HELLO! One of the standard items to be taken on holiday is the beach blockbuster. A book to help while away the hours relaxing on the sands. Of course these days it’s just as likely to be a downloaded copy than a weighty hardback, but the principle’s the same. So, in this issue, we’ve taken our lead from several of the great European writers and visited the places that inspired some of the finest writing in literary history. And if that gives you the motivation to seek out their work, then we’ve got a Cornwall beach guide so you’ve got somewhere to lie back and soak up their words. We’ve also found some tasty spots to enjoy a vegetarian meal, plus there’s a chance of winning a dinner for four in one of Liverpool’s hottest restaurants. Roll on summer.

News from Liverpool John Lennon Airport and beyond

Good news at the double for LJLA Holiday company increases Liverpool capacity, and passenger numbers keep on rising Thomson and First Choice have announced increased capacity at Liverpool John Lennon Airport for their summer 2017 flying programme. This includes new routes to Ibiza and Tenerife as well as new 10 and 11 night breaks to Palma, Majorca which gives greater holiday flexibility to holidaymakers flying from the north of England. The announcement comes as the airport has celebrated 14 consecutive monthly increases in passenger numbers.

Customers travelling on the new routes to Ibiza and Tenerife will now have access to some of Thomson and First Choice’s most popular flagship hotels, including Thomson’s 5T Sensatori Ibiza and First Choice’s 4Sun+ Holiday Village Tenerife. Karen Switzer, Director of Aviation Planning for Thomson and First Choice, said: “Adding more capacity from Liverpool with the introduction of two new routes to Tenerife and Ibiza as well as new 10 and 11 night breaks to Palma, Majorca demonstrates our commitment to Liverpool John Lennon Airport and the local area.”

Voyage

“We really appreciate the support from local travel agents who have been particularly supportive of the Thomson and First Choice 2016 flights to Palma from Liverpool which starts in a few weeks’ time and who will now be able to offer customers even more great holidays starting from Liverpool next year.”

Growth in passenger numbers “Adding more capacity... continued at Liverpool John Airport (LJLA) during demonstrates our commitment to Lennon March as passenger numbers by 18% compared to Liverpool John Lennon Airport” rose March 2015 - the highest

The move to introduce new routes is part of the holiday company’s strategy to ensure customers across the UK can fly from their local airport and stay at the best hotels in some of the most exciting destinations. The new routes have gone on sale in line with the launch of summer 2017 holidays.

Andrew Cornish, CEO of Liverpool John Lennon Airport added, “This news brings significant growth from TUI at Liverpool. Their latest commitment towards the Airport is tremendous news both for ourselves and for holidaymakers from across the Liverpool City Region who now have more choice to travel on holiday with Thomson and First Choice with the convenience of flying from their local airport.

March figures since 2011.

Over 380,000 passengers travelled through the Airport making it the 14th consecutive monthly increase in passenger numbers and contributing to a first quarter increase in business of 20% compared to last year, with over 1 million passengers using the Airport this year already - almost 170,000 more than in 2015. A number of new services started from Liverpool in March. Vueling commenced their new service to Barcelona and Wizz Air started flights to both Budapest and Katowice. March also saw the return of Czech Airlines with their twice weekly flights to Prague. Robin Tudor, Head of PR for Liverpool John Lennon Airport commented, “This has been a tremendous first quarter for the Airport and the airlines that now operate from here.”

RYANAIR ADDS SOFIA TO GROWING LIST OF LJLA DESTINATIONS Bulgarian capital will be served by twice-weekly flights Ryanair have announced a new Winter route from Liverpool John Lennon Airport to the Bulgarian capital city of Sofia, its newest European base airport, with a twice weekly service beginning on October 31st. This will be the first time that Sofia has been served from Liverpool with flights due to operate on Mondays and Fridays and is a further addition to Ryanair’s many destinations accessible from Liverpool. The Bulgarian capital becomes the fourth new destination to be announced by the Airport so far this year and the eighth new service to a European capital city to be announced from LJLA in the past 18 months. Robin Tudor, Head of PR for Liverpool John Lennon Airport commented, "We are delighted to see Ryanair add to its list of destinations served from Liverpool and particularly as Sofia is a city not currently served from here. This will further improve connectivity for the City Region, enhancing our links to the capitals of Europe.”

