ranges, order of preference, or anything else.

The only rule was judges could not vote for any restaurant connected to their own company. Voting was fully transparentevery judge can see the restaurants voted for by every other judge.

Executive Chef Leonardo Di Clemente talks to Bahrain

Confidential about his roots in Italy, his passion for food, and creating unique dining experiences for guests at the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay.

Leonardo Di Clemente is the Executive Chef of the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. Coming from a family of farmers in Puglia, South of Italy which is famous for its Mediterranean cuisine, he learned at a young age, to appreciate the importance of fresh produce and the best ingredients – sparking his passion for food. He later worked at a pastry shop with his brother and at age 14, he travelled around Italy to learn more about the cuisines of different regions. In 2000, he moved to London to join Four Seasons and has been with the brand ever since taking his craft across the world.

How do you ensure your restaurants always meet the highest standards of quality?

At Four Seasons, we serve with the highest standards of hospitality and we always aim to exceed the expectations of our guests. I work with everyone in our team diligently from researching to testing and training to ensure standards. We source our ingredients from the best local and international suppliers, guaranteeing the freshness and quality of our products.

In your opinion, what makes a restaurant special?

It’s the DNA. A lot of restaurants mix and match and don’t specialize in anything. Whenever we create something, I always tell my team that we have to stick to the concept’s DNA. I think this is the most vital element for a restaurant to succeed.

What are some of the upcoming projects you’ve planned at the hotel?

We are going to launch our new restaurant 180° by the Beach in Autumn which will be a dining destination featuring elevated Arabic cuisine. Guests will be able to experience authentic specialties by our talented oriental culinary team amid the stunning atmosphere of Bahrain Bay.

What is your personal favourite dish?

My mom’s Parmigiana. She makes it with artichokes that we grew instead of the traditional recipe featuring eggplants. She always makes it every time we visit Italy, layering artichokes with mozzarella, tomatoes, basil, and parmesan.

What are your thoughts on Bahrain’s restaurant sector?

I have been in Bahrain for two years and I know that the restaurant industry is very competitive. There are quite a few restaurants including CUT by Wolfgang Puck at our hotel, that has received several recognitions. I believe that the increased competition level will push the boundaries to craft new concepts, motivate everyone to be more creative and drive more sources for local ingredients.

What are the three dishes you recommend guests to try at your restaurant?

At Bay View Lounge, I recommend guests try out mezzes, the best selections in town. Our Pinsa is also unique – the dough is made from a traditional recipe in Napoli, and it’s light and easy to digest. For dessert, I recommend the Cardamom Pistachio Lingotto.

What are your favourite places to eat in Bahrain?

I enjoy visiting David’s Stir Fry Crazy with my family. It’s a cosy and authentic venue with good quality food.

If you were allowed to keep just one ingredient from your kitchen with you, what would it be?

Olive oil. Whenever I travel home [Italy], I bring my olive oil with me. n

A Peak into the Charming Parisian Bistro in Bahrain

Bahrain Confidential explored the flavours of France served at Go Bistro, The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain’s latest pop-up concept.

The Parisian bistro scene is quite popular for a simple reason - they offer the comfort of a casual, homely atmosphere where classic French recipes can be enjoyed. Offering a peak into the charming dining culture on the island is The Ritz-Carlton Bahrain’s latest pop-up concept, Go Bistro.

We had the pleasure of visiting the pop-up, which opened its doors this May. Overlooking the beach, surrounded by white sands and a gentle breeze, the vibe transports you to a quintessential Parisian bistro. The staff welcomed us with a plateful of baguettes and mushroom cakes (that surprised us with its savoury flavours).

The pop-up restaurant offers “Cuisine de Maison” or “Comfort Home Cooking” with each ingredient creating a fusion of different tastes. We learned that the dishes at Go Bistro constantly evolve; combinations switch, new sauces are introduced, and ingredients are played around with. The team prides itself on being consistent when it comes to change.

