‘About me’ I am an Architectural Designer graduating with a Masters degree in Architecture and Urban Design. I have a huge passion for the built environment, particularly on how architecture and the natural world can work harmoniously together. Having gained some experience in practice during my placement year, I am very much looking forward to investing all that I have learnt in a practise where I can grow as a professional. Just as architecture is a visual art, I hope my work will speak for itself to demonstrate my skill and administration.

The best time to plant a tree? Twenty years ago. The second best time? Today. - Chinese Proverb

Tissue Culture Research and Production

2020 Portfolio Loucas Anastasiou 1

Introduction Today, the total woodland coverage of Britain is at a mere 13%, the lowest in Europe. For hundreds of years, woodland has been cultivated for timber resources that have fuelled industries up and down the country. This has left Britain with an ecological disconnect and only a handful of ancient woodland remaining. There is an urgent need for the restoration of the lost biodiversity. This thesis study explores a new and developing technology that has the ability to help plant native tree species around Britain, at a mass rate. Tissue Culture essentially takes very small pieces of tissue from tree cuttings. This enables the ability to multiply one tree into hundreds and maybe even thousands through jars of a growth hormone liquid. This process requires controlled laboratory environments from which, this project is designed around. As architects, we have the skill and ability to design a better world for people. But how far can we go? The built environment that we call ‘architecture’ has decimated large chunks of our natural world, particularly in Britain. As designers, we need to work with nature rather than work against it. This is the ultimate aim for the Tissue Culture Research and Production project. To design a building with the purpose of restoring Britain’s lost biodiversity, that also has the ability to eventually degrade back into the soil from which it came from. Thus, replicating what we call the circle of life.

This process requires controlled laboratory environments from which, this project is designed around.

MANCHESTER ST HELENS LIVERPOOL WARRINGTON

The thesis topic of Tissue culture stems from the Group Urban Design project. The group project introduces a University Quadrant (University of Chester) to a deprived area of Chester, England. The Tissue Culture Research and Production facilities will be located on an existing Golf Course over the River Dee, and will be accessible via a pedestrian footbridge. The site offers the potential for public, professionals and university students to step into a forest landscape within an urban setting. Reconnecting the city with the natural world.

A SOLAR ENERGY PRODUCTION The zinc roof panels of the Research and Production building will support 72 high efficiency 300W monocrystalline solar panels, angled at 30 degrees. The building will have the ability to switch power systems from the grid, to an on site solar charge controller. The solar energy produced will eventually subside the energy usage from the grid over time. One 300 Watt panel will produce 240 volts, which equals 1.25 Amps. On average, one solar panel in a full days sunshine will produce roughly one hour of power.
