Major cities are becoming destination spots for people to live in and look for work and Ghent is an example of this. Over the past few decades, Ghent has transformed from an industrial city into a vibrant, up-and-coming, social and open urban centre. URBAN CHALLENGES Urbanisation leads to concentrated energy use which leads to greater air pollution with significant impact on human health. Additionally, urbanisation comes with increasing demands in housing and can lead to urban sprawl. AMBITION The scheme intend to explore a sustainable and optimal solution in dealing with the densification of a growing city. This includes exploring different urban issues to do with urban heights, walking distances, mixed of uses and different block types. NEW SUPERBLOCK MODEL Adapting the Barcelona Superblock, the Ghent model aims to provide density and relief of greenery which is desired in the area of the site. Built on reclaimed land, the scheme will be people-centred and aims to promote active mobility to help reduce motorised transport within the site.
SUPERBLOCK DEVELOPMENT Intensifying the site with mixed block types will help create a walkable community where maximum walking distance is 250m within the site. The scheme aims to cater for the community’s needs therefore eliminating car use inside the superblock.

In doing a site analysis of the proposed Ghent Superblock, I was able to choose the quadrant that is most interesting for me to work on for the Thesis project. Quadrant 3 is located in the waterfront, has direct cross-route connection and is passed by the traffic. The main proposal for the quadrant is to create a densely populated neighbourhood, while providing basement and garden provisions and preserving shop front identities within the area which are common attributes in Ghent. Proposal for basement theatres allows the quadrant to be the perfoming arts hub of the area.

Nieuw Dokken Heights contain 210 units of varying sizes, ranging from studios to spacious two bedroom homes. These units are organised in a way that celebrates diversity, creating a mix of expensive units and affordable spaces together in the same floor instead of the conventional model in which the most expensive units are placed on the highest levels. The complex is designed and orientated in such a way to provide panoramic views in every direction and maximise natural lighting in the dwellings. The varying heights of the blocks allows for differents shading conditions in the shared garden. Each residential block have at least 2 entrances; they can be accessed from the street and the garden.

ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGIES PLENUM VENTILATION The theatre uses hybrid plenum ventilation system. How it works is, it draws air from the outside in to the ground and the air is cooled as it passes through the pipes. The air is cooled further when it reaches the heat exchanger in the plant room. Once, the air is properly cooled, it then passes through the ducts and distributed from below the audience’s seat. The hot air then rises above and into the extraction outlet and then exits though the shared garden above. MICRO-CLIMATE IN SHARED GARDEN The gaps between the varying heights of the residential blocks allows for micro-climate to occur in the garden. Certain areas within the garden are shaded or exposed direct sunlight. The gaps also allows the wind to be distributed evenly across the shared garden. ACOUSTICS CONSIDERATION
Acoustics are significant consideration in the design, operation and construction of the theatre where the quality of sound and its intelligibility are very important. Proper placement of acoustical panels in the theatre is critical to its technical performance. In architectural acoustics, there are three possible responses we can expect from in an acoustical panel: it can absorb sound, reflect sound, or it can diffuse sound. In the theatre, reflectors are placed carefully over the stage area so they reinforce the performers, musical instuments or voices. Reflectors and diffusers are placed on the side so the reflections are aimed to the listeners’ ears to create a sense of intimacy as opposed to a sense of spaciousness. On the back wall, deep absorption are applied to prevent echoes reflecting back to the stage and disrupting the performance.

The podium park concept is the main element of my scheme as it allows me to maximise land use while introducing relief of green spaces across the site which is heavily desired within this area of Ghent.
This physical model was made using 3mm mdf boards that was cut using laser machine and then glued and stacked to create the building heights of the massing model. Having a physical model can has helped me have a better understanding the scale of the superblock, its urban grain, accesses within the site, as well as identifying open spaces and enclosures.

