News from Liverpool John Lennon Airport and beyond

New Prague Route

Passengers can 'Czech' out the latest service to Prague A twice weekly service to one of Europe’s most beautiful cities

Liverpool will become the airline’s only UK destination and is one of a number of new European routes announced by Czech Airlines as part of their latest growth plans.

Prague is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic and it is often described as one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, with a history that goes back a millennium. The city boasts more than ten major museums, along with numerous theatres, galleries, cinemas, and other historical exhibits with a modern public transportation system that connects the city. Andrew Cornish, CEO of Liverpool John Lennon Airport commented, “This is great news and another clear indication of our growing reputation, with airlines recognising the business opportunities available by serving the North West market via Liverpool.”

Flights will commence on 18th May, departing on Mondays and Fridays operating year round, departing from Liverpool at 08:55 and return flights departing from Prague at 07:00. The schedule will be ideal for leisure and business passengers alike giving travellers the opportunity to spend either a weekend or a working week in Prague.

“Our research shows that significant volumes of passengers already travel between the Liverpool City Region and Prague but have to fly from other UK airports. This new service will now mean that the region’s passengers will now be able to travel with the convenience of flying from their airport of choice.”

Czech Airlines is the flagship carrier of the Czech Republic, which has been in operation since October 1923, making it one of the five oldest airlines in the world. Czech Airlines is a member of the SkyTeam alliance with carriers including Air France, KLM and Delta Air Lines.

Flights are now on sale at www.czechairlines.co.uk

Czech Airlines, a member of the global SkyTeam Alliance, has announced that it is to commence a twice weekly scheduled service from Liverpool john Lennon Airport (LJLA) to Prague, the capital of The Czech Republic, starting in May 2015.

“This is great news and another clear indication of our growing reputation”

NEW BELFAST ROUTE TAKES OFF Champagne surprise for first passenger on inaugural flight Flybe’s brand new route between Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Belfast City Airport has gone into service. Passengers have the choice of up to three flights a day with the first departing from Liverpool at 08:25 and the last returning from Belfast City at 19:15. There is one return flight on both Saturday and Sunday. The summer schedule, which begins on 29th March, will see the addition of a fourth return flight each weekday and an extra rotation on Saturdays. To mark the inaugural flight, Jordan Morgan who was the first passenger to check-in, was presented with a bottle of champagne courtesy of the airport and complimentary flights from Flybe. Jordan, an aviation enthusiast, booked to travel especially so that he could be on the first flight.

New Route

Managers at LJLA believe this new route could generate an additional 50,000 departing passengers per year through the airport. Belfast has a well-established Business and Financial Services sector and the new service is expected to be particularly popular with the region’s business passengers. Mark Povall, Director of Air Service Development for Liverpool John Lennon Airport, added: “This is the first new route of the year for the airport and it was great to be able to welcome the first passengers on the service. We’re delighted to see the growth of Flybe’s business from here.” Paul Simmons, Flybe’s Chief Commercial Officer, said: “We are committed to providing easy and affordable connectivity throughout the UK at competitive prices with maximum flexibility and choice. Business customers will benefit from our speedy city-to-city connection, football fans from NI can now enjoy easy travel to their favourite Liverpool stadium and the thousands of cross-water students engaged in further education will also benefit from competitive fares and Flybe’s generous student baggage allowance.” Full details of the schedule are available at www.flybe.com

WIZZ ADDS TO GDANSK SCHEDULE Budapest based low cost carrier Wizz Air is to add additional capacity between Liverpool John Lennon Airport and its Polish base of Gdansk.

JOE'S IN HIS NEW LIVERPOOL HOME Coffee shop joins airport family This Spring, a brand new Joe’s Coffee House has been introduced to the family at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. They’ve been beavering away, getting ready for the big day for months now and are truly excited about getting up and running.