Ryanair’s Head of Communications, Robin Kiely said, “Ryanair is pleased to announce a new twice weekly Liverpool winter service to/from Sofia, which is now on sale on the Ryanair.com website, with our full Liverpool winter 2016 schedule launching soon. “Liverpool customers and visitors can look forward to further improvements in the coming months, including new aircraft interiors, new uniforms and more new routes, under our “Always Getting Better” programme, as we continue to offer so much more than just the lowest fares.”

GRAND NATIONAL HERO WELCOMES PASSENGERS Amberleigh House greeted travellers as they disembarked in the week of the big race Crabbie’s colours brightened up the tarmac at Liverpool John Lennon Airport when, for the first time ever, a horse trotted out onto the runway. Heralding the countdown to the 2016 Crabbie’s Grand National Festival at Aintree the 2004 Grand National winning horse, Amberleigh House, welcomed passengers as they disembarked from their flight into Liverpool. Amberleigh House, owned by Crabbie’s parent company Halewood International, dusted off his equine passport and gave the ultimate photo finish welcome to passengers arriving from around the world as they flew in with Ryanair. Crabbie’s Alcoholic Ginger Beer is the title sponsor of the 2016 Crabbie’s Grand National Festival. Peter Eaton Snr. Deputy Chairman at Halewood International, said: “In true Crabbie’s spirit we wanted to provide a real,

feel good Liverpool welcome to passengers and racegoers visiting the festival. Amberleigh House epitomises the truly remarkable spirit of Grand National winners and having him at the foot of the steps of the aircraft, greeting international travellers as they disembark, was a great way to celebrate the arrival of visitors to Liverpool in the week of the world’s greatest horserace” Robin Tudor, Head of PR, Liverpool John Lennon Airport, said: “It was an honour to have former Grand National winner, Amberleigh House, greet passengers at the airport. Working with Crabbie’s, a local Liverpool company, with a global reach, is a perfect fit for John Lennon Airport and we are delighted that we could come together on this to bring some of the excitement of the Crabbie’s Grand National to the airport.” The Crabbie’s Grand National is one of the crown jewel events in the British sporting calendar with a UK terrestrial television audience of nine million on Channel 4 and an estimated 600 million people worldwide, as well as more than 150,000 people attending Aintree over the three days of the Crabbie’s Grand National Festival.

SUMMER SERVICE TO BARCELONA GETS UNDER WAY Vueling will offer three flights a week to Catalonia Spanish airline Vueling, part of the International Airlines Group (IAG) that includes British Airways, have operated the first flights of their new summer service between Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) and Barcelona. Celebrations took place both inside and outside the airport terminal including a traditional arch of water aircraft ‘baptism’ as the airline’s Airbus A320 arrival from Barcelona taxied in, performed by the Airport’s Rescue and Fire Fighting Service. Arriving passengers were presented with visitor information from Marketing Liverpool too.

at £41.00 one way and can be obtained at www.vueling.com. Vueling is the largest airline serving the main Barcelona El Prat Airport, and operate on more than 410 routes to 162 cities in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, with a fleet of more than 100 aircraft. Robin Tudor, Head of PR for Liverpool John Lennon Airport commented, “Good Friday’s inaugural Vueling flight was a great way to start the Easter weekend and welcome the fourth new airline to commence operations from Liverpool in just over a year.”

“Passengers from Liverpool will be able to reach our other 160 destinations”

The three times weekly service to Barcelona operates on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday with a schedule to suit both leisure and business passengers alike giving travellers the opportunity to spend either a weekend or a working week in Barcelona. Passengers can also connect onwards to other destinations served by Vueling from Barcelona. Basic fares begin

Gabriel Schmilovich, Network Planning, Scheduling and Slots Director at Vueling, said, “We are delighted to commence our services between Liverpool and Barcelona. Vueling is one of Europe’s leading low fare carriers and this new route to Barcelona means that our passengers from Liverpool will be able to visit this top destination during the summer but also reach our other 160 destinations across Europe, the Middle East and Africa with our connecting flights.”

