Despite completing my MA I am currently seeking a Part 1 experience with your pratice.

GALLOWGATE INTERCHANGE Thesis Project LJMU MA Yr 2 Transit Hub Year: 2022 Duration: 18 weeks

Serving as a link between the below and over ground railway lines is the intermediary Gallowgate Interchange. The station building, located at the intersection of these two lines performs the unifying role, for the would-be polarised railway lines. The Transport Hub is a key node in the extensive regional network, and locally the lines of the city centre are flexed to incorporate this new development. A tower is perhaps where the eye is focused from afar, a device that guides one towards the main entrance and up to the overground railway, as well as offering an element of the picturesque to the square below. The Interchange building is located in what was once the heart of a passenger and goods railway network, and the Glasgow tramlines, which intersected at Mercat Cross, a 1-minute walk from the site. This historic precedent for the site area was extremely influential in selecting this location for the Gallowgate Interchange as well as the vital need to connect the East of Glasgow with the South, while facilitating a rail network that connects to the airport, and the new Mossend logistics centre. The project aims to revivify the area through the guise of a pivotal Transport Interchange, which offers greater connectivity to the Glasgow region and promotes prosperity to an otherwise deprived area.

GALLOWGATE INTERCHANGE Thesis Project LJMU MA Yr 2 Transit Hub Year: 2022 Duration: 18 weeks

Utilising the group masterplan, I defined a specific site for the location for the regional transport interchange. The interchange connects the existing overground and underground railways lines via a new ‘Station Building’. The interchange reflects the demands of the prospective client ‘Network Rail’ by fulfilling their ’10 Principles of Good Design’; Identity, Community Focused, Passengers, Collaborative, Inclusive, Contextual, Innovative, Connected (Transport), Enhancing Heritage & Environmental Impact. The scheme also integrates a cycle route with storage or rental options available below ground level.

The existing underground rail line is connected via three routes, two of which are access routes from the outside, one at each end of the platform, while a direct route from the new station building connects to the underground. The connection is through an existing archway which is over 200 years old and the Molendinar Burn (underground waterway) used to flow beneath it, but now it forms the crucial link between the concourse to the underground. The sub ground level has a large area for cycle storage and rental, allowing cyclists to cycle directly into the building and then have quick access to board a train.

At ground level, an arcade creates a threshold space between the public square and building enclosure, inviting the public into the building domain. A concourse is the dominant open space which offers a variety of facilities and services. The first floor provides a waiting room and cafe, creating a space for rest, or to shop at the adjoining retail building. The second floor has the overground railway line, with a large open-air platform ‘plaza’, which is catered to by a variety of services. Private staff areas and workspaces are divided from the public areas, for safety and security of all the building occupants.

The third floor offers a whisky bar terrace that overlooks both the public square below and the platform plaza. This floor is primarily staff occupied and thus not accessible to the public. PV panels power most of the building’s services. The large central atrium space has been adopted for many reasons, one of which is the stack-effect. MVHR and GSHP are the mechanical strategies that will consistently provide the building with the necessary requirements for achieving human comfort. The roof is greened, absorbing pollution in a city that has poor air quality, while on the rood solar thermal panels provide hot water to the WCs below.

The concourse offers a warm slatted timber ceiling which correlates with the glulam structural frame, while the large atrium above the descending escalators, provide the space with ample natural light. At the overground platform the clock tower ascends above the surrounding context, and the connection between trains and time is continued in this project. The cafe lounge overlooks the public square below, a casual environment that also mirrors as a waiting area. The glulam structure is purposely visible, offering the space strength and proportionality.

The staff car park and on-street blue badge parking are located close to the building entrance for improved accessibility as seen in Part M. The ‘Underground’ wayfinding tower highlights a key entrance point to the underground station below. The night image emphasises the downlighting used in the urban environment, clearly highlighting the building while, minimally disturbing the surrounding context. The fog and snow image reflects the difficult climate in Glasgow during the winter months, and the building, and the choice of resilient cladding materials emphasises the robustness and permeance of this public building.

The choice of structural materials is Glulam beams and columns, fixed to the subground RCC structural frame. CLT cores have been utilised for fire escape stairs that are structurally independent. Sandstone cladding highlights the permeance of the public building, while also being historically contextually relevant. While charred Siberian larch, mimics the sandstone for rigidity and presents a darker contrast. UFH pipes provide the building with heating while floor diffusers and ceiling extractors ensure the spaces are well ventilated, and this is used in tandem with passive strategies for greater environmental performance.

