News from Liverpool John Lennon Airport and beyond

Peel Group investment will give LJLA a further boost New deal strengthens commitment to improvement The Peel Group has announced a long-term agreement with Liverpool John Lennon Airport’s lenders that will underpin a major investment programme in LJLA over the next five years. The new arrangement will further support the strong operational performance of LJLA, as well as its future growth. The agreement sees new committed funding to further improve the Airport’s terminal and passenger experience, through terminal refurbishment works and expansion of facilities in line with future passenger and airline growth.

Airport made an operating profit of £2.4m. Steven Underwood, Chief Executive of The Peel Group, said: “We are delighted to have secured this new deal, which has allowed us to commit to the new investment programme. The future of Liverpool John Lennon Airport is strategically important to Peel, the wider city-region and, indeed, the Northern Powerhouse as a whole. “We have invested more than £100 million in LJLA over the last 15 years and have overseen a transformation in the business. We will continue to work closely with all the Airport’s stakeholders to ensure its continued success.”

“The future of Liverpool John Lennon Airport is strategically important to Peel, the wider city-region and, indeed, the Northern Powerhouse as a whole”

In the last 12 months the Airport has seen an upsurge in business following the addition of a number of new routes and airlines operating from LJLA, bringing a 6% increase in passenger numbers for the first half of 2015 compared to the same period last year. For the financial year 2013/14 Liverpool John Lennon 4

Andrew Cornish, CEO of Liverpool John Lennon Airport, commented, “This is an exciting time for the Airport and Peel’s latest commitment will help to ensure that whilst continuing to grow the business further by offering our passengers more choice of airlines and destinations, we can give them the best possible passenger experience too, cementing our position as the Airport the region loves.”

EASYJET HITS 35M PASSENGER MARK AT LJLA First flight left Liverpool in 1997 Two lucky passengers were rewarded with a pair of return flights as easyJet reached the milestone of carrying its 35 millionth passenger to and from Liverpool John Lennon Airport. The airline which now offers 30 routes from LJLA celebrated with Tjasa Franko and Fateha Khanom before they boarded their flight from Liverpool to Amsterdam. easyJet has been serving the airport for 18 years and base seven aircraft at the airport.

Andrew Cornish, CEO for Liverpool John Lennon Airport, commented:

CHANNEL 5 CAPTURES DAY-TO-DAY LIFE AT THE HOLIDAY AIRPORT

“We have come a long way since the launch of our first easyJet flight in 1997, and since then easyJet have been integral to the growth of the airport and the City. We’re looking forward to continuing the fantastic partnership and to looking after the next 35 million customers.”

LJLA the focus of a new TV series

Ali Gayward, UK commercial manager for easyJet, commented: “I am really excited to be at the airport to reward our 35 millionth passengers with a pair of flights to any destination on easyJet’s network. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate.

TV viewers have been getting a peek behind the scenes of Liverpool John Lennon Airport thanks to Channel 5 series `The Holiday Airport’. TV cameras spent over three months filming at LJLA following families, friends and individuals who pass through the Airport on the way to their destinations.

TOP HONOUR FOR LJLA

Annual City of Liverpool Business Awards.

Business of the Year title awarded by DLIB

LJLA was named Business of the Year, in recognition of the contribution that the airport makes for the city region

Liverpool John Lennon Airport took away the top award at the Downtown Liverpool in Business

Hundreds of firms across the city flocked to the beautiful Sefton

Park Palm House to recognise the talent and hard work of the business community in the last year. The awards have become a popular event in the city’s calendar, celebrating the brightest and best of the region’s commercial world and the airport.

