About Me
I have recently completed my BA in Architecture at John Moores University. An aspect of architecture and the design process that I have come to treasure immensely is the studio environment, and the sociability and interactivity that comes with design. I am fortunate to have visited many wonderful cities that have informed and inspired much of my approach to architecture. I am particularly interested in how each and every building has its own unique connection to its wider environment, both physically and socially, and on which elements of the experience and composition of the building stay with the visitor long after they have left. My interests lie most specifically in social and community project based architecture, as I believe all architecture can be a tool in connecting communities and serving its users, far beyond being just a space for a specific programme.

Art can be used as a tool to celebrate culture and bring communities together, as well as encouraging individuals to be creative. Our new-found approach to the creative process is a huge indicator of how public perception and consumption has changed. Art is physically more available than ever, but the change in the way we perceive it is the most radical transformation that has happened, the de-museumification of art has happened through making art seem relatable and approachable to the public. This has been realised through ‘user-led’ gallery spaces. The rise in popularity of community based projects and other interactive art schemes , and the rising understanding that the creative process is immeasurably valuable. Looking to the future, creating a way of combining both a successful gallery typology with an artistic focus on the whole creative journey could be the most successful way to increase consumption and perception of art even further, and reiterate to the public that art is a tool for everyone.

thematic idea
The two most important factors of my design, as influenced by my 6111AR CDP research essay and my site analysis, have determined my concept. I have found these factors to be movement through the site (maximising engagement by creating a captivating journey through the building, where the viewer can relate to the artistic process) and the orientation and importance of northlight (creating a conducive environment for perceiving and creating art).
The journey through the site and the separation in typology of the site based on whether the area is in receipt of north or south light has created a basis for which design can start. With regard to the wider context of Liverpool, this new gallery can combine a range of typologies to create an innovative, ‘user-led’ gallery space. Unlike the other galleries around the baltic area, the scale of my site means there is more freedom and flexibility in terms of movement. This means the traditional boundaries and ‘stuffiness’ associated with gallery spaces are reduced, and also this gallery might create more attraction.

The map to the left shows where the visualisations are taken from the overall site. The first 4 images follow the initial ‘User Journey’ as shown by the line through the plan. As previously disclosed, this is one of the fundamental concepts of the gallery - the user is taken on a journey where they experience the whole artistic journey by seeing the artists at work in the stusio and workshop spaces before finally arriving in the circulation space, which is interlocking with the exhibition hall. The user can decide to either enter through this space and exit into a small garden and further sculpture space, or ascend up the gallery into the smaller, more intimate gallery space. Dynamic lighting is the other key influence of the overall design and conceptualising of the project. The scale and orientation of the project means that outside there are areas of direct sunlight and shade. The exhibition hall receives changing light dependant on weather and time of year which contributes to the ‘living’ effect of the gallery, whereas the other gallery spaces and studio are in receipt of more consistent lighting.

Festival Garden Community Pavilion - A place that demonstrates the process of extracting and utilising methane energy to encourage environmental awareness and learning, as well as revitalising the Festival Gardens and encouraging footfall to this area by showcasing the amazing view of the River Mersey. The site I used had multiple existing buildings as it was used for methane collection in the past, as well as a water cleaning facility. I used three existing buildings to inform the rest of my design.
Starting by drawing basic plans and sections to understand the relationship of the landscape to the existing buildings, I then used these to create a basic gridding system, as a basis for the development of the project. Some aspects I looked at through sketch were mass and void, new and old, and indoors and outdoors. I also lookes at which points were in receipt of the most sunlight and whuch places would provide the best view of the surroundings.

A ‘grid’ system has been realised through these sketches. This seemed like the most natural approach to the project, as sustainability is one of the core values of the brief. By gridding the site, existing walls are used to maximise their potential, and thus reduce the need for an entirely new structure. Looking at the typology of the site made it clear that linear approach to the site using planar elements would work most effectively on this site.

Structurally, this project could be broken into 3 key areas: the existing brick buildings, the glazed section that wraps arounf the facade and becomes the flexible courtyard, and the cast concrete sturucture that becomes the space for the main programme of the building. The exploded axonometric to the left helps to represent this. The biggest challenge in terms of the environmental and tectonic design for this scheme was configuring the heating and ventilation strategy. The combination of a glazed ‘green-house’ areas with dense concrete walls seemed like trombe walling was a solution to heating the building. Also, after understanding the abundance of methane energy on the site, heating could also be done mechanically by a readily available renewable energy source, but trombe walling would help reduce this demand.

Urban Design Origination - The Harbour 5123AR My proposal for this project was to create a space that can provide security for people who need it, and a hub to help, inspire and motivate the wider community. By using a disused building I reduced the footprint of the project and giging a derelict building a new purpose. Inside the existing building, a series of prefabricated, modular unitts will be placed. The ground floor will have a kitvhen, social space and bathroom. The flexibility will hopefully show that this design is suitable for multiple sites and locations .

The site is on a busy road- Duke Street. The area recieves high footfall and plenty of traffic. The site is approximately 300 yards from Liverpool one, and is an area full of restarants and bars. This might mean that homelss people gracitate to this area as there is a higher level of visibility at night. Also, Liverpool’s China Town is approximately 500 yards away, and this is a community that would definitely benefit from increased attention in the area. The terraced housing on Duke Street is mostly derelict, meaning there could be an opportunity for my project to expand into these houses as and when needed. The car park adjacent to the derelict house recieves a lot of light in the summer months, but due to the orientation of the house receives little to no light.

Creating a pod - I needed to create small, private spaces for those in need of a place to stay could have one with ease, privacy and security. This needed to be lightweight, easily constructed and fabricated in a way that did not need lots of intricate parts, e.g could be reproduced easily. This page shows my concept work behind the pod. These can be put into derelict buildings for complete shelter

The natural approach to the outside space appeared to be creating a grid system. The purpose of this space was to create a flexible centre that could give people the opportunity to take workshops, recieve vital health through classes and appointments, and to facilitate other community projects. In terms of structure, it should follow the same kind of building protocols as the indoor pods. This means prefab, modular architecture that can be built quickly and effectively.

Creating an open community space: scale 1:200
The purpose of the enclosed space is to hold a configuration of smaller spaces inside. This space is meant to help the community with issues such as health, education and other services as the private, enclosed space will host lessons, meetings, workshops and other ways of help. The purpose of the open space is to create a sheltered, outdoor area where the community can host projects that are more interactive with the public, this could be in the format of art intallations, preformances, markets or anything sociable. It is important to note that the materiality of each of the panels can vary depending on the desired outcome, as shown in the modelsto the right.