STIMULATE THE SENSES Group Urban Design Project LJMU MA Yr 2 Calton/ The Barras, Glasgow Year: 2021 Duration: 14 weeks

Districts Layout

Western culture has evolved to facilitate the eye as the dominant sense. Contemporary media affirms this, as the world is torn into a succession of snapshot pictures, diminishing the consumer to purely a spectator role, without a sense of spatial locale in what is being perceived. The hegemonic eye pursues supremacy over all spheres of cultural production, and it seems to dilute our capacity for compassion, empathy and participation within society and the world. The role of architecture is not to devolve personal experience to the role of a spectator, rather create a spatial environment where all senses are stimulated, and the individual is immersed and becomes part of the whole.

London Road

The proposed urban scheme is a response to the dogmatic visual stimuli of western culture. The urban scheme proposes to re-invigorate ‘The Barras’, transforming it into a destination that counteracts the mainstream monopolising retail stores, encouraging creatives (both people and organisations) to cultivate an arts and crafts culture which is currently fading. The scheme will facilitate all the senses without discrimination creating an immersive experience. The Barras area of the site is connected through the previous road of Gallowgate which has now been pedestrianised and densified with shops and activities. Plan showing location of Axonometrics

STIMULATE THE SENSES Group Urban Design Project LJMU MA Yr 2 Calton/ The Barras, Glasgow Year: 2021 Duration: 14 weeks

The urban design proposal is underpinned by a regenerative strategy aimed at re-densifying the Calton (The Barras) area. The strategy aims to establish the area as a destination, a place for the bespoke, unusual, and quirky. People are encouraged to arrive via the new ‘Gallowgate Train Station’ or the multiple new cycle routes which criss-cross the site area. Housing developments are distributed around ‘The Barras Market’ core, increasing footfall and density while supplementing the national housing demand. The districts are not single purpose rather it is the most dominant characteristic of the area.

STIMULATE THE SENSES Group Urban Design Project LJMU MA Yr 2 Calton/ The Barras, Glasgow Year: 2021 Duration: 14 weeks

Improving the city layout by defining street edges and roads, create a sense of enclosure and identity, this was greatly lacking as the existing Calton area was ‘leaking’ at corners and the expansive open areas were poorly defined and far too large for a city centre. The west of the city centre followed a grid system however the east-end has always been more organic; therefore, this approach was continued. The collaged visuals offer a sense of the creative atmosphere aiming to be imbibed with key features such as a whisky distillery, arts & sculpture gallery, and a train station (later became the inspiration for the thesis project).

CULTIVATING COMPANIONSHIP Building Design incorperating ‘Food’: LJMU MA Yr 1 Social Housing for the ‘Vulnerable’ Year: 2021 Duration: 11 weeks

The aim of this project is to house specific vulnerable members of society. These vulnerable members are located within Dingle and the neighbouring areas. This area of the Liverpool city region has an extremely low standard of living and the highest crime rate of any ward in the city. The people most vulnerable in this part of the city are the elderly, who fear to leave their home, and single parents, particularly mother and child(ren), whom struggle to make ends meet on benefits and lack of education. This project caters primarily for these people, offering a protected space for the safety of both peoples.

CULTIVATING COMPANIONSHIP Building Design incorperating ‘Food’: LJMU MA Yr 1 Social Housing for the Vulnerable Year: 2021 Duration: 11 weeks

The scheme is split into two sections. The first section of the building is assigned to the elderly, this is visually recognisable due to the U-shape arrangement, this building style is reminiscent of traditional alms-houses such as Caroline Gardens. The second section is occupied by ‘lone parents’ which are clustered closely together and arrange around courtyards offering the residents are greater sense of security. The two sections are united by ‘break-out’ spaces and shared communal areas such as playrooms, and dining areas, while also offering a garden for growing food, and a raised garden for leisure.

A unifying architectural element of the design is the ‘access balcony’, functionally connecting the apartments to the broader complex, while offering a reliable strategy for creating a safe environment, allowing for passive security rather than intrusive video camera security. The protected courtyards bring natural light down to ground level and can be used by the local neighbours for specific events or celebrations. Despite the need to offer residents protection from the difficult environment, it is important not to isolate them, which would rather likely create anxiety, therefore the scheme aims to integrate.

Perspective View

For the whole scheme, one efficient apartment typology has been designed that caters for both groups of people, the elderly, and lone parents (which includes the disabled in both groups). The apartment size is 74m2 and offers two bedrooms, a kitchen/ diner, and toilets facilities with a sizeable balcony space. The apartment has been designed to be as minimally spacious as possible, while being fully available for two disabled people to occupy. The apartment will be pre-manufactured off-site and then assembled onsite. Pre-fabrication and using one typology is a very economically viable solution.

