Transient Paroxysm is a Russo creative hybrid inspired by the designer Ulyana Sergeenko who’s entered the Haute couture fashion scene as a designer in 2011. It reflects upon the collaboration that can be found between fashion and performance and how primary source entertainment and craftsmanship has slowly been replaced by 21st century technologies.

EDGE – BRUTALITY – SHIFT. In this project I have tried to explore the continuous borderline edge condition that is a result of two mediums interacting with each other. It is through this very simple action that anything is created and that everything develops.

In the past, Port Penrhyn was a thriving port using the slate exported from Penrhyn Quarry to bring business through the site. The decline of Penrhyn Quarry lead to the port becoming severely under-used. This project is not only about bringing the physical site back to the roots it came from but also about letting the nearby students and community learn how to get work in the maritime industry.

Aqua Culture was influenced by the dramatic changing landscape that surrounds Port Penrhyn, the sea being at the heart of it. The marine biology in the area is highly diversified, with the only way to experience it through scuba diving. This led to the programme of my building being a marine biology research centre combined with a scuba diving centre. The concept of my building is created from the drastically changing tides, after studying them I plotted the 10th of each month on a graph, the formation I created became my plans and allowed me to organise spaces.

Environmental problems are not new, for centuries, societies have suffered the loss of natural habitats, have forced problems of conflicting land uses, have struggled to find the appropriate regulatory response to such problems and have done so against a background of shifting political ideas and alliances. My ambition for this project was to develop an Environmental Courthouse that would provide Bangor City an opportunity to become the anchoring City for environmental Issues and resolution. The Courthouse would provide an experience, reminding people of the importance of creating a sustainable environment for future economic developments.

To build a new community that facilitates the reintegration of the invisible back into society through a variety of ways, mainly based around self help schemes to raise the confidence of a homeless person. To bring in professionals to train up the homeless within the centre in various workshops to give basic skills they can use in the future, this will simultaneously benefit the centre and the professionals self improvement. To design the technology of the plan in such a way that allows for continuous growth and evolution.

My intention is to darn the tear in the urban fabric with a building that structurally and functionally mimics the raw material the company utilises in its fashion range. The building weaves together the disciplines within the company, public and private space and thermal mass with brise soleil. The waffle form defines the building and makes it identifiable as the Allsaints headquarters while its innovation sits well with the company ethos.

The idea of the project was about bringing all the arts together that was student run from Liverpool. The pier represents the journey from Liverpool to New York with the temporary pavilions representing the waves of the Atlantic. The theme of the design links in to ships and folding where each strip of the pavilions represents the clothing and the interior being the body. I was inspired by ‘function follows form.’ I didn’t add or remove anything from the forms as I wanted to keep the shape pure.

Sedimentology Outpost for Bangor School of Ocean Sciences. The project is created around two conditions, land and sea, viewing them not as two differentiating entities, but as two components inherently interwoven within a finely balanced planetary system. The program for design is to support the initial concept, by creating a building that facilitates the study of both land and sea sciences, focusing on a specialism within Bangor University’s School of Ocean Sciences faculty: Sedimentology. The site of the building became both its physical and metaphysical foundation, with inter-connective external and internal spaces for both public and private users.

The ability for the eye to advance is a product of the boundary’s openness, its ability to communicate a sense of transparency. Transparency can be used as a metaphor for layered space. By understanding of how a building’s formal structure can demarcate spaces. A design for a fashion hybrid for young fashion graduated and media student. I will be looking at creating a design where the phenomenal transparency will represent the characteristics of McQueen’s work fill the spaces, the activities that occur within them, and the people that occupy them. Using the modern display window and its connection to the street, the project is intended to explore the link between public and private. The use of glass allows for interpenetration and actual transparency, however this does not mean there is clear spatial connection and understanding or an implied transparency.

The Fashion Of Nudity: Sanctuary For The Fundamental. A protective island sanctuary, fostering and promoting fashions and art forms that have germinated from the innate, base fashion of our bare form. A triangulated, elevated compound which embraces only those who are willing to experience its internal workings. From the outside, only glimpses are given through the rugged metallic cladding - to the world of creativity that awaits within. A safe house for still life drawing, a shelter for nude artistic photography, a refuge for avant-garde fashion design...