A team of great people have been brought together to bring wonderful food and drink to the airport including - but not limited to - barista-made coffee, fresh baked pastries, delicious sandwiches, warming soups and stews, filled jacket potatoes, smoothies, juices and sweet treats. Joe’s is all about greeting guests with a warm welcome and making them all feel right at home;

whether they’re up for a quick grab and go on their way through the lounge or a bit of R&R before their flight. Joe’s understands that early mornings or long bouts of travelling don’t always put a smile on travellers’ faces, but they do believe that smiles make the world go round so that’s what you’ll get when you stop in at Joe’s - a friendly smile and great refreshment to turn your day around morning, noon & night!

Welcome to the latest edition of Voyage, our Airport magazine. It’s been a busy start of the year for the Airport with the launch of Flybe’s three times daily service to Belfast City, followed by the news that Czech Airlines - another new airline for Liverpool - are due to commence flights to Prague at the end of May. However it’s not just the choice of services where we have been making progress recently. We are working hard to make Liverpool the Airport our region loves and in order to do this, customers need to be at the very heart of all we do. As a consequence we have signed up to an independent passenger satisfaction benchmarking programme, which compares the views of our customers with those of other similar airports.

STAFF GENEROSITY AIDS FOODBANK COLLECTION Hundreds of local families benefit from donations A Liverpool foodbank has been delighted to accept hundreds of items of much needed food, groceries, and basic toiletries, all donated by Airport employees.

The Airport recently started working in partnership with Business in the Community (BITC) to collect food items that will help the foodbank run by St Leonard’s Youth and Community Centre in Bootle. The centre highlighted a ‘shopping list’ of items that hundreds of families, need most,

and all departments across the Airport were then asked to go through the ‘shopping list’. Thanks to the generosity of airport staff, hundreds of necessary items, were collected and delivered to the centre by colleagues, so that many families would see the benefit.

According to our customers, latest results show that Liverpool is one of the best performing airports when it comes to finding your way, checking in, security inspection, speed of baggage delivery and passport and visa inspection. It’s no surprise that no long queues and a relaxed hassle free environment are what our passengers tell us they like best about flying from Liverpool. Having said this, we also recognise that we need to make improvements in other areas too, by rectifying those aspects of the airport experience that customers don’t like and you will also see a number of improvements underway in the coming weeks & months to address such issues. I hope you enjoy this latest edition of our magazine and we look forward to seeing you at the Airport again soon. Andrew Cornish CEO, Liverpool John Lennon Airport

Few sports combine top class action with the chance for some serious socialising like horse racing does. We’re going to take you on a tour of what Europe has to offer and then bring it all back home for the big one...

Dublin Republic of Ireland

Not many countries are as passionate or knowledgeable about horse racing as the Irish. If you’ve witnessed an Irish winner coming home up the hill at the Cheltenham Festival you’ll know what it is to be consumed by their enthusiasm. To experience it on home turf, then Leopardstown is the place to head for - a mere six miles from the city and easily accessible via the LUAS light rail in just over 20 minutes. Race meetings take place throughout the year with a mixture of both flat and jump racing, including some

8

of the biggest events in the calendar such as the Hennessy Gold Cup and the first day of the Irish Champions weekend in September. The second day is held at The Curragh, which itself is only 35kms from Dublin. Admission to Leopardstown is incredibly good value with adult ticket prices starting at 15 Euros. Good deals can be had for hospitality at the course, and there are tie-ins with local hotels if you want to make a stay of it. Check it all out at www.leopardstown.com Fly to Dublin with Ryanair

Paris France

Racing enthusiasts make an Autumn pilgrimage to Paris for the Qatar Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp, and rightly so. The Arc is one of the great flat races of the year, attracting the finest thoroughbreds from across the globe. But racing in Paris needn’t be confined to the spectacle surrounding Longchamp on Arc day. A short train ride out of the capital will take you to the glorious surroundings of Chantilly where two of the French classics are run.

Warsaw Poland

Poland is another country with a long tradition of competitive horse racing, and a trip to the Sluzewiec Racetrack in Warsaw will give you a genuine local experience. Free entry to the course is a bonus and the track remains well cared for within an extensive area of parkland.