The mind behind the incredible menu, Chef Alexis Knecht from Alsace France, believes that food narrates the best stories when traditional preparations are combined with local flavours. “Finding the best of both worlds is what excites us in the kitchen. It’s the reason we keep innovating and discovering new flavours for the guests to enjoy,” he said.

When the Grilled Octopus Salad was served, Chef Alexis, with his passion for storytelling, informed us that the fresh octopus was brought from Spain (grilled to create a crispy exterior and a soft core) while the very juicy tomatoes originated in Bahrain. Accompanying the salad was the smooth, buttery Foie Gras served along with a perfectly baked Brioche.

The rather lavish Lobster Thermidor was plated majestically, with spinach leaves and creamy mushrooms - each bite bursting with a rich taste. The side of Mussels a la Provençale was a promising addition to the very filling main course.

We will let you in on a secret! Ask the very friendly staff about the delicious Fondue Bourguignon. This off-the-menu dish is a must-try preparation by Chef Alexis and his team, featuring cubed steak pinned into a fondue pot with boiling beef bouillon. From Amarillo Chili and Pesto to Truffle Mushroom, there are several sauces to add that extra flavour while savouring your plate full of beef along with a green salad and a side of potato fries.

Just when we thought we could eat no more, a soft, appetizinglooking San Sebastian Cheesecake landed in front of us, accompanied by a generous serving of Profiteroles Royale. It was impossible to resist spoonful of these decadent desserts.

We highly recommend taking this journey through the charming world of French bistros and the comfort of the delicious cuisine. Go Bistro creates a magical experience, one that we will be going back for next time. The pop-up is open until September of this year. n

With 23 years in the hospitality industry, Chef Picco Alapatt’s culinary journey spans India, the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East. The Executive Chef at The Gulf Hotel Bahrain believes that good food is the key to ultimate happiness and a memorable dining experience. In his third tenure on the island, Chef Picco helms the food and beverage offerings across the hotel with a focus on blending simplicity with creativity.

In your opinion, what makes a restaurant special?

It all starts with good, consistent, quality food. While it’s important to create an overall experience with great service, crafted ambience and perfect location, the key is always to prepare good food which in my humble opinion makes the restaurant special. I truly believe that good food brings peace & ultimate happiness, and I‘m excited to put together a simple yet creative approach to food, offering our guests an excuse to mingle at the table and relish a unique dining experience.

What is your personal favourite dish?

Hailing from India, the land of spices, my personal favourite is Biryani. Although there are many varieties of Biryani, I’d be happy if it has the right elements in the right proportions with an extra touch of Chili to give it the spicy flavour.

How do you ensure your hotel always meets the highest standards of quality?

There is no secret to quality. It’s in the ingredients, the recipes and a team of passionate and qualified chefs who can maintain the quality of food consistently.

What are your thoughts on Bahrain’s restaurant sector?

Bahrain has always catered to the demand of its diners. The Kingdom has come a long way since my last tenure here. One of the things that makes Bahrain’s dining scene so remarkable is its sheer breadth of offering, executed at different levels. The Gulf Hotel is one such example of diversity where 17 restaurants, bars & lounges with varied cuisines handled by native chefs merge under one roof. I’m sure

Bahrain in a few years from now would lay claim to such high-quality representation of traditional, modern, and innovative cuisines from all parts of the globe.

What are three dishes you would recommend guests try at The Gulf Hotel?

At The Gulf Hotel, there are plenty of outstanding dishes that one should never miss, however, if I had to pick just three, they would be the Lamb Shank Massaman Curry at Royal Thai, Carnitas Taco at Margarita Mexicana, and Jojey Kebab at Takht Jamsheed.

If you were allowed to keep just one ingredient from your kitchen with you, what would it be?

It would be garlic. I personally use garlic in most dishes as I believe in its ability to elevate my preparation. In almost every cuisine and culinary style, garlic reigns supreme, due to its deliciousness and its flavour profile that can enhance any dish. n

“A special restaurant is one that can create a unique and memorable dining experience for its customers through a combination of great food, service, ambience, innovation, and consistency,” says Chef Younis.

