“Only a degree or so warmer than today could melt Greenland ice and drown coastal cities around the globe, cities that are home to millions of people” Mark Lynas ‘Six Degrees’

Project title

Cittadella

Cittadella Cittadella represents an extreme shift in our need for habitation under the dures of an extreme climate, through the exploration of an inhabitabke vertical superstructure, forming a protective membrane around the perimeter of the city. Inspired by avant-garde architectural movements VIIIg such as Archigram and The Situationist International, Cittadella challenges preconceptions of future societies within extreme environmental conditions.

Feature Project

This project seeks to re-instate the meteorological observatory onto the Scottish mountain of Ben Nevis. The facility will become the point in Europe to study and log data on so called ‘European Windstorms’. The element of the wall drives the project conceptually, acting as a sheltering element for the scientists and the climbers who climb the mountain.

Reflections The building I have designed archives all documentation relevant to the Hillsborough disaster that occurred in 1989; a subject very close to the hearts of the people of Liverpool. It represents the unity of the city of Liverpool, and the families of those affected by the disaster; it embodies the relentless determination of the underdog. The building consists of twentythree monolithic walls that stretch 96 metres from the first wall to the last along Liverpool’s northern docks. Each wall represents every year that passed before the truth about the disaster was revealed. 96 people died in the disaster on 15th April 1989. Above ground is a reflective journey that the public are invited to take, through the monoliths, each one an obstacle, posing a constant challenge until the emergence through the last monolith. Below ground is a more private place, where people access the archives. Archives are contained within 5 core walls and between are the spaces in which documents can be read. The truth is out, but the fight for justice continues.

“Access to communication in the widest sense is access to knowledge, and that is vitally important for us … We do not need pity, nor do we need to be reminded that we are vulnerable. We must be treated as equals, and communication is the way we can bring this about.” Louis Braille, 1841

Cinematography is about framing and the development of the moving image, but what happens when the oldest camera known to man, the use of sight, is taken away and deteriorates. Architecture can offer much more than a visual aspect. ‘Architecture of senses’ is a quote from the brief that was initially set, that I decided to explore, and develop a scheme that explores senses other than sight. The Sense of touch smell taste and sound, and to determine a function to each sense, in order for people to readapt to their environment without the use of sight, to learn or enrich skills needed to live a fulfilled life and to socialize with other people who are in the same situation. My initial idea developed from analysing words associated with my chosen subject, I then prepared them in Braille format, in order to develop this pattern and a framework to insert the senses into, across the site.

BlindSpot

Blindspot is a centre where people who are blind or partially sighted can reconnect to their senses and socialise with others others who are in a similar situation, with personalised rooms that control the amount of light that is allowed into the room, like an aperture on a camera

“We have technology, finally, that for the first time in human history allows people to really maintain rich connections with much larger numbers of people - Pierre Omidyar, chair of Ebay

Virtual Retreat

Joshua Price

text

The all-new proposal of a virtual archive is the antidote to the drama of everyday life. The idea allows users, near and far, to deposit and create their very own digital pieces of family history. Information from past generations, where typically would be lost, can now be treasured by the current generation and all the generations to come.

“The health of the eye seems to demand a horizon. We are never tired as long as we can see far enough.” Ralph Waldo Emerson NEW HORIZONS Art. Sculpture. Landscape.

Information:

NEW HORIZONS

Inspired by the Corbusian promenade, ‘Edge of a City’ by Steven Holl and the Parrish Art Museum, this proposal attempts to renew the complexity of a diluted Pier Head. In turn, create a journey of self discovery, with the power of the natural horizon, surrounding landscape and the creative element through sculpture.

The central atrium exposes the various floor levels and creates a harmonious gathering point. VIIIg

From reading George Orwell’s 1984 and William Gibson’s Neuromancer, parallels have been drawn between todays society and what these key authors have predicted, it has become apparent that the issues presented are very much still potent and relevant. In this way the rehabilitation of Scotland Road will trigger the rehabilitation of the post digital age, creating a prototype for a for a thriving community that reconnects our relationship with our environment and consequently replaces the disconnection with the mind & body to formulate a public, private dialogue. kayleighcreighton@live.co.uk

Space and light and order. Those are the things that men need just as much as they need bread or a place to sleep. Le Corbusier

Inhabited Courtyard The projects aim is to design and explore social condenser in which life and death is overlap and also to create protecting, palliative and welcoming collision zone for children and people in the final years of life. Furthermore, to create public spaces within area to interact people in the protected way with this community.

The journey through my building is inspired from the seven ages of man poem by William Shakespeare which I show my inspiration by sketching every stages.

The architecture will affects wellbeing of those suffering from Terminal disease and children by positive qualities such as light, space, openness, intimacy, views and connectedness to nature.
