The Della Robbia Forest.
The Della Robbia Forest is the physical form of the ideologies discussed in my manifesto that I had wrote earlier this year. The museum is biophilic in design converging the principles of nature centred and orientated design with the tapestries of the artefacts it holds. The museum has its own internal climate and ambience quite different to anything that can be found in the local area of Birkenhead. Each element of its design from its structure to internal materials has been selected to invoke the sense of natural tranquillity that one may find deep in the natural world.
At the heart of the design there is the need for connection, weaving together community, nature and culture. The community exhibition space for people to meet, sharing a taste for the arts and a vision for a sustainable future. Planters line the internal walkways leading visitors through a immersive tour of the Della Robbia and extended collection of potteries, while in the comforting embrace of nature, subconsciously reminding them of our constant connection with the natural world. Natures inviting charms within the museum are not only for us, but through the inclusion of an intensive green roof and climbing planters that adorn the walls they reach out to our smaller companions on this planet. The green roof aims to become a beckon for wildlife, enriching the biodiversity of Birkenhead, reclaiming a part of the urban sprawl for the natural world.
Each part of The Della Robbia Forest has been designed to exude a sense of nature, standing as a precedent of how I believe buildings should be designed. Not only as structures to house us and entertain us but to support the many other lifeforms that play a key role in our existence on this planet.
