About me Currently done with my third year of my architecture degree (RIBA Part 1). Having done my first year in Sri Lanka (at the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology) and my second and third year in the UK (at The Liverpool School of Art and Design) I come from two very different backgrounds and have a multi-cultural view of architecture. When designing, I try to produce something that has been influenced from my time spent in Asia, as well as the West. ii

The task was to design and create a dual space which consists of an art gallery and an accommodation space for the artists to live in. The design has to accommodate 12 international artists and 4 translators or facilitators. The artists and translators would come and go in two-year cycles. The accommodation segment of the building has to cater to both the artists and their families, should they wish to bring them along. The space consists of 2 bedroom apartments and studio apartments. The art gallery space is to consist of permanent and temporary exhibition spaces. The permanent exhibition space would host the artist’s past work, while the temporary space would consist of their ongoing work. The other necessary elements needed for the building are an auditorium for bidding of art, an event or entertainment space, studio or workshop space, and a restaurant or café. The site is located in Liverpool (coordinates; 53.39745, -2.98127) close to the Mersey River. It is a triangular land that lies between Jamaica Street and St James Street.Parking spaces were not included in the design as there were several slots available within walking distance to the site.

The diagrams below show the plans, volumetric drawings and a concept model drawn on sketchup showing the exterior of the building. The concept of this design was tranquility. It was chosen since it seemed like a neutral enviroment for all the different artists of different countries, and clash of cultures. It was also supposed to help the artists produce good work in a tranquil enviroment. Outdoor exhibition spaces, the play of light and shadows, an atrium to bring in light and a water garden were added to induce tranquility. The water garden was inspired by Tadao Ando’s Hill of the Buddha, where he makes all the visitors walk around a water garden before entering the temple.

The task for this project was to design a weather station located at the Festival Gardens in Liverpool overlooking the Mersey River. The design had to have a laboratory/ research center, an auditorium for lectures and presentations, a library and an exhibition space with information for outsiders on weather, and a café for people passing by. This design was accomplished by experimenting with four sided non-perpendicular shapes for the buildings, and triangular elements as open spaces. Most of the outer walls are parallel to each other or follow the same guideline.

The sheet below shows the ground floor plan, first floor plan, roof plan and key sections and elevations. It also has an abstract drawing of the layout as well as a sun path diagram and shadow diagram during the summer and winter solstice.

This was the final project of the second year, known as the Experimental Project, where the function of the building and its location was a choice of our own. The selected theme was a boutique hotel, located in Sri Lanka along the coast of the Arugam Bay Beach. The Arugam Bay Beach is a well known spot for surfing and the occupants of the hotel were to be surfers (both locals and foreigners). Precedent studies were done on authentic Sri Lankan buildings, most of which were designed by Geoffrey Bawa. The hotel is composed of a main building with a reception area, hotel lobby, dining area, bar, kitchen, office space, pool and 6 cabins/ chalets. The chalets designed to be constructed on stilts to minimize the damage done to the environment and this would also make it economically sustainable as well. The chalets were arranged in such a manner that they would all have a view of the ocean.

WHEN LOOKING AT AN ARIEL VIEW OF THE FABRIC CITY DISTRICT, IT’S QUITE OBVIOUS THAT THE AREA LACKS IN GREENERY AND SOCIAL SPACES. THIS URBAN SQUARE WILL GIVE THE PUBLIC BOTH. IT WILL BE ABLE TO FUNNEL THE PEOPLE THROUGH AND HELP BRING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER. ONE COULD SIMPLY JUST PASS TIME BY STOPPING FOR SOME COFFEE, OR TO READ, OR EVEN SCROLL THROUGH YOUR PHONE. THE WATER FEATURE WILL BE CONVERTED TO A SKATING RINK DURING AUTUMN AND WINTER SO THAT THE SQUARE IS NOT LEFT UNUSED DURING THE COLDER SEASONS OF THE YEAR.

main site: fabric city district

UAL DETAILED SPATIAL DESIGN

The Urban Design Project involved each student coming up with an urban strategy for a small section of the Fabric City District in Liverpool. The section selected was re-done into a public square which was surrounded by 2 student accommodation buildings and one listed building of historic value (Prince of Wales Public House). A public square seemed appropriate for such an environment, since it would not only provide a social space, but was also next to a bus stop which meant that people would pass through the square to and from work/ school. The components of the square included an outdoor area for people to relax and socialize (mainly directed towards the students from the accommodation centers), a café with indoor and outdoor seating areas, a green space since the Fabric City District barely had any greenery in it, and a water feature that could be frozen over the winter to form a skating rink. This would ensure that the square would remain occupied during all times of the year.

The drawings below show 3 sections of the square and some images of the physical model that was made.
