News from Liverpool John Lennon Airport and beyond

New Amsterdam Route

flybe connects Liverpool travellers to the world New destinations now opened up flybe, Europe’s largest regional airline, has announced that it will start operating a new route between Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) and Amsterdam Schiphol Airport later this year. The new service will begin on September 7th and offer up to three flights per day, departing early morning, lunchtime and late afternoon. Flights are timed to coincide with many convenient onward long haul connections available through Amsterdam with destinations including New York, Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Shanghai and Toronto. All will become accessible from Liverpool via Amsterdam.

frequently requested route by stakeholders from across the region, who recognise the strategic importance of this link that puts Liverpool on the global route network. Andrew Cornish, CEO of Liverpool John Lennon Airport commented: “The importance of this route should not be underestimated and this is a big commitment by flybe. Their decision to launch this route to Amsterdam will open up the opportunity for global access to and from the Liverpool City Region. As well as giving business and leisure passengers the convenience of being able to start their long haul journeys from their home airport, it will also bring a further boost for the region’s tourism offer and inward investment opportunities.”

“The importance of this route should not be underestimated”

This new route will add to flybe’s existing Liverpool departures to the Isle of Man and Belfast City, with the airline operating a total of up to 120 weekly flights to and from Liverpool. This is a significant announcement both for the Airport and the Liverpool City Region and one that will be welcomed by the region’s business and leisure travellers. Passengers will be able to take advantage of the convenience of starting their journey from Liverpool John Lennon Airport, then connect onwards at Amsterdam Schiphol to a host of destinations across Europe and worldwide. Re-establishing a link to a ‘hub feed’ has been the Airport’s number one priority for some time. It is the most 4

Voyage

flybe’s Chief Commercial Officer, Paul Simmons, commented, “flybe is delighted to play a part in making it possible for Liverpool customers to access the world through Amsterdam and, just as importantly, make it easier for the rest of the world to come to Liverpool. The airline already has a number of codeshare and interline arrangements with long haul carriers that in the future have the potential to benefit passengers even further.” Flights can be booked at www.flybe.com with one-way fares from £34.99.

NEW ROUTE IS YANKEE DOODLE DANDY Aer Lingus connections to the United States should prove popular Aer Lingus will commence flights to Dublin later this year from Liverpool John Lennon Airport. The service is due to commence on Friday 23rd October with 16 flights per week between Liverpool and Dublin. Flight times are ideal for those passengers wanting to conduct a day’s business in Dublin, leaving Liverpool at 08:40 and arriving back at 19:05 throughout the working week. However, it is the ability for customers travelling from Liverpool to seamlessly connect onto Aer Lingus flights to North America via Dublin airport that is also expected to prove popular. Onward flights are available to destinations including New York, Boston, Chicago, Washington, Orlando, San Francisco and Toronto, with the morning flight from Liverpool timed to enable convenient transfer times for passengers at Dublin Airport of as little as 75 minutes.

PASSENGER NUMBERS UP AGAIN Liverpool John Lennon Airport experienced a growth in passenger numbers of 7.5% in May - the fourth consecutive year on year monthly increase in passenger throughput.

Another advantage for travellers in the ability to ‘arrive before you depart’. Because all parts of the US Customs and Border Protection Pre-clearance process are completed at Dublin airport, Aer Lingus customers clear US immigration and customs before departing to the US. Ireland is the only European country to offer these stateof-the-art facilities and means that customers travelling to the US via Ireland are seen as domestic arriving passengers, enabling a speedy exit after arriving on the airline’s long haul flights. Aer Lingus also has a codesharing agreement with US carriers JetBlue and United Airlines, enabling onward connectivity to over 100 destinations across North America. Aer Lingus has historical links with the Airport and were one of the first airlines to operate from Liverpool almost 80 years ago, having first established air links with the Irish capital in 1936. Andrew Cornish, CEO of Liverpool John Lennon Airport commented, “This latest route announcement for the Airport is a clear demonstration of our commitment to bring more routes, more airlines and more choice for the region’s travellers.” Aer Lingus Chief Revenue Officer, Mike Rutter said “The historic connections between the two cities makes Dublin-Liverpool the perfect choice for Aer Lingus’s first major expansion in Short Haul services for a decade. We believe that we can offer the region both great value flights to Dublin and also access to the fastest growing transatlantic gateway in Europe.”

Passenger figures for the first five months of 2015 are now over 5% higher than for the same period in 2014 and reflect the recent upsurge in business at the Airport.

May’s figures follow previous encouraging monthly increases and follow on from a number of recent new route announcements which are expected to help the growth in passenger numbers continue throughout 2015. These include flybe flights to Amsterdam with onward worldwide connections starting in September and Aer Lingus flights to Dublin with onward US connections starting in October.

AIRPORT MAKES CHANGES FOR THE BETTER New views and enhanced facilities keep passengers smiling Development work aimed at improving the customer experience is nearing completion at Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA), following an opening up of parts of the Departure Lounge and the creation of a number of new and expanded retail units. Almost £1m has been spent in a joint investment between the Airport and its retail partners, with this latest phase of works due for completion ahead of this year’s peak Summer season.

