This scheme is looking to revitalise the river front of Chester and attract both public and private sectors. It is a platform for entrepreneurs, educational facilities, mentorship, knowledge sharing, entertainment and exhibits. The proposal is not only focusing on the Innovation Hub but also on the public realm and green spaces around it. Public spaces create sense of atmosphere, encourage activities and draw more attention to the area. People will be able to engage with the location through the newly designed promenade, public square and also enjoy the public facilities of the building - the IMAX Theatre, restaurants, bars as well as VR workshops.

SITE ANALYSIS Enthusiasm and community spirit are the fundamental principles of urban regeneration alongside with the importance of reviving our cities through the power of creativity. The Innovation Hub represents the creative industries as a powerful tool towards urban regeneration and development. It is not only a modern way of working and living but also an inventive way of thinking about urban areas. This building is a celebration of the relationship between entertainment, business and collaboration. It represents the eagerness of digital creative businesses and houses inspirational spaces for people to enjoy and immerse into. By designing the Innovation Hub, a new focal point for entrepreneurship in a co-working environment is being created. The project’s design depends on the positive influence of the physical environment on humans and on the success of a multi-use building dedicated to developing immersive technologies and experiences. Co-working spaces are build on interaction, flexibility and partnership. They revolve around creating a community, designing better places and ways to work, and developing new, innovative ideas.

MEMBERS + BUSINESS PLAN The Innovation Hub will be a place dedicated to creative digital businesses, immersive technology and will create the opportunity for people to learn and advance in using various virtual reality tools.
WHY DO WE NEED THE INNOVATION HUB?
The focus is on building interactive communities, in which people share their common interests and ideas. Co-working space keep growing and developing, due to the desire among young people to become entrepreneurs. Instead of working from cafes, garages or home people get the opportunity to move into co-working offices and use not only their convenient facilities but also experience different networking events and collaborations. Places like that are not about fixed office hours and dress code but about a great diveristy of people who constantly exchange ideas and feed their own creativity and productivity. Co-working spaces prioritize people’s comfort and happiness in the working place. The focus falls on positivity, community, freedom and opportunities. Co-working culture is spreading rapidly and everyone is leaning towards that life-style. It offers a range of facilities, flexible business plans, entertainment and leisure.

WELL-BEING When analysing working environments and psychological affects, it is important to consider how the relationship between worker and surroundings has evolved in time. Environmental psychology is a complex study, comprised of theories, research and real life practices with the purpose of defining a more personal relationship between individuals, buildings and their surroundings. “Designing physical environment has great influence on the mental state of its occupiers and affects their attitude and behaviour. Place science is entirely concerned with the connection between space and its inhabitants. Fundamental factors used to determine human response to the physical environment are based on five senses and include lighting, temperature, noise, smell, colour, texture.” (Doseva, 2019) • Improve the built environment and the natural resources • Study Everyday Settings • Consider the person and the setting as an entity •Acknowledge the corresponding between the individuals and the environment (Gifford, 2007) 16 Rosana Doseva 2020 Portfolio

STRUCTURAL + CONSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGY AND DETAIL The project utilizes an exposed concrete frame structure. The predominant office use of the building suits this type of structure, due to its flexibility and interchangeability. It allows easy transformations of the spaces and potentially change in use if required. The large scale of the Innovation Hub allows the use of waffle concrete slabs. They reduce the extents of the foundations, provide great outlets for services integration, increase the speed of construction and provide excellent vibration control, thermal mass and fire resistance. A thin topping layer consisting of underfloor heating and floor finish, completes the floor system. All the necessary technical installations are incorporated in the waffle concrete ceilings, keeping the interrupted appearance of the space. Similarly to the exterior of the building, the interior features exposed-concrete surfaces (walls, ceilings and stairs). They are challenging the preconceptions of concrete as an uninviting and intimidating building material. Its rawness works in a combination with the warm use of light coloured silver fir. This is incorporated within the floor finishes, furniture and detailing, as well as window frames.
34 Rosana Doseva 2020 Portfolio
Flat roofs cover the two level changes in the building and house green roofs which will be developed into gardens, accessible to the Innovation Hub’s residents. This will create a new environment , provide different views towards the river and Chester and a new place to recharge amongst nature. The central piece’s structure (IMAX Dome Theatre) differentiates from the rest of the building with its lightweight geodesic steel structure. Externally its covered in GRC cladding which is a great blank canvas for the projections performed on it. Internally there is a 5 storey domed screen creating an immersive sight and sound film experience.

ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGY AND DETAIL In order to create a controlled, comfortable environment a combination of mechanical and natural ventilation will be set in place alongside with the use of heat recovery systems. The building has a double-skin system facades which leads to reduced energy consumption as the cavity between the layers acts as an insulation layer in winter time. This minimizes the need to heat the building, reducing the demand for underfloor heating. During the warmer months, the air in the envelope’s cavity will successfully navigate itself. It will provide the building with natural ventilation and fresh air, through the mechanically operable windows, and any excess heat will be avoided due to the stack effect (hot air will rise within the cavity and will be pushed out of it). The double-skin façade contains a middle layer of vertical kinetic louvres. A centre pivoted system, positioned in relation to the windows, which adapts to sunlight at different times of the day. This will prevent glare and provide shading across the building for both high midday sun and low-afternoon sun conditions.
The Innovation Hub is situated on the river edge and as per the Urban Design Proposal, there will be limited vehicular access. These factors set a more peaceful and quiet scene for the people living in the area. The Innovation Hub will accommodate not only various coworking spaces but also an IMAX Theatre (with full public access), leisure facilities and technology workshops. This highlight the importance of acoustic performance from noises not only from outside but also within the building. The inner edge of the building is defined by a continuous curtain wall and the outer edge contrasts with large windows, so laminated safety glass with acoustic characteristics will be used, which will reduce the vibrations and sound transmissions. Good sound insulation quality will also be achieved by the exposed concrete structure’s inherent mass and damping qualities.

This project explores the potentialities of urban design as a method and tool for urban regeneration, showing the consideration, design and presentation of ideas for the spatial development and regeneration of Chester. It focuses on urban design as a contemporary urban regeneration whilst considering sustainable future for the newly created sustainable communities. All these ideas are translated into an active, contemporary group work project. The design activity will be directly followed by the Thesis Project and will create context for the individual design project.

SITE LOCATION + ANALYSIS Chester in Cheshire, England is a walled city in close proximity to Wales. Chester was founded as a Roman fort and one of the last cities to fall to the Normans. To this day Chester is one of the best-maintained walled cities in England. It contains many medieval buildings, alongside with Victorian restorations. The impact of the Industrial Revolution can be seen through the many layers of infrastructure such as railway, canals and new roads leading to the city.

For our project, we have chosen to focus on redeveloping the western side of the city walls that includes a triangular parcel of land between the railway and River Dee. Within the area Water Tower Gardens can be found alongside with Dee Basin and Crane Wharf. We chose this area due to its troublesome character and great potential to re-establish a better connection from the River Dee to the city centre and bring structure to the fragmented area. A combination of small-scale interventions and large-scale development is needed so a more positive area is achieved. Chester noticeably changes character on the western side of the city walls. It transforms into a more fragmented environment including historic structures, housing and various infrastructure. There are multiple layers of infrastructure creating a dynamic landscape which is compromising the movement and legibility throughout the site. Large structures such as the racecourse add to the site’s complexity. The riverside open area comprises of disjointed buildings, surface car parking and a number of new apartment blocks to the banks of the river.

