Autonomous Utopia
The control of negative artificial intelligence. The development of artificial intelligence poses unimaginable scenarios for the human race. To prevent a negative super intelligence explosion we need an international oversight for the latest technical inventions. We must develop safety protocols and strategies should Artificial Intelligence were to take change. To ensure our safety towards a super intelligence we must help organisations such as CSER prevent a negative explosion. We must do everything we can to have control over artificial intelligence before it has the chance to control us. A fully facilitated research and testing centre for CSER will increase the chance of having a positive artificial intelligence explosion.

The construction and destruction of the oil industry in and around Scotland has impacted enormously on the day-to- day lives of those who populate it. Once described as the ‘golden ticket’ to the oil world, Scotland has been awash with greedy oil merchants looking to strike oil; whatever the cost. The negative chain reaction of this is more and more ships trailing across Scottish waters, destroying everything in its path. As a result of this, the constant transportation of oil in and out of Scotland is ripping apart the oceans they cross, in particular, the Firth of Clyde. Home to thousands of marine wildlife - some of which even hold endangered species titles. If the Clyde wants to remain a key part of Scotland - for the right reasons - then steps have to be put into place immediately in order to do so.

Nimbus
A cloud physics centre for the research, study and appreciation of clouds; situated within the clouds on Ben Nevis. The centre provides a series of spaces for visitors to obtain information and education on the science of clouds, as well as connecting with the clouds themselves. The building has been designed to embrace the extreme weather conditions, with the inhabited wall shielding the building and the curvature of the pods allowing the wind and snow to flow over, creating a space for people to experience the clouds from above.

Exploring the unspoken promise, focusing on the nature genre of film through a cinematic architectural approach. An architecture that can suggest and sustain a specific mental state of its audience through the provision of visual information, in this case the research of nature and its evolution. The new plant and nature research facility will offer laboratories, a film archive, cinema and film studio facilities which will be dedicated to the research, monitoring and preservation of butterflies and native species and to live talks and discussions to interact with the public. It will occupy an unused plot of land, bound on the North and East edges by the Liverpool Leeds Canal and Liverpool Northern rail line respectively. The proposal for this site will act as a catalyst to stimulate an awareness of the research and filming process that is required for the capture of legitimate nature footage.

Rediscovering the Obscura
Stanley Dock is an area with outstanding period architecture, but it is also an area that was at the forefront of the industrial decline in Liverpool. Both these aspects can be celebrated, by creating an epicentre for North Liverpool’s Redevelopment with prospect for the residents of North Liverpool to be actively involved in the process. The space created, is a multi-purpose centre, allowing for prospective developments to be exhibited, a publicly accessible transparent consultation process and the opportunity to observe the spectacular views of the city, Stanley Dock World Heritage Site & North Liverpool.

By 2050 it is expected that the Earth’s population will reach 9 billion. With more mouths to feed, the pressure on agriculture will significantly increase. Current projections suggest that an additional 120 million ha of prime farming land – an area twice the size of France will be needed to support current growth by 2030. There has never been a greater need for improved agricultural technologies; Crop yields need to double, using the same amount of land, whilst at the same time adapting to changing climatic conditions. The solution – Genetically Modified Crops.

Embarking towards defining a new edge it is sometimes required to pierce through boundaries. My project seizes the opportunity to puncture the advancing waters’ edge while paving a way for further advancement to reclaim land. I am confident in my ability to demonstrate my knowledge & skills as part of a team or independently in an effort to produce work which sets me aside from others. I believe in a principle - Architecture should be permanent or demountable either to make a bold statement or to lightly tread on the landscape as not to damage it.

Ephemeral Tales
Through the power of play, driven with storytelling and drama, the aim is to provoke children to open up their minds to worlds of imagination. The form drives the children in manners that betters their communication, physical and team-working skills. Working with an aspect of discovery to heighten the sense of play, and relating to a theme of transient states, through the wind, playscapes form organically, creating ever changing atmospheres. Sand is a magical material of beautiful contradictions. It is simple and complex. It is peaceful and violent. It is always the same, never the same, endlessly fascinating.

Serendimonium Upon The Mersey
In the city exists a transformative condition. Taking inspiration from the work of Situationists and Eisenmann, certain formations of spaces are synthesised out of existing forms and artificial excavations, to create areas of rejuvenated exploration A pandemonium of serendipity and events within the urban landscape.,These are interventions within the city, which remain ambiguous to the surroundings. Although contrary, they interact with surroundings, to set conditions for nonpredetermined actions to occur. A key to this is the relationship between the emptiness of the future, emptiness of the present and the emptiness of the past. A layering of events creates a matrix of opportunities.