The Kissing Gate Bar & Eatery development includes a new revised look and feel, with a reorganisation of the seating arrangements and the introduction of popular booth seating with diners overlooking the airfield. Also on the lower Departure Lounge a new brand has arrived at the Airport in the shape of a Joe’s Coffee House unit. On the upper Departure Lounge, work to extend the popular Frankie & Benny’s restaurant has been completed to provide additional seating and an updated entrance to cater for the growing numbers of customers.

“These improvements will help to make the customer experience even better”

Works included the construction of a new, larger WHSmith retail unit on the lower Departure Lounge area to replace the previous unit, enabling the existing Kissing Gate Bar and Eatery area to be expanded. Further work is to be completed shortly with replacement flooring and seating.

Lucy O’Shaughnessy, the Airport’s Commercial Director commented, “These latest improvements and additions to the lounge will help to make the customer experience even better. In particular, the opening up of the departure lounge to enable more views out across the apron and beyond will really enhance the relaxed, hassle free ambience that we are already known for.”

Welcome to the latest edition of Voyage, our Airport magazine. These are exciting times for the Airport with further new services starting and new routes being announced. As well as the start of easyJet’s new weekly flights to the much loved Greek island of Zante and Wizz Air’s twice weekly service to the Latvian capital city of Riga, we have also been able to announce significant new services for the future that will soon connect Liverpool to the world. The new services later this year to Amsterdam with flybe and to Dublin with Aer Lingus, both with onward connections across the world, are significant announcements for the Airport and the Liverpool City Region that have been welcomed by the region’s business and leisure travellers. Passengers will soon be able to take advantage of the convenience of starting their journey from Liverpool John Lennon Airport, then connect onwards to a host of worldwide destinations. Just as important is the further boost this will bring for the region’s tourism offer and inward investment opportunities, by making the Liverpool City Region more accessible to visitors and those looking to do business here. Added to the recent terminal enhancements aimed at further improving the passenger experience, the Airport is now starting to deliver on its aim to create the airport our region loves. I hope you enjoy this latest edition of our magazine and we look forward to seeing you at the Airport again soon. Andrew Cornish CEO, Liverpool John Lennon Airport

7 CITY SQUARES Sometimes the best way to get a feel for a place is just to watch the world go by. Observing the rhythms of a city as people go about their daily business can be both enlightening and fascinating. The perfect way to do this is to find a seat in a city square, order a drink and kick back and relax while your destination unfolds before your eyes. We’re going to take a tour of Europe’s impressive squares and piazzas, plus one or two lesser-known spots and pick out the best places to people watch.

1

Of all Europe’s medieval cities, Krakow’s main square is the largest, covering around 10 acres and surrounded by some beautiful architecture.

Rynek Główny Central Square Krakow, Poland

Since the Middle Ages it has been the hub of city life and remains so today with no fewer than 11 streets leading to it. As well as the shops, cafes and restaurants on its edges the square itself also hosts popular events and entertainment. fly to Krakow with easyJet and Ryanair

2

Old Town Square Prague, Czech Republic Krakow’s Central Square might be old, but Prague’s Old Town Square has an even more venerable history. In parts dating back to the 10th century it is perhaps not as well known as the city’s Wenceslas Square, but has an authentic quality and distinctive character to set it apart. There are plenty of places to sit, even if it’s only around the edge of a fountain, and when you’ve had your fill of watching what everyone is getting up to, you can always admire St Nicolas Church or the oldest working astronomical clock situated on the Old Town City Hall - more than 600 years old. fly to Prague with Czech Airlines

3

Praca do Comercio Lisbon, Portugal There’s something in the view of the river from this magnificent Lisbon square that brings to mind the great Portuguese seafaring tradition. Maybe it’s the way the square opens out to the water on one side, taken in combination with the historic buildings all around, but you just feel the scale when stood inside it. It’s often called by its previous name of Terrerio do Paco, or English Royal Palace, because it was the former site of the Royal Ribeira Palace. Conveniently, this square is connected to Lisbon’s other great square, Rossio, by Rua Augusta - a busy shopping street, full of character. fly to Lisbon with easyJet

4

Piazza del Miracoli Pisa, Italy Not a city square in the sense of pavement cafes, markets and events, but much more a place of reflection and architectural wonder. The Square of Miracles contains Pisa Cathedral, Baptistry, Monumental Cemetery and, most famous of all, the Leaning Tower, all contained with a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Partly paved and partly grassed, no visit to Tuscany can be complete without stepping inside this piazza and taking in the history and majesty of this collection of buildings. Construction of the cathedral began in the 11th century, while the legendary tower is a relative newcomer, work having started almost 100 years later. fly to Pisa with Ryanair

ISSUE 7

5

Dam Square Amsterdam, Netherlands Not the place for a spot of quiet contemplation, Dam Square is always likely to be buzzing with activity and if you’ve gone away to see a city in action, then you couldn’t be in a better place. It’s close to everything so tends to be the starting point for days out, the meeting point later in the day and the crossing point for people getting from one destination to another. The Royal Palace and New Church are perhaps the two most important buildings on the square and are directly adjacent to each other. The former was once home to the Royal family as the name suggests and the latter is where all Dutch monarchs are inaugurated.

6

Place des Vosges Paris, France This is the oldest planned square in Paris and occupies a perfectly symmetrical space in the Marais district of the city.