MENTAL MAPPING Mental mapping was used as a way to record initial the site response - highlighting landmarks, key views, and understanding the existing typology. Gordon Cullen believed that space should be experienced through a series of contrasting views, which is something this project aims to implement. However, views that were perceived to be of most historical importance were obstructed by massing and any open areas were imposed by unattractive surface carparks. Similarly to Cullen, Camillo Sitte believed in the importance of public open spaces in creating landmarks as well as drawing attention to those existing. Sitte also believed that public squares should have a degree of enclosure. n

This led us to consider the possible ways in which we could retain the elements of enclosure identified in our mapping while removing some of the restrictions that currently divide the community. Our understanding of Cullen, Sitte, and the picturesque method allowed us to map the site with the aim of identifying areas of both weakness and potential in order to create a typology that utilises key views which draw attention to the site’s historical landmarks, elements of enclosure and produces contrasting views along several routes through the site. 2020 Portfolio Rosana Doseva 49
INFRASTRUCTURE The various type of infrastructure define the character of the area. The railway, river, canal and road network creates a clear framework around which everything else is developed. There are a lot of newly built apartment blocks and more simillar schemes are being planned. The area itself is a short 10 min walk from the city centre. However the ring road has a severe negative impact, mostly where it meets Water Tower Street. The easiest and safest route is currently from the north through the historic walls into the Water Tower Gardens. Another link to the city centre is Crane Street and the railway viaduct which is mostly blocked and provides a poor gateway into the area. A troublesome area occurs along New Crane Street due to the negative traffic impact and compromises the encouragement of pedestrian activity. The quality of the surfacing is poor, being dominated by car parks and low quality materiality.

The Government is currently under pressure to bring this date forwards and to ban all sales of new petrol of diesel cars by 2023.This proposed scheme supports the zero-emission movement, where the reduction of air pollution has been a priority in the design process and has in turn helped shape the design and community focus of the site. The development takes the following into consideration: • Ambition to create a non-polluting community •Aim is to ban all petrol and diesel consuming cars (only allowing restricted/controlled access) • Hydrogen and electric vehicles encouraged in the area (cars, bikes, scooters etc.) •Increase focus on pedestrianisation through implementation of shared surfaces, wider pavements, narrowing roads and introducing traffic calming measures.

CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENT The masterplan proposal is to design and develop a diverse and wholesome neighbourhood that reconnects with the historic centre of Chester famously bound by the city walls. The aspirations for this proposal are to create a welcoming, attractive and secure environment consisting of open public spaces, community hubs, landscaped parks, residential developments, seasonal events promoting small local businesses and most importantly a comprehensive strategy that reconnects the river front to the City Centre. By creating this connected community it endeavours to provide a long-term sense of place and belonging where people feel involved. The site chosen for the Thesis Project is located right on the river edge, with an existing building in direct proximity, currently accomodating offices. The area has a great potential - direct connection to the river front / promenade and also to the proposed public square and newly opened viaduct connection tunels.

EVERTON LIBRARY Live Project : Group Work by Alexander McEllin, Chun Ooi, Dan De Borja, Hannah Faulkner, Henry Croker, Margaret Lomas, Rosana Doseva
68 Rosana Doseva 2020 Portfolio
2020 Portfolio Rosana Doseva 69
SCOPE OF PROJECT The brief from the client highlighted the importance of Everton Library as an ‘at risk’ building within Liverpool, citing the Victorian Society’s top ten list of most dilapidated Victorian buildings. Seeking to rectify this, the project aims to renovate the library, run by PollyPort CIC and the architects Harrison Stringfellow. Before our introduction to the project a ‘Matterport’ scan of the internal features was carried out by Curtins - Structural Engineers, which has revealed the true state of disrepair within the library. The project described to us in the brief involved the use of this ‘matterport’ scan to explore the potential the library has to offer.
70 Rosana Doseva 2020 Portfolio
After reading the brief, the student team examined the requirements as stated. We agreed that the ‘matterport’ files generated of Everton library could be used effectively to produce a detailed 3D BIM file for use within the project. The topics of accessibility and movement as well as other existing issues noted by the client will be considered and explored within the project. With the 3D information at hand, the option of holding a public event through which this information would become the centrepiece for a demonstration became plausible.
The use of virtual reality at a public event is also a goal of the scheme, with the event taking place at an undetermined time shortly after the hand over of the client report. The creation of 360 degrees photographs of two internal areas of the library for public access is also a goal in order to show the current state of the library’s disrepair. These goals as set out have two underlying qualities; 1. To provide information to the public that is easily understandable and accessible. 2. To provide in depth information and feasible options to the project architects to facilitate the progress of the project moving forward.