A big believer in running a kitchen where fun meets creativity, Chef Younis takes charge of keeping his team cheerful, active, and in high spirits. A natural storyteller, he loves sharing humorous anecdotes from his past experiences with his team. By doing so, Chef Younis fosters an environment that is relaxed yet productive - one where everyone feels comfortable expressing themselves creatively while working towards common culinary goals. His approach in the kitchen is all about promoting positivity and camaraderie among team members through laughter and shared experiences.

His simplicity was quite evident when we asked him about the one ingredient he would not let go from his kitchen. His answer was “salt.” In 2002, Chef Younis embarked on his culinary journey, travelling to various countries such as Lebanon, China (Beijing and Shanghai), Belgium, and the United States where he immersed himself in diverse cuisines and cultures. Through these experiences, he gained insights into different culinary techniques and flavour profiles that have helped shape his unique style of cooking today. He continues to explore new trends in gastronomy while staying true to his roots, reflecting his commitment towards lifelong learning within the field of culinary arts.

Having honed his skills at an Asian-fusion seafood restaurant under the guidance of two-Michelin-starred Chef Patron Yves Mattagne, Chef Younis first joined The Diplomat in 2002 and stayed until 2005. He then returned to the five-star hotel for a second stint in 2007, where he has remained ever since. When asked what are three dishes he would recommend at the hotel’s restaurants, Chef Younis responded, “Spicy Korean Beef, the Sushi Menu, and Lobster Spaghetti at Bo.Sabi.” While his personal favourite would be the Korean Short Ribs.

Chef Younis' talent and craft have earned him widespread recognition both within Bahrain and beyond. His impressive culinary journey stands testament to his unwavering passion for creating memorable dining experiences while continuously pushing the boundaries within the field of gastronomy. n

Additionally, the diversity allows me to indulge in myriad flavours, techniques and traditions from around the world, all within a 30-minute drive from anywhere. This cultural tapestry not only satisfies my taste buds but also broadens my understanding and appreciation of different culinary heritages.

What is your personal favourite dish?

Indigo’s Beef SSamJang is my personal favourite because it beautifully represents the essence of the restaurant - contemporary Mediterranean cuisine with a hint of Asian influence. It features tender, succulent beef marinated in a flavorful blend of Korean SSamJang sauce which is a harmonious fusion of savoury, spicy, and slightly sweet flavours.

What are three dishes you would recommend guests try at your restaurant?

There are many dishes I’d recommend but I think the most unmissable would be the Salmon Ceviche, Hammour, and our Chocolate Fondant, which is served as a hot running chocolate centre complemented with cold homemade vanilla ice cream.

What are your favourite places to eat in Bahrain?

Masso, Seoul, Re/ASIAN CUISINE, Fusions by Tala, and Goodness Cafe are some of my favourite dining spots on the island. n

If you’re looking for an appetiser, I would recommend the Pizzafreshly baked crust with homemade sauce and a combination of herbs and spices of your own choice. For the main course, Lamb Chops cooked on a slow flame with garlic butter is a must-try. Finally, the Chicken Machboos, a local favourite, with flavours of Middle Eastern cuisine, long grain Basmati rice cooked with fresh ingredients has to be on your list.

My favourite dining spots on the island are Maki, David's Stir Fry Crazy, and Bushido by Buddha-Bar.

With a passion for food, he found his calling in the restaurant sector, heading one of the unique dining concepts on the island - Gallery 21. We got in touch with Hani to find out more about the experiences Gallery 21 creates for its guests and his journey in the F&B world.

Tell us a little about yourself and your journey to becoming the General Manager of Gallery 21.

I always had the drive to be with people and make them feel good around me in whatever situation. I would describe myself as a high-energy person. After pursuing Hotel Management in Beirut, I didn’t see myself working in a closed space. My leaders and mentors inspired me when I was still a trainee in the hospitality sector. I wanted to achieve the same goals: travel, run restaurants, be involved with entertainment, feel that pressure and thrill at the same time, live within different cultures and lead people to success.