10

The main clubhouse is an architectural reminder of the 1930s when it was built, but while it could do with a little TLC, there’s nothing to stop you enjoying a cheap day out with a little wager and some competitive racing thrown in. The Prix du Jockey Club and Prix de Diane are both staged on the course which benefits from the glorious backdrop of the magnificent Chateau de Chantilly. Catch your train from Gare du Nord, and alight at Chantilly just 50 km or so away. For more details or racing in Paris visit www.france-galop.com which is a comprehensive guide to the sport. Berlin Germany

There’s a relaxed family atmosphere to be found when you go racing at Rennbahn Hoppegarten on the outskirts of Berlin. The course does its best to make the experience a proper day out for the family with children’s attractions to run alongside the usual race-day activities, and visitors allowed to take their dogs to the course which is something of a rarity. Having a picnic alongside the track is a popular pastime, too. However, that’s not to say that racing takes a back seat. The course has been staging race

meetings since the late 19th Century, with the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Berlin one of the highlights of the calendar. It’s also a national landmark, having been awarded that status by the Federal Government in 2013. The course lost some of its sparkle during its time behind the Iron Curtain, but strenuous - and successful - efforts have been made in recent years to restore its fortunes. Aintree Liverpool

One of the absolute highlights of the country’s sporting calendar is the Crabbie’s Grand National, and we’re lucky enough to have it right on our doorstep at Aintree. The National meeting has now also become a byword for dressing up as special outfits are planned months in advance, particularly for Ladies Day. The Grand National’s history goes back almost two centuries and any number of great sporting stories have emerged from its herculean test of four miles and four furlongs over the most demanding fences in the business. Legendary names like three-time winner Red Rum, 100-1 outsider Foinavon and the desperately unlucky Devon Loch have passed into folklore, as have fences such as Becher’s Brook, the Canal Turn and Valentine’s. It’s also the race on which most money is gambled in the year, and there can’t be an office which doesn’t run a sweep on the result. To take your place at this year’s three-day event which begins on April 9th, go to www.thecrabbiesgrandnational.co.uk for ticket information.

Belfast

Blogging the World That Belfast Girl, aka Gemma-Louise Bond, is a young blogger chronicling the fashionable elements of Belfast life.

Why did you start the blog? I initially started blogging in the summer of 2011 whilst I waited for an emergency surgery. Not very glamorous, but it kept me amused. My blog started under a different name but now as That Belfast Girl, I get to explore the city I love and interact with my readers about what they are loving too. Where would you recommend visitors head to… … get a sense of history? The Crumlin Road Gaol has recently been renovated and is the perfect place to reflect on Northern Ireland’s history. The Queen even mentioned her visit in her speech on Christmas Day! They also to some great tours of the ghostly variety if that is your thing. The Ulster Museum at Botanic Gardens is also great with lots of artifacts from the Spanish Armada’s wrecks around the North Coast of Ireland. 14

Voyage

… eat with the locals? The Mourne Seafood Bar is a fabulous place to visit to sample the local catch and their oysters are second to none. The setting is also very traditional and intimate. Their sister restaurant Home (located close to City Hall) is also fantastic, especially if you are vegetarian or vegan as they offer some of the most innovative dishes in the city. … escape the bustle of the city? Galgorm Estate and Spa is a 163 acre parkland with a hotel, spa and amazing dining experiences on offer. Go for a walk around the beautiful scenery, lounge in the spa or stuff your face with delicious treats at their Afternoon Tea. Truly a world away from the busy city.

… have a night to remember? Eat at Deane’s, take the short walk around to Bert’s Jazz Bar at the Merchant Hotel and take in the fantastic music (and cocktails)! If you are feeling super fancy, I recommend a stay at The Merchant Hotel and a treatment at their fabulous spa. … take in a view they’ll never forget? Take a lift up to the Dome in Victoria Square. It’s free and offers stunning views right across the city. At night, it’s even more spectacular.

a Sunday also offers a true look at Belfast- lots of tasty treats, live music and great banter from the traders. … be surprised? The Titanic Visitor Centre is great for history buffs but the sheer architecture of it will blow your mind. The exhibitions offer interactive experiences of the precious shipbuilding legacy in Northern Ireland.