EVERTON The district of Everton is situated in the northeast of the city on a hilltop offering extensive views over the Mersey estuary and over to the Wirral Peninsular, North Wales and beyond. St. George’s church stands on the highest point in the city and opposite Everton Library. There was a large sandstone quarry north side of the hill (Insall Associates, 2014) were it is believed the stone from here was used to build St George’s Church (Rogers & Proctor, 2005).
72 Rosana Doseva 2020 Portfolio
Over the post-war period, the area has been exposed to a large building clearance and renovation, leaving the Everton Library as one of the last remaining old buildings around.
The last time the building functioned as a library was in 1999 after which was used by Breckfield and North Everton Neighboughood Council. In 2009 the building got vandalised which resulted missing areas of roofing leading to a severe water damage. The building hasn’t been looked after ever since, causing further dilapidation such as broken windows, blocked gutters and bird infestation. Nonetheless the building remains significantly intact and has the full potential to be restored and to continue its contribution to the area.
“As a boy, I lived a few hundred yards from Everton Library in nearby Melbourne Street. I discovered the building as a five year old in 1953 and was an ever-present up to about 1958 when I was ten. Like all libraries, it had this aura about it. We might have been noisy, excited kids in the surrounding inner city streets, but once we walked up the steps of the Everton Library and stepped across the threshold, we knew we were in a special place, full of treasures. We all knew the unwritten rule that silence was golden and tiptoed around in the children’s section in search of our own individual literary favourites. I couldn’t get enough of the ‘Just William’ books, the stories of the ‘Famous Five’, and kept coming back to borrow Enid Blyton’s ‘Magical Faraway Tree’. “ I would later write ten books myself, and I’m convinced it was those happy hours spent in Everton Library that inspired me and encouraged me to eventually become an author and a journalist...Some books were like gold dust. If you found one of Enid Blyton’s famous ‘Noddy’ books, it was as if you had won the lottery. I always struggled to secure one of these titles and often wondered if the ‘Naughty Pixies’ were somehow under instruction to make them invisible to everyone except the good girls and boys. What did that say about me? Then I received a letter from an old neighbour in Melbourne Street.” - Ken Rogers

BUILDING TODAY Completed in 1896,, at a cost of ÂŁ12,1261, the Library is a Grade II listed Victorian building. The building was designed by Thomas Shelmerdine and has been acknowledged as one of the earliest public libraries in Liverpool. The design is a combination of red pressed bricks, buff sandstone, plain tiled roof and decorative iron work. Its construction revolves around an unusual triangular plan with an octagonal turret to the South.
80 Rosana Doseva 2020 Portfolio
Building’s external appearance references the work of some of the best Arts and Crafts architects of the time. The building represents not only a remarkable architectural quality but also a rare union between a technical school and a library. The library has four main storeys - the principal Reading Room located on ground floor, staff accommodation on mezzanine floor, workshops situated in the basement and classrooms place on first floor. There are two entrances to the building and restricted connections within as the library and the technical school worked separately.
At the north end of the building is the General Reading- room with a double height ceiling and a barrel-vaulted glazed ceiling. The Ladies Reading Room and Lending Library is situated on the first floor mezzanine gallery with detailed iron railings and skylight ceiling. On the south end of the libray is the Boys Reading room, a double-aspect room with high ceiling. The classrooms, approached only by the main turret stair are simple rooms with great penetration of daylight. The basement workshops are also spacious rooms, with originally using tall windows and pavement lights as a daylight source.