The series also took a behind-the-scenes look at the dedicated teams of employees whose mission it is to make sure that every holidaymaker’s journey is safe, speedy and a great experience. Programme makers, Plimsoll Productions from Bristol first approached the Airport almost 12 months ago to explore the possibility of making the series at LJLA, having specifically chosen

Liverpool because of its reputation as an airport where the holiday starts the moment you arrive. Whilst employees from across a diverse range of organisations who work at the airport were filmed undertaking their daily duties that enable passengers to have a great start to their holiday, it was the more unusual activities that regularly take place at the airport that interested the programme makers too. The seven-part series showed how all manner of activities including a super car being tested on the airport taxiway, the opening of a new gym for airport employees, local school children attending an airport tour and playing tennis on the runway, is all in a day’s work for employees at ‘The Holiday Airport’. Robin Tudor, Head of PR for Liverpool John Lennon Airport commented, “Passengers tell us what a great experience they have when travelling through the airport at the start of their holiday and I’m sure this series helped to capture and share this with viewers.”

PRAGUE SERVICE CELEBRATIONS ARE JUST CAPITAL New service is ideal for weekend breaks

and Mondays, giving travellers the opportunity to spend a weekend in Prague.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport celebrated Czech Airlines’ inaugural service from Liverpool to Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic.

Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic and it is often described as one of Europe’s most beautiful cities.

The twice weekly summer operation is ideal for leisure passengers with flights on Fridays

Celebrations commenced with a traditional arch of water aircraft ‘baptism’ performed by the Airport’s Emergency Response Service to

welcome the arrival of the first Czech Airline’s flight to Liverpool. This was followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony ahead of the first departure and a presentation to the airline of one of the Airport’s themed celebratory cakes for passengers and airline staff to enjoy. The service will be returning in the summer of 2016.

LJLA BACKS HEATHROW EXPANSION PROPOSAL Liverpool John Lennon Airport welcomed the news that of the three schemes shortlisted for expanding aviation capacity in the UK, The Airport Commission unanimously concluded that the proposal for a new northwest runway at Heathrow Airport, presents the strongest case and offers the greatest strategic and economic benefits. LJLA has been a supporter of this proposal for some time, recognising Heathrow Airport’s expansion plans as the best proposal for the country. Liverpool needs to access global connectivity to better meet the needs of the region it serves, however capacity constraints in the South East have meant that the opportunity to re-establish regular flights to the UK’s hub airport has

simply not existed for some time. An expanded Heathrow would offer the opportunity for UK airports such as Liverpool, to further grow their networks, something that is crucial for generating growth across the whole country, not just London and the south east. Andrew Cornish, CEO of Liverpool John Lennon Airport commented, “Liverpool John Lennon Airport welcomes this news and now urges the Government to give the goahead of this important expansion of Heathrow so that regional airports such as Liverpool can soon benefit too by the opening up of access to the UK’s hub airport for improved worldwide connectivity.”

Welcome to the latest edition of Voyage, our Airport magazine. It’s been a busy period for Liverpool John Lennon Airport with passenger numbers 8% higher during the summer months compared to the same period in 2014, as the region’s travellers took advantage of a number of new services operating from here. However, in recent weeks we have announced further growth in our business too. Flybe have announced a new service to Edinburgh and an additional daily departure on both their Isle of Man and Belfast City services. In addition, next year will see Spanish Airline Vueling operate from Liverpool for the first time with a three times weekly scheduled service to Barcelona. Finally Czech Airlines have committed to return to Liverpool next year and repeat its twice weekly Summer scheduled service to Prague. It is an exciting time for everyone here at the Airport . Over the past 12 months we have secured flights from 5 new airlines and announced 11 new services to 7 new destinations, bringing over 90 additional flights per week. Add these developments to the terminal enhancements that are now underway aimed at further improving the passenger experience and I hope you will agree that we are working hard to create the airport our region loves. I hope you enjoy this latest edition of our magazine and we look forward to seeing you at the Airport again soon. Andrew Cornish CEO, Liverpool John Lennon Airport

Museo Nacional del Prado Madrid, Spain

Calle Ruiz de Alarcon 23 fly to Madrid with easyJet and Ryanair

Handily, the Prado helps visitors out by collating some of the most important works in its vast collection into timed routes. There’s nothing worse that wasting half your time in a large museum or gallery wandering the halls in search of a favourite piece. The Prado is adorned with masterpieces of European art and it’s no surprise that Spanish artists such as Velazquez and Goya feature. But it’s not all about paintings. It also houses a fine collection of the Decorative Arts - glassware, ceramics and furniture included. General entry is 14 euros.

