Sarah Aljandel 2022 Portfolio BA hons Architecture liverpool school of art and design
My name is Sarah Aljandel, I am an architecture student at Liverpool John Moores University my interest in architecture evokued through traveling. for example, when i went to see the Abu Dhabi Louvre by Jean Nouvel, i felt overwhenlmed by its elegently designed dome. The mashribaya structure floating above the spaces, protects the enviroment from heat, whilst manipulating natural sunlight. my curiousity from this experience has allowed me to profoundly think about the effects of architectural design.

The Hideaway spa This design of a hammam has multiple spaces (wet/dry) for cleaning the body and soul, historically hammams embrace the way of bathing which soon developed into a community ritual. The hammams is a gathering point for socialising and interactions where people can meet and share the relaxing moment to socialise and share news . in the middle east, it is a central place where decisions were made and where you could meet and catch up with friends. My design intends to bring th is piece of the east into the western world. The hammam usually consists of four main spaces; • Warm room to start your journey and get comfortable to the heat. • Hot steamy room to sweat away all body’s impurity. • Resting/relaxation room to have tea and relax. • Optional massage room to relieve you of all remaining stress or discomfort. My concept here was to create a space incorporating sensory design throughout the building. A space where one can relax and de-stress, allowing people to bring out their best self externally and internally whilst creating an interaction point where people can come together to socialise.
My concept is to create a relationship between my buildng and the senses.Sensory design - working with the textures, lighting, smells and sounds to affect the users experience, using sensory architecture within the bathhouse to transform the interactionbetween people and the built environment into something deeper. The bathhouse triggers feeling s such as cosiness, cleanses, comfort etc.Using the room temperatures and the texture\warm colours of the interior provide an extra sense of comfort in the Hammam space. the human body and mind are affected by a circadian rhythm, therefore understanding therole of the lighting of spaces is crucial to maintain the users’ comfort. lighting is controlledtherefore, natural lighting has been made minimal inorder to offer a calming environment. it has been scientifically said that warm lighting tends to make an environment quieter and people more relaxed.
weather or not design project This building design is a lab where eco development experiments take place. within the building there are green rooms with vegitation which is examined and observed under different conditions to see what the outcomes are. these labs provides information on green revolution and how global climate change may affect ecosystems in low nutrients soil. skylight and curtain walls added to the design provide the nutrients to the indoor planting systems whilst providing solar heating and lighting. due to the building being based on the eco, timber material has been used throughout for its carbon capturing features.
The building shape represents the form of a tree, creating a branching out design of the labs.
Merseyside multi sensory impairment school School supporting children with sensory impairment / children who have cognative impairment throughout their education. sensory impairment is a disability which has high educational impact, the aim with this deisgn is to help with educational and emotional aspects of their hearing or visual impairment and express that throughthe design of the building. the building design provides easy circulation and provides colour ahd shape throughout as this is an easy comunication method for someone whohas sensory impairment. the exterior window design provide a 3d shapes and edges, this is the first communication approach for a sensory impaired child. throughout the building, ramps are lifts and appropriate size doors are available for wheel chair users. the spaces and rooms consist of play and activity rooms which will help increase their sytmbolic languagee wgere children can interact and play whilst developing their social and communication skills. other communication focused classrooms allow users to amplify spech by making picture based materials such as symbols, shapes and textured materials. the design expresses different approaches such as pause times, oppertunities and functions which help adapt teaching and the enviroment to maximise the communication for children. the design arrangements express this with open spaces, front deck and roof garden, these oppertunities, functionsand pause times are also demonstrated in the activities tha take place in the classrooms