It’s been a busy year already for the Airport and as we move into the Summer period, we expect to see even more passengers travelling through. As regular readers of Voyage will know, over the past 18 months we have secured flights from 5 new airlines, with 14 new services announced to 12 new destinations, bringing over 90 additional flights per week. However, going hand in hand with this recent expansion of routes and airlines, has been a recognition and commitment to further improve passenger facilities in order to enhance the customer experience. Ahead of the busy Summer period we have continued to invest in a number of terminal improvements and developed a greater engagement with our customers to further improve the passenger experience and create the Airport our region loves. Works completed to date include the replacement of old carpeted areas with new flooring, the installation of additional seating, improved flight information screens and completely new washroom facilities. Further work is to continue later in the year too. We are also working in partnership with local organisations such as schools and charities to help ensure that local communities benefit from the Airport’s business too. Plus there's our traineeship and apprenticeship programmes. I look forward to sharing more news about these initiatives. I hope you enjoy this latest edition of our magazine and we look forward to seeing you at the Airport again soon. Andrew Cornish CEO, Liverpool John Lennon Airport

VEGGIE EUROPE Dining options for vegetarians have been steadily improving and that includes when travelling on the continent. It’s some time since the request for a meal without meat or fish was met with an uncomprehending look – particularly in the major cities. Top quality vegetarian fare can be found in most locations, so here’s a guide to what’s available in some of our destination cities.

Le Tricycle Paris, France What began as a true street food operation serving vegetarian hot dogs from converted bikes has now become a full-blown café outlet. The hot dogs with a twist are still on the menu, but there’s now much more choice for the discerning vegetarian and vegan. Large bowls featuring fresh ingredients make a hugely satisfying lunch, plus there’s the option of a hot dog plus sides and a slice of cake which is extremely popular. The café has a good vibe too, so plenty to enjoy. 51 rue de Paradis fly to Paris with easyJet

Cookies Cream, Berlin, Germany You might need a map before you need a menu, but actually seeking out this hip Berlin eaterie is all part of the night out. It’s secreted away behind a Westin Hotel and there’s very little evidence of its existence, but once inside you’ll be treated to some adventurous and exciting vegetarian cooking that you’ll remember for a long time. Starters include celery essence with apple gyoza and seaweed caviar with ricotta cheese and, to follow, the main courses include baked aubergine with corn puree and parmesan dumplings with crème of artichokes. 55 Behrenstraße fly to Berlin with Ryanair

3

Café Paradiso, Cork, Ireland After almost 25 years, Café Paradiso can legitimately claim to be something of a Cork institution, with the publication of four cookbooks spreading its influence far and wide. As a bonus, it has a couple of rooms above the restaurant which can be booked as a dinner, bed and breakfast package for the complete foodie getaway. The restaurant’s menu has evolved over the years and now features a black bean, chocolate and chilli soup, fried haloumi with a carrot puree and parsnip tortellini amongst its dishes. 16 Lancaster Quay fly to Cork with Ryanair

David Bann, Edinburgh, Scotland A stylish restaurant in the heart of the city – just off the Royal Mile – this showcases vegetarian cooking with influences from far and wide. A starter of Thai fritter of broccoli and marinated tofu could be followed by aubergine, chick pea and cashew koftas before winding up closer to home with whisky pannacotta and warm pear. It’s been treating Edinburgh diners for more than a decade and has helped earn Edinburgh an award from animal welfare group PETA as the UK’s most vegan-friendly city. 56-58 St Mary's Street fly to Edinburgh with flybe

Boston

Blogging the World I started The Boston Fashionista in 2011. I was an avid consumer of fashion magazines and style blogs, and all I was seeing were stories about New York and L.A. I knew that there were designers and fashion entrepreneurs in other regions, so I decided to look at design and fashion through a New England lens.

Where would you recommend visitors head to… …get a sense of history? Every Bostonian is going to tell you to take the Freedom Trail – and they are right! Just follow the red line painted through the city to see a number of historical sites and monuments. It’s magical to see historical sites from the beginning of our country, side by side with modern architecture. …eat with the locals? For a more swanky night out, head to The Hawthorne and Island Creek Oyster Bar, both at the Hotel Commonwealth in Kenmore Square. The Hawthorne is the best cocktail bar in the city, and Island Creek offers a unique oyster experience – friendly, knowledgeable waiting staff (it’s OK if you aren’t an oyster expert!) will guide you through a variety of fresh, local oysters. 16

Voyage

It’s divine. For a more quiet night, head to Coppa in the South End. This cozy restaurant is home to Jamie Bissonnette, a recent James Beard winner, who is one of the most accessible chefs in the city – he’ll likely come strolling though the dining room to chat! Finally, if you want really low key, try some of Boston’s amazing food trucks. Bon Me and Roxy’s Grilled Cheese are two of my favorites. …escape the bustle of the city?

