Comprehensive Design Project: Bankhall Street Foyer

I chose to design a foyer for the homeless population of Merseyside, which has seen a surge in numbers. The centre re-purposes a grade II listed Victorian warehouse and expands across an old skip-yard and former merchant dock, running parallel to the Liverpool-Leeds canal. The pod design was chosen to allow flexibility for growth, taking into consideration the climate crisis with the use of recycled materials and low carbon products.

Weather or Not

The site for the Weather or Not project was located at Gummer’s How in the Lake District. The site is atop a steep hill, is exposed to the harsh elements and is quite remote. The brief required a place to be designed that addressed the climate crisis and worsening weather events in the region. I interpreted this through the use of an outdoor amphitheatre, events space and log room. Guests can observe the weather during their visit and create a log through the form of writings, drawings and photography, that are stored there and publicly accessible.

Adjacently connected is a bothy - a shelter for respite from the weather and for overnight stay. Equipped with basic amenities, guests are encouraged to leave extra supplies for the next person and share the space overlooking the lake.

Temples of Convenience

Situated off Hamilton Square, Birkenhead, the proposal offers the adaption of an irregularly shaped plot of land, nestled between James Gillespie Graham’s neoclassical town houses and a contemporary residential building. With toilets placed at ground level, the first floor will accommodate a shared multi-use workshop & centre for learning, containing a variety of learning aides (computers, white board, tools etc) with room for future evolution of the space.

Additionally, a multi-use “Makers Stall” is located at ground level as a pop-up shop that aims to help local residents get involved in entrepreneurial ventures.

Urban Design + Photography Studio

Brief:

Master Plan 1:500

Produce an urban design strategy for the fabric district region of the city of Liverpool. Within this urban strategy, design a photography studio that re-purposes an old, disused warehouse.

Elements of the urban design strategy included, elevated urban farms & walkways, a covered shopping arcade and a central canopy/square for people to congregate and events to take place.

A Place for Crafting

Brief:

Design + craft an object at 1:1 scale and then design the place that this object would be manufactured and/or sold.

I chose to create a workshop that produced and sold train sets, located on Lark Lane, Liverpool. The facility included a workshop, shop, cafe, apartment office and warehouse.

Brief: Design, model and film a promenade of multiple spatial experiences.

My archifilm was a spacial sequence that takes you on a journey from the forest, out into a clearing on the edge of a cliff. Following the path through tunnels and arches leads to an outdoor theatre.