GHENT EXPO - EXPERIMENTAL SOLUTIONS FOR ECO- HOUSING Ghent is a city and a municipality in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It is the capital and largest city of the East Flanders province, and the second largest municipality in Belgium, after Antwerp. The city originally started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Scheldt and Leie and in the Late Middle Ages became one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe, with some 50,000 people in 1300. It is a port and university city. SITE CONTEXT Our chosen site is located on the north-east of Ghent that stretches around the Houtdok, the Achterdok and the Handelsdok. It has strong connection to the rail line with the Gent-Dampoort located nearby. It has limited public transport connection and has no direct access from R40 route. TRACES FROM THE PAST The site has strong connections to its industrial heritage, with the site being the old port. In order to make its rich history live on, old cranes, tracks, mooring posts and other typical port elements within the site will be retained or given a new role within the scheme. The cranes once dominated the view of the old harbour dockland in the north-east of the city. Together with the port activities, they almost disappeared. Seven old cranes have since been renovated and installed within the harbour and now creates a stunning crane landscape. DISCONNECTED FROM THE CANAL Existing industrial activities block any access to the canal and reduces the site’s visual value.

DEMOGRAPHICS Projections indicate that Ghent will become a majorityminority city by 2040. A lot of neighborhoods already have a majority of inhabitants that are of foreign origin, such as Sluizeken-Tolhuis-Ham, Brugse Poort, Bloemekenswijk, Muide and Rabot. Other notable neighborhoods with almost a majority are Dampoort, Ledeberg and Nieuw Gent. AMBITION GHENT EXPO 2030 For this scheme we are proposing a scenario the City of Ghent will host a world expo in 2030. We believe that a large scale event like an expo will not just benefit the neighbourhood of out chosen site, but also the City of Ghent, both economically, and environmentally, while regerating the site. With the site having strong connection to the Ghent-Ternezuene Canal, the expo will also relaunch the City as a European port powerhouse THEME OF THE EXPO We have decided to choose Experimental Solutions for Eco-housing as the theme of our expo. The expo aims to invite everyone from around the world to look at greener ways of living in the city. LEGACY When the expo finishes, and all the temporary buildings are demolished, what the neighbourhood will be left with are the new infrastructure implemented as well as lots of sustainable housing developed which people can then move in to. The legacy aims to create a well connected city while tackling the housing crisis that exists within the area of the site as well as preventing urban sprawl.
CULTURE IN GHENT CYCLING An immense cycling culture exists in Ghent like many of the Flemish cities. Majority of people in all demographic in Ghent cycles to places, as part of the City’s contribution and promotion of sustainable living. It is known that the City plans to phase out cars in the next 10 years and promote public transport making Ghent a totally green city. MUSIC Music is a big part of Ghent’s culture with many music festivals occuring throughout the year in different venues across the City. VEGGIE DAY Veggie Day or Meat-Free Thursday was launched in 2007, as an initiative from Belgium’s biggest vegetarian organisation the EVA (Ethical Vegetarian Alternative) as a way to encourage the public to eat no meat nor fish at least one day a week for the benefit of our heath and the health of the planet.
“Just one meat-free day a week makes a massive difference and it has been calculated that “if all 243,000 inhabitants of Ghent participate in Thursday Veggie Day, it has the same effect on carbon emissions as when 19,000 cars are taken off the road.”
FESTIVITIES AND EVENTS Ghent is a cultural city with mixture of rich history and funky events, exhibitions, festivals, theatre plays and concerts. There are many more festivities that occur during the year - the classical music Flanders Festival, Film Fest, the Six Days Cycling Race, Winter Festival and the Ghent Light Festival.