Food and Beverage (F&B) was an easy choice for me. Born and raised in Lebanon, I have always had a close relationship with food and drinks. I needed a dynamic, fast-paced environment that differs every day, depending on the guests or the situation. This, for me, is the thrilling part of the F&B industry and it’s why I enjoy being the General Manager of one of the most iconic concepts on the island.

How do the different concepts at Gallery 21 meet the highest standards of quality and deliver satisfying guest experiences?

Gallery 21 is a multi-specialty hospitality concept, blending inspiring art and incomparable vibes. We provide something for every taste; from international dishes to Arabic fusions with a twist. Set in a unique and breathtaking venue, each area has been custom-designed to offer a diverse set of experiences to our guests - from a classic setting for fine dining to the lounge area with its classic-with-a-modern-touch decor.

Bahrain is a vibrant island; small yet full of happenings. Bahrainis are some of the most welcoming people. While Bab Al Bahrain opens the gateway to discovering tradition, Manama by night reveals its beauty and stunning architecture. There’s a lot to explore along the coastline with water sports and activities. Additionally, the variety of hospitality concepts makes the island an attraction for tourists whether they are visiting with families, solo or for a business trip. The whole island is breathtaking.

What are your favourite places to eat in Bahrain?

Forgive me for being biased while I tell you that my favourite places to eat in Bahrain are Gallery 21, Bushido & Trader Vic’s.

Strong Culinary Roots

As a child, Chef Goh Boon Wah drew inspiration from watching his mother cook in the family’s noodle restaurant. Starting as her little helper in the kitchen, he set out to achieve two goals - one of which was to become Head Chef, a goal he has achieved. The other is to run his own restaurant in the future. Today, Chef Goh leads the kitchen at one of Bahrain’s favourite Japanese restaurants - Bushido by Buddha-Bar. In your opinion, what makes a restaurant special?

Bringing together high-quality food, remarkable service, cleanliness, good value, and a carefully crafted ambience can result in an exceptional, extravagant experience for the customers, making the restaurant the most iconic place.

How do you ensure the restaurant meets the highest standards of quality and delivers satisfying guest experiences?

We always listen to the guest’s feedback, maintain a positive attitude, personalise service, anticipate needs, interact in a friendly manner, and be hospitable and genuine with the guests. Most importantly, we provide a clean and quality food experience.

What are your thoughts on Bahrain’s restaurant sector?

The island provides, through its restaurant industry, a wide variety of food and drinks everywhere, resulting in a great experience for the people. One can find all types of cuisines in Bahrain. Although the competition is high, it pushes restauranteurs to be on top and provide the best service in the country.

What are three dishes you would recommend guests try at your restaurant/s?

The Miso Black Cod, Volcano Maki, and Grilled Prawn are three dishes I would recommend because they reflect the authenticity of a traditional Japanese Restaurant. In terms of flavours, I can say these are the best in town, prepared with fresh ingredients. The recipes have been with us for years.

What are your favourite places to eat in Bahrain?

I love Turkish grills and there are many Turkish restaurants here that serve quality food. n

In your opinion what makes a restaurant special?

A restaurant stands out through its quality of food. A friendly and attentive staff that provides exceptional service makes a lasting impression. It’s also about creating a comfortable atmosphere with decor, music, and ambience. We use only fresh and high-quality ingredients while all the meats have been carefully selected and tested by Günaydin experts. Each dish is prepared consistently, following a set of standard recipes and portions. The restaurant staff is well-trained in handling and preparing the food while following safety procedures. We seek regular feedback to ensure high service standards.

What are your thoughts on Bahrain’s restaurant sector?

Bahrain’s F&B sector definitely has set a high standard and with so many new restaurants opening up, the competition has allowed dining establishments on the island to put their best foot forward.