Transformation and Innovation ‘A Creative Hub within the Baltic Triangle’, a teaching and research centre working towards the future of innovative and sustainable fashion through the use of High Tech Technologies. Standing as a precedent in the area, to help the surrounding community develop their skills in various different areas and give them an environment which will enrich them with the possibilities of the future.

THE FIFTH DIMENSION - THE FUTURE OF FASHION. The building must fit into the social and environmental context, just as the Fifth Dimension does. Taking this idea for future possibilities, I am going to create a reality lab set up and funded by the Issey Miyake label, a place where all designers can collaborate and create. Research into future fashion - we now print in 5D? It will house solo artists and design companies to research and fabricate new fashion and technologies. Access to the public allows interaction through exhibition, social and retail spaces.

Project relationships between Fashion and Architecture. Looking at the Industrial Revolution of the 18th century in the North West the economy and growth increased in and around Manchester. Focusing on the cotton mills and how they were constructed I propose to create a place where people can come together and unite. The location for this is in the heart of Northern Quarter which is a unique place for designers, situated on top of Hilton Street, the site is a car park alongside the Rochdale Canal which connects between Liverpool and Leeds canal.

As sea levels rise we must protect the animals, birds and ecosystems that exist on our coasts. At risk of destruction and coastal squeeze, mudflat and saltmarsh habitats, home to thousands of varieties of plants and small animals, are vital to the survival of hundreds of species of migratory wetland birds, some of which are highly endangered. To protect we must discover through researching these plants, these animals and these birds so that we can know the point to which they can survive and thrive. It is then that we can sustain and create new habitats, ensuring continued survival of our precious birds and supporting wildlife.

Reclaiming the edge is a proposal with an ambition to re-instate the Liverpool waterfront of its lost aura through tangible means. With deliberate and careful reasoning, I propose an ambitious but sustainable industrial takeover of the location through urban farming. The project focuses on an instance where two architectural conditions intervene each other; namely The Wall and The Core. The former is proposed as a concept while the latter encompasses the Comprehensive Design Project. The two conditions combine to complete the narrative and present a functioning alternative to the city and her inhabitants.

‘Bodies in Motion’ was designed due to lack of dance studio space in North Wales and to hold regional qualifiers for the National Eisteddfod of Wales. Through research into motion-grams and movement studies and the connection to the dancers vertebrae the design form and layout was created. Situated at the base of Penrhyn quarry, ‘Bodies in motion’ has been designed to relate and to interact with its surroundings.

Microcosm - Nature and the Cosmos. The programme is an amalgamation of the two age old sciences of astronomy and botany. The site presents unique qualities for the benefit of both fields; its epitome of plant life, foundation for Charles Darwin’s studies of evolution, and exclusive dark sky quality granting unrivalled inquisition of the cosmos. It presents a space that can be inhabited by individuals from both fields to undertake research in a manner that is ‘back to its roots’. A manipulated sequence of space, light and experience, consciousness is inherent to the flow of the adjacent stream and undulating mountain terrain.

Upcycling in Ropewalks: My project is about fashion, upcycling and recycling. I have designed a fashion house which will hopefully make Wolstenholme Square, the project site, a cultural destination for film, art and fashion enthusiasts in ‘Ropewalks’. The fashion house will only be for upcycling fashion designers who re-use fabric or use alternative materials to make their work. With the theme upcycling I saw it as imperative that I could combine architecture and upcycling together into my design. The fashion house is made entirely of disused shipping containers.

gateway: a cultural coliseum an urban theatre, descending into a tunnel cycleway, the nomads, commuters, and creatives are ensnared by the surface extending into the street, merging and separating of the physical domains of cyclists, skateboarders and pedestrians. the faceted concrete roof is a soundscape of space time and surface texture, breaking away to reveal the institute for urban cinema. a tectonic interior, with an imprint of the historic tunnels, and dictated by the process of making an urban film, a cultural infusion of a skateboarding undercroft, cinema, changing facilities, film-making, and exhibition spaces for photography, dance and art.

A creative exploration of a broad project title, “pattern”; relating the effects of built form on the expectation of growth to needs of the client, designing for the future. Designing through conceptual explorations of an individual’s perception of a space; routes, nodes and edges, the progression takes an abstract form to create points of positivity and negativity. Generally, to design by taking abstract forms and designing a functional space is one method of progression through a given project, ensuring that the built form fits the surrounding urban environment, utilising the lost wedges of the city.