TRAM NETWORK
DOCK CRANES
The inner city of Ghent is well connected by tram. However, the site is disconnected from the tram network.
There are 7 dock cranes within the Dok Noord and the Oude Dokken harbour. These cranes have been ‘retired’ and are now part of the industrial heritage of the City. The cranes can be used as reference points when walking in and around the site.
CYCLING
CONCRETE SILO
There is an immense cycling culture that exists in Ghent with more than 13000 public bicycle racks within the streets of the City. While the inner city have incorporated cycling lanes within its roads, the roads within the site have far less designated cycling lanes.
The old concrete factory in the centre of the site is now part of the industrial heritage of the city.
R40 ROUTE
WATERWAY NETWORK
The R40 is a prominent ring road in Ghent that connects the different neighbourhoods of the city.
The site has a strong connection to the inland waterway network of Ghent, connected to the Ghent-Terneuzen canal, which makes the City well connected to the European Markets. There are lots of barges docked within the sites harbour, with residents using them as their living quarters.
GENT-DAMPOORT The site has strong connection to the railways with the station located 5 mins south-east of the site. Gent-Dampoort has direct connections to Antwerp and Brussels as well as Gent-Sint Pieters Station.
N458 ROUTE The N458 is a prominent route for truck and lorries delivering goods to or from the industrial buldings within the area.

SITE ANALYSIS
FIGURE GROUND The inner city and the district of Muide-Muelestede to the north consists predominantly of residential and mixed-used buildings while the north-west side of the city and the site area consists predominantly of industrial buildings. Building heights across the City ranges from 6m - 20m. The tallest buildings or structures are located in the Dok Noord and Oude Dokken areas.
LANDSCAPE The landscape of Ghent consists of greenfield lands, pocket parks, green corridors and private green spaces. There is a great demand for more parks and open green spaces to be incorporated within the City, including a city park.

STREET PATTERN & HIERARCHY Ghent have curvelinear street pattern originated from the network of canals that helped form the City. The primary roads like the R40 as well as the railways have more heirarchy due their location or connectivity to other neighbourhoods or cities. The rest of the road networks have less heirarchy as they have less traffic intensities and they connect to the residential areas.
LAND USE & DENSITY The inner city consists of medium to high dense residential areas. The Muide-Muelestede neighbourhood in the north consists of low dense residentials. The north-west consists of industrial buildings within the waterfront with some low dense residential within the inner neighbourhoods of the area. The site consists of mostly industrial buildings. The site has visual and historical value. There are mixed-used and commercial buildings in the Dok Noord.

EVERTON LIBRARY EXTRACT FROM THE REPORT The Everton Library is an ‘at risk’ building within Liverpool, being listed on the Victorian Society’s top ten list of most dilapidated Victorian buildings. The project is currently on its early stages of planning, with some of its projected funding having been secured. The clients have strong ideas about their vision for the library and it is all the matter of securing the rest of the funding before proceeding with design work and construction. They are aiming to secure more funds by showing potential funders the current state of the building and highlighting its importance to its community. However, due to health and safety issues, accessibility to the building has proven to be difficult and so they are in need of ideas on how to provide access to building to people through other means. Curtins are involved as a consulting body for the project and have also provided the means of creating a matterport scan of the building which enables a virtual tour access to the building. THE SCOPE OF WORKS The scope of works can be identified through the deliverables devised by the team following the first client meeting. It was agreed between the team and the client that given the time period we were given we would produce: 1. a video which demonstrates the state of the building right now. The video will be easy to access for all and in being so will serve as an interesting study on how future elements of the project can be conveyed to all parts of the local community. 2. a further, easily accessible “Vr type” 360 interior view of 2 key spaces within the building that can be accessed via a platform such as youtube and can form an effective and immersive part of any presentation that can also be sent out as an email footer or as part of any promotional correspondence. 3. a further interior view as above which will deal with briefly showcasing how an at least, semi-rejuvenated space could look and deal with some of the more prominent design issues. 4. all Plans and sections for use in the planning stage of the project. The scope of works have developed over the 8 week period through the client consultations. The second deliverable has been integrated with voiceover of the people’s memories. The third deliverable has been scrapped as the clients were only interested with the existing state of the building. The matterport scan of the Library was converted into a gaming engine as part of our proposed alternative medium. The virtual reality, takes the user into the building infused with sound effects for immesive experience. 62