What are three dishes you would recommend guests try at your Restaurant?

Any of our Steaks, deliciously spiced Kebabs, and the traditional Turkish dessert, Katmer are my top recommendations to try at Günaydin. My personal favourite would have to be the Asado Beef Ribs. It’s tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned with a fresh taste and is great for sharing.

How do you come up with ideas when developing a new dish for the menu?

First, it’s all about analysing the current food trends and customer preferences to understand the pulse of the diners. Being open to inspiration allows us to explore different concepts and combinations. Finally, experimenting with existing dishes by adding new ingredients, swapping out certain ingredients, or changing the cooking technique are all ways for us to develop our existing menu and constantly innovate in the kitchen.

If you were allowed to keep just one ingredient from your kitchen with you, what would it be?

Pistachio! We import it from Gaziantep, Turkey to make sure our traditional desserts are made with the region’s world-class ingredients. n

The restaurant industry in Bahrain is growing along with the rising demand for dining out. It’s interesting to see how the F&B sector has grown and developed, offering cuisines spanning Asia, the Middle East and beyond. We’re witnessing so many trends such as local Bahraini breakfast cafes, burgers, food trucks, and shawarmas to name a few. Currently, Meat restaurants seem to be highly sought-after in Bahrain.

What are three dishes you would recommend guests try at your restaurant/s?

I would recommend our Tidbits that are served in an Islander way. Guests can enjoy the Cho Cho skewers over the flaming Hibachi fire. Our signature daily-catch Chili Hammour is prepared and served from wok-to-table.

Our steaks and seafood are cooked in an authentic Chinese BBQ wood oven which originated from the Han Dynasty in China. The preparations carry an oakwood flavour, one that you don’t get elsewhere in Bahrain.

What are your favourite places to eat in Bahrain?

My favourites would be Haji’s Cafe in Bab Al Bahrain and Naseef Restaurant. n

Yet, when it was first introduced in 2002 it was a controversial move for the company as many fans of the brand were concerned that an SUV would dilute the company's sports car heritage. However, the Cayenne has proven itself and it has helped Porsche to become one of the most profitable car manufacturers in the world.

The Cayenne is a reminder that Porsche is a brand that is constantly evolving, and is today one of the most popular luxury SUVs on the market for good reason. It's stylish, luxurious, and packed with performance features. The 2023 Cayenne is even better than before.

Here's what you need to know about the new Cayenne:

Engine: The base Cayenne is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 engine that produces 350 horsepower. The Cayenne S gets a 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 that produces 474 horsepower. Both engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Performance: The Cayenne is surprisingly quick for its size. The base model can go from 0 to 60 kph in 5.7 seconds, while the S model can do it in 4.8 seconds. Both models have a top speed of 256 mph.

Handling: The Cayenne is surprisingly agile for an SUV. It's not as nimble as a sports car, but it's still fun to drive on winding roads. The suspension is comfortable on smooth roads, but it can be firmed up for more aggressive driving.

Luxury: The Cayenne is a luxurious SUV inside and out. The cabin is spacious and comfortable, and the materials are top-notch. The Cayenne comes standard with a long list of features, including a panoramic sunroof, heated seats, and a Bose sound system.

infotainment system features a 12.3-inch touchscreen display, and there's also a 10.9-inch touchscreen display for the passenger. The Cayenne also comes standard with a Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The 2023 Porsche Cayenne is a top-of-the-line SUV. In Bahrain, we are of course somewhat limited to long-distance driving, off-roading and seasons of weather. During the drive event in Austria, we seriously tested this car in a variety of weather conditions and terrains. Salzburg, Austria is one of those picture-perfect places in Europe with snowcapped mountains everywhere you look, with typical Austrian architecture all around. Flying out of the Gulf and into these green nature-rich environments is always so refreshing.

