Alzheimer’s Care Centre
Glasgow Barras
Glasgow’s Alzheimer’s care centre aims to provide permanent residence and help for those affected by the disease. The scheme will provide daily activities for the residents to engage with, family support, counselling, on site health monitoring and a safe environment.
Thesis Design The existing site is a car park with tarmac and ground soil surface. The car park is reasonably flat with a slope in the middle, dropping to towards the west. The surrounding context is mixed use. Accommodation and large warehouse are located to the south and west. East side is largely a car park for a local Morrisons. North of the site is occupied by a homeless health centre and large Greenland beyond the disused railway. This green land is currently a part of the urban design project transforming it into a sports centre. Two main entrances to the site are two streets joining into Bell Street.

Architectural Exploration
Concept
As decades of research to fight the disease go by. Proven methods to slow down the negative process of Alzhemier’s is by treating it with various medical prescriptions. Another method of tackling the disease is to simply live a healthier lifestyle.
The Concept is to provide a safe environment for the patients by introducing vast gardens, daily activities to engage with while being monitored and taken care of.
The Architectural Design of the project will include many types of Activities to help stimulate the individuals mind. To essentially help them to remember tasks they used to engage with.
Different types of activities will be present through out the design to help and engage the cognitive mind of the patient such as; Tendering to Gardens, Walks and Engaging with Primary School Children.
The town concept introduces elevation design of the building based on Glasgow’s architecture. This is to remind the patients of their old past and create a non-confusing environment.
Further Activities to help remind the patient of their past and help them to engage is to set up Grocery Stores, Painting Classes and Allotments.

Design Exploration
Concept
The Spine Framework showcases a clear linear North to South trail with the various spaces and activities visitors would be able to experience along the trail.
The Barrowland Spine aims to create a more cohesive Barras experience by connecting fragments and harnessing vacant areas to introduce activities that interrelate and embrace the creative direction which the region is heading towards.
The concentration of activities within the Barras area corresponds with the strategy to culturally regenerate the Barras and make it a diverse and vibrant public hub.

Courtyard Family Homes
Dingle
Situated in Dingle, this housing scheme aims to provide social homes ranging from 3 to 4 bedrooms for young families coming from the area. Each terrace house will include an inner courtyard, garden farm and a quiet study space.
Housing Project Dingle, situated in the Riverside District is one of the most deprived areas in Liverpool. 28.6% of children in the Riverside district are in low income households. The site itself is located at the corner of Harlow and Toxteth Street inside the large green disused area.

Design The previous urban design project aims to celebrate the relationship between the food and the city through low cost intervention along Mill Street, splitting it into 3 zones; Growing, Cooking & Eating. The current project is located within the Growing zone of the site. As Riverside is one of the most deprived areas in Liverpool, families may struggle to provide sufficient meals through out the day. The housing scheme is located within the Growing Zone and each home will have a small farm to grow fresh vegetables.

This project aims to use natural daylight and captured rainwater as a primary source of energy and grey water use. The orientation of the units allows to capture sunlight throughout the day with the use of solar panels and south facing windows for passive heating. The internal courtyard of each unit allows for sunlight to enter spaces that are unable to have windows or openings because of its terraced row blocks.
Each unit allows for front and back gardens. The north garden can be used for growing fresh food while the south garden will shield the unit from the traffic noise by the use of vegetation. Each unit type has been designed through the Passivhaus scheme to reduce fuel costs all year round. With the addition of using renewable energy sources the project aims to be a low carbon development.

Each Home uses water collected though the rain harvesting system. 39.46% of harvested rainfall will contribute to grey water usage. Each unit is also equipped with PV and SWH solar panels for home and water heating.

Dingle Group Urban Design Project Recognising Park Hill as Liverpool’s first public allotment since WW2, Urban Farming District aims to celebrate the relationship between city and food. Injecting a series of green low cost, low energy interventions along Mill Street Urban Farming District will build upon this existing network. Green interventions will create jobs through growing, cooking and eating of fruit and vegetables, feeding local businesses, and creating a circular economy.

Design Where built form is introduced, modular units will be fabricated locally within existing industrial buildings onsite creating jobs for locals, strengthening Dingle’s workforce. Traffic has been limited to one way throughout Mill Street to calm the roads, making way for pedestrians and cyclists. The existing cycle route from Otterspool to Liverpool City Centre has been celebrated, encouraging locals to cycle as their daily commute. On weekends, traffic will be redirected away, leaving Mill Street free for a farmer’s market, promoting the consumption of locally sourced food.

Frohlich Archive
Mason Street
This scheme has been designed to archive Fanchon Frohlich’s abstract work and various other artist’s paintings.
Comprehensive Design Project Mason Street, located in Edge Hill, is the old home to Joseph Williamson and a vast network of tunnels running underneath the site. The site itself is located in the new Paddington village while Mason Street is the east boundary line for the development.

Concept
A vast network of tunnels was created in the 1800’s in Edge Hill by Joseph Williamson. Some parts of the tunnel are still undiscovered but a large portion has been located beneath the site and his former home.
The Concept is to use natural daylight as the main lighting strategy for the galleries and the archive.

The Frohlich Archive uses the old facade as an entrance to the building. The Courtyard after, allows visitors to enter the tunnels via existing stairs on site. From the courtyard visitors can go into the reception/ information point. The reception allows visitors to go into the garden and access one of the gallery towers. The hallway allows visitors to access the gallery spaces, archive and a reading room with a tower viewing over Liverpool.