INTERGENERATIONAL HOUSING BRIEF The scheme aims to offer intergenerational co-housing solution for the elderly. As the baby boomers approach their retirement, and they search for better alternative to nursing/retirement homes, intergenerational living offers the elderly a chance to live among a community of different age group where they can share facilities and encourage social interaction. The positive effects of intergenerational communication on the elderly are well researched: it extends life expectancy and reduces loneliness and social isolation while also giving young people a sense of connection with older generations. The scheme offers affordability to suit the low income and adaptability to fit each occupiers needs. It consists of 42 units with size ranging from 35m2 to 105m2 to suit the needs of occupants whether it is for private ownership or shared accomodation. Shared facilities like laundry room, workshops as well communal dining area where residents can eat together at least once a week to promote and encourage social interaction and shared garden where residents can grow their own food and plants.

INTERIOR STUDY
The scheme aims to create dwellings for intergenerational community, therefore the spaces for each typologies takes into consideration the comfort and accessibility of the elderly. The site is very open and therefore exposed to direct sunlight. Overhangs and perforated screens were used on the modules to provide shade to dwellings without sacrificing view from the balcony that overlooks the shared garden. The 40m2 Studio Unit was used as the sample module for the study conducted as this is the most prominently used unit in the scheme, It is also the base module for the larger typologies.

LIGHT STUDY
For the purpose of this study I have used the 40m2 Studio Unit as the sample module as it is the most prominently used module in the scheme. It is also important to note the Equinox and Solstice dates differ each year and so I used the year 2019 for this study. While each Equinoxes and Solstices have different specific time in their respective dates, I have used 12:00 noon as my sample time of day as it is when direct sunlight is at its optimum angle.

ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGY
The scheme aims to employ certain strategies that will help to promote sustainability and boost the ecosystem of the site. Through shared activities, social interaction will be enforced within the intergenerational community and with it, a healthy living and lifestyle. STRATEGIES CONSIDERED Bin Stalls Bin stalls are located on the north side of the building. It is easily accessible by the residents and the bin collectors, making the collection easy and convenient. Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) The heat pump uses fluid to absorb heat from the ground. Using electricity, the fluid is compressed to a higher temperature. Heat generated will be used for underfloor heating and hot water uses for showers, baths and taps. Photovoltaics With a roof area of approximately 700m2, as well as the building orientated south, the scheme will take advantage in employing photovoltaics to provide power for the dwellings. Smart meters will be in each dweling unit to allow its residence to manage energy consumption. Underfloor Heating Underfloor heating is used to provide heat on the dwellings, it is powered by the heat pump. Water Tank Storage (Building) Rainwater harvesting is employed in the strategy. Rainwater is collected from the rooftop and is stored in an underground water tank storage beneath the building. Rainwater collected will be used as grey water for toilets. Modular Shading Overhangs and perforated timber screens are used in all dwelling units to provide shading for the dwellings without sacrificing the balcony view that overlooks the shared garden. Bicycle Storage Bike storage is located on the east side of the site where the main entrance is. The scheme aims to promote sustainable transportation. Climbing Plants Climbing plants add visual aesthetic to the staircore, all while promoting flora. Water Tank Storage (Shared Garden) Dedicate rainwater harvesting is employed for the shared garden to be used for the sprinkler system. Rainwater is collected through permeable paving. Shared Garden The semi-private, open garden is for residents to be used for gardening as well as for other activities. The scheme aims to promote social interaction between the residents of all age group through shared interests and activities, while promoting flora and improving the site’s micro-climate and eco-system. Deciduous Trees Deciduous trees are good shading devices and are in phase with the thermal year. They gain and lose leaves in response to the temperature changes. They also act as natural barrier to reduce visual overlooking.

