Me, Myself & da’ Arch To me architecture is just not the study of manoeuvring spaces but also the people associated to them. I consider it as the art of environmental response; sustainable architecture being the demand of the time. The relationship between buildings and environment has been a vital force throughout the history. I want to continue, deepening my understanding and professional experience to respond to these modern challenges. “Architecture, till now, has given me the freedom to perceive environment as a royalty, to observe reality as future and to imagine beyond the horizons but with limitations that prepares me to have conclusions for my imaginations.

Metamorphic Manufacture is an experiment set on the banks of the River Mersey, in which the ‘Giants’ that have become so synonymous with Liverpool are to be manufactured. It is the harnessing of the Giants movement and energy to provoke a scheme which is both a performance in itself as well as a local landmark. The facility is set out from the Liverpool shoreline and demonstrates the movement of the Giants’ through its external appearance. The unique factor however is that everything that can move, does so by storing the energy of the Mersey’s movement, both vertically and horizontally, and allowing the occupants to deliver the power to the relevant element. A ‘moving’ factory that manufactures the Giants. Giants who’s movement have left a lasting memory on the people of Liverpool. A memory that will last a lifetime.

the cliff or virtuosity. We need a culture that celebrates design and invention. This is something I truly believe in and something I can relate to as an young professional in this architectural world. The proposed architecture reacts to the existing features of the landscape and it reveals new dimensions in the topography of each place - top - middle bottom. This project explores a great spatial complexity and it is manifested above all in the emulating the natural world we live in.

Located in the heart of Porto, my project ‘Celebrating a Golden River: Douro Museum & Research Centre’ - aims to focus emphasis on the importance of the Douro river as the 3rd longest river in the Iberian Peninsula. It celebrates the river’s ecological, geological and sociological rashness, while at the same time giving researchers an ideal place to study the river and exhibit their findings in order to preserve the river for future generations. It suggests a moving object that flows elegantly towards the ocean, creating an architectural promenade that links Porto to Douro.

My professional experiences include working as an architectural assistant, producing ranges of visual media, and ongoing collaborations with several practices as a freelance designer. I’ve developed as a young professional by combining architectural studies with parttime jobs and independent ventures. The Array is my final year project developed for the south-facing escarpment of Porto’s river Douro, a steep, continuous screen of exposed granite rising an average of 30m above the water level. The line-up of towers house start-up enterprises and work together to form a cluster which caters the needs of industries dedicated to the generation of knowledge and information.

The Motion Picture Museum of Porto, located at the heart of the city’s historic centre, forms an extension to Porto’s cultural tourist industry. Acting as a draw to tourists whilst benefiting the local population by providing an interactive addition to the city, it offers not only an insight into Porto’s ties with the motion picture industry but also provides unique experiences unobtainable elsewhere in the city. The ‘Camera Obscura’ provides views of the surrounding environ from a new perspective whilst the open air cinema offers the opportunity to experience the joys of Portuguese cinema while serving to add to the existing urban dynamic of the area.

In effect, my project was an examination of the sweet spot where past meets future, where function meets excess, where need meets want, and more importantly, an exploration into how each should counterbalance the other. This is the essence of true architectural debate, and the fulcrum by which progress is triggered.

A Retreat for the Written Word ‘When I dance, I dance, when I sleep, I sleep; yes, and when I walk alone in a beautiful orchard, if my thoughts have been dwelling elsewhere, I bring them back to the work, to the orchard, to the sweetness of this solitude, and to me’ Michel de Montaigne, Of Experience The scheme, a retreat for reading and writing, forms one of a series of genius loci points within a masterplan for a picturesque landscape park on the banks of the River Douro in Porto. The intention was to enhance human experience in response to the landscape, through the site down to the detail of the building.

A city dairy farm specialising in the production of artisan cheese, made entirely from goats milk produced on site. Occupying a new proposed green infrastructure, the farm becomes a key component in strengthening the link between ‘urban city’ and ‘nature’. Although a working farm, the scheme is also a public space for the community and aims to educate visitors by allowing them to interact with the buildings and their processes. Dairy products produced on site would be sold from the farm shop and cafe, as well as distributed to local markets and surrounding businesses. The interaction between the farm and different sectors of the local community reinforce the project’s fundamental concept; ‘City Neighbourhood as a Net Producer’

The Rowing Centre supports the growth in recreational use of the Praia do Oliveira. It’s primary function will be to provide facilities to allow the wider use of the river. These facilities are at the heart of the scheme and are supported by a well conceived mix of accommodation that creates a socially and economically sustainable building. The building will respond to the needs and uses of the site by incorporating a club/ restaurant building to serve the social function of the rowing club and the local community, and a beach bar cafe which will accommodate tourism and serve the annual music festival held on the beach.