Quiet and unassuming, its combination of Louis XIII architecture, carefullytended greenery and fountain make it an ideal venue to catch your breath during a busy sightseeing day in the French capital. Its historical significance is gained from it being probably the blueprint for residential squares across Europe following its completion in the 17th century. fly to Paris with easyJet

Wolfe Tone Square Bantry, Ireland You don’t have to find a grand city to appreciate how much of a part a square plays in everyday life. Take a trip to the West Coast of Ireland and drop in at Bantry’s town square and you’ll be right at home with the locals. Visit on a Friday when one of the largest markets on the West Coast takes over the town square - a square that was created by infilling of a small harbour. The first Friday 14

of the month brings even more traders, being the traditional Fair Day, and sees the market spill out down neighbouring streets. The square carries the name of Theobald Wolfe Tone who led the Republican United Irishmen and who is commemorated with a statue. fly to Cork with Ryanair

Madrid

Blogging the World My Little Madrid is a true insider’s guide put together by sisters Almudena and Marcela de la Peña. Here Almudena takes us around some of the lesser-known spots that will make any visit special.

Why did you start a blog? After traveling and living abroad for more than ten years I came back to my city, Madrid, and started an exciting and rewarding blogging activity with my sister, Marcela. Our blog: www.my-little-madrid. com is a personal view of the city with many tips and special hangouts, not included in traditional guides, that we felt could help outsiders on their way through Madrid. Where would you recommend visitors head to… …get a sense of history? Apart from the traditional visit to the Goya and Velazquez paintings at el Prado Museum, I recommend the unspoiled and unknown Cuesta del Moyano. You can get there walking from el Prado towards the Thyssen Bornemisza Museum. It is a famous permanent book fair with old wooden stalls dedicated to the purchase and sale of secondhand books.

…eat with locals? Casa Hortensia, a surprising place, situated on the second and third floors of an office building, offering wonderful food. It is not at all fancy or fashionable but I assure you locals go there. On the other side for a cool place go to Ponzano Street where you can find highly rated places such as Sala de Despiece or la Contraseña.

Chocolateria San Gines

…escape the bustle of the city? I have a very special place - El Olivar de Castillejo. A true olive grove with more than 100 olive trees in a hectare of land, located in the hub of town. Amazing! The main activity is cultural but you can also enjoy a nice walk, have a snack or dine under the olive trees in the moonlight, with a slight background cooing that you would never identify with traffic noise of Alberto Alcocer street.

Rooftop of Circulo de Bella Artes

El Olivar de Castillejo

Cuesta del Moyano

… have a night to remember? Try Microteatro por Dinero, a different concept for theatre and easy on your budget. In 13 rooms, 13 different authors present small groups of people with a 10-minute play. If you fancy something in the small hours go to an awesome bar called Toni 2. The concept is a piano bar with an enormous piano, where people of all ages, gather to drink, socialise and sing typical Spanish folklore songs. …take in a view they will never forget? The best place to take in an awesome view of Madrid is the rooftop of Círculo de Bellas Artes at Tartan Roof Restaurant. You can enjoy a glass of wine while enjoying beautiful 360º views.

thick chocolate served with fried ridges engineered for dunking… … be surprised? Platea Madrid will surprise you. It is an enormous open space, originally conceived as a cinema, where different Michelin-starred chefs offer different food in two connected floors plus mezzanines. A space worth the visit where you will always find lively ambience and excellent food. …take in a concert? My recommendation is El Sol. An icon of madrileño nightlife since the 80s, El

Sol was at the epicentre of La Movida, the cultural movement that took place at the end of the Franco dictatorship. You need to check out their live music program. …get romantic? Right inside a courtyard in barrio de Salamanca you will find a very romantic spot: Donde Monica Restaurant. A peaceful and cosy little restaurant with excellent food. I also like La Parra Restaurant, a classical choice that never disappoints, tastefully decorated and very appropriate for romantic encounters.

...be awe inspired? Two unknown museums: Museo Cerralbo and Museo Sorolla. Both are noble houses with original furniture and fabrics. Museo Cerralbo is the result of Cerralbo Marquis’ love for collecting works of art. Museo Sorolla is the house and atelier of famous painter Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida. Business and Pleasure In association with Downtown Liverpool in Business

The past decade has been good for Liverpool. It has managed to re-establish itself as a city that is regenerating, rather than being seen as a northern backwater in decline; and on the back of some outstanding events, including the European Capital of Culture year in 2008, the International Festival for Business in 2014, and the remarkable street theatre show that is the ‘Giants’, it has emerged as the best visited city outside of London and Edinburgh.

Frank McKenna DLIB Chief Executive

sector; and the rebirth of its waterfront, culminating in the spectacular visit of Cunard’s illustrious ‘Three Queens’ in May this year, makes Liverpool the biggest playground in the North of England.

Liverpool has experienced a truly remarkable transformation, particularly when you consider that less than 25 years ago it was a place that had been written off by many as a heritage town whose best days were behind it.

