URBAN DESIGN PROJECT: RESTITCH, RECONNECT & REIMAGINE BIRKENHEAD The location for this project was Birkenhead, Wirral. The overarching aim for the scheme was to propose a Masterplan that would help rejuvenate the town of Birkenhead. Our research found that the Wirral was home to a number of walkers and cyclists due to its beautiful coastline scenery and thought that we should aim to try and link Birkenhead back into the sceneic routes. We identified that Birkenhead sits on an old grid pattern layout originally designed by James Gillespie Graham, however through various economic downfalls this unique grid layout was becoming lost. Our intention was to restitch this grid and utilise an old railway line connecting the town centre to the new Wirral Waters Dock developements. We proposed that this line becomes a new pedestrain corridor linking the town centre to the Wirral waters development and thus also connecting cyclists and walkers to the sceneic coastlines and views over to liverpool. In order to keep the project sustainable we decided that as part of our concept the whole scheme would aim to be carbon neutral and would provide Birkenhead with the means to create and consume its own energy rather than being reliant on extenral sources as it currently does. All this led us to the key conceptual drivers of the project which we decided would be three main topics. These are Restitch (restitching the grid), Reconnect (connecting cyclists and walkers to the sceneic routes) and Reimagine (Taking Birkenhead and making it a Carbon Neutral and sustainable place to live).

The Final Matserplan was broken up into three sections : We introduced a new residential scheme at the south of the site. This area would have direct access to the pedestrian corridor that runs through the middle of the site. At the heart of the scheme a new Central Buisness district would provide an updated market space alongside a new conway park train station and commercial offices. Towards the north of the scheme a new residential block would be introduced to sandwich the new CBD all while connecting to Birkenheads existing landmarks and green spaces such as Hamilton Square, Wirral Waters and Birkenhead Park. 2020 Portfolio Lewis Joinson

THESIS PROJECT : THE NEIGHBOURHOOD ART COLLEGE PROJECT
The ambition of the Thesis project was to rethink teaching and architecture mght be utilised to do that. With the Neighbourhood college project the overarching concept was to provide a college style facility that allowed the interactions between both students and local residents in the area. It was designed as a college style centre for both students to learn new skills and find their own paths while also providing opportunities to people in the local area to pursue a path that they may not have had the opportunity to pursue in the past. The project brought a collegiate style environment without a person feeling out of place or uncomfortable. The project took a new outlook on how we teach students (or adults) allowing them to learn for themselves in a student-centric style learning approach. The college building provides a multitude of subjects that can be taught and learnt with a primary focus on the arts and crafts subjects, as these allow pupils to be the most expressive and all for exibhitions of physical items to be celebrated. The colleges plan is inspired by Louis Kahn’s Dominican Motherhouse and the project explored Kahn’s uses of space wthin courtyards. The centre also provides three key spaces which are : The canteen space, The Auditorium and the Event space each of which would be public facilites and are designed to celebrate a variety of occasions within the colligate style environment.

VISUAL ARTS
TECTONIC
CRAFTING ARTS
STEREOTOMIC
The final design of the scheme took a form follows function style approach to the architecture. Th building was separated into two levels with the architecture of each of the levels being determined by its function. The diagram above highlights how the the heavy machinery based Crafting Arts subjects were situated on the ground floor. This was done to give the building the illusion of a heavy base. The architecture of these spaces would also reflect the function by having a heavy look utilising masonry cladding pannels to give the ground floor a very Stereotomic feel. To retain sustainabilty the walls on this floor where constructed from CLT and featured a drag faced brick cladding to give the illusion that the building is constructed from brick. On the second floor, where the visual arts were based a tectonic style of architecture was chosen to give the spaces a light feel. The second floor took inspiration from the Letterfrack GMIT building and utlised a similar structural system in order to a achieve large, light spaces.

The final plans are arranged in a cloister and are designed so that the building is only accessable from on entrance on the exterior. Occupants must travel inside the cloister to access the teaching spaces. This was done to create a hard outer shell and a softer inner cloister. This alludes to a sense of welcoming and warmth as occupants travel into the cloister. The materiality inside the cloister is all richer in colour to elevate this effect. A residential space is attached onto the main teaching spaces with the event space occupying the heart of this space.

THESIS PROJECT : THE NEIGHBOURHOOD ART CO L L E G E P ROJ E C T -T H E EVENT SPACE
Inspired by Trinity College Dublin the event space is designed to celerbate academic achievements. The space features a unique shutter system which allows the space to be either opened up for performance based events such as dance or music or closed off for exhibition style events such as art exhibtions or 3-d galleries. The Bleacher seating system allows for the seating to tucked away or protrude into the space when events are being held. The space utilisies large parallel chord trusses that span 25m across the space. These trusses are supported by large 400mm columns and are used to hang lighting and sound equipment.

THESIS PROJECT : THE NEIGHBOURHOOD ART COLLEGE PROJECT -T H E AUDI TO R I UM SPACE
The Auditorium space sits at the heart of the scheme and is the only building that is rotated off grid. This was done partly to maximise natural light penetration into the space but also to celebrate the space and its function. The auditorium space allows for an occupancy of around 100 people and is designed as a space where public speakers or guest speakers would go to talk to residents or students. Its positioning at the heart of the scheme has been done so that it becomes a celebrated space and one used for graduation or celebratory ceremonies. Occupants are able to spill out into the surrounding green spaces or use the lift to access the roof terrace space post events.