The location for the building is by the river on the West Waterloo Dock. The relationship from the building and the river is a prominent aspect of the design. Not everything in the building has to be internal. That which is internal becomes external yet what is external can become internal. The spaces can both expose and control activity. Internal spaces are flexible enough to be both large and small to adapt to different conditions of use and application, and the manipulation of light can generate lightness and darkness in areas to suit their purpose. The aspect of the building would relate to the significant part of the building that would relate back to the nature of the building and its purpose.

The concept for this project began with a vigorous investigative mapping exercise in which I uncovered many underlying aspects of the docks which I had previously failed to identify. During the process of investigation into potential sites along the River Mersey I carried out a site analysis at various points of the docks however it was Stanley Dock which gathered my interest. As I further examined this dock I discovered that it was previously known as a heritage market, therefore from that point I decided that I would reinstate that in my project.

The intention of the programme of this hotel is to resonate with my studies of a neo-futuristic setup and philosophy. The hotel is comprised of distinct elements including a main structural core of circulation from which flexible 7x7 units formulate and extrude from the main element. These permutations give the building a dynamic facade where light is able to penetrate through and creating many balconies of space. The user can interact with the city on many levels. These units are entirely flexible in plan allowing for a very unique high end hotel experience.

Liverpool is created by a numerous amount of history that features a vast amount of historic detail. One of its most historic landmarks is the docks that connects the city to the water. By researching into the docks history and the heritage sites, the Stanley Dock cries out for a new lease of life. This enticed me to locate my project here. The idea of ‘injecting new life into the old’ inspires me to restore and cherish a the old graded building and inject a new modern design.

Restitution of Essentia
Imagination, wonder and curiosity create the essence to life. Merging the boundaries between the phenomenal and the unexpected, many social issues can be alleviated. Restoring the humanity and camaraderie to those afflicted, the environmental exploration recollects stories to harmonise the inhabitant. The architecture is focused to help children that have fallen victim to this inhumane scene through providing a safe and secure environment. Taking inspiration from children’s tales and the “tree-house”, the architecture couples a supportive safe environment. Alongside exciting explorative qualities rekindling a child’s intrigue and adventurousness.

Idea
The creation of a reconciliation point, acting as an equilibrium between the capitalist greed of society and those first entrusted to inhabit the earth. The commanding structure reconstitutes the threshold, redefining the edge, which will inevitably lead to a more democratic, compassionate, balanced society. One which will use the symposium to learn from the throwaway culture of the past, leading to a brighter collective future.

Reshaping the surface is giving something from the past a new image for the future. This happens in fashion every day; where fashion and clothing can change the way people look by covering parts of their body. I have taken this principle and applied it to the tobacco warehouse at the Stanley Dock in Liverpool. Through manipulation I have designed and developed a fashion school that is attached to the existing building in order to create a community in an area that needs reviving. The process of manipulation and developing existing surfaces to withstand the future is an interesting concept that inspired my project.

The aim of this project is to create a place where times collide. Where the ancient history of rock meets the cycles of light and the moment of event. To allow visitors the chance to experience the contrast between the scales of time through materiality and light. To provide a deeper connection to the landscape of time in the hope that visitors will gain a deeper understanding of their place within it. To create a hotel that is both enjoyable and thought provoking, both commanding and hidden, so that it has to be explored to be truly understood.

Liverpool has a unique identity, a city on the edge, consequently it has always had a ‘rhythm of it’s own’, a city that has differed to the national norms. This has lead me to create a street space in the space known as ‘Pneumonia Alley’ in the Stanley dock area of Liverpool. By creating a space for the radical thinkers of Liverpool and other members of the local community it will encourage interaction and convocations to take place. Helping to improve Liverpool as a city letting it grow around it’s inhabitants.

In response to the gluttonous and enclosed nature of the modern hotel, I propose an alternative - a retreat in the mountains of Snowdonia. Here the focus is not the destination, but the journey, both mentally and physically. This is a focus expressed in the language of the architecture. The guests will be immersed in the natural landscape. In the vast, majestic mountains, the primal connection with nature and the sense of place found within it can be found. A journey through architecture will take you to the edge, of society, of discovery.
