About me page I am an adventurous young architect to be, who embraces the challenge. Often my design ideas appear unconventional and a little bit out of the ordinary although, I feel they are a reflection of my personality. Conformity is what makes me uncomfortable, and at the beginning of each project I have a large appetite for wanting to learn and develop my software/ drawing skills. Often I choose the challenge over the more rational design, as I am forced to go above and beyond to realise my design intentions.

Previously observing grid shell structures, I applied my research to my understanding of grid shell structures in order to inspire the form and structure of my design.

The facility will house a subtropical environment in which indigenous species of plants and insects from warmer climates can be studied in order to potentially emulate the climate responsiveness of these species, and apply the found knowledge into potential human applications.

The Symbiosis Centre is a research facility for better understanding the implications caused by climate change towards species of flora and fauna globally, and how they react towards climate volatility.

Spatial

Design The structure uses a sorts of passive design to regulate the internal temperatures. A large span of mostly south facing glazing heats the internal air temperature to which it is alleviated through the hyperbolic voids intentionally left open. The cool Mersey breeze travels upward through the structure and around the gap of the self standing threshold forcing the charged warmer air up and out through the hyperbolic voids.

The alternating hexagonal facade represent chemistry through how it requires a chemical reaction to UV light in order to change colour.

Through producing this work I was able to determine features key to this site, for example understanding the facade style of Bold street and where different generations of build style had been historically implemented. It was also important to understand the ground conditions such as whether the chosen site includes a significant gradient change and how this may later affect the design.

The larger hexagons forming the shape of the building represent the biological aspects of science in how they are similar to a single cell multiplying through mitosis to produce multiple daughter cells. Physics is manifested through representation in how the buildings floating auditorium appears self sustaining.

The site is built up of modular hexagonal cells varying in shape and size, to form the key spaces of a functional theatre. The mass is positioned in such a way to ensure where the UV exposure from the sun is most prevalent, the reactive facade is the focal point.

The chosen site location is on Ropewalks square, Bold street, Liverpool. The surrounding area consists of mostly 19th and 20th century terraces which have been slightly adapted and modified to suit the function of a contemporary British high-street.

When choosing the area for my individual study, I selected a space where I could use the existing massing to the benefit of my design. The selected area already has an existing boundary in place, as I aimed to design a sorts of public square. The surrounding buildings are also significant as they act as a wind barrier which is necessary in order for the square to function accordingly such as on market days.

The skylight I have implemented was a pivotal feature within the design of the building. It has also developed and changed over time with each updated version of the complex. It will first layer with a glazed plain of filmed glass and then a secondary layer of sticks and branches. The purpose of the shape and design of this skylight is so that the branches are in place in hope that birds will nest in-between them and while standing in the craft space the birds and nests above can be viewed from underneath. I settled on this shape as it represents a branch and each level could potentially home a different type of nest.
