The proposed programme for this unit is to focus on a concise urban strategy for re-activating a key street. The premise is to reinvigorate Argyle Street, designing a socio-cultural building acting as a catalyst and gateway into the disused railway. The initial stimulus for this project was my interest in creating atmosphere within architecture. During this and previous research I delved into the work of Peter Zumthor whose name is synonymous with the concept of atmospheres.

I have designed my building to be as self sufficient as possible. Therefore I have included a turbine to power some if not all of the building, water and gravity to generate power as well as a natural ventilation system and a geothermal heating and cooling system. My design is a sensual experience, using wind to create sound, with the proposal of realising the concept of hearing the building before seeing it. I’d also like to use sound as a benefit to the public, to provide a warning system when wind speeds are at their highest or lowest. As well as being a laboratory my buildings will be a public space welcoming visitors and encouraging them to learn and be influenced by the science of wind and by the fact it is one of the most important renewable energy resource. The aim is also to be a fun learning activity for families. I will also be using the venturi affect to accelerate wind speeds for different situations, one being to create a series of different experiences whilst walking through the site.

Abakhan on Stafford Street was, for generations of Liverpudlians, was the go to place for all things fabric. Its heritage is now being used as a means of helping Islington to be reborn as the ‘Fabric District’. Fabric has been a pivotal part of the district’s socio-economic history. As such, I have incorporated it into my design development. Using illustrations of woven fabrics, I have tried to design the site layout with this in mind. I allocated separate spaces for animals, a cafe, an entrance, and an educational room. All animal enclosures are located on the sides for the main reason of being an important attraction. As people and children walk by my city farm they will be able to look through small gaps between the timber frame structure, hopefully, luring them in further. Having this will hopefully increase the footfall and thus help the community business. By positioning the animal enclosures to the sides also creates a courtyard. The Educational Room, cafe and entrance will all have a timber frame structure, similar to the Waterloo City Farm. All of these outbuildings have the same dimensions, therefore the timber frames can be easily taken apart and rebuilt in a new site and also in different combinations.

Sensory Gardens
Our first concept was to reinvigorate the Fabric District with minimal disruption. We wanted to re-use as many buildings as we could to keep the theme of pragmatic development. We added pocket gardens all throughout the site making sure everyone was within eyesight of each other. We designed gardens, a contemplation zone, an indoor garden, allotments, and the central hub. In order for every site to be accessible we pedestrianized the whole district, allowing visitors to move freely in and out of each destination. I developed and expanded my own design. The space was originally a car park, as a group, we turned it into the Fabric’s central hub and I further developed this concept by providing a place for escape and enjoyment. I have added an auditorium as a form of entertainment, with an accessible area for people to contemplate and relax. The sensory gardens will provide stimuli for all the senses, taste, sight, smell and touch.