… take in a concert?

… be awe-inspired?

The Ulster Hall is a gorgeous building and offers the most magical acoustics in an intimate setting. The Ulster Orchestra often plays lunch time concerts.

It’s a bit of a hike but taking a walk up the Cavehill offers a view of the luscious greenery that we are so famous for. Get your walking shoes on and start at Belfast Castle. Your heart rate will be up but the views will bring tears to your eyes.

… get romantic? Robinson and Cleaver restaurant facing City Hall, offers a beautiful menu of flavours. You can eat out on the balcony, looking out over City Hall. This is beautiful on a crisp evening as the City Hall is lit up in an array of colours.

… try something that is very authentically “Belfast”? In terms of food, an Ulster Fry is one not to be missed. Soda and potato bread feature and it is a must taste, especially if you’ve had one too many Guinness pints the night before. Summer

body time This is usually the time people start to book their yearly summer holiday. This is also the time of year when people jump on the health and fitness bandwagon, some lasting longer than others. So what does it take to lose those unwanted pounds, so you feel less bloated, more energised, leaving less chance of you being embarrassed by your body shape on the beach come the summer time?

Sleep Try and get the optimal 7-8 hours of sleep a night. By not getting enough sleep, your body’s stress hormones are increased during the day, making it likely that you will make the wrong food choices, usually sugar/carbohydrate related.

20

Voyage

Diet A clean eating diet, cutting out sugar and processed foods will help rid the body of toxins and you will quickly start to drop unwanted body fat. A diet based on good quality protein (chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, but more importantly beans,

lentils, quinoa, chickpeas etc) will keep you full for longer, steadying your blood sugar levels and managing your fat storage hormones. Carbohydrate sources need to come from fibrous vegetables, fruit, unsalted nuts and legumes, not the

usual bread, pasta, cereal, white potatoes etc. Good fats are also important in helping burn unwanted body fat, try to cook in coconut oil, drizzle olive oil on vegetables and salads; nuts, olives and avocado are good too.

Water Aim to drink 2-3 litres of bottled or filtered water. Tap water is not as good as it contains many chemicals and toxins. The aim is to rid the body of harmful toxins, speeding up your body’s metabolism and fat burning capability. Green tea is also excellent for fat burning.

Exercise Ultimately we need to burn off more calories that are being consumed through food for weight loss to occur. You should be looking to exercise 3-5 times a week of 30-60mins in duration. The most effective forms of exercise are high intensity circuit training (short bursts of 30secs - squats, burpees, press ups, lunges, skipping, pull ups, plank or sets of sprints - running, swimming, rowing etc) and weight training, working big muscle groups - squats, deadlifts, bench press, bent over row, overhead press. Long, boring, steady cardio is less effective.

Supplements Sadly unless you eat all organic foods, the quality of food these days is not the same as 100 years ago. Fertilisers, chemicals, pesticides are used on supermarket foods to make them last longer and destroy a lot of the nutrients. The quality of soils that foods are grown in is lacking quality. The more nutrients your body absorbs, the quicker you will drop unwanted body fat. Popular daily supplements to help a prolonged fat loss, include a good organic multi vitamin, omega-3 and protein powder. Favourite music to play?

Mitchell First holiday memory?

Favourite club in Ibiza?

A ten-day trip to Tenerife in 1985 changed my working life to be honest. It was followed by a residency at Europe’s biggest nightclub, BCM, in Majorca hotspot Magaluf and my family and I have now made our home there.

There are two that I love in Ibiza. The first is Pacha, which was rated third in DJ Magazine’s 2012 poll of the world’s 100 best nightclubs. Its energetic ambience is definitely a reason to party there. Space is also a favourite of mine for the monster it is... or was. On the outskirts of Ibiza Town, it was awarded "Best Global Club" at the International Dance Music Awards in 2005, 2006, 2012, and again in 2013.

