About me I have always had a passion for creativity, which i was able to explore within my undergraduate degree at liverpool john moores. After my degree i took a year to gain experience and broaden my skill range working on small scale residential scale to larger more commercial projects around the wirral. This helped me prepare for my studies at john moores to start my masters. My masters has helped me with how i present my work and explored new methods in design and form. This was something that i didnt get a chance to do in undergrad based on my skills at the time. Throughout the course of my masters ive been able to develop my skills for after my masters and hopefully help me on my journey to becoming a fully qualified architect.

Abstract

It Is human nature to grow and change, and with this we like to change our surroundings to suite our needs. With this change come new urban centres that grow and spread that cover great distances , and soaring heights that we push the limits on what works. If urban centres continue the way they do issues start to arise and development comes to a halt.

“Let us change our traditional attitude to the construction of programs. Instead of imagining that our main task is to instruct a computer what to do, let us concentrate rather on explaining to human beings what we want a computer to do.” Donald knuth

Change is natural and changes in technology happen, these changes can aid in revitalising our existing urban environments and creating newer developments in more sustainable ways. This project is all about the looking for newer more sustainable means to revolutionise the construction industry in the materials we use, the speed we work at and the impact it has on the environment around us. More research and development needs to be one in order to further advance and change what we know as the urban centre. This project works into an area that is In need of growth and revitalisation and so can work as a catalyst and an example across the UK. the UK is in dire need of more sustainable and afforrdable means to help it meet the demand of housing and to reach the targets the government had set. we must push for this development, with this development newer forms , shapes and experiences can be had within cities , dwellings and architecture as a whole. how we interact with it and the sense of the urban centre and the growth it has.

Liverpool’s centre for alternative and progressive technology purpose is to develop and enhance new and emerging technologies with the mindset of revolutionising the construction industry. Not only focused for Liverpool but on a national level. Our urban environments can often become stagnant with progression and growth. This scheme seeks to make a change to how the industry operates in terms of its stages and the speed work at. Technology has always been at the fore front of development, the site takes this literally in how the site itself can be formed out of the research it undertakes growing and introducing new methods to be used in the construction industry. This R&D centre will seek to find new ways for development both in terms of speed, materiality and economically viability. With the progressive nature of technology, there are various ways in which technology has been used within the industry, but only on a small scale. the facility would translate this into more large scale operation for it to meet the construction industry standard. Some technologies are currently in usage but are not having the impact that is needed for any real improvement, this site and what it aims to do would be put more of an importance to this and use this as a driving for how development can take shape, this could in turn give us new perspectives on how we interact and perceive our urban environments. Through ever changing innovations of technology aspects of our urban environments develop and progress , whilst some areas are left due to economic standing or inefficient methods. Through revolutionising and introducing new methods to counter urban environment issues such as housing crisis it can also bring Revitalisation within the area as the site adapts also to new technologies. Using the alternative means of technology could create new urban environments and provide a better quality of life. The project wouldn’t be instantaneous however, through development of technology it can be used to construct newer areas for further progression around the site and newer technologies. The site would go through phases and change and grow due to need. Potentially starting off with temporary foundations to then adapt and grow into something more permanent. The phases would provide various forms over a time span, meaning the building(s) could take upon multiple forms over its life cycle. This is all part of the aim continuing from the group masterplan to create the dingle as an entity in of itself. In the group scheme we talked about introducing local or new businesses into the new commercial units implemented that would improve quality of life in the dingle and the surrounding outer lying city districts, this will come as a biproduct of the site and the national effect the research would have. 2020 Portfolio Simon Dore 1 2020 Portfolio Simon Dore

The initial stages would be the ground works to begin making the terrace and its underground warehouse spaces. These spaces would be crucial in the connectivity of the whole site and how it all becomes interconnected and useable as one space. these spaces would be for both prototyping at various scales but also the technology testing of itself to see the likelihood of it being reliable and sustainable enough to be used in building construction in the future. Stage two would be building and finishing these warehouse spaces into enclosed spaces and working the pedestrian routes into the terrace making it effective for movement and connecting two parts of dingle to one another making it easier for movement. stage three of the developments would be to set up the initial office and research labs. this would be the start needed and gradually grow and expand to accommodate labs and the necessary space for becoming the catalyst. The computer buildings is where everything starts based around the design phase. This building would be the catalyst for the rest of the site and encourage development and growth which in turn would eventually lead to stage four of the site.