2

Museum Kampa Prague, Czech Republic Major cities have major museums, but it’s often the quirky or less heralded that provide the most rewarding visit due to the unusual nature of their spaces or the type of artefact contained within. Open for just over a decade, Museum Kampa houses an important collection of central European modern art both inside and outside a former mill. The building layout is not the traditional form of a gallery space due to its previous use, but this only adds to the charm of the place. The line of yellow penguins outside the building will always raise a smile. U Sovovych Mlynu, 2 Mala Strana fly to Prague with Czech Airlines

Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Netherlands Sometimes when you say you are visiting a particular city there is an expectation that certain places have to be on the itinerary - and that certainly applies to the Rijksmuseum. This landmark has benefited from an extensive, ten-year overhaul which allows it to show off some of the most iconic works in Dutch history to their greatest effect. No fewer than 80 galleries tell the story of Dutch art and history spanning 800 years and take in works by Vermeer, Frans Hals and Rembrandt along the way. Spread over four floors, it’s an overwhelming collection of paintings, silver, delftware, jewellery, costumes and more.

An added bonus is that the estate also houses the magnificent Serralves Villa, an Art Deco gem which temporarily housed some of the art works before the museum opened in the late 1990s.

Dublin

Blogging the World Ten years living in Dublin and Laura McDonnell is still finding plenty about her adopted city to get excited about. She shares these passions through her blog, The Dublin Diary, and picks out some of the city’s highlights here for Voyage.

Why did you start a blog? I love to travel and when I do I always make sure to read the local blogs so that I can get the inside track on all the hidden gems. One day I thought I could do the same in the city I love. Hence The Dublin Diary was born. Where would you recommend visitors head to… …get a sense of history? Take a tour of Kilmainham Gaol the place of confinement and execution of leaders of successive rebellions against British rule in Ireland. The 1916 Rising was without a doubt a pivotal turning point in Irish history and with its centenary coming up next year this is definitely a “must see”. Be warned though, tours fill up fast so get there early! …eat with locals? Hidden away on the rooftop of The

Workman’s Club you’ll find Wowburger. It’s probably the best burger you’ll get in Dublin. The crowd here is young, funloving and definitely local. Howth Head

…escape the bustle of the city? Howth to the north of Dublin is easily reached by train, within 20 minutes you’re whisked away to a picturesque village complete with trawlers, fishmongers and amazing seafood restaurants. Take the bus to Howth Summit and enjoy breathtaking views out over the cliffs and across the Irish Sea as you meander back to the village.

Sophie’s Restaurant

… have a night to remember? Lillies Bordello has long established itself as THE place to go on the Irish clubbing scene. Once you make it past the stern looking bouncers keep your eyes peeled, this is also the playground of Dublin’s rich and famous! The Olympia

The Little Museum of Dublin

…take in a view they will never forget? From the outside The Dean Hotel looks like any other building on Harcourt Street but take the lift to the top floor to Sophie’s Restaurant and you’ll be rewarded with stunning views across Dublin. I’d definitely recommend treating yourself to brunch here. …try something that is authentically “Dublin”? Walking into the bar in The Gravediggers in Glasnevin is a bit like going back in time. The pub has been in the hands of the same family, the Kavanaghs, since it first opened its doors in 1833. It borders Glasnevin Cemetery which is worth a visit in its own right. The pub’s namesakes used to knock on the wall to order pints which were delivered by the owner through the cemetery’s railings.

century Dublin. It’s an eclectic collection donated by Dubliners some more well-known than others. You’ll find receipts, furniture, milk bottles and even a car. It’s sure to keep you enthralled for hours. …take in a concert? The Olympia is literally a Dublin institution. Over its 117 years anyone who is anyone has appeared here. Musicians such as REM and Radiohead and actors like Brendan Gleeson and Stephen Rea have all performed here. Whether it’s a gig, a play or a comedy act,