To celebrate the renaissance of Liverpool’s cultural and hospitality offer, and its thriving visitor and tourism economy, Downtown Liverpool in Business is hosting a gala awards dinner that will honour those entrepreneurs, venues and outstanding events that have contributed to this remarkable story. This premier occasion will take place in September in the splendid setting of the Hilton Hotel, and fittingly one of the partners is another brand that is enjoying a similar success and growth, Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

A billion pound plus retail development in the heart of the city; a magnificent arena, soon to be complemented with a convention centre; a burst of investment in the hotel, bar, restaurant and hospitality

If you are involved in Liverpool’s hospitality sector get involved – if you’re visiting the city, I can promise you, there won’t be a dull moment. It is a city on the go and on the up! ISSUE 7

More and more businesses are looking to the Baltic State of Lativa, as the strategic gateway to the huge markets of Scandinavia, Russia and Central Europe for the purposes of trade and investment. But if you’ve concluded your dealings and have some time to spare, Riga's Old Town particularly is a rewarding way to spend half a day.

Ala Folk Klub 6 Get yourself fortified with a spot of lunch. The basement location of Ala Folk Klub is atmospheric enough, but try some local cuisine such as beef shank cooked in dark beer while you’re in there.

St Peter’s Church 5 Tell people you’ve seen a lot of Riga by ascending the tower at St Peter’s Church. The church was first mentioned in 1209 and its wooden tower was once the highest of its kind in Europe. A lift speeds you to the observation platform.

LIFE'S A BEACH Beaches can provide all kinds of environments. Quiet coves for relaxation, exposed, windswept stretches that invigorate, or busy, family-filled sands that are the epitome of the seaside holiday. Around Europe you can take your pick, and we’ve brought together 10 of the best examples. Just don’t forget the bucket and spade.

ISSUE 7

23

Greece

Shipwreck Beach, Zakynthos Despite being only accessible by boat, this gorgeous cove still attracts tourists by the thousand. Plenty of boat trips are available to get you there, and it’s well worth the journey. Known as Shipwreck Beach since a vessel ran aground in 1983, it is dominated by sheer limestone cliffs which tower over the white sands. If it looks familiar, that’s hardly surprising as it is the featured image for many of the Zante holiday brochures! fly to Zakynthos with easyJet

Northern Ireland

Whiterocks, Northern Ireland One of several magnificent stretches of sand along the Northern Ireland coastline which are immensely popular with visitors.

Cala Macarella, Menorca Sheltered by pine tree covered hills, this is a stunning beach on which to lie back and soak up the sun. It’s also worth considering going slightly out of season to have more of the beach to yourself at this truly beautiful location. Temperatures are good enough for sunbathing out of high season, and a short walk takes you to the neighbouring Cala Macarelleta. Check out Susy’s restaurant/bar for decent food and drink. fly to Menorca with easyJet 24

Voyage

The natural rock formations carved out by years of erosion form an impressive backdrop to the lengthy, firm beach sands. Families, water sports enthusiasts, horse riders and hikers can all be found making the most of this award-winning attraction. fly to Belfast with easyJet

Italy

San Fruttuoso, Italy Almost hidden along the Ligurian coastline, this charming cove can be accessed either by foot - although it’s a bit of a hike - or by boat.

Portugal

Praia de Miramar, Portugal

A small beach overlooked by an abbey rewards the trip and will make for some superb holiday snaps. Take a glass-bottomed boat out to see the underwater statue of Christ with its arms and face raised towards the light. fly to Pisa with Ryanair

Just south of Porto is the wonderful beach at Miramar which is well worth seeking out, away from the more tourist-oriented offerings. It has a very distinctive feature with the 17th century Senhora Pedra chapel situated on a headland meeting the Atlantic waves. It is also close to one of the more upmarket residential areas of the region, so is well served by quality cafes and restaurants. fly to Porto with Ryanair

Playa Las Teresitas, Tenerife A rarity in that the sands are golden rather than the more traditional black on the island, imported as they were from the Sahara more than 40 years ago. With the Anaga mountains overlooking a mile-long curved beach and the village of San Andreas close by for refreshment in restaurants and bars, Las Teresitas is always worth at least a day trip.

Playa de Ses Illetes, Formentera

Likely to get busiest at weekends, so if you’ve got time on your stay during the week, that’s the time to head out. fly to Tenerife with Ryanair

When you think ‘beach holiday’ and images of white sands and turquoise seas come to mind, the you might as well be conjuring up an image of this Balearic hotspot. But with Formentera being largely underdeveloped, the beaches are not subject to the looming presence of high-rise hotels. You can stay in Ibiza and catch a regular shuttle service to the island if it’s just a day or two on what was once part of the old hippy trail you want to experience. fly to Ibiza with Ryanair ISSUE 7

25

France

Zelo’s Beach, France If you want some guaranteed exclusivity then this private beach at Beaulieu-sur-Mer on the French Riviera might be just the ticket. You need to book your spot in advance otherwise you might find yourself on the outside looking in as DJs play laidback tunes in the afternoon, but then crank up the party atmosphere at night. Individual cabanas on the beach add to the overall ambience, and you can get waiter service direct to your lounger. fly to Nice with easyJet

Jersey

St Brelade’s Bay, Jersey If you’re going to Jersey for a summer holiday, the chances are you will find yourself at St Brelade’s Bay at some point. It gets busy, but with good reason, and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t enjoy the wide sands just because a good few fellow travellers have picked the same spot.