The primary construction material for this building is the use of red brick, chosen as it best reflects some of the surrounding houses, while also being the brick colour of the primary integral social centre ‘The Florrie’. Suspended ceilings allow for services to pass through, and making them readily accessible while creating greater acoustic isolation. A glazed roof located at first floor level allows light to penetrate the ground floor space below, while also generating heat that is retained by the brick walls, and then released during the night.

A crossing point over the cycle route adjacent to the building is an access route into the building complex. A strong axis connects through the building, from each entrance point, this allows for easy navigation while also directed people through the series of protected and secure spaces. Bringing plants and trees into the design is key for the physical connection to nature, benefiting all age groups. The apartments have benches integrated into the design, which is there to promote greater social interaction, or offer a quiet external space for relaxing.

WELLINGTON RETAIL QUARTER Urban Design (Individual) LJMU MA Yr 1 Selected Area of Dingle Year: 2020 Duration: 2 weeks

NW-SE Section

The objective of this project is to create a secondary space to the main square that was designed in the group urban design project. This secondary ‘space’ is a new retail street that is divided by a central cycle lane (also shared by horses). A courtyard space that is angled against the rhythm of the other buildings signifies its key importance, as it offers a space of sanctuary from the busy retail street. Halfway through the street is an area defined by vegetation, both plants and trees, which encourages people to stop and rest and enjoy the local food and beverages on offer.

WELLINGTON RETAIL QUARTER Urban Design (Individual) LJMU MA Yr 1 Selected Area of Dingle Year: 2020 Duration: 2 weeks

The dominant element in the design is the cycle/ horse track flowing directly through the center of the site. Importantly the space is designed to be transitory as the adjoining ‘Main Square’ is the central space for convergence, this space aims to facilitate a vibrant atmosphere and heightening the experience before entering the Main Square. ‘The Florrie’ is juxtaposed with a building in front offering a similar massing, a picturesque notion. This notion aims to give this new development a sense of place and identity due to its relationship with the predominant focal point.

URBAN DESIGN PROJECT Urban Design (Group) LJMU MA Yr 1 Located in the Dingle area Year: 2020 Duration: 6 weeks

The urban design project was focused on the improvement of an existing context in the Dingle area. A strong axis connecting all the way through the site has a historical connection that has been severed, the project aims to bring this strong axis back while centring a new public square at the foot of the integral ‘Florrie’ social building. Due to the site topography sloping rapidly downwards, a SUDs system has been adopted at the base of the hill encouraging biodiversity, this is the pinnacle green space which is directly connected to the other new and well-defined green spaces, through new and existing walkable routes.

The key element that unifies the project is the introduction of a public square and developing different styles of approach to it. The main public square space is available for social events, and to be passed through by cyclists. The main square offers traditional commercial services while a secondary smaller square is designated for farmers markets, and other unique or bespoke services. The existing church now has a protected wall and garden area, heightening the importance of this building in an inexpensive way. Additional green spaces spill off the main square, providing areas for play or for use in social events. Axonometric

The objective of this project was to provide a performing arts university building for Liverpool John Moores University. An essay based on Jungian psychology and the relationship between, theatre, art and architecture. The Jungian archetype has been utilised in the formation of the building concept incorporating ‘The Great Flood’ archetype and the maritime relationship into the building fabric. The building offers five types of key performative spaces: Conventional Theatre, Black box, an open-air atrium space, a framed glazed space and an outdoor upper floor theatre. First Floor Plan

The university is split into two parts, the main theatre building and the educational building. The educational building requires a sequence of double height spaces, on the ground floor the dance rooms and the third floor for the classrooms and lecture theatres. The double height space is a requirement for the dance rooms for practical reasons, however for the classrooms and lecture theatres the addition of the room height is to aid in the natural light with north facing windows on the roof. The rooms are laid in an archetypal hierarchy from the basement to the top floor.

A significant environmental consideration to the design proposal was the busy street adjacent to the site, and the theatre spaces acoustic isolation was a necessary factor to consider. The building form and orientation has been designed to use the educational building as an acoustic buffer to protect the centrally located spaces. The wind direction has been incorporated to use passive cross ventilation for heating and cooling. The heat from spaces in the south of the building is pulled through the building through thermal convection due to the cooler spaces in the north. Site Analysis Plan

Structural Perspective

The facade is composed of recycled copper panels, offering predetermined character, and a resilient metal surface which is likened to the ship theme. Furthermore, the change of colour from orange or brown shades to a green/ blue shade, further reflects the maritime theme and the building changes to become increasingly symbolic of the potential great flood which would affect Liverpool and greatly at the area of the site which is the basin area of Liverpool city centre. Acoustic isolation, soundproofing and acoustic treatment were essential in the development of walls, floors, and ceilings throughout the theatre.