What impressed me about the new Cayenne was how well it handled and easily ascended the mountains in Salzburg, going from ground-level moderate climates, climbing up the mountain and progressing through the clouds and the climate changing to heavy rain and snow, with the roads slathered in ice and snow. It took a steady hand to ensure we didn’t fall off the mountain!

From our home in Bahrain, it’s incredibly easy to escape to, much more affordably than you’d think!

I recently visited Sri Lanka for 3 nights and 4 days, keen on having a quick yet unforgettable trip. It did not disappoint, proving that this little-yet-large island nation had something for everyone to enjoy without costing a fortune.

About Sri Lanka

One thing you really need to know about Sri Lanka is that it is truly one of the most beautiful parts of Asia. And in my opinion, it’s an underrated destination. Being so close to the Middle East, it’s an easily accessible and wonderful place to escape for an adventure.

Aside from its astounding natural beauty, what struck me most was how friendly, warm, and welcoming Sri Lankans are. The culture is an inviting one that makes me want to turn right back around with my bags and go stay there a little longer.

My Sri Lankan Adventure: 3 Nights and 4 Days

I started my trip by landing in Colombo. This airport is clean and efficient, plus the friendly team from the Sri Lanka Tourism Board was there to greet us and introduce us to our tour guide, Malan. Hats off to him for making my trip such a pleasure, offering recommendations and detailed knowledge of Sri Lanka and its history.

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

One of the first things we did was visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. It’s a captive breeding and conservation spot for wild Asian elephants. Spotting the elephants lumbering along was quite a sight, and we can thank the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) for establishing this protective place for elephants back in 1975 and keeping it going for all this time.

The Beautiful City of Kandy

We stayed one night in the city of Kandy. It’s a beautiful place, but one of the biggest reasons people come here is to see the Temple of the Tooth, considered by and large one of the most sacred places of worship for the Buddhist world. In 1988, it made the UNESCO World Heritage site list.

The tooth in question is a tooth of the Buddha. You can go into the room that houses the tooth but don’t expect to actually see it. What you will see is the golden casket in which it is kept and plenty of guards ensuring the protection of the tooth as well as the peace of this revered temple.

A Chance Encounter at the Temple of Tooth

Purely by chance, I had the opportunity of meeting and talking with the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka: Dinesh Gunawardena. He happened to be at the Temple of Tooth surrounded by cameras, journalists and TV reporters along with his security entourage. Following a few questions from his press officers, they allowed me to speak directly with him.

He welcomed me to Sri Lanka, told me there is a lot to see in his country and hoped this won’t be my last visit and that I return again soon! The Prime Minister also said Kandy is one of the most important cities in the country. I asked Mr Gunawardena if he has any plans on visiting Bahrain or the Gulf States, to which he replied Bahrain is not far away and perhaps he will be making a visit in the near future.

The Royal Botanical Gardens

Another place to explore while in Kandy are the Royal Botanical Gardens, offering a resplendent place to walk about for hours amid nature. Beyond beautiful plants and flowers, you’ll have the chance to spot monkeys and other wildlife.

We additionally ate an abundance of local cuisine that featured plenty of deliciously spicy curry dishes. It was purely sublime!

Off to Bentota

From Kandy, we went to Bentoto and into a new hotel right on the water with an immaculate view of the Indian Ocean. Being by the water, I took full advantage of water sports, hopping right on a jet ski for an exhilarating ride.

While my long weekend flew by in the blink of an eye, my favourite time was in Bentoto to be by the beach, stroll the shore, and recover my zest for life.

Make your next trip to Sri Lanka and you’ll find tropical nature, adventure, history, and incredible cuisine to be affordable and within reach. n

A Whirlwind Tour of Germany from the Middle East: The Country with Something for Everyone

With a vibrant air that is rich in history that brings you to medieval ages all intertwined with a modern flourish; Germany is a must-visit country. The lively culture and variety of regional distinctions allow for the opportunity to have a unique and exciting experience in every city and town.