Boston Ballet - Swan Lake

Island Creek Oyster Bar

Just fifteen miles north of Boston, Marblehead is a quaint town with a large, winding neighbourhood of homes dating back to the 1600’s (full disclosure: I live in one!). A true sailing community, over 2000 boats fill Marblehead’s picturesque harbour in the summer. Take the short walk up to Ft. Sewall; you’ll be rewarded by 270 degree views of the Atlantic ocean. Whale Watching

The Boston Common

…have a night to remember? Grab tickets to the Boston Ballet. Performing in the ornate Opera House downtown, the Boston Ballet offers a unique program every year, encompassing some of the story ballets with which you may be familiar (Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet) in addition to thrilling and innovative modern pieces. …take in a view they will never forget? The best view of Boston is sailing into it. Take one of the Boston Harbor Cruises to see some of the Harbor Islands, enjoy the sunset, or have a cocktail.

Frank. I don’t know if it is a secret ingredient, or just being at the game, but they really are the best hot dogs! …take in a concert? It is a fact universally acknowledged that the Paradise Rock Club is the best music venue in Boston. Grungy, sure, but it has a long, wide stage which means attendees are up close and personal with the acts. And not just your buddy’s band – major artists come through “the ‘Dise”. A new player on the music scene

is The Sinclair in Harvard Square. The two places couldn’t be more opposite – The Sinclair offers a chic gastropub downstairs – but they’re both perfectly Bostonian. …get romantic? I have a soft spot for The Boston Common (perhaps because that’s where my husband proposed) and the Public Garden right across the street. Order a picnic (many of the local hotels will pack a lunch for you) and hang out in a shady spot with a book

and your loved one. Feed the squirrels, people watch, hold hands… …be awe inspired? Head out to the ocean for a whale watch. A number of whales swim in the waters just off of Boston, and seeing them is truly magical. The last time I went, a baby humpback breeched right next to the boat! I thought about it for days. Website: thebostonfashionista.com Fly to Boston with Aer Lingus via Dublin

…try something that is authentically “Boston”? You can’t leave Boston without taking in a game at Fenway Park, the oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball. It also happens to be the home of the best hot dog you’ll ever taste – the Fenway Marblehead

Warsaw has earned the title Phoenix city because of its ability to rebuild itself after numerous conflicts and conquests, latterly the extensive reconstruction following the Second World War when much of its built fabric was destroyed. Now it’s a prosperous Eastern European city and a leading commercial player in global terms, while still mixing elements of its 700-year history with the new skyline of skyscrapers. 1

CLASSIC SHIRT Start with a shirt. It can be worn with jeans or trousers, it’s good to wear on its own when the temperature is warm enough and provides an extra layer under a sweater when the mercury starts to drop.

2

TAKE HAT The saying `if you want to get ahead, get a hat’ couldn’t be more appropriate. Something floppy and widebrimmed will top off your outfit perfectly.

3

DIG THIS TRENCH Any coat needs to be lightweight as well as useful and a stone trench in a light fabric will blend well with the neutral sweater and a hat in a darker, contrasting colour.

PUMP IT UP Once you reach the city of your choice, don’t be fooled into thinking heels will get you around during the day. Pack one pair that will do you for a hard day’s sightseeing. Superga are always a cool choice.

CLOSE KNIT A sweater in a neutral tone will again be good for teaming with most things. Spring into summer is wildly unpredictable weatherwise, so it’s good to have something to slip on for an extra layer.

6

IN THE SHADES Whether it’s hot or cold you don’t want to go without sunglasses. Whether they’re to add an air of mystery, or to genuinely block out the glare, keep a pair in your tote at all times.

7

STRAPPY HEELS One really good pair of sparkly, strappy heels can liven up the jeans you may have been walking around in and turn them into the basis of an evening outfit.

KEEP THRILLS Travel throughout Europe and there’s a good chance you will come across a castle at some point. Whether an old fortification or a king’s personal folly, the European landscape is littered with towers, keeps and battlements. But wherever you find them, the chances are they will be the most striking building in that area and usually the one most interesting to visit. Here’s our pick of the continent's must-see castles.