Favourite city? Well it would have to be Tokyo. I played there in 1995 at Velfarre club, one of the world’s most famous and expensive clubs ever. It was one of my favourite gigs and it’s about time I went back there.

Favourite club in Magaluf? Well one of the newest and coolest clubs in Mallorca is The Project, Magaluf. It only plays one type of music and that music is house - which I love. I set it up myself in the party resort and it’s great although a part of me still loves BCM as it was after my trial here that I was offered a residency after just three days and have been there ever since.

Best thing about being a DJ in Magaluf? Magaluf has a spirit that gets under your skin and never lets you go. When you think you are down, along comes a top night and away you go again. It’s all things music related from house to R&B - there’s something for everyone.

I play a range of music but my favourite is good house music that has vocals mixed in. Previously I used specialist vocalists to sing previous hits but for ‘Every time I See the Girl,’ I featured my own voice for the first time. I particularly like that funky grove house sound as I’m good at it and I also listen to the soul classics too.

What’s your holiday nightmare?

Magaluf has It would be anywhere where I a spirit that was stuck with people who just want to try anything; those gets under didn’t who aren’t willing to explore new your skin avenues and experience new walks of life would be awful. and never lets you go Your holiday paradise? I’ve been to the Maldives and loved it but anywhere is good by me - it’s all good. I’ve had the opportunity to travel all over the world and the Maldives was great. It was luxurious with its stunning white-sand beaches and an amazing underwater world that’s just ready to explore.

What are you looking forward to in Magaluf 2015? Every year, it’s amazing to see the return of good people that like good house music. Seeing the way that the vibes of the music grab new people by the neck and change their whole perception of it is great and when you see the smile that takes over their face, it’s priceless. ISSUE 6

HISTORY, CULTURE AND COMMERCE FOUND ON NEW LJLA CITY ROUTES New routes from Liverpool John Lennon Airport are opening up different destinations to the curious traveller. Coming on stream this Spring are flights to Riga in Latvia, Bacau in Romania and also a service to Prague, and the airport has welcomed a total of nine new routes in four months. Prague is, perhaps, less of a surprise destination these days, as its beauty and history began to attract thousands of travellers once trips to Eastern Europe became easier from the 1990s onwards.

The National Museum at one end of Wenceslas Square remains a dominant and imposing landmark. At the other end of the cultural scale, Prague can also lay claim to being the good beer capital of the world. Czech

Riga shared a recent honour with Liverpool by being named European Capital of Culture in 2014, and is increasing in popularity with British visitors keen to avoid the well-trodden paths of other more traditional city-break destinations.

“It boasts some of the finest historical architecture in Europe dating back a thousand years”

It’s one of the finest historical cities in Europe with architecture dating back to the turn of the previous millennium. Its medieval heart escaped serious damage in the Second World War so remains a jaw-dropping attraction for visitors.

beer has been brewed for centuries, is of extremely high quality, and is the fuel that drives many social gatherings. Learning the phrase `pivo prosim’, or `beer please’ is likely to come in useful.

Riga, a Latvian port city, has one of the highest concentrations of art nouveau buildings in the world, and the cobbled streets of the Old Town are an obvious tourist magnet. Beneficial exchange rates also made Riga one of the cheapest places to visit over recent years which, added to its other attractions, helped seal the deal for many people. While there, check out the sheer scale of the city’s Central Market, housed in a collection of hangars. It’s a vast collection of stalls to test the stamina of the most ardent

bargain hunter. The opening of a new route to Bacau on the Eastern edge of Romania is likely to be of interest to the region’s business travelers looking to make further inroads into the country. Bacau, in the Moldavia region, is home to large, modern exhibition and conference centre which has already hosted a major health and wellbeing trade show, and has a forthcoming 2D Concept Fashion International Trade Fair being held in April. If business visitors get some down time from their trading activities, they should take a look at the St Nicholas Church and Cultural Centre, and the marvelous icon art contained within. Other fine examples, such as the Romanian Orthodox Church in Onesti, Bacau County, are well worth a look. Fly to Prague with Czech Airlines Fly to Riga with Wizz Air Fly to Bacau with Blue Air

WHAT'S THAT IN THE AIR? Spring, obviously, and time for greeting the brighter days and improving weather. And there’s nothing like getting outdoors, feeling the sun on your face and breathing some crisp, clean air to help you forget the dark and cold of winter. Here’s our guide to some of the best locations for a walking break - whether you’re up for a challenge, or just looking to take time to smell the flowers along the way.