I jumped at the chance to tour three distinct parts of Germany. Each beautiful in its own way, my journeys through this quaint European gem took me to Stuttgart for one night, Baden-Baden for two nights, and Essen for three nights. From the Middle East, it’s an excellent location for a holiday, offering something truly special to every type of traveller.

The Overall German Experience

Perhaps you’ve heard the jokes about Germans being on time and precise, and I can assure you, this is no joke. If you value timeliness and orderliness, you will feel right at home in Germany. Everything I experienced from the trains, tours, and

metro services is always right on the dot with the ETA.

During my trip and time with the German Tourism Board, they made strong efforts to reveal the nature-rich country, more so than the notorious German cities most people are already aware of. I was impressed by this whole new side of Germany which I had never seen before or was even aware of.

There was a focus on sustainability and “eco-friendliness” during this trip by use of Germany’s excellent public transport system to cart around the country and its cities. I also found that ‘Lime’ scooters offer a fun and quick way to affordably get around cities. At just 6.99 Euros for 60 minutes, it’s both cheap and sustainable and makes for a great way to take in the new surroundings of whichever city you’re in. What also surprised me about Germany is that the food is delicious. Other countries are often hailed for their cuisine, and after visiting, I think Germany deserves far more praise for its incredible cuisine.

Now, let’s get on with the cities and what you’ll want to discover in them.

Stuttgart

If the name of this city sounds familiar, that is because it is the home to Porsche and Mercedes. This industrial-based town with a similar format to San Francisco with

roads that wind up and down would likely be the last place you’d expect to find good wine. In fact, wine from Germany isn’t something I’d even given much thought to before.

Yet, that’s precisely what you’ll find here as Stuttgart is Germany’s biggest wineproducing city. A trip to the Weingut Diehl vineyard was a sublime way to partake in the wines and offered stunning surroundings to envelop us as we sipped the selections.

Another fascinating thing about Stuttgart is that there are well-preserved homes from the 1800 and 1900s. In the war, most of Stuttgart was blown to pieces and these relics are among the few buildings that remain from this era. Stuttgart is rich in history.

During my short stay in Stuttgart, I also visited the Bauhaus Museum. This creation consists of two semi-detached homes crafted in 1927 by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. It remains the only Weissenhof Estate building that is open to visitors and earned a lot on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.

Baden-Baden

On to Baden-Baden where they say it’s a city so nice that they named it twice. This quiet and calm city is the perfect respite, especially if you feel a bit washed-out from your travels. Baden-Baden was the

highlight of my trip. It’s picture perfect and full of stunning European architecture.

The name comes from Baden in Baden which means water or bath, but they didn’t want confusion with cities like Vienna. And with that, it’s well worth visiting the spa quarter and thermal baths.

Promoting wellness through these restorative thermal waters, they bubble from 2,000 metres below at temperatures up to 68°C. Brimming with healing minerals, it is the ultimate experience in Baden-Baden. You can use the baths without the need for anything else. It’s just 35 Euros and they provide everything you need. It’s great for when it’s wet and rainy to soak all your cares away.

Essen

While Essen is popular with European tourists, few overseas travellers knew of its existence. Until now, that is. With abundant opportunities for recreation in the fresh air and its own slice of unique German culture and hospitality, I truly enjoyed finishing the last leg of my Germany trip here.

Named the green capital of Germany in 2017, it is the city of contrasts, a place that is as excellent for hiking as it is feasting. In fact, after a particularly long and neurotic hike, we stopped mid-way for a beautiful and delicious lunch at Jagdhaus Schellenberg, which

boasts a spectacular biergarten accessible from April through October, weather depending, in the afternoons from Wednesdays to Fridays and on weekends and holidays. The menu offers delectable foods and even offers a vegetarian selection.

My journey was almost complete, with a last stop at the Krupps house. Residing on the outskirts of Essen, set beside railway tracks, you’ll find The Villa Hügel as it is known, a home built in the early 1870s as the residence for a famous German steel family. Since the entire country has always been famed for manufacturing and engineering, seeing the house of the Krupp family was an excellent way to complete my journey.