Eltz Castle, Germany Imagine splitting your home up so that different branches of the family can live there at the same time. That’s not so uncommon amongst German dynasties and is a feature of Eltz castle where three family lines still occupy this Rhineland castle. It has remained in the same family’s hands for some 850 years. fly to Berlin with Ryanair

Alcazar Segovia, Spain It’s likely that some kind of fortification

numerous conflicts right up to the 19th century and is now a massively popular historical site. fly to Madrid with easyJet

Hohenwerfen Castle, Austria Visitors can enjoy magnificent views as well as the historic surroundings at this superb Austrian castle which sits 2000 feet above sea level, and was built more than 1,000 years ago. Film fans might note it was used as the backdrop for the wartime adventure Where Eagles Dare, and featured in the romantic comedy Just Married.

Bran Castle, Romania There is some thought that Bran Castle may have provided the inspiration for Bram Stoker when imagining Dracula’s castle in his famous novel. However, what most people visit for now is the collection of

art and furniture put together by Queen Marie who was born into the British Royal Family, and married into the Romanian equivalent. fly to Bucharest with Blue Air

Tom Everton FC midfield star Tom Cleverley tells Voyage about his favourite holiday destinations, what he can’t travel without and why hiding an engagement ring wasn’t the best idea!

28

Voyage

Cleverley What’s the first holiday you can remember?

Can you pack light, or is it a kitchen sink job?

When I was about 11 I went to Florida and it was brilliant. It’s probably a holiday that stands out for most kids if they’re lucky enough to go because it’s a completely different holiday experience. The rides are just amazing.

It's a kitchen sink job to be honest. I’m pretty bad for that. I don’t feel comfortable unless I feel like I’ve got everything I might need!

What can you not travel without? That would have to be my laptop. I have to watch my laptop to sleep every night so I can’t go anywhere without it!

Are you beach and a book or city and a backpack? I’m definitely beach and a book. Actually, I’m not much of a reader so I’m more into a ‘pool and my mobile phone’ kind of holiday!

Who would be your ideal travel companion? Definitely my wife.

Where’s your dream destination? We’d love to go to Ko Samui in Thailand because it looks like such a beautiful and charming place. The Maldives would be on the list of dream destinations too.

Is there somewhere you always find yourself wanting to go back to? If I find somewhere I like, I’ll go back over and over again! So we go to Majorca and Portugal pretty much every year. I feel comfortable there and they’ve got good gyms so I can spend time building fitness before we come back for pre-season so it’s become my routine to go there every summer.

We go to Majorca & Portugal pretty much every year

What’s the weirdest things that’s ever happened to you on holiday? I proposed in Las Vegas and lost the ring for a short period of time! I hid it in too good a hiding spot. Me and my pal, who ended up being my Best Man, found it in the end!

How handy is it having Liverpool John Lennon Airport on the doorstep? Yes, it’s great to have an airport on your doorstep. It makes it much easier to go on short breaks away when we’ve got a few days off through the season.

Many now have museums dedicated to them, or walking tours around the cities they lived in or were influenced by, which make for a fascinating visit. So slip your favourite book into your hand luggage and see those places that stirred the writers’ imaginations.

DUBLIN

Each country can quote the works of its great novelists, poets and playwrights as being amongst their finest attributes – whether that’s George Bernard Shaw and W B Yeats in Ireland, Marcel Proust and Emile Zola in France, Federico Lorca and Manuel Cervantes in Spain or Primo Levi and Umberto Eco in Italy.

You can take your pick from several literary giants who have graced the city, but on June 16th there’s only one. That date is the date on which James Joyce’s Ulysses takes place. It’s known as Bloomsday to Joyce fans and the city plays host to readings, people donning costumes of the Edwardian period and following the path of its central character, Leopold Bloom.

The setting for Victor Hugo’s novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame in which the deformed bellringer Quasimodo falls for his beloved Esmerelda in an ultimately doomed romance. Hugo began the novel in an attempt to draw attention to the splendour of Parisian Gothic architecture which he believed was unappreciated and being destroyed to make way for new buildings.

