‘About the author’ Throughout my life I have lived in Manchester, Leeds and currently Liverpool. My apreciation for these urban cityscapes lies within the observations of others and how the places we live impact the way we live. However I still feel my familys farming roots have also helped embed an apreciation of the symbiotic relationship between nature and the works created by man. Interests: Hobbies and interests include photography and traveling whenever possible, as I am not afraid to push the boundries of my comfort zone in order to learn. I also push myself physicaly and mentlly through playing rugby at a competetive level as I thrive off leading in a team environment.

The main aim of this project was to capture both aspects of a work-shop under one roof; providing a space for creation, education and retail of reclaimed timber products. Taking visitors through the process of restoring wood for use in new prodects as opposed to the negative carbon ipmact of recycling.
Reclaimed timber transported to workshop

Design hub
The first point of contact for visitors to this centre is the design and education hub with frontage upon both Seel and Slater st. Upon arrival and after recieving either a set kit of parts or bringing their own reclaimed wood, visitors will have to oportunity to work with a design expert to help plan their restoration project before moving through the series of workshops along the left hand wing of the building or above an mezanine walkway to the right.

Timber workshops
The hand craft workshop and is the first place visitors would enter on exit of the design hub, this area is overlooked on street level by multiple windows forming part of the seel st facade with triangular skylights above head built into the roof structure. To the rear of the building this workshop continues onto a wood store and more machnery for larger scale restortion projects.

Timber clad courtyard
Due to the 24 hour activity of the Ropewalks district this courtyard at the heart of the building is intended to provide a multi use open air workshop space that can be transformed by night to an exhibition and hostin g space for auctions or hospitality events. To facilitate this furnerture is all portable to adapt to the needs of the space. with easy acces for forklift timber deliveries by the day and padestrian access by night through large sliding doors creating an inside/outside space.

Urban Design Project
Located along the northern boundry of the Knowledge quater in liverpool, the fabrict district was once a bustling retail district centred around Kempston and stafford street. However due to the historic site falling into disrepair this project looks at urban masterplaning and a sceme to redevelop this area for the new community of young adults living in the multiple new acomodation blocks constructed nearby.
I highlighted the site of the old disused TJ hughes building and surrounding carpark, as an area overlooked in the previous masterplan for the area. The site provided a pivital role in providing conection between the fabrict shops on Stafford street and the newly proposed public square in our masterplan for the area. My intention was to create an space that would provide contrast to the open spaces on the other side of the excisting buildings in the form of a prtially walled courtyard as seen in the visualisation to the right.

Light coloured brick walls surrounding the courtyard created from reclaimed brick provide a canvas for grafiti 1 , while new paving choices alternate from light and darker red slabs. Picking up the red brick facades of the surounding buildings 2 Steel trimmings contribute to a modern industrial aesthetic. Creating the illusion of floating bridges over phsychadelic flower beds 3 forming clear pedestrian routes though to the proposed glazed arcade adorned by comunal art workshops. 2020 Portfolio Connor Brogden

The proposition is intended to create a unifcation between a colaborative arts space in the long double height building to left of the site and fresh food stalls/cafes occupying the skeleton of the old TJ hughes building beneath the rooftop hydroponic gardens. These gardens cascade down from the rooftop provideing a comunity space that can be used both for the growth of flowers and vegerables. Whilst extending the green belt of everton park towards the city.
Visualisation from the protected seating at the north of the site looking back towards the old TJ Hughes building.

Another criteria for the project was to create a space that would remain occupied at night, utilising solar powered light features to exhibit the chalk drawings made by day on the wall at night. The glazed arcade also can form a nightime gallery to exhibit the artwork produced by the local artists working in the comunal arts centre.

Materal rendering of this section allows viewers to easily place this section within the wider context of the project, identifying the red brick of the old warehouses. Showing details in design and materiality choices aforementioned. These two sections also provide scale and inform how the public spaces proposed in this project will be occupied and used by the target audience.
These sections show the alaignment between the metal bridges spanning the gardens and the clear openings of the glazed arcade cut through the old warehouse buildings. Creating a clear visual connection and pathway from rest of the project to the to the smaller ‘pocket park’ proposed in my designs.

A Place For Crafting
Located on the corner of Windsor and Gwendoline street in Liverpool this site lies at the heart of a community that embodies the resilient nature of Liverpudlians and all those from other cultures that have been embraced into that community. This Warosko candle workshop provides not only the opportunity to rejuvenate the underused shopping street but also to act as a metaphorical beacon of hope for the area. The function of the building is to provide a workspace for crafting traditional Japanese Warosoko candles using British beeswax as opposed to wax nuts to allow these candles to cross cultures and find use in the two main cathedrals of Liverpool City.

The glazed south facing elements of the building manage to to maximize solar gain from the minimal sunlight reching the building due to Liverpools geographical location. desired to emphasise the atmosphere created from lit candles. However this lack of sunlight is embraced as the building sinks below the ground creating an open air basement desired to emphasise the atmosphere created from the lit candles created in the workshop above. The areas of desirably higher levels of natural sunlight like the workshop and atrium protrude through the flat overhanging roof to capture as much light as possible.

The building reacts in a unique way to its corner site location, the ground floor is pushed back from the boundary of the site at a 90 degree angle. Creating a glazed front that faces directly to the other side of the crossroads in contrast to the shopfronts on the rest of the street that are parallel to the direction of the pathway. Thick cast concrete walls encapsulate this glaze fronted workshop as they surround the chimney and wax basin that act as the heart of the building. While perforated corten steel provides a more permiable barrier allowing light and sound to pass through the futher toward the perimeter of the property you go.

The absence of obvious doors and boundaries at the perimeter of the site visiable in this exploded axonometric means the separation of private on public domain relies upon the contrast and change of atmosphere as you move throughout the building. The lower private living quarters are lit by warm candle light and diffused daylight to create a comforting atmosphere while the ground and first floor are flood with indirect sunlight to allow precise work in an inviting atmosphere.

Structure and materiality
This cross section provides key information into how the load bearing concrete walls work in conjunction with a steel frame in order to withstand the high tensile pressures from spanning large open spaces. Structural bracing is also provided by two cast concrete staircases while a raft foundation acts to dissipate loads directly through the ground. Construction Process Bellow highlights the identified plan for excavation and construction of the building in series.

Rendered elevations show how the chosen material pallet picks up on the industrial red brick of nearby buildings however uses these tones through the alternate material of corten steel. The same principal is applied to the cast concrete walls that have impressions creating the texture of traditional japanese timber construction translated into a different building material.

Model Making
Created at a scale of 1:50 these models helped as a development from sketching concepts before thye were transformed into final plans and computer renders. These allowed me to experiment with materiality and the presence of the building in its context at a 3D level as opposed to on a 2D plane. Material choices like the impression of the timber into in situ concrete as opposed to cladding were made after this stage, highlighting how models can aid in the refinement process.

These models were also taken to a heliodon to analyse how the building interacted with light and cast shadow allowing me to then adjust the building accordingley in response to these observations.

Archifilm
This project provided the opportunity to consider the framing of a cinematic shot when moving through a succession of spaces we had designed. My specific response to create a series of prismatic shaped shelters devoted to fishing connected by bridges in suspense above the water below. The repetition of familiar shapes and incomplete structure and filming techniques embody a theme of loss and connection inspired by conversation with my grandfather who suffered with dementia about memories of fishing.