[ A C I D O P H I L I C INTERVENTION] One of the most serious issues caused by the mining of metals and coals is the acidification and metal contamination of streams and groundwater. This is known as Acid Mine Pollution. My architecture aims to address this global issue through analysing microbial life found naturally living at the old copper mine Parys Mountain, and their potential means towards remediating acid polluted landscapes.

Contaminated Seas is an architectural project that studies radioactive contamination in the Irish Sea- ‘the most radioactively contaminated sea in the world’ (Greenpeace). An architectural approach that consists of two fragments, part I is a number of ‘Sea Pavilions’ that conduct initial study of locations of environmental concern within the Irish Sea. Part II is the design of an Ocean Research Facility that conducts further research and education on the effects that this contamination has on the Irish Sea ecosystem and biodiversity.

Algaculture farms are places where algae is grown on an industrial scale, algae can be used in numerous processes, the most relevant being fuel. This is an algae farm that is specifically designed for research and has the capacity to produce enough fuel to power itself and houses in Bethesda nearby. The dome shaped structures were a concept developed from the natural shape of algae, and the reoccurring geodesic shapes that appear in nature. The pure shapes are filled with photo bioreactors, which are glass tubes designed to maximise the growth of algae within a short yield.

Film is a universally expressive form of language, as a medium, film needs to be considered as a phenomenon similar to that of language. It has no codified grammar; it has no vocabulary and no specific rules of usage, defining it not as a clear language system like written or spoken English; but nevertheless a language which preforms many of the same functions of communication.

The project proposes the establishment of a UK Biobank complex in Liverpool, for sample collection, storage and research. The design creates a better, more enjoyable experience for the volunteers by replacing the usual waiting rooms with exhibition spaces and terraces, and a more creative work environment for the scientists by promoting interaction and communication. The complex provides an urban oasis for local people, allowing access to learning resources, the exhibition space, the cafe and the gardens.

The Air of Freedom: The power of emotion is a force that has a hold over you. This force can become unbalanced, spiralling into a vortex of distorted thoughts and misconceptions. Depression. The pit of the vortex envelops you until light is cast from the shadows – an awakening. Ascend to a place where life is seen from an alternative angle; nurtured and protected in the slate hollow. Vulnerability and helplessness weakens, a stronger being remains – the process of reconnecting. An exploration further and deeper into yourself. A Journey. A Migration. A path to Freedom.

Kari Bradbury

Fashion is forever changing. It is a quick, temporary cycle. Wolstenholme Square becomes the catwalk where the process of fashion should be celebrated. The forest of columns represent the foundations of fashion which never change, it’s the seasons and styles that change amongst it. The internal of the building can be used as a temporary environment in which people inhabit it as they like. They can create the work space of their choice, just like they choose their fashion style.

Quarries are notorious for their propensity to create ‘a scar on the landscape, this scar represents a collision between man and nature. Man not only resides in nature, he also transforms it; organic forms are created in our own pursuit of raw materials and consequently, our presence is dwarfed by the spaces we ourselves have fabricated. But what happens to these unique spaces once they have been excavated and stripped down of all useful materials? Are they left abandoned, to be reclaimed by nature - their rightful owner, or are they restored by man the architect of its creation.

My project is situated in Port Penrhyn, North Wales. The initial idea for the project stemmed from the flooding at the time in large parts of the UK. Looking into detail and how sea levels are set to rise I discovered that the majority of Port Penrhyn would not be there in 2100. The port features some historic buildings on the site and this prompted me to use them and make sure they would be still here in 2100. The changes in climate change and facing up to rising sea levels prompted me to re-house the School of Ocean Science, University of Bangor and this seemed to be a perfect site for research. Incorporating existing buildings and keeping the ports history through the engine sheds was important within the concept and form of my final design.

Today in the `24-hour city’ model, everything is active and in constant flux. People get tired of the pressure and restlessness of daily life; spaces for meditation are places for people to seek a moment of tranquillity, a moment of the transcendental unification of body and mind, and a feeling of returning to the nature. The aim of this project is to create a ‘retreat’, allowing visitors to momentarily escape from stressful city life, everyday conviction in exchange for calmness and tranquillity. The spaces within the building provide a therapeutic experience that engages each of the senses moving through a sequence of meaningful spaces, as it is the case with pilgrimage.