THESIS PROJECT : THE NEIGHBOURHOOD ART COLLEGE P ROJ E C T -T H E CANTEEN SPACE Like many traditional colleges the act of dining is often a celebrated event and so the architecture of these spaces in colligate style facilities is often also celebrated. In this project the canteen space took inspiration from the Brockholes Vistior centre construction in order to achieve a large trapezoidal prism shape that spans a large canteen space. The external finish of this is brick and oak shingles. The drag-faced brick effect is acheived using a cladding technique over the CLT wall structure keeping the building environmentally positive. When the space is not being used as a canteen. Market stalls and other activites available to the public are able to take place in this space.

URBAN DESIGN PROJECT: MINGLE DINGLE The location of this scheme sat just outside of Liverpool city centre. It was found that the Site, Dingle, had a lack of an Urban Centre where people could congrigate and interact. The site is largely residential, however, due to the topography of the site, residents are disconnected and isolated from each other forming a series of pocket communities across the Site. Many open parts of the site provide views across the River Mersey and beyond. The scheme focus’ on the reunification of the small pocket communities in the area of Dingle. Building on initial research we identified a lack of public services and places for communal interaction. Drawing from the analysis we concluded the area suffers heavily from anti-social behaviour and discourages community engagement within key parts of the site. This with the combined lack of public forums and community-led spaces has created a disconnect between its residents and the

surrounding area. Our scheme provided the facilities needed to catalyse public engagement helping to restore the fragmented communities and tackle the socioeconomic problems within the area. A community hub was introduced for wider engagement and to provide space for social gatherings and interactions by
incorporating

space.
The introduction of the market space saw these spaces interacting and linking to each other via a pedestrianised road. The main idea behind the scheme was that residents could use the verticsal farm faciltiy at the lower end of the site to produce goods for the market at the top end. This would draw in customers and thus new communities to the area. a new housing development adjacent to the market was aimed at new buyers and its incentive was to attract new communities without replacing the old ones.

MIXED STRUCTURE
Located in within the new Urban Centre of Dingle from the Urban Design Project, this project looks at the scheme along Harlow street at the adjacent market space, defining the redensification, urban landscape and building typology. The project focuses on defining what a market space is and how they fit into a contemporary urban development scheme. Its aim is to be a permeable space that feeds into the adjacent pedestrianised road yet also provides a new distinguishable square space. The project provided 3 new distinct market space typologies that each provide a unique outlook into what defines a market place environment. The introduction of the new square at the heart of the scheme sought to make the area distinguishable yet also adaptable offering a mixed-use space that would host a multitude of events but more significantly offering a space that will catatlyse the intoduction of small pop-up markets on a non-event basis.

THE OLD MILL SITE : “YOUR SPACE, MY SPACE, OUR SPACE” - HOUSING PROJECT
Set in the heart of Dingle, Liverpool this project (Your Space, My Space, Our Space) works in collaboration with the Urban design project to create a new residential estate that feeds into the newly provided Market Hall and Pedestrianised road. One of the main ambitions for this new housing scheme was that it was meant to environmentally sustainable from the onset. Heavily pedestrianised roads litter the scheme and cars are forced away to main roads leading to the city. Parking is transferred beneath the site, so cars are able to disappear, and a pedestrian and cyclists focused scheme emerges. The houses themselves are also sustainable opting for environmentally friendly materials and aiming to reduce the embodied energy that goes into the construction process. 19

MY
SPACE,
In response to the context of the local environment the houses on site do not exceed 3-bedrooms and the site is broken up into three different Housing typologies, each of which have their own unique style and design. The houses are designed to range in value from high end cliff-face homes to smaller one-bedroom apartments. One of the key concepts to the scheme was the idea of getting the community to mingle and interact more, developing friendly relationships with each other to create a new close-knit community. This is achieved on site with the provision of new public orientated outdoor spaces such as the Courtyard. This is a space that aims to connect residents but can also be used as an area to relax or walk with an abundance of trees and plants. The strong connectivity of the scheme to the new market space, and with links to the city centre close by, residents are offered a new type of experience in housing that is similar to a “Fifteen-minute city” in that everything a resident would need is within a fifteen-minute commute from there home.

THE OLD MILL SITE : “ YOUR S PAC E , M Y S PAC E , OUR S PAC E ” - HOUSING PROJECT
In line with the new market and public domain spaces, the project provideed a dynamic range of uniquely designed Housing typologies for the local community and they sought to attract new and first time buyers to the local area . The scheme incorporated 32 new two and three bedroom houses that overlook the welsh coast as well as incorporating 92 new apartment spaces. At the centre of this new apartment complex was a new courtyard space, available to the public and allowing residents to mingle and interact whilst also having direct access to the market space. The design centres around a pedestrian and cyclist orientated environment and the elimnation of cars in the heart of the scheme allowed it to coincide with the new pedestrianised road that runs adjacent to it.

CR EM ETO RIUM MO DEL This Project took an existing park and sought to transform it into a new cats and Dogs home. Located in Wavertree Botanical gardens, Liverpool, the main concept of the scheme was to provide a building and landscape that attached onto the botanical gardens. This was done so that people looking to adopt a dog could walk them in and around the site and ultimately through the existing botanical Gardens. One of the Concepts for the design and typology of the Plan was for the buildings to tell the story of what happens to adopted dogs from the day they arrive to the day they leave or are put down.

The brief for this project was to design a Dance studio/ performance space. The site was a initially a sunken carpark which i opted to retain and use as an underground car park for my scheme. building ontop of it to maximise sunlight penetration. The façade intergrated copper cladding panels, the shape of which were influnced by particular dance positions. This created a flow of dance moves across the façade and aimed to give the building a more free-flowing look from the exterior. The building with the cladding panels was to be instantly recognisable