Greece

Mastichari Beach, Kos Kos is a very popular island and while a lot of development has been carried out, the area around Mastichari has been improved tastefully which makes a visit to its beach that bit more pleasant. The white sands are fringed by tamarisk trees and if they get busy nearer the town itself, a short walk will usually see you leaving the congestion behind. This north coast resort area makes a pleasant diversion from Kos town and can be easily accessed by public transport. fly to Kos with Ryanair 26

Voyage

Safe for bathing, a fairly sheltered location and conveniently situated, it’s great for a family holiday outing. fly to Jersey with easyJet

BEACHWEAR If you think dressing up to go out is hard, try dressing down for the beach. It’s not as simple as slipping into a swimsuit or shorts and heading out onto the sand. You’ve spent months getting beach ready, so why spoil the work with the wrong outfit?

Voyage

There are a million and one different styles, colours, patterns and cuts, so how do you choose the right one? We’re obviously talking about swimwear, and it’s the one decision that could make or break a beach holiday. What will look good, what will suit, will it show off what it needs to, but hide what it doesn’t? Here’s Voyage’s lowdown on making the right choice. Looking good on the beach isn’t simply a matter of getting in shape; there’s then the tricky business of choosing what to wear to suit the shape you have either got yourself into, or wanted to get out of but haven’t quite managed it. Plus, it has to work for the activity. Are you just going to be lounging or will there be some swimming or splashing around in the sea? A popular silhouette for 2015 is a retro-style bikini with high-waisted bottoms which has the added advantage of taking care of a little spare tyre should you have one! The 50s styling brings a touch of old-school glamour to your sunbathing. Cut-outs are also popular this year, but be careful with suits that have too many straps crossing the cut-out sections. These can lead to some very funny-looking tan marks once you’ve been out in the sun for a while. One piece suits are always a solid choice, especially if you prefer to cover up a little more, and this summer, suits with a strong, bold print are very much to the fore. Now swimsuits and bikinis are not going to take up very much space, but if you’re really looking to pack smart then consider something that works in the evening as well as during the day. A pretty one-piece can easily be transformed with a skirt. Men don’t get away with it either. You can’t just rely on pulling on a pair of football shorts, and since Daniel Craig emerged from the waves in some tight, square cut shorts, there’s a lot of pressure on getting the right suit. If you’re on the bigger side, try a classic fit short with a darker colour, if shorter, keep the shorts length above the knee. Styles with a drawcord always look classic, but check the cord if you’re not buying a brand new pair. The combination of sand and sea water will naturally wear the cord and you don’t want it coming apart. ISSUE 7

Protect your skin from the

SUMMER! Throughout the year it’s important to have a good skincare regime as the seasons change. Different conditions bring a different set of potential threats to your skin looking smooth, glowing and radiant. We asked the experts at Beyond Medispa for their advice on how to keep your skin looking its best during the summer.

34

Voyage

The HydraFacial Process: In the summer our skin changes, days get longer, the weather is warmer; but what does this mean for your skin? Our lips are important to protect as they have no oil glands, therefore cannot protect themselves from harmful rays or free radicals. For this reason we always advise our patients to pat their PH Advantage Daily Anti-oxidant over your lips, face, neck and décolleté to ensure optimum protection and luscious, hydrated lips all summer long. Due to extra perspiration and other lovely things the summer brings such as bathing in sea water, swimming pools and sun creams, our skin tends to get more dehydrated, which once the summer is over leaves us scaly and lacklustre. Our PH Advantage Hyaluronic Serum is our super hero product, keeping your skin plumped and hydrated throughout the summer months. We also advise using a gentle exfoliating cleanser, swapping our Glycolic cleansers (better used in winter Months) to the refreshing PH Advantage Polybead Cleanser. Having monthly facials will also help to keep your skin in its best possible health during the hotter weather. At Beyond Medispa we recommend our celebrity favourite HydraFacial, which is a deep cleansing, exfoliating, detoxifying, hydrating wonder facial.

Step 1. Cleansing and Exfoliation. Dead skin cells are removed to reveal healthy new skin.

Step 2. Infusion of glycolic solution which helps to loosen impurities, blackheads and debris from pores without irritation.

Step 3. Extractions. Painless, automated extractions use vortex suction to clean out pores and remove blackheads.

Step 4. Hydration. Antioxidants and Hyaluronic Acid are infused to nourish and protect the skin.

Step 5. Maintain. The HydraFacial Daily Essentials help maintain, prolong and enhance results between treatments.

Beyond Medispa Manchester’s clinic manager Katie Hughes-Dawkins says

I have worked in the beauty and aesthetic industry for 18 years and the HydraFacial is hands down the best facial I have ever come across.

The HydraFacial is available at Beyond MediSpa in

TEE TIME We’re very lucky here in Liverpool to be so close to many high quality golf courses, including several which will take a turn hosting The Open championships. Last year Rory McIlroy picked up the winner’s Claret Jug at Royal Liverpool and this year’s event is due to take place at the spiritual home of golf, St Andrew’s, in July. The Open will be back in the region in 2017 when Royal Birkdale in Southport enjoys its place in the international spotlight. Many of Europe’s leading courses are within easy reach thanks to connections from Liverpool John Lennon Airport, so we’re going to walk you down the manicured fairways of a magnificent seven starting very close to home.