The Olympia is a fantastic venue. …get romantic? A church isn’t a place you’d normally go if you want to get romantic with your significant other but Whitefriar Church on Aungier Street is a bit special. Inside you’ll find relics of St Valentine. You’ll regularly see people popping in to pay homage to the saint, I’m sure the church has even seen a few marriage proposals! ...be awe inspired? The “Taking of Christ” by Caravaggio had long been

thought of as lost when it turned up adorning the walls of a Jesuit dining room on Lesson Street in Dublin in 1990. The famous painting now hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland and is considered one of its finest paintings. Since its discovery it has awestruck and entranced visitors and Dubliners alike. Frank McKenna DLIB Chief Executive

For three weeks next summer, Liverpool will, for the second time, host the UK International Festival for Business. This jamboree will begin on 13th June, and will attract thousands of business leaders, decision makers, investors and entrepreneurs from all over the world. For UK PLC the event celebrates all that is great in British enterprise, and each week of the festival will have a distinctive theme; with seven days focussed on manufacturing, a week on the digital and creative sector, plus a green energy/ environmental industry theme. But businesses from any sector, particularly those who are looking to export, will find this festival of interest. The speakers that are lined up are hugely impressive. An army of UKTI officials will be on hand to offer advice, support and guidance to delegates on any international market on the planet. And, in terms of a showcase for you, well you can make as much of it as you want, as there will be a ‘business club’ within the festival hub where you can meet and greet potential suppliers and customers. So, if you are a business owner and you are ambitious to grow your company (and who isn’t?) then Liverpool is a must visit city next June. Not only will you have the opportunity to sell, transfer knowledge, network and connect; you will be doing it in a beautiful city where the phrase ‘work hard, play hard’ was surely born. AUTUMN LEAVES Autumn is a season which richly rewards being outdoors. The temperature is dropping, the colours are changing and the light is getting ever so slightly softer as the sun dips in the sky. Europe offers some fabulous sights as foliage turns from its bright summer hues to earthier reds and browns. Find a trail and take a wander - but remember to keep your camera handy. That breathtaking shot might be just around the corner.

Tuscany, Italy The Tuscan colours contain less red than is found in Northern Europe, but the green, golds and browns - particularly as the vineyards give up their harvest - are a striking contrast to the vivid hues found in the summer heat. Go in late Autumn and join an olive oil tasting tour as the olives are picked and pressed at any number of olive presses in the region. fly to Pisa with Ryanair

Transylvania, Romania Transylvania might conjure up images of remote castles lit by lightning and mysterious Counts who only come out at night, but for those with a taste for adventure it has some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Europe. Mount Stewart, County Down The gardens at this National Trust property take on a brilliant palette in Autumn as the maples, myrtles and other trees come into their late-year foliage. The gardens were created by Edith, Lady Londonderry, and include an Italian, Spanish and Sunken Garden amongst them. The venue also has a restored house following a three-year project and this is open daily to the public with thousands of items of family memorabilia on show.

Natural selection Autumn in Europe

Autumn is a wonderful time to choose to head to some of Europe’s more popular locations, particularly the likes of Tuscany and Southern France. It has the advantage of slightly cooler temperatures which makes walking and exploring easier and more pleasant than in the often searing heat of summer. Also, you are more likely to miss the crowds that flock to these regions in the peak holiday months such is their popularity. Plus it’s the time of year when harvests are in full swing meaning that local produce is at its freshest and most abundant offering travellers a true taste of the region they are visiting.

A new version is now on the road in a mammoth 40-week tour starring Claire Sweeney as Velma von Tussle – a part she was looking forward to playing as she got reacquainted with the show

`And you do find there is a difference between audiences; when I did Educating Rita we’d find people would be laughing at different points.’

`I’ve just listened to the soundtrack again and it’s a fantastic show. I saw it first in the West End years ago. `Velma is a great part. She’s not a very nice person, so it’s something you can really get your teeth into.’ The tour will stop off at the Liverpool Empire from October 12-17 and at the Manchester Palace Theatre from October 26-31 – amongst numerous destinations the length and breadth of the country. `It’s very different on tour to a fixed run where you have the stability of

The Empire date will provide an opportunity for something of a family reunion, especially as Claire will have her young son, Jaxon, with her. `I’m looking forward to coming to Liverpool which will give Jaxon a chance to see his grandparents which will be nice. He’s with me all the time and I’m lucky that he’s at an age where I can still take him with me.’ Away from the stage, Claire has seen plenty of the world - not least through a spell as a singer on cruise liners, but her travelling life began with family holidays and led to a lifelong fondness for one destination in particular.

