COLONNADE VISUALISATION

WATERFRONT ELEVATION The powerhouse occupies an extremley prestigous site on the Liverpool waterfront. Considering the history and connection of Liverpool to the river Mersey the waterfront elevation was an extremley important aspect of the design. The building is low in profile, matching the height of the museum of Liverpool. These two structures act as ‘bookends’ to the iconic three graces. The colonnades are materiality of the powerhouse are also referential to the immediate buildings. Paying homage to these local landmarks as well as aiming to create a visually homogenous civic space.

14

First Name Surname 2020 Portfolio

It also became important that the powerhouse would enhance the waterfront walking route and not impead people moving past the site. The colonnades that are orientated toward the water allow people to move past the building or even interact with it without having to enter.

The Mersey Observation Centre is a space for river system monitoring and climate related awareness through artistic exhibition. The building is nestled into the river wall at the festival gardens site to the South of the city. The public is guided into the building through a eries of ramps that run parralel with the river. This action of descending into the building and then reascending at the other end is meant to emmulate the action of tidal rises and falls. From end to end the ramps strecth 130M parrallel to the promenade. However, this space is broken down by little ‘inlets’ in the retaining wall that become outside gallery spaces, providing shelter and visual breaks from the long stretch of the ramps. These outside galleries are also opportunites to look through the solid walls of the building and glimpse at the river through carefully placed windows. Once inside the building, you must descend even further to access the gallery space. At this point, visitor are now below the high tide mark. South-facing windows line the building and provide the opportunity to be in constant visual connection the water.

The promenade is the driving feature behind the design of the building, ramps gently lower people from the prom into the bilding. This is to create a closer relationship between people, architecture and the river. The building is seperated into programmatic functions and arranged in a linear sequence to accentuate the promenade. The entrance to the buildings becomes a focal point that sits perpendicular and juts above the prom to create visual intrest. It also becomes a control for the programming by seperating the lab and public spaces. To then further push the interaction between the building and the river, the gallery space is lowered closer to the high tide.

The building aims to become a new landscape housed between the water and the land as if carved out of the river wall itself. The materiality of the building speaks to this effect. An entirley simple material palette of a textured finish ash-crete and natural timber. The ash-crete is mixed in with larger stone aggregate to create a rough and textured feeling to the architecture. This is also meant to emulate the pre-existing river wall and create the sense that the building is completely homogenous with the wall. The walls and floors are all constructed of this cast in situ ashcrete. Invoking a feeling of solidity and intention in the architecture and its relationship to the conditions around it. To soften the harshness of the ash-crete, timber accents are used throughout, for example, the roofs are created out of lightweight timber as well as the doors and window trims. These simple additions of natural texture add warmth to otherwise cold spaces and create tactility in the building.

The waterfront elevation of the building is intended to mirror the properties of the river, streamlined and linear. And also aims to be as least disruptive as possible to the environment around it. Allowing the trees and green space behind it to take visual precedence.

The only aspect of the roof profile that juts above the prommenade line are the central walls that indicate the entrance to the building. The windows of the waterfront elevation are repetative and like the qualities of the roof that mirror the river, these aim to mirror the trees in the background.

The faces of the square that open up to both Bold street and Wood street are ‘shut off’ by seemingly oversized monolithic polycarbonate walls. This is to provide a visual break in the vernacular architecture. creating a playful focal point in the life of the street. To maintain the character of the square and work in concert with the daylight the theatre is pulled to one side of the square creating an open courtyard space with the adjacent building. The courtyard space maintains pre existing features from the square such as some of the trees, lighting and public furniture. Passers by are guided inwards by through the polycarbonate walls to find themselves in the box office which borrows the vibrant neon light from the signage of the adjacent building. When purchasing your tickets the theatre hangs, 4M at its lowest point, overhead as a reminder of your setting and eventual destination. The Lightbox bar is an even more enclosed and intimate space with the theatre looming just 3M overhead.