Real Club de Golf El Prat Barcelona, Spain Just outside Barcelona, this club has a long and distinguished history having been around since 1912, but its contemporary popularity has been maintained by the work carried out by the legendary Greg Norman. This was the first course design commission in continental Europe for Norman who was world number one for six years, and brings 45 holes together in a variety of combinations making, in effect, nine different courses. It presents a challenge to all standards from its championship holes, to those which are better tackled by the less experienced. www.realclubdegolfelprat.com fly to Barcelona with easyJet and Ryanair

Royal Birkdale Southport, England It has been voted the best course in Britain, it remains one of the leading courses in the world, and is a regular on The Open rotation, hosting that most prestigious of championships again in 2017. As a links course it is a true test of a golfer’s skill, with the dunes and rough alongside the fairways putting a real premium on precise shotmaking. Book a round and you will find yourself following in the footsteps of all the game’s greats. In addition to The Open, won here by such legends as Tom Watson and Lee Trevino, the course has also staged two Ryder Cups including the famous 1969 contest which Britain and Ireland tied with the USA thanks to Jack Nicklaus’ sporting concession of Tony Jacklin’s putt on the last hole to halve their match. www.royalbirkdale.com right here 38

Royal Portrush

Golf in Europe A brief history

Coleraine, Northern Ireland Unique in that it is the only club in Northern Ireland to have hosted The Open, Royal Portrush has two outstanding 18-hole links courses - the Dunluce Links and the Valley Links. Golf Magazine rated the Dunluce championship course the 12th best course in the world which is some honour when you consider the amount of competition. It’s 14th hole is known as ‘Calamity’, a fate that has befallen many attempting to reach the 210-yard par three hole across a valley.

The courses’ proximity to the North Atlantic make them a rugged test, and also almost lost them the 5th green and 6th tee areas in the 1980s when erosion threatened them with a watery grave. www.royalportrushgolfclub.com fly to Derry with Ryanair

Pau in France can lay claim to being the first European golf club established outside the British Isles where the game had been played for some three centuries. It was formed in 1856, laying the foundation for a sport which is now commonplace but which took some time to become firmly established on the continent. The eventual rise in popularity, however, was recognised in 1979 when golfers from continental Europe were invited to bolster the GB ad Ireland team in the bi-annual Ryder Cup, leading to an era of unprecedented success. The first Ryder Cup to be held outside either the US or Britain took place at Valderrama in Spain.

Golf-Club Cranssur-Sierre Crans-Montana, Switzerland There aren’t many courses that will surpass the views enjoyed by golfers driving off at this Swiss venue which boasts Alpine mountain tops as close companions. The course layout was given a refresh by the great Seve Ballesteros in the 1990s and it remains home to the Omega Masters championship on the European tour which has seen Merseyside professional Tommy Fleetwood - who learnt his skills at nearby Formby Hall - finish fifth and ninth respectively in the last two seasons. The seventh hole is the best spot from which to truly appreciate what a majestic location in Crans-Montana this is. www.golfcrans.ch/en fly to Geneva with easyJet ISSUE 7

Penha Longa Lisbon, Portugal Fans of golf course design are in for a treat should they choose to tee it up at the Penha Longa Resort just 16 miles from Lisbon. These 27 holes were the work of acclaimed course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr who has a portfolio of 270 courses to his credit and a name which is synonymous with quality.

Le Golf National Paris, France

The resort is set within a national park so the surroundings for golfers are truly beautiful, enhanced by Trent Jones Jr’s skills as a designer with a reputation for working with the natural environment.

If people know anything about French golf, it is usually the unfortunate fate which befell Jean van de Velde who lost the 1999 Open despite having a three shot lead going into the last hole. But it’s likely that in the coming couple of years, Le Golf National will steal some of M van de Velde’s thunder as it gears up to host the 2018 Ryder Cup - only the second course on mainland Europe to do so.

Albatross Golf Resort

Featuring two courses, L’Albatros championship course around which the Ryder Cup will be staged, and the less demanding L’Aigle, Le Golf National is close to Versailles and perfect for a short Paris break.

Prague, Czech Republic Three times in the last half dozen years this has been named golf resort of the year in its native Czech Republic, combining wonderful amenities with an excellent championship standard course. There are outstanding practice facilities alongside the beautifully picturesque course which features plenty of water to punish a wayward tee shot or approach iron to the green. 40

Leanne & Dave share their holiday secrets

Q&A

Q&A with Leanne & Dave Thousands of us wake up every morning to the banter between Leanne Campbell and Dave Kelly on Liverpool’s Radio City. Here the Breakfast Show personalities share their holiday secrets with Voyage, and include a cast that involves Kelly Brook, Thor and 50 Cent.

What’s the first holiday you can remember?

Dave: Great Yarmouth, well actually a place called California just on the outskirts. I used to tell everyone we were off to California and my mates at school were well impressed!