2

Simon Dore 2020 Portfolio

Simon Dore 2020 Portfolio

Stage four is the implementation of the warehouses to the site, these will sit into the site where their ground floor is actually a lower ground floor in the site as a whole. These warehouses will house the development of physical and 1:1 scale prototypes of housing construction in multiple workshops and large scale factory style spaces. these warehouses will be the start and will have some preliminary zones for technology, but the spaces would largely remain open plan, so the building isn’t restricted for when technology changes. The scale of the building is based upon the special requirements researched early on and has the capabilities of three story construction and prototyping. This stage could be broken into two as there is two warehouses both of the same design but they could form out of need and demand so one might be built before the other and the other will follow if the projects and more sustainable options occur or need testing. These buildings provide specialist spaces in and around the site.

stage five is not the final product, far from it there is no limit to the sites development as it is designed to grow and shape for whatever the need is. As the technologies grow and advance so shall the site grow with it and bring the rest of the dingle with it and other urban centres. 2020 Portfolio Simon Dore 3 2020 Portfolio Simon Dore

The office / computer building was designed to explore the early stages of design using new computer based technologies to find ways to increase productivity and new ways to help get better results for the client in terms of social needs and what is best to come up with effective solutions to existing problems, such as the current housing crisis. If the usage of new technologies can be used to solve an old or existing issue that is the purpose of this building and the rest of the site.

There are spaces which can be used for multi purpose uses for either more studio/ workshop spaces or to bring in the people requesting testing and prototypes to present progress.

Warehouse space is allocated and based upon construction and internal testing of prototyping in a controlled environment able to simulate certain conditions.

The external space connecting the two warehouses and the underground spaces external tests can be undertaken in unsimulated conditions and used for moving off site.

Computer labs and smaller testing spaces for components to be undetaken so its not all large scale operations Basement space is mainly storage and is location of power keeping the facilities going.

With the warehouses being mostly work spaces it was important to make sure that the workshop floor was off limits to general public from wandering in. This was done by level changes. The upper floors whilst some construction work still commencd it was more open and safer for public members or those coming to the site to bring forward ideas of growth. 2020 Portfolio Simon Dore 9 2020 Portfolio Simon Dore

The spaces were meant to be open plan for the movement of both goods , projects and people. Each space was to be an extension of the atrium space some being enclose others more open and Movement within the buildings were similar to how the site movement was, this was due to the modularity being uniform from exterior to the interior spaces. Movement is encouraged and the experience of different routes also carries through, whether you move via corridors or through the modular pods that overlook the atrium you feel the vastness of the workspaces.

The external wall build-up and finish, would be made up of concrete facing panels. to get the effective greeble pattern on the facade. the panels would require prefabrication. the wall material would be the same as the paving materials and follow the greeble patterns. The combination of concrete basin and the steel frame, works well both in terms of design concept and for structural compatibility and future potential. The ground work , provides a strong solid basin that allows for a light weight flexible structure to be placed on top. The steel frame allows for vast open spaces for the works within and the modular grid of 10x10 allows for future growth and ability to expand when needed. The interesting aspect of the frame internally is that the frame contains two modular prefab pods that sit within the frame work and connect with the main skeleton. The prefabrication aspect makes the construction time easier and allows for modification and change which is a key fundamental principal of the site concept.

Window ventilation and acoustic duct system With the warehouse buildings being high active areas with machinery and construction and prototyping , working environments can often become busy ad the air can become thick with harmful particles that can cause harm to workers and anyone who occupies this space. The spaces have supply by mechanical ventilation to move this air out and circulate making work environments safer and comfortable. When work areas are not in use or less populated mechanical ventilation may use more energy than is required, therefore vents would be integrated into the window frames to allow for air flow.

Ventilation HVAC system to be implemented throughout the warehouses for the combined heating and air quality. The ventilation part of HVAC system components will guarantee that there is a constant stream of fresh air circulating the building. A HVAC control system ensures the air in a building is replaced with cleaner air from the outside by disposing of it through a ventilation exhaust unit. The ventilation aspect is key within these spaces to remove any and all pollutants from the air so that the working environments can be safe and comfortable for those working In. the idea was to have a system to be able to turn on and off as and when is needed as a boost to remove particulates when concentrations become too high. Safety for the occupants is high priority in a working environment such as this.

When deciding systems for the site , sustainability was always at the forefront of decisions. The site was is very open and can work well for all kinds of systems so it was just choosing the right one for the situation of the site. The combination that came about wokred well towards the goal of the site.

PRACTICE TASK THESIS

there are only four areas that are inaccessible to disabled persons, these mezzanine levels marked in red. these mezzanine levels are just extra workshop spaces. if this was to hold up planning and potentially funding. the easiest remedy is to implement a platform lift to fit within the stairs frame for ease of movement. diagram below shows placement option to make sure work spaces arent effected. platform lifts an be installed fairly eaisly whether its installed with the floor or after the main structure is completed.