Kerry, Ireland We’ll kick off with one for the more dedicated hiker, and that’s the Kerry Way. At 133 miles it’s not for the faint-hearted, but it will take you through some of the most dramatic scenery Ireland has to offer. It’s the longest of the Irish Waymarked Trails and circumnavigates the Iveragh Peninsula which extends out into the Atlantic ocean. Beginning and ending in Killarney, the trail typically takes around nine days to complete and presents some challenging walking conditions along certain stretches, particularly the descent into Bridia Valley. The rugged conditions, however, are offset by the majesty of the McGillicuddy Reeks containing Ireland’s two highest peaks, the Torc waterfall passed early on the trail, and also the opportunity to visit a 4,000 year old stone circle just outside the popular tourist town of Kenmare. Fly to Cork with Ryanair

Amalfi Coast, Italy This is a truly incredible stretch of coastline that mixes heartstopping views with picturesque villages and, of course, some truly excellent cuisine. Make the journey between Amalfi and Sorrento on foot and you won’t regret not using the services of a hire car company.

36

Voyage

You’ll need the walk to burn off some of the calories taken in along the way at restaurants like La Strada in Praiano which has the most glorious waterside location and a fine selection of seafood dishes. Tackle the Path of the Gods for some heavenly vistas, but walk the route from Agerola to Nocelle as it slopes downhill. Fly to Naples with easyJet

Hallstatt, Austria The World Heritage Village of Hallstatt is a beautiful base from which to see some spectacular Alpine scenery, catch a fabulous sunrise or walk along a gorgeous lakeside. There are several themed walking trails available so you can pick and choose the ones that suit your level of fitness. The historical Brine-Pipeline route begins at Lake Hallstatt, follows the river Traun and ends up at Lake Traunsee. It runs along the world's oldest pipeline, established in 1607 to enable brine to flow and as the path slopes slightly down, it’s an easy route to walk. But the real eye-opener is the hike from Gjaidalm to the Simony Hut almost 7,000 feet above sea-level. Stay in the lodge to catch the first rays of the sun the next day. Fly to Salzburg with easyJet

Northern Portugal Avoid the heat of the summer months in Portugal by striking out in Spring and heading for the less travelled routes in the north of the country, using Porto as your point of entry. It’s a fairly rugged landscape epitomized by the Peneda and Soajo Mountain Traverse which offers walkers a genuine insight into life away from the tourist hot spots. The 77km route is best tackled over several days which will give you the chance to fully appreciate the diversity of the flora and fauna with the country’s only National Park. This is an area where the local population have carried our traditional methods of earning a living for centuries, and remote villages and agricultural buildings found along the trail bear witness to their demanding existence. Fly to Porto with Ryanair

Isle of Man Few walks offer the opportunity to see the whole place, but the Isle of Man’s coastal footpath, the Raad ny Foillan does just that. All 100 miles of it takes you right around the island’s coastline, and you can also enjoy many of the unique features by participating in the Isle of Man Walking Festival which this year takes place between May 10-15. Experienced guides lead walks during the festival, so you can enjoy the benefit of solid local knowledge to back up the experience of seeing so much glorious landscape and sea views. Fly to Isle of Man with easyJet and flybe

Malaga Walking and hiking are probably not the first things you think of when choosing Malaga as a destination. But this southern Spain city is close to some excellent walking country less than an hour away. East of Malaga lie the Sierras of Tejeda and Almijara national parks, and access to a whole host of walks of varying degrees of difficulty, rising to a maximum height of just over 2,000 metres. As you move away from the coastline, the rural economy takes over and there’s the chance to visit a host of unspoilt villages along the way. The climate is usually favourable, but Spring avoids the punishing temperatures of Summer for this kind of activity. Fly to Malaga with easyJet and Ryanair

Paris is always good for style and you’ll find plenty of it at the recently-opened Maison Souquet which harks back to the Belle Epoque era and is part of the Luxury Small Hotels of the World group.