The educational building has been designed such as to align the building form and proportions with the surrounding context. The lack of glazing on the east facade is due the busy road and its acoustic implications on the building. The internal space benefits from the quality lighting captured in the atrium. The strong horizontal emphasis of the site has been achieved to correspond with the projects maritime theme, with the building entrance recessed from the main road. An extruded stair well on the northeast of the building offers additional depth on the facade and a functionalist approach.

Gangways to connect the opposite sides together, both glazed and made from hardwood, for the different aesthetic effects. Yellow columns to offer the space a sense of vibrancy and impact the student’s attitude to an optimistic and clearer outlook towards study. These are psychological qualities the colour induces and yellow has a direct association with the sun which is necessary for the ethos of working with nature rather than against it. RECONNECTING THE ROOT Weather or Not: Learning environment for children & young adults LJMU BA Yr 3 Year: 2019 Duration: 12 weeks

The objective of this project was to create a learning environment for children and young adults via direct connection with nature. The site is located in Hebden Bridge an area succumbed to extensive flooding in recent years. The locals have admirably worked together to adopt sustainable strategies to reduce future flooding. The scheme is a zero-carbon building that highlights the nature in and around the site. The buildings predominant material is water reed thatch, and the broader aim was to introduce thatching materials into the surrounding lands as a building repair strategy or alternate building style. The thatched approach dictated the shape and scale of the building, and offers a similar characteristic to the local trees, placing the style in the natural environment. Two cantilever balconies bring the children directly to the power of the river, which acoustic presence is overwhelming. The style is modelled on post modernism, a style that offered conflicting views to the status quo, and this notion was replicated here, due to the necessary change required in response the local, national, and global attitude to the environment. A thatched roof and wooden frame is a simplified approach, as the project was aimed to allow the locals to be a part of the construction process, a building that brings people closer and offers a different building design which may be adopted in the future. The building design allows for it to be washed away during damaging floods while having no negative environmental implications as the building is fully biodegradable. The building is symbolic of our impermanence on the planet and how architecture tends to lean towards permanence or stability, this building offers a counter position to this philosophy.

PRINTING STUDIO & ARCHIVE Experimental Project: Printing Studio & Pop Art Archive LJMU BA Yr 2 Year: 2019 Duration: 22 weeks

The project objective was to design a pop art archive with an on-site printing studio. The concept is based on functionalism through Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto as the primary inspiration. The sequential flow through the building and strategic placement of windows and routes of movement is key to understanding this design. The utilisation of columns and light to create different frames for the artwork when moving through spaces was an additional component to the design. Naturally lit spaces were crucial when facilitating a reading rooms and workshop and teaching area.

Concrete floors and extruded facade contribute towards the industrious materiality. The ascending stair on the east elevation is an abstract depiction of the flow through the current and upcoming spaces and notably inspired by Aalto’s experimental house. The aim of the project was to re-develop land occupied by a multi-storey car park in the city centre of Liverpool. Historical research indicated the land was previously occupied by a highly renowned botanic garden during the height of the British Empire, however the gardens were relocated to Wavertree due to severe pollution. The project aims to re-introduce the gardens as part of the city context. The gardens offer an opportunity for education and meets the demand for bringing nature back into cities. The development consists predominantly of a garden space, for relaxation and an escape from the busy city life. The addition of a bar, shop, and library for plants also are on the periphery of the site, creating an enclosed private space for the garden. The garden is also partially extruded from the edge further elaborating the essential part nature has to offer in life and the necessity in urban life.

A SHRINE TO LORD LEVER HULME Archifilm: Design of a Sacred Space LJMU BA Yr 1 Year: 2016 Duration: 6 weeks

The first project of my academic studies was to create a sacred space. I chose the project in my home village of Port Sunlight, and designed a shrine to Lord Lever Hulme, the man who designed the village based on the garden city movement, and the founder of Unilever. The shrine is located at a place where he gave speeches to his villages, and the materiality of stone implicates his permanent impact on the culture of the village. The water offers both the purity of a sacred place and is geologically appropriate as the village was a marshland for many years and this area was prone to flooding. Floor Plan