My six-day tour of Germany was a whirlwind of unique experiences, adventure, meeting interesting people and eating plenty of food I’d never tried before. It was all so eye-opening. I strongly recommend exploring this great country – with so much to see, be sure to give yourself an ample amount of time to check out different cities and regions; made so easy with the excellent public transport system. On this 6-day adventure, I saw plenty, yet there is still so much more to see. n

Raising Happy & Confident Young Learners

Bahrain Confidential speaks to Julie Anne Gilbert, Head of the Infant School at the British School of Bahrain about the importance of early learning and the long-term impact it has on children.

In your opinion, what are some of the long-term benefits of early learning for students?

The most important outcome of an early years education is the headstart it gives children in their social and emotional development. The positive physical and social experiences children have in an educational setting help them become emotionally mature and socially adept. A sense of satisfaction and achievement with increased independence builds inner confidence. This confidence will stand children in good stead as they move up to formal education and into adulthood.

A good early years education can have a profound effect on children’s language and ability to communicate. Studies have shown that children enrolled in good quality early education have higher levels of verbal comprehension and a wider vocabulary up to four years later.

Physical activity is also vital for children’s allround development. In an early years setting, opportunities are provided to develop core strength, stability, balance, spatial awareness and agility, both inside and outdoors. Mastering a new physical skill is another way to boost self-esteem. A good early years education provides many ways to develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, which is linked to early literacy.

What strategies does the British School of Bahrain employ to ensure children receive a solid foundation in the early years?

Our priority is to ensure that a child feels safe and secure in their environment from the start. Each teacher knows each little individual in their care. Once we know a child’s interests, strengths and quirks, we can provide opportunities to support social and emotional development and challenge or scaffold them where necessary.

Sufficient challenge for the most able learners is just as important as sufficient scaffolding for those who need it. For the youngest learners, the parent/ teacher relationship is also extremely important, as parental insight is invaluable. Open communication and positive reinforcement from all adults, every step of the way are powerful tools.

We do all we can to make learning exciting and fun for the children. A sense of humour is vital for young children. A variety of themed days and field trips enrich learning and make it meaningful for the children.

What specific skills or knowledge areas are most critical for young learners to acquire?

the Early Years are personal, social and emotional development, communication and language and physical development. Sometimes parents can focus overly on letter and number recognition. This knowledge will come easily if the building blocks of the prime areas are in place first. It is more important that they are happy, curious, and interested in learning. Exposing children to nursery rhymes, songs and stories from an early age will help them ‘hear’ and ‘identify’ the sounds in words - a very important skill in the process of learning to read.

In your opinion, are play-based learning approaches more beneficial than traditional academic methods for younger children?

The critical factor in all learning is the child's engagement level. Are they focussed, interested, curious and developing their ability to think? Playbased, child initiated learning, where the child selects their resources or toys, means that a child is generally engaged in what they are doing.

If a child has chosen to play with model cars, the teacher will gently guide them on a line of inquiry, giving them plenty of quiet thinking time, allowing them to make mistakes. What happens if we make the ramp steeper? How can we make the car move faster? Do we need a place for them to park? How could we draw or mark the bays so that the drivers

know which are their spots? There are infinite opportunities for sowing the seeds of math and science knowledge.

These memorable play experiences where a child is really allowed to ‘wallow’ in their area of interest can be invaluable.

How do you measure the effectiveness of early childhood education programs at BSB?

At the British School of Bahrain, children in the Early Years are assessed regularly through observation in their physical, social/emotional, and language development. We are fortunate to have a specialist Physical Education teacher and children very much look forward to these lessons. This documentation informs future planning and teachers then provide provocations, challenges and activities to meet the next steps in each child’s learning. Regular, open communication with parents means that all current learning can be reinforced at home and children who need support in a particular area are quickly identified so interventions can be put in place. Our curriculum is dynamic and adapted to children’s current interests and needs. Of course, the proof is in the pudding!