`I think my earliest memories are holidays when I was young to Majorca and Tenerife, so I’ve always had a real fondness for them. `In fact, I’m now lucky enough to have a home in Majorca, and I also love Barbados as well, and I try to go there each January.’ And it seems that Claire has found her ideal travelling companion in Jaxon who hasn’t been fazed by air travel. `He actually did a lot of travelling when he was still inside me including going to Australia, so maybe he got a taste for it! He was fantastic on his first flight, absolutely as good as gold.’ Claire’s big break for British TV audiences came playing Lindsey Corkhill on the Channel 4 soap, Brookside, and her singing career was developed during several years as an entertainer on cruise liners – which opened her eyes to new destinations. `On the cruise ships I was able to see places that I found I would want to go back to, and also places I wouldn’t! `I used to love going to places like Russia where I might not have chosen to go just for myself, and I liked Norway because I suffered from a bit of seasickness, and it was always so calm there!’ But the world’s a big place and Claire still harbours a couple of travel dreams which have yet to be fulfilled.

`There are still things that I’d really like to do. I’d like to charter a yacht and sail around the Greek islands. I’d also like to visit Cape Town because people have told me it’s absolutely beautiful, and I’d also like to take a cruise in Alaska.’ But wherever she goes, Claire still sings the praises of her home city. `Liverpool itself is so exciting, and has become a real destination, particularly since the Capital of Culture year, and Liverpool Airport is absolutely brilliant now. From Liverpool John Lennon Airport you have the chance to book either a day-trip or short break to visit Santa as he prepares for Christmas from his workshop in the frozen North. Santa's Lapland is offering guests the chance to experience the magic of Santa’s home, Lapland, this winter with its Santa Breaks programme. Santa's Lapland's Santa Breaks holidays offer a choice of three or four night stays in Levi and Ylläs, located just north of the Arctic Circle. The high standards of accommodation and warm, friendly atmospheres in these popular resorts make for a great family holiday to remember. The Santa's Lapland Santa Breaks packages include flights and resort transfers (optional half board is available from £20 per person per night) as well as one special Santa excursion - the choice of either meeting Santa in his workshop or

having a dinner with Santa. The Santa’s workshop excursion is a magical jaunt to one of Santa's enchanting workshops where guests will enjoy an exclusive private family meeting with Santa himself! Guests will take part in supervised festive games and help the elves bake gingerbread biscuits. Outdoors the family will meet Rudolph the Reindeer, ride on an Icelandic horse, catch the snowmobile train or have great fun tobogganing in the snow. Santa's Lapland offers a special dinner with Santa (even for guests who are booked on a self-catering basis) for guests to enjoy a traditional British Christmas food and Lappish specialities followed by party games and a disco. Santa will arrive with his reindeer and all the children will have the opportunity to meet him individually and receive a small gift and certificate. Accommodation on these trips is in

either the Yillas Log Cabins or Akas (Snow Elf) Hotel and Alp Apartments. The well-equipped, high-quality, idyllic log cabins dotted around the woods are 500-850m from one of either Äkäs Hotel or Kaltio Hotel where guests may pre-book optional half board. Most excursions depart from these two hotels. Prices start from £638 per person and £3,190 for a total party. The Akas Hotel is an atmospheric family-friendly hotel conveniently situated in the heart of this traditional unspoilt Lappish community. Highly recommended well-equipped excellent quality apartments are situated 100m from the main hotel in a peaceful scenic location. The hotel acts as the hub for our Santa programme in Ylläs and all excursions leave from the door. The village centre is a five minutes’ walk away. Prices start from £733 per person and £4,398 for a total party. For more information on Santa's Lapland holidays visit www.santaslapland.com For a day-trip excursion, you can choose the wonderful experience organised by Newmarket Holidays. Your specially chartered flight from Liverpool will be the only 'Santa'