Whatever your travel-related conundrum, talk to us at Voyage magazine and let us help you on your way...

It has a private spa and pool, only available to guests upon request, and great care has been taken to return this Parisian townhouse to the decadent glamour it would have displayed at the turn of the 20th Century.

I’m always a little nervous about what to expect before travelling somewhere I haven’t been before. Guide books help, but how can I find out how to stay safe?

The advice can cover everything from what to do if you discover an unexploded shell on a World War Two battlefield and how to avoid fines for the misuse of balconies. Particularly useful are the sections on local laws and customs which may prevent a misunderstanding becoming something worse. My husband loves cars, especially Formula One racing on the television. His birthday is coming up and I’d like to treat him to a trip to a European Grand Prix. What would you suggest? The European leg of the Formula One season kicks off with the Gran Premio de Espana Pirelli at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya. Practice, qualifying and the race itself take place between May 8-10 and tickets are available for all the sessions and at a range of prices depending on how generous you’re feeling!

I would like to see a proper Easter religious festival, but fear Rome might be too packed. Is there anywhere you can suggest? Yes there is. Braga in Portgual, just a short drive from Porto, is an important centre for Holy Week observance. Braga is home to Portugal’s oldest cathedral, built in the 12th Century, and has a religious tradition dating back as far as the third or fourth century. Thousands gather to view numerous processions including the night-time `Ecce Homo’ procession on Maundy Thursday organised by the confraternity of Mercy. Accompanying this procession are the farricocos who roam the city in black, hooded tunics sounding rattles. In the month leading up to Easter the city is decorated and homeowners do likewise for Easter Sunday with flowers.

LOCATIONS, LOCATIONS, LOCATIONS Liverpool has earned an outstanding reputation for its filming opportunities. In recent years such Hollywood blockbusters as Fast and Furious 6, Jack Ryan, Captain America: The First Avenger and Sherlock Holmes have had scenes filmed in and around the city. Last year the city welcomed around 170 separate productions, from feature films to commercials, looking to make the most of its world-class locations. But where in Europe can you stand in the footsteps of some of Tinseltown’s finest? Here, in vivid Technicolour, we present those legendary locations.

2. Paris James Bond fans are in for a treat in the City of Lights. Roger Moore was arching his eyebrows in several locations during his tenure as 007. The most obvious spot is the Eiffel Tower where Bond confronts Grace Jones as May Day, but just 20 miles outside the city is Vaux le Vicomte which doubles as Drax’s Californian home in Moonraker. It also saw screen time in Valmont, The Man in the Iron Mask and Marie Antoinette. Fly to Paris with easyJet

Fans of epic adventure need only visit a single location on the island. The fort was built at Kalkara to protect the approach to the Grand Harbour.

Bond had begun to look very old-fashioned once Jason Bourne popped up, and an early site of his combat skills can be found in Prague’s Kampa Park which is doubling for Zurich in The Bourne Identity. Later in the same film, Bourne takes refuge in a farmhouse and faces off against The Professor - a farmhouse in the village of Suchdol, not far from Prague’s Vaclav Havel airport.

BODRUM Bodrum ticks a lot of boxes as a holiday destination. It’s got historical sightseeing that would be the envy of many countries, there’s a great mix of traditional and modern nightlife, some terrific hotels across the budget spectrum and a Spring climate that allows you to get the best out of all these attractions. Spend a day standing in the footsteps of the ancients, or set sail to reach a deserted cove. Eat the freshest seafood available and dance the night away in a superclub. Follow our guide to what makes Bodrum so special.

HISTORIC BODRUM Bodrum was home to one of the fabled Seven Wonders of the Ancient World the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus - which on its own should be enough to secure its historic status. Only the foundations now remain and a small museum on its site. It was revered on completion and stood for hundreds of years before being destroyed by an earthquake, but it should be on anyone’s list when visiting.