Mauritius

Leanne: Going to Cala Mesquida resort in Mallorca when I was 6. My grandparents wanted to take me abroad and booked the holiday but I panicked the week before and my poor mum and dad had to book last minute, cost them a fortune. I can remember the drama! It was fab though! I won Miss Robotics and Miss Cala Mesquida in the kids’ club, my proudest moments.

Can you pack light, or is it a kitchen sink job?

What can you not travel without? Leanne: Stretchy pants! I love getting glammed up to travel it’s all part of the experience for me. As children we all picked a ‘travelling outfit’ and I still do that now. But I need to be comfy on the plane so it’s shoes off and I’m curled up under a blanket with my Pringles. Dave: I can’t go anywhere without my iPad. Movies and the odd email, but mostly Angry Birds. Obviously.

Are you beach and a book or city and a backpack? Leanne: Beach… just no book. I have a five-year-old and a one-year-old so holidays are a little different than they used to be. Now it’s all about kids’ clubs and sand castles.

Leanne: I am really good at packing light now I have kids. I just need a few maxi dresses, bikinis and a make up bag. My little ones however, they are a different story. This year we will be packing four Ninja Turtles, Peppa Pig, Thor, Iggle Piggle, Iron Man... Dave: I can pack light, unless the Mrs is coming and I have to pack more than three pairs of pants or she thinks i’m disgusting.

If money was no object, where’s your dream destination? Leanne: We would love to go to Disneyland and Lapland soon. As a couple we loved last minute trips on a budget all over the world but children are very fussy. I’m saving now so next year it’s going on the ‘to do’ list. Dave: Mauritius, looks great in the brochures. Clear water, white sand, immense.

What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to you on holiday? Leanne: Partying with my husband, mate Kate, a local pimp, a 50 Cent lookalike, four lads from Fazakerley in The Rose & Crown pub miles off the Vegas strip. It was the only place we could watch the derby at 7am! Dave: Ending up presenting a radio show for the local radio station!

How handy is it having Liverpool John Lennon Airport on the doorstep? Leanne: I remember years ago when it was nowhere near as big as it is now. The changes over the last ten years are fantastic; it’s always my first choice when booking flights. Dave: Really handy! There’s nothing more annoying than having a two-hour trip home when you’ve just landed!

Dave: Beach and a book, although the breakfast show takes it out of me so Beach and Bed.

Who would be your ideal travel companion? Leanne: My husband, he’s so laid back like me so travelling is never stressful. We have been together since we were teenagers and I have amazing memories of our travelling adventures. We made a list of dream destinations and ticked them off over the years. My favourites were Hong Kong, Lake Como, Vegas and New Zealand was really special, that’s where I conceived my son! Dave: Kelly Brook. One word, Bikini.

Spain shares the August 15th date as do many European countries including Greece and Austria. In the Czech Republic July 5th and 6th are holidays marking Sts Cyril and Methodius and the reformer Jan Hus. My partner and I are looking for somewhere we can go where it will be just adults – no kids! Where would you suggest? There are many, many resorts now offering breaks for couples/adults only so the only limiting factor on your choice is budget. Here again you can go looking for a budget option or strike out for the five-star all-in end of the market should your wallet stretch that far.

Know before you go

The Seaside Grand Hotel Resedencia on Gran Canaria is aimed at the older market rather than families with young children, and offers a peaceful haven perfect for relaxation.

Whatever your travel-related conundrum, talk to us at Voyage magazine and let us help you on your way...

You might also want to have a look at the Asimina Suites on Cyprus. This is five-star accommodation with a spa and its own beach within easy reach of Paphos.

I’m going abroad in the summer and fancy taking in a round of golf while I’m away. Is it worth taking my own clubs or looking to pick up a set from the course? It’s always an added complication when playing golf abroad about what to do about your clubs. They are not always the easiest items to transport and there are the charges to consider which vary between airlines. Hiring from courses means wildly differing standards on offer, so it’s good to know that a service is available that makes choosing and playing the clubs that suit you much easier.

Can I get holiday insurance any time before I leave? You can get insurance until quite late in the day, but we’d recommend getting your insurance cover sorted out at the time of booking if at all possible. While insurance bought at the last minute will still apply to most of the things covered by a policy bought much earlier, what it won’t apply to is if you need to cancel for some reason. This is to prevent people waiting to see if they can actually go on a holiday they’ve booked and then getting insurance to cover them when they cancel. Having the insurance in place gives you added peace of mind, but make sure you want your policy to cover everything you need it to.

Clubstohire.com is a service which allows you to collect clubs at airports across Europe including many served by Liverpool John Lennon Airport. From 35 Euros for a week you can choose brands such as Taylor Made and Callaway for your rounds abroad.

I don’t want my summer break to coincide with public holidays across Europe. Which dates should I be looking to avoid? Different countries have different public holidays – and many are different from our own Bank Holidays so you can’t use those as a guide, and many are linked to religious observance. In France, for instance, Bastille Day on July 14th and the Feast of the Assumption of Mary on August 15 are both public holidays.

MALTA Malta is just about perfect for a summer holiday. It’s easy to get around, the climate is wonderful, there are attractions for the whole family, blue seas and skies, and 7,000 years of history packed into three small islands. In just three and half hours from Liverpool John Lennon Airport you can be enjoying life with a Mediterranean twist. Follow our guide to find out more.