flight to Pajala on this day, and numbers are strictly limited so that you have time to appreciate every magical moment. On a day full of wonder, take the 'secret' path through the forest and follow the twinkling lights to Santa's log cabin, where he'll be waiting to greet each child personally. Enjoy a magical sleigh ride pulled by reindeer, a husky-drawn 'sledge safari', and a thrilling drive on a high-

powered snowmobile. A two-course lunch is served during the day. Hot drinks will also be available and thermal garments are supplied on arrival. Between activities, there will no doubt be opportunities to have fun in the snow, with toboggan rides, snowball fights and the chance to build a snowman. Adult prices are from £499 and children’s prices for those aged between 2-15 are from £469.

A LITTLE TASTE OF EUROPE Everyone likes to indulge a little while they’re away. It wouldn’t be a holiday without generously sampling the local food and drink. But what about combining your break with a food and drink festival? These are common across the continent, bringing together the best local produce, chefs, restaurants, brewers and winemakers. So here’s our guide on where to go to get fed and watered - in the nicest possible ways.

O Grove Seafood Festival Spain No seafood subject is left unexplored during this ten-day festival at the resort of O Grove on Spain’s west coast. It’s been running since 1963 and up to 200,000 people are attracted during the festival which basically brings together the two elements

on which the local economy is based tourism and fishing. The festival includes special events, tastings, competitions, music and folk dancing and you can take your pick from baked scallops, grilled razor clams and much more This year’s event last from October 5-14. fly to Porto with Ryanair

Oktoberfest Munich Nothing can prepare you for your first Oktoberfest. It really is one gigantic party as hundreds of thousands of people gather to sample some of the finest quality beers in huge halls dedicated to supping steins. Once the first keg has been officially tapped, the celebrations can begin, and be prepared to make a lot of new friends as the halls get extremely busy. Sample oxen specialities in the Ochsenbraterei or stick to pork knuckle and sauerkraut, washed down with an Augustiner - from Munich’s oldest brewery dating back to 1328. Barcelona Degusta Barcelona All the family can enjoy this celebration of food, especially as entry for those under eight is free, and there are special themed activities for children.

Salon du Chocolat

Adults, however, might be more tempted by the creative sessions on pairing wine and cheese, or creating brilliant desserts.

Paris Promising a line-up of international chefs, pastry chefs and master chocolatiers demonstrating their skills, it’s hard not to start salivating at the thought of what might be conjured up at this festival of all things chocolate.

These sessions are in addition to the produce on sale at the festival venues - Fira de Barcelona, Hall 1 and Placa de Univers of Montjuic, located in the city’s Placa Espanya.

There’s even a chocolate-inspired fashion show during proceedings, and the chance to learn how to create a cocktail you sip through a straw topped with foam you eat with a spoon. Tastings in the chocosphere sound too wonderful for words, and the event takes place at Porte de Versailles, right on Metro line 12.

This event usually takes place in September.

This year’s event takes place between October 28 and November 1. fly to Paris with easyJet

fly to Barcelona with easyJet, Ryanair and Vueling

Sagra della Castagna Soriano For more than just food, this could be the festival to head for. It is entitled the Chestnut Festival, taking place at a time when chestnuts are falling from the trees. The gastronomic element is the

Convivium Secretum when four taverns serve meals from recipes hundreds of years old, and banqueting tables are laid out in traditional manner while historical re-enactments are staged.

This year’s festival takes place from October 1-18. fly to Pisa with Ryanair

Our children have done most of the UK’s major theme parks so we thought we might do something a little different at half-term. Is there a European park we could head to? There certainly is. Well, more than one, actually. But we would recommend trying the PortAventura Park south of Barcelona and very easily accessed via Reus Airport. PortAventura features more than 40 rides which it categorises as Fast, Breathtaking or Intense and these should challenge any jaded thrillseeker. Plus there are more family-friendly attractions and a range of themed activity areas.