STAYING IN BODRUM There are places that come and go as destinations for the fashionable set and Bodrum is certainly having its moment. This gorgeous waterside location has seen a growth in the number of high end hotels springing up to cater for an increasingly discerning client group. The Mandarin Oriental is one of the relative newcomers, together with the Kempinski and its private beach at Barbaros Bay as a five-star room and suite provider. If you want chic but with a more affordable price tag, then the boutique - and brilliantly named - 4 Reasons at Yalikavak, just a few miles from Bodrum itself might be the perfect option. Quiet, peaceful and relaxing.

48

Voyage

As should the magnificent Bodrum Castle built by the Knights of St John which now houses the Underwater Archaeology Museum where fascinating objects recovered from the deep are exhibited. The wonderfully preserved GrecoRoman amphitheatre on the northern outskirts of Bodrum is a superb example of its kind, and would have seated an audience of some 13,000 in its heyday.

BODRUM SOCIALISING There’s no end of bars and clubs to find yourself in when you want to end a busy day of lazing in the sun or mooching round an historic ruin or two. A fixture of Bodrum nightlife since 1979, Halikarnasas is a must-visit for anyone who likes their clubs big, bold and bright. It boasts an array of

themed shows, great live acts and a superb sound system. It’s a place to party until the early hours. For something with a more traditional slant, try one of the many meyhane restaurants and bars. These are likely to be small, atmospheric, family-run places where locals gather to chat, eat and enjoy some live music.

Many people swear by Antik Akdeniz at Cevat Sakir No 53. It doesn’t have the most sylish location but it does have an excellent mixed grill. For fresh seafood, try Deniz Feneri in the fish market. It couldn’t be closer to the catch of the day, or you can buy your own and they’ll grill it for a small charge.

BODRUM DAYS OUT If you’re taking more than a long weekend’s R&R, then there’s plenty to see and do in the Bodrum hinterland. Follow a centuries old tradition by bathing in the mineral rich pools of Pamukkale where natural hot springs containing calcium emerge, cool and form dramatic limestone travertines. The Antique Pool is littered with the remains of Roman columns.

If the historic sites of Bodrum itself haven’t satisfied your thirst for ancient culture, then you must make time for a visit to Ephesus - a hugely important site in Greek, Roman and early Christian history. The Library of Celsus, the tomb of St John the Apostle and a huge open-air amphitheatre are just three of the many highlights of any trip to this magnificent location, close to presentday Selcuk.

SAILING FROM BODRUM Being so close to the water presents opportunities to get away from it all, or to swap one holiday destination for another. The most popular activity is to catch the ferry to Kos and spend a day on the Greek island. Bear in mind, you will need your passport and there can be queues at passport control. A similar opportunity exists to visit Rhodes in the summer, the journey, at around

two hours, is about twice as long. Of course, you could always use Bodrum as a base and then set off on a charter for a few days, exploring the idyllic coastline. Numerous companies offer yacht charters that will take you and your friends to unspoilt coves and villages that you may not be able to access otherwise.

BODRUM HAMAM One aspect of Turkish culture you must try is that of the Hamam or Turkish bath - a traditional and invigorating scrub that is the perfect pick-me-up after a long flight. Often accompanied by a massage and a spell in a sauna, it will get your skin in tip-top condition for any tanning sessions you might have planned. The oldest Hamam in Bodrum is at Omurcadere Sokak, No.22 and dates back to 1749. It’s a fairly unprepossessing looking establishment from the outside, but don’t let that put you off. If you want a few more fills with your foam than Bodrum Hamami at Cevat Şakir Cad. Fabrika Sok. No: 42 offers a more upmarket service over an hour and a half.

TIME TO REMEMBER May 8th will see the 70th anniversary of VE Day and the cessation of hostilities across Europe. It’s probably the last time many of those involved will be able to mark a major anniversary such is their age, but museums and memorials exist across Europe and are always worth visiting when in their locality.