The main idea of the project was to connect the Baltic creative area with the waterfront area, by creating a new iconic building for the entire area, a focus point for the local people, businesses and also for the pedestrians. The project is the new heart of the area and a new reason for a tourist or a business man to visit the Baltic Triangle. The new smart innovation Centre aim is the economic growth of the area by creating new jobs and changes. The concept of the building and the philosophy is based on Le Corbusier’s points. Flexible open spaces achieved by the pilotis which are separated from the walls, subduing the space. The free design of the façade is achieved by separating the exterior of the building from its structural form. The multiple staircases and lifts allow people to move horizontally and vertically in a more free way.

The Reef: Oyster Culture in the Douro Set in the city of Porto ‘The Reef’ aims to introduce oyster farming as a sustainable food source and ecological restoration project in the Douro River. The Oyster Breeding and Research Centre will facilitate the production of oysters whilst researching new and more efficient methods of breeding and production. The building will help to reconnect the public to the waters edge providing a vibrant low level promenade with restaurants benefitting from the fresh produce grown on site. This deck not only encourages an engagement with the process of oyster production but with the river itself.

The aim of this project is to create a unique place of performance in the city. The building will become a backdrop of drama throughout the day with its semi-translucent skin enabling passers by to see the collaboration going on inside or by acting as a backdrop to performances which take place outside. During the night the same skin is lit and acts as beacon of light attracting people towards it in an otherwise brick industrial area of Liverpool, whilst the focus of the people moves inside to the auditoriums.

CDP Theatre Building - the linchpin development in Liverpool’s City wide Masterplan, connecting the Creative District with Liverpool City. The Theatre building epitomises the areas creative talent, strong sense of social power and capitalises on a diverse, youthful and wealthy audience. This development will ensure the longevity of Liverpool’s creative industry and provide the area with a strong, united identity that becomes key to the development of the city. The building becomes venue to the areas success and becomes the headquarters to theatrical innovation, Liverpool’s nightlife attraction and the new area of Stanhope Street.

‘Cliffscraper’ - The University of Porto The University of Porto is expanding and creating a new identity for itself in preparation for the impending involvement of the Future Cities project within Massarelos. Through the design of the building I have questioned the structure of the University of Porto in terms of governing hierarchy, it is a inadvertent critique and deconstruction of the system. The monumental form is a catalyst for the development of the new university campus and will become the origin from which the university operates and attract recognition on a global scale.

Fontainhas Living My project incorporates the social housing and the distribution into one design scheme, each with their own distinctive elements. The housing provides a better standard of living for the residents that, for one reason or another, they have been unable to achieve. In order to attain this, and be affordable for families with low incomes, the housing program would aim to be adequately subsidised by the government. The process and distribution centre will become a local wholesale market with in-built processing facilities. As the farmers will stock the market, they will also operate the space, in an effort to keep the income within the area for future development and growth.

Higher education has become an industry, whether it likes it or not. With ever increasing fees, students are under increasing pressure to ensure they chose the right institution. University advertising or branding has made this process easier, selling themselves to prospective students. Higher education has become a process driven business, leaving the needs of the student behind. With the ever increasing number of students applying to universities, institutions will need space to cater for this influx.
UNIVERSITY OF PORTO, CENTRAL LECTURE BLOCK 7009 MARCH CDP PROJECT// EMMA-JANE DAWSON
I have based my initial ideas on how universities have become a mechanism for creating money where the students are no longer the priority. I have addressed this through the programme and the concept to design a building that services the students quickly though a programme hierarchy within the design.

The CDP building, is a redesign of an existing building: the former HMRC offices on the Queens Dock in Liverpool. As well as a redesign, the function will be changed also. Coinciding with the return of the large scale puppets to Liverpool this year, it was envisaged that the building, could provide the facility for the manufacture and display of these performance pieces. With a large span roof covering the previously open central space, it will allow the assembly of large puppets in the core interior space of the building.

Through strategic urban and architectural intervention the Massarelos district of Porto could be transformed from a peripheral part of the city with a portion of university programme into a vibrant knowledge quarter which serves the wider region. This proposal for a Learning Commons sits within the context of a group university masterplan which aims to simultaneously stitch together pieces of fragmented urban fabric and strengthen the University of Porto’s position as Portugal’s number one institute for higher education.

THE AUTONOMOUS BALTIC Traditionally it’s known in cities to venture daily from home to work, to then make the same laborious trip back through vast transport networks built to cope with high volumes of commuters. City towers shouldn’t have a singular function and should offer diverse autonomous living. The ranges of amenities available in a high rise need to be re-envisaged, there needs to be essential facilities for residents all within walking distance. The question now is whether the current approaches to high-rise design are adequate enough to provide an acceptable quality of living in the sky?