Whatever your travel-related conundrum, talk to us at Voyage magazine and let us help you on your way... Just for once, I fancy the idea of some sunshine and warmth to help celebrate Christmas. Do you have any suggestions? We would definitely recommend the Canary Islands for having the kind of climate which will help keep the chill well away over the holiday period. Average temperatures in December are around 18°C which makes it very pleasant indeed, with around five hours of sunshine every day. You could even enjoy the slightly surreal experience of beach sunbathing on Christmas Day. Be careful though, Christmas Eve is, for many, the evening when the main Christmas meal is eaten, so some hotel dining rooms and restaurants may be looking to close early. I am planning to hire a car when I arrive in Berlin. Is there anything I need to know about driving in Germany? Make sure your car is supplied with the following reflective jackets, warning triangle, headlamp beam deflectors (You will either need deflector stickers or have to adjust the beam manually) and a first aid kit If you’re driving in the city, trams in motion must be overtaken on the right. If the space is inadequate, they may be overtaken on the left. In one-way streets, trams may be overtaken on either side. Priority must be given to passengers boarding or alighting from stationary trams.

What are the current rules for taking liquids through security? I don’t want to be the one who causes a hold-up in the line! There are restrictions on the amount of liquids you can take in your hand luggage. If possible, pack liquids in your hold baggage (luggage that you check in). The description of `liquids’ covers all drinks, including water, liquid or semi-liquid foods, cosmetics and toiletries, sprays, including shaving foam, hairspray and spray deodorants, toothpaste, hair and shower gel, and contact lens solution. If you do take liquids in your hand luggage then the containers must hold no more than 100ml, and these containers must be in a single, transparent, resealable plastic bag, which holds no more than a litre and measures approximately 20cm x 20cm. The contents must fit comfortably inside the bag so it can be sealed and the bag must not be knotted or tied at the top. You’re limited to one plastic bag per person and you must show the bag at the airport security point Liquids in containers larger than 100ml generally can’t go through security even if the container is only part full. There are some exemptions. You can take liquid containers larger than 100ml through security if they are for essential medical purposes, for special dietary requirements or contain baby food or baby milk.

The park features a number of hotels, plus there’s an Aquatic Park and a golf course, as well as spectacular shows and entertainment. Day tickets for adults are 45 euros, but there are decent discounts if you’re planning to make your visit last a couple of days.

Once you’re out of the city, the recommended maximum speed on the autobahn is 130 km/h although signs will warn you of reduced speed zones, usually around cities. ISSUE 8

BARCELONA Barcelona is one of the great cities of the world - and within easy reach of Liverpool for all kinds of trips. Whether you choose to dip in and out over a couple of days, or stay with the family for a little longer, you won’t be disappointed by what this magnificent city has to offer. The capital of Catalonia is famed for many things, not least its history, architecture and massively successful football club, but you can discover more about what makes it a must-visit destination in our guide.

FOOTBALL It’s no surprise that FC Barcelona is the dominant sports brand, but it’s more likely that only students of the European game are aware that the city hosts two top-flight clubs. Although overshadowed by their illustrious neighbours, Reial Club Deportiu Espanyol de Barcelona, or Espanyol for short, have a long and distinguished history being founder members of La Liga and four times Spanish Cup winners. However, if you’re going as a tourist then the full-on tour at FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium takes some beating. Just 23 euros gets you behind the scenes of one of the world’s great sporting institutions and includes the dazzling museum. It’s easily accessible, too, with good transport links.

FAMILY Barcelona has become such a favourite of the weekend break crowd that few people seem to think of it as a destination for families. But there is plenty to keep children happy across this wonderful city A highlight is certainly the Barcelona Aquarium which is the largest

48

Voyage

Mediterranean-themed aquarium in the world. It houses a vast collection of species and even offers diving with shark experiences. The city zoo is open every day - including Christmas Day! - and features a range of animals in their specially created enclosure. There’s everything from

komodo dragons to a fascinating gorilla exhibition. Then there are the rides, the views and the chance to ride the funicular railway if you choose to visit Tibidabo amusement park. The Sky Walk gives you the chance to take outstanding photos of the city, and there are both historic and modern thrill rides to experience.