This project revolves around the idiom ‘All mod cons’ referring to housing with all the best and most desirable features. It consists of an apartments block dedicated to elderly people, wanting to downsize and low-rent terraced houses designed for young couples and families, saving for their first home. The density will be increased by adding a six storey high apartments block, neighbouring the newly proposed terraced houses.
The scheme’s design is driven by the idea of not only creating shelter for people, but a comfortable, spacious place to live. Large private garden is dedicated to the people living in the apartments block, alongside with a communal roof top garden and playground area, providing activities and fresh air. The communal landscaped open area will be accessible by residents only, supplying them with a better security and privacy. Every apartment has designated terraced space and large windows, so people can still enjoy plenty of daylight and views. The terraced houses have large back gardens, front garage area, that could be transformed into a front
garden/patio, and open terraced spaces on the top floor. The proposal will enhance the current street-scape, by referencing the existing building materiality into a modern development. Through the use of perforated brick cladding and bronze window detailing, a modern, yet still conservative look will be achieved.

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY
The environmental strategy of the apartments proposal focuses on the provision of maximal amounts of fresh air and daylight. A private garden on ground floor has been designed for the residents, offering an area to take a walk and enjoy the weather in peace and quiet, surrounded by large trees and planting. Alongside this, there is a roof top communal garden, providing the residents with the opportunity to grow their own produce and keep busy, while again exposed to fresh air and sunlight. As an additiong to the green roof there are water collection tanks and rainwater harvesting system, used for watering plants and flushing. 100 Rosana Doseva 2020 Portfolio
Ceiling heights throughout the building reach 2.7m which allows more daylight penetrating the apartments. Each apartment has dedicated terraces facing North and East so the residents can enjoy the good weather in the comfort of their own home and connect to the cityscape. On the North side of the building, the corner is fully glazed with a full building height void, creating an inviting, well-lit entrance space and core.
In terms of ventilation, natural cross ventilation could be achieved, however a mechanical one has been chosen - MHRV. Due to the nature of the site in terms of traffic and pollution, such mechanical ventilation acts as a sound barrier offering good quality indoor air, lower carbon emissions and lack of summertime overheating within the apartments.
Main Entrance and central core positioned on the corner of the site, connecting the two residential blocks. Sound barrier from traffic noise. Higher density apartments block defining the corner, acting as prominent building.

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY Located on the corner of Smith Street and Latham Street, the apartments’ block is a representation of a contemporary development clad in perforated brick and bronzed detailing. The cross-laminated timber (CLT) superstructure is primarily left uncovered, eliminating the need for suspended ceilings and wall finishes, also allowing exposed electrical services. Every apartments has large openings and a glazed wall leading to the balcony contributing to the spacious, warm space environment. The planning strategy is based on a grid, dictated by a singular unit (1 Bed Studio), which when repeated leads to the creating of larger apartments. The module form is designed to a 3.4m x 7.2m grid, allowing each floor to stack on top of each other. The structure itself will be prefabricated off site and delivered in modules on site. The external skin is represented by a perforated brick rainscreen creating a more robust, prominent presence of the building.

INTERIOR LIGHT STUDY This interior study focuses on the communal lounge area and the living space in the apartments. It highlights the relationship between natural and artificial light as well as the connection between interior and exterior. An important aspect of the lounge space is the gradual transition from the private courtyard (South) and the space itself, to the constant relationship with the vibrant street scape (North). The apartment’s living area creates a similar atmosphere, through the use of open deck access (South) and open terraced areas (North). Full height glazing units and large windows offer maximum amount of daylight penetrating the spaces. Both areas have an open plan layout articulated by the use of diverse materials and furniture. The material palette consists primarily of various wood types, architectural bronze and white render in combinations with soft furnishing in neutral colours complimenting the soft look of the space.