The city’s Cold War history is less pronounced since the fall of the Wall, but there are still reminders of the conditions that inspired novels such as John Le Carre’s The Spy Who Came in from The Cold. Set at the height of the frost between East and West it has its dramatic denouement at the Wall itself.

There are best sellers that hit the top of the charts for a summer, and then there are best sellers that become acknowledged classics for all time. For our last destination we might have to take a little leap of faith – along with thousands of other tourists who arrive in Verona to visit Juliet’s house – Juliet being one half of the world’s most famous starcrossed lovers. The balcony was added much more recently than the story’s setting, but let’s not look too closely!

With the European Football Championships on the horizon, we’d like to get away from them – at least for a long weekend – by doing something cultural instead. Any thoughts? Well, Italy is a football-mad country so you might not be able to escape the action completely, but why not immerse yourself in Verona’s opera festival for a few days. Large crowds and a fantastic stadium might be football reminders, but in this case the thousands of people will be watching the performances inside a Roman amphitheatre. The festival runs through the summer with dozens of performances, this year including Turandot and Carmen, and all with lavish stage sets that do justice to their historic surroundings.

Know before you go Whatever your travel-related conundrum, talk to us at Voyage magazine and let us help you on your way... I was thinking of going to Paris in July around the time of Bastille Day. What can I expect? You can expect a national day of celebration – but with a difference. July 14th is traditionally marked in Paris with a number of events that include a huge military parade held in the morning and attended by the President. There is also a magnificent firework display late in the evening and huge crowds gather in the city centre to see it. It might be worth getting a higher vantage point rather than joining the packed throng. Also, Fire Stations in each arrondissement open their doors for a party with entry for a suggested donation, and plenty of music and dancing. I’m going to Barcelona for a few days but would like to get out of the city at least once. Do you have any recommendations?

Full price tickets can be as little as 22 euros for an unreserved seat on the stone steps, making a magical evening extremely good value. www.arena.it/arena/en. At the end of last year I thought I read that roaming charges for mobile phones were being scrapped in Europe. Has this happened? Sadly no. Although it is due to come into effect fully in 2017. The EU did agree to scrap the charges but there has been a delay in actually enforcing the decision. Charges in Europe have been coming down anyway, but you still need to be careful to avoid a surprisingly big bill when you get home. It’s better to use the free WiFi available in cafes and hotels rather than having your roaming switched on which could see you transferred to another carrier service. If your own carrier offers an add-on service, this can usually be obtained for a small charge which means you only pay for the texts, minutes and data allowable under the add-on, and not charges outside that. It’s always worth checking with your network in advance of going abroad to see whether they have a cap in place to prevent bills skyrocketing. The cap can be removed, but it’s at your own risk.

If you’re the active type then you might enjoy going on a cycling tour of the city’s hinterland. Illustration by: Hello Small World

CORNISH CREAM The perfect British seaside holiday just has to include a beautiful beach – and Cornwall has plenty. Use your flight from Liverpool John Lennon Airport as the starting point for some exploration around the UK’s southernmost county and find the stretch of sand that suits you best.

ISSUE 10

Kynance Cove Lizard Located on the west side of the Lizard and probably the most photographed and painted location in Cornwall, the contrast between the cove’s white sandy beach and the green serpentine rock is a breathtaking sight. There’s a steep 10-15 minute walk down to the cove but that doesn’t stop visitors who head to the beach for a family day out, a romantic stroll along the sand or to photograph the moment when in the sunlight on the sea turns a brilliant turquoise colour. At low tide you can explore the towering rocks stacks and the caves with names such as The Parlour and The Drawing Room

and located just above the beach is an ecofriendly café selling Cornish pasties, fresh sandwiches, baguettes, homemade cakes and cream teas along with beach goods. From Kynance there is a fantastic two mile scenic walk around the coast to Lizard Point, mainland UK’s most southerly point.

Fistral Beach Newquay Say the word Fistral to any avid surfer and you can guarantee their eyes will widen in awe. As one of the world’s top surfing destinations, backed by high cliffs and sand dunes, Fistral is the playground for hundreds of enthusiasts who flock to the beach to get a fix of the big waves. All the big UK surf competitions take place here including Boardmasters, the Quicksilver Skins, the UK Pro Surf Tour and the BUSA Championships so if you’re a gung-ho pro or just a timid beginner, this is the ideal place for you to show off or take your first tentative dip in the ocean. Overlooked by the imposing grandeur of the Headland Hotel, the beach is bookended by two headlands that funnel in powerful, hollow waves which regularly reach heights of between 6 and 8 feet. On shore there are plenty of opportunities to book surf lessons or hire gear and a complex of cafes, takeaways and shops is located on the beach.