SECTION CUT MODEL SCALE: 1:50
The section cut model is built at 1:50 scale to enable in-dept physical studies of the exteriorwork and the interior space of a section of the building. Materials used for the making of the model are majority of mount board with minor uses of plywood for the base thickness as well as the timber screen for the outdoor staircore. Thin perspex were used for the glass windows. The materials were cut using the laser machine and each cut pieces were meticulously glued together in order to represent the proposed housing scheme as accurate as possible.

SITE MODEL SCALE: 1:250 The site model consists of 3D printed blocks of the surrounding buildings and the proposed housing scheme on a laser drawn mount board site plan. It was built at 1:250 scale. The aim of the model is to show the buildings in massing blocks, to illustrate the relationship between the building heights of the proposed housing block and the surrounding council houses. The view from the west side of the site clearly illustrates the height of the proposed housing is almost in level with the heights of its neighbouring houses.

INDIVIDUAL MASTERPLAN BRIEF The Old Olive Mill was a major industry that was part of the development of Elefsina during the Industrial Revolution. The neighbouring port played an important role in the expansion of its production with direct export links to Patras and Pireaus. The factory consists of 23 buildings that chronologically belonged to different phases of the plant's life. Since the factory has closed in 1960s, it has been used as a venue for the Aeschylia Festival every summer. Most buildings around the site have been perfectly preserved and others have deteriorated or collapsed. For the Individual Masterplan, I have chosen the undefined area of the complex surrounded by collapsed warehouse buildings. There is potential for the area to become a square if the surrounding buildings are developed. I intend to retain the edifice of the former warehouse on the right as they give a past remembrance of the surrounding.

S P E C IA L IS T S T UDY LOCATION: GLASGOW, SCOTLAND
GLASGOW SCHOOL OF ART EXTRACT FROM THE STUDY 2018 was a special year as it marked the 150th anniversary of the turn-of-the-century architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society, Hunterian Mackintosh Collection and National Trust for Scotland all planned a range of exciting events and exhibitions throughout the year. However, 2018 will not be remembered for all these events. Instead people will look back at the destruction that befell the Mackintosh Building of the Glasgow School of Art:
“The loss of Mackintosh’s masterpiece is absolutely unforgiveable. Glasgow’s single-most famous building, a gem in Scotland’s crown, burned down before our eyes. This should have been the best-protected building in Scotland. Like thousands of others, I want answers. I want to know ‘where the buck stops.’ ” – Professor Tony Jones Many belives that the Glasgow School of Art is one of the greatest masterwork of Mackintosh. It was a very important monument to the people of Glasgow; it was viewed in Scotland and the world over as a totally iconic building. So it shook the world when the building burnt down for the second time, and this time leaving the building in irreparable state. Mackintosh would be turning in his grave if he saw what had befallen to his masterpiece. A very bold statement, but imaginably true. The Study aims to expand on what went wrong the first time, and then, the second time the building burnt down. Roger Billcliffe, who has been a strident critic of the GSA’s conduct following the first fire, called the building “a firetrap waiting to happen”.

EXTERIOR-WORK The School have confirmed in past interviews that the building will be rebuilt ‘brick by brick’. A rebuild could take up to seven years to complete and will definitely cost a considerable amount, with some estimating the cost to be in excess of £100 million; the first restoration proved to be quite costly already. In addition to this, there were reports of having craftsmen commissioned to painstakingly recreate the wooden furniture; it is understood that the School had taken the safe measures of recording the dimensions and materials of all the furniture pieces after the first fire. The study concludes with a discussion based upon the reports submitted by professionals and experts to the Scottish Parliament’s Education and Culture Committee. The conclusion drawn from the discussion determines the appropriate proceeding for the future of Mackintosh’s fire-ravaged building. Is it worth all the money to rebuild what could be perceived as a of Mackintosh’s masterpiece – a ‘mockintosh’? All of these were covered in the study of the Glasgow School of Art.
