Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon Precedent

Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon is a £1.3 billion development. Situated on the coast of Swansea, this tidal lagoon boast the ability to power 155 thousand homes for up to 120 years. The lagoon harness the energy from the moon through the change in height in the tide (4m) throughout the course of the day. The water passes through turbines located along the wall generating the energy. The project is a 9.5km breakwater wall and proposes to create 2232 construction andmanufacturing jobs which will be directly sustained by the build supporting thousands of further jobs in the wider Welsh/UK economy. The lagoon is estimated to contribute £316million in gross added value to the Welsh economy during construction and a further £76 million each year of its 120 year life span. This project is deemed a small scale project and can be seen as an innovator for future larger scale tidal energy lagoons to be built around the world. Relevance - The lagoon has an identical function to our proposal and will require similar maintenance and research facilities to maintain the lagoon. iv

Centre of Water and Ice Sports Precedent

In OLsztyn, Poland is the Centre of Water and Ice Sports, designed by Restudio in 2015, this centre has a gross floor area of 3100m2. This design provides a more accessible opportunity for watersport activities, due to the fact this is harbour is deemed a public space rather than a closed off marina, this allows for cyclists and pedestrians to pass through the site freely. The programme includes watersport facilities, marina, gastronomy, wellness, conference and training spaces, all located around the 100m long pier. Relevance - This Watersports centre is relevant to the thesis in the sense of its programme and what it does for watersports, however it doesnt provide the mixed facilities by incorporating marina managment or and research centres. It is also good to look at a sense of scale that will be needed for the watersports area.

The Site

This Location is deemed a focal point of the site, it is where the tidal lagoon wall connects to the land, alongside the lock for Brunswick dock, with good connection links both east and west of the site. This site will require a statement building to attract visitors to use the site

Site Design Concept

Excavation Area

Proposed Separation to put in place the new lock inn order to create and island attached the end of the lagoon wall.

The proposal to separate the two sides of the site by excavation the reclaimed land and reinstating the lock that was once there, this allows for there to be a public and private aspect to the design, ideally the part of the site that connects to the Lagoon wall will be public with the site connected to the land being the private aspect to the site

Site Analysis

Key Views - as seen I have highlighted three key views, out to the Lagoon, out towards the Wirral and towards the marina, these are the key views that I would like to incorporate into the design

Site

Key Views

Green Space - On the site currently there is an abandoned patch of land that could be classed as a green space albeit undesirable, there are also small patches of grass near by in the residential part towards the city centre. Landmarks - The site is situated on the docks and further along the water is the Albert dock landmark, but near the site are the existing dock buildings, which, as part of out master plan we intend to keep and improve the state of them.

Site Analysis

Roof Scape - Around the site, there are 3/4 storey apartments and town houses towards the city, and the 2 storey dock buildings going out of the city, I feel a building of around 2 - 4 storeys would be suitable with the potential for a tower like structure over looking the whole marina and lagoon.

Site

Roof scape

Routes - The main routes to the site are, by foot from the tidal lagoon wall ( not shown inn drawings) and from the dock front walk. Access by car from the east and the north. Connections - I ant to create tow crossing points on the new lock, to mirror that of the current existing lock, there needs to be a clear connection to the lagoon wall and there must be connection to the existing site surround for service vehicles.

Public Realm Strategy

Private Public I have started to sketch over a site plan my initial ideas for the public realm, I started to look at what I want public and what I want private, from here I have made rough proposals as to what each area will consist of, the private are will be prominently hardcore due to having the dry dock on the east side of the site. The lagoon approach will be hardcore with inserts of feature seating, shelter and greenery. I have proposed a soft play/ park area to the south as you approach from the warehouses, this is because from our master plan we intended to open these up to the hospitality industry and encourage more people to visit the area, so a small playground in a little park would be nice for people to interact with the site and act as a barrier to the car par. I am still yet to suggest any placement of trees.

My building is isolated to an island with the introduction of the new lock to the eastern side of the building, there is also few buildings within close proximity, because of this the building is exposed to sunlight all throughout the day, even late into the winter months. One potential issue could be light pollution, because my building is large with big open spaces I have had to add extra mechanical lighting to light the spaces. This could lead to some light pollution surrounding the scheme Approach from North at night

Housing Project NTS

Situated on Everton brow, this site takes advantage of the views over Liverpool city, the river Mersey and beyond. In order to benefit from these whilst situated on a steep gradient site, the scheme is tiered, this allows each block to get views over the city, these blocks are made up of modular components that are precision built off-site, delivered to site and connected together. This method allows for minimal disruption to the site and the surrounding area. As the blocks go up with each level, the facade steps in, creating external terrace spaces for residents, this also allows for a softer facade. The scheme is based around the idea of providing a nice area for a community to grow. Social interaction with neighbours and residents is encouraged through multiple ways, community gardens, park, terraces that allow for interaction with neighbours. There are no cars aloud on the site, reducing the pollution of the micro climate and allowing for a safe place for children to play.

Site Plan NTS

The design incorporates a series of landscape community features, for example plazas with seating, small water features and paddling pond, play hills, sunken sand pits, social steps. these features help to increase social interaction with neighbours and other members of the community. along with this is balconies that promote interaction by having some form of visual connection to another. these balconies are also large enough to potentially have small planting and other greenery.

Environmental Strategy NTS

In Liverpool, Everton, one main issue is the climate, due to its location on the west coast, it is subject to strong north westerly prevailing winds and lots of damp weather, this scheme has taken this into consideration. The blocks are situated so that the communal areas are protected from the strong winds, this is also assisted by existing trees and new planted trees, acting as a muffle to combat the wind. The site, located on a steep hill has ample access to sunlight, so option for solar shading on the apartments along with deciduous trees means that in the summer months the buildings will stay cool, then when the low sun hits in the winter months, tenants can benefit from solar gains to help reduce heating costs. ground sourced heat pumps provided recycled water heating for radiators. Underground rainwater collection can be used for any potable water within the complex. Certain apartments are provided with terraces which act as nice external spaces, especially in the evening when you can watch the sun set over the water. those apartments that don’t have terraces can use the communal garden spaces for planting fruit and vegetables or as a nice gathering spot.

Ghent Group Masterplan NTS

MASTERPLAN 1:500

Ghent, located in the north of Belgium is one of the oldest cities in the country. Although being old, the city centre still remains a small enough to be cosy, but big enough to be a vibrant, relevant centre for trade and culture. The city is compiled of a combination of Classical and Medieval Architecture. This is then contrasted with large post-industrial areas that are currently undergoing urban re-newel. Although being an old and beautiful city , Ghent isn’t a tourist hotspot within Belgium, especially when compared to cities such as Bruges and Brussels. Instead, the city thrives on a large population of youth and students of the local Colleges and Universities. Ghent is an old port city, still in use today, it has a strong canal system running through the cities routes. The port is the third largest port in Belgium that is still active today. This port houses some large companies such as Volvo cars, Volvo trucks, Volvo parts, Honda and other large global companies. Ghent is well known for its large public squares and marketplaces, one of the main ones of these is Vrijdagmarkt, which translates to ‘Friday Market’, this was the centre for life and culture during medieval times. lxxviii
