GHENT FASHION SCHOOL

Through the regeneration strategy, the area around Houtdok and Handelsdok will be transformed and become a one-stop centre for Smart Textile. This is based on the Ghent history which is used to be prominent in the textile industry. This scheme enhances the initial proposed of Ghent masterplan in becoming the model city of sustainability not only when it comes to its car-free zone but as well as in education. As the fashion industry closely related to the world’s pollution, awareness and new knowledge relating to fashion sustainability are needed to prevent more problem as the Ghent becomes the smart textile hub in the future. This new expansion of Ghent fashion school will have a new programme that exploring the application of sustainable fashion through innovation, artistic and business practice. It’s a place that not only for learning but as well as connecting with the local community and thus spread awareness on sustainability in fashion. Through its space, function and programme, this building will educate visitors about pros and cons of the fashion industry, showcasing new technology of textile, that is environmentally friendly as well as possible ways to upcycling used textile into something valuable.

GHENT SMART TEXTILE INNOVATION & ENTREPRISE

Through research and findings of Ghent, the proposal of this urban renewal project calls for an innovation and entreprise district at the north of the city centre. Namely `Smart Textile Innovation and Enterprise District’, it is a sustainable modern innovation approach on what is now formerly an industrial district. This new district connects other further districts, making it a go to for its proximity, identity and accessibility to the future. This project will boost Ghent’s identity as a city known for smart textile. This project addressed as realistic and relatable to the locals through the textile industry along with other services sector. A pragmatic approach that is suitable to its context is proposed by cultivating a live, work and leisure lifestyle where everything of daily activities is in the vicinity. This urban architectural approach supports Ghent to be a greener city. Furthermore, the proposition of public realms is enhanced further through characteristic streets. With the integration of mix-used buildings, this ‘Smart Textile Innovation & Enterprise District’ eventually brings in more density, making the old dock and the locality lively again. It is a neighbourhood of sharing knowledge and entrepeneurship through smart textile innovation, with the ambition of bringing back textile as part of the economy generator again.

BALTIC FARM LIVE PROJECT

Baltic Farm is a creative food project located within Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle. It is a community engagement that promoting urban farming and cultural events in one place. It is based on the collaboration between two projects; Urban Farm and The Great George’s Street Project and has a direct connection with the Baltic Triangle Community. This project is a part of transition before being replaced by the Great George Street Development (GGS) where successful elements from this project will be considered to be incorporated into the final development.

Schedule of meetings / project programme A series of four client meetings have been scheduled, and the first step will be for the student group to fully understand the site, the project requirements and project constraints, developing a fully detailed design brief and realistic project budget. The student group will then determine how to best progress the design, programme and procurement strategies for the project over the subsequent client meetings, working towards making a Final Presentation and submitting a Client Report at the final session. If the presentation and report are well received it is hoped that the proposals they make can be taken forward to construction. However, this is out of the scope of this Module and brief. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Monday October 15th, 1pm, Module Introduction with Module Leader, JLADB Client Intro and briefing - Monday October 21st 5.00pm at Farm Urban The Baltic triangle. The Live Project will run in parallel with the series of Management Practice and Law lectures which will provide important supporting information for the project. Communications and output requirements It is currently envisaged that all communications between the client and student group will be coordinated by the option tutor, Jo Hudson, however, this may change as the project develops.

The success of the project will depend upon many variable factors, and the nature, scope and depth of the work will depend upon the decisions of the student group. There are no specific defined outputs for the Final Client Presentation although it is anticipated that the final presentation will consist of a verbal presentation with supporting visual material and the Final Client Report will be a hard copy and of a practical size.

DISCUSSION OTHERS

The Baltic Farm consists of three elements; growing platform, sculptural seating and community canopy. But the one that they seek for our consultation is the community canopy at which will be used as an event space (targeting 12 events per year) as well as for a wedding reception. Apart from that, to gain revenue and to keep the place occupied, they planned of having a cafe as well.

DENSITY, TYPE, DIVERSITY HOUSING

The green belt area is at risk of developing due to the housing issue of the Local Council. The council need to meet up until 500 houses per year in order to meet with the National Planning Policy Framework. Hence, an underdeveloped collection of a light industrial warehouse located at the edge of Hamilton square is seen to have the potential of being part of housing in the new local plan. The proposal is to have a new medium density housing around ventilation stack at Sydney Street and at the same time retaining the stack tower as its part of conservation area and landmark to the Hamilton Square. While regenerating the area through new housing scheme, industrial workshop and cafe will be a part of the scheme as it not only provides employability but also diversifies the area making it a better place to live. With a concept of game name Jenga, This new scheme has a subtraction element where it provides openings within the building to accommodate courtyard for residents. As the housing will wrapping the ventilation which known with its unique brick facade, it will be adapted to the new scheme and at the same time combining with zinc cladding which complements to the surrounding context.

SPECIALIST STUDY: ARNE JACOBSEN & SAS ROYAL HOTEL

Arne Jacobsen is an architect and furniture designer that has been chosen by SAS Airlines to design its first hotel and airline terminal in 1955. A collaboration between Arne Jacobsen and Fritz Hansen Manufacture started in 1934, but he gained his recognition in the 1950s through his successful design of the Ants chair. The concept of designing everything where the ideas come from one and only creator is known as Gesamtkunstwerk can be seen through Arne Jacobsen’s work. This ‘utopian’ ideology towards a total reorganization of the existing world is prominently shown in his SAS House Project. Completed in 1960, SAS House is a combination of luxury hotel and airline terminal that is located in the centre of the Copenhagen, Denmark. Jacobsen did not consider his architecture and interior design separate discipline as they were in fact complementary to each other that respond to the different scales and requirement. His design that is humanistic and pragmatic aesthetic and ability to combine beauty and ability at every level is proved as most of his design is still in production, from the chairs to lighting fixtures to coffee pots and bathroom faucets.

MAKE ELLESMERE PORT GREAT AGAIN

The research into the history of Ellesmere Port, the initiation of the MEGA project allows our group to delve deeper into the root of the issues plaguing the town centre. At a low demand and interest on its function, Ellesmere Port town needs to reinvent itself to attract dwellers, entrepreneurs and investors. We learn about the current social and economic condition through visiting a key person, Mr Hollestelle, and read about the local plans and strategic framework. We do address our insufficient market and land ownership research due to time constraints, and make this project as realistic and exciting as possible. We also used books to help in the design. Addressing the lack of funds, we propose a pragmatic and contextual approach that enhances the appeal of public realms, ie through three interlinked but discrepant squares - for play, for gathering, and for trading. We also suggest the introduction of zoning and change of functions for certain failing buildings. These schemes ultimately infer the densification of the town centre and the increasing mix-use. We try to rebrand the town as modern, youthful and resilient as well as incorporate a slow change of location of high street from Whitby Road to Wellington Road.