Harlyn Bay Padstow

Porthcurno Beach Porthcurno Located in the far west of Cornwall Porthcurno has won many awards and it’s easy to see why. With gorgeous fine soft white sand washed by a sea that turns turquoise in the sun and high cliffs on both sides providing shelter, it’s an oasis of stunning natural beauty.

Porthminster Beach St Ives This crescent of golden sand, framed by a glittering bay, has glorious views across to Godrevy Lighthouse, inspiration for Virginia Woolf’s famous novel ‘To the

The large beach, popular with families, has a stream that flows down one side which is great for kids to paddle in and up on the cliffs is the internationally renowned Minack Theatre, built in the 1920s by theatrical visionary Rowena Wade and her faithful gardener, which you can visit all year round.

Logan Rock famous for its 80 ton granite rocking stone is a 30 minute walk away round the bay to the left and the fascinating Telegraph Museum Porthcurno that tells the story of Cornwall’s role in the pioneering days of global communications is located just before you get to the main car park.

beach at Porthminster is a family favourite for safe swimming while onshore you can simply relax in a deck chair or try your skill at the mini 18 hole golf course where you can also order up freshly made juices and smoothies.

Located just a short walk from the centre of St Ives, the awardwinning Blue Flag

Considered one of the best family beaches in Cornwall, Harlyn Bay is a wide and spacious beach of yellow sand and pebbles with plenty of interesting rock pools backed by dunes and situated on the eastern side of Trevose Head, just west of Padstow. With its reputation as one of the safer beaches in the county, the crescent-shaped bay is popular with novice surfers who can learn to master the waves with surf schools who run sessions from the beach. There’s a fascinating combination of rocky shoreline, sand, dune and tide pools to explore and the beautiful bay is also an unbeatable location to have a go at sea kayaking. For walkers there are delightful routes from the beach to Mother Ivey’s Bay and Trevose Head. The south east corner of Harlyn village provides the access to the beach next to a stream that flows on to the beach. The remains of an old iron age cemetery were discovered behind the beach below the sand. The cliffs at Trevose Head give superb views towards Pentire Head and Newquay.

Cornwall Beaches In brief

Gyllyngvase Beach Falmouth Gylly beach with its arc of golden sand, boasts sweeping views from Pendennis Castle to the beautiful Lizard Peninsula. The gently sloping white sand also has plenty of rock pools perfect for families.

Watergate Bay Watergate Watergate Bay beach, about three miles from Newquay on the North Cornwall coast, is a large beach.

Two miles of golden sand at low tide stretches towards Newquay and out to sea enormous waves come in from the Atlantic providing a spectacular sight and a popular surfing and kitesurfing spot.

It is a large, open bay and frequently picks up swell from the Atlantic and is popular with families and surfers. Watergate Bay is a 15 minute drive from Newquay or a 45 minute walk, however this is a

strenuous walk with many hills and valleys. The beach is a European Designated beach and has achieved the highest standard for UK bathing water.

East Looe Beach

Pentewan Beach St Austell Bay Perfectly positioned on the South West Coast Path, Pentewan beach is excellent for swimming and water sports including surfing, windsurfing, sea canoeing, water skiing, kayaking and sailing.

Looe A lovely bucket and spade style beach located on south east Cornwall’s tranquil coast. A long-time favourite with holidaymakers, East Looe beach is a perfect location for swimming as the beach gently shelves providing easy access especially for the little ones. The sand is great for castle building and you can promenade along the sea front enjoying an ice cream. Backed by substantial sea defences where you can sit and watch the world go by, behind the beach is the vibrant main town home to cafes, restaurants and shops.