Lift and stairs in terms of part M and part B are designed in line with the regulations. The stairs width and risers allow for comfortable transitions between floors with built in handrails. These built in handrails make the stair well less cluttered, for ease of movement. In terms of fire safety the stairwells are protected lobbies with fire protection on the doors to isolate space from other spaces. In events of fire the stairwell and lift can be used still, in low light levels emergency lighting the steps have inlayed lighting on the under side of the treads to light steps. The steps also have anti slip strips to reduce the risk of falling if movement is faster than a standard pace. Lighting is also inlayed into the handrail system to provide light at all times and in times of emergency. The anti-slip strips can be specified to be painted with glow in the dark emergency directions also. In each stair block there is protected lobby space to congregate and a location for disabled persons to congregate at the top of the stair. Whilst planning the stairs a 1500 m turning circle at the top of a set of stairs to allow for movement and for sufficient spaces for all types of person to be able to move.

When it comes to fire suppression throughout each floor and building within the scheme has been outfitted with an imist vapour system to spread and suppress fires whilst causing minimal damage to equipment and property, like some more generic systems would. The coverage of these areas, would differ due to the varying volumes of space and the room for fire to spread. The coverage is ideal for areas with machinery and industrial spaces. in keeping with building regulations and fire suppression , the i mist system is only one part of the fire saftey systems implemented. automatic fire detection systems would be in place where electrical equipment would be in higher usage. to reduce the spread of fire , fire doors would be provided with either 30 minutes protection or an hour where appropriate. other methods such as intenral fire resistant paint or render to suppress fire to one location rather than spreading.

Risks aren’t always a negative. Being able to effectively identify and manage risks can lead to increased profits, establishing good relationships with clients that result in more projects, and being able to expand your business into new markets and sectors. Types of Construction Risks For proper construction risk management, you need to know the types of risks inherent in construction projects. These can be financial, contractual, operational, and environmental and can be caused by both internal and external sources.

Vertical circulation travel distance Verticality is quite important within these buildings. And the majority of the vertical movement is set on either side of the buildings to remove moving in potential hazardous areas. Separating the movement to the sides means that the middle spaces can be unhindered and more free to be used as work spaces. wheelchair refuge One each of the fire stairs/main staircase there is sufficient turning circle for movement of disabled persons. The Refuge spot is located in a protected lobby space adjacent to the stairwell as a safe spot to meet and be space from fire. Each floor the refuge spots are in the same spot so that in an event of a fire the spots are easy to find. Accessible locations Accessibility of the site is paramount for freedom of movement over the site. the site is used as a means to move from top of the cliff on Grafton road to the lower streets towards the waterfront. The steps have ramps integrated into them for ease of access. And to access the computer building platform lifts have been implemented to grant full access. Interior spaces have been planned so that movement and activities aren’t limiting or restrictive for the occupants making the spaces comfortable to be in. The warehouses also have full disabled access for all levels the only areas inaccessible could be the mezzanine levels on the upper floors. doorways and rooms have been planned accordingly with regulatiosn to allow for a 1500mm turning circle within rooms and for the doorways to have 300mm for the opening to be accessible to disabled persons.

SPECIALIST STUDY

SPECIALIST STUDY : BROWNFIELD OR GREENBELT reason behind this study is to explore the current status of urban regeneration and to look deeper into the future potential and possible outcomes for regeneration. This study could help outline how to improve development and our usage of land in order to help ease any environmental damages that brownfield site has caused or to halt the loss of greenbelt. The matter of where to develop and options comes as a matter of debate. In many circumstances’ developers opt for the more desirable location, newer opinions though counter of developing within the brownfield sites and through the process of remediation and design sites which may not be desirable can become so through investment into it. To gather this research, reports of governments’ for figures and local councils’ housing targets were reviewed. the evidence found would shed light into how development is being managed and undertaken around the north western region of the UK. Specifically looking at Liverpool region council and other surrounding councils if relevant. Other resources include textbooks that offer guidance for the clean-up and optimal solutions for sustainable and environmentally viable options for development. All the resources used have helped gain an understanding both how development and regeneration of urban environments work and how best to go about it.

In relatition to urban environments and its regeneratition, developmental change is posititive. For example, populatition increase creates an inflflux of new developments, which in turn benefifits the economy overall and improves the urban centre; whereby the industrial changes prompt commercialisatition in these areas and increasing jobs. Technology doesn’t have an impact like the other factors, it becomes the fuel which brings about new developments and makes the newer developments easier to achieve. Technological advancements have always been a driving force for change, the best example is the industrial revolutition and how it drastitically changed the way we used and interacted with our urban environments. Industry created new demand and had an impact on major urban centres and had an increase in the diversity of demographic in the area. Growth of an area can have a remarkable impact, improving quality of life within it by developing on what is already present.