ISSUE 7

47

UNDERSTANDING MALTA Malta is an extremely distinctive destination, being the product of numerous influences which have all filtered down over its lengthy recorded history. Principally it is made up of three islands, Malta, Gozo and the smaller Comino and tinier, uninhabited islands in its archipelago. Its location between North Africa and mainland Europe in the Mediterranean has made it an important trade and strategic location over the centuries and seen everyone from the Phoenicians, Romans, Normans and, latterly, Britain bringing influence to bear. Its role in World War Two in standing up to a Nazi siege earned the whole country a collective George Cross on behalf of a grateful British nation. As a country it has a strong religious tradition, particularly in Roman Catholicism, and churches abound in every village and along the various highways. A eurozone member, it welcomes around a million and a half tourist visitors a year.

CLIMBING MALTA The islands are beginning to establish a reputation as a destination for climbers such is the abundance of good quality routes for both traditional and sport climbs at all levels of difficulty. Climbing is possible 12 months a year due to the mild weather, while crags are rarely more than half an hour's drive away meaning there is very little time lost for those choosing to take a holiday and practice this pastime.

48

Voyage

Hundreds of climbs are available across the islands, many on the west coasts of both Malta and Gozo, with the local climbing clubs actively developing new routes of all grades on the islands’ distinctive limestone. Check out: www. maltaclimbingclub. com Guidebook available from: www.malta climbing.com Photo by Inigo Taylor.

CRUISING MALTA It may be that your entire holiday is not on Malta, but it’s a stopping off point for your cruise liner. In which case, you’re in luck. Malta’s compact size means that you can see plenty on a day’s stop-over. The harbour is just a short distance from the capital city, Valletta, which is

itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so you can be in the thick of things within minutes. Make the Grandmaster’s Palace on Palace Square one of your stops for a wonderful slice of island history or the packed Merchant Street market for something current and authentic - be

quick though it’s only on until noon. Additionally you may consider starting your cruise from Malta, in which case you could always book a couple of days ahead of the cruise’s departure for a short stay.

NIGHT-TIME MALTA It’s doubtful that you will have picked Malta because you’re looking to - as the song goes - rock and roll all night and party every day. It’s a different kind of evening and nighttime offer; more laid back, with less hands in the air, foam or glowsticks, than other islands we could name. Head for Valletta’s restored waterfront for a choice of restaurants and bars or look for Aaron’s Kitchen on Archbishop Street for dishes such as artisanal sheep’s cheese ravioli or rabbit simmered in white wine and honey. The spectacular Teatru Manoel on the capital’s Old Theatre Street is worth a visit to see a production in one of Europe’s oldest working venues of its kind.

ISSUE 7

49

HISTORIC MALTA Malta can rightly claim to being one of the most important pre-historic centres of human development in the world, with numerous examples of early habitation stretching back many thousands of years. The Megalithic Temples might sound like a band destined for the main stage at a heavy metal festival but they are, in fact, some of the oldest free-standing structures in the world - possibly even the oldest. Across Malta, temple remains have been found which date back some 5,000

years and some of these structures have been recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Another massively important archaeological find was the Hypogeum at Paola which dates back to around 3000BC. This is the only known prehistoric underground temple in the world and was used originally as a sanctuary, but also as a burial site. Book well ahead if you want to visit as only 10 visitors per hour are allowed in so that the microclimate in not disturbed.

UNDERWATER MALTA Whether you’re a novice looking to learn or an experienced diver after some interesting sites, then Malta is a great place to climb into a wetsuit. What makes it so attractive to newcomers is that conditions are particularly benign with no tides and few strong currents. There are also

50

Voyage

numerous schools willing to offer short courses to prepare you for the clear blue waters. Those waters allow stunning photography down to a depth of 30 or 40 metres, so the record of your dive will stay with you forever.

Many dive sites are extremely close to each other so you should be able to cover a number during your stay should you wish. Highlights include Dwejra Point where caves, arches and a tunnel take divers on a stimulating journey, and Cominotto Reef where soft corals and red sponge add a splash of colour.

FAMILY MALTA If you’re going away for a family holiday then having activities for the children to enjoy is an absolute must. Malta comes up trumps in having several family-friendly attractions from a former film set to a marine life centre. Popeye Village at Anchor Bay, Mellieha, is situated on what

was the set of the live action Popeye film made in 1980 and starring the late Robin Williams. There’s a splash pool and lido, as well as the collection of buildings constructed for the film and even a Santa’s Toy Town. Keeping cool in the hot weather isn’t a problem at the Splash & Fun Water Park at Bahar ic-Caghac

where slides and chutes send visitors hurtling into one of the pools. A family pack entrance ticket for two adults and two children is only €52. The neighbouring Mediterraneo marine park offers an opportunity to get close to dolphins and sea lions, as well as the park’s diverse collection of reptiles.

FESTIVAL MALTA No matter where you are in Malta during the summer months, the chances are you won’t be far from a village Festa - the celebration of a patron saint over an extended weekend. Villages will be adorned with decorations, there’s likely to be a fireworks display and the streets will be full of vendors selling goodies such as deep fried date cakes called mqaret and Maltese nougat. A highlight is often a band marching through the streets towards the village church with a crowd following behind. ISSUE 7