Summerleaze Beach Bude Summerleaze has a unique appeal, not least because it is less than five minutes’ walk from the centre of Bude and the large car park leads directly to the sand dunes. The river, with its bobbing fishing boats, flanks the wide, sandy beach that is sheltered by the impressive breakwater, making the beach particularly popular with families and surfers. THE GREAT ESCAPES We’re starting to see more and more of them set up in this country, but in Budapest, Escape Games have become a significant attraction over the last few years. Making use of old and abandoned spaces – just like the ruin pubs (see separate article) – they offer a mindbending array of puzzles and challenges from which to extricate yourself. The timed tasks can be anything from preventing a nuclear reactor meltdown,

SZIGET 2016 Many music lovers are looking further afield for their festival thrills and the Sziget Festival has its fair share of UK followers, being one of the more picturesque events of the summer season. Sziget takes place on an island in the Danube – a fact which puts it ahead of most other festivals for starters – and it’s easily accessible from Budapest being just a short ride by public transport from the city. Whether you choose to do one, five or the full seven days is entirely up to you, but there’s usually a diverse and high quality line-up and plenty more to see and do across the island site. This year the heavy hitters include Noel Gallagher and his High Flying Birds, plus Rihanna, David Guetta and Sia. Day tickets start at 59 euros. www.szigetfestival.com August 10-17

THERMAL SPAS If you’ve been tempted to hit the ruin pubs too hard, or had one too many fruit brandies after your evening meal, a great way to refresh the next day is by choosing to spend some time in one of the city’s many thermal spas. Budapest has more thermal springs than any other capital city and while

their use stretches back to 2nd Century Roman times they really became part of the local culture during the Turkish occupation some 14 centuries later. Now there are 15 such public thermal baths as well as a small number of private facilities at hotels and these are enjoyed by people of all ages.

Some have special facilities for children with extra attractions like water chutes. Visit the Szechenyi Baths in City Park and you’ll be in one of the largest such complexes in Europe.

ROADS TO RUIN The ruin pub phenomenon that sprang up in the city around a decade or so ago has perhaps become less a cultural movement and more a tourist attraction, but that still shouldn’t stop you enjoying some truly amazing bars and venues. As the name suggests, ruin pubs developed inside the shells of abandoned buildings as creative souls took them over and let their imaginations run riot to

design the coolest hangouts imaginable. Don’t expect fancy furnishings or velvet ropes, this is very much a DIY aesthetic but it’s a great antidote to glossily formulaic interiors that could be literally anywhere. To go to the source, visit Szimpla on Kazinczy Street which is one of the oldest ruin pubs in the city.

CASTLE HILL Castle Hill has played host to some kind of royal residence since the mid-13th Century and what has stood on the site has been the subject of many occupations, demolitions, assaults, renovations, remodellings and rebuildings.

The adjoining streets have houses dating back as far as the 14th Century and then there’s the Fisherman’s Bastion built to commemorate the fishermen who protected this part of the city, plus the 700-year-old Matthias Church to explore.

It is now occupied by a spectacular collections of buildings which make both them and their surrounding district worth a day wandering a genuinely historic European location.

To get a real understanding of the area then joining one of the walking tours will pay dividends plus you’ll enjoy remarkable views of the Pest side of the river.

MONUMENTAL WONDER If it’s spectacle you’re after, then visiting Heroes’ Square at one end of Andrassy Avenue should provide you with plenty. The best way to reach it is to walk along Andrassy Avenue as there’s plenty to admire in the breathtaking

year change in 2000 but instead marks 1,000 years since the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian basin. Colonnades and statues provide an inspiring backdrop for photographs, and the presence of the Museum of Fine Arts and the Palace of Arts add to the epic scale.

PARLIAMENT BUILDING Just as London tourists can’t wait to get pictures of the Thames and our own Houses of Parliament, there is an equally big draw in Budapest to the Hungarian Parliament which sits alongside the Danube.

It is home to the Holy Crown of Hungary which was used to crown Kings from the 12th Century onwards and which has been on display in the Parliament’s central hall since 2000.

BEST VALUE As recently as 2013 Budapest was topping the City Costs Barometer Survey for the best value city holiday destination, and last year it was mentioned in despatches coming second behind Prague. The survey, carried out for Post Office Travel Money aims to make like for like comparisons between major cities, and Budapest shows up amazingly well. The survey takes into account items like dinner for two and drinks – and across the board Budapest is excellent value. And it’s not `cheap’ as in `cheap and cheerful’; it’s `cheap’ as in `wow, I can’t believe I haven’t spent more’! Rooms rates, entertainment, transfers from the airport – these are all competitively priced to make your holiday money go further.