SITE ANALYS Ellesmere Port Canal in Cheshire can be found on the southern shore of the Mersey estuary. The site has a 200 year old history comprising of the original Shropshire Union Canal docks, locks and buildings from the late 18th century. The site boundaries include the Manchester Ship Canal to the North East, the M53 to the South and some of the main points of interest in the area are The National Waterways Museum and Whitby Lighthouse. On visiting the site we aimed to use mental mapping as a way to record our initial thoughts on the site, highlighting landmarks, key views, and understanding the existing typology. Gordon Cullen believed that space should be experienced through a series of contrasting views, which is something which we aimed to achieve in our proposal. This led us to consider the possible ways in which we could retain the elements of enclosure identified in our mapping while removing some of the restrictions that currently divide the community. The picturesque method allowed us to map the site with the aim of identifying areas of both weakness and potential in order to create a typology that utilises key views and routes through the site.

INFRASTRUCTURE + ENVIRONMENT Road + Pedestrian Routes
Public Transport
The area has various pedestrian environments all the way throughout. Besides the footpaths adjacent to the roads, there are not many pedestrian or cycle options in the eastern area. The existing routes in the central and western parts are not much more developed either, existing mainly in the form of footpaths and roads. As an addition to this the Port Arcades zone is pedestrianized.
A convenient bus stop is situated to the south of the Port Arcades – an easily accessible central location. It runs services within the Borough to Little Sutton, Rivacre, Little Neston and Hooton as well as Liverpool, Chester, Runcorn, Mold and New Brighton.
The pedestrian activity is centralized within the pedestrianized streets as well as across Whitby Road. Apart from these areas, cars are dominating the region and have an impact on the experience of the Central Ellesmere Port zone, which leads to unpleasant pedestrian environment. Another issue relates to the level and speed of traffic on Whitby Road as well as the lack of pedestrian crossings which makes it difficult to move around the space and creates a significant barrier splitting the area. The multiple access points to the car parking area from Whitby Road also interrupt the footway and create inconveniences for the pedestrians.
126 Rosana Doseva 2020 Portfolio
Even though the location of the bus station is suitable and convenient, it is not well integrated with the other parts and uses of the area. The rail station is located off Station Road to the North West and it provides services towards Warrington and Liverpool. The state of the rail station is appalling as well as its surroundings and poor accessibility.

MASSING+ KEY VIEWS
DESIGN STRATEGY During the site visit we used the method of mental mapping, alocating where the troubled areas are, potential scenic views, key routes, car polluted zones as well as a general understanding of how public and private quarters could be rearranged. By exploring the site on foot, it became more apparent why Ellesmere Ports Canal area is struggling in economical and social terms.
were based around bringing back the interest to the site by providing attractions such as sport facilities, leisure, restaurants/bars in combination with increasing the density of the residential area and adding office spaces for potential businesses. One of the most obvious problems was the large amount of traffic around the site and within it. By highlighting this as a major inconvinience we decided to addesss it by pedestrianising the area and creating a new pedestrian and cycling path which would not only run through the docks but also expand on the other side of the canal and beyond the motorway creating a new networking system.
PEDESTRIAN + KEY VIEWS
One of the most obvious reasons was the lack of outdoor, entertainment and leisure activities alongside with the inaccessability to a lot of key areas due to their private, gated nature or due to the overpowering car parking zones. Voluntary Experience 01.07.2017-15.07.2017 Build Abroad / Singburi, Thailand

Singburi is a quiet town about two hours north of Bangkok, but still close to larger cities and cultural centers. I got the chance to share accommodation with a variety of people volunteering for different causes. My experience consisted of a week doing construction work for the locals creating timber shelters as well as processing and transporting materials. During my second week I used the opportunity to travel around the area and get an insight of Thai culture.

September 2016-September 2017 KDP Architects
Ryder Architecture is an award winning international design practice based on principles of simplicity, usefulness and elegance. The company’s portfolio is diverse and I personally got involved in Masterplanning, Infrastructure, Leisure and Residential schemes. Ryder made me feel as a part of the wider parctice through the variousCPDs, Beer Fridays and The Design Competition where I got the chance to get to know a lot of people from the other offices.
KDP Architects are a North West based Architects with an established and respected reputation throughout the industry. Practice’s work is mainly housing, residential and students’ developments across UK. I took part in developing a Golf Club Scheme including a Leisure centre and private residential odges.