MUSEUMS The marvellous Museu Picasso concentrates on the artist’s early and formative years but still boasts a collection of some 3,800 artefacts. It’s best to book online to avoid the potential for a long wait to see this outstanding collection. The long and fascinating history of the Catalan region is fully explored in

the Museu d’Historia de Catalunya, situated overlooking the port. Permanent exhibitions cover the early pre-history, the birth of a nation and right up to the present day. It’s also worth taking in the views from the rooftop. In common with Liverpool, Barcelona has a Maritime Museum covering seafaring from 1750-1850.

Look out especially for the 60-metre long royal galley on which more than 200 people would have rowed. But if 16th century boats aren’t your thing, then maybe the Barcelona Centre for Contemporary Culture is just the job. You’re as likely to find an exhibition on Mexican Lucha Libre wrestling as you are one on African design.

EATING OUT This should be one of the great pleasures of any visit to Spain, and Barcelona offers a fabulous array of restaurants and bars in which to indulge your gastronomic preferences. Tapas are obviously at the heart of many an evening out and settling down for a drink and a couple of small plates in one or two places might not be the worst way of exploring the city and what it has to offer. The legendary Cal Pep at Placa de les Olles near the waterfront specializes in freshly caught seafood and presents diners with whatever has been caught that day. For character and history as well as great food, head to El Xampanyet on Carrer de Montcada near the Picasso Museum. It’s atmospheric, popular and has its tapas washed down by a homemade cava.

ARCHITECTURE One man dominates the Barcelona cityscape and that’s Antoni Gaudi. His work has been granted World Heritage status by UNESCO and adds drama, vision and breathtaking scale to the city’s built form. His greatest project, the Sagrada Familia, is not due to be completed until 2027 actually more than 100 years after his death - but it remains a staggering undertaking and possibly the most distinctive

HOTELS Picking somewhere to stay is very much down to budget, location and overall personal preference as there is no shortage of accommodation. If you want something in the heart of the city then the boutique Hotel Pulitzer ticks many boxes. Just off the Plaza Catalunya and close to La Rambla, it’s smart, chic and comfortable. The terrace is a great place to wind down to music and with a cocktail. If you’ve got the budget, try the Hotel Arts overlooking the Mediterranean and close to the marina. Its staggeringly beautiful architecture opens up to a haven of calm and peace. For those seeking a little quirkiness with their holiday then try the three-star Hotel Room Mate Emma. It’s funky and cool, and situated close to some decent nightlife.

church building ever conceived. There are examples of his work throughout the city, notably at Park Guell which houses some of his mosaic design style. Other fine properties to look out for include the Casa Mila on the Passeig de Gràcia, which was his last piece of civil work and the Casa Batilo which is also known as the House of Bones because of its skeletal qualities.

TRANSPORT If you want to make the most of your time in the city you would be as well to get a ticket for the hop-on, hop-off Bus Turistic service which operates three routes which you can switch between depending on which attractions you’re looking to see. It’s a dependable and frequent service. There is also an extensive Metro line service which connects the city, and there’s an integrated fare system which allows passengers to obtain a free transfer to another form of

SHOPPING public transport within an hour and 15 minutes of buying the ticket. The bus service is frequent and accessible with a fleet of more than 1,000 adapted buses, and a regular night bus service to all parts of the city with services either stopping at or departing from the Plaza Catalunya. The Aerobus runs daily between Plaza Catalunya and Barcelona airport every ten minutes.

It’s no surprise that a major European city like Barcelona has plenty to offer the confirmed shopaholic - and that range covers everything from exclusive designer labels to some of the best market shopping you’ll experience anywhere. The latter can be found in La Boqueria which is a huge covered market just off La Rambla and is worth a wander around just for the atmosphere even if you’re not intending to buy anything. Of course you’ll still come out with a bag or two. Bags of a different kind might be higher on the agenda along Passeig de Gràcia where some serious money can be spent in the Prada, Gucci and Louis Vuitton stores. No visit would be complete without a quick trip around El Corte Ingles on Plaza Catalunya. It’s not the swishest any more, but you wouldn’t leave Oxford Street without dipping into Selfridge’s would you?
