The Frohlich’s The American-German artist Fanchon Angst, made her home in Liverpool in 1949. Whilst studying at Somervillle College, Oxford, she met Professor Herbert Frohlich at a party. The couple flourished and married soon after. A theoretical physicist and winner of the Max Plank medal, Frohlich had fled Germany in the 1930s and became a world renowned expert on Quantum physics and its application in biology. Together the pair made quite the impact. As artist and scientist, the couple combined their fields of interest with an impressive social life and worldwide network of friends. Since their passing, their works have been donated to a trust. This trust now needs a place which they can call home, not only to store and display the works of the Frohlichs but also to entertain guests in a manner that the couple enjoyed doing regularly during their rather extravagant lifestyles.
Site Conditions The site is the former home of Joseph Williamson. Only the front facade of his home remains, supported by the remnants of the steel-frame belonging to a garage that used to occupy the site. Currently, it is used as the HQ for the Friends of the Williamson Tunnels who give regular tours of the tunnel network.

Williamson Tunnels The site sits above a section of the amazing network of caverns and tunnels created by Joseph Williamson. The vastness of the network and the sequence of ‘tunnel, cavern, then tunnel again’ is something which gave inspiration to my current scheme.

Initial Ideas & Sketches Sketching formed a vital part in the development of this project. Tracing and overlaying drawings allowed the project to develop a certain depth, which could be lacking if purely developed on CAD software, at early stages. By drawing a tartan grid over the site boundaries, I was able to zone out different areas of the project in plan, whilst keeping to a rhythm which was not initially provided by the site.

The 3D printed models were used to create moulds to cast the other materials in but were interesting in their own right. The layers that are created as a by-product, give the model a texture which is cast very clearly when done so in an Alginate mould using plaster, concrete or resin. Plaster of Paris produced some very nice and clean models. The crisp cubes are exactly the idea I was aiming for.

Though concrete is a very tried and tested material, I felt it was a bit too rough and also too dark for this project. A light and reflective material would better bounce the light down into the 2m wide but 8m deep corridors between the pods.
Resin was used more so as an experiment but managed to yield some very interesting objects. The bubbles created from the negative residue moisture of the alginate mould, left an uneven surface which slightly resembled cast glass.
This spotlight idea allows for some solar shading but too much direct sunlight. Also, the corners seem to darken a bit as the light comes in from a central spot.
The saw-tooth roof is a tried and tested method, usually used in large industrial buildings. It allows for even lighting when positioned facing North. This also means, no direct sunlight enters the space.

Research Centre In this project, we were asked to develop a visitor/ research centre, in the small town of Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire. Located in the Calder Valley, it has been found to be prone to flooding, as it sits where many tributaries feed the River Calder, which runs adjacent to the town. We were given a choice of 3 sites; hill site (up in the hills), river site (by the river next to some housing) or canal site (next to the canal by the town centre). I decided to develop the canal site as I believe a research centre would flourish near the community; especially in a small, well-connected town such as Hebden Bridge. The site fell between a old millturned-nursery and some housing. The North edge of the site butts against a retaining wall, supporting a road which ramps up eastwards.

Glulam Manufacturing costs are less than that of concrete or steel structural members. A more ‘natural’ appearance means for a warmer and more inviting atmosphere.
Stone Locally sourced stone reduces impact on the environment and thus the carbon footprint. Would help the building sit within the town as stone is part of the local vernacular.
Larch Cladding Sourced from UK forests, the fairly fast-growing trees can produce a timber stronger, long lasting and with higher flame retardant qualities than some other woods.
Glass Large openings will aid in the attraction of daylight into the building and thus heating the load-bearing stone walls in the rear to release that heat in the evening.

year of Architecture BA(Hons) at Liverpool England. I believe myself to be an individual am but I tend to naturally take control of any the best of my abilities. I am committed to and will channel my energy and mindset into unictaion has always been a keen interest of ngs visually appealing. I am proud to say that having been asked last year to illustrate and
statement, I was told to model the project and the surrounding façades on the street to explore the impact the building would have on the street. In the other project I was told to develop a series of images and video clips for a project developed by HM Government of Gibraltar for external refurbishment works in a large residential area. Having been given the CAD masterplan files, I was tasked to model the affected area in detail and the surounding area in massing form to provide centext all on SketchUp. The video and images were used by the Government in their press release concerning the project and in their election manifesto for the elections in October 2019. Summer Intern - Gibtelecom Gibraltar / June 2018 - August 2018 In this summer internship I took the role of Technician’s Apprentice. I was tasked to install television set-top boxes in various customers’ homes either on my own or with another intern. I also helped qualified technicians on various jobs including the replacement and installation of telecommunication wires in both residential and commercial environments. I learnt here to be flexible and understanding when working with customers and clients but also to be firm when we had more knowledge on the subject at hand.
